#163 - Hoothoot (RSE, ORAS)
Hoothoot has an internal organ that senses and tracks the earth's rotation. Using this special organ, this Pokémon begins hooting at precisely the same time every day.

Escaflowne X Pokemon Crossover Fanart!
I just watched The Vision of Escaflowne in full for the first time this year (in the past, I only caught bits and pieces back when On Demand was a thing), and I loved the characters in it so much that I had to give them some Pokemon!
Van and Folken - Since they are half Draconian, I think Dragon type Pokemon would suit them well, especially gentle-looking dragons like the Dragonite evolution line. Neither of the two brothers are grown up yet here, so I gave them Dratini and Dragonair.
Allen - Honestly, I just love that he has a pet owl, so I gave him more owls! Any excuse to draw more Hoothoots and Noctowls.
Merle, Naria, and Eriya - Three different kinds of Meowth for the three cat girls of the show! Side note: I like how different their ears are from the usual anime cat girl.
Dilandau - Giving him fire type dogs like Arcanine, its Hisuian variant, and Houndoom was an easy choice since he loves burning things and has a connection to dogs/dogmen.
Hitomi - I gave her two other Pokemon that can see glimpses of the future: Gothitelle and Xatu. Both of them have Pokedex entries suggesting that they sometimes experience distress from the visions they see, so Hitomi would be able to understand their pain in a way most others couldn't, and vice-versa.

So this Au still needs a name, BUT
I have figured out what Most of the pokemon evolved from! It only took uh, lemme look at a clock, a week or three!
For those not interested in clicking a link, it's a pokemon/dc crossover but pokemon is straight up just a Gotham thing. Like, the flora and fauna and everything else have become corrupted/ mutated/ adapted, etc into strange creatures with stranger abilities thanks to the chemicals, magic, death pits, curses, and everything else all mixing together.
So anyway, have a list of what each pokemon originally were before Gotham got a hold of them. Some things brought into Gotham (such as via zoos, museums, or rogues or whatever) and others always there. Do keep in mind I am (mostly) not including Legendaries because I'm still not sure if I want those in the Au yet lol.

⏵Most non-sapient plant variation has happened in things such as berries & fruits
⏵It’s noted that many of the creatures show signs of convergent evolution to other animals & plants, especially in further mutations
⏵Several animals & other things not native to Gotham or New Jersey were brought in as experiments or for the Gotham Zoo which were affected over time
Like IRL Animals & Plants, They Can Have Mutations & Color Variations:
Normal color/Pattern [Very Common]
“Shinies” [Uncommon color variant]
Piebaldism/Vitiligo [Patches of no melanism]
Albinism [No melanism]
Leucism [No melanism save for eyes]
Melanism [Excess black]
Erythrism [Excess red]
Axanthism [No yellow & more blue]
Xanthochromism [Excess yellow]
Chimerism [2 offspring fused]
Gynandromorphism [Split & both male/female]

Strigidae
Tumblr media
Also just called owls, but Strigidae is very fun to say, so I'm going to say that. Strigidae are a genus of nocturnal birds of prey pokemon. They're known for their sharp talons, binocular eyesight, and silent flying feathers. The word Strigidae itself means "shrill," which is definitely what these pokemon are known for.
Because of Rookidee'a feathers resembling an owls feathers, many people think that the Rookidee line are Strigiformes. But, they're not and are pure corvuses.
Strigidae Pokemon
Hoothoot/Noctowl
Rowlet/Dartrix/Decidueye
Spritzee/Aromatisse (they're also in the Corvus family and Phoenicopteridae (flamigo) family)

If Jake and Chris had full teams of Pokemon, what Pokemon would they chose?
OH BOY a Big One, okey Dokey I’ll give this a try best as I can though I might have some leniency towards mostly older generations as those are the ones I grew up with
Chris:
- Charizard (His starter back when he was a Charmander; also is rare Blue Flame Charizard)
- Cubone
- Dragonite
- Cyndaquil
- Riolu
Jake:
- Raichu (Classic; Starter back as a Pichu)
- Hitmontop
- HootHoot
- Koffing
- Pidgeotto
They might not be the absolute most orthodox line ups but it sure these fit these characters best as I can tell
Thanks for the ask @confusedhummingbird XD this was fun

Owliversary Year 2
Hoo-ray! Well, it's a month late, but this is what I wanted to draw for my second Owliversary - and this is why this year I want to focus on my own work, since this should have been in December. nvn I've really enjoyed being into birdies ever since running into Berdly, and I really appreciate tons of birds now! 2023 had a lot - from Tulin and Penn in Zelda, pokemon with the Quaxly line, and Hoothoot and Ducklett added to the DLC (I want to make a group pokemon picture too but that's separate.) Pip and Freddy from T.O.T.S. is still a big thing I'm into - and Flamigo and Eiscue in pokemon reminded me of them! Kazooie got me into CBT, Kuru Kuru Kururin was a fun game I've always been into - and shortly after buying it, it came to NSO and I beat it. nvn My Bird-Day cake and sticking candles in everyone's tasty butts was a treat - Daddy Ducky, who stemmed from my obsession with Yosh-E-O's nakie dad duck, had a bunch of fun stories and art I made and stuff. :3 Baby Huey was a funny weird bird to get into with a fun cartoon and movie. Oh yeah and the King Penuin from the Mario Movie was a new fun surprise character. :3 There are others not mention - Mario Wonder had cool birds in it too! But, I'm blathering. nvo Thank hoo-ever in feathers I've had fun with this last year too. nvn And maybe a NSFW version added to the proper places later. My other birdy collage from last year was meant to have my actual bird friends in it so - maybe next time~!

Memories of Gold and Red (A Lost Silver Story)
Footsteps echo off of the wooden floors and empty walls of Sprout Tower. The only other sound that filled the usually dead air was the creaking of the giant wooden beam that acted as support for the tower itself. Gold looks around with worried eyes at his current environment. He didn't recognize this floor of the previously explored tower, memories of his previous fights against the wise sages and their barrage of Hoothoots and Bellsprouts flashing in his mind. There were no widows, the only things that allowed each floor of the tower to be lit. There were no ladders that acted as entrances or exits, making him wonder how he even got to the room in the first place. There were no windows either, the only light being the flickering flames Hurry's back.
He frowns when he looks down at the Cyndaquil that he chose for his first Pokemon. The small fire-type was quite sickly when he received it from Professor Elm, he was even warned that it was born with a eventually terminal level illness. However, Gold was determined to raise him and help him grow big and strong. He lets out a gasp when Hurry suddenly lets out a flurry of coughs and collapses onto the floor, wheezing breaths coming out of the fire mouse as it was being scooped up in Gold's arms and carried down a hall that suddenly appeared.
"It's ok... You're going to be ok, Hurry." Gold mumbles softly as his eyes dart between the dimming hall and his weak Pokemon. His racing heart manages to beat faster when he sees several eyes staring at him from the dark walls. He soon comes to a screeching halt when he eventually reaches a lone sign, a few Unowns hovering over it and spelling out L-E-A-V-E. Gold nods frantically, trying to fight back tears of fear for his sick partner.
"Yes... Yes please. Let me leave." He mutters loud enough for the letter-like Pokemon to hear, hoping that they would somehow get him and Hurry out of this hellish version of a familiar tower. His eyes widen in panic as the flames on Hurry's back grown dimmer and dimmer. "No... no, no, no, no, no...." He cries softly, shaking his head and choking back tears. He holds Hurry close, tears finally slipping past his eyes as the usually warm Pokemon was now cold and lifeless in his arms.
"Hurry... Hurry, I'm so sorry..." He cries, quickly falling onto his knees and quietly sobbing. Gold doesn't realize that his arms were now empty until he went to wipe his eyes. He looks around his new location, an empty field filled with grey stones. The Unown had answered his plea, he was out of that tower. However, he was now all alone. Well, save for a few new Unowns that hovered above a blank stone, their letters spelling out H-E D-I-E-D. "Wh-What... Who died?" Gold asks before looking back down at the stone. Etched into the stone was a phrase that read, R.I.P Hurry.
Gold didn't have time to cry or even react as the eyes of the Unown soon began to glow with psychic power. He soon finds himself in a new hallway. This one was lined with red wooden panels on both the floor and walls, the sudden brightness of the scenery made Gold's eyes hurt. He stands up to start walking before he feels immediately collapses back onto his knees. A sharp pain goes through each of his arms and legs, preventing him from moving. He opens his mouth, but nothing comes out. His face contorting in pain along with his silent scream. He grits his teeth together and clenches his jaw as the pain continued to ebb through his body, though it soon started to fade when the Unown picked up his body and sets him on his feet.
"Thanks..." Gold croaks out, wiping any remaining tears from his eyes before pausing when he looks at his hand. His tears were... red? Surely that must've been a trick of the light in the room. The red coloration was just getting to him. He lets out a breath before he starts to walk down the long hallway, feeling more eyes on him as he glanced at the walls. He continues down the seemingly never ending path until he reaches what seemed to be the end. A lone person stood at the end, facing the wall. His cap covering messy looking black hair, a familiar gleam in his eyes when he looked at Gold.
"Red...?" Gold whispered in shock. Red, as usual, didn't say a word and instead lets out his Pikachu. The electric mouse looked differently than how Gold remembered. Its usual cheerful expression was replaced with one of sorrow, like the Pokemon was about to burst into tears at any moment. Without even moving or saying a word, one of Gold's Pokeballs pops open and summons a pink Celebi.
Gold remembered when he first met the Onion Fairy Pokemon in the Ilex Forest. Though now, it appeared to be badly hurt. Half of it's body looked like it had been viciously torn off, leaving exposed insides loosely hanging from the missing chunk of its body. Celebi's good eye looks at Gold, clearly expecting a command from him.
"Perish Song..." He says, his voice monotone as if someone else said the name of the move for him. He watches as Celebi nods and begins to sing, a sorrowful but beautiful and haunting melody filling the air. The move seemed to only last a single turn as Pikachu refused to attack, instead choosing to look at Red. The former champion gave Gold and both Pokemon a sad smile before collapsing to the ground, all life in his body seemingly sapped away by the song. Pikachu lets out soft sniffs and sad squeaks as it moved over to Red, going underneath his arm and nuzzling under his chin before closing its eyes and joining its trainer in tearful eternal slumber. Gold feels his eyes slowly close as well before falling unconscious.
He wakes up with a gasp, panting softly as he looks around a new location. Celebi and the bodies of Red and Pikachu were gone. Now he was back in his bedroom in New Bark Town, a small smile growing on his face when he realizes this. "A nightmare... It was all a nightmare." He breathes in relief, letting out a laugh as he gets out of bed and runs down the stairs. His smile grows more when he hears the voices of both his mother and Kris in the living room. He soon stops once he reaches the bottom of the stairs, his smile fading slightly when he realizes that both of their voices sounded sad and remorseful. His smile fading completely when the sound of crying hits his ears.
"Oh Kris, I wish I could've held him one last time before... before he..." His mother cries before her words turn into heartbroken sobs. Kris gives her a worried look and gently rubs her back, her blue eyes filled with sadness.
'Before what?' Gold thought to himself. He walks closer and his eyes widen when he sees what was clutched in his mother's hand.
A framed photo... His photo...
That's when he noticed the other items that were on the coffee table. Flowers, cards, unlit candles and little statues of Pokémon. A mini memorial.
For him...
"Mom...? Mom... I'm right here. I'm ok..." Gold says as he attempts to get his mother's attention.
Only for the pain from before to return. This time it felt like his neck was being shredded from the inside, a metallic taste hitting his tongue as he coughed harshly. Tears flowed from Gold's eyes as he coughed and gagged, red droplets soon scattering onto the couch.
"Mom! Please! I'm right here!" He hoarsely cries out, his voice merely a rasp "I'm ok! Mom! Kris! Please... say something!"
It was no use... No matter how much he screamed and begged... He knew that they wouldn't hear him...
"Please... Mom... Kris... I'm scared..." He whimpers before collapsing to the floor. Sniffles and hiccups fill what soon turned back into the stone filled field. He peeks his head up and looks around, a new set of Unown hovering over a new stone. This one had a new set of words etched into it.
R.I.P Ethan Gold...
"What...?" Gold asks, shaking his head as he looked at the tombstone. His tombstone. This wasn't possible. How was it possible? The chirps of the Unown gain his attention as he looked up at the Psychic types.
"I'm dead..." He read aloud, his voice a whisper of shock and horror.
As soon as the words left his lips, a pain that was stronger than before ripped through his body. He screamed and cried as he collapsed to the ground. Every part of his body feeling like it was being torn and shredded from his body.
Even as it eventually came to an end, he cried. An unending stream of tears flowing from his eyes. He sobbed louder than he had been able to. Painful and sorrowed wails as every memory he had flashed through his mind. His journey. All of the people he had known. His mother, Kris, Silver, Professor Elm. He would never see them again.
He was alone... mournful... scared...
Lost.
(Extra scene below the cut)
Footsteps echo off of the wooden floors and empty walls of Sprout Tower. As he walked, Gold thought to himself...
Haven't I been here before?
And... why does it feel like I've done this more than once?

Me roasting Johto.
Chikorita: AKA, Johto's biggest punching bag.
Bayleef: I can't believe this pokemon was originally going to look nothing like its pre - or post evolution!
Meganium: The most forgettable final grass starter.
Cyndaquil: How does it feel having Fuecoco take all the credit for breaking the Chinese Zodiac theory?
Quilava: Or the sausage shrew as I like to call it.
Typhlosion: I can't believe Gamefreak took away its idle neck flames for nearly a decade!
Totodle: The Feucoco for water type fans.
Croconaw: (cue Flintstones theme song here)
Feraligatr: I can't stop thinking of that infamous back sprite that made it look like it was thicc.
Sentret: (Engineer voice) Spy is sapping my sentret!
Furret: Oh, look, it's a ground type! No, wait, the anime's just stupid.
Hoothoot: Its name is literally just the sound its real-life counterpart makes.
Noctowl: Sorry, Noctowl, but the other regional birds are just cooler than you.
Ledyba: Look at that thousand yard stare. There's not a single thought behind those eyes.
Ledian: If it didn't look it up, I would've never guessed that it was based on a superhero.
Spinarak: You're not a true spider, you only have six legs!
Ariados: You have the most forgettable signature move.
Crobat: I feel like Gamefreak just decided to slap the friendship evolution onto it because they could.
Chinchou: What's with the plus sign eyes?
Lanturn: Look out, Seel and Dewgong, you got competition for the least creative name.
Pichu: I can't believe pichu has a special form that's just it having a tuff of fur on its ear.
Cleffa: Was this pokemon really necessary?
Igglybuff: For real, the idea of bouncing and never being able stop is terrifying!
Togepi: The poster child for baby pokemon.
Togetic: That neck though.
Natu: It looks like it's judging me.
Zatu: I feel bad for it, since it's in constant dread due to seeing horrible futures.
The Mareep line: Beep beep, I'm a sheep. I said beep beep, I'm a sheep.
Bellossom: How does it feel to be shorter than your pre evolution?
Marill: (Insert pikablu joke here)
Azurill: The water bunny egg pokemon.
Sudowoodo: What if I bring out the hose?
Politoad: We finally have a frog pokemon that actually looks like a frog.
The hoppin line: Dendelion, a million little wishes blowing across the sky.
Aipom: No thoughts, head empty.
Sunkurn: The most useless pokemon.
Sunflora: Boring...
Yanma: One rock throw, and you're dead.
Wooper: The derpy pokemon.
Quagsire: The Family Guy pokemon.
Espeon: How does it feel to be overshadowed by your edgy counterpart?
Umbreon: You know people only like you because you're edgy, right?
Murkrow: I'm glad it got an evolution later on because it really needed it.
Slowking: Despite being a genius, you still look so derpy.
Misdreavus: This was the most random pokemon to get a paradox form.
Unown: Cool concept, poor execution.
Wobbuffet: Jessie's comedic relief pokemon.
Girafarig: Its beta design is proof that sometimes less is more.
Pineco: Am I the only one who wants to know what it actually looks like?
Foretress: Stop exploding and let me catch you, dammit!
Dunsparce: Remember when people wanted Drampa to be your evolution?
Gligar: Its color pallet is so consistent.
Steelix: You're no crystal onix.
Snubull: Too bad you're only known for being a bitch thanks to the anime.
Granbull: Are those tusks under your lips painful?
Qwilfish: Anyone hungry for some fugu?
Scizor: Big meaty claws!
Shuckle: Dorkly's biggest punching bag.
Heracross: Its female gender difference makes almost as little since as Wobbuffet's.
Sneasel: Why wasn't this a version exclusive alongside gligar, it would've made more sense.
Teddiursa: It's so cute, I wanna hug it forever!
Ursaring: Oh God, never mind!
Slugma and Magcargo: It was cruel to put these pokemon in the Hoenn region.
Swinub and Piloswine: No one cared about you until you got an evolution in Sinnoh.
Corsola: Just like Primape, no one cared about you until you died. That's just sad.
Remoraid: The urge to hold this pokemon like a pistol is killing me!
Octillery: You could've been so interesting, but they had to censor your design!
Delibird: 🎶It's Christmas all over again, yeah again!🎶
Mantine: It looks like it's starting into my soul, and I don't like it.
Houndour and Houndoom: I hate how these pokemon were locked behind post game!
Kingdra: Why does it look so pissed?
Phanpy: No, Phanpy, I do not find you destroying my home cute just because you were only playing!
Donphan: I'm a tire.
Porygon2: Porygon2, Electric Boogaloo!
Stantler: Do you think Delibirduses this pokemon to pull its sleigh?
Smeargle: Probably the most gimmicky gimmick pokemon to ever gimmick.
Tyrogue: No, anime, Tyrogue evolves into either Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, or Hitmotop, not the other way around.
Hitmontop: It's beyblade!
Smoochum: You think they wouldn't give a baby form for such a controversial pokemon so early on.
Elekid: Hey, could you please charge my phone for me?
Magby: Such an unfortunate Japanese name.
Miltank: Poor thing was demonized just because of that annoying brat, Whitney.
Blissy: Egg...
Raikou: The most overshadowed of the gen 2 legendaries.
Entei: That fact that a volcano erupts eveytime it barks makes it a miracle that there's still any life left in the pokemon world.
Suicune: Gamefreak really went out of their way to make sure this was the most popular of the legendary beasts.
Larvitar: Look at those stubby little arms.
Pupitar: Did we really need another caccoon pokemon.
Tyranitar: One brick break and your dead.
Lugia: The "why isn't this a water type?" pokemon.
Ho-Oh: This pokemon is seen as giving Ash immortality.
Celebi: You, you're the one responsible for all the event pokemon that use FOMO to trick fans into wasting their time going to Gamestop. Let that fact weigh heavily on your shoulders...
(Hoenn shall be next)

Hey so what I put Clive in Pokemon I don't think he'd be a trainer, mostly because I don't think he'd like watching his loved ones get hurt in battle (even if he knows it's largely inconsequential), so he just keeps his pokemon as pets. He has a pokemon related job, though, he breeds Alcremies. He's still a journalist, too, I imagine that Alcremies are docile and self-sufficient enough you can leave them alone for a few hours a day, but he still spends a lot of time with them and he loves them very much.
Pokemon aus aren't anything new, but the presentations of the first drawing is very much based on this post by @ceylonpure, so go and check that out!
Explanations for all of my choices for his team and a bit about how he got them under the cut :)
Corviknight (Obsidian) - It's a big metal bird! Giant robots and birds are kinda his whole deal, so I mushed em together and got a Corviknight. I imagine Obsidian was just a rookidee that hung out around Constance's estate that Clive befriended and eventually caught. She's been with him for so long, she's basically a therapy animal.
Porygon2 (Kyanite) - Similar reasoning to Obsidian, Porygon2 is a duck made of code. It being a program and not a robot is still fitting too, because I think he's a fucking NEEEEEEEERD. He saw a cool listing for a Porygon on Poke-Amazon or something and had Kyanite shipped from Kanto. He evolved it into a Porygon2 himself, and he refuses to evolve them any further because he doesn't wanna give them a virus.
Magnemite (Hematite) - It's a cute little magnet robot! I'll be honest I don't have much reason for putting it here other than "robot" and "looks kinda like Wheatley from Portal." There was an infestation of Magnemite around the local power plant, and while reporting on it, Clive managed to snag one for himself. Hematite is menacing his electronics to this day.
Hoothoot (Quartz) - Not only is it a kind of avian, it also has a clock motif, which lines up with the game Clive's from. I also imagine he's a bit of a night owl, so it's only fair he'd meet one. I think he might've just been hanging out under a tree one night when Quartz fell down and bonked him on the head. Then he caught her.

okay well it's nighttime now so i went back to lost tower and grabbed the spell tag/cleanse tag and a nighttime exclusive duskull encounter for the dex. tbh i expected something slightly more interesting at the top of the tower but the reward for using defog up there still isn't bad. forgot to take a pic of it but there was a bit of lore about fantina coming here a lot so that's nice
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then i was like man i should go catch a scyther but it's nighttime so it's only a 5% and that'll take a while... and then i got one first encounter LOL
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hoothoot literally took longer, like over 20 encounters despite being a 10%. why (i forgot to take a pic of the registration screen)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i also backtracked with my freshly acquired good rod to get a couple of Fish... the finneon line is so weird, all of the routes you can catch finneon/lumineon on are either really lategame or require backtracking to the early game from the point you get the good rod, so i think most players will never use one??
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
that being said i actually took banana the psyduck off the team (sorry banana i just wasn't feeling it after all) and replaced him with gummy the finneon because lumineon is one of my favorite sinnoh pokemon due to a nostalgic childhood memory, but i've never actually used one on a playthrough team and i'm assuming most people haven't either. i also decided i want to use a scizor because having a trade evo on the team is cool and i've never used a scyther/scizor on a playthrough team before despite really liking it. so say hello to gummy and mint, new team members :] they are underleveled i gotta get them up to speed...
i'm glad that other than luxray which i included because it's physically impossible for me to play a sinnoh game without one, i'm actually varying up the team a little, i feel like it's really easy to play sinnoh with the same pokemon more or less every time because of the weird encounter tables and stuff LMAO
anyway i'm gonna clear out route 210 and continue now

Finally picked up where I left off with Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu. I really want Nintendo to make a sequel. I know we'll never get one, but I'd love if Nintendo just started releasing a stripped-down Let's Go-style version of all their old third versions.
They don't even need to make two versions each time, just release one version for each generation and have it be "Let's Go [Region]" or "Let's Go [Third Version]" and have the player pick a starter or generate one via RNG at startup.
For Let's Go Johto/Crystal, the starters could be your choice of Marill and Sentret (alternatively Marill and Hoothoot). Frankly if the Generation has a pikaclone, the pikaclone needs to be one of the two. And Pikablu is the OG pikaclone.
For Let's Go Hoenn/Emerald, your starters could be Zigzagoon and Makuhita (alternative Skitty and....? Generation 3 is the hardest for me to pin down).
For Let's Go Sinnoh/Platinum, your starters could be Bidoof and Pachirisu. (No alternatives, this is the perfect pair. Since the Let's Go starters refuse to evolve, you can't even argue that it's unbalance due to Pachirisu being a one-stage line.)
I'm dying to see Johto in a Let's Go game. I need Johto in a Let's Go game.
Nintendo, I'm begging you. Grant me this one wish.

Note
I love owl Pokémon a lot since Hoothoot and Noctowl. I always refer to them as "the wise birds of the woods" because of how smart they are. In the Winding Woods in Kalos, every time I met a Noctowl, I'd bow to them and compliment them on their wisdom. And I was just as happy when I met the Rowlet line in Alola. Owl Pokémon are so majestic and wise.
That's the stereotype, at least!
I stopped finding them majestic after I almost lost a finger to a Rowlet while volunteering at an Alola Pokemon Center.
