🔹A few thoughts about Sulley, why i like his character and his relationship with Boo🔹
(personal opinion and views, I can say the most predictable basic things, and yet I want to express my personal feelings, it's corny but it's honest work)
(also a lot of words..and doodles)
I apologize in advance if I expressed myself in some way unclear or incorrectly and for grammatical mistakes, since I am not strong in english ")
Personality and appearances:
All of the Monsters Inc. characters have great designs that complement their personalities perfectly, and Sulley is no exception.
I LOVE how his design perfectly captures his character. He has soft and sharp features, just like he himself can be *soft and sharp* at the same time. He has a gentle nature, but under the right circumstances can become formidable and even dangerous. In other words, I like the fact that while he is calm, you may forget or even not know HOW scary he can be in the moment, that is, exactly until he HIMSELF shows it. A great way to show a character's kind nature without forgetting who they are and what status they have in their world.
I olso like that he is not a *perfect do-everything-right* protagonist. He is impulsive, he listens to himself and his opinion is based on his own considerations, often incorrect or risky.
People can say that only at Monsters University Sulley is so *rebellious* and only does what he wants (hinting at how calm and humble he is in the first film as opposed to the prequel) and, based on my personal observations, I can say that he is ALWAYS like this, he acts for his own reasons, and yes, he acts from considerations of *do what is right*, but what is *right* everyone understands in their own way.
For example, like when he risked his and his best friend’s life/career for the sake of a human child whom he had known for a couple of days, or when he cheated at games and then goes to save Mike from the human world. Always impulsive decisions based on feelings and one’s own understanding of what is *right* at the moment.
He also thought that it would be right if he was in the company of high-status monsters and behaved the same way as them (because his family and those around him expect this from him, I believe), and he realized that he was wrong only when he understand (and saw) that he could be himself and that he can’t judge everyone by their appearance and *status* (specifically in that scene when Mike secretly brought everyone to the MI in order to show the uniqueness and dissimilarity of each monster)
What I mean is that his worldview is always changing based on what he sees and feels, and he always acts based on his personal understanding of what is right and don't, which I find actually a very interesting character trait for a protagonist (not that it's super rare, but still).
Also how many different emotions he can express, from joy to rage, I always liked characters with a rich *baggage* of emotions, and who at the same time do not irritate, do not become hysterical with or without reason, and who simply use emotions at the right moments, not going too far, that is, not capricious and not *drama queens*.
Another small detail I really like is the fact that Sulley is very aware of his physical strength and never brags or uses it unnecessarily. He is VERY strong, and somehow communicates and contacts with the smallest creatures without any problems, and does not even really use his full strength in a fight, only as self-defense or protection of another.
I also see a lot of different opinions about his prequel version, but honestly? I only started to like him more after university. He was shown from a completely different side, as was his development from who he was to who we know from the first movie. Showed what kind of character he is without Boo. What he thinks about, what he worries about, what kind of relationships he builds, his goals, what did it take for him to get to that point in his life that is shown in the first movie. Love how he went through his arc from "worst to best", how he accepted and realized his mistakes, and how he gradually became attached to those who are dear to him.
(the way he expressed himself to Mike at the end? Being the only one who told him the truth, while highlighting his virtues, thereby showing how attentive he is to those around him and how much he values those who help him)
Although I’m not really a big fan of the prequel, and I also think some scenes from there are little...questionable, and how Sulley turned out different from the version from inc, but in GENERAL I can connect these two images together, I can understand why Sulley behaves this way (given his problems with family and self-esteem), and how in fact it fits with him as an adult.
I can also say that in general I like the way he is written in Monsters at work, despite the fact that he and Mike don’t play a special role for the series, I’m just glad that he act's like himself and hasn’t been spoiled, he’s still trying to make the right choices in life, dealing with a situation that he never even thought about or was ever prepared for, and I just like the little funny moments with him.
Of course, you can't do without *questionable scenes* and sins (and animation ")), but overall I'm quite pleased.
(and I noticed that the writers kinda combined his images from mu and mi, big fan of this decision)
Overall, we have an interesting, well-written protagonist, with excellent design, a great movie as a solo film, and even prequel/series as a good bonus.
Why I think his relationship with Boo is so beautifully written:
First of all, I like the way they met for the first time.
Namely, HOW Sulley reacted, because we know that children are not only *toxic* for monsters, they are literally consumables for them, without feelings, without any rights, which means do with them what you want, your conscience will not torture you.
But Sulley never harmed her, although he could have used any means to get rid of her, because at that time he did not perceive her as a *person*, and still acted with caution. Tried to calm her down, cheer her up, and even sang her a song before bed, although he shouldn’t have even tried?
He understands that she is a living being after all.
And he actually care about this *creature*, he himself decided to bring her home, stayed up all night making a costume for her, he even realized that she is a girl and referred to her correctly all the time, and not as a *thing* (even worried that she was in the men's locker room? ")).
I just love the fact that he treats Boo well INITIALLY, he doesn’t hate her, he doesn’t think she’s a burden that needs to be gotten rid of.
He truly begins to worry about her when he finally becomes attached, but even at the very beginning he treats her tenderly as possible. And it’s just very cute to watch how they gradually get closer and Sulley becomes more and more attached to her, which makes him openly ignore all the advices of his best friend, whom he listened to and supported unconditionally before. He begins to worry about her so much that he no longer pays attention to everything that happens around him, he doesn’t just want to get rid of her quickly, but wants to protect her and do everything possible so that she gets home safely, and does not end up in wrong hands. And this attachment became SO strong that he was ready to leave his friend alone in the human world, risk his life saving her, and he no longer cares about HIS position and condition, she became his number one priority, and this is very damn touching honesty.
And, of course, THAT ONE scene, key to Sulley's development as a character, a scene, where he accidentally scares Boo.
A moment, where his whole consciousness is turned upside down, all the experiences that he went through became meaningless, and the work to which he devoted his life turned out to be cruel exploitation, in addition, a huge feeling of guilt, which will be difficult to get rid of for a long time, and everything that was important in his life ceased to have value, everything except the safety of this one *thing*, the *thing* he shouldn't have felt anything for.
I really love this scene, it perfectly conveys the mood of what happened, when you feel pity, compassion and understanding for both sides.
(you'd think that Sulley stop scaring kids just because of this scene, but honestly? I’m more than sure that it would be difficult for him to do this after meeting Boo, after what he experienced with her, it would be difficult to continue working in this direction)
And one of the best details for me is the fact that this event does not remain without a trace for the characters, this experience has consequences, they don't just continue to live as if nothing happened, Sulley realize that people are also living individuals with feelings that should not suffer, as a result of which he not only changes himself, but also changes his environment for the better, considering that the majority simply will not understand him, he considers it his duty to do something to somehow change and influence the situation (even without the fact that the energy of laughter is stronger than scream), and never again connect his life with what he feels guilty about.
The final scene with them is also so touching.
The way Sulley says goodbye to her, knowing that he will never see her again, everything he had to go through for one single moment.
Betrayal, discovery of a conspiracy, expulsion, a quarrel with a close friend, disappointment in himself and his life, he even almost lost his own life several times, and all this was experienced in order to bring home one little girl.
And I'm just sincerely glad that they didn't end there, all this time I wish I had seen at least a little short with them (because I just have to squeak with joy every time Boo is mentioned in the series :"))
I know that the first movie ended perfectly and there is no need for a sequel, but as a fan I’m too weak :)
Honestly, this is the shortest and most general “essay” I can write about him as a character, if I had my way (and enough strength/knowledge in english) I would describe every key scene with him.
So, that’s all, I'm glad I was able to express my thoughts about a character that is important to me, at least in this format, and if you read to the end, thank you for your attention! 💙💜
(still waiting for a full-fledged sequel from Pixar and hope that it will come out acceptable...)
#absolutely fantastic analysis of sulley i love it!!! 🩵💜#i love how at the start you can see how different sull's attitude towards boo is at the start from mike just from subtle hints#like how mike refers to boo as “it ” while sulley refers to her as “she”#she really had a huge impact on him and you can tell#and how his and boo's relationship develop in mi is so wholesome and perfect#love the stuff about his impulsiveness and inclination to do what's right in the moment and connecting it with his actions in mu and mi#funny sulley's the main character of mi but he doesn't get as much speculation as mike at least in my experience this was nice

according to the comics they dress up as humans and do human themed activities!
i could definitely imagine halloween would be like their christmas too, i also saw october/halloween being a busy period for them. like i can imagine scream quotas would be bigger around this time and scare companies would want to to take advantage of the spooky atmosphere to get more screams, since kids would feel escpecially spooked around october and especially on halloween night. like i can see halloween being a big night for scarers, maybe on that day they even have a competition and prize for whoever gets the most scream by the end of their shift for each scare floor. then maybe they celebrate humanween after and have a break when october is over!
a halloween special would be sickkkk i really wish they made one
So does anyone else actually wonder how the Monsters celebrate Halloween?
Is it like their version of Christmas?
Back when Scaring was still a thing, did they take days off from scaring children on Halloween?
I'm surprised this franchise never had any Halloween special tbh

Since you made that post about the Monster World and their Beauty standards
How attractive do you think Randall is by the monster world standards?
Obviously in Monster's University he's MEANT to be seen as this wimpy, scrawny geek and a loser 🤓
But what about during the Monster's Inc era?
Out of the 3 Main Monsters (Mike, Sulley, and Randall) we see that Mike is the only one who isn't "Bitchless" or "Maidenless" (as the Twitter crowd would say 🙄)
Which I find hilariously ironic considering Mike is the only of those 3 who wasn't a scarer nor does he really fit into any of the Beauty standards 🤔
(Now from a real life perspective I can understand why Randall and Sulley are single due to Randall's status as the villain and giving Sulley a love interest would've distracted too much attention away from his relationship with Boo)
But it is kinda funny from an In-Universe perspective because you'd think Randall and ESPECIALLY Sulley would both have an army of Women (and Men 🌈) trying to vouch for their attention due to their status as the 2 biggest Top Scarers
Tho with Randall I suppose you could argue that his personality was probably a turn off for anyone who actually might've tried to date him or get to know him (I love the dude but honestly he seems like he'd be kinda difficult to deal with in a relationship).
Not sure what the excuse for Sulley is tho lol
hi i will gladly talk about randall’s hotness 😋
okay for real though i think randall would actually be considered handsome (i swear im not biased) randall definitely possesses scary traits, from sharp teeth, big independently moving eyes, multiple limbs, etc., and has a general scary appearance, so i think it’s fair to say he’s considered quite attractive. also the fact he was in ror; the top frat in MU, presumably the most elite university in monstropolis, and is a scarer, the best career you could ever have (and with him and sulley being the two candidates to get the all time scare record, one of the best in the whole monster world??) probably helps too
another thing i want to mention that i’ve thought about is there are many round cyclops monsters like mike and big horned furry monsters like sulley, but there isn’t really any monster in the monster world (or in other media) that quite looks like randall.
joy has reptilian features but she looks very different from randall (though i’d like to point out that she was the number 1 scarer at fear co., which could be more evidence that randall is very scary and therefore more attractive) mr. crummyham bears some resemblance to randall, but he has smoother skin, a skinnier body, and a very different face
other than the fact that the vas in mi bear resemblance to their characters to me, randall has such a fine distinct design, so something i thought about is randall’s attractiveness could be compared to his va steve buscemi in our world. there are many people who consider buscemi as handsome, and i've also seen some people describe his look to be “unique”. with randall having a design so distinct from the other monsters and possessing scary/attractive traits, i feel like randall’s attractiveness in the monster world could also be described the same way
i definitely agree with the idea that they didn’t include any romantic stuff for sulley and randall because it would be unnecessary and distracting, but that aside,,
i’m sure there are many monsters who were attracted to sulley. sulley's been the number 1 scarer at monsters inc for a very long time, is the son of a famous scarer, and is shown to be very popular both in and at work. for one, these two in mu seemed attracted to him
in mi, on his way to work, basically everyone knows him and greets him, both on the street and at work. so in that way, there are actually a lot of monsters that vie for sulley's attention (including the fcking CDA 😭)
maybe some monsters are nervous around sulley and think he's out of their league. even though he is friendly, he does have a very high status so he may be intimidating to talk to; like look at how nervous needleman is here when talking to him hehe
on randall’s end, though he’s probably not nearly as social, he probably gets a fair share of recognition (though is probably very overshadowed by sulley) but there are likely some monsters that don’t like his personality and because of that aren't interested, or are scared/intimidated to actually talk to him. but they can admire him from an appearance and achievement perspective, though perhaps from a distance
but as you said, i definitely think that personality plays a big role into which monsters are considered attractive
first, mike is full of personality, being charming, funny and witty. he's shown to be a smooth talker, whether flirting with celia or distracting waternoose and randall with convincing lies. mike may not fit into the "scary" beauty standard, but i think some monsters don't really care. and i know that celia genuinely thinks mike is handsome :] mike was also very likely the smartest scaring student on mu’s campus. but judging by mike's locker in the credits for mu, celia may have started crushing on mike around the time when he was just a cafeteria worker and i like to think she fell for mike early on for both his looks and personality 🩷
sulley on the other hand is shown to be a bit clumsy and not as smooth with his words, so he probably has no rizz 😔✊️/jk (it's v cute though)
randall's personality is pretty self explanatory LOL, though interestingly, even though randall is a prick, his coworkers were genuinely happy for him when he became the scare leader and when they thought he broke the scare record. so i feel like he’s only directly mean to sulley, mike and fungus, while he just tolerates everyone else (unless they cross his path) like his coworkers are probably aware of his bitter attitude but may undermine it since he's not directly mean to them and randall probably has respect for being #2 in the whole comany, because i don't think all those monsters would be happy for him if he treated all of them how he treats the three i mentioned. and i mean he showed a liking towards johnny so we know he's capable of not feeling utter hate for everyone. though he may not always be directly mean to his other coworkers, i’m sure his attitude is still noticed and deemed undesirable for lots of monsters. i feel like randall would be viewed as skilled and attractive but a dick lol
but in the end i think a big reason why i think sulley and randall aren't in a relationship is because they’re so career focused.
sulley probably wasn't interested or focused on getting into a relationship since he was focused on his career and reaching the scare record. before he met boo, he didn't have much else going on for him outside of scaring. he does work out as a hobby but even that was scaring related; mike even calls him out for this
it was likely the same with randall, and between the scare record and the scream extractor, he probably has no time or desire to get into a relationship. and his commitment to his job and one-upping sulley could impair his attention in a relationship (you better believe this is something i incorporated into lia and randall's relationship but lets not get into that right now haha ☉‿☉) there may have been monsters who were brave enough to confess to him but he's likely rejected him because his priority is the grind 😤💯💰
in maw sulley may have lost some of his reputation by bringing laugh energy to mi, plus jill broadcasting to all of monstropolis that sulley cheated in the scare games, got expelled, and was associated with the convicted criminal who is waternoose, probably didn't help his popularity. though after the end of maw season 2 i know more monsters will warm up to him, not to mention there are probably many who admire him already
(where did they get this image 😭)
if anyone johnny is probably the pinnicle of monster attractiveness, from appearance, skills, demenour and status. i was cracking up over how much game this man had, like everyone wanted him 😭 he got with claire, then it was shown that jill, tylor's mom, and his grandma were shown to be down bad for him (not the generational thirsting) not to mention chet and randall wanting to get his attention, like fck this mf has game, he was probably on a magazine with "sexiest monster alive" on the cover LMAO
he was whole package, well until, you know

Hey yo Randall chat!
Y'all notice Randall's bed spread in MU?
Is this shit supposed to be some kind of off-brand Louis Vuitton?
(The reason I say Off-brand is because I see what looks like Randall's initials are in place of where the LV is supposed to be)
What do you think Randall fans? 🧐🤔

yes!! i talk about it a bit in an old post of my human randall design but basically my thoughts are that they are custom made for him! (or it's an insane coincidence lol)
thanks to this detail i've headcannoned that randall's favorite brand is louis vuitton lmao (or whatever the monster world equivalent is) i think randall really likes this pattern/brand so he/his family had gotten his possesions customized with it but with his initials. he not only has the pattern on his bedsheets, but also his carpet, bags, and trunks. this could suggest that randall was pretty well off if he could afford to indulge in his tastes like this, on top of attending a prestigious university and living in a dorm room on campus
something i noticed before is that randall's scare card says that his home is monstropolis as opposed to sulley's who says his home is sludge falls. to me, i imagined living in monstropolis to be equivalent to living in nyc which is insanely expensive. this detail in his scare card suggests that unlike sulley, randall's lived in monstropolis all his life
actually, mike's card also says his home is monstropolis and though he's not the focus rn and i don't really think mike was rich growing up or anything, mike along randall very much seem like they'd be monstropolis/nyc natives to me you know? and funny enough a thing that i found out before is both billy crystal and steve buscemi (mike and randall's vas) were born in nyc, while john goodman (sulley) was born in missouri, just like how mike and randall were likely born and raised in monstropolis and sulley was born in sludge falls
now whether other members of randall's family are scarers was never addressed. if not, his parent(s) could've just been well off or just had a non scaring occupation that still pays well. if yes, then they might not have been too popular, as randall isn't recognized for it, unlike how sulley is for being the son of scarer bill sullivan. and idk if randall would be as desperate to get in with the popular crowd in university if he already had a name for himself. but then again perhaps the fact that his parents may or may not be well known could give him more determination to put his/the boggs name in the spotlight
also though i think there's much more to randall wanting to get in with roar omega roar in mu than what i'm about to mention here, randall being part of "the top fraternity on campus" could be desireable for his resume and be a way to help out his career goals and recognition (also i like that ror also has luxurious taste)
randall's family/wealth/social status is not explicitly mentioned anywhere and he doesn't go flaunting it, and though i do think this is due to his more timid nature in terms of his personality in monsters university, i like to think that randall (then and now) likes keeping his status fairly private. other than his side of the dorm, there wouldn't be anything others could use to indicate randall's status. the monsters university guide actually refers to randall wanting to keep his side of the dorm normal but tasteful, and not wanting to stand out too much
i make it subtle on purpose but i add this detail whenever i draw my human randall by giving him a belt with this pattern to suggest his personal taste and give him something unique that also gives a little glimpse into his character :]
randall may or may not be rich, but to him it doesn't matter. how i see it is that randall wants to be recognized not for his wealth, but for his skills as a scarer. to him his wealth is irrelavant. unlike sulley who would let everyone in university know that he was a sullivan and the son of a famous scarer, randall keeps his social status to himself and his fancy aesthetic confined to his dorm room. not once does he talk about money or a desire to be wealthy. he doesn't want to be seen as a rich boy, he want to get recognition instead for his hard work, skills and achievements, such as later on when he tries to get the scare record, or revolutionize the scaring industry through his invention of the scream extractor. and of course beating the golden boy that is sulley. i know old versions of randall in mi, he was very much going to be about flaunting his wealth and being a scarer just for the money, and i'm glad that was changed
whether he had money or not or what his roots are, randall knows that he worked hard to get where he and as still does, and that is what he wants to be recognized for. though he mayy have a guilty pleasure for the luxurious patterns showed as its on almost everything he owns lol
