The reason for this connection is because I am currently pursuing a degree in secular studies, and one of my courses this semester is 'Religion and Popular Culture.'

Our current unit is focusing on the religious iconography present in the horror genre; to get us started we were assigned a very interesting article written by Bryan Stone at the Boston University School of Theology. It's called "The Sanctification of Fear: Images of the Religious in Horror Films." Here is a link to the full article online.

On page 8, under the sub-heading "Supernatural Horror", there is a whole page dedicated to exploring the evolution and presence of vampires in the horror genre. Specifically in relation to religion.

Stone quotes Linda Badley here, describing 1980s horror as "a spectacle, offering not mere transcendence of the body but transcendence through the body.” Stone later goes on to say that vampires "not only sucks from us our blood (and thereby our very “life force”), but willfully embraces evil, inverts normative patterns of valuation, and violates established institutions of family, religion, science, and law" (Stone, 9).

Stone then goes on to provide specific examples for how vampires counteract the societal norms we've come to expect in modern society. Reading through these examples, I formed a strong connection to Hannibal Lecter - specifically his portrayal in the NBC show.

If you have the time to skim this portion of the article, I highly suggest it! Especially if you are fan of Hannibal and vampirism. You might see the same connections I do.
