Yeah, absolutely, there can be a deep meaningful understanding between two people without romance. But a deep, meaningful understand should be part of a romance. A central part. Aang never demonstrates that he understands Katara at all. TSR is the most egregious example of Aang's misunderstanding of Katara- it even ends on his continued misunderstanding of her- but it's not the only example. Remember when he told Pakku Katara didn't mean what she was saying when she called him out? Remember when he supported the soft colonization of the NWT on her home? Remember how he called helping her with necessary chores boring, and went off to go flirt with his fans? Remember how he ignored Katara's feelings when they were actually dating and continued flirting with his fangirls even though they were being blatantly disrespectful of Katara? Yeah, solid romance there. A+. I'm sure Zuko, with his respect for Katara's feelings, skill, and input would have been a much worse romantic partner.

Aang never connects with Katara about being the last of their respective lines. In fact, it's pretty clear that after they marry, his heritage takes precedence. To the point that his two non-airbending kids carry the scars of his neglect well into adulthood, and his oldest son talks about never feeling like he belonged to his father until he got airbending. Tenzin is half SWT, but you'd never know to meet him. He embraces nothing of his mother's culture, and its implied he doesn't even see her that often. But, yeah, I'm so sure Aang made multi-culturalism a priority in his home.

Also, so much for Katara and Zuko's deep, meaningful platonic connection. Bryke hated how popular a ship they were so much, that they never even interact in LoK. Katara in season 1 said that all her friends were dead, but by the end of the series, both Toph and Zuko were back.

As far as Zutara ignoring parts of Katara, that's completely untrue. What most people love about Zutara is that unlike Kataang, it allows Katara to be her fullest, most imperfect self. Zuko saw her at her lowest and validated her feelings. Aang only offered judgement and weak platitudes. Oh, and one thing Zuko never ignored with Katara was her consent, so there's that...🤷🏾‍♀️

It is absolutely insane to me that Bryke, who apparently wanted Ktaang to be endgame from jump, gave the emotional linchpin moment to their NoTP. At the point that the finale aired, they knew that a ton of fans shipped Zutara, Nick knew the fans wanted Zutara, key players in both the writers room and the art team shipped Zutara. They knew they were pouring gas on the fire, there was no way they didn't know. My question is, if they wanted everyone onboard with Kataang, why would they go so hard on establishing Katara and Zuko's connection.

I know there's the whole will they/won't they nonsense that gets trotted out as the reason, but at no point did anyone who wanted Kataang to happen compare the development of their "friendship" to Katara and Zuko's development and say, "Hey...pretty much every scene Katara and Zuko have together is pivotal to their development both separately and as friends, and that seems to be getting them a lot of support as a romantic pair. Maybe we should throw one or two of those into Katara and Aang's dynamic?" Because there is no moment of mutual understanding between Katara and Aang. Katara is Aang's emotional support, yes, but you never get the sense that he gets her. And Aang doesn't even get to the point of being Katara's emotional support. Moments that should have been pivotal moments just proved how little Aang understood Katara as a person. That entire ship is built on the fact that Aang thinks Katara is pretty and Katara takes care of Aang. This is how I know that whatever women actually made it to the ATLA writers room weren't given a voice, because I can't imagine any grown woman with any relationship experience would look at the Kataang dynamic and think that's a dream ship.

Ka/taang: friends-to-lovers or the Friend Zone?

It’s almost axiomatic, in any ATLA shipping discussion, that Ka/taang is the friends-to-lovers ship while Zutara is the enemies-to-lovers ship, and that differences in shipping tastes can be boiled down to whether you prefer FTL or ETL.

My first ship was Percabeth. My biggest ship was Klaine. It took me until Mockingjay to let go of my Gale-and-Katniss-are-childhood-friends rose-tinted goggles and start liking Everlark. I started dabbling in ETL because of Zutara, but I’m incredibly picky about it (do not ask me how many Dramione fanfics made me irrationally, disproportionately mad).

All this to say: as a longtime friends-to-lovers enthusiast, I should theoretically love Ka/taang. But…

My difficulty with Ka/taang as a friends-to-lovers ship boils down to this: Aang and Katara’s friendship was always narratively framed as insufficient, because Aang liked her from the start and always wanted a romantic relationship. And imo that dynamic really colours their entire friendship.

I like to think Aang would’ve been a ride-or-die friend — the type to give up the Avatar State to rescue her, the type to commit ecoterrorism and help her get arrested, the type to make her a flower necklace to cheer her up — even if he didn’t have a crush on her, but I will never know that. We never got to see the pure friendship part of friends-to-lovers, because the spectre of the romantic relationship was always there. Before the last five minutes of the show, Katara’s feelings for Aang range from “plausibly interested” (The Headband, Cave of Two Lovers) to “doesn’t hate it” (Day of the Black Sun, The Fortuneteller) to “no” (Ember Island Players). Yet Katara’s eventual capitulation to reciprocation of Aang’s feelings was always depicted as inevitable, starting from s1 when the prisoners during Avatar Day reassured him that she’d “come around” because he’s a catch. It’s as if friendship, even one full of devotion and mutual love like the one they share, is not enough.

And that’s just totally antithetical to what I love about a friends-to-lovers dynamic. I love romances where characters value each other outside of attraction, when they see each other for who they are (this goes double for pretty characters like Katara, whose complexity and imperfections are just as important as her beauty and her care for others). I love the idiots in love sub-trope, where they’re obviously into each other, yet do a bunch of mental gymnastics to remain in comfortable denial (we got a little bit of this earlier in the series, but by s3 we were firmly in Aang-pines-and-Katara-deflects territory). In every friends-to-lovers story I’m simply obsessed with the confess-and-kiss scene, but the version we got in ATLA was ruined by the lack of reciprocation, twice.

Over time, because Aang was written as so insistent about his affections, Ka/taang went from a friends-to-lovers story to a Nice Guy Friend Zone “why doesn’t she like me” story. I mentioned Everlark earlier: I got the same ick for Gale in Mockingjay as I did for Aang in s3, where the woman is not interested yet he still badgers her about it. (And considering Gale is canonically hot, I don’t think the relative attractiveness of Aang is the issue here). But Gale’s insistence was presented as his problem, his lack of empathy, his self-righteousness; Aang’s insistence was just a part of his quest to get the girl.

A lot of people say Zutara is a female fantasy, whether they mean it in a positive or pejorative way. Nobody says the same about Ka/taang, even though women definitely have friends-to-lovers fantasies too. A good friends-to-lovers story reminds me of all the times when I was an idiot before getting together with a friend I was actually head-over-heels for. Ka/taang reminds me of all the times when I was not interested in a friend and they didn’t respect my preference. Friends-to-lovers is a delicate balance, maintained only by unerring mutual respect and unconditional care for each other, and it can veer into Nice Guyism if the writers aren’t thoughtful about why this dynamic is so appealing. Which is exactly what happened with Ka/taang.

something that i’ve noticed when it comes to love triangles - whether canon or born entirely out of fanon - is that the fandom will always berate the girl in love triangles involving her and two other guys for making the “wrong choice” (i.e. not selecting the fandom favourite or the one that fandom has dubbed most suitable for her). however, in love triangles involving a guy and two girls, the guy is almost always exemplified and excused for their “wrong choice.” instead, the misogyny is directed towards one of the girls in the love triangle - particularly the canon love interest that interferes with the fandom’s favourite ship.

take the atla fandom as an example. katara is primarily blamed for choosing the “12 year old prebuscent boy” instead of the “hot angsty prince with a cool scar,” despite the fact that zuko had kissed mai several months before katara had kissed aang (his coronation and the finale of atla take place within the span of a couple of months). on the flip side, zuko is never indicted by fandom for choosing the “wrong girl.” rather, fandom will go through great lengths to blame mai for every problem that zuko has had, accusing her of holding him back from reaching his true potential as the firelord.

fandoms are incredibly misogynistic, even the ones claiming to be feminist spaces who prioritize female characters. both katara and mai experience the wrath of fandom misogyny as a result of a decade old ship war primarily constructed by fandom, all for the simple crime of not choosing the “correct” option or getting in the way of the “correct” option. free them, and every fictional female who has been scorned by fandom for not living up to their preferences.

yandere zuko getting the reader to fall for him! tw/cw: yandere behavior, protectiveness, insecurity a/n: he's honestly a cutie patootie i cant lie

he's awkward... but determined!

his 'yandere-ness' is very toned down while he is pining over you and won't actually show until he is in a relationship with you.. at least not to your face!

now when it comes to making you fall for him, he is at a loss

not that you don't like him but he always seems to mess up when he's around you

like accidentally making your tea too hot and burning you because he was just so nervous speaking with you

or when you finally have a conversation with him and gives the same enthusiasm as "that's rough buddy"

he does care! just, doesn't know how to show it

so he seeks guidance from others..

sokka's advice tells him to flirt with you and show off his strength

he does try but he ends up accidently lighting something or someone on fire

uncle iroh tells him to make a romantic gesture, plan a date and drink tea

this plan actually works in the first bit until he realizes he is not very good at conversation and from the mishaps whenever he serves you tea- he decide this is a no-go

toph says to buy you things or whatever girls like but you never accept his gifts!

aang says to just be nice to you but he has a fucking panic attack every time you smile at him

his last resort is katara who begrudgingly tells him to be himself and just tell you how he feels

and he does

you accept his confession much to his(and everyones surprise)

but he doesn't believe that you actually like him? i mean, everyone in his life besides his uncle hates him or used to. what if this is just a ploy and you're secretly making fun of him behind his back?

because of his insecurities, he slowly distances himself away from you. he finally got what he wanted but it doesn't feel real, just yet.

that is, until one day, azula comes back and is looking to hurt.

fights happen but azula gets the better of zuko.

she's right about to give him another burn to the face until you step in.

whether you're a bender or not, you risk your life to save zuko.

zuko is amazed and almost in awe

someone really cared enough to save his life and out of all people, it's you!

he doesn't know why he never saw it before but you really do love him!

and he's going to make sure that you never forget that he loves you back.

after defeating azula, you both escape very injured but zuko isn't worried about his wounds, only you.

you tell him that you're fine and that it was worth it to save zuko

but seeing you hurt... it triggers something in zuko, a rage that makes even his skin hot to the touch.

he promises that you'll never get hurt in his care, ever again.
