Escaflowne X Pokemon Crossover Fanart!

I just watched The Vision of Escaflowne in full for the first time this year (in the past, I only caught bits and pieces back when On Demand was a thing), and I loved the characters in it so much that I had to give them some Pokemon!

Van and Folken - Since they are half Draconian, I think Dragon type Pokemon would suit them well, especially gentle-looking dragons like the Dragonite evolution line. Neither of the two brothers are grown up yet here, so I gave them Dratini and Dragonair.

Allen - Honestly, I just love that he has a pet owl, so I gave him more owls! Any excuse to draw more Hoothoots and Noctowls.

Merle, Naria, and Eriya - Three different kinds of Meowth for the three cat girls of the show! Side note: I like how different their ears are from the usual anime cat girl.

Dilandau - Giving him fire type dogs like Arcanine, its Hisuian variant, and Houndoom was an easy choice since he loves burning things and has a connection to dogs/dogmen.

Hitomi - I gave her two other Pokemon that can see glimpses of the future: Gothitelle and Xatu. Both of them have Pokedex entries suggesting that they sometimes experience distress from the visions they see, so Hitomi would be able to understand their pain in a way most others couldn't, and vice-versa.

She's done!! \^w^/ I feel like I put a good bit of love into this one, and it came out of nowhere! I remembered how when I was a kid, I saw Escaflowne figures being advertised by RightStuf on the back of my manga magazine, and that memory got me thinking about Dilandau. It wasn't until much later (just a couple years ago) that I finally watched this anime! Uh, hopefully whoever sees this isn't also watching the anime for the first time 20-30 years late, or else I might've spoiled something. Anyway, I had a surprisingly fun time doing all the little hatch marks on the black parts of the outfit! It reminded me of when I draw hair really detailed. I thought it might help the clothing look nice, since black watercolors have a tendency to come out splotchy for me.

Escaflowne Color Wheel Challenge

This was fun!

I had my doubts, especially with the poses and that it would turn out to be too boring.

But I think each character got something fun to do and isn’t restricted to its color area.

Folken is really hard to draw. Hitomi looks like a leprechaun 🍀

Allen is suspicious… and also Folkens vampire coat is blocking the view.

I always said You Higuri would have been the PERFECT mangaka to make an accurate manga adaptation of the sword and sorcery isekai classic anime Vision of Escaflowne. She excels at historical and cultural details as well as action scenes, and she's one of the notable mangaka who can make ethnically diverse shojo style character designs.

This image was shared by a member of the Vision of Escaflowne Facebook group, and unfortunately I don't have much context on when or why You Higuri made this art. Maybe it was her own fan art or part of some promotion for Escaflowne back in the 90s? If you know anything about this image I'd be eager to learn.
