I suppose the question is, what “things” specifically does OP mean when they say “then these things won’t happen anymore”? When I first read it I assumed OP wasn’t talking about the specific concept of Girl Dinner or even TikTok’s existence/popularity/influence—I thought OP meant that if Tumblr users who dislike TikTok trends stopped going to TikTok, seeing the trends, and reporting back to Tumblr about all the new annoying TikTok trends, then people who use Tumblr to avoid annoying TikTok trends could more successfully avoid seeing annoying TikTok trends. Which I get! This is supposed to be the website that offers a reprieve from the soundbyte-based algorithm, I can understand OP’s frustration when TikTok discourse bleeds over onto the site-for-people-who-want-to-get-away-from-TikTok.

You’re right, TikTok is huge, it’s far more influential than Tumblr is, it’s an unavoidable part of the social media landscape, it’s not going away any time soon and it’ll keep spawning memes like Girl Dinner cuz that’s what catches the user base’s fancy—nothing we can (or honestly, should) do about that. At the same time, Tumblr users complaining about TikTok trends on Tumblr can feel a little like:

“Look what I found in the horrible room! Isn’t it awful?” “Yeah, that’s why I tend not to go into the horrible room.” “I’m going to go get MORE shit from the horrible room so we can look at it and talk about how much it sucks!” “What if, instead, we just stayed here in the place that’s not the horrible room, and didn’t go get any more stuff from the room that we don’t like? That’s an option.”

I mean, there’s another component to it if you believe that discussing problematic TikTok trends is a moral imperative, lest we allow the youths to slip into degeneracy. But even then, selection bias more or less ensures that the version of “girl dinner” that makes the jump from TikTok to Tumblr is the worst version in circulation, not necessarily a representative sample of how the population at large uses the term. For all the screeds I’ve seen on here about Girl Dinner promoting eating disorders/performative daintiness/uncritical embrace of traditional gender roles, whenever it comes across my wife’s FYP (I don’t care for TikTok but she likes it), it’s been more along the lines of: I don’t have the time/energy/money to make a big fancy meal right now but I still gotta eat, whatever, I’m having fun with it. Wrap some cold cuts around some baby carrots, call that GirlDinner. It’s just not that big a deal.

There will always be Girl Dinner and things like it, but we don’t have to chow down (or serve it to guests) if it looks unappetizing, you know? I don’t interpret the original post as a call to abolish TikTok or even a plan to prevent the rise of trends like Girl Dinner, but instead, a plea to leave TikTok discourse to the TikTokkers and refocus on Tumblr’s core values: fake Scorsese movies and fucking that old man.

the only reason i know about girl math and girl dinner is because of people on here complaining about those terms. and those people who first started complaining saw it on tiktok. so heres the thing. why dont we all just never look at tiktok again forever. then these things won't happen anymore.

And Ambessa had nothing to say to Mel about her powers having visibly awakened? Even when Mel offered to go with Ambessa, giving her the ultimate opportunity to make Mel a weapon for real? And Ambessa made no attempt to find or retrieve Mel - not just her daughter and the remnants of the family Ambessa professes to love, but also her ultimate weapon - when she disappeared? And Ambessa trusted Singed and Viktor on their home turf - neither of them hiding how insane and self-serving they are with every reason to take over Ambessa's soldiers or just blatantly turn on her as soon as it benefits them - more than she trusted Mel? While Caitlyn (and by extension Piltover) was visibly and clearly falling away from Ambessa's teachings before Ambessa's eyes? (as if getting rid of certain people allows piltover to get rid of fascism but we won't get into All That)

Not only do I struggle to be hyped for Mel's powers beyond how amazing and beautiful she looks, but I can't help but feel like Mel is somehow less powerful in season 2 than she was in season 1, and not in an interesting way. As if Mel's ability to bend all of Piltover politics and economics to her will in season 1 now means nothing in season 2? You can argue that Jinx's attack led directly to Mel losing ground in Piltover - because I expected Mel to have to claw back that power without being able to rely on people who are too easily seduced by Ambessa and authoritarianism, and she would have to get creative to go toe to toe with her mother. I expected pushback to her mage identity that she would have to navigate. But instead this went either unwritten, or was ignored or discarded. Instead Mel is removed from the main plot, cutting her off from what made her the most interesting - only for all of Mel's very real talents, her very real powers and abilities, to be not only translated but REPLACED with magical powers she doesn't know how to control, and by the finale, those magic powers are the only powers that are considered real. Mel takes a backseat to Piltover's governing and decisions, a backseat to Jayce of all people who was not only new to politics mere months ago but made poor governing, strategic, and diplomatic decisions when he had that power. In season 1 Mel stayed off the "throne" but she did pull its strings one way or the other, and she makes no attempt at this in season 2

In my least generous suspicions, Mel was gentled and quieted to capitulate to an agenda for other characters who had to be correct and heroic - or wrong and villainous - no matter what the leadup narrative said, given her powers to help sell the game and set up future shows, and was effectively ejected from the Arcane story with faceless soldiers and a role she doesn't want because she was inconvenient there

#i feel you op i also started initially to read the stories but got busy grinding for events instead 😭 #i also haven't read any of the events not even madguy bc i feel like im gonna miss a lot of context i feel sorry for my boys #although I've recently caught up to ch7 and it made me a stornger more brainrotted madguy fan than before #ppl said it's gonna get more insane later on and im nervous #but so far. the stories are GOOD i highly recommend reading it if you're able to #it's just kamen rider but with extra steps #also to assuage your fear (i hope?) i heard from the grapevines that the change to leon is minimal you can easily miss it (via @chipsncookies)

YES I feel a lot better knowing other people are in the same boat as me! :') as someone who only plays games very casually, the events are fun (and have been a good excuse to get those support stories on characters I was kinda ignoring) but SO distracting -- and they have a connected overarching narrative of their own (make sure you read them in order when you get to them!) so I don't want to skip any. which I guess is to say that my problem is that I'm enjoying the writing too much! how dare they.

overall it definitely has that Kamen Rider tone and feeling I was hoping for and I am VERY pleased with it! I do kinda miss the kitbashy monsters, though otherwise it's basically just Rider But With More Random Scenes of Characters Being Ridiculous At Each Other and that is exactly what I was after. (also exquisite taste, Mad Guys are best guys 🤝)

and as long as I still haven't gotten to episode 13 and can therefore continue to be hilariously naive, let me just say that I know what I'm dreaming of for Leon. he deserves it.

...although I do think it would be VERY funny if they made that whole big "WE WILL BE UPDATING LEON'S SPRITES TO REFLECT STORY CHANGES!!!!" announcement and then it turns out that they just like. hue-shifted his eye color slightly to the right or something. it's not even a big story beat, Leon just decided to try out some color contacts, maybe comb his hair back a little, and we don't have the heart to tell him to stop. :(
