Chip is the only one of them who feels no shame in crying. There was no force over his shoulder telling him he was less than or a burden.

Arlin never said anything when he would cry. Maybe it was because Chip was only a child, but Chip new better. Arlin wasn’t good with words in the same way most dads aren’t. But he was damn good at showing his love, his acceptance, his openness. He’d let Chip cry, sit next to him with a hand on his back. Arlin was huge, his hand went from chips waist to his shoulders. It was the weight of his love.

Arlin wasn’t very patient, but he was when Chip would cry. No one likes hearing a child cry, so he’d tell jokes, make silly faces, and take him to his quarters to play. But in those serious moments, where the pain was to heavy for Chips child shoulders, they’d sit together. Chip in Arlin’s arms, protected from the evils of the world as he wailed.

Jay and Gillian struggle in this aspect.

Jay could cry in front of the women in her family. May would hold her close rock her back and forth until she eased. Ava would pet her hair, pull her into her lap, hugging her close. Maybe at one point her father held space for her tears but that is time long clouded with time. Any vulnerability in front of her father felt like a failure, so it quickly stopped happening.

As she got older, as May became too buys with the bar and Ava had to leave for her navy job it became harder to find it in herself to cry without guilt. Her pain was causing others inconvenience; her problems are her own she shouldn’t burden others with it.

When Ava died, it felt impossible to cry. It took far longer than Jay would admit for her to shed even a single tear. She had to be there for her mom, goddess knows her fathers anger held little space for comfort. It was her responsibility now. There was no time for tears.

Gillian can’t remember the last time he cried in front of anyone. Furthermore the only times he’s cried recently was his reunion with Edyn (and then their separation) and his separation from Pretzel (+ their reunification) (but those, to him, hardly count).

You can’t see tears underwater but even if you could Gillian doesn’t think it would matter. His tears had all but dried and in the quieted darkest places in his mind his mind wanders. It creeps into those never ending days of training.

The impossible standard he was held to as the chosen one. The eight of the ocean and its people held in the the swords his fingers were badly big enough to grasp. In the worst parts of his mind his heart tell him he has bled himself dry of any tears he may hold. His younger self so naive so small used them all up leaving none for him now. All the water in the world and he was still dehydrated.

went to pick up a prescription and it didnt go through my insurance so i was like hm let me come back another day. went another day and gave them my new insurance and it made it More expensive so i was like hm idk i dont think ill pick it up sorry. but im gonna go back today to get it anyway.
