hey! this is actually something i've thought about quite a lot before so here's how i see it:

since monsters are so diverse in the monster world, there are a vast amount of factors that are considered beautiful. some monsters may like 1 eye, some like 3 eyes and some like 8. some like feathers, scales, or fur. it just comes down to preference. but for monsters, generally, scary = beautiful

firstly, for the teeth thing, i imagined that just like human beauty standards, monster beauty standards can change. perhaps yellow teeth used to be the standard, but then it was discovered that whiter teeth made them more visible and gave them a scarier appearance. also, maybe they discovered that poor dental health caused monsters to lose their teeth sooner, which is a problem if you rely on them for scaring. proper dental care allowed you to stay healthy and kept your teeth in good condition, keeping you in the scaring career for longer. like when sulley is brushing his teeth in mi, mike really emphasizes getting rid of plaque

this change could also be why randall's teeth in mi are visibly whiter than they were in mu

as for female monsters, i see it sorta like how jessica rabbit from who framed roger rabbit is in toon town. she's regarded as very beautiful, but not as desireable or successful (to other toons) as roger rabbit, someone more cartoony and goofy looking

so though the more humanoid looking monsters could be considered beautiful, since being a scarer is known as the biggest achievement a monster could have, if you're scary, you're considered beautiful on a whole other level.

another idea i had is that scaring could be considered as a male dominated career, so the scary/beauty standards for female monsters aren't as scrutinized as much as male monsters. this could be why there are more female monsters that aren't necessarily as "scary looking"

this could also play a role into why the pnk's are so cutthroat- with a more conventionally beautiful appearance, they might not be considered the most successful in monster society. sure they could be models and movie stars

(though i can still see """scary/conventionally unattractive""" monsters being just as viable as models and moviestars in the monster world, maybe even more so),

but since scarers are the creme de la creme, "prettier" monsters could sometimes be seen as beautiful but maybe not typically the image of someone "successful" or "desireable" (my oc lia is a scarer and has a body type similar to the pnks so i made this an insecurity of hers hehe)

but monsters can combat this by showing their scariness through their glowing eyes, teeth, claws, etc. this could be valuable as well as there's a scary/surprising factor to appearing "innocent" at first, which could be advantageous in scaring, if you know how to use it (like the pnk's in the toxicity challenge or terri and terry in the scare simulator)

also considering the movie poster seen in maw; it's about monsters in space, likely referring to aliens. humans could be considered aliens/alien-looking to monsters because they come from another world, and heather has a more humanoid appearance

on the other hand, hss is more favored as "one of the most powerful, scary monsters in campus, and they have a more traditionally "scary" appearance. and in monsters at work, of the female monsters in the mu sororities, rosie levin was the one who made it to the same scare/(laugh) floor that sulley/(mike) are/(were) on, at monsters inc.

so really i think beauty is subjective in the monster world since everyone is so different. conventionally beautiful monsters are still beautiful, maybe even some monster's preference, but scary monsters are generally favored most, because of how much monster society is centered around scaring. after all, "scariness is the true measure of a monster."

Ryanne - I think she's the second best driver of this group, though she definitely prefers to be a passenger! Cow accessories everywhere! She got a bulk thing of them on amazon 😝 also, I don't think she likes people eating in her car. Also her and Olympia are talking about Duran Duran

Rhys - Rhys seems like a VERY nervous driver to me. Her back is ramrod straight and she is NOT looking away from the road. Cause she doesn't like to drive, their car is pretty clean! They have snacks and water bottles in the trunk just in case. I like to think those stickers are from Beckett.

Olympia - Plushies. Everywhere. Olympia strikes me as a sunglasses, tinted windows kinda driver. I also think she's the best driver of this group. Her sound system is the stuff of legends. I added the purple neon 1) cause it's sick as hell and 2) i like to think Jordan got them for her :). Also, Louie totally saw a cute dog on the sidewalk

Louie - It is a miracle they are getting to their destination in one piece. Poor Rhys is miming the brake pedal the entire time. Ocean stickers all over!! Also, fun fact, my best friend has christmas lights in her car! It's legal in michigan as long as their in the back seat! I also hit Louie with my anime fan beam so he got a goku plushie

Update!

There is no correlation between number photobooth quests and instances of dating dialogue. Wes has 2 quests and 30 instances. Sakura has 2 quests and 0 instances. Truely all over the place.

Here’s data of most of the different dialogue changes in high school story based on dating. Mia’s is a little odd; read the methodology lol

In the gay graph I’m using the word gay loosely, not making definitive claims about characters sexualities. I also exclude the MC from that data. I was just curious about the proportions of ships pixelberry predicted us players would have.

In most cases there’s way more dialogue for the MC dating someone than other possible couples. 17 quests where it matters if you’re dating Payton! I was actually surprised to see how little is actually done with the Autumn love triangle.

Methodology:

I only include a couple once per quest, even if they have multiple moments together in the same quest. I only include a quest once, even if there’s multiple files for it (like many seasonal ones). I don’t include dialogue for dating a random classmate (for example the heartthrob helpquest changes slightly if you are dating the heart throb).

I didn’t include code that just asked if a character was dating someone in general , with one exception: in prim_0052_wicked.lua there’s a command that changes dialogue if both Sakura and Nishan are dating someone. Based on the dialogue I made a judgement call and treated this as an example of Sakura and Nishan together.

I do include any time dialogue is triggered by 2 named characters dating, for example if Koh is dating Kallie.

In The Final Talley, there’s a requirement to send someone you’re MC is dating on a quest, and there is unique dialogue if certain main characters were sent. I include these too. I looked for other examples of this using the fandom wiki as a guide, but found none.

You may notice Max and Nick are on this list too despite not going to your school. That’s because the game remembers if you’ve played photobooth quests and changes some dialogue based on that. I had to include them because of Mia. Of the 11 times I counted dialogue changes based on Mia and the MC dating, 7 were based on if they are currently dating and 4 are based on weather you’ve completed her date quest.

I've gone back into an huge high school story hyperfix for No apparent reason for this past month and half so i decide to make a new tumblr! it's been a while since i've been in an fandom space so i decide to stick to an more niche(? i guess) fandom with not so many people still here as it's not as overwhelming for me.

these girls have been with me since 2013 and 2014 respectively with many many different changes! however their core characteristics have stayed the same.

i was planning on drawing them about a week ago buuut my drawing tablet has decided to die on me and my only drawings of them are from <2022. which isn't ideal. then i remembered a few days ago i can just create them on sims, so for the time being i'll use ts4 as a way to visualize them until i get a new tablet!

a little brief introduction to them -

vivienne is my high school story prime mc and she transfers over to berry high in her sophomore year. bc of this the timeline is a bit different to the canon one (especially since the choices games are canon to the original timeline) as in my tl hss prime takes course from her sophomore to senior year (there's NO way all the stuff that happens in hssp happens in one year!!! pixelberry u can not convince me otherwises!!!). side confession but despite hss/hwu being an defining part of me i've never touched choices... which means i've just never considered were those games would fit into my timeline. so i guess i'd consider my tl an au.

agnieszka or angel is my hollywood u mc who i miss dearly and i'll forever be torn up by the fact that hwu is unplayable now. she's vivienne half sister (vivi is a product of affair. there's A LOT of lore that i'll hopefully go into in later posts) and the two aren't aware of eachothers existence until around 2010. despite this angel loves the fact she has an younger sister, even in unconventional circumstances, and wishes to grow closer to her. vivienne is hesitant at first but by 2018ish they have a very good relationship!! sure it takes a while but the two had to overcome a lot when it comes to their family.

for the years vivienne starts berry high in 2013 and agnieszka starts hwu in 2014 (basically when the games came out). they don't start having an consistent relationship until about mid-to-late 2015.

also this is my first time doing character sheets that aren't heavily drawn so hopefully they aren't too hard to read/understand. this is all i'll say for now as i don't want this post to get too long! i'll drop more info abt them as this month goes by.

HSS playthrough part 14 - hope's story. this one's a bit shorter as its JUST hope's story so it's more like half an hour -- i've been mostly playing in chunks of an hour and jumping around questlines, so i often wonder about the watchability of these videos, but i suppose their true main purpose is for my own archiving/understanding of the game as i work on a big long retrospective about it (and maybe about pixelberry in general, since as a game dev studio its changed so much since the HSS days)
