Hi!! I know this is probably going to be the weirdest compliment ever but I have something called synesthesia which is where you hear music when you see art and colours and see colours and images when you listen to music and a lot of your art literally makes me hear/think about breakcore but more similar to artists like Deathbrain and Empty Blue. Beautiful work!
Oh my gosh I completely forgot I had an inbox... I have a lot of stuff piling up in there right now, thank you everyone for your patience in waiting for me to get around to them ^^;; That being said, this is one of the coolest asks I've ever gotten?!? I don't have synesthesia but it's always fascinated me, I think its such a neat thing, and it's even more exciting to hear about what my own art sounds like through those lens!!! Rest assured this was not a weird compliment at all, I've been smiling from ear to ear since I saw it. I only listened to a small selection from the two artists you mentioned in this just around feel for what their work was like, but I have plans to investigate further later for sure. Thanks so much for sharing this is awesome :^)
#honored you enjoy my work too! hopefully i can actually get some more posted soon..#not to jinx myself but im pretty sure ive been easing my way out of art block/frustration. taking it slow though#and sorry again for taking so long to get to this!#laika answers

Hey, could you please write Marvel men with a bf that likes to knit/crochet?
A/N: Here you go! Sorry this took so long I am trying my best to get back into the groove of things so hopefully I can post more stuff soon. Enjoy!
-
You Like to Knit and Crochet (Avengers x Male Reader)
BUCKY
Bucky wouldn't have much of a reaction to it but he would find it to be an interesting hobby to have. While Bucky wouldn't admit it out loud he really likes it when you make sweaters for him. The thought of you taking all that time and effort into making something for someone like him gives him a warm feeling in his chest. Whenever he is relaxing in the tower you can usually find him wearing one of the sweaters you made him. Eventually, you offered to teach Bucky how to knit and crochet. Bucky was actually able to pick it up quickly and while he doesn't do it in his free time he will sometimes join you whenever you are working on something.
STEVE
Steve was impressed by your knitting and crocheting skills especially since it seemed so time-consuming. He would generally accept anything you give him but Steve does tend to like your handmade sweaters and socks the most. He especially likes it when you add little designs to them but he will playfully roll his eyes if you add anything American flag-themed to them. Over time Steve would get curious enough and ask you if you wouldn't mind teaching him something. Steve would have a little bit of a struggle in the beginning but he would eventually get the hang of it. Steve would give you some knitted socks as a present and a thank you for the ones you made him.
THOR
Thor would think it was a nice hobby as some of it would remind him of how some people in Asgard would make their tapestries. One day Thor noticed you had made a crochet bee and was curious if you could make a snake for him. Thor loves it when you present him with another crocheted or knitted animal and he will make sure to show off your creation to the other Avengers. Thor was very honored when you offered to teach him how to knit and crochet. Despite Thor's enthusiasm to learn it was apparent that Thor wasn't that good at it as his creations tended to turn out lopsided and incomplete in places.
TONY
When Tony first heard about your hobby Tony made sure to add senior citizen jokes to his conversations with you. While Tony was appreciative of your gifts to him they didn't really fit his style. Usually, you can find the scarfs and hats you make for him on a couple of his suits in the lab. Despite his seemingly dismissive attitude about them, he does genuinely like them and if you really want to he will wear some of them on occasion. Tony turned down your offer to teach him multiple times but eventually you wore him down enough to give it a try. Tony after some time actually wasn't too bad at it but he would tell you it's not his thing plus it makes him feel old.
LOKI
Loki wouldn't react too much to the discovery but he would comment on your skill at doing such a task. When you first presented Loki with a scarf you made for him he was taken aback and didn't really know how to react to it besides a subdued thank you. Loki can be seen wearing the scarf from time to time which lets you know that he does appreciate the gift even if he would never say it out loud. Loki would be a little reluctant to try out knitting and crocheting but would decide to try it out at least once. After a little bit of time, Loki would actually get the hang of it pretty quickly but he wouldn't do it often since it doesn't interest him that much.
BRUCE
Bruce would be a little curious about your hobby and would ask you some small questions about it from time to time. Bruce tends to appreciate anything that you give him but the one gift you gave him that he holds close to his heart is a blanket you made for him. When he first saw it he was taken aback by it and gave you a genuine thank you for the gift. Bruce will usually bring the cover out for the two of you to lie under whenever you watch TV together. Bruce would actually be the first one to ask about you teaching him and while he may not be the best he does get a pretty decent grasp at it. The two of you will sometimes knit and crochet together to relax.

My dearest folks and wanderers, who come around…
Currently I’m overwhelmed of how much love and reactions I get in here 🥰 Thank you all so much! I‘m sending big Wrecker hugs to all of you 🤩✨🙏 Before I return full force to drawing Star Wars fanart, have a rare original artwork of mine – my current awake internal processing dragon ✨🐉
Somewhere it is told that those clumsy, precious-hoarding and -staring lizards, feigning intelligence for big effect, should bring luck allegedly 😂🤷🏽♀️ I‘m not sure about that, but the scale hatching pattern looks nice and was dopamining for me to draw, so yeah 🤩✨
Announcements and statements
have a caf for those ☺️☕️🫶
Things happened and things may happen and I‘m always open for messages, no matter if request, feedback or deep talk – be sure it’ll be with an open ear, respect and caf vibe 😀☕️ I‘m serious with important things, but I‘m not willing to discuss important things emotionally loaded. Agitated hearts aren‘t wise, only agitated – so I won‘t accept quarrel invitations 😂 This is the way 🤷🏽♀️
Holidays were weird 🤯 I got sick, I got unsettled, I did my first fanfiction-y writing (wtf? I write?) and my developing artstyle decided to unsettle me additionally, confusing my WIP and a genuinely asking feeling what for Maker’s sake is actually happening ❤️🩹
So with all my current whatevers I got inspired to do some more clarifications 🙏✨
What is that Chaos Squad thing?
For those who don’t know – don’t get confused, the „Chaos Squad“ is working on a definition and is in it’s finding phase 😂 As I see this, we‘re fun chaotic artists / writers / else collab group and want people to enjoy fun and inspiring-each-other-into-creating escalations with us in the Star Wars fandom 🤩🫶✨
I can only speak for myself, but like some others of us, I play with my Star Wars OCs and the art-, reblog- or comment-chaos gets OC „flavoured“. But I’m not a roleplayer 😀 I stay artist Eobe and use for Chaos Squad activities my OCs mainly to give myself an art- and scene-fitting face insert in our together creations! ☺️ Feel yourself always invited to reach out if you want to ask something! ☕️
This is an artblog and it stays an artblog ✍️ my focus is doing art, collabs and interactions mainly in the Star Wars universe, but I love to do art and crossovers with other fandoms if I like 🤩✨… or some more original art, if I manage to get over my actual shyness 😗
Eobe entering AO3
sounds like a threat 😂 I‘m almost sure I would even do threats not without offering a caf ☕️ what am I hihihi
I’m on AO3 now and dragon is my pfp in AO3!
Gorgeous @eclec-tech 🫶 lured me back to AO3 as co-creator for continuing „The Spicy Fox“ story ☕️🦊! Check it out, the new chapter is so much fun to read and I love to have the honor to accompany it with my artworks – a new one freshly added at the end of the chapter, already showing some progress in my artstyle (if my eyes aren’t jinxed like everything else seems to be currently 😱)! The artwork will get its own posting of course, but I wanted to opt in back to you all with dragon 🐉✨
As I also absolutely unforeseen managed to write a „thing“ despite blockades – my unintroduced clone OC took over when I was massively unsettled and started his Matrix / Undercover coded loner mission against the inhibitor chips, knowing way too much… I think I call it „The Source Code“ 👀✨ and I‘m very tempted to deliver you the continuation that already roughs my brain (some were also asking for it 🙈 thank you so much)!
So long story short (what a joke actually!? 😂)
There will be more art again soon hopefully (and maybe even those writings? Whatever maintenance is currently happening in my head 😂)
I‘m absolutely looking forward ☝️🤩✨

Decided to answer all the asks from this post. Full list of what I read this year coming soon.
How many books did you read this year?
125.
Did you reread anything? What?
Yes. 17 of the 125 were re-reads. Most were from series I haven't reread in many years (like Wheel of Time and Green Rider).
What were your top five books of the year?
Oh god it's hard to pick just 5 out of 125, especially when your preferred genre(s) tend to come in series. But, in no particular order:
The Outside by Ada Hoffmann
Unseelie by Ivelisse Housman
Even Though I Knew The End by C.L. Polk
Late Bloomer by Mazey Eddings
A Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon
Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
Finally got around to reading some of N.K. Jemisin's work, and I completely understand the hype. I look forward to reading more from her next year.
What genre did you read the most of?
Unsurprisingly, fantasy. The two tracking apps I use have different numbers - Storygraph has me at 76, while Fable has me at 94 - but either way, there's no question fantasy is my most-read genre.
Second place goes to science fiction, at 32/45. I'm actually quite new to the genre (in literature at least), but I've been enjoying it immensely so far.
Honorable mention to the LGBTQIA+ category. The majority of my reading choices, across genres, feature queer characters or themes (predominantly WLW or a-spec).
Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to?
Nothing in particular, though there are a few books that have been on my shelves for years which I need to get around to at some point.
What was your average Goodreads rating? Does it seem accurate?
I don't use Goodreads, and I dislike rating/reviewing books. However, I do have an average star rating of 3.9 out of 5 on Fable. Which tracks.
Did you meet any of your reading goals? Which ones?
I kept exceeding my yearly goal - I started low, since I only read 30 books last year, and had to keep raising the bar every few months. I struggled a bit at the end to get to 125, thanks to a hyperfixation pulling me toward fanfiction, but I just managed to get there.
I also took part in several reading challenges on Storygraph, mostly during the spring and summer.
Did you get into any new genres?
Thanks to aforementioned reading challenges, I dabbled in poetry, literary fiction, and horror for the first time. Not sure I would say I "got into" them, per se, but I'm not opposed to further dabbling.
I loved historical fiction as a kid, but haven't touched the genre much as an adult. I finally found a few I enjoyed this year (all queer, and some blended with fantasy elements), so hopefully I can find more next year.
What was your favorite new release of the year?
I already put Late Bloomer on the overall top 5 list, so I'll mention The Stars Too Fondly by Emily Hamilton here. It's sci-fi mixed with cheesy rom-com, and it was a really fun read.
What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?
I guess I'll go with The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin - and its sequels, since I read them all in rapid succession and so they're blurred together in my head. This was my introduction to her work, and I'm glad I took the plunge. Jemisin's storytelling and worldbuilding is phenomenal.
Any books that disappointed you?
Not sure it was disappointment, exactly, since I also struggled to connect with Harrow the Ninth, but I really had a difficult time getting through Tamsyn Muir's Nona the Ninth. I enjoyed the first book in the series, but the sequels have not really been my cup of tea, with Nona being my least favorite so far. I appreciate how important Muir's writing is to the community, but it just isn't for me.
What were your least favorite books of the year?
I didn't hate any of the books I finished, but I suppose there were a few I liked less than the others. Nona the Ninth was one. Some others were We Free the Stars by Hafsah Faizal, Your Driver is Waiting by Priya Guns, and What I Mean When I Say I'm Autistic by Annie Kotowicz.
What books do you want to finish before the year is over?
None. At this point, I'm saving any current reads for my 2025 count.
Did you read any books that were nominated for or won awards this year (Booker, Women’s Prize, National Book Award, Pulitzer, Hugo, etc.)? What did you think of them?
Yes. The Mimicking of Known Successes by Malka Older was nominated for a Hugo award in 2024. It's a brilliant sci-fi/mystery novella featuring queer main characters - so, naturally, right up my alley.
What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?
Anything by Hafsah Faizal seems to be trendy on social media, but I especially kept seeing A Tempest of Tea everywhere. It was a perfectly fine fantasy heist book, though I found the (straight) romances uncompelling.
I also don't love This Is How You Lose The Time War (by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone) nearly as much as other people seem to. It's very unique and very queer, and it was okay for me, but I probably wouldn't read it again.
Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
I wasn't expecting to like The Deep by Rivers Solomon, et al., as much as I did. It's a beautiful piece of speculative fiction that examines pain and trauma and memory - and there's a queer romance in here to boot.
How many books did you buy?
Somewhere around 20, give or take.
Did you use your library?
Not my local library, no. I did, however, sign up for a card from the Queer Liberation Library on the Libby app.
What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?
I wasn't waiting on any new releases this year - except maybe for Brandon Sanderson's Wind and Truth, which came out this month but I haven't read yet.
Did you participate in or watch any booklr, booktube, or book twitter drama?
Absolutely not.
What’s the longest book you read?
That'll be Brandon Sanderson's Rhythm of War, at just over 1200 pages. The other book to (barely) crack 1000 was The Shadow Rising by Robert Jordan.
Out of 125 books, 22 were 500+ pages, and 65 were between 300-499 pages. This is what happens when you're a fantasy/sci-fi fan; you tend to end up with longer books.
What’s the fastest time it took you to read a book?
I read a few of the shorter books/novellas in one day. I remember getting through The Deep in one sitting, for example.
I'm a fast reader, but I also have ADHD, so most of the time my focus is split between multiple books. Sometimes I like a book well enough to get through it in a week or less, and sometimes it takes a few months. That's why my average read time (according to Storygraph) is 25 days.
Did you DNF anything? Why?
Yup. Not too many, though. Most were free ebooks I tried but couldn't get into. I tried to reread Pride and Prejudice, since my sister gifted me a beautiful edition, but I didn't like Jane Austen's work in high school, and I don't now, so I gave up on that pretty quickly. It looks gorgeous on my shelf, though.
What reading goals do you have for next year?
Not much of a goal-setter, tbh. I'll probably set a basic goal of 100 books for next year, and see how it goes. I've joined a couple of Storygraph challenges, to give my ADHD some additional motivation. And I plan to continue rereading a few older series, however slowly.
#gw.all#gw.text#gw.replies#time for the end of year roundups#and once again my autistic ass fills out the entire ask meme#since i know no one#but these are interesting to look back at later

hellooo i saw this tiktok video and was wondering if you can please do this for shoto kaminari and bakugou
https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSJkeaV68/
‘i got a big fat 😳🎂’
character(s) : todoroki shouto, kaminari denki, bakugou katsuki (bnha)
legend : [Y/N = your name] they/them pronouns used, quirk not mentioned
headcanon type : fluff, crack (x reader)
note(s) : LMAO ANON YOU LITERALLY READ MY MIND?? I WAS GOING TO DO THIS EVEN WITHOUT A REQUEST— great to know that i have the same thinking process with you 🤩
»»————- ♡ ————-««

todoroki shouto
noooow
you know shouto’s always willing to do tiktok challenges with you— he might be clueless when it came to social media (because of end**vor)
but! he’s gotten used to your antics most of them anyway
but he’s sort of confused when you show him a video of a couple uh.. walking?? he can’t tell what they’re doing exactly
“what,, are they doing?” is what he asked when you showed him the tiktok, brows furrowed in confusion
“they’re uh.. kekeing how do i explain it— nevermind that! just do whatever i do, shouto!”
he’s still confused as hell 🧍♀️ but he decides to not ask any questions, and push through with it, just by seeing the excited look on your face
and the audio 😳 i mean, it’s not,, wrong. to him, your cake is some fine ass cake :))
you lead him out of the frame, and you hit play— not giving shouto time to ‘rehearse’
it might seem to be that shouto has no reaction to the audio, but if you look closely— the corners of his lips are tugged upwards slightly
and he follows your every command, when you gesture for him to copy you.
now, shouto’s got the dance steps down, but man’s terribly stiff 😭 he also kept looking at you (specifically your ass) to see if he was doing things correctly
afterwards, the two of you take a look at the video. and, he asks you if the tiktok needs to be filmed once again by your silent reaction
but he’s appalled when he sees you literally driven to tears from pure, unfiltered laughter
you assure him with a kiss that you’re fine, and insist that the tiktok is fine as you upload it— and you cuddle with shouto for the rest of the day, letting the tiktok marinate
the next day comes by, and tiktok BLEW UP. like.. blew up, really. they should be honored that they’ve witnessed shouto strut to nicki minaj
the comments being well, absolutely hilarious. you could read through the comments again and again, and not be bored
“mann your boyfriend 😭 he’s staring too hard” “YUHH GET IT, I GUESS” “go hot couple go ‼️”
needless to say, he didn’t hear the end of the conversation when bakugou found out about the tiktok

kaminari denki
if denki had a list of tiktok challenges he desperately wanted to do at some point in his life,
this would be in the top 3, for sure
so, luck seemed to be on his side when you approached him first— wanting to rope him in on another tiktok you wanted to do with him
hopefully one that doesn’t center him as the poor unfortunate victim
“you wanna do another tiktok?” he beams when you nod, and when you show him what the prank is— he’s excited!!
you can clearly tell that it didn’t take that much convincing
the blond’s also thankful that it’s not another tiktok that needs him to ask bakugou if he can say pegasus but without the pega 💀
“alright! tell me when we can do it,”
“right now.”
so here he is, standing beside you, as you set up your phone— absolutely confident on what he’s going to do
the tiktok starts running, and denki might’ve underestimated his eagerness, when the camera captures his eager expression 💀
there was no jumpscare warning
and you didn’t even have to say ‘c’mon‼️’ for him to follow your movements. as soon as you turned your back, he started moving along with you, and the music.
he was watching your movements, and he tried copying them to the best of his sloppy, hyper and exaggerated abilities
denki was so excited about being in the tiktok, to the point he literally crashed behind you— making the both of you tumble to the floor, laughing
and the tiktok’s results are pretty much unknown to him— minus the fact that you laughed HARDER when you re-watched the tiktok
“can i see?” he asks eagerly, but you swiftly reject— shoving his head away from your screen with a hand.
he pouts when you say “the results are a surprise!” a bummer, but he chooses to trust you, and the rest of the day is spent on the floor in pure enjoyment
you upload the tiktok and slowly but surely, it attracts people’s attention
because of denki’s eagerness— he,, did a fantastic job with the walk! you can even say that he did better than you, minus the not so graceful fall
even the comments agree with you “MAN HIS CAKE IS THANGING‼️” “he did awfully well omg 💀” “oh to have this relationship’s energy 😔 when can i find a dude like that?”
and when denki finally sees the tiktok’s results, he’s left in tears from laughing— reduced into wheezes
DANK-i : BABE WHDJWKDKE THE TIKTOK YOU JUST POSTED— 😭💀💀 IM IN TEARS
safe to say, his wish has been fulfilled, and he can pass away at any given moment, satisfied.

bakugou katsuki
bakugou katsuki will never admit that he does enjoy doing tiktoks with you
plot twist : he enjoys it a lot more than he expects
but he knows where the draw the line, and the line was at the new tiktok you’ve showed to him
“no.”
“but—”
“fuck no— if you wanted to twerk infront of a camera, go ahead by all means, just don’t rope me into it.”
he does have his reasons. one— the bakusquad will make fun of him, and two— if the tiktok were to blow up,, he wouldn’t live it down.
and it always does— he knows that tiktoks do particularly well if he makes an appearance.
“if i didn’t post it, would you do it with me?”
but katsuki seemed to be fine with that. with a roll of the eyes, he sighs— looking at the tiktok once again. he gets up from his seat when the tiktok’s over
“let’s do this fucking thing.” he says with determination, even though no one was going to see the tiktok anyway or so he thinks
the tiktok’s video timer starts counting down, giving the both of you guys ample time to get into position
a smirk couldn’t be held back when you state that “i have a big phat 🎂” it’s anything but lies, and it would be the only time katsuki would smile on camera
you go forward, and you gesture for him to follow on beat— with a focused glare, katsuki starts strutting with you like no one’s business
it’s at a slow pace, and people would’ve guessed that he had a stick up his ass, sure— but damn‼️ he has those moves.
and before the video actually ends, he’s seen turning around with a glare— to see if the camera’s not filming it’s still running, and the camera captures his expression
“not bad.” he can’t help but smirk at the results, when you replay the video “i’m referring to the both of us. and, didn’t know you could move like that.”
“katsuki, your pace was like a grandfather’s—”
“shut the hell up!”
but little did katsuki know, when he wasn’t looking, you published the tiktok online, for everyone to view (basically, 3M people have seen him strut to nicki minaj)
the comments were having a blast “we’ll disregard the pace, buT DAMN‼️WHERE DID HE GET THOSE MOVES?” “LOL HIS FACE AT THE END WAS LIKE👹🤨” “y’all catch that at the beginning? woooh he’s lovesick.”
when you woke up the next morning— you can hear the boom of his quirk outside of your room, and you can practically hear his not so happy voice
fly high 😔🕊 you will be missed

Defy Your Authority: Chapter 1
Read on AO3. Part 2 here.
Summary: You’re a Lieutenant, stationed on Orinda. You’re content with your trustworthy crew, but issues with a certain ship (spoiler alert: it’s the TIE silencer) end up trapping you on the Steadfast, instead. Your relationship with Kylo Ren isn't how you left it. How many more messes can you stand to clean?
(Yes, this is the sequel to Fix Your Attitude.)
Words: 4500
Warnings: None. Yet.
Characters: Kylo Ren x Reader
A/N: Umm... hi!! I don't have much to say other than I'm very excited to post this, and I really hope you enjoy it! I love you all so much. I'm genuinely lucky and grateful to have you in my life.
You weren’t ready.
Since the alert had come in that the First Order would be sending a transporter to Orinda, your hands had been jittery. There’d been no indication, no hint as to what your team should be expecting when they arrived. In the four months since you’d arrived at the fuel post, you hadn’t received a single visitor from the brass.
“Hey, Chief.”
The voice called you as you were chest-deep in a pile of fuel-cells. Grunting, you wrenched yourself free, patting the reactor dust from your uniform. Certainly there was some in your hair, too.
“Hey, hi Tonis, what’s up?” You tried to restrain your anxiety to the perimeter of your mind. “Can, uh, can I help you?”
Tonis, your third engineer, sighed, wrangling his hands together as he looked to the ground. “Do you know what’s going on with this transport unit arriving?” His thin lips twisted in a frown. “They’re saying that they might be shutting the post down.”
“Oh, jeez.” You shook your head, grabbing a rag from the terminal and wiping your hands. “No, no. Nothing like that. I’m sure.”
“Okay,” he said. “Good. I really, really, really don’t want to be moved. Again.”
Grimacing, you looked at your reflection in the terminal facade. “I know.”
“Orinda’s really great,” he said. “All the different ships we get to work on. And it’s so quiet. And our team is so great--”
“I know.” You mussed your hair, as if shoving dirty fingers through it would improve its appearance. Incredibly, it did not. “They’re only sending three people. I’m sure it can’t be that big of a deal.”
“But that’s the thing!” he said. “Don’t you think that a transport unit with only a few passengers must be here for something super-official?”
Your chest seized, and you cleared your throat, turning back to him.
“Maybe.” You ignored the hot burn of your cheeks. “Guess we’ll see when they get here.”
The terminal blipped, a familiar pattern that indicated the atmosphere had been breached. It’d been awhile since you’d felt like you had the power to summon anything of importance with a single thought. The reminder tweaked your heart.
“Or… I guess we’ll see now.”
Tonis squealed, running through the post. “Hey! Hey guys! The First Order’s here! The First Order’s arrived!”
Sighing, you looked into the terminal again. Four months hadn’t changed your appearance too much. Not that it mattered. Or it might. But you wouldn’t worry about it. Only a little.
You steeled your nerves and walked out of the hangar into the dusty outcropping of the fuel outpost. Flat land stretched for miles in diameter from your station, a rolling pitch of blue mountains in the far distance, the wind whipping across the plains, rustling the dry grass. Shielding your eyes with a hand, you gazed up and spotted the transporter, a blooming black spot in the cloudless sky, quickening the pace of your pulse with every passing second.
It was just a transporter. He wouldn’t be on it. There was nothing to freak out about.
Tonis had gathered the rest of your massive crew--all three of them, him included--and they surrounded you, faces taut with anticipation.
“What do you think it is, Chief?” That was Mirna, your second engineer, a short, wide-set thing, with buzzed hair and a gruff voice. “You think they’re shutting the place down?”
“She already said she doesn’t think it’s that,” Tonis replied.
“Well, yeah, but then, why are they just sending three people?” said Lin, your mechanic.
“There’s plenty of reasons they could send three people,” Tonis said, as if he hadn’t just been agonizing over that very issue just minutes ago.
Mirna snorted. “Like what?”
“An announcement,” Lin said. “Maybe they’re canvassing all First Order planets.”
You nodded, chewing your cheek. “Sure. That could be it.”
“Or maybe it’s a survey!” Tonis was almost wiggling with excitement like the little nerd he was. “Does anyone else love filling out those weird surveys?”
“No, nerfherder,” Mirna teased, grinning. “Just you.”
“Could be an escort.” Lin shrugged. “Maybe they’re here to pick someone up.”
Mirna laughed. “Oh, come on,” she said. “Who in the stars could they have an interest in on this planet?”
Blood blazed your face. “It’s a mystery.”
You hadn’t told anyone since arriving what had brought you there or why you’d come. You hadn’t told them when you’d first landed that you still had the cum of the Commander of the First Order leaking out of your cunt. You hadn’t told them that just hours before, he’d held you in his arms, brought you into his mind, and shown you--with a breathless, crushing tangibility--how utterly and completely he loved you.
You hadn’t told them, either, that in the days, weeks, months following your arrival, you hadn’t heard from him at all.
With a dying wail, the transporter hovered and landed, spitting up a ring of dust that smacked you in the face. You sputtered, wiping your eyes, the rest of your crew apparently victims too. Frowning, you crossed your arms, brow cocked as the ramp whined and descended. Something akin to fear needled your heart in the empty space between the sound of footsteps and the emergence of two Stormtroopers stomping to the ground.
Something that was definitely fear gripped it as those two troopers were followed by a man you’d hoped to never, ever see again.
“Engineer.” General Hux had somehow lost none of his smarmy, pink-cheeked smugness--his refusal to say your name was out of petty spite at this point. And his face was just as punchable as you remembered. “I see you are, for once, prepared for our arrival.”
“What sort of facility chief would I be if I didn’t stay on top of our arrival queues?” You hid your hands behind your back to hide their quaking. “Though I believe my rank is Lieutenant, now, sir.”
“Lieutenant,” he replied, with the same amount of disdain he’d probably afford a crying child. “I imagine it’s the lack of distraction.” He smirked. “I loathe to think of the productivity you would’ve had on the Finalizer with a similar environment.”
“Oh, as do I, sir.” You offered him a gleaming smile. “I can’t imagine a punishment worse than being in your good graces.”
“Chief,” hissed Mirna. “That’s a General of the First Order. What are you doing?”
Cursing internally, you pinched yourself, stood straighter. Your team would have no idea why you felt so comfortable mouthing off to a man who, otherwise, might’ve had you thrust into the bowels of space by now--and to be honest, you didn’t have much of an idea why at this point, either. Your presumed protection was hardly a current presence in your life.
You shook your head, wagged out your hands. “Let me try again, sir.” Clearing your throat, you continued, “General Hux, sir. To what do I owe the honor?”
Hux smirked. “As much as I hate to interrupt, Lieutenant,” he said, continuing to let the word drip with more venom than a snake ever could, “I’m here to order you to come with me onto the Steadfast.”
“The Steadfast?” Obviously the name of a ship, but not one you were familiar with. No news bulletins had made their way to Orinda in the time you’d been stationed. “Why?”
“The Supreme Leader’s TIE fighter has ceased functioning. Every engineer we’ve brought to it has failed to diagnose the issue.” His jaw tensed in real, actual reluctance. “We were at the border of the Rim, and unfortunately, I thought of you.”
You blinked. He wanted you to work on Snoke’s TIE fighter?
And then another question: Snoke had a TIE fighter?
“Uh…” Frowning, you glanced around at your crew. You couldn’t stand the thought of leaving them for days on end. “How long will I be gone?”
His face betrayed nothing but pure disgust. “As long as it takes you to fix a TIE fighter.” He watched as you paused in thought. “I wasn’t offering you a choice, Lieutenant. We’re leaving now.”
With that, he turned on his heels, marching up the ramp. A long, slow breath left your lungs, and you turned to your team, scanning their faces for any reaction. To your surprise, everyone but Tonis seemed rapt in excitement, eyes wide and chins wagging in awe.
“I had no idea you were such a big shot!” Lin grinned. The other two nodded in agreement.
Blushing, you rubbed your arm in embarrassment, looking between them. “No, no,” you said. “Nothing like that.”
“You have to tell us the story, one day.” Mirna was smirking.
“Uh… Right.” You coughed. “So, hopefully I’ll only be a day or so, max,” you said. “Mirna, you’re in charge while I’m gone.”
“You got it, Chief,” she said. “Tonis, my first order is for you to please calm down.”
He shot her a glare. “Good luck, Chief!” He offered you a salute, which was both strange and unnecessary. “We’ll be thinking of you!”
Warmth spread in your chest. “I’ll be thinking of you guys, too. Don’t make too big of a mess, okay?”
“Yes ma’am!” they replied in unison--and then broke into laughter.
You shook your head, finding yourself laughing with them. “Okay. See you guys soon.”
Bowing your head, you trudged up the ramp into the transporter, taking a seat far away from Hux and the two Stormtroopers. You wondered why he’d bothered to bring them to a tiny outpost like Orinda, but you supposed that self-importance and paranoia knew no bounds in the higher ranks of the First Order.
As the door closed to the transporter, your heart wrinkled. In the past few months, despite your open ache, Orinda had become your home, your crew had become something akin to your family. You hoped the issue with the TIE fighter was something stupid, like a busted hyperdrive. They were simple to repair, but most engineers wouldn’t mess with lightspeed travel--the mechanisms were so delicate that even a simple mistake could result in splitting the ship.
The transporter rose into the air, and in seconds, it burst into the sky. A windowless cargo meant you could only imagine the faces of your crew as you disappeared into the horizon. You sighed, watching your feet as they jostled with the jerking of the ship. You weren’t sure what the Steadfast was like, but apparently Snoke had moved his operations there. Though you still had no clue what Snoke looked like, you’d never imagined him to be the type to fly--but perhaps a Supreme Leader required multiple skillsets.
The awkward ride finished without a single word being exchanged between you and Hux, which was fine by you, and possibly finer by him. When the ramp lowered, he speared you with his gaze, waiting for the troopers to exit before standing and ordering you to follow him with only his eyes.
You tromped down the ramp into the hangar on the Steadfast--it looked almost identical to the one on the Finalizer. The ceilings stretched high, like a giant’s mouth, the magnetic shields glowing teeth at the lips of the bay. Ships buzzed above you, racing in and out of their docks, the floor crowded with soldiers and officers alike.
The rush hit you--sure, the time on Orinda had been fantastic, engaging, rejuvenating. But it would never match the thrill of working in the presence of fleets and fleets of warships, surrounded by the heady spell of urgent, prestigious labor. You sucked it through your nose, held it in your chest, unable to stop your eyes from lingering on every busted ship they saw. In the distance, a team huddled around the smoking wing of a TIE fighter--you bit your lip to prevent yourself from racing over, from tearing it apart for them.
Another thing you weren’t able to stop looking for was any hint, any presence of the Commander--but in the bay, you didn’t even catch evidence of the Command Shuttle. It was a huge assumption to guess he’d be on the Steadfast to begin with, but part of you hoped he’d trailed his precious Supreme Leader to any place he was ordered. It figured that the one time you might have been within thinking distance, he’d managed to make himself scarce.
Another twine in your heart snapped, joining the collection that’d been unfurling since you’d departed the Finalizer.
Yes, he’d said he would find you. You still believed him now, even.
But really. What was taking him so damn long?
Hux led you to a wide dock toward the very front of the hangar. The crews you spotted along the way seemed detached, working without words, communicating with gestures and mirthless expressions. Tonis’ silly salute would never happen here. You frowned. The lack of thrill was worth your autonomy.
“Lieutenant.”
A snap of your head, and you blinked. You were in front of your charge.
This TIE fighter was unlike one you’d ever seen. Instead of the flat panel wings, this one bore talons, sharp knives capable of cutting space and possibly any ship in its way. Red-paned transparisteel formed the cockpit into a muzzle, imitating an animal instead of a sphere. And it wasn’t a ball suspended on plates, but was rather tucked tight into the body of the ship, creating a seamless, dynamic transition that to you, seemed so new, so modern. It was almost--sexy?
You looked to Hux. “Are you sure this is the one that isn’t working?” Lips parted in awe, you stepped up to it, placing a hand on the solar array. “It’s gorgeous.”
“The Supreme Leader has been unable to fly it for cycles, now,” said Hux. “I’m sure.”
“All right.” You rolled your eyes. “Got it.”
What you needed was a post-flight report. You strode over to the nearest terminal and entered your credentials--thankfully, as a Lieutenant now, they were universal to the entire First Order system. Only one ship was logged underneath the access: TIE/vn space superiority fighter: SILENCER.
“TIE silencer?” you mumbled. “Where do they come up with these names?”
You investigated the reports in the past several cycles that detailed the attempts by engineers to get the thing working: thrusters aligned, check. Solar lines flushed, check. Refuel port cleansed, check. Heat calibration reset and replaced, check.
And yet with each new repair--engine test: fail.
Engine test: fail.
Engine test: fail, fail, fail.
Screwing your lips in thought, you landed on the post-flight report, hoping it would provide you with insight. If he knew what was good for him, Supreme Leader Snoke would be thorough.
You opened the report, and paragraphs of information flooded the screen. Your jaw dropped. Every single system had been left with a meticulously in-depth account of its status before, during, and after flight. The level of specificity contained within each sentence astounded you. It was almost unbelievable that a single person could remember this much, let alone regurgitate it with any level of accuracy. You groaned, lost in Basic.
Hux cleared his throat. “How long do you anticipate this taking, Lieutenant?”
“As long as I--...” You stopped yourself with a grumble. It would be much easier to hear it from the tauntaun’s mouth, instead of pouring over and cross-checking every single detail. “I’m not sure, General. Is there any way I could speak with the Supreme Leader?”
A strange, smug look passed over his face. “Certainly,” he replied. “I’ll take you.”
You blinked. That was easy. Almost too easy. “Uh… okay.”
Hux turned on his heel, clipped stride cutting through the hangar. You hadn’t been prepared to meet the Supreme Leader when you woke up this morning, but you supposed anything was possible when working for the First Order. Swallowing, you shut down the terminal, and followed him into the halls.
Returning to a Star Destroyer, in a way, felt like home--the glossy black tile passed like a familiar path beneath your feet, and you spared fleeting glances to the Stormtroopers who passed you. The halls of the Steadfast maintained their similarity to everything else on the Finalizer--though that did nothing to assuage your anxiety about the memories you’d had on that ship. Or who may or may not be on this one.
“Do you work on the Steadfast, now, sir?”
Hux was silent for a moment, gaze trained forward. “Yes. The Finalizer was decommissioned.”
“Wait, really?” Your heart thumped. The only datapad message you’d received from your friends had come in the first few weeks after your departure. You just assumed they’d been busy. “What happened?”
“A Resistance attack left it crippled,” he replied. “Leadership and surviving crew were transferred to the Steadfast.”
Terror seized you, your pace quickened. “Sur-surviving crew?” you asked. “Sir?” More silence. You stumbled to catch up with him, fighting the tremor in your voice. “Sir--”
“Engineers Foster and Loren were transferred to this vessel unharmed, Lieutenant.” He leered at you. “Satisfied?”
You heaved a massive sigh, hands falling to your knees. They were here. You’d have to catch up with them, soon.
“Yes, sir, thank you--”
By the time you’d finished, he’d already managed to make it what seemed to be fifty paces ahead of you, and you scrambled to keep up with him.
As you did, a grey-haired man emerged from the corner in front of you both, and Hux stiffened, cursing under his breath. Raising a brow, you tried to meet this man’s gaze, only to bump into the general, who’d stopped, limbs pinned to his sides.
“Shit!” Your face burned, and you jumped back, snapping to attention. “I mean, uh, sorry, General, sir.”
The look Hux offered you was similar to one a parent might offer a simpering child. Right before they murdered that child in a fit of blind rage.
“General Hux,” said the grey-haired man. “Just the one I was looking for.”
“Allegiant General Pryde.” Hux’s chin jutted to the ceiling.
The Allegiant General Pryde turned his attention to you, glimpsing your uniform before meeting your eyes. “I’m afraid we’re not acquainted, Lieutenant…”
You gave your name. “Sir.” Clearing your throat, you continued, “I’m Chief of Operations on Orinda.”
“Ah.” His gaze lingered on the fuel cell filth smattering your chest. “Of course.” Something within his eyes categorized you in league with rodents--and something else within them told you he crushed rodents for sport. “Interesting.” His attention whipped back to Hux. “General. Regarding the Council meeting…”
“I plan to present the Supreme Leader with my plan, sir.”
“I know you do,” Pryde replied, “but you failed to run it by me.”
Hux’s jaw tensed. You wished you were anywhere other than this extremely awkward hallway meeting that had absolutely nothing to do with you.
“Forgive me, Allegiant General,” Hux said, “but I didn’t think a basic unit efficiency research required your approval.”
“Everything requires my approval, General,” he said. “Lest we forget the errors of Starkiller Base.”
That was a low blow. You gulped. They both looked at you, and you cleared your throat again, throwing your hands behind your back. The energy radiating from Hux could be classified as skin-scorching.
“Of course.” Hux’s tone grew tighter with each word that left his lips. “I’ll remember that next time, sir.”
“Good.” Pryde glanced between you. “What brings a facility chief from her station all the way to the Steadfast?”
“The Supreme Leader’s TIE fighter, sir,” Hux replied, still staring into the air. “She may be the only engineer capable of repairing it.”
The Allegiant General frowned. “Really. How many resources did you expend picking up a single person from a remote outpost?” he asked. “Do you not consider this to be something I should know?”
“It was a brief excursion,” he said. “I took two Stormtroopers and a single transport unit.”
“Was that unit’s excursion approved?” He circled Hux, a silvered predator, sizing up his prey. For once, you almost felt bad for the ginger bastard. “What if Resistance staged an attack while you were gone? If we needed that unit for more than a handful of bodies?”
Hux’s lips pursed, chin dimpling with tension. “I don’t know, sir.”
“And how do you think the Supreme Leader will feel knowing you acted without approval, all to retrieve a single engineer?”
Silence drifted like fog over the three of you, thickening as this grey-haired power-laden dickhead glared at General Hux. But Hux’s back had aligned, parallel to the wall, every flicker of frustration fled from his frame. The tiniest hint of a smirk curled at his mouth.
“I think he’ll be just fine with it. Sir.” Hux’s brow quirked. “We’re on our way to speak with him now, if you’d like to accompany.”
Pryde grinned, a serpent’s twist to his smile. “Your confidence has failed you in the past, General,” he replied. “Lead the way.”
You trailed behind the Allegiant General and Hux, fingers starting to quake. Now, you’d not only be meeting the Supreme Leader still smothered in space dust, you’d be meeting him accompanied by the two biggest assholes in the First Order--second only to one other, perhaps.
Unfortunately, that particular asshole was a ghost to this ship, and there wasn’t anyone in particular you felt comfortable asking about him. If Hux had been superceded by this new jerk, the last thing you wanted was another opportunity for someone with rank greater than your own to question you about your personal relationships.
Dread pooled in your belly. Supreme Leader Snoke did know about your personal relationship with the Commander. In fact, Snoke had been the one to insist you be his conduit, among other insulting things. You imagined him bringing it up: Ah, yes, the engineer, the distraction… and how have you been, without his cock inside of you?
You shook your head. No, it didn’t make sense for him to bring up his apprentice’s dick at your first meeting. Or any meeting, for that matter. You hoped.
The two men led you through the rest of the journey in silence, animosity prickling like durasteel barbs in the air between them. At least your own team didn’t regard you with vibrodaggers behind their backs--as far as you knew, anyway--and the realization, against the backdrop of your current situation, had you aching to leave. The discussion with the Supreme Leader would be swift and succinct; you’d get the information you needed, diagnose the problem, and be on your way back to Orinda.
In front of you, a massive turbolift sang its arrival, blast door whirring open. You followed the two men inside, heart tingling. Maybe part of you had been hoping that your long-awaited reunion would have occurred during your time aboard--as you thought it, you tried to stymie the resentment that you’d waited this long at all. The rational part of your mind reasoned that he was a busy man, that lack of contact didn’t indicate lack of thought.
But every other part of your mind was staving off bubbling despair. Four months had felt like four years, and you’d only grown more desperate, more anxious for his embrace--then furious that he didn’t appear to return the sentiment.
You knew how he felt. So it didn’t make sense, then, why he hadn’t acted on it for even a single, solitary night in the past sixteen weeks.
When the blast door opened, you crossed the threshold into an obsidian sanctuary. The floor gleamed, a black lake of glass sweeping into high ebony ceilings that twinkled with artificial stars. The only other illumination came from two enormous spheres that hung, suspended in air at opposite ends of the room, their surfaces a swirl of white-grey light, imitation suns with colorless coronas. At the far end of the room was a hovering stone throne, six dark figures crowding it in a crescent.
Your heart stammered--you’d seen them before. In memories that hadn’t belonged to you. All of them were outfitted in clothing that seemed familiar, helmets that hid their identities, and each of them possessed a weapon meant explicitly for assassination. The only conclusion you could draw was that they were the Supreme Leader’s bodyguards.
Whoever they were, to you, they were ominous.
The two men in front of you strode forward, and you followed, catching your reflection whispering by your shoes: your hair was mussed with evidence of engine exhaust, your uniform still glowing with smears of ionization. Internally, you cursed yourself. Yeah, this was exactly how you’d wanted to look when meeting the Supreme Leader of the First Order--like complete shit. Stomach sinking, you sidled behind them as they stood at attention.
“Supreme Leader,” they said simultaneously.
As if on command, the wall of shadowed soldiers parted to reveal the throne.
But no one was there.
You blinked. “Oh.”
Hux’s head swiveled between the strangers in front of you. “Where is he?” He turned to Pryde. “These are his receiving hours--”
“Yes,” replied the Allegiant Asshole. “But perhaps he’s departed early for the Supreme Council meeting. We’d be better off--”
The turbolift doors wailed behind you, and like synchronized chronometers, you, Hux, and Pryde spun to meet the new arrival.
Your brain went blank.
Kylo Ren crossed the shimmering sable floor in a confident stride, his robes replaced now with padded armor that clung to the contours of his powerful, thick chest, his broad shoulders covered with a hooded cape. His fists, still bound in leather, flexed at his sides--and his face...
More beautiful, more arresting than you could have conjured in any memory, his lips still pink and plush, his nose still a long line, his hair still rolling in waves, like black silk-velvet at his shoulders. You met his eyes as he advanced, finding them guarded, resurrecting every fear and insecurity, tempering them with hidden warmth.
“Generals.”
The voice was lightning through your limbs, its owner a perfect match to the soft baritone you’d replayed in your dreams for the past one hundred and fifty two days. All of your systems leapt to life at once: brain spinning, heart soaring, adrenaline coursing. Sweat soaked your neck, your figure thrust whole into a furnace.
“Sir!” Both bowed their heads.
Gazing at him, then, you realized what was happening. This was his throne. You were working on his TIE fighter. Kylo Ren, your lover, your obsession, your galaxy was now the de-facto leader of the actual galaxy. You weren’t in love with the First Order’s Commander, anymore.
You were in love with its Supreme Leader.
Shock anchored your mouth open. Your eyes welled with latent tears. You grinned in disbelief.
“Dude!” You laughed. “What the fuck!”

What if Marinette was a Shimada instead of a Dupain-Cheng?
First things first, I LOVE how this picture came out!! Marinette is so freaking cute, and I think I got really close to Hanzo and Genji. It also took a lot of time and hard work. It’s not perfect, but I’m proud for what it is.
Second, I’ve been seeing a lot of “Marinette Deserves Better” stories (and she really does). While at the same time, I’ve been getting deeper into my Overwatch Miraculous Ladybug Crossover idea. At this point, it’s a rabbit hole of multiple random ideas, and I’ll likely post more another time. But this idea in particular is pretty straight forward... Okay maybe not. It’s actually kinda complex, but I’ll try to summarize it the best I can. Please bear with me:
Marinette was born into the Shimada family. Hanzo and Genji both loved her dearly, but they disagreed on how she should be raised. Hanzo wanted Marinette to become a proper young lady and a key part of the Shimada Clan, while Genji wanted her to be able to live her life the way she wanted, without a care in the world. They tried to find a balance, and in some ways it worked, but there were still disagreements between the two brothers.
When Marinette was about eight years old, their father passed away, meaning Hanzo was to become the leader of the clan. Soon after, the elders of the Shimada clan instructed Hanzo to straighten out Genji in hopes that they could rule the clan together. But when Genji refused, the elders forced Hanzo to kill him. When Marinette found out, she was terrified, and it drove a rift between Hanzo and Marinette. For the first time in her life, Marinette no longer felt safe near Hanzo. She couldn’t believe or comprehend what he had done, and would never understand why. Hanzo wouldn’t give up however, and spent most of the next few weeks desperately trying to console her.
The Shimada clan’s elders saw this as weakness, as Hanzo was wasting time on what they viewed as a lost cause. So, without Hanzo’s knowledge, they sent Marinette to another family in hopes it’ll allow Hanzo to focus on the clan (and possibly allow Marinette to be a normal child). This action drove Hanzo over the edge. Hanzo abandons the clan after losing the last member of his family. He set off to travel the world in hopes that he could find Marinette before too much time had passed. He started losing hope over the years, but forces himself to keep looking for her as he wandered the globe, perfecting his skills and looking to reclaim his honor.
Meanwhile, Genji was saved by Overwatch and had to live as a cyborg. On top of becoming conflicted with what he became, he didn’t believe he could ever reunite with Marinette, and that haunted him the entire time he worked with Overwatch. After Overwatch’s fall, he met Zenyatta who helped him find peace within and around himself. Over time, Genji started to wonder if he could find Marinette some day.
Marinette had been adopted into a new family, the Dupain-Chengs, who raised her as their own. She found a new home in Paris and loves her adopted family, but still has memories of her old life. She never forgot how much her brothers loved her, and how much she loved them. She remembers the night she lost Genji, and the day she was sent away. While she doesn’t have all the answers as to why things happened the way they did, she feels like there’s more than just what she knows. She even keeps a portrait of her and her brothers from years ago (the picture I made).
*Deep breath* Okay... Hopefully that wasn’t too long of an explanation. There's still a lot to cover, but most of it are about what would take place in the present rather than the past. If you want more about this idea, feel free to let me know and I’ll keep this going. And be sure to check out my other Overwatch X Miraculous Ladybug Crossover idea(s)! They're likely unrelated to this, but still fun. I hope you all enjoyed this as much as I did! Please be nice with any critiques, and I’ll catch you next time!

1930s AU (A Halstead Brothers + Halstead Sister + Upstead AU for AU-gust)
A/N: Hopefully this one pops up in the tags now! Sorry to the few people who already liked/reblogged this, but it’d really help me out if you liked/reblogged this one since I’m deleting the one I posted last night. Anyway, the italics at the beginning are essentially "present-day" for the characters (which, in my time frame of the story would be 1945) and the regular font would be a "flashback"...but since the flashback is essentially the whole story which takes place during the early 1930s, I wrote it in regular font. Just didn't want you guys to be confused! Here’s the playlist I listened to while writing this if you want to listen while reading (did not create the playlist myself, I found it): an old fashioned diner jukebox. Anyway, enjoy!
You walked towards the little house that had been your home since you were six years old. "Hey old girl," you said as you petted your horse's head. "I'll see you in the morning, okay? I know Jay and Hailey are awake waiting for me and are probably worried, aren't they?" Your horse picked up her hoof and gave it one good stomp. "I thought so. I'll feed you some sugar cubes in the morning. I'll even give you extra because it'll be Christmas." You gave her one more caress and then walked up to the door of the house.
You used your key to unlock the door and were not at all surprised to see Hailey and Jay in deep conversation.
"Hailey, if she's not here in the next hour, I'm calling the train station. She was supposed to be here yesterday. And it's not like it's that long of a ride."
"Well, luckily you won't have to call," you said as you sat your two suitcases on the floor.
"Y/N! You don't know how worried sick we were," Jay said as he hustled over to you and pulled you into a hug.
"To be fair," Hailey began, "he was more worried than I was."
"Aww, you still worry about me when I'm nineteen," you said as Jay pulled away and Hailey hugged you. "I'm flattered, Jay, really."
"How's betternanian school?" Jay asked with a teasing glint in his eyes.
"Would you give that joke a rest? I was six and didn't know how to properly pronounce veterinarian."
"That probably won't happen."
"How's Natalie?" Hailey asked. "Is she doing okay that Will's away and all her kids are married or at college across the country?"
When you decided to go to veterinarian school, you chose one close to Will and Natalie and they let you stay with them. Then, World War 2 broke out and Will went overseas to work as a doctor in a combat hospital. Natalie's twin boys were both off at separate medical schools across the country, intent on following in their father's footsteps and becoming doctors themselves, and their daughter was married now and living with her husband.
"She's doing as well as expected," you told them. "It helps that Elizabeth and her husband, James, come over for dinner once every week so at least Natalie's seeing one of her children. And, I guess having me around helps mitigate the loneliness. The twins are home from college now for a month's break, so she'll have them there right now, too."
You looked around under the Christmas tree and you spotted a big object covered with a bedsheet.
"Is this what I think it is?" you asked as you walked closer to it.
"It is," Jay confirmed as you lifted the sheet and saw the old rocking horse you used to ride on. Jay had made sure to get you another one when you moved here as the one from Chicago you couldn't bring with you.
"I haven't ridden it since I was eight. You kept it all these years?"
"Right up in the attic," Hailey answered. "We figured it would be the perfect Christmas present for Lilly since she's six now."
"You want something to eat?" Jay asked. "We should probably get out of here and close the doors since all the gifts are wrapped in case Lilly or Anna come to find us."
You grabbed your suitcases and the three of you walked out of the living room and closed the doors.
"Mind if I eat a few of these?" you asked, pointing to the plate of cookies for Santa that Lilly and Anna had placed by the fireplace.
"Go right ahead," Jay told you. But then he heard giggles. "Wait."
You took a step away from the cookies and milk.
"I think we should go check on them," Jay said.
So, the three of you walked down the hall and to the bedroom that the girls shared. "I'll do the honors," you said.
You slowly pushed open the door.
"Now, girls, I thought you were supposed to be asleep."
Eleven-year-old Anna and six-year-old Lilly gasped. "Auntie Y/N!" they exclaimed and rushed out of their respective beds and you first gave Anna a hug and then crouched down to give Lilly one as well.
"Mommy and Daddy said you might not get here in time," Anna told you.
"They did? Well, I'm here now and tomorrow we can play all day with what Santa brought you. But right now, I think you two need to go to sleep so that Santa will come," you said.
"But you just got here!" Lilly complained.
"Yeah!" Anna agreed. Then she gasped. "Can you tell us a story, Auntie Y/N?"
You looked to Jay and Hailey, silently asking if it was okay to let your two nieces stay awake longer. Jay nodded.
"What story do you want tonight?" you asked as you sat down on the rug in the middle of the room and Lilly sat in your lap.
"How Mommy and Daddy met!" Lilly exclaimed.
"You already know that one, Lil," Hailey said as she and Jay sat down and Anna sat between her two parents.
"But it's so good, Mommy!" Anna said. "Please just one more time, please?"
"Oh, alright," Jay caved. "I don't know how much Aunt Y/N will remember since she was your age, Lil, but me and Mommy can definitely tell you the story."
Lilly leaned into you and you ran your hands absentmindedly through her blond hair while Jay started to tell his and Hailey's story of true love and hard times.
***
"Bye, Y/N, I gotta go to work," your big brother said as he woke you up.
"Is Miss Rosalie here?" you asked.
"She is. But, you can sleep longer. I'll be back in time for dinner."
"Why you gotta leave so early, Jay Jay? It's still dark out."
"Because I have to get the milk before the sun rises so the milk doesn't spoil when I'm bringing it to other people."
"Oh, okay." You yawned.
"Go back to sleep. I'll be back later tonight. Be good for Ms. Rosalie."
"I will. Love you, Jay Jay."
"Love you, too."
Then, Jay gave you a kiss on the forehead and grabbed his cap and satchel, said goodbye to Ms. Rosalie and thanked her as he always does, and left the house, the street lamps illuminating the way as he walked towards work.
As he was walking, Jay reflected how it had essentially gotten this bad. At least he had a job now, he used to not have one and you and him were living off of what little money your parents had left behind when they died...at least, the portion that the bank didn't keep.
He had essentially been your primary caretaker for two years. The stock market crashed in 1929, and your mom died a few months after when you were two years old. Not that she had a job though, so it didn't really matter money-wise. Your dad had died in 1931, the same year that Will had graduated from medical school and went to New York to look for a job as a doctor. Jay had worked in a factory at that time and had gotten laid off soon after. But, then he found a job as a milkman. He wasn't getting paid much, but it was enough to pay rent in the crappy and cramped apartment building you both lived in and put food on the table. But, sales were dropping now as no one had money to pay for as much milk as they used to. His sales were half of what they used to be. And, you were now five, six in two weeks, so you were growing and Jay knew that you'd be eating more soon.
When he started loading his company car with milk once he had arrived at work, his supervisor walked over to him and told him that he'd be picking up some of a coworker's route. Well, he was an ex-coworker now because they had laid him off. Jay was just glad he had a job and had enough money to support him and you...even if it was really tight. He hoped he'd be home for dinner like he promised you.
He started on his way and finally, after hours and hours, he was on his new portion of his route.
He made his way up the steps of a house on the corner.
"Good afternoon, ma'am," he said as he set the four bottles of milk down on her front porch. She was currently outside sweeping the porch, her wavy blond hair tied back in two braids. She was in a short-sleeved dress with an apron covering it.
She turned to him and stopped sweeping. "Good afternoon. You're not Jimmy, my usual milkman," the woman said.
"No. Jimmy doesn't work with me anymore. I picked his route. I'm Jay Halstead, ma'am," he replied while tipping his cap.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't introduce myself. I'm Hailey Upton."
"Well, Ms. Upton, pleased to meet you. I'm guessing you have kids just based on me delivering four bottles of milk?" he asked. God, was she pretty. He was getting tongue-tied just looking at her! He knew it wasn't polite to ask that, but it just slipped out.
"No, actually I don't. I'm doing some baking today and that's why I need it. And please, call me Hailey."
"Well, Hailey, I hope it goes well. Should I put you down for four bottles tomorrow as well?"
"No, only one should do for tomorrow, Mr. Halstead."
"Please, call me Jay, ma- Hailey."
"Alright, have a nice rest of your day, Jay."
"You, too. Again, I hope your baking goes well." He tipped his cap once more and headed off. That was his last stop of the day. You and Ms. Rosalie were back at home waiting for him.
***
Jay quickly opened his eyes the minute he felt your hand on his arm. "Jay Jay?" you whispered.
"I'm awake, pumpkin." Your mom had called you pumpkin based on the one time you picked up a pumpkin and dropped it and it splattered everywhere. And, this nickname just stuck.
"I- I know I'm not 'sposed to ask, but I'm real hungry," you said.
Jay didn't bother correcting you on how you didn't ask anything at all; you just told him that you were hungry. And, he was hungry, too. You were running out of food in the house and he needed to run to the market, but everything seemed to be too expensive, so he could only buy the necessities. And, you and Ms. Rosalie had made French onion soup for dinner last night, because that used very minimal ingredients.
Jay hated himself as he scooped out the soup after she left because he realized portions would only be 3/4 of what both of you were used to. He had toyed with the idea of giving you 1/4 of his, so you could have a full serving and he'd have half, but he figured he'd see what would happen. Tomorrow, he knew he'd be giving you a normal portion of whatever he had. After all, he could convince himself to go back to sleep, but you were just a child.
Your parents had always drilled into your head that it was breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And, Jay did his best to try to feed you enough to abide by that rule. But, it was getting harder and harder to do when the entire United States seemed to be going hungry.
"Pumpkin, it's late--"
Your stomach rumbled and Jay swore he felt tears prick his eyes. He couldn't expect you to go to bed hungry.
"Let's go get you something. I'm sure I can find something," he said as he got up.
You grabbed his hand and you two walked into the kitchen. He pulled the string to one of the dim lights, which barely illuminated the kitchen and dining area. Then, he opened the icebox and pulled out a hard-boiled egg and a bottle of milk. He poured half the milk into a glass and handed you the egg.
You went to stick it in your mouth when he stopped you. "No, you have to peel it." You held it out to him. "Do I need to start it for you?" You nodded and he took off a section of the shell and handed it back to you and you continued to peel it.
Normally, Jay would put salt and pepper on it, but you were very low on that as well. And, seeing how hungry you were, you started to eat it without asking for those two basic spices.
Then, you finished the glass of milk and Jay led you back to your bed and you fell asleep with a full tummy...well, as full as anyone in your position could get nowadays.
Unbeknownst to you, you had just eaten half of Jay's breakfast for tomorrow.
***
"How did the baking go yesterday?" Jay asked Hailey as he switched out her four empty milk bottles for one full one.
"It went well. Thank you for asking. I actually had a lot left, so here." She handed him a slice wrapped in tin foil. "It's strawberry pie."
"You didn't have to give this to me," Jay said, trying to hand it back to her.
"Nonsense. So many people are going hungry right now. I have no right to waste food."
"It makes sense when you put it that way. Thank you. My little sister will most definitely enjoy it."
"Oh, let me go grab you another slice so that you don't have to share."
Before Jay could protest, she ran back into her big house and grabbed him another slice.
"Thank you," Jay said as he took the other slice as well.
"You're welcome. No use letting it go to waste. How old is your sister?" Hailey asked.
"Y/N will be six in two weeks," Jay answered.
"Oh, I remember what I was like at that age. I was a little troublemaker, running around with my older brothers even when my mom and dad called me in. And then I'd always make messes in the kitchen."
Jay laughed. "I'd hope she's more well-behaved than that. But, I'd best get going. Thank you for the pie. Can I put you down for one bottle tomorrow?"
"Yes, please. Have a nice day."
Jay nodded at her and then reached down and grabbed the crate with the empty milk bottles. Then, he got in the company car and started on his way back to the factory and then home.
***
"Jay Jay!" you said as you jumped up from your seat at the kitchen table. "I missed you!"
Jay set his satchel, four bottles of milk, and the slices of pie on the counter next to the stove and picked you up and spun you around. "I missed you, too! Were you good for Ms. Rosalie?" He settled you on his hip.
You frantically nodded your head and Jay turned to the older woman. "She was an angel as always. I hope you don't mind, but I made French onion soup again for dinner."
"That's fine, thank you. Your two bottles of milk are right next to mine."
That's how he paid her: by buying her milk. He knew it wasn't a lot, but it's not like he could pay for a nanny. And, she was the one with the cheapest rate in the apartment building. Plus, she had known you since you were a baby, so Jay knew that you trusted her and he trusted her to look after you.
"Oh, thank you, dear." She picked up the two bottles and started towards the door.
"Oh, and tell Mr. Edward I say hello," Jay said, referring to her husband.
"Will do. Enjoy your evening."
Then, she left, and Jay put you down on the floor and moved to start dishing out dinner. When you were both at the table with the food in front of you, a smile spread across his face.
"Pumpkin, after dinner I have a surprise for you."
"Really?" you squealed.
"Yes, really. But, you have to finish your food first and then I will give it to you."
Jay chuckled at how fast you ate your food. He was usually done before you, but tonight you both finished around the same time.
"What's the surprise?" you asked as you set your bowl and spoon on the counter near the rusty sink by Jay's bowl and spoon.
He reached up into the creaky cupboard and grabbed two plates and then two forks from the drawer that would occasionally get stuck.
"How about you go sit at the table and I'll bring you the surprise. How does that sound?"
"Okay!" you scrambled back into your seat and watched as Jay put the things on the plates. He must really have wanted this to be a surprise because he positioned himself so that his back was towards you and you couldn't see a single thing he was doing.
"Now, I need you to close your eyes and I'll tell you when to open them," Jay said, still with his back turned to you.
You quickly closed your eyes and also put your hands over your eyes, causing Jay to chuckle.
He first set his plate with pie and a small glass of milk at his place at the table and then did the same thing in front of you. He crouched down next to you and put his hand on the back of your chair. "And, open."
You threw your hands down at your side and snapped your eyes open. You gasped and turned your head to look at Jay. "We get dessert?"
Jay smiled. "We do. It's strawberry pie from someone who I give milk to. Do you need help cutting it?"
"No, I can do it! Who gave it to you?"
"Her name's Miss Hailey." Then, he went back to his side of the table as you started to eat your pie. He was glad he had given you the bigger slice because you enjoyed it so much; he'd be sure to tell Hailey this.

Two weeks later
Jay sighed as he counted out what little money he had saved up in a lockbox under his bed. He barely had enough to buy you a few sugar sticks from the market after thinking about rent that needed to be paid in another two weeks. At least he knew that Will had sent you something because he told Jay in his letter from last week that he'd be sending you a gift along with your birthday letter. But, Jay still felt bad that he barely had enough money to buy you candy for your birthday. He knew you'd prefer chocolate over hard candy, but he also knew that he had to save money for rent and groceries, so when you both went to the market later, you'd only be able to buy a couple of hard candies.
The change clanked back into the box when he heard the sound of little footsteps coming towards him.
"Happy birthday!" he exclaimed as he picked you up and spun you around. Then, he settled you on his hip and walked into the kitchen. "Does six feel any different than five?" You shook your head back and forth frantically, causing Jay to laugh. "Now, what do you want for your birthday breakfast?"
"Hotcakes!" you exclaimed. Luckily for Jay, you didn't notice how his smile flattered for a quick second when you said that.
"Okay then, hotcakes it is! Can you go put on a dress while I make these?"
You nodded again and then Jay set you down and you ran to your room to change.
When you came back into the kitchen after you got dressed--and got distracted by playing with your doll--your pancakes were sitting on the table. But, you noticed there was only one plate.
"Where's yours?" you asked your big brother as you sat down in your chair and he started cleaning the pan that he had cooked in.
"I ate while you were playing. I didn't want to disrupt your game, pumpkin," he told you, with a smile on his face.
"Oh, okay. Can I eat them now?"
"Of course you can. And then, we'll go to the post office to see what Will brought you."
But, Jay hadn't actually eaten any when you were playing with your doll. There was barely enough flour to make you pancakes, let alone him. So, instead of depriving you of pancakes on your birthday, he just went without.
***
"Mail for Jay Halstead, please," he said at the window of the post office while holding your hand.
"Alright, just one moment." The teller went to the back and grabbed a letter and then handed it to Jay.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
"Jay?" a voice behind him said.
Jay turned, only to be met with Hailey Upton.
"Hailey, good morning. Came to pick up your mail I presume?" he asked.
"You presume correctly." She stepped out of line to stand with him. "And who might this be?" she asked, stooping down to your level.
You blushed and moved to hide behind Jay's leg. Jay chuckled. "Sorry about that. She's particularly shy around strangers. Pumpkin," he started, addressing you. "This is Miss Hailey. She's the one who made us the strawberry pie a few weeks ago."
"It was good. Thank you," you said as you peeked your head out from behind Jay.
"You're welcome. And you must be Y/N?" You nodded. "Jay's told me a lot of good things about you."
You looked up at Jay as if asking him to confirm it. "I've got nothing bad to say about you, you know that."
"I know. If you did, you wouldn't make me hotcakes today," you said.
"Can you tell Miss Hailey what today is?"
You finally moved out all the way from behind Jay. But you still held his hand as you answered the question. "It's my birthday! I'm six!"
"Wow! You're such a big girl! Are you doing anything special today?" Hailey asked, stooping down to your level.
"I'm gonna get some chocolate!"
"Y/N, what'd we talk about on the way here?" Jay asked.
"Oh." You looked down at your feet. "I'm getting hard candy instead."
Hailey looked up at Jay and saw the sadness in his eyes, something that you didn't pick up on since you were so little. She knew what that statement meant. Chocolate was more expensive than hard candies, so she knew the reason that you weren't getting it was because Jay didn't have any money.
"How about we see what Will got you so that Miss Hailey can get her mail?" Jay asked.
You nodded excitedly and Hailey got back in line. Then, Jay opened the large envelope and handed you a small pouch.
You opened it and looked inside. There were these little metal x's and a red bouncy ball. "Jay Jay, what's this?" you asked as you held the pouch out to him.
He looked inside and smiled. "That is jacks."
You cocked your head to the side. "Who's Jack? And why do I have his things?"
Jay laughed just as Hailey started walking back towards them. "It's the name of the game, pumpkin. You bounce the ball and try to pick up one of the pieces before the ball hits the ground. Me and Will played it a lot, but he always won."
"You lost?" you asked as your eyes grew wide. Jay never lost!
"I lost a lot."
Hailey was next to you and your brother now. "Jacks, huh?" Jay nodded. "Me and my brothers used to play it all the time. I'm actually quite good at it."
"Can you teach me, Miss Hailey?" you asked excitedly.
"I'm sure Miss Hailey has things she needs to do today, pumpkin," Jay said, giving Hailey a sympathetic look.
"Oh, it's no trouble. I've actually got ingredients for a delicious chocolate cake at my house if you two would like to come over. I can easily whip up a nice lunch for us, too."
"Hailey, I can't let you do that."
"Please, Jay Jay? Pretty please?" you asked, looking up at him and clasping your hands together to make it look like you were praying. "It's my birthday. Please?"
He looked to Hailey and she nodded once more. "Just because Miss Hailey said it was okay. Care to accompany us to the store to get her some candy before we go to your house?" Jay asked her.
"I'd love to."
***
You were so full after a delicious lunch of turkey sandwiches, potatoes, apples, and chocolate cake, that you had promptly fallen asleep at the table while you were waiting for Jay and Hailey to finish the dishes.
Hailey said it was no big deal, that she could do them, but you mentioned that Jay always washed the dishes and you always dried them. So, then Hailey finally gave in and let him help with the drying.
"Not to be too forward," Hailey began as she handed a plate to Jay to dry, "but is it just you and Y/N? I've just never heard either of you mention your parents."
"Uh, it's just the two of us. Mom and Dad died a few years ago. Will, our older brother, went to New York to become a doctor, so it's been the two of us ever since."
"Well, that little girl really seems to love you."
Jay sighed. "It's probably because she doesn't know any different. Mom died when she was two, so she barely remembers her. And Dad died when she was four, so two years ago. She remembers him a little, but for most of the past two years, I've been the one taking care of her. Along with our neighbor who helps out by watching her when I have to go to work."
"That's very kind of her."
"It is. So, what about you? What do you do to have such a big house? Secret baking company you run? Because I've had desserts you've made so far and both were absolutely delicious."
"They were nothing fancy."
"Oh, but to Y/N they were. She was so excited when I told her we'd be getting dessert. But, how did you end up here, Hailey?"
"In Chicago? Or in this house specifically?"
"Both," Jay said.
"Well, I was born and raised in Chicago. But, my parents are gone, too...not that I was ever too fond of my father. But, they had this house because they used to own a bar, which pulled in some decent money. They left the house to me and my brothers. All of them have their own families and are scattered across the country, so I got it."
"Would be a bad time to be in the brewing business right now, wouldn't it? With prohibition and all," Jay mused. "That might contribute to the high unemployment rates...but, I'm pretty sure that was mostly because of Hoover." He paused. "I'm sorry. I really shouldn't be talking about the complicated politics of our country right now...especially not in front of a lady."
"I have the right to vote now, you know. And have had it for thirteen years," Hailey said.
"I know. I didn't mean it like that. I think it's great that women can vote. I just shouldn't be talking about it that first time I'm in your home is all." He gestured to you. You were still asleep at the table, your head resting on your arms which were resting on the table. "Glad that little rascal gets the chance to voice her opinions."
Your head popped up. "I ain't a rascal, Jay Jay!"
"Oh really now?" He walked over to you and picked you up and started tickling you. "How about now?" he asked with a giant smile on his face while you laughed big belly laughs.
"Jay Jay! Please stop!"
"Only because you said please." He set you back down.
"Aw, she's so cute," Hailey gushed.
"Did you hear that, kiddo? Miss Hailey thinks you're cute. What do you say?" Jay asked.
"Thank you." You blushed. "Can you teach me how to do braids like yours?" you asked, referring to her French braids. "They're real pretty. Jay can only do plain ones."
She turned to Jay while she raised her eyebrows. "You know how to braid?"
He opened his mouth to dispute what you said, but you butted in. "He does! He braids my hair every day when he doesn't have to work!"
You spun around, giving Hailey a view of your braids.
"Okay, birthday girl," Jay said. "I think it's time we head home. We can play jacks there."
"Can we play checkers, too? I like checkers!"
"I know you do. Now, can you say thank you to Miss Hailey for lunch and for the cake?"
"Thank you, Miss Hailey! It was really good!"
"You're welcome, honey." She stooped down to your height and handed you two slices of chocolate cake wrapped in tin foil. "These are for you and Jay to take home. And, you get the bigger slice."

A month later
You had been six for a month, and Jay had known Hailey for around two months. The weather was starting to cool down as summer was turning into fall and there was a slight chill in the air. Because of this, Jay was spending more money on more firewood to place in the wood-burning stove because you now weren't just using it to cook, but for heat as well.
Ms. Rosalie had come down with a nasty cold and didn't want to get you sick. Jay had tried to find a last-minute babysitter for you last night by knocking on nearby apartments, explaining the situation, and even offering to buy them a bottle of milk for their troubles. But no one agreed.
So, Jay told you that you'd have to stay home by yourself. You asked if you could go to work with him, but he said no...even though he desperately wanted to bring you. But, he couldn't risk his job; it was the only meager income the two of you had. Jay needed that job to keep a roof over your heads and food in your bellies. Because of this, he taught you how to lock the door and had made you a quick breakfast and lunch and stuck them in the icebox so that you'd be able to eat while he was gone. And above all, he told you not to answer the door for anyone.
"Bye, Pumpkin," Jay said as he gave you a big hug. "You remember what I told you?"
"Yes. Breakfast and lunch are in the icebox and no opening the door," you answered as you sat up in bed.
"Unless..." Jay prompted.
"Unless it's you, Miss Rosalie, or Mr. Edward."
"Exactly. Now, go back to sleep. I'll lock the door on my way out. I love you."
"Love you, too, Jay Jay."
Then, he left, leaving you alone to go back to sleep.
***
"Halstead!" Jay heard his supervisor yell as he was stacking the last of his crates back at the factory before he hurried home to you.
"Yes, sir?" he asked.
"My office."
Jay swallowed but followed his supervisor.
He entered and closed the door behind him.
"As you know," his supervisor started, "milk sales have been declining at a steady rate as families don't have enough money to buy as much as they used to."
"I'm aware, sir," Jay said as he clasped his hands behind his back.
"This means that we need fewer workers."
No, this cannot be happening, Jay thought to himself.
"I'm sorry to say, but I have to let you go, Jay."
"Please," Jay begged. He knew begging was unbecoming and most likely wouldn't get him his job back, but he had no other choice. "I have a six-year-old sister. I'm the only one who takes care of her. Please sir, I really need this job. If not for me, then please do it for her. Please."
"I'm sorry, son, but I have to let you go. I wish you the best of luck on finding other employment."
Jay wanted to beg for his job back some more, but he knew it was no use. So, he just nodded and left the office, not knowing what to do next.
And, to make matters worse, his rent was already ten days past due.
***
Jay was about to walk into his apartment when he saw a yellow piece of paper nailed to his door. He ripped it down and scanned the big, bold letters.
An eviction notice. He was going to lose the apartment.
If he didn't come up with some money fast, then he and you would have to be out of your apartment in three days.
He sighed and folded the paper and stuck it in his pocket, and then unlocked the door and went inside.
He began to panic when he didn't see you right away, but then he heard a sniffle coming from your room.
You gasped as you heard someone coming towards you and quickly buried yourself under your covers and tried to stay as quiet as possible.
"Pumpkin?" Jay asked. "It's just Jay Jay."
You carefully peeled the covers back from your head. "Jay Jay?" When you saw it was him, you jumped out of bed and quickly crashed into his legs, and clung to them for dear life. "Jay Jay!" you cried. "I was so scared!"
Jay tried to pry your little fingers from his legs, but your grip was so tight that he knew if he tried any harder, he might hurt you and he definitely didn't want that. "Why were you so scared, pumpkin?" he asked as he placed a hand on your head and ran his fingers through your slightly tangled hair.
"There- there were people at the door," you shuddered. "And they made really loud noises and kept yelling."
"What were they yelling?" he asked gently.
"They were yelling for you."
"Did you open the door?"
"No, you told me not to, so I didn't."
"Good girl," he praised. He knew what you were talking about: the men who had nailed the eviction notice to the door of the apartment had probably yelled out his name a few times very loudly, which is what caused you to be scared now. "How about I make us dinner and then we can play checkers, hmm?" he asked. "How does that sound?"
You looked up at him, a few tears still rolling down your cheeks. You wiped them away with your little fists. You nodded. "Can you braid my hair, too? I tried, but I couldn't do it."
That explains all the tangles, Jay thought to himself. "I can do that."
He grabbed your hairbrush and then sat on your bed. You sat on the floor in between his legs and allowed him to brush your hair and start to braid. As Jay was doing this, he was wondering what he was going to do. He didn't have a job, he had an eviction notice, and he had to provide for you. Even though he liked to think he had great problem-solving skills, at this very moment, he had absolutely no idea what to do.
***
"Where are we going, Jay Jay?" you asked as you held his hand and walked through town the next morning.
"We are going to see Miss Hailey," he answered.
"Why?" you asked as you curiously looked up at him.
"Because I think she'd like to spend some time with you."
"Where are you gonna be?"
"I have to go run some errands."
"Can I come? I wanna come with you, Jay Jay."
"I wish I could bring you, pumpkin. But, this is adult stuff. You'd be really bored. You'll have much more fun with Miss Hailey."
You sighed. "Okay."
About twenty minutes later, Jay took a deep breath as he walked up the steps of Hailey's front porch. He hoped he was making the right decision by doing this. He knocked a few times and then Hailey answered the door.
"Jay? What are you doing here so early?" Then, she saw you and stooped down to your height. "Hi, Y/N. Did Jay wake you up to come see me this morning?"
"Yeah," you answered as you rubbed your eyes. You were still kind of tired. Jay didn't know if that was from lack of proper nutrition or general tiredness. He hoped it was the latter. "Jay Jay said he had to do adult things and I can't come with him."
She looked up at Jay and then back to you. "Honey, how about you go run inside to the sitting area and grab a deck of cards or another game we can play while I talk to your brother, how does that sound?"
You looked up at Jay and he nodded. Hailey moved out of the doorway. "Okay!" you exclaimed and then quickly let go of Jay's hand and rushed inside.
"Don't forget to take off your shoes before you get to the carpet!" Jay shouted after you, which caused you to stoop down and take off your shoes on the hardwood before you got to the carpeted areas.
"So, you needed someone to watch her?" Hailey asked.
"Yes. I'm really sorry, but you're the first person I thought of since our neighbor got sick and I need to run to the bank before it gets really busy--"
"Jay, it's fine. She's a little angel. I can take care of her for a few hours." She studied his face and his very worried expression. "Is everything alright?"
Jay sighed. "Hopefully it will be after I go to the bank. Thank you for--"
He was cut off by someone yelling at Hailey from the sidewalk. "Hailey! Still on for tonight?" It was Christopher Hermann, a firefighter.
"Uh, no I'm not baking anything tonight," she quickly answered.
Hermann gave her a confused look but quickly recovered as he realized what she was saying. "Okay, thank you, Hailey."
"You're welcome." Hermann tipped his cap at her before he continued walking. "As you were saying?" Hailey asked.
"I thought you said you didn't own a baking business?" Jay asked.
"I don't," Hailey said quickly. "Sometimes I'll just make some pies for him, his wife, and kids."
"Sorry if I wrecked your plans of baking by dropping Y/N on you. I can try and find someone else."
"No, it's fine. Good luck at the bank and I promise I'll take good care of your little sister."
"Thank you. I'll see you soon."
***
"Sir, I'm sorry," the bank teller told him.
"Please." At this point, Jay wasn't opposed to begging. "I really need a loan. Just a small one so that I can keep a roof over mine and my little sister's head and food on the table. She's just a child. Please."
"If I gave every person in here who had a sob story a loan, I would be out of a job and this bank would be out of business. I'm sorry, but I can't. Best of luck to you and your sister."
He moved on to the next person, leaving Jay close to tears. He was out of options. He was out of a job and he was about to lose the small apartment you two shared in the next two days.
He walked out of the bank with his head held low and tears pricked his eyes. The only option he had was to beg Will to let him and you move to New York to stay with him. But, even though he was a doctor, he still had to feed himself, his wife, Natalie, and his three children. He might not be able to take in two more mouths to feed.
The other thing Jay thought about as he walked down the street back towards Hailey's feeling like a disappointment was moving to a Hooverville. Those were camps set up by the homeless where they lived in tents. Because, in two days, the two of you would be homeless. He could try and sell everything of value he had in the small apartment, but it'd only cover this month's rent, if that, and then he'd just encounter this same problem again next month.
Jay knocked on the door of Hailey's house and she quickly answered it, you right on her tail.
"Jay Jay!" you exclaimed and quickly hugged him.
"Hi, pumpkin. It's time to go home now."
"But, me and Miss Hailey are in the middle of a game!" you argued.
"I've got no issue if she stays to finish it," Hailey said. "Y/N, why don't you go and make sure the pieces are where we left them while I talk to your brother?"
You ran off to go check on the pieces while Hailey stepped outside and closed the door behind her. She took a good look at Jay and saw the tears in his eyes that he was frantically trying to blink back.
"Jay, what happened at the bank?" Hailey asked gently.
"It's nothing I can't handle," he responded coldly.
"Jay, please, just tell me. Maybe I- Maybe I can help. I can't do that if you don't tell me anything."
"I'm just your milkman, well not anymore because I got fired yesterday. Why do you care so much, Hailey?"
"Because that little girl in there needs her big brother. She needs you to be rational about whatever's going on because I will not let her get hurt."
"I would never hurt her," Jay said quickly. "Where is this coming from?"
"Don't worry about it," Hailey said flippantly. "Just, tell me what's going on. Please, Jay. Not just for me, but for that little girl who loves you so much. Maybe I can help."
Jay sighed. "I got let go yesterday. And now I'm getting evicted from my apartment. I even went to the bank to try to take out a loan, but couldn't. I don't know what I'm going to do, Hailey. I really don't."
"Come with me," she said and opened the door.
You were focused on something in Hailey's sitting room, so weren't paying attention as Jay and Hailey made their way to the kitchen.
"I may not have told you everything about myself," Hailey said.
"Hailey, not to be rude, but what are you saying?"
"The reason I have this big of a house when I'm a single woman is because my parents used to own a very successful brewery. My dad, let's just say he wasn't that great of a man, so when prohibition hit, he didn't know what to do. So, he sold the brewery and they moved to another part of the country."
"And you got their house?" Jay asked.
"Yes, but I have to work to make sure I can still pay my bills."
"Then what do you do?" Jay asked. He knew she couldn't make enough money to pay for this place by working in a factory or being a seamstress, which is what most women did to support their husband's incomes.
"You don't know anyone in the government, do you?" she asked.
"No. If I did, they would've been my first visit when I saw the eviction notice, not the bank. Where is all this going?"
"Jay, if I tell you this, I need to know I can trust you, that you won't tell a single person what I'm about to show you."
"You have my word."
"Alright." She walked over to her huge, white kitchen island and pushed, revealing a staircase. "Follow me."
She pulled a string and the staircase became illuminated and Jay followed her. Once they got all the way down the staircase, she pulled another string and then a few more, making the secret basement become illuminated in light.
Jay looked around. There was a bar with glasses behind it and bottles of whiskey and other liquors. On either side of the bar, there were two huge barrels of what Jay assumed had to be beer. There were also three high-top tables with two chairs at each table.
Jay's jaw dropped. "You run a speakeasy?"
"I do," Hailey answered.
"B-But this is illegal," Jay stuttered.
"I'm very much aware."
Jay continued to look around in awe. He knew of course that speakeasies existed and that people had ways of getting alcohol from Canada, but he had never tried it since prohibition happened. Well, he did a few times. But, the minute his mom died, he stopped what little bit he did drink.
"Why did you bring me down here? To drown my sorrows in whiskey?" Jay asked.
"No, I have a proposition for you."
Jay raised an eyebrow. "A proposition?"
"Yes, would you like to hear it?" He nodded. "Since people can't appear drunk on the streets because they'll face arrest and could possibly tell the sheriff about my speakeasy, I need people here to make sure that they sober up before they leave here at night. One of the two people I hired for this job quit last night because his family is moving out west."
Jay nodded, still very unsure where this was going.
"I was wondering if you'd like that job?" Hailey asked.
"You're offering me a job?" Jay asked, trying to maintain his composure.
"Yes. You can have it if you want it."
"I'll take it. Not to be rude, but how much would I be paid?"
"That's just the thing," Hailey began. "Liquor is getting more expensive to smuggle in and brewing supplies are getting more expensive as well because it's all illegal. So, I can't pay you." Jay's face fell. "But, before you say you can't do this, let me tell you one more thing: I have two spare bedrooms in my house. They're yours and Y/N's if you take the job."
"Hailey, I can't put you out like that. You'll have to feed us and I can't let you do that."
"Jay, I have money to pay for more food. Just not to pay for another worker because they always want their wages high since what we do here is so risky. It's no problem. And, think of Y/N. She'd have a roof over her head and she could even have that strawberry pie you said she liked so much," Hailey explained.
Jay couldn't pass up this offer, not when he would be kicked out of his apartment in two days. "Okay, I'll get mine and Y/N's things over here in the next few days. You have no idea how much this means to me."
"It means a lot to me, too. Sometimes men get a little rowdy down here, which is why I have to close when there's only one to help."
"So, that's what that guy was asking about when he asked if you're still on tonight?"
"Precisely."
Jay and Hailey walked back upstairs after Hailey turned off all the lights. Then, she pushed the island back into place and Jay headed over to you.
"Will you play Go-fish with me and Miss Hailey, Jay Jay?" you asked as you held a deck of cards out for him to shuffle.
"I most definitely will, pumpkin, " he said as he sat down on the floor and took the cards from you. "But, I have a question for you first."
"What is it?" you asked as you furrowed your eyebrows. Jay found it cute how concentrated you looked every time he said he had a question for you.
"How would you like to stay with Miss Hailey for a while?"
"What- What about you? You'll be here too, right? I don't want you to leave," you said as your lip started to tremble.
"Oh no," Jay quickly said. "I'll be here, too. I promise. We'll just be living here for a while. How does that sound?"
You nodded excitedly. "Can I bring my dolly, Emmy, here?"
Jay chuckled. "Yes, you can." He started shuffling the cards as Hailey walked back in. "Alright, time for a game of Go-fish."
As the three of you played the game on the carpet of Hailey's sitting room, Jay still couldn't believe it: Hailey Upton ran a speakeasy.
***
"What about this guy?" Jay asked as he held up an old stuff animal Dalmation that once belonged to Will that he found when he was cleaning out the apartment to move into Hailey's. "You want him on your bed, too?"
"Who's he?" you asked as you studied the stuffed animal.
"This was Will's, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you renamed him." He held the stuffed animal out to you and you took it and held it tight to your chest.
"I love him."
"What are you thinking for a name, pumpkin?"
You pursed your lips to the side, a telltale sign that you were in deep thought. "Spot."
"Spot," Jay repeated. "I think that's a perfect name. You think Spot and Emmy are going to be friends?" Emmy was the name of your doll.
"Best friends," you told him.
"Do you want to help me unpack my room or play in here?"
"Play in here," you answered as you picked up Emmy to play with along with Spot.
"Okay. I'll be right across the hall if you need anything."
Jay walked into his room where Hailey was already busying herself by making up Jay's bed.
"Hailey," Jay started, "you didn't have to do that. I'm perfectly capable of making my own bed."
"I'm not busy until tonight, so I figured I'd help you out. I can leave if you'd like some privacy while you unpack, though," Hailey replied.
"No, no, you're fine. This is your house after all. You're allowed to go wherever you want." Jay started busying himself with taking a few things out of a crate. "Can you tell me more about the job I'll be doing tonight?"
"So, tonight, people will knock on the back door. I usually let them in, but they have to say bakery because that's the secret word to be let in. If there's a new person, I'll grab you or Adam, the other guy who does the same job as you, to let him in because I don't know him personally."
"So, for your safety?" Jay asked.
"Exactly. Then, I make the drinks and one of you hands them to the customers. The other cleans tables once someone leaves. And, if the person still seems like a drunk before they leave, you have to stop them from leaving for a few hours until they're essentially back to normal. Typically, I'll explain this to them and it works fine, but sometimes I need some help because, well, I'm small and some of them think it's okay to get handsy."
"I won't let anyone lay a hand on you, Hailey. You have my word."
Hailey nodded. "Thank you. And, before you ask like Adam did about why I don't let you guys make the drinks, it's not that I don't trust you, it's that I know the proper proportions. And, if something happens and one of you is busy making drinks..."
"Something bad could happen to you. I get it," Jay said understandingly. "Being behind the bar is safest for you. You don't have to feel bad about putting your safety first, especially since what we are all partaking in is illegal."
"Thank you for understanding. Now, I'll let you unpack. Just yell downstairs if you have any questions. I'll be in the kitchen making something special for after dinner tonight."
"Please tell me Y/N didn't get a hold of you when I was outside and ask you to make strawberry pie."
"She didn't. And even if she did, I was already planning on making it. She's very polite, Jay. You don't have to worry about her not having manners. You've raised her quite well on that front."
"That means a lot, thank you. This all means so much, thank you."
"Hey, you needed help and I needed help. The feeling's mutual." With that, she left Jay alone to unpack and think about how he was staying with one of the most beautiful and kind-hearted women in the world.
***
"So how does this work?" Jay asked Hailey later that night after he had tucked you into bed.
"Jay, I already told you how it works. You just make sure I'm safe and no drunk customers leave or try to get handsy with me," Hailey answered as she was setting up the bar.
"I know that," Jay laughed. "I meant with Y/N. What do we do about her? She's sleeping in a place she doesn't know and I'm not in my room. I don't want her to get upset when she can't find us."
"Oh," Hailey said. "Guess I didn't think that far ahead." She paused as she thought about what she and Jay could do. "How about this: every fifteen minutes either you or I go upstairs to check on her."
"That works," Jay said.
There were thundering footsteps walking down the stairs.
"Hey, Adam," Hailey greeted when he got all the way down. "Jay, this is Adam. Adam, Jay."
Jay and Adam shook hands. "So you're the new replacement?" Adam asked and Jay nodded. "Don't worry, everything's pretty tame down here. There's just occasionally one or two rowdy newcomers because they haven't drank in a long time and forgot what their limits are."
"Good to know," Jay said.
"It's almost time to open, so how about me and Jay go upstairs for the first few customers so he can see how it's done," Hailey suggested.
Adam waved his hand. "Go ahead. Usually, I know most everyone's regular drinks, so I can handle bartending for a little bit."
"Thanks, Adam," Hailey said.
Jay and Hailey made their way upstairs and Jay went to check on you and then went back to Hailey.
"She still asleep?" Hailey asked.
"Out like a light," he answered.
There was a knock at the door. Hailey opened it a crack. "Bakery," the man said. It was the same one who asked a few days ago if they'd be open when Jay came over to ask Hailey to watch you while he went to the bank to see if he could take out a loan.
Hailey opened the door all the way and allowed him in. He came with a friend. "Christopher, Randall, welcome back," she said once they were all the way inside.
"Thank you," they both said.
"This guy new?" Christopher Hermann asked.
"Jay Halstead," Jay said as he stretched his hand out for Hermann to shake. "Pleasure to meet you."
"You as well. The real pleasure is being here where I can drink alcohol, am I right, Randall?" he asked as he turned to his friend.
"No doubt about it," he replied.
"Any stories from work today?" Hailey asked.
"No, just a simple cat caught in a tree. Nothing that caused somebody's house to burn and thank the Lord for that because of how hard it is to secure a loan for a house right now," Hermann answered.
"You two can make your way on in," Hailey said. "You know where to go."
"Thank you," Randall said and then the two walked away and towards the island that hid the speakeasy underneath.
"They're both firefighters," Hailey told Jay. "And, the one that Christopher kept calling Randall, well he told me that at the station they call him Mouch."
Jay furrowed his eyebrows. "Why? Why would a man want a nickname as silly as that?"
"Apparently it means half man half couch. But, just call him Randall. I'm not supposed to know about that nickname, but Hermann told me one night when he got a little too drunk."
"I'm sure Randall's wife is thrilled that he's a lazy bum," Jay said.
"Only at the station where he sits on the couch and listens to the radio until the bells go off. But, his wife, Trudy, can command a room."
Jay looked at his watch. "I should go check on Y/N again. Be right back."
He checked on you and you were still sound asleep.
After a few more customers came in, he went back downstairs and started his new job. It was hard not to like it when he got to look and talk to Hailey all night.
***
It had been a few months since you and Jay had moved in with Miss Hailey. Well, she was just Hailey to you now because she insisted you call her that. Jay insisted on you still calling her Miss Hailey, but Hailey had vetoed that decision.
Jay cracked an eye open as you excitedly pushed his door open. He quickly closed his eyes again and pretended to be asleep.
You pulled on his blankets. "Jay Jay! Jay Jay, wake up! It's Christmas!" He still pretended to be asleep. You pulled on his arm and he cracked his eyes open and rubbed them.
"Mhm, Y/N, what's wrong?" he asked.
"Nothing's wrong, Jay Jay! It's Christmas! Do you think Santa came?" you asked excitedly.
"I think so," Jay said as he sat up and stretched. "Should we go see if Hailey's awake and then we can see if Santa came?"
You nodded excitedly and he got out of bed and you grabbed his hand, practically tugging him out of his bedroom.
You saw Hailey walking up the stairs with a tray with three mugs on it. "Hailey!" you exclaimed and quickly let go of Jay's hand and ran to her. "Did you go downstairs?" you asked excitedly.
"I did," she told you, letting out a small giggle at your excitement.
God, Jay loved that giggle. Hell, he loved everything about Hailey, her heart, her looks, how she wasn't afraid to run a speakeasy when it was illegal. For all intents and purposes, she was a little rebel and he loved it.
"Did Santa come? Did you see him?" you rushed out excitedly.
"I didn't see him, but he came. There's lots of presents and your stocking is almost overflowing."
You smiled widely and squealed in excitement.
"Here," Jay said as he walked up to Hailey. "Let me take that."
"Oh, sorry," Hailey apologized. "I figured I'd make us some coffee and for that little angel, there's some hot chocolate with whipped cream and a candy cane."
"Hear that, pumpkin?" Jay asked as he took the tray from Hailey. "Hailey made you hot chocolate with all the fixings."
"Thank you!" you exclaimed and then tried to reach for your mug.
"Pumpkin, it's hot. I'm gonna hand it to you when we get downstairs, how's that sound?"
"Okay, Jay Jay!"
When the three of you got downstairs, you gasped. Hailey wasn't kidding when she told you there were lots of presents and your stocking was overflowing. "Santa came! Santa came!"
"He did," Jay said as he set the tray on the coffee table. "Do you want to open your stocking while your hot chocolate cools down?"
"Yes please!"
Hailey walked over to the radio and turned it on to a low volume while Jay helped you get your stocking down. Then, he handed it to you and he and Hailey sat down on the floor next to you as you emptied it.
"Oranges!" you exclaimed as you pulled out two of them. "Chocolate...and candy canes!" You pulled out two more things, too, a new hairbrush and socks, but you were more excited for the chocolate and candy canes. "Your turn!" you told Jay and Hailey.
Inside theirs were only oranges, candy canes, and chocolate. They had both agreed to spend the money on you and not on each other.
You opened your presents and you had gotten a stuffed animal Mickey Mouse from Jay and a pack of cards that were specifically for Go-Fish. They had different color fishies on them! You also got a new nightgown from him.
"What's that?" you asked as you pointed to an object in the corner under the Christmas tree that was covered by a bedsheet.
"That, is my present to you," Hailey told you.
"Can I open it?" you asked as you clasped your hands in front of you as if in prayer.
Hailey laughed. "Yes, you can."
As you had been asking Hailey, Jay was wondering where this gift came from. He knew Hailey had been in charge of your stocking, but he didn't think she had gotten you anything else...much less something so big that it couldn't be wrapped.
You tugged the sheet off and gasped when you saw what was under it.
"A rocking horse!"
Jay's eyes went wide. She wasn't even supposed to get you anything and here she was with a brand new rocking horse for you.
Hailey walked over to you. "There's even a pocket on the side of the saddle so that Emmy and Spot can ride with you," she told you as she pointed it out to you.
"Jay Jay! Can you help me get on?"
Jay smiled and walked up to you and picked you up. "One...two...three!" He set you down on the rocking horse, but not before he threw you up in the air once and then caught you and placed you on the rocking horse.
You started moving back and forth on the rocking horse and singing the lyrics to Santa Claus is Comin' to Town. Jay and Hailey just watched you while they drank their coffee, enjoying the morning and seeing you so excited.
"Where's your presents?" you asked after a few songs. "Santa didn't bring you any?"
"He only brings presents to good little children, pumpkin," Jay told you.
"But you were good, Jay Jay!" you argued.
"I know," he chuckled. "But I'm a grown-up, so is Hailey."
You scrunched up your nose. "I don't wanna be a grown-up. It doesn't sound fun." Then you remembered something. "What about the presents I helped you with?" You looked down at the red tree skirt. "They're right there!" you exclaimed as you pointed to the two gifts that were still waiting to be unwrapped. You pointed to one. "That once's for Jay Jay from me and Hailey!" You pointed to the last gift. "And that one's for Hailey from me and Jay Jay!"
Jay got up and grabbed both gifts. "After you," he told Hailey, his eyes twinkling because he knew what was inside.
She gently took the wrapping paper off and then smiled and looked up at him. "How did you know this was my favorite book?" She ran a hand over the cover of a brand new copy of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. More importantly, she wondered how he could afford all this. She knew that she had started paying him a little a few months ago as prices for products dropped, but she knew it wasn't a lot.
"I noticed it on your bedside table one night when I brought you a cup of tea. I just assumed it was your favorite because of how worn the pages were. I'm glad I guessed correctly," he said.
"Thank you. This is- I love it," Hailey said. Her mom had given her a copy of that book once she reached second grade and her mom had helped her read it. She always remembered those good memories when she read it, which was why she's always read if she couldn't make it to the library, even to this day. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." His fingers brushed her hand.
Hailey turned to you. "Did you help your brother pick this out?"
"Yeah! I went to the bookstore with him! It was so big!" you told her as you continued rocking back and forth on your rocking horse. Jay had no doubt that that would be your favorite toy.
Hailey passed Jay his gift. It wasn't hard like her's had been, it was sort of flimsy as well.
"I wonder what it could be..." he trailed off, thinking that you would tell him.
"It's--" you clamped your mouth shut as you remembered what Hailey had told you. "Hailey told me I can't tell you yet! You gotta open it!"
"Okay, okay, I'm opening it." Jay also gently took off the wrapping paper so that it could be saved for next year's Christmas.
Jay removed the paper and saw what was inside: between two pieces of cardboard were two shirts. They were both made out of the same blue and white striped fabric, but one was short-sleeved and the other was long-sleeved. He held the long-sleeved one up to get a better look at it.
"Wow, Hailey, these are amazing. Did you make these?" he asked.
"I did. Y/N helped me pick out the fabric. She said you liked blue," Hailey said.
"Well, she's right. I do like blue."
"And, we figured we'd give you a long-sleeved one that can be worn almost any time and then a short-sleeved one for the summer months."
"You both made great choices. Thank you so much." He looked up at you. "Thank you, too, pumpkin. Now, can you get down and give me a hug or do I need to help you down?"
"I can do it!" You slid down off the rocking horse and then ran to Jay, barrelling into his open arms.
"Arghh, my favorite girls. No better way to spend Christmas."
Your stomach rumbled.
"I should get started on breakfast," Hailey said and stood up.
"I'll help," Jay offered. He let go of you and set you on the couch and then handed you your hot chocolate. "Can you do something for me?" he asked you.
"What is it?" you asked after you had taken a sip of your hot chocolate, getting whipped cream all on your upper lip.
"Can you not get on the rocking horse and stay here and listen to the radio until me or Hailey get back?"
"Okay!" You paused. "Can you put me on there now? I promise I'll be good," you pleaded.
Jay agreed, but only because it was Christmas. "Now, me and Hailey will be in the kitchen if you need anything. Merry Christmas, pumpkin."
"Merry Christmas, Jay Jay."
Jay handed you your hot chocolate to take one last sip and then you handed it back to him. Then, Jay and Hailey made their way into the kitchen to start on the Christmas breakfast.
Hailey opened the icebox as Jay began grabbing some plates...the fancy China ones that Hailey said she'd only get out for holidays.
"So, I'm one of your favorite girls?" Hailey asked while she took the cinnamon roll dough, which she had made a few days ago and rolled up, out of the icebox and set them on the counter.
"I mean, you are, but if you're uncomfortable with that...you know, I think I just meant to say favorite girl to Y/N, but I made it plural and--"
"Jay," she cut him off. "You're one of my favorite boys."
"Only one of them, huh?" he joked. "Who else is there?"
"The firefighters," she answered nonchalantly. "They were the ones who helped me with the rocking horse."
"I was wondering who made that."
"I just told Hermann one night that I thought Y/N would like a rocking horse, and he offered to build it with help from some of the other firefighters. All it took was a night of free drinks for each of them who helped."
"How'd you get it inside? It wasn't there last night."
"Hermann and some of the other firefighters stopped over early this morning and dropped it off. I just threw the bedsheet over it."
"So that's why you had coffee and hot chocolate all made up. You had been awake."
"Exactly right."
Jay opened the oven door turned the dial, then moved out of the way to allow Hailey to put the cinnamon rolls in the oven.
"You don't have to help me, you know," Hailey pointed out when she closed the oven door. She had never met a man so keen on helping her in the kitchen or with daily household chores before she had met Jay.
"Hailey, you tell me this every day. I've been used to cooking and cleaning for the past two years since it was just me and Y/N. I'm not going to wake up one day and stop doing that. Besides, I'm helping you out. You shouldn't have to do everything around here."
Hailey nodded and smiled. God, was Jay sweet and very handsome, too! "Well, in that case, do you want to get started on the eggs while I whip up the icing for the cinnamon rolls?"
"Uh, I was wondering if maybe you'd make the eggs?" Jay asked.
Hailey shrugged. "Okay."
"It's not that I don't want to do it," Jay backtracked. "Y/N just told me she prefers your eggs over mine."
"I think I know why," Hailey laughed.
Jay's eyes twinkled with humor as he looked at her. "Is that so?"
"It is so. It's because you whisk the eggs in the pan and not in the bowl before."
"So she likes the whites mixed with the yolks, got it," Jay replied and reached into the cabinet and grabbed Hailey a bowl. "In that case, care to pass me the icing recipe?"
She passed him a piece of paper and they worked in comfortable silence, the only noises to be heard were the sounds of whisking and sizzling and the faint sounds of the Christmas carols coming from the radio in the living room.
Hailey began plating the eggs and placed them on the counter. "I'll pop them back in the oven to keep them warm once the cinnamon rolls are almost done."
"Good idea. I'll go check on Y/N. Icing's finished as well."
Hailey nodded and then began filling the sink with warm water to start washing some of the dishes.
"I'll be back to help you dry in a minute, don't you worry."
"You'd never miss that," she joked and Jay shook his head as he walked over to go check on you.
When he saw you, he held back a laugh. You were still on the rocking horse, but your head was leaning against the horse's head, the reins loose in your hand, as you quietly snoozed away to the Christmas carols.
He thought about waking you up but thought that Hailey would like to see how adorable you looked as well. So, he walked back to the kitchen.
"Back so soon?" Hailey asked. "Where's my little angel?"
"She's asleep on the rocking horse. Guess waking up early and all the excitement of the presents really tired her out. She's adorable."
Jay waved his hand, signaling for her to follow him and she did.
Hailey cooed at how cute you were as the two of the them stood in the open doorway to the sitting room.
"She really is the cutest little girl alive," Hailey said.
"I'd do anything for that kid," Jay said.
"You're a good brother, Jay. Raising her to have manners and know how to behave, you did really well with her."
"Thank you. I just tried to do what my mother did for me and Will." Since their time together, Jay had told Hailey stories about his childhood and his parents. These were mostly told downstairs in the speakeasy when Hailey had allowed Adam to go home and it was just the two of them cleaning up together.
"Well, she'd be proud of you."
She looked up at his green eyes, which were gazing at her gently. Then, she looked up at the doorway and laughed softly.
"What?" he asked.
"Nothing, it's nothing."
Jay looked up and spotted the mistletoe. They had hung it up there a week and a half ago when they had decorated for Christmas. But, they never really did the tradition of kissing under it; it was solely for decoration purposes.
"I don't think we can avoid it now since it's Christmas," Jay said. Hailey furrowed her eyebrows. "Hailey, we've been avoiding the tradition since we hung it up." He took a step toward her and grabbed her hand. "You're beautiful and I've never met anyone as kind-hearted and sweet as you and we're underneath the mistletoe." He tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear.
"That we are," Hailey agreed and smiled a toothy smile.
They looked into each other's eyes and all they saw was love and affection. So, Jay did what he wanted to do since they hung that piece of mistletoe: he leaned in and gave the most beautiful girl whom he had ever laid eyes on, a kiss and a Christmas kiss at that.
***
Winter had come and gone and spring was finally in the air. Jay and Hailey had finally admitted their feelings to each other and whenever they kissed, you always giggled...which caused Jay to pick you up and tickle you.
You were sitting in the garden with Hailey working on planting new flowers and vegetables, while Jay went inside to grab the three of you glasses of lemonade.
"Are these tomatoes, Mommy?" You asked as you picked up a package of seeds.
Hailey froze. Mommy. She most definitely wasn't your mommy.
"They are, baby. They'll be tomatoes once they get lots and lots of water and sun."
Jay was walking back at the same exact time you started to reply to Hailey. "Okay, Mommy! I can't wait to see them! I hope they're good."
"Hey, pumpkin," Jay said as he walked up to you and squatted down next to you. "You thirsty?" He sent Hailey a look that read that he had no idea what was going on with those names either. He held the glass of lemonade out to you.
"Thank you, Daddy!" you exclaimed as you took the glass of lemonade from him.
Jay's eyes widened and he looked at Hailey once more as you took big gulps of lemonade.
"Pumpkin, who are you calling Mommy and Daddy?" he asked gently, trying to word this as easy as possible so that you could understand it and so that it wouldn't upset you.
"You're Daddy and Hailey's Mommy!" you told him.
He furrowed his eyebrows. "I thought I was Jay Jay."
"You are. But you're Daddy, too," you told him.
"Pumpkin, me and Hailey love you so, so much, but we aren't your mommy and daddy. Mommy and Daddy died when you were little," Jay told you as he took the empty lemonade glass from you.
"I know that," you said as you started digging another hole for more seeds, not grasping how important this conversation actually was.
"Then why are you calling us that?" Hailey asked as she twirled one of your braids between her fingers.
"Because Annie told me all about her mommy and daddy and you and Jay Jay do the same things as them. So you're like my mommy and daddy." Annie was one of the neighbor girls you'd play with outside occasionally. Her dad also came to the speakeasy every Saturday night...but you obviously didn't know that. You didn't even know what a speakeasy was, let alone that there was a speakeasy in the basement of your house. You moved the dirt from the hole and to the side of you.
"Y/N, we love you so much, but you..." Hailey trailed off, not knowing how to tell you that you couldn't call her and Jay Mommy and Daddy.
"You can't call us Mommy and Daddy, pumpkin," Jay told you.
Your lip began to tremble. "Why not? You are my mommy and my daddy."
"Why do you want to call us that?" Jay asked as his heart broke when he saw the tears forming in your eyes.
"Be- because you do Daddy things like pick me up and spin me around. And wake me up and tuck me in and let me sleep in your bed when I'm- when I'm scared."
"And Hailey?"
"She does Mommy things like tuck me in and wake me up, too. She helps me with my hair and you guys always give me bedtime kisses and stories."
Jay looked at Hailey. He really didn't know how to tell you that you couldn't call them that.
"Is there anything else, Y/N?" Hailey asked, looking directly at you as she started to rub your back to hopefully stop you from crying.
"I don't 'member Mommy and Daddy!" you cried and hurled yourself into Jay's arms. "I don't 'member them and I want a mommy and daddy!"
"Oh, pumpkin," Jay said. He never really thought about the fact that you wouldn't really remember your mom and dad and how you might call him that because that's what he seemed like to you. He knew you'd have questions, but he didn't think you'd try and call him and Hailey those titles. "You do have a mommy and daddy. They're just in heaven, remember?"
"But I don't 'member them!" you cried again.
"I know, I know. Would it help if I show you pictures of them?" Jay asked.
"You have pictures of 'em?" you asked, removing your head from Jay's chest.
You had only seen a few pictures of them that Jay had in his room in frames and those were the ones that used to be in your old apartment, too.
"I do. What do you say we all go inside and look at them?" Jay asked.
"Okay."
He helped Hailey to her feet and then placed you on his hip and the three of you made your way inside.
You stayed with Hailey on the couch in the sitting room while Jay went upstairs to grab a box of old pictures.
"This is our mommy and this is our daddy," Jay said as he pointed out the people in the picture when he sat down a few minutes later. "See, you have a mommy and daddy. You just can't see them right now."
"When can I see them?" you asked.
"Not for a long time until you go up in the sky to heaven," he told you.
"Like all the old people?"
Hailey laughed. "Yes, like all the old people," Jay answered.
He pulled out another picture. "There's Mommy, there's Daddy, there's Will, and there's me," he told you as he pointed to the people in the picture.
"Where am I?" you asked as your fingers brushed the black and white photograph.
"You are right here." He pointed to your mommy's belly.
"But that's mommy's tummy, Jay Jay. I'm not there!"
"Yes, you are. You had to grow big and strong and then one day you just came here," he explained.
You placed your hand on Jay's belly. "Where's your baby, Jay Jay?"
Hailey held back laughter while Jay placed his big hand on top of your small one. "I can't have babies."
You cocked your head to the side. "Why not?"
"Because..." he trailed off, looking to Hailey for support.
"Y/N," she began. "That's a talk for when you're bigger." She grabbed a deck of cards from the table in front of you. "Do you want to play Go-Fish? I'll even get you some more lemonade."
That piqued your interest. "Yes, please!"
You slid off the couch and Jay breathed a huge sigh of relief. He had no idea what he'd do without Hailey Ann Upton.
***
"Wow," Jay mused as he looked at the morning newspaper while he and Hailey were sipping their morning coffee.
"What? Shocked that Y/N's still sleeping? Maybe she fell asleep late because she was so excited to go to the fair today," Hailey said.
"No, no," Jay said. "It's not that, even though I am shocked that she's still sleeping when it's eight o'clock already. But, no, they're thinking about ending prohibition."
"What?" Hailey gasped.
"Right here." Jay passed the newspaper to Hailey and pointed to the heading which is what told them that the US only needed one more state to ratify the 21st amendment, which at this point looked like it would be Utah.
Hailey skimmed the article. "Wow. You're right. I mean, I think we kind of knew this was coming, but I didn't think it would actually happen."
"Me neither. Do you know what you're going to do if it does become legal?"
"I mean, I've obviously thought about it, but not all the way if you know what I mean. I kind of wondered about it, but I never made a plan." Hailey tried her best to explain how she had been thinking.
"Do you want to stay in Chicago?" Jay asked.
"I don't know. I love the city, but I'd also like to have the country air. Give Y/N a big yard to run around in instead of the small one we have now."
"Jay Jay! Hailey!" you exclaimed as you ran into the kitchen.
"Speak of the devil," Jay laughed. "We'll talk more about it later." He turned to you as you pulled yourself up on a kitchen chair. "You excited for the fair, pumpkin?"
"Yeah!" you exclaimed. "I can't wait to see all the animals!"
"Which ones do you want to see the most?" Hailey asked.
"The piggies!"
"The piggies, huh?" Jay asked. "Why are they your favorite?"
"They're pink and they're fat and they're cute!"
"Pink, fat, and cute," Hailey repeated. "Great description of pigs. How about me and Jay Jay get started on breakfast and then we can get going. How does that sound?"
"Yay! Piggies!"
Jay laughed and got up to help Hailey with breakfast while you were practically vibrating in your seat with the excitement at the thought of seeing all the animals at the fair.
***
"Piggies!" you exclaimed as you saw them in their pen and tugged on Jay's hand to make him walk faster. "C'mon, Jay Jay!"
Jay laughed. "They'll still be there in a few minutes when we get there."
"There's chickens, too!" Hailey told you. "Maybe you'll see some babies, do you remember what those are called from the book we read about animals at the library?"
"Chicks!"
"Great job!" Hailey praised.
By now you had made your way to the pen and tugged Jay's hand when you walked into it.
"Piggy!" you exclaimed as you ran up to one.
"What sound does a pig make, Y/N?" Jay asked as he crouched down next to you to make sure you didn't put your hands near the pig's mouth.
"Oink oink! Mr. Piggy says oink oink!" you said, quoting the book you and Hailey read the other day.
"She must've really liked that book," Hailey said.
"Obviously," Jay agreed as you kept petting the pig. The pig made its snorty oink oink sound which caused you to pull your hand away and giggle loudly.
"Can we get a piggy, Jay Jay?" you asked.
"Not while we're in Chicago, Y/N," Jay told you.
"So if we go out of Chicago, we get one?" you asked hopefully.
"Maybe, pumpkin, maybe."
***
"So, what are you thinking?" Jay asked a few days later when it was he, Adam, Hailey, Hermann, and a few others in the speakeasy late at night.
"I don't know," Hailey said. "But, you saw how Y/N looked with those farm animals and how she loved petting all of them."
"So, you want to move out of Chicago?" Jay asked.
"I don't know, but it sounds like you've thought a lot about it. Care to enlighten me?"
"Oregon, Wisconsin, New York. Those are all options," Jay shrugged.
"I thought we were getting out of the city and not going into another one," Hailey joked. "So why New York?"
"Upstate New York, where there'd be all the forests and wilderness. Obviously, we wouldn't be living out in the middle of nowhere. I don't think either of us would enjoy that."
"No, not in the slightest," Hailey agreed.
Hermann walked up to them. "So, if you two leave with the kid, what's gonna happen to this place?" he asked.
"Didn't your mother ever teach that listening to others' conversations is actually quite rude?" Jay asked.
"Well, sorry. But all us firefighters will have to find a new place to blow off some steam," Hermann replied.
"We'll only be leaving if prohibition actually ends," Hailey explains. "Still waiting on one more state to ratify the amendment."
"So, if it does end, what are you thinking?" Hermann asked.
"Alright, spit it out already," Jay joked. "What are you thinking, Hermann?"
"Well, I'm thinking about retiring soon and if it ends, I'd love to have a business endeavor to throw myself into. If I don't have anything to work on, the missus will not be happy with me."
"So, what are you saying?" Jay asked.
"Hailey Upton, if prohibition ends and you and Jay decide to leave, would you allow me to buy this place and turn it into the most booming bar in all of Chicago?"
"I--"
"Excuse me?" A man asked rudely as he leaned over the bar. "I've been waiting on another drink for minutes now!"
"Sir," Hailey began, "I can only give you so much because we need you to be sober enough when you walk outside to leave."
"I'm paying for this! You can't tell me how much I can and can't drink!"
"Sir--"
"Make me my damn drink, bitch!"
He reached out a hand to grab Hailey's wrist, but she jumped back so she was out of his reach.
"Reach over that bar one more time and I will lay you out where you stand," Jay told him sternly.
"I highly doubt that," he scoffed and went to reach over the bar again.
But, Jay was too fast and landed a solid punch to the man's jaw.
"Son of bitch," he muttered as he grabbed his jaw.
"Believe me now?" Jay asked smugly. Then, he turned to Adam. "Care to take care of this?"
"Yeah, I got it." Then, he turned to the man who was still grabbing and massaging his jaw. "You need to go take a seat, buddy, while I get you some ice. Because, hate to break it to you, but we're not letting you leave for at least another hour."
The man groaned but reluctantly went to take a seat while Adam got him some ice...mostly because he didn't want another punch to the jaw from Jay.
Jay walked behind the bar. "Are you okay?" he asked Hailey.
"I'm fine. He didn't even touch me," she replied.
"Still," Jay said. "I'd really prefer if you went upstairs and went to sleep. I don't want anything to happen to you."
"Jay, I'm--"
"Hailey," Hermann cut her off. "I can make the drinks. You just go upstairs and get some rest."
"Hermann, I can't pay you for this. And, do you even know how to make all the drinks?" Hailey asked.
"I'm fine with not being paid, Hailey. I just want to help you out and make sure you're safe, just like Jay here. And, I've been here enough and seen you make the drinks that I'm pretty sure I can handle it."
"Okay," Hailey relented.
"I'll walk you upstairs," Jay offered. "Can you two handle it if I'm gone for a few minutes?" Jay asked Adam and Hermann.
The two said they were fine and Jay and Hailey went upstairs.
"If prohibition ends," Hailey began when Jay and Hailey were almost to her bedroom, "I think we should take Hermann up on his offer."
"Hailey, that's a big decision. Are you sure you don't want to think about it?" Jay asked as he grabbed her hand.
"Tonight opened my eyes. Late nights, the possibility of being in situations I don't want to be in. If we have kids, I'm going to need to be there with them."
"Hailey, I'd love to have kids with you. But, I'm lost. What does this have to do with selling the speakeasy to Hermann?"
"If we have kids, I want us to be there for them at night when they have nightmares, not one of us going upstairs every fifteen minutes to check on them like we do with Y/N. And, if it's all legal, we'll have more rowdy customers. I don't want either of us to get hurt and I also don't want one of the kids to walk downstairs, if we have kids, and see angry customers," Hailey explained.
"I understand that. It's your decision, though. You own the speakeasy. It's your decision. I'll be with you on whatever you decide to do."
"Jay, I love you so much and I never want to be without you. And if you want to move, I'm going with you. I'm going where you go."
"I love you, too. And, you're gonna have to put up with me for a long time because I'm not leaving you."
***
"We've got everything, right?" Jay asked as he and Hailey looked on to the house. Jay held suitcases in his hand and so did Hailey. You held Spot and Emmy close to you.
"You sure about this?" Hermann asked. "You still have an hour before the train comes to back out."
"We're sure, Christopher," Hailey confirmed. "Everything is ready for us in New York."
"My brother had a lot to do with that," Jay supplied.
Prohibition had officially ended a month ago and when Jay had told Will over a quick phone call what was going on, he was shocked, to say the least. But, he agreed to try and find a place for them in upstate New York. So, he took Natalie and his three kids on a day trip there where they looked at some houses and went through the shops and got ice cream. Then, Will told Jay he had found the perfect place. So, Jay and Hailey sent him the money and Will bought the house for them.
"Bar have a--" Jay was quickly cut of by you asking a question.
"What was Mommy's name?" you asked.
"It was Molly," Jay answered. "But, we don't interrupt, okay?"
"Sorry. But, Hailey told me she'd get me another dolly when we get to New York and now I'm gonna name her Molly."
"That's great, pumpkin, really great. Anyway," he started, turning his attention back to Hermann, "Bar have a name yet?"
"You know, I think Molly's would be a good name," he answered.
You gasped. "You're gonna name the restaurant after my mommy? Did you hear that, Jay Jay?"
"I did. Hermann, you can't. It's your bar."
"I know. But, if your mom didn't have you, then you wouldn't have fallen in love with Hailey, and I wouldn't be getting the most important thing to me: the bar," he told him.
"I'm telling Cindy you said that," Hailey joked.
"You wouldn't do that. You're too nice for that, Hailey."
"So, it's Molly's?" Hailey asked.
"The bar's Molly's."
"Well, take good care of it. I didn't run it illegally for years just to have it be destroyed by a regular."
"Don't you worry. And, if all else fails, at least the firefighters will come to it."
***
"This is our house?" you asked excitedly when Will picked the three of you up from the train station. Apparently, he and Natalie made enough money to feed them and their three children and still have enough money to afford a car.
"It is, pumpkin. And look over there." Jay pointed outside the car to a pen...well two pens and a chicken coop.
"Piggies!" you exclaimed. You gasped. "We get to keep them?"
"We do," Jay confirmed.
"There's even a horse that you can ride," Hailey told you.
"Like my rocking horse?"
"Just like that. But you can feed him and brush him. And we have hens, too. Those are the girl chickens."
"They lay the eggs?"
"That's right," Will said. "You sure know a lot about animals, pumpkin. Are you gonna be a veterinarian when you get bigger?"
"What's that?" you asked as you furrowed your eyebrows.
"So, I'm a doctor for people, but you'd be a doctor for animals."
You gasped. "Yay! I wanna be a betternanian!"
Everyone laughed at your pronunciation of the word veterinarian, but you were too excited to realize you had said it wrong and to even care.
As Jay grabbed a few things out of the car and made his way to the house, he reminisced on how he got here. If he hadn't had his route changed as a milkman, if he wouldn't have gotten fired and gotten an eviction notice, then he wouldn't have met the love of his life, Miss Hailey Anne Upton...even though he hoped he'd be able to change her title to Mrs. Hailey Anne Halstead in the next few months. And, even though he had to go look for a job tomorrow, he had a home with you and Hailey, you were happy with all the animals, and he was closer to the rest of his family in Will, Natalie, and his nephews and niece, and that was all that mattered.

HAPPY NEW YEAR
There are so many people I’ve met on this site, so many friends I’ve made. I joined tumblr only a few months ago, but my life has already drastically improved. I smile more and laugh more and I feel happier all the time, knowing that you all are just a click away. I’ve often heard people refer to tumblr as a hellsite, but I don’t fully agree with that. True, some things on here are crazy, but more than that, I’ve found people like me. I’ve found people who understand me, who think like me and feel like I do. Ya know, before I joined tumblr, I had never met another bisexual person(crazy, right?). Y’all have made life more enjoyable and happier and brighter, and for that, I’ll never be able to thank you enough.
I have soooo many people I have to thank, so I’ll try to keep the list of people as short as possible: all my closest friends and all the people who have been amazing and I have loved seeing since I joined tumblr earlier this year <33
@one-neat-nerd you were the first blog to ever follow me, and I don’t remember if you were the first blog I followed, but you definitely were in the first 10. You were a wonderful introduction to tumblr, and I love everything you post/reblog. We’ve never really talked, but I still want you to know that I appreciate you.
@warblerjeff you’ve changed your url more than 3 times since I first followed you, and it always takes me a second to recognize you aha! But when I do, I’m immediately have a rush of happy memories- all your Glee posts and all of the Glee content I get from you. We’ve never really talked, but seeing you on my dash is always so amazing.
@jesussavedevenme aha hi! We’ve never really talked, but you were one of the first few blogs I followed when I first joined tumblr, and I know I tagged you in a lot of stuff at first (because i didn’t have any other friends lmao), so sorry about that! 😅 You’re really cool and I hope you have an amazing 2021.

Have a spectacular and immeasurably awesome 2021 <333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333
@starry-tea-party Abina. Abina you are my rock. You are my light, my star, my sunshine, my galaxy. I love you so much, I can’t even begin to describe it. I don’t know if I can do justice to just how much you’ve helped me. Words... words have never been my strong suit. I love writing because I can weave stories together, piece together words I like to form sentences, and use those sentences to form narratives. Writing has always been easier for me than talking.... because in writing, I don’t have to worry what others will think, or how others will perceive me. I select the best words, and I present those words- the words I meticulously chose and nit-picked- to the audience. Life is a stage, and I have never been great at improv. I often find it hard to tell people things, to convey my meaning in the best possible way and to know exactly what words I need in any given situation. Talking is hard for me. But with you... with you, I never have to monitor what I’m saying. I never feel the need to reread and reread my messages before sending to make sure everything is in perfect order. It’s... it’s easy to talk to you. It’s easy to speak and I don’t worry when I’m with you. You make me feel so at ease, and I love you so much. I don’t have to worry about saying the wrong thing, because I know that you’ll always support me and be by my side with a kind word and a heart of gold. Because that’s who you are. You are a creator, a dreamer, a lover, a visionary. You’re a friend. You are the hand that pulls people out of the water. The light that shines the pathway. You are the rock- the mountain we stand upon and look out over the beautiful sea. We look down at the seas below us and say, “how have we climbed so high already?” The reason is because you stand so tall, so bright and so magical, that we climb, we climb and we look out at the world below us. Not only are you tall, strong, powerful, but you lift people up right alongside you. There is nothing like the high of seeing the world stretch out beneath your feet, swinging you legs through the open air but knowing you’ll never fall. You represent that high in my mind. You represent and you remind me of the exhilaration of feeling untouchable- uplifted by love and kindness, able to reach heights you’ve never been to before. There is so much that can come when someone extends their hand to you. So much more can be achieved when there are two, holding each other up. You have held me up for so long. Every since we met, you have brought a smile to my face at the thought of you. Every time I think of you, my heart swells and I can’t breathe. Every comment you make or put on something I post has me screaming internally ans smiling uncontrollably. Whenever I see your icon I know my day is about to get one million times better. So thank you, Abi. For being my rock.
#wooh that was a lot#i love you all so much more than you can even comprehend#joining tumblr was the best part of 2020 for me#meeting all of you#happy new year

So uh. I reblogged the latest wings au chapter and forgot to actually read it until now. Working memory is little bitch like that sometimes I guess.
-Elwin! I’ll be honest, I sort of forgot about him, but it was so great to see him again and hear his side of everything. And yay for the kotlcrew finally getting their injuries looked at by someone who knows what they’re doing.
-The middle section of them all just vibing and being teenagers was great, I love seeing them interact like real people.
-This is kind of a minor point, but I think there was more of Wylie in this chapter than there has been in a little while, so that was cool. I hope there’s more of him again soon, and I’m really interested to see your take on his ability and his wings.
-The messages! I’m guessing they’re riddles, and I wonder if the messages she hasn’t looked at contain more clues to the riddles.
-The ending!! Is it something about the presence dragons of dragons that inspires violence in people (which would be so cool)? And if so, what does that mean for Marella 👀…?
this just reminded me that 1. i still need to read my partner's fic they posted a very long time ago 2. there's a little more writing left for the wings au today to meet my goal. but!! onto your ask first! this is super sweet and i'm very glad you enjoyed the chapter!! trying to balance adding a new character while keeping up the interactions amongst the others and all that!
-- I'll be honest I kinda forgot about Elwin too and put off adding him in probably longer than made sense, but they just finally reached the breaking point where it was getting more and more annoying to keep track of all the injuries (on my end, at least!) so from a writer's perspective he's kinda being used as a reset opportunity, because he wouldn't leave anyone unattended to. so once he's completed his part in this section of the story, I can approach the next with a clean slate in terms of injuries and what they're physically capable of! and it was also just a great opportunity to get an outside perspective and some feedback on a few of their more questionable decisions without being judged. it's just been them working amongst each other with no outside input, which only helps them to a certain degree. in that way, i guess elwin functions like a mental reset too, changing how they'll think about and approach any future endeavors. also i just like him :)
-- me too!! as someone who is essentially smack in the middle of all the characters' ages, I sometimes feel there's the teenage part of them that's missing, likely because they were written by someone who is not currently a teenager! which is fine, I don't expect her to be able to write about just casually being teenagers in this day and age without having that experience, but as a fic writer I can kinda slip in some of that banter we have with each other to just give them more of an awake feeling, like they're more people-like! because that kind of conversation and just improvised banter poking fun at each other is the kind of thing I would do with people in real life! it's also just fun to give them a slightly different twist, because there's an aspect of them I get to explore that Shannon doesn't as I have removed the romance
-- yep! there was more Wylie that I think there's been in a while--he had a few brief lines in chapter 9 (or was it 10?), but I haven't really touched on him and Maruca yet because they're more minor characters in canon and I haven't 100% figured out how I want to integrate them. but! they're not just gonna be background characters forever, I've just kinda been approaching each person one or two at a time, and Maruca and Wylie haven't come up in that aspect yet. however, I do have plans to include them more in the near future. so that's something I'm both nervous and excited to write!! i think the wings I've given him are pretty fun, so hopefully you'll like my choice as well!
-- the messages! the long awaited messages have finally been revealed! i hope they were worth that wait--I didn't expect them to attract as much attention as they did, but several people seem very put-off with me (in a joking, fun way) for that one cliffhanger where she almost read them, only to talk to elwin instead. they are riddles!! well, really it's one big riddle split into two parts. they coexist, I suppose. they rely on each other for the answer they point to. i can say tho, that as of right now they are entirely self-sufficient and Sophie shouldn't need any other outside information to figure them out, just those two messages! there may be more secrets and puzzles to figure out that she acquires later tho...who knows !!
-- the ending! the drama of linh lunging towards Sophie at the sight of that dragon scale. was she attacking? was it the dragon scale itself or something else building up? so many questions!! all of which I happen to have the answer to, but that's for you all to find out later! or just to theorize about--I might not explain every single little detail within the writing. but there is definitely more about the dragons that will be touched on later and what they mean storywise for both Marella and Linh (still not saying what her wings are, but there's clearly something going on!!)
I'm very pleased that you liked this chapter!! there was a lot of set up for future drama going on so it's really cool to see what stood out to you and which details you liked. this au just keeps getting longer and longer so i'm honored you've stuck around this long! we are....rapidly approaching 100,000 words. currently at almost 94,000 (including unpublished) and I! don't know how to react to that!
but that's besides the point. thank you for reading and commenting on the au!!
#and we haven't even reached some of the things I want to yet#i have no idea how long this thing will end up being#i just know that when I'm done I could print this thing out and like actually bind it and it would be longer than some of the actual books#on my shelf#oo i could even sign it#have a signed author copy#and write a little note to myself in it#i am very tempted to do that#anyone else want a signed copy? /hj#kotlc#keeper of the lost cities#kotlc wings au#wings au asks#shattered upside down#quil's queries#tiergan-andrin-alenefar#oo also btw nice theme! i saw it changed#long post

Between the Two of Us
Masterlist || Next Chapter
Summary: Jurdan High school AU. Rivals Jude and Cardan are forced to partner up for a history project, and drama ensues. (I know, I know, I suck at descriptions)
Trigger Warnings: I don’t think there’s anything so far, but please let me know if there’s anything I missed!
Chapter 1
Jude Duarte was spending her second period history class plotting a murder. If asked, she might have said she was being purely hypothetical, but she’d be lying. After all, she would be doing the school, and the world, a service by murdering Cardan Greenbriar.
She could already imagine herself receiving a badge of honor, crowds chanting her name for ridding the world of such a nuisance.
An image of his infuriating smirk after he had ‘accidentally’ knocked over her morning coffee popped up in her head. Thankfully, the coffee had cooled down a bit, so she was just left with a coffee stain on her sleeve and a severe lack of caffeine. Regardless, Cardan knew she needed her coffee to function in the morning, and that she had an important physics test to take first period.
She played with the edge of her notebook and contemplated the best method for his murder. Maybe a quick stab and run? No, definitely too painless. It needed to be slow and satisfying. Poison? That seemed like a viable option. She would just have to find a way to order some without it being tracked back to her. Maybe she could slip it into-
“Jude. Are you paying attention?” Her teacher’s voice yanked her out of her thoughts.
“Yeah, yeah I am. Sorry.” Thankfully he couldn’t read her mind. He’d be calling the school therapist, or the police.
“As I was saying,” Mr. Parker continued, “I’m going to pair you guys off for the next assignment, and you will be choosing a social issue to discuss and relate it to a historic event or movement. Show me why the issue is important and what we can do to work towards change. I want you to be creative with this. This will be 20 percent of your final grade, so don’t just write me an essay.”
Jude internally groaned, since that was exactly what she had planned to do. Now she would actually have to spend time on it, because she really needed that 20 percent to keep her A in the class.
“I’m passing out a worksheet with more details. I expect you to have a topic and an outline of your plan for your project by Monday. And before you ask, I’ll be assigning partners.”
Jude’s heart sunk. They couldn’t even choose their partners for a semester long project? That was just cruel. She’d much rather work alone. Hopefully she would just end up with Taryn. She’d rather work with her twin than anyone else in this class.
Mr. Parker started pairing students up at random.
“Taryn, you’ll work with…” Jude perked up. “Locke.” So much for that.
“Jude, you can work with…” He surveyed the classroom until his eyes landed on a quiet kid named Nick. Jude let out a sigh of relief. She barely knew him, but she would be fine working with him.
Before he could say his name, the door to the classroom swung open, and in walked in the last person Jude wanted to see: Cardan Greenbriar, his sharp black hair slightly mussed and his smile gloriously confident as if he hadn’t just missed almost the entirety of the class.
“Mr. Parker. Sorry I’m late,” he said, in his annoyingly smooth voice.
Jude snorted incredulously, and Cardan’s gaze turned to her, a smirk forming on his lips at the coffee stain on her sleeve. She gazed back, unwavering.
Mr. Parker interrupted their stare-off. “I’ll let it slide this time, but don’t expect me to be so forgiving next time.”
He turned back to Jude. “In fact, Cardan, you can be Jude’s partner on the semester project. You’ll be working on it both in and out of class. She’ll fill you in on the details later.”
Both Jude and Cardan looked up in alarm. Since the day they had met, Cardan and Jude had not gotten along. What started off as petty insults had grown into a full-blown rivalry, both of them constantly battling to one-up the other. There was absolutely no way they could work together. And for once, it seemed they were in agreement.
“Wait what? Mr. Parker, what about Nick?” she scrambled right as Cardan choked out, “Me and Jude? You’re joking.”
“Wait, who’s Nick?” Cardan asked unhelpfully. Nick shifted awkwardly in the corner.
She shot Cardan a glare and turned back to Mr. Parker. “I think it would be better for all of us if I partnered with Nick.”
Except Mr. Parker seemed to be on an entirely different wavelength. “Actually,” he looked between them, almost amused, “I think this project would be the perfect opportunity for you guys to work on your teamwork skills. I’m sure you two can work something out.”
Before Jude could protest again, he gave her a stern look. “Go sit down and start brainstorming. I’m not changing my mind. I expect a rough outline by Monday.”
She trudged back to her seat, and Cardan followed.
“Well then, partner, it seems we have a project to plan.”
Jude scoffed. “We’ll just do something easy and get it over with.”
“Mr. Parker mentioned this being a semester long project, Duarte. You’re not getting rid of me that easily,” he smirked.
“Just like this dumb coffee stain. This shirt was expensive, you know.”
Of course, Cardan chose to completely ignore that. “He also said we’ll have to work on it outside of class, so you’ll be seeing me whether you like it are not.”
“Why are you suddenly so excited to work with me?” She narrowed her eyes at him.
The bell rang before he could reply, signaling the end of the class.
Cardan reached underneath her desk for her backpack and handed it to her. “So when should we meet to discuss the outline?”
“What? Why would I want to meet up?” Jude asked, grabbing her backpack from his hands and walking to the door.
He strode into the hallway after her. “If I recall correctly, Mr. Parker said we have to have an outline by Monday, and if I’m not wrong, today is Friday. Which means we have the weekend to figure out our outline, unless you want to fail, or do it by yourself, which I’m completely fine with, by the w-”
“Okay, okay, fine!” She threw her hands up in surrender. “We can meet up Saturday.”
“I’ll come over to your place at 11:00. Sound good?”
“What? Why my place?” But he had already started walking away.
“Take it or leave it, Duarte. I have a lot of other things I could be doing,” he yelled across the hallway, walking backwards towards his locker. His unruly curls flopped perfectly over his forehead, one arm holding the strap of his backpack.
Jude rolled her eyes. “Fine! See you then, Greenbriar. Don’t be late!” she hollered back over her shoulder and disappeared into the throngs of students rushing to their next class.
She felt a couple people staring at her curiously. It was pretty well-known that Jude and Cardan were rivals. They hadn’t exactly kept the antagonism between them to themselves.
And now they would be forced to work together for the rest of the semester. She sighed. She really needed to find some of that poison as soon as possible.
This is my first time posting on here so I hope you enjoyed! I kept on obsessively editing until I finally just gave in and posted it. Let me know what you think :)

OPEN HEART: SECOND YEAR CHAPTER 11
I’ve got a feeling that this one is going to be very long because this chapter had so much in it but it is not like I am complaining.
So this chapter begins straight after the cliffhanger in chapter 10. Ethan being on the other side of the door worried made me so emotional. He seemed so worried about MC. I chose the option to run into Ethan’s arms but obviously I wasn’t able to because my man had hold of the door handle to keep the virus from escaping. The connotations to the corona virus are uncanny. The way that MC knows Ethan that well that she knows when he is hiding something just from the look he is giving her is so sweet and shows how deep their connection is.
One of my favourite things from the chapter is the way we got to experience the assassination attempt from different perspectives. The first perspective was Bryce. He was in the middle of Kyras surgery when he found out about the murder attempt. Eventhough I am not romancing Bryce his reaction was so cute, the genuine worry he showed for his friends was heartwarming. He is so sweet and I understand why a lot of people romance him. The mention of Naveen was so nice but unfortunately he didn’t make an appearance in this chapter, I am hoping that he will make an appearance soon because I love him. I also think that we deserve to see Ethan and Naveens relationship more. On a happier note, we got to see Ines for the first time in a while which was really nice. Hopefully we get to see the other doctors in the hospital a bit more. Moving on the Bryce, I really enjoyed the fact that he carried on the surgery because he knew that is what MC would have wanted. I thought it was a really cool concept to be able to see his reaction to such an intense situation.
The next scene broke my heart. Bobby’s body being rolled out of the room. Like I said in my last post I LOVED his character even from the short time we got to see him. Hopefully, we get to seem some kind of send off for him because he truly deserves it. The thought of his covered up body being pulled away on a stretcher is honestly heartbreaking.
ANGRY ETHAN INCOMING. You can tell that he was ready to kill someone for MC and honestly I wouldn’t be mad about it. The way the 3 doctors entered in hazmat suits was iconic (if I do say so myself). A quick side note: Ethan’s cheekbones look so defined in the suit. That man looks good in everything, it’s unfair on the other males.
I was not expecting the book to shift to Ethans perspective but I LOVED seeing it from his eyes. I liked that the whole hospital came together to help the people involved in the assassination attempt. The senators reaction to Baz and Ethan asking for help was so disrespectful. “Bad day for them”. Like excuse me sir people DIED whilst trying to save you from your crazy assistant, have some respect.
This next scene was one of a few happy scenes in this chapter. It was so interesting to see Sienna and Ethan have a conversation just the 2 of them. I think that their friendship would be a very interesting one. Obviously, out of the 3 options which were: We’re friends; And that’s all I’ll say on the matter; I have feelings for her. I chose I have feelings for her because if I am given a chance to see Ethan open up then I will be taking it. But if any of you chose the other options let me know because I would love to see Siennas reactions. Then he explains that he decided that it would be better for MCs career to distance himself from us. Which is both annoying and adorable. And my poor baby got all emotional, the whole scene was just so cute.
I’m not going to say much about this but thank god that bitch Travis died.
Did anyone else find Rafael’s dishevelled hair kinda attractive or am I just really strange. Anywayss, to make the situation worse Sora shows up. Now listen I have no reason to hate this woman because I’m not romancing Raf however I felt soo angry when she turned up and stole Raf from all the Rafael stans. The disrespect. But what happens later in the chapter makes me very very happy.
All the little interactions between Ethan and MC make my heart melt. The fact he just reaches for our hand and squeezes it, it’s just too much for my little heart to handle. But then to ruin this sweet moment, Raf loses consciousness and at this point I am pretty sure we all thought he was dead. To make this moment even worse, we find out Danny died. When I tell you I cried. I mean I cried. Poor Danny, I still can’t believe it. And Sienna they didn’t even get the chance to be happy together because of her stupid ex. I just can not believe it is his funeral we will be attending. When that chapter comes out I am going to be an emotional wreck.
On a slightly happier note, the Mass Kenmore doctors and the Edenbrook doctors work together to try and find a cure. I knew Tobias had a soft spot for MC. I should hate him but I just can’t maybe it’s the pretty face.
Ethan Ramsey breaking my heart again. He spent the night sat in his hazmat suit just so he could look after us. Tell me this isn’t the most kind-hearted thing ever. “If this is my last night alive, I want to spend it with you”. I’m not even going to explain that quote because I’m pretty sure we all reacted the same way. His regrets. He actually regrets asking us to stay away, he regrets that he wasted so much time. HE WANTED TO HOLD US IN HIS ARMS. I’m tearing up even thinking about it. And forgive me if I am being dramatic but I’m 99% sure that he was about to tell us he loves us. This moment will be going into the Ethan x MC hall of fame. I can’t think about it for too long or I will start crying. Again.
They found an antidote! I never doubted them for a second. I loved how June asked Ethan if he wanted to do the honors. She knows. And then the next morning, Ethan comes in and tells MC to get up. Without the hazmat suit may I add. “You feel a tear tracing down your jaw, but you don’t know which of you it belongs to”. I like to imagine that it was Ethans. Just because it makes me happy. The moment that MC and everyone shares in the elevator is so precious. You can just tell how close they all are and it’s so sweet.
I’m glad that Aurora and MC got the chance to make up as we all know how much she deserves a decent friend. And then MC has the brilliant idea of potentially joining forces with Mass Kenmore to help with state budget cuts. If this ends up being some Seattle Grace Mercy West kinda thing, I’m down. ( Please tell me someone gets the reference).
Sora turns up again but this time I am happy about it. THE BITCH BROKE UP WITH RAF. Anddd Rafael isn’t moving to Brazil. I am really hoping that means Rafael stans get their mans back. We are all rooting for you!!!
All together this chapter was incredible. It would be my favourite chapter but we lost Danny and Bobby in one chapter which breaks my heart. It has to be one of the best written chapters though and the content in just 1 chapter was phenomenal. Let me know your thoughts and opinions.
Thanks for the continued support, it means the world 💛

Hmm, okay uh, I have no idea what I’m doing here but I feel like everyone needs positivity and so here’s a post where I’ll try to give just that.
First off, happy holidays and a good end of the year to everyone who reads this, I am glad that you’re here watching my blog and perhaps even interacting with me! Thank you for everything, whether that is a simple follow or an occasional (perhaps anon) ask, or actual interactions!
Next, I want to say that everyone that I’m seeing on my dash is absolutely amazing and I admire so many of you and am happy whenever I see you around! I am most likely very happy to have you around, especially if we’re mutuals and interacting with one another. I would probably love to talk with each of you more, but I’m just really bad at smalltalk or anything like that so with most people, I simply default to only messaging them (= you) when there’s something as a reason to do so. Sorry for that!
This goes out to everyone reading this: You’re awesome, I’m honored to have you here and interested in my blog, and I hope that your days or weeks or months will be great because you surely deserve it!
And then, I’ll now follow with a kind-of list mentioning a few people that I want to say more to. Which might sound repetitive because I suck at words in these regards, but yeah. Under a cut for length.
If you see this post and weren’t tagged, please don’t be sad or think I don’t value you being around! I can’t tag everyone, and I don’t have the best mind for things like coming up with someone that I forgot in the moments of writing this.
To not start off with the same names all the time, I wrote down the URLs I wanted to include and randomized the order. So don’t think anything by if you’re first or 5th or last on this list! And once more, I’m bad at words, so I’m sorry if this isn’t sounding too great or like it’s similar for each one.
I told myself to not include anyone that isn’t active-ish at the moment, but I made some exceptions to that because I felt that said person needed to be on my list.
@rogueprinceconsort ~ (I read the post you did recently more or less saying you’re leaving, but I wrote this before that post and it would have felt wrong to erase it from here only because of you leaving!) I enjoy our interactions a lot! They feel like they actually develop a story, which I can’t say for ALL my interactions but definitely for each one that we have going! Which is really cool! You’re one of the only few people where I have the chance to play around with different verses too (well, or at least one different verse, since our other two ongoing interactions are in the mainverses of my muses, but still), and you’re one of the few giving one of my OC-sideblogs a chance as well, and, just, I really am so thankful for it and happy to have you as a mutual!
@untouchable-lightning ~ You aren’t here at the moment, so let me just start this by saying that I hope that things will get better for you again soon! It’s a lot of fun to interact with you and I think you’re a good writer and I’m very happy for our interactions! They are always fun! I did not often yet get the chance to do this other RP-style that I do (the ‘choose-your-option’ one) and you are one of those that allowed me to play through it, and you also interact/ed with my sideblogs too, so a big thank you for that! Our threads also often last nicely long, which is absolutely amazing since it’s a big rarity these days, too. You’re great, and I’m happy that we’re mutuals and interaction-partners!
@miasmarp ~ We’re more or less only starting out interacting and talking and anything basically, but I felt like I just absolutely had to include you because I HAVE A CHANCE TO PLAY ONE OF MY OTHER (non-blog-having, not even an info page or anything outside of one or two ooc posts about them) OCS with you and that’s just like the first time at all (not counting if I do include them as minor appearances in other things, though even there it has only happened one single time so far iirc), and that is just so much fun and just thank you! You’re really cool and I’m happy that we’re mutuals!
@karaoftomorrow (or @yourfavoritesidekick if you’d prefer I tag your main) ~ It’s so wonderful to write with you! It feels like we’re developing stuff in our things really well, and I really like to read what appears from you on my dash! Talking with you is very nice too, and I’m always really happy whenever I see you in my notifications or IMs or wherever! I’m very glad to have you as mutual and am really happy about any and all of our interactions!
@skymade / @siriseen or maybe I should tag one of your other blogs instead but those are the first two I usually think of and I don’t wanna tag more than two blogs for one person xD ~ Sooooooooo awesome! You have so many characters, which all are wonderful as far as I can tell, and I love our interactions so much! I’m always really looking forward to the next reply I get from one of our things, and talking to you is always a delight and I’m so so happy that we somehow found each other! Or well, I guess you found me because if I remember right you followed me first, but yes! Thank you for writing with pretty much all of my characters, you’re very cool, I absolutely love the connections our muses get (especially those where they know one another at a younger time and then ‘now’ meet again too - how cool is that?) and it’s always a joy to see you on my dash!
@azarathian ~ We haven’t really done or spoken that much together yet (or at least I assume we didn’t? There was your old blog but I don’t think we really spoke there, much less did threads or the likes? Sorry if I’m wrong though xD), but I’m so very glad we started! I admire your writing and the thoughts you put into Raven and I think you’re great! Our threads are incredibly entertaining and it’s so awesome to put more story into the situations of or between the episodes of the cartoon, and yes, I’m just very very thankful that we got together somehow and I’m excited for how our threads - and potential future ones - will develop!
@nvertoolate or if I should tag your currently more active sideblog @bloomingtalent ~ It is so absolutely amazing that one of my first mutuals, friends, or however I should call it, still is active on here as well! With most people on here, it’s sadly the case that they’re gone again sooner than later, so it’s especially great that we are still both here! I think I’ve said multiple times before that I don’t think I would even have stayed on tumblr if you hadn’t been around and interacting with me so I won’t go into detail about that yet again, but, yes, I absolutely love our interactions when we do them, and while I don’t know much about Naruto so we don’t really interact that much on your sideblog, I’m still so very happy to have you around and as my mutual! I’m so thankful for you and that we got to interact - and still do! Thank you!
@sewn-cutie ~ Our interactions are always so wonderfully adorable and cute! I love the connection between Starfire and Clementine, and it’s a lot of fun to write any of our things! I’m very happy when I hear from you in an OOC-y way too, like when you reply to one of my posts or in the IMs or whereever! I’m absolutely convinced that you are a great person, and I am delighted that we are mutuals and can interact so nicely!
@legaxies ~ I wasn’t sure if maybe I shouldn’t include you since from how much I can tell it seems you are at the moment more focused onto that theme-sideblog you have and I told myself to not include those that aren’t really active at the moment - but I felt like I had to! I wanted to say that I’m really happy for the things we started, and that I have a lot of fun talking to you when we do! I’m very much enjoying the potential relationships we have started on, and I look forward to hopefully continuing them in some way eventually! (This of course is not meant as pushing you to work on replies or whatever, please don’t understand me wrong here; I just mean this in a way of, if we do get to continue it - if not that’s totally fine too!) You’re doing great with any of your characters (as much as I can judge with not that much knowledge), and I’m happy that we’re mutuals! It’s a joy to interact with you, so, thank you!
@featherchan ~ You’re interacting with me, or did in the past, on pretty much all my muses (I think not on Starlight? But outside of that on all I think), and that means a lot to me! We have some really cool plots going, and you joined in on that event-au-thing I did all that time back too, so that’s very great, and I wanted to say thanks! Our interactions are always fun and I’m happy to write with and talk to you!
@thedoctornumber11 ~ Throughout my time being here, you’re pretty much the only one of the world of Doctor Who that I got interactions going with (I think there was someone on Wildfire once too, but not for very long iirc), and I really enjoy that! I wanted to include you here too because I wanted to say that I’m very very grateful for the nice words or explanations you sometimes throw onto my posts, and for the things you send in to me, and yes just for all of it! Thank you!
@flashgotthis ~ I love our things so much! All the interactions that we did so far were really really really cool, still are, and they often last really long too, and it’s just absolutely wonderful! You’re also one of those that aren’t only talented writers, but also really great artists, and I admire that skill so much! I’m delighted that we are mutuals and interaction-partners, and I look forward to what’s still to come! You’re amazing!
@graceful-cure-swan / @rosecoloredmuses (mostly tagging your sideblog as well to give it, like, some sort of indirect promoing here) ~ You are great! I feel so bad for all the many things you sent me whereas I barely ever send you (or anyone else, for that matter) anything at all, but, I’m also really grateful that you do it, so - thank you! I’m enjoying our interactions very much, I think that both Tsubasa and your other characters are done really well (even if I don’t know that much about each of them or can compare them to their canon versions much), and you’re a lot of fun to interact with! You also give my sideblogs and OCs a chance too, which means very much to me too, so yeah, I’m very grateful to have you as my mutual!
@eterniita ~ We’ve been interacting throughout a few of your blogs already, and I enjoy our interactions! I think you put a lot of love and thought into your characters, and they are great, and our threads are a lot of fun! I haven’t yet checked out your remade blog of your canons again, but I intend to and most likely follow you there again, too! I hope we will still get to more wonderful interactions!
@merveiilles ~ I’m so happy that we’re interacting! I love our threads a lot and I’m enjoying every reply that I get or write! You have a lot of characters and it’s really impressive that you do them (as far as I can tell/know them) so well! Your art, that you occasionally post, is also really really amazing and it’s very wonderful that you are so talented! I am very thankful for the nice words that you put onto my posts every now and then, and I am delighted by the threads and connections we are having between our muses!
@symbioteburnout ~ I don’t feel like I can say very much here (yet), but I wanted to include you too! I enjoy the things that we got going so far, and going from what I see from you about her I think Andi is a interesting character! It’s always wonderful to me, when people put the effort into characters who might not get as much time to shine in canon as others. Thanks for replying to my opens every now and then, and just in general for being my mutual and interacting with me!
@titansandothersrp / @robynrpmain (Now I’m getting frustrated at tumblr again for not letting me tag your main) ~ You are really cool! You’re a great artist, I love to see your work, and our threads are very entertaining! I feel like you’re doing very well in giving the characters you play as more story, more... I don’t know the right word here. Just, that you make them ‘more’, and that’s a really awesome thing. And yeah, like said, you also do art which I think looks really good, and I just absolutely admire people who can do art so well. Thanks for being mutuals and interacting with me!
---
So, and as a nice little bit of words at the end, I guess~ I’m very honored by anyone of you who’s actually interested in me and my writing, I’m thankful and glad to have you around, and I’m looking forward to more amazing things to come in the future with all of you!

Through the Rising Tide

Thank you so much for the beautiful graphic @itsfabianadocarmo!
Summary: The Jones brothers are polar opposites. Liam's the safe and honorable one, straight-laced and straight as an arrow. The good son.
Killian's the dangerous one, the bad boy with tats, leather jackets, a motorcycle and a questionable past.
The only things they have in common are panty-melting sea-blue eyes, the flat they share in Storybrooke and a rare blood type.
Oh, and apparently their taste in women.
Or rather, one woman.
Feisty.
Blonde.
Gorgeous.
Green-eyed Goddess.
Killian saw her first, but she chose his brother—the nice guy over the playboy. And even though she’s dating his brother, it doesn't make him want her any less. If that's not bad enough, she moves in with them and he has to pretend he's not completely in love with her. His life could not get any worse…
Until Liam dies in a tragic motorcycle accident.
Leaving each of them with one half of a broken heart.
Now Killian and Emma are left helping each other pick up the pieces.
Just as they're beginning to learn how to live in their new reality, another riptide pulls them further into the deep end when she finds out she's pregnant with Liam's baby.
Notes: Because I’ve received some comments saying that this fic is “inscestuous” EVEN THOUGH I CLEARLY SAID IF YOU ARE UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THIS IDEA TO HIT THE BACK BUTTON, I feel like I have to repeat myself and make it louder and clearer for the people in the back: If you're not comfortable with Emma and Killian’s relationship after she is with Liam, or if the idea of Emma being with both brothers at different times makes you squick or is cringy to you, THIS FIC IS NOT FOR YOU AND YOU ARE NOT INVITED TO READ SO HIT THE BACK BUTTON RIGHT NOW. I repeat, if the storyline makes you squick or is cringy to you, THIS FIC IS NOT FOR YOU AND YOU ARE NOT INVITED TO READ SO HIT THE BACK BUTTON RIGHT NOW! For everyone else, please enjoy!
Thank you @ultraluckycatnd for looking it over!
This story was inspired by Baby Mine by Kennedy Fox, and I loved the book so much and thought it was very much underrated. I’ve wanted to write a fic like this for a long time now because it’s one of my favorite tropes, but after I read that book, I just had to write my own take. Also, I made this post about a Baby Yodarita drink last year when it was trending and since the beginning of this story starts one year prior, 2019 and since Killian is a bartender, it was a perfect way to include the prompt.
The title comes from the lyrics of the song, Lay By Me by Ruben. The particular line goes like this:
"I hope you know through the rising tide That I'll be here and you can lay by my side"
If you've never heard it, I recommend giving it a listen. It's an amazing song and very fitting for this story.

P.S. In case you're unable to read the shoulder tattoo in the picture above and are wondering what it says—
"There is no happiness without tears
No life without death
And no true love without heartbreak"
Rated: Explicit for smut (including sexual fantasies, masturbation, implied and detailed sex, etc.) and language (lots of F-bombs).

One Week Later…
“I’m so sorry I'm late,” Ruby apologizes profusely as she scurries across the bar and rounds the counter. “Please don't fire me,” she pleads, her words full of panic. “I promise it won't happen again.”
Killian arches a brow, thoroughly amused as he watches her haul ass. Is Ruby Red actually worried about losing her job?
Well, this is a first.
Liam looks up from the paperwork in his hands and actually smiles as he waves off her words. “Don’t worry about it, Rubes.” As he turns around and casually heads into his office... he’s fucking whistling.
What the hell?
Killian and Ruby exchange bewildered looks.
This isn't the only time Liam has left them perplexed lately. He's been easy on his staff all week.
The question is, what the fuck changed?
There can only be one explanation—Liam met someone. He knows this because Liam was like this when he met his last girlfriend. Very lenient and cheerful and whistling all the time. But last time, he told Killian about her. So why hasn’t he said anything this time?
“I think your brother is broken,” Ruby remarks.
Killian chuckles and tosses the bar cloth over his shoulder. “Or pussy whipped.”
Ruby furrows her brows. “I thought you said him not getting laid wasn’t the issue?”
Killian shakes his head. “No, him not getting laid is why he’s in such a good mood.”
Ruby’s even more perplexed, not understanding how being sex-deprived could possibly put Liam in a good mood. “Huh?”
Killian smirks. “He met some lass, and she hasn’t put out yet. Which, being the hopeless romantic Liam is, he’s fine with, but that doesn’t mean he’s not hoping to get some.”
Ruby rolls her eyes and walks away to begin her shift. “Why are men so fucking complicated?”
He laughs at her words and the thought of Liam being so nice this entire week over some lass he’s smitten with. Killan’s happy for Liam, but to be honest, his brother's happiness makes him kind of bummed. Because it's reminding him of how unhappy he is. He’s been unhappy and kind of pissed all week. Ever since last Friday, when that angel never came back.
He was so enchanted by her.
He keeps asking himself why she never returned to him. He’d thought they’d had a connection, he’d thought they’d shared a moment. He’d thought she’d felt the same attraction for him he’d felt for her. Was she just leading him on? Or did she find some other bloke who gave her more attention than he could that night?
He wishes he knew.
Killian suffers through another evening without seeing Emma enter the bar. He keeps eyeing the door, keeps waiting for her to appear and approach him to explain herself, to supply him with some sort of explanation. But she never shows.
The next night is no different. Same agony, different day. But this time, his brother isn't here to poke fun at and distract him from the blonde bombshell weighing on his mind.
The dim lamp light cascades over the living room when Killian trudges through the door after three a.m. Tossing his keys on an end table, he chucks off his jacket and looks down, seeing Liam's boots laying haphazardly on the floor by the door. Which is odd because he's always yelling at Killian for leaving his shoes on the floor instead of storing them in the closet.
Killian shakes off the thought and throws his jacket over a chair before heading to the bathroom. He always needs time to wind down after his shift, but tonight, he just wants to sleep and hopefully forget about Emma for a few goddamn hours. But in order for him to do that, there’s something he must do, first.
He’s been unbearably hard all week from thinking about her. So as soon as he feels the hot water spraying his skin under the shower head, he wraps his hand around his cock and strokes himself, his stiff, wet flesh easily slipping through his fist. He can’t help it, though. Emma had stirred something inside him. Something he’s never felt before.
He knows this is a bad idea, he knows he shouldn’t get this worked up over someone he’s only spoken to once. But at the moment, he’s too hard and his head’s too foggy with lust, his blood running too hot when he remembers how she’d smiled at him, how she’d bitten her bottom lip, remembers her soft curves and how fantastic her ass looked in those tight jeans and how that sexy, pink lace had clung to her breasts. He groans, needing so desperately to ease the tension before he goes completely mad.
Pressing his free hand against the shower wall as the hot stream cascades down his back, he pumps himself harder and faster, grunting as he imagines her pretty lips on his mouth... on his chest... on his stomach... wrapped around his cock. Imagines her humming around him and growing wet from tasting him in her mouth. Imagines what her soft, silky tongue would feel like on him. Imagaines how good her pussy would feel around his cock. Imagines her on top of him, naked and writhing, her skin shimmering in the moonlight as she rode his dick.
He can almost hear her moans and short pants in his ear as he imagines taking her breasts in his hands, squeezing firmly while he fucked her good and hard until she was screaming out his name, her walls squeezing him tight as she came all over his cock.
His body goes rigid, a rough, drawn-out groan rippling through his throat as Emma's name tumbles from his lips. Seconds later, his hand and stomach are a hot, sticky mess as his hand stills around his pulsing length. His heart is pounding and his breath is ragged as he watches the aftermath of what he’d done disappear into the drain.
After he washes the night away from his body (and feels the urge to touch himself again when he lathers his balls and softened cock with soap) he rinses off and steps out of the shower without giving in to more temptation. He dries off with a towel, pulls on a pair of boxers and heads to bed, feeling no shame for what he'd done in the shower. For jerking off to visions of Emma, who’s almost a complete stranger to him. He knows he should feel some kind of guilt or remorse, but right now he can’t find it within himself to feel sorry. He needed that.
And maybe now, he’ll be able to stop thinking about her long enough to get some shut-eye.
But it doesn’t bloody work.
He tosses and turns, still unable to rid her from his mind, and he’s not even sure why. Well, actually he is. She was gorgeous and sexy and playful, and he’d wanted to get to know her. He’d wanted to know everything about her. But apparently, she hadn’t wanted the same from him.
He’d waited over an hour for her at the bar the night he met her, and would've waited longer if not for Tina approaching him and chatting his ears off. He'd wanted to either ignore her or tell her he wasn't interested, but he didn't want to be a jackass. And when Emma never showed, he thought about taking Tina up on her offer and bringing her home in an attempt to forget about Emma. To forget about her smile or her eyes or the memorizing light surrounding her or the way she winked at him as she walked away from the bar.
But he knew it wouldn’t be fair to Tina to be with her while thinking of another woman. He may be a dashing rapscallion, but he's still a gentleman.
He’d seen Emma with Mary Margaret and Ruby, and he was half tempted to cash in a favor from Ruby and have her obtain Emma's number, and maybe he should've. But Emma obviously made her choice and he's afraid she would be creeped out by his advances. So he never did.
Just as Killian is drifting off to sleep, something yanks him awake, but it's not thoughts of her. Rather it's…
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
Moaning.
Thump.
Cursing.
Thump.
Grunting.
Thump.
What the actual fuck?
Liam knew Killian had a late shift tonight and yet he decided this was the night to get some action from the mysterious woman he's been seeing?
Killian even asked Liam about her, but he completely denied it.
“Not seeing anyone, my arse,” Killian grumbles, but even though the walls are paper-thin, he's pretty sure he can't be heard over the sounds.
“Yes! Yes! Yes! Oh God, yes!”
Bloody hell.
The walls are so thin, he can hear every pant, every moan, he can hear it every goddamn time the headboard slams against the wall.
“Fuck!”
Why now? Why wait until four in the fucking morning? Or have they been at it all night?
Killian groans and grabs his headphones from his nightstand. He slips them on and plays some music, turning up the volume. He closes his eyes, trying to erase everything from his mind, but he can actually feel the wall rattling and he’s surprised the bed doesn’t come crashing through the drywall.
He curses and grabs the pillow next to him, covering his face with it. He wants to pound on the wall and tell them to shut the fuck up, but he knows he deserves it. He's done the same thing, he's brought a lass to his bed while Liam was in his room, forced to listen to every sound.
Besides, part of him wants to high-five Liam for pleasuring this woman so well and at such a late hour. He wonders how many hours they've been at it.
He's kind of proud of Liam, actually. He just hopes this one doesn't cheat on Liam like the last girlfriend did.
“Bloody… fucking... hell!” Liam groans loudly.
With one final hard thud, the noises cease.
Finally.
Killian removes the pillow from his face and is soon able to get some sleep, but only for a few hours before he's awake again.
Unable to fall back asleep, he wipes the sleep from his eyes and drags himself out of bed.
Coffee.
He's not sure if the smell wafting through the apartment is due to lack of sleep or if Liam got up and made a pot. Which would surprise him, considering all the amorous activities he engaged in last night. Killian would think he’d be exhausted after that.
As he nears the kitchen, he can hear pots and pans clanking around, so he knows he's not imagining the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filling the flat.
When he enters the kitchen, his eyes are immediately drawn to the coffee pot on the bar counter, and it almost appears to be glowing. “Thanks for making coffee,” he says appreciatively, opening the cupboard door to grab a mug. Though he's not sure he should be very appreciative, considering Liam's to blame for Killian's lack of sleep.
He and the little vixen he had in his bed last night.
“I barely got four hours of sleep, thanks to all the banging and screaming coming from your—” His words are frozen in midair when he turns around and sees the nearly bare ass sticking out from the refrigerator door.
That's definitely not Liam.
His girlfriend, rather.
And she’s dressed in nothing but a pair of pink laced panties and one of Liam’s oversized dress shirts.
Killian smirks and fills his cup before turning around and leaning against the counter, admiring the view while he sips his coffee. There's a half-naked blonde pillaging his refrigerator, but right now he couldn't give a fuck.
He’s too busy appreciating the view, because bloody hell, she has a dee-lectable ass.
Liam did good.
It’s a good thing she’s already been claimed by his brother because otherwise, she’d be in big trouble. Or, rather, not a good thing. It’s quite a shame, actually.
“What was that, babe?” The sweetest voice pulls Killian from his thoughts as she rises, carrying eggs and milk in her hands. She sets the items on the counter next to the refrigerator and turns around.
He lifts his gaze from her pretty ass, and when his eyes meet hers... his jaw drops to the fucking floor, his face paling. He almost drops his coffee mug.
You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.
He has to blink a few times to make sure it’s actually her. But maybe, just maybe, he’s still sleeping, and this is all just a terrible dream.
“Killian?”
Nope. He’s wide awake.
And the woman standing in his kitchen, wearing nothing but panties and a shirt that falls just past her butt is real. And just like that, Killian’s hopes of being with this woman shatter into a million pieces.
“Emma?”
There’s a shocked expression plastered on her face, but he doubts she’s more surprised than he is right now. He had never suspected the woman making all those noises in his brother’s room to possibly be the same woman he met in the bar last week. The same woman who’s been on the forefront of his mind ever since. The same woman he’d jerked off to thoughts of only a few hours ago.
“You two know each other?” Liam’s voice sounds through the kitchen when he enters and glances between them, seeing the recognition flickering in their eyes. He walks across the kitchen and pulls a half-naked Emma into his arms, pressing her body against his. He hadn’t even bothered to throw on any clothes either and is only in his boxers.
“We met at the bar last week,” Emma answers, because apparently Killian lost his ability to speak. His brain is too occupied with the fact that Liam and Emma are together, their hands all over each other as she’s semi-straddling his thigh.
Well, fuck.
He just doesn't understand how this happened. How had his charm not worked on Emma like it had worked on so many women before her? And he was actually genuine with her. He wasn’t charming her just so he could get into her pants. He actually wanted to get to know her. Besides, even if he ended up taking her back to his flat, he had a feeling he wouldn’t be able to have just one night with her.
“Is that so?”
“Yeah, the same night you and I met. He made me a Baby Yodarita.”
“A Baby Yodarita?” Liam parrots, amusement obvious in his tone.
“Yeah, I made it up based on Baby Yoda, but Killian was happy to accept the challenge.”
Liam chuckles and takes her chin in his hand, bringing her lips to his. “Of course he did. He’ll do anything for tips.”
Killian balls his hand into a fist. He didn’t make her that special drink to get a tip from her. He didn’t even charge her for the damn drink.
He wants to strangle his brother for saying that and for having his paws all over Emma, but he’s still trying to process what she’d said about meeting him the same night she met Liam. When had she met him? They weren’t there at the same time, so how did they meet? It must have been outside the bar.
Wait a bloody minute.
Killian’s eyes widen when something occurs to him. Was Liam the reason Emma never came back to him that night?
Emma’s eyes dart between them when something occurs to her too. “So, this is your brother?” she asks Liam. “You said you lived with him.”
“Aye. And I’m sorry if he startled you. I thought he’d still be sleeping.”
“It’s fine,” she assures, waving off his apology.
Wait a damn minute. Liam’s sorry she was startled? Killian was the one kept up by all the noises coming from Liam’s room.
“And what, I don’t get an apology for being kept awake by all the noises? You do realize I can hear everything through the paper-thin walls, right?”
Liam and Emma exchange blushing smiles, but neither of them seems apologetic. “Sorry, we couldn’t keep our hands off each other last night,” Liam comments, brushing his nose against hers. She smirks, displaying her total agreement as she caresses his cheek.
Killian staves off a groan of disapproval. “I gathered that,” he says casually, trying not to sound completely gutted.
“So you two must’ve met while I went on that wild goose chase David sent me on,” Liam guesses, thankfully changing the subject.
“Wild goose chase?” Killian inquires, furrowing his brows in confusion.
“Aye, it’s a funny story, actually.” Liam chuckles, his eyes glued to Emma as she smiles at him. He finally tears his gaze from her to look at Killian as he wraps his big hands around her little waist. “So before I left to run those errands I told you about, I received a text from David asking me to look after his little sister who was bar-hopping with his wife. So I get there and she’s nowhere to be found. Well, when I returned, I ran into this stunning angel just outside the bar,” he says, squeezing her hip and pulling her closer. “Well, I quickly find out, she’s David’s sister.”
“Oh,” Killian utters, still shocked by this entire set of circumstances. It made him forget little details, like the fact that Mary Margaret is her sister-in-law and therefore David is her brother.
“Anyway, she missed her Uber, and after we started talking, I offered her a ride home,” he looks at her again, with googly eyes and a blushing smile as she gazes at him with the same love-struck expression on her face, “and the rest was history.”
“Wait, so that’s why you left the bar that night? To spy on Emma?” Killian glances at her, a little pissed she’d put up with Liam stalking her. “And you weren’t pissed at him for that?”
“A little, at first,” she admits shyly, “but more so at my brother for asking him to spy on me in the first place. Besides, look at this face,” she says, cupping Liam’s chin in her hand as she smiles at him. “How could I possibly be mad at a face like this?” He grins and leans in, capturing her lips with his.
Killian wants to ask her exactly when she left the bar, but he’s afraid of what the answer would be. He stares at Liam, wondering why he never mentioned her. “So, why did you tell me you weren’t seeing anyone when I asked you about it?” Okay, and part of him is hoping to get him in trouble with her.
But instead of looking pissed, guilt flashes in her eyes. Like she had something to do with it.
Liam eyes his brother apologetically. “We didn’t want to tell anyone about us yet. David’s my good mate and we don’t know exactly how he’ll take the news when he finds out about us. He’s very protective of Emma, if you couldn’t already tell. So we haven’t told anyone.”
Killian scoffs. “Since when haven’t you been able to tell me anything without worrying I wouldn’t keep your secret?”
“I know, I know. I should’ve just told you. I shouldn’t have lied.” He gazes at Emma again, a little more serious now as he caresses her cheek. “But I could tell right away Emma was something special, and I didn’t want to do anything to jeopardize my chance to be with her.” Emma blushes and smiles as he rests his forehead against hers. “ Very special,” he emphasizes, brushing his thumb over her button lip.
She presses a palm against his chest. “I could tell you were, too,” she says sweetly, as though they’re having an intimate conversation. As though Killian’s not even in the room, inwardly dying inside. If only Liam knew what this was doing to his brother.
“Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me,” Killian assures them, trying to disguise how unnerved he is that she picked Liam over him.
Liam pulls his head back suddenly, as though he just realized something. “Wait, you mean to tell me you saw Killian first that night?” he asks her.
“Yeah… why?” she asks dubiously.
A slow smile crawls over his lips as he looks at Killian. “Because, I think this is the first time someone has actually seen my little brother first and ended up with me, instead of the other way around.”
Emma cocks a brow, intrigued by this. “Really?”
Killian doesn’t even bother to correct Liam for calling him little brother. He’s too busy seeing red.
“Aye. Most women prefer the bad boy type over the nice guy,” he says with a smile. “But not you. If I didn't know you were a keeper then, I sure as hell do now.” He presses the pad of his thumb against her chin and kisses her forehead.
Killian thinks he’s going to be sick as he watches them.
This is all wrong.
It was supposed to be him taking Emma home. It was supposed to be him bringing her pleasure over and over again until both of them were sweaty and exhausted and yet still couldn't keep their hands off each other. It was supposed to be him standing in the kitchen, wrapping his arms around her half-naked body and kissing her shamelessly as his brother watched.
It wasn’t supposed to be the other way around.
Killian can’t get over the irony of it all. The irony of him jerking off and fantasizing about the same goddamn woman Liam was having sex with right down the hall.
It makes him wonder how many times Liam's been in this exact position. How many times had he laid his eyes on a lass, only to come home and find her in his brother’s arms? How many times had Liam touched himself with thoughts of a woman in his head before finding out she was messing around with his brother?
He’s not sure; all he knows is karma's a bitch.
“I should probably start breakfast before the milk and eggs get spoiled,” Emma says when she notices the items are still on the counter.
“I told you I would make breakfast,” Liam says as she saunters over to crack open the egg carton.
She smirks at him over her shoulder. “You already gave me a hot breakfast in bed.”
Liam quirks a brow. “When would I have done that? You were in my arms until you got up to use the bathroom.”
Killian takes a sip of his coffee, grimacing as he tries to block out their conversation. They’ve only been together for a week and already act like a fucking married couple.
“True, but before that, you gave me some delicious sausage.”
Killian chokes on his coffee and spits it out. Do they not realize he’s still in the room?”
“What the bloody hell, Killian?” Liam upbraids as he inspects Emma to make sure none of the coffee spilled on her.
But Killian only got it on himself. He curtly slams the coffee mug on the counter and walks across the kitchen with clenched teeth, ripping a piece of paper towel from the roll to wipe off the coffee he spit out.
“Sorry,” Emma says after realizing she probably shouldn’t have made the sausage remark with Liam’s brother in the room.
You think?
“Why are you sorry? I’m not,” Liam murmurs against her ear and grabs her hips from behind as she tries to crack some eggs into a bowl. “You can taste my sausage anytime.”
She looks over at him and smirks. “Hmmm, I like the idea of that. But right now, it’s my turn to make you breakfast.”
Liam growls and spins her around, picking her up like she weighs nothing, and placing her on the counter. He buries his face in the crook of her neck, gently biting her there, his words muffled against her skin as his hands slide up her thighs and under the hem of the shirt she’s wearing. “I can think of something else I’d rather eat.”
That’s it.
Killian’s going to vomit. He tosses the paper towel into the trash and storms out of the kitchen, his face probably green from how ill he’s feeling right now.
How the bloody hell did this happen?
“Killian.”
The sound of his name coming from her lips causes his jaw to clench. She and Liam seemed so lovesick, Killian’s surprised they were able to tear themselves away from each other for two bloody seconds.
When he spins around to face her, Emma’s holding his mug in her hands, her eyes flickering with apology. “You forgot this,” she says, offering it to him.
“Thanks but I can’t stomach anything at the moment,” he grumbles, sounding angrier than he had intended.
“I’m sorry,” she murmurs, probably so Liam can't hear her. “I didn’t know he was your brother.”
“There’s nothing to be sorry for. It’s not like you and I were ever together,” he says bitterly as his eyes drop to the mug she’s holding. “On second thought, I’ll take that.” He grabs the coffee from Emma’s hands and gulps it down, since it’s no longer hot. Emma doesn’t speak as she stares at him, probably unsure of what to say.
Killian lowers the mug and gives her a hard look before turning around and heading to the bathroom, deciding he needs another shower. After what he’d done in the shower while thinking of Emma and then after what he’d witnessed and heard in the kitchen, he feels filthy all over, almost as if he’s covered in slimy worms. He has to scrub himself down since he can’t scrub away the images that will now be permanently burned in his brain.
The images of Liam and the girl Killian wants but knows he can never have.
Fuck… my… life.

Author's Note: I'm finally back! Sorry to make you all wait so long, but I really wanted to get this project out by December, so...here it is. I hope you all enjoy! (Also, apologies in advance for any bad formatting: Tumblr is being very uncooperative right now.)
...
It was, officially, a ‘lazy day’.
Team Dark was spending time at home, resting after the holiday frenzy of yesterday. Rouge had suddenly realized that they hadn’t decorated yet and that they all still needed to come up with present ideas for Team Sonic, so she and Shadow had spent the entire time in a sort of constant state of panic. Omega tried his best to help them, intermixed with a lot of gloating about his perfect memory and how he’d remembered to get a gift already.
He’d gotten punched halfway across the room for that one.
Now, a certain striped hedgehog was relaxing in his room, reading a book quietly. Until (of course) the peaceful silence was shattered by a loud blaring noise that sent him racing out the door and halfway down the stairs to their common area. Rouge was standing in the middle of the room, and shouted out to him, “Shadow! Come down here, I’m calling a group meeting!” Shadow winced and massaged one of his ears, his quills relaxing from their startled position as he walked over and sat down on the couch. He glowered at Rouge, who stood in front of him with the ‘team meeting airhorn’ still in hand. Despite his stare, she was still poised to blast again if Omega didn’t show up soon. Thankfully for Shadow’s hearing, Omega appeared quickly, albeit with much complaining about being dragged away from his targeting system calibrations. “Alright, Rouge, what’s all this about?” the hedgehog sighed, leaning forward and resting his arms on his knees. She smiled cautiously at the two of them. “Before I say anything, I want you guys to know that this offer is optional. If it’s too much for you, you don’t have to say yes.” Omega spun one of his hands around, making a slight whirring noise. “Please continue.” Rouge sat down on one end of the aforementioned couch, sinking into the cushions with a sigh. “Okay. Let’s see. I haven’t...ever talked to you guys about my family before, have I?” “I do not recall you initiating any such conversation.” Omega answered, at the same time as Shadow replied, “No….?” “Well. Considering everything...I kind of figured it’s about time I told you all my story.” She smiled again, but it was a little bittersweet. Shadow inched closer, caution sparking in his eyes. “Where to start...I mean, I have a mom, two sisters, a stepsister, a stepbrother, and a stepmom. And a dad too, I guess?” “You guess?” Omega asked skeptically, before being shot a fierce ‘no questions‘ look by Shadow. “It’s alright, hon.” Rouge said, putting a hand on the hedgehog’s shoulder. “I guess I should really start at the beginning.” “My dad was a cat and my mom is a bat- obviously, hah. My two officially related sisters are twins, three years younger than me. Right before they were born, though...my dad left. He took all the cash with him when he did. And, well. Left Mom with a barely-paid-for apartment and without a job. “We, uh. Heard later that he ran off with some lady from his job. Mom...didn’t take it too well.” Shadow’s eyes widened and Omega smacked a fist into one hand. “Rouge. Is your father, hypothetically, good at withstanding high-powered attacks from a hypothetical extremely destructive robot?” She snickered. “No, he’s not. But please don’t actually fight him, alright?” His hands crackling with chaos energy, Shadow hissed, “Rouge...I think I like his plan.” He bared his fangs as he spoke, looking furious. Rouge smiled gratefully at the both of them. “Thanks, guys, but he’s really not even worth your time. Let me keep going, okay?” Omega sat back, irritated at the lack of pulverizing Rouge’s father going on, and Shadow, reluctantly, allowed his chaos energy to dissipate. “Yeah, so he left, and that was a whole thing. Mom worked hard for us, but it just...wasn’t enough to make ends meet. I started my career of...relieving people of their fancy objects-” here she winked- “at the age of eleven to help out. Dropped out of school after eighth grade to start full-time thievery once I turned fourteen, and, yeah. I had to leave home, otherwise Mom and the twins would’ve been in real trouble. “I got busted after two whole years by the one and only Guardian Units of Nations- not a bad streak, if I do say so myself. Then, I started working for G.U.N. to pay my dues to society, and...you all know the rest after that. I still kept sending checks back to the family, though.” Shadow and Omega were both looking at her with unreadable expressions at this point. “I’ve stopped doing that now, actually, since Mom’s been with her girlfriend for like a year now. She’s dating this super sweet cardinal who gives her basically everything my dad never did- her name’s Camellia and she has two little kids from her last marriage. She’s been so good for Mom, honestly.
“I know it’s usually supposed to be this whole thing where the stepdaughter hates the stepmom, but that’s not for me. When I got the news, I was just like ‘Oh, so that’s why I’m pan’ - yeah, really- and now I’m cool with it. Plus, I’ve got two new little sibs, so it’s all fine.
“So...yeah. That’s my family.”
Shadow sat there in deep thought for a minute. “Your family sounds nice...I’m just sorry you had to go through all of that.” he said, when he finally spoke up.
“Yeah, they’re great- and it’s okay. I mean, if it wasn’t for all that, I never would’ve found you guys!” she said, looking much brighter now. “Now that you know about them, you wanna see some pictures?”
“Certainly.” Omega said, curious to see these people that Rouge cared for so deeply.
“Okay, so...these are my twin sisters, Midori and Neela.” she said, showing a social media post of two identical coffee-colored cats posing for a selfie. Even their fur markings were exactly the same, as well as the shade of their golden eyes. Despite the fact that they were felines, something about them looked an awful lot like Rouge. The shape of their faces, perhaps?
“And here’s Camellia and Mom.” A picture came up of a beaming, moderately curvy white bat and an equally overjoyed cardinal with their arms around each other in front of a beautiful sunset.
“This is Jade, my stepsister, she’s ten-” Rouge showed an image of a young goldfinch playing soccer, kicking the ball fiercely. “-and that’s Spark, my stepbrother.” A small cardinal with a grin as broad as his mother’s was swinging on a swing at a playground, his eyes bright with the excitement of childhood.
Shadow smiled, looking as though he were a mixture of genuine happiness and a little ever-present pain. “They all look wonderful, Rouge. I’m...honored...that you felt like you could show us this.”
“That wasn’t so bad, honestly- I’ve been wanting to figure out how to do that for a while.” the bat said. “This is going to be the hard part.”
Two pairs of eyes watched her expectantly.
She exhaled. “Every year...my family has this big, three-day Wintersweek party. And when I say big, I mean seven out of my mom’s nine siblings and their spouses and kids. Like, more than twenty guests big.”
Omega interrupted her there. “If your mother has nine siblings, why did none of them bother to help her when she needed them?”
Rouge looked at the floor, a little sad. “Four of them were in debt themselves, two live in crazy places around the world and didn’t really know, and...the other three tried to help. Mom refused to take more than she could pay back. They still helped do other stuff like watch us while Mom was working, though.”
“Understood. You may continue.” Omega replied, shifting into a slightly less confrontational pose.
“So. I always go to this party, except for those two years when I was on the run. This is going to be my third year back. And…
“I really, really, reallyreally want to introduce my family to my two best friends. You know, the ones who live with me and always have my back and mean the world to me.” she said, looking straight at Shadow and Omega. The former blushed a faint green at the praise, while the latter scoffed.
“Of course you wish to do so. Our excellence is unparalleled.”
Rouge smiled hopefully at them. “I know it’s a lot to ask of you guys, but...will you come to the party this year?”
Omega processed this for a minute. “How amenable is your family towards weapons of incredible destructive power being present in their home?”
“Well, see, about that….” Rouge muttered. “...you might have to empty your weapons cartridges before we go.”
“I am unsure if this is an acceptable outcome. I will respect your wishes to an extent, but I refuse to be without weaponry at my disposal.”
The bat thought for a moment. “...you can bring the flamethrower, but only if you put a PIN lock on it.”
“...”
“...”
Rouge stared him down. “There’s going to be kids there. Kids.”
“Accepted.” Omega said finally. His tone switched to a more triumphant note as he added, “I shall come and impress all of your relatives with my power.”
Shadow had reservations, too. “Won’t it be weird, having people who aren’t really your family there?”
“Shadow…” she said gently. “...you two are as close to me as my ‘real family’, and I want you to be there.”
Omega noted that Shadow was behaving in a manner that suggested he was ‘flustered’. He folded his arms tightly, lowered his head, and his mouth was pressed tightly into a line- an attempt to hide a smile. “...but won’t I take up too much space? An extra bed is more difficult to manage than an outlet.”
Rouge sighed sharply, becoming frustrated with his hesitance. “Mom has air mattresses up to her ears specifically for this, and she lives in Camellia’s house now, which has like ten bedrooms anyway. And you’re totally not going to be ‘a bother’ or anything, so don’t even say that. Mom basically screamed when she found out I was bringing people, and I mean that in a good way. She didn’t stop asking me questions for half an hour.”
“I…” Shadow said tentatively, close to giving in.
“If they’re ever too much for you, though, just feel free to hide in one of the back rooms. There’s plenty of places where you won’t be disturbed.”
The hedgehog sighed, but he didn’t look upset. “I suppose I can try, for you.”
“Yes!” Rouge shouted, kicking her legs before getting up and bouncing up and down. “Heck yeah! This is gonna be great!”
…
Over the next week, they discussed the party numerous times, and Rouge spent a lot of time sitting in the middle of mountains of wrapping paper, packaging presents for her family. Omega and Shadow had tried to help her, but she’d insisted that they not worry about it. “It’s my family,” she had said, waving them away. “You being there is already more than enough. I’d never ask anything else of you.”
Shadow had still made cupcakes, though. Omega helped with the icing.
On the first day of the event, they set off early, making the several hours’ drive from Central City up to Rouge’s family’s house (north of Empire City) so that they’d arrive just before lunch. Thinking of Shadow, Rouge didn’t want him in particular to get caught up in the early (and supposedly quite intense) greetings that her family usually participated in. Omega resolved to turn his force output down just a little- he didn’t want to accidentally break someone’s hand instead of merely shaking it in introduction.
Of course, this all meant they had to endure a four-hour car ride together, involving lots of fights over what music was playing, several different long-distance driving games, and multiple threats to toss one another out the window while moving at 80 mph or more.
So, generally uneventful for them.
...
When they arrived at the family’s house, the E-series robot decreased his optic zoom to 85% just to take the entire place in. It was truly an enormous building, built from what appeared to be stone but on closer inspection was...actually stone. Unexpected, yet impressive.
Omega was mildly uncertain about the heating capabilities of such a house, but at least it was structurally sound. He would have to decide on its defensibility later.
“Wow.” Shadow muttered, his eyes wide. “I know you said it had ten bedrooms, but...wow.”
“I said I wasn’t messing around with you!” Rouge laughed brightly. “This place is crazy big.”
As soon as they opened the door and the bat stepped inside, the team was greeted by a loud shout of “Rouge!” from various delighted family members.
Her immediate family rushed over first, giving her lots of hugs (while her parents relieved Omega of the numerous presents she’d had him carry). Her stepbrother jumped up and down, asking, “Did you bring a present for me? Do I get one? Do I?”
Rouge smiled at him, picking the little cardinal up and giving him a hug. “Of course you do. There’s one right over there!” she said, pointing towards the giant pile of presents.
Rouge’s mother came rushing back over at that, greeting her daughter with a tight embrace. “Oh!” she exclaimed, noticing Omega and Shadow standing by the door. “Are these your friends, Rouge? Come on, introduce us!”
The younger bat grinned. “Alright, so this is my partner-in-crime and our resident edgy goth, Shadow,” she said, gesturing towards the hedgehog. He responded with a glower at Rouge for the latter remark and a polite “Nice to meet you.” to the family.
“And this is my personal palanquin (just kidding, just kidding) and awesome destroyer of enemies, Omega.”
“Greetings, Rouge’s relatives.” Omega said, turning his volume down to a level that Rouge had termed ‘inside voice’. First impressions and all that.
After making their way through many, many more greetings- which Omega recorded to play back for name storage later- the team were finally seated at one of the large couches in the living room. Rouge, being Rouge, began to chat cheerfully with a couple of her family members, describing her latest escapades with the other two team members as well as her general social life.
Shadow and Omega didn’t speak much at first, but the latter in particular soon began to interrupt her stories to point out multiple inaccuracies (mostly Rouge underplaying how utterly awesome he was). He found that he quite enjoyed talking about their various adventures, in fact.
However, the three quickly discovered that some of Rouge’s relatives had...misunderstood her stories.
One of the many aunts- whose name Omega had not yet stored- spoke up. “Rouge, I know you said you were bringing friends, but you don’t have to be shy with us, sweetie. Shadow here seems like a very thoughtful boyfriend.”
Chaos ensued. Rouge choked on her water and Omega had to pound her on the back to help her breathe again. Meanwhile, Shadow seemed to have reflexively assumed a defensive, curled-up position, yet Omega could still make out a faint glow of green from within the black and red ball.
“No!” the bat shouted, once she’d regained her breath. “No, no, we’re only friends, really!”
Her aunt seemed unconvinced, as did several other guests.
Shadow slowly uncurled, prepared to back Rouge up- though he seemed to have temporarily forgotten how to speak in his shock. His mouth moved silently, and he seemed to be having trouble stringing together a coherent sentence.
“I am not romantically involved with Rouge in any way.” he began slowly. “I assure you, she means the world to me, but in a platonic manner. I am grateful to have a friend like her, but that is all we are to each other.”
Several other relatives decided to weigh in on this.
“He seems like a very polite friend!”
“Rouge, even if you’re not together, you had better hang on to this one.”
“He certainly likes you, and that’s what’s important.”
“It’s alright if you aren’t dating, honey!” Rouge’s mom added. “Healthy platonic relationships are very important.”
The younger bat shook her head, covering her eyes with her hand. “Guys, please.” she groaned, before looking over at Shadow.
The hybrid appeared to be surreptitiously trying to get in touch with his hedgehog heritage and burrow underneath the cushions by this point. Rouge grinned at him and wrapped an arm around his waist, pulling him back out into the open. “Come on, don’t make him embarrassed! It’s only day one, guys!”
Shadow cringed at that. Omega, meanwhile, was most definitely not recording any of this and storing it safely in his blackmail folder. Not at all.
…
A little later on, after everyone had eaten lunch, Omega (being the strongest on the team, despite Shadow’s protests otherwise) hauled their suitcases upstairs with little trouble. Rouge had been too busy talking to come with him, and Shadow looked as though he’d buried himself in a pile of cushions and probably wouldn’t be moved without extreme force, so he’d gone up alone.
Looking around the small room, he...found it quite tolerable, honestly. Sunlight streamed in through two medium-sized windows, and there were several empty floating shelves on the walls for their things, as well as a linen closet. There were only two beds in the room, since Omega just required a…
Ah, there it was. A charging port.
The robot was actually more pleased than he expected with the amount of mock evergreen, poinsettias, and other such ornaments in the room, though. He wasn’t much one for artistic expression himself (preferring to express his thoughts via some choice language and a few well-aimed rockets), but his friends were more...appreciative of such things and would likely enjoy the decoration.
Bored with examining the room already, he put down the suitcases and began to explore the house, trying to figure out what the floor plan looked like. He walked through all of the different rooms, enjoying himself while examining all of the possible defensive vantage points and the most optimal attack areas.
Sure, fighting was his job, but who said he couldn’t enjoy contingency planning? Mapping out attacks on his place of residence and figuring out how to best repel invaders was one of his favorite pastimes (right up there with visiting the mall with his friends).
However, once he had planned out about five different strategies, he realized that an hour had gone by and that it was probably a good idea to go check up on said friends.
After he carefully made his way back downstairs- trying to walk in a way that didn’t shake the house was difficult- he saw Rouge still chatting with some of her cousins and looking very happy. Shadow was barely even visible, curled up in a dark corner and alternating between reading and listening to the conversation. Everyone honestly seemed to be enjoying themselves.
However, there was one jarring thing about this warm, familial scene that Omega noticed.
The little children.
They were everywhere. Climbing their parents like a jungle gym, interrupting conversations left and right, running around underfoot, and generally causing mayhem in their wake. While Omega highly appreciated their impressive ability to cause confusion and chaos, he suspected that most of the other people here did not. Multiple guests looked ready to break something, and the robot was fully aware that Rouge’s family did not share his opinions on wanton destruction.
So, he decided to do something about this.
“SMALL CHILDREN,” he shouted, gaining the attention of the entire household. “I CHALLENGE YOU TO A SNOWBALL FIGHT.” That was an acceptable (and fun) form of violence, if he remembered correctly. Rouge certainly looked interested.
The children began to bounce around in various states of excitement, their energy somehow increasing exponentially at this prospect. “Whose team will you be on, mister?” Rouge’s stepbrother asked bravely.
“MY OWN. NONE OF YOU CAN DEFEAT ME.” Omega declared.
“Yeah, right!” an older child shouted. “Come on, guys, let’s go!”
The entire group rushed outside and began to build a snow fort for the upcoming attack. Most of the children were clearly struggling to organize, as half seemed to comprehend the need for a well-structured creation and half were just piling up snow like maniacs.
Meanwhile, Omega began to carefully form large building blocks out of the snow, building a formidable fortress (snow could be imposing, alright??). Once he was satisfied with his semicircle construction, he noticed that he still had a few minutes to wait before the children finished theirs. He spent this time making snowballs, as well as a few other...adjustments. When the children shouted out “Ready!”, he was more than prepared.
Since they were, again, Rouge’s relatives, he was very, very generous and gave them the first chance to fire. The children launched snowball after snowball, but he ducked behind his fort and only one found its mark. Once they were all out of ammunition and scrambling for more, he felt a smug sense of satisfaction.
It was time.
He loaded his arms full of snowballs…
And proceeded to launch them out of his machine gun ports at the children.
The kids scattered in all directions, shrieking with a mixture of fear and excitement. Omega, during their attack, had thought to make even more projectiles, turning what was supposed to be organized warfare into a one-sided rampage of destruction.
By now, Rouge had appeared on the deck and was currently howling with laughter, tears streaming down her face as she watched Omega launch his onslaught of snow. Shadow was standing at the doorway along with several others, a giant wicked grin spread across his face.
The E-series robot truly wished he could make that second expression right now. He turned to Rouge, watching her cackle…
...and immediately proceeded to fire a massive amount of snow at her as well. Her laughter transformed into a gasp of mock betrayal as she scooped up some of the offending substance, packing it into a weapon of her own. “Oh. It. Is. On.”, she hissed, shaking the snow off her wings.
Taking to the skies, she began a counterattack, distracting Omega with varied sizes of snowballs and forcing him to try and fire directly upwards. The children, realizing that they had a powerful ally in Rouge, began to make new projectiles themselves and threw them at him from all sides, until Omega finally found that he was struggling to handle the attack.
As he began to turn the tide again, he realized suddenly that this was entirely due to Rouge’s absence…
...and of course that was when a shadow fell over him.
Followed by a giant pile of snow.
He flailed in the icy trap as he struggled to regain his bearings. Once he had managed to clamber halfway out of the snow, he saw Rouge hovering above him. Her wings struggled to hold her in the air as she laughed again, and he noticed sulkily that she was holding a sheet.
“Cheater.” he muttered, indignant at having been trapped in such an unflattering manner.
“Cheating?! From the guy who launched snowballs like missiles? Really?” she shouted down to him good-naturedly, shaking her head. “Talk about hypocritical, Omega.”
The E-series robot still insisted on having the last laugh, though- he had to get out somehow, so he powered on all of his fans at full blast to clear away the snow. And if everyone was standing too close to avoid the resulting icy shower, well then that was their problem.
After that, though, everyone had to go inside and dry themselves off. Organics couldn’t handle being wet and cold very well, and Omega didn’t like the idea of his circuitry being shorted out. He felt a great sense of satisfaction at having established his status as the cool one on the very first day, though.
He spent a little more time with the young ones after that, playing several rounds of a popular card game called One with them and stacking up all of the plus-fours. The robot showed no mercy even in games.
Several children, evidently impressed by his prowess (or perhaps just in awe of the fact that he was a giant robot) begged him for promises that he would play more tomorrow, to which he quickly agreed. Not long after, to everyone’s disappointment, the kids’ parents came and practically dragged them to the dinner table, having shouted their names four or five times by this point.
As he walked into the dining room, Omega surveyed the area, focusing for a moment on the glow that the many candles gave off on the table. Fire was always a nice touch.
Looking further, he noticed that the wooden table alone was a formidable piece of furniture, filling the largest room in the house and forcing some chairs to squeeze up against the wall just to make space. And that wasn’t even mentioning the feast laid out on top of it. Omega ignored that for now in favor of sitting down on one side of Rouge after he saw her at the table. Looking over to her other side, he noticed Shadow surveying the food spread out on the table with what most would consider a completely blank look.
Omega, however, had experience with analyzing Shadow’s facial expressions, and noted the slight tension in his face as well as the fact that he was fidgeting with his silverware. Both he and Rouge had a good idea as to why, too- Shadow didn’t need any of this.
The hybrid had been created with incredible physical resilience, able to withstand the most arduous of conditions. This included a significant lack of food. He actually ate only about three times a week, and even then he only consumed small meals. While it was about time for him to eat today, the fact that there would be even more food over the next couple of days seemed to have produced a conundrum for him.
If he ate now, he wouldn’t need to later, which could be quite awkward, particularly when everybody else would. Omega thought through the options and decided that there were three main paths he could take: eat now and not later, not eat now but do so later, or possibly attempt to eat a little on all three days.
Rouge seemed to have realized this as well. Leaning over to Shadow, she whispered, “Whatever you want to do is fine, hon. It’s okay if you eat a lot over these few days- everyone else here will too. If you don’t want to, though, that’s cool- just make sure you have something at some point, alright?”
The robot watched as Shadow relaxed slightly at her understanding words. The change was almost imperceptible, but he now sat back in his chair instead of forward, and he’d stopped adjusting his place setting.
Once everyone was seated and they’d given a quick toast, the family began to dig in. Shadow sat back and waited for everyone else to take some food first- a wise choice. Rouge, on the other hand, entered the rather impressive food frenzy with a voracity that her team members knew all too well- she often complained that one of her few vices (aside from gems and other sparkly objects) was food.
Omega took this time to survey what he could see of the dishes, interested in finding out for himself what a proper Wintersweek meal looked like. He saw two dishes that appeared to be some sort of poultry, as well as bowls of finger food that looked like they were filled with crickets and beetles. Various platters of cooked vegetables in every color of the rainbow covered the table, some with sliced fruit available as well. Loaves of bread in multiple shapes and sizes were scattered throughout the presentation, accented by artfully placed centerpieces.
Quite honestly, it looked impressive.
Rouge had a little bit of everything on her plate, and was currently digging into a buttery baked potato like she hadn’t eaten in weeks. Omega silently put his napkin next to her plate, the (sarcastic) message clear: You need this more than I do.
Shadow, meanwhile, had taken a little fruit, one piece of meat, and two slices of bread, but seemed very hesitant to eat much more than that. He looked to be quite invested in a conversation that several of the adults were having about their own teenage experiences, often leaning in slightly when a funny story came up.
Omega mostly kept an eye on his friends, while also half listening to the children talk about the latest video game that had become popular. It seemed to contain lots of fighting combined with some impressive storytelling, and the robot made a note of the game title for his own use later.
However, as he checked on Rouge again, making sure she hadn’t choked on her food, he noticed that she had left her plate to the side in favor of talking to her family about...wait.
Omega knew this story.
This was a story where he was walking through the halls of an abandoned underground hideout for a highly sophisticated ring of criminals (an assignment for their entire team). In which said diabolical criminals had installed multiple traps designed to keep people out. And these traps. Included magnets. That specifically messed up artificial intelligence.
Omega’s memory had been severely impaired by the event, but Shadow and Rouge told him later that they had discovered him stumbling around the main hub of the base, rambling out loud about things as ridiculous as current weather patterns and- he shuddered internally- kittens. He was eternally grateful for this memory loss, though, as the two had apparently, instead of taking this seriously, dissolved into helpless laughter on the spot.
Of course, they had taken him to Tails to get fixed up. But not until after Rouge had filmed another five minutes or so of him acting absolutely loopy while their laughter, punctuated with the occasional gasp for breath, filled the background.
And she was just getting to the part where they found him now-!
The E-series robot shot out of his chair and clamped a hand over Rouge’s mouth, turning his volume low and hissing “Don’t you dare.” in her ear.
Unfortunately, this only added to everyone else’s interest, as Rouge began to cackle loudly at Omega’s evident embarrassment and her memory of the event. “Tell us! Tell us!” Camellia (Rouge’s stepmother) cried out, clapping her hands and looking for all the world like a child who had just been handed a chocolate bar.
“Help me, Shadow!” Rouge shouted through the steel grip on her face, slurring her words with laughter. The hybrid, happy to take a break from the crowded room and equally happy to shame Omega, pried the robot off of Rouge and somehow managed to drag him out of the room as everyone now leaned in to hear her finish the story.
“So we were really worried, right? Since we hadn’t heard anything? And then we-”
Shadow shut the door on her voice and smirked at Omega, but there was a tinge of real happiness in his expression. “It’s alright, Omega. She doesn’t actually want you to feel bad, you know.”
“That’s what you say.” he scoffed. “Rouge isn’t in there telling them about the time you didn’t eat for a month on a mission and then binge-”
“Alright, alright!” Shadow groaned. “I get it, but let’s let her have fun, alright? This is her family, after all.”
“Fine.” Omega grumbled. “But I will get you back for this.”
“Sure you will.” Shadow raised an eyebrow at him.
This led to a fierce staring match/arm-wrestling battle and subsequent argument over who won, immediately followed by Omega pulling out his phone and the two watching a recently popular obstacle course show. Of course, they both agreed that they could do far better than any of the contestants.
Eventually, though, as the evening wore on, the two joined back up with Rouge to head to their room. Shadow took a hot shower while Rouge changed into her favorite pajamas- they were soft and white with little pink hearts all over (her favorite colors).
She yawned loudly just as the hybrid walked in, already wrapped in a blanket and pulling on some plain black nightwear. He didn’t really need it, but his fifty-year stint in what was essentially a superpowered freezer had left him with a distinct dislike for the cold.
Omega had already plugged into the outlet and begun to charge, but yet…”Why don’t I get a blanket?”
“What the heck d’ you want one for?” Rouge muttered, already exhausted.
“Well, you both have them.” he muttered sulkily, glowering at them from his corner of the room.
The bat opened up the closet in the room, looking up at the top shelf. “Shadow, c’mere. I can’t reach this thing by myself.”
He walked over quickly, not appearing to be tired at all. Omega, as always, knew better, and saw the fatigue from the long day that he tried to hide behind his “Ultimate Lifeform” title.
Rouge jumped onto his shoulders in a practiced movement, snatching a pale purple fluffy blanket from the shelf and flinging it half-heartedly at Omega. “There’s your blanket.” she declared, before jumping straight from Shadow to her bed.
She settled into her usual sleeping position, with her feet hooked over the headboard and her face and pillow about halfway down the bed. It wasn’t a typical behavior for most, but she was a bat, after all. “‘Night, guys.” she murmured, already half asleep.
Shadow carefully lifted his blankets and slid under them, trying to keep them as neat as possible. The hedgehog shifted into a half-curled position, displaying his quills to the world and protecting his vulnerable legs and chest. “Sleep well, Rouge. Goodnight, Omega.” he said softly, still trying to stay awake.
“Good night.” the robot replied.
Omega kept an eye on his teammates, the room lit only by a patch of moonlight from the window. He listened to Rouge’s slight snoring, and watched as Shadow’s eyes slowly closed and his breathing evened out.
The robot was always cautious about shifting into his own form of ‘sleep’, but reminded himself that this was not enemy territory. This was Rouge’s family’s house, and they were all safe.
Still, he watched his friends sleep peacefully for a while longer. Then, he selected low power mode from his menu of choices and allowed his eyes to go dark.

Exciting Writing Announcement/Update #1!

Exciting Writing Announcement/Update #1!!!
In honor of the fact that I am going to be posting the last chapters of "This Is Love" Very Soon (which, spoiler alert, is Exciting Writing Announcement/Update #2), I have self-published a new book that I am very excited to be sharing with you all =D
As I kept saying, I got really really attached to all the OCs in D:M, and I really wanted to keep writing them in their own story, in a completely original setting, where everyone gets to be happy and alive. So during the very long editing process, I have done that! If you're at all interested in reading an original story featuring Masaomi, Youji, Hinami and Shiori, you can buy the story here.
And if you want to read the first chapter, I posted it here, on a tumblr I created for this side project, but not sure how active this sideblog will be. I am so bad at maintaining more than one social media.
Masaomi is actually a dragon in this one =D Everyone else gets to be a mythological creature too.
Blurb:
The Red Dragon has been betrayed. Akaryu Masaomi is rightfully one of six rulers of the celestial world's elaborate and repressive administration, and has taken his powers and privileges for granted all his life, but he has been framed for treason, stripped of his lands, and thrown in prison. Now, trapped in human form and without allies, all he can do is wait for his execution in the most secure prison in the land of Tenou.
Elsewhere, three strangers are all sent on a mission. The soldier obeying her commanding officer and seeking a turning point in their rebellion against the tyrannical administration, the shaman just trying to survive her fall from grace while listening to the cryptic advice of her great-grandmother's ghost, and the outcast who owes a favor to the divine entity who once saved his life, all set out with the same goal: Rescue the Red Dragon.
More information/FAQ under the cut.
This is a brand new project, so no one has actually asked any questions yet, but since I thought there might be some questions, here are the ones I anticipated:
Why is this under a different name than your other original novel?
Let's just say, there are people IRL who know about Light in Dark Places that I would prefer NOT know about this one, so I published under a different name.
Will it be available in paperback?
Yes! Eventually! Well, ideally. But that process takes slightly longer, and I didn't want to wait, so it's just available as an ebook for now.
Is it a repeat of "This is Love?"
Nope! Overall, some of the backstories are/similar to how they appear in "This Is Love" but in a completely new context and world, so it is entirely new. Nothing that was written in "This is Love" gets word for word repeated.
Is there romance?
Also eventually, but gosh this one is somehow an even slower burn than "This Is Love," so this first book has no romance at all.
Is there more than one?
I'm hoping for a series, and there is *for sure* going to be a sequel, because the first draft of the sequel is finished, but needs a long and thorough editing job. Like all of my writing projects, the presence of more books kinda depends on how fun it is to keep writing. But I do really enjoy writing these characters, so here's hoping.
Are you still writing fanfiction?
Yes, of course. As Exciting Writing Update/Announcement #3, I have FINALLY started writing that long KNB fantasy AU again. That fic is my white whale damn it, and I am finally hunting that thing down. Or however the metaphor works.
Why doesn’t the cover show up on the Amazon page?
I don’t knooooooow, but it distresses me greatly. =( Actually, I think it’s because I literally uploaded this yesterday, and all the details have not caught up with the page yet, and I was too impatient to wait for it to look all nice and professional. Hopefully that sorts itself out soon.
Are the other D:M OCs going to make an appearance?
Some of them make exceedingly brief appearances in this first book, and will feature more heavily in the second book. But yeah, if I created an OC for D:M, I considered them fair game to appear in this new series. You know, with slight name variations and what not.
Anything else?
If you're actually reading all these questions/answers, thank you so much, I love you. But yeah, that's it for now I guess =D
As I reward for those of you reading these questions, I will confirm that the end of "This Is Love" will be posted tomorrow, barring anything supremely unexpected happening.=D =D
