Plant of the Day
Wednesday 7 June 2023
A large variegated Hosta cultivar (plantain lily) was thriving in a small garden. This plant has made a great feature and so far the splendid foliage has not been not been discovered by snails or slugs.

The dreaded, beloved shade garden. I've just been throwing things in it the last couple of years, and it's survival of the fittest.
5 hostas (some are camouflaged in the grass like lion cubs on the savannah 🤣 they're shy and sense a threat, sorry) and a naked lady are the returners. New to the roster is the hydrangea (Third. Fecking. Attempt. with these things), the begonias, and the moonflower. May the odds be ever in their favor.

My hosta is going to flower finally! Thankfully someone brought this beauty to the swap and I was able to successfully transplant it despite it being so hot out.

Hosta ‘June’ single- handedly converted me to hostas. My mother disdained them and called them funkias (which I guess is a real name for them) so I never paid attention but then I saw this beauty at a plant nursery and I haven’t looked back since. <<heart eyes>>

Joy
October 17, 2023
Last June I took my husband to the emergency room. He had a detached retina that needed immediate surgery (Immediate is somewhat misleading. We spent the day waiting for a time slot on the following day).
At the end of a long day I realized that I had only one earring. This is always a sad thing, since I wear my favorite earrings. Why would you wear them, if you didn't like them?
The unlost earring sat on the dining room table for months just in case it's mate turned up. I finally cleared it away so we could eat on the table.
Yesterday I was using the weed-wacker to clear off the hostas and other vegetation that gets in the way of snow shoveling and I saw a small blue rectangle (1/16" x 1/14") in the dirt. It was the missing earring!
But where was the other one? I looked in my box of single earrings. Not there and my heart sank. I looked in the dish where I put my rings at night and voila!
So exactly 18 weeks later I have a pair of earrings again.

Garden Bed #1
6/1/2023 - 10:00AM
It’s June!!! I will be planning out my garden beds, the first one is located on the far left corner of our backyard, with 5-6 hours of sun and possibly more with the sunset I believe this spot is good for mainly shady crops. The bed will be 17′’ tall and it’s pretty wide I want to maximize the space, the width will be very small but as far as length I want it to take up as much of our length as possible. A lot of our garden beds will be in the backyard area and I want it to get shorter and bulkier on the sun spots. Anyways.
Shady crops that I might plant there:
Lettuce
Spinach
Peas
Potatoes
Carrots
Cauliflower
Kale
Garlic
Celery
These are viable options and i will be making the bed long enough to hold majority of these I want to diversify the beds. In order of importance and usage I think it would be Lettuce, Celery, and Peas. These greens my family eats the most and I was thinking of lining the peas somewhere on the left side of the bed mirror onto the other side, I want the peas to cover as much of the corner as possible. Next the lettuce and celery are lower growing crops and I was thinking of planting them somewhere in the middle, then on the very right I want a shade perennial like hostas or fern. I’m leaning towards hostas just because ferns can get out of control quick.

My hostas are blooming!
I stink at making bouquets, but as long as the flowers aren't wilted most folks are happy to get a bouquet, ugly or not 🤣
Its for Mom. That was the purpose of trying to include more blooms in the garden this year (seriously mixed success, I'm lucky I have anything to make a bouquet with at this point lol).
I sewed plants indoor this year and so, SO many mistakes were made. The successes lie in the learning lol. It produced a couple mysteries since I labeled poorly.
What I thought might be African daisies are tomatoes that absolutely cannot go where I planted them 🤣
Then there's this dude. Zero idea what he'll be.
And there's the MYSTERY GOURD. Seems to be coming for my sweet pepper. Might have to cull.
That pepper is so big on such a tiny plant. Is it ready to harvest? 🧐
