Notas de tradução: Hongxia (红侠) | "A Guerreira Vermelha"
Tumblr media
Exemplo: Hsu Ko Hui → Xu Guohui
3. Minha sugestão pessoal de tradução do título.
Tumblr media

Diary of a Junebug
Tumblr media
A light shower of spring rain for the sprigs of lavender lotuses and night sorrel
The Misty Range Woodlands is a planet, though many see it as a giant greenhouse - and they’re not wrong. It’s home to all kinds of rare and unusual plants that seem to only exist here, and so great care is taken to ensure that they remain as bountiful as ever.
Not surprisingly, it’s one of those places where you have to make reservations far in advance in order to visit. Thankfully, I have connections, so we got a good deal on one of their resorts thanks to the Epiphany since they’re here on a mission. What I didn’t expect was to also run into Jamie, Aislinn, and the Linnea squad, so that was nice. Jamie had been hoping to meet up with the Epiphany crew, especially since she hadn’t met Meiying and Hongxia in person yet.
As for why we’re all here, it’s to take a hands-on class on how to take care of lavender lotuses and night sorrel. Not too long ago, those two plants have been discovered outside of the Misty Range Woodlands, most which are native to those areas but were considered unknown until recently. And it turns out that there’s some growing near the camp, which is a pretty big deal.
Even if it wasn’t required, I still would’ve signed up for this class out of curiosity if someone suggested it to me. I think it’s fun to take random classes to learn something new without the pressure of having to be good or worry about grades - sometimes you’re just curious and want to try something out because it looks interesting.
Who knows, maybe you’ll find yourself enjoying the experience far more than you expected, which then leads you to wanting to take a deeper dive into it. That’s how I got into things like mechanical keyboard building, which I knew nothing about until I got one of my own and wanted to customize it after seeing a bunch of pretty and aesthetic pics on social media. Sometimes you just see something that looks pretty and you’re like I want that.
But really, making your workspace pretty while still functional helps a lot with your productivity. I mean, who wouldn’t want a nice looking desk that sparks joy when you look at it? Why must everything look so plain under the guise of professionalism? What’s wrong with having some color or design to show a bit of personality and make things a bit more visually interesting?
Maybe it’s just me, but having a mechanical keyboard makes me more motivated to get work done. They’re just so satisfying to type with, especially with the right key caps that look and sound nice - basically, it’s a sensory thing. A flat keyboard just doesn’t hit the same anymore.
Anyway, so learning about lavender lotuses and night sorrel’s kinda like that in terms of starting out with little to no knowledge about it, to now wanting to take a deep dive after learning a bit about the basics. I’m no plant expert by any means - I know a lot of people who deserve that title far more, though expert doesn’t begin to scratch the surface of their expertise - but I have picked up a lot of interesting tidbits over the years.
It helps to know someone who’s not only well versed, but also passionate about the subject. I find that they’re the ones who are more than happy to talk about it, teach about it, and just share their enthusiasm in general. Meiying and Nabil are two plant experts - though for very different reasons/fields - who easily fall into that category, so it’s no surprise that people often turn to them for advice.
In fact, Meiying was invited as a guest lecturer for this course since night sorrel - and moon sorrel, which is kinda related/under the same plant family - is native to Qiangshou. Both are used for its medicinal qualities related to improving sleep and reducing headaches induced by stress and anxiety. Along with having studied the plants extensively, Meiying also has firsthand experience on the medicinal effects. Over there, they use it in herbal teas, usually one whole sprig if taken before bed, or a handful of petals if taken for headaches.
Now that I think about it, I do remember seeing some night sorrel growing along the Crimson Maple River - she even pointed it out to us along with a million other unique plants that grow there. There were even a few sprigs hanging on one of the windows of her place, probably something they usually have on hand when needed.
So that was fun learning about, as well as a much needed break from an informative, though just as interesting, series of classes. Plus, Meiying’s good at explaining things as well as keeping the audience engaged, even when she sometimes goes off tangents, which I think adds to the charm.
Even though she never intended to be a lecturer, people back at home just assumed she’d be good at it because she knows so much about topics that most would consider niche - not to mention how clearly and thoroughly she explains things. Her first go at teaching a class kinda came out of nowhere - personal recommendations, one which happened to come from Hongxia’s sister-in-law.
What was the subject? Sex education. Because a lot of adults are lacking in that, which isn’t really surprising. Why Meiying specifically? Because she gets quite a few customers who are looking for some natural or herbal thing to increase their sex drive. Also, on the opposite end with people trying to suppress their sex drive, and maybe even induce abortions. Then there’s some who think they can treat STDs without having to see a doctor, probably because they’re ashamed and assume they can hide it.
Being an apothecary sure brings a lot of unusual cases, so it’s no wonder that Meiying picked up on a lot of different things. Although her official title’s an apothecary, people have referred to her as a detective, medical assistant, IT person, secretary, pharmacist, teacher, botanist, consultant, just to name a few. Still, even though she’s considered a jack of all trades, she considers herself first and foremost an apothecary, someone who just happens to be fascinated with medicine - not just in terms of treating an ailment, but also the process of making it and the pharmacology behind it.
Seeing Aislinn again was a nice surprise - same for the Linnea Squad too. Aislinn and Jamie are here to visit a friend and the Linnea Squad tagged along at almost the last minute. Basically, there’s shot going down with Linnea’s family, so Jamie’s taking them under her wing again until that drama dies down. Linnea already blocked at least 20 calls since we got here, which is a lot. Like, don’t they have anything better to do than to harass someone who’s not even involved?
She already made her stance clear by standing up against them and she absolutely doesn’t regret her decision. The other members - Florina, Nash, and Shirin - stood with her in solidarity, not just because she’s their leader, but because they had their own reasons for becoming disillusioned with the International Sanguine Watchdogs Army. Many have accused them of biting the hands that fed them, especially since they’re the reason why they’re still alive today, but that’s obviously their way of saving face.
In short, it’s a fucking mess that they’re lucky to get out of relatively unscathed, mainly because Linnea has one sympathetic family member who was willing to put their neck out for them. Linnea’s able to keep in contact with him, which is how she got the heads up about the current situation. She doesn’t know too much about the specifics other than it’s another one of those things that kept being swept under the rug until it piles up and now it’s blowing up in their faces. The older she got, the more she noticed that stuff like that was a regular occurrence, which is very problematic.
However, she did learn something that might be a bit of hopeful news from her adoptive brother Lauge regarding someone the squad assumed was dead. The squad broke ties with the International Sanguine Watchdogs Army for various reasons, and the annihilation - yes, that’s the word they used - of their comrade Altti’s squad along with countless others proved to be the last straw. Linnea and Altti were assigned to work together on an ill fated mission, resulting in him being the only survivor of a failed retreat.
The Linnea Squad barely escaped themselves, and Altti would’ve been killed too if Jet hadn’t insisted on saving him. By then, Linnea and Florina had grown fed up with the higher ups and their questionable decisions. Sure, things can get unpredictable and go from 0 to 100 in the blink of an eye, but straight up sacrificing your own people just to send a message and then playing them up to be martyrs is taking things way too far.
Like, damn, it’s basically an extreme case of if I can’t have this, then no one can. It’s like someone throwing a fit when they lose a game, except instead of flipping the game board, they just bombed the hell out of it. Then they declare it a victory because everyone’s dead, therefore, no one can object. No wonder Linnea and the others bailed out - I too would be like fuck this shit, I’m out, bye.
So for a time, Altti accompanied the Linnea Squad. He initially butted heads with them, mainly because he was older and wasn’t too happy with having to work with a bunch of kids, especially two who technically outranked him. Jet was the one who managed to get him and his squad to cooperate and see them as equals. When the higher ups brushed the tragedy aside like some cold statistic, the Linnea Squad stood in solidarity with Altti when he protested against their indifference. They didn’t expect a domino effect to follow afterwards, though they now know that it was bound to happen eventually.
Then in the span of a few weeks, the Linnea Squad lost three comrades - Altti, Jet, and Gabe. However, Altti didn’t walk out like the other two, and his status remains unknown, but presumed dead. Linnea was warned by her brother that the Sanguine Watchdogs was planning to seize the entire Sanguine Jurisdiction, which meant that the squad had to flee the country if they want to survive. For context, the main city is right in the center, so the closest border is about a 6 hour drive - even longer and more treacherous when you’re most likely traveling on foot most of the time, as well as trying to evade the military.
They were almost at the border when disaster struck, forcing the squad to split up in order to improve their chances of escaping. Linnea and Florina went north, Jet and Gabe east, Altti, Nash, and Shirin west. The westbound group was caught in a crossfire when riots broke out in the surrounding cities, forcing the higher ups to resort to extreme measures similar to what happened with Altti’s squad.
Nash and Shirin got separated and they barely escaped thanks to a civilian who was believed to be the last person who saw Altti before he disappeared in the chaos. As the riots escalated, the guys realized they had to make a difficult decision with Nash insisting that they not leave until they find Altti because it’s what Jet would have done while Shirin felt that they were wasting valuable time, even if he agreed that it wouldn’t be right to leave without him.
In the end, Lauge came in and practically dragged them out of the city despite their protests. He managed to reunite the rest of the squad at the border of Sanguine. Despite the risks, he wanted to see them off since it’ll probably be the last time he’ll ever see them face to face. Of course, the Linnea Squad was reluctant to leave when one of them’s missing, but Lauge told them that there was no turning back. If they refuse, their days will be numbered - no exaggeration, this is what happens when you live in a war zone.
Linnea had no choice but to do as he said, though she made him promise to do whatever he can to find Altti and help him out in any way he can. She says Lauge always keeps his word, which is why he’s the only family member she can trust at this point. A lot of people went missing and are presumed dead, so there’s a high chance that Altti is one of them, as much as she hates to admit it. Even so, he and all the other victims deserved better than to just be some “unfortunate casualty”, a term the army likes to throw around that Linnea’s grown to despise.
So there is finally a bit of hopeful intel coming from Lauge that suggests Altti survived the riots. He had heard some rumors here and there, but it wasn’t until recently when he came across concrete evidence that finally settled that matter. It’s still not much to go on since Altti’s current status remains unknown, but at least they now know that he escaped the riots and retreated south. Lauge plans to search the areas where he might have gone and hopefully uncover more information.
While the squad remains realistic, they really hope that they’ll be able to reunite with Altti. It’s bad enough having Jet and Gabe walk out on them - and that whole thing is just a mess. All Florina can say is that it’s for the best if they keep out of each other’s way, though they can’t keep that up forever. They agree that Jet means well, but he often fails to consider the bigger picture, which they fear will lead to his downfall. It’s still a bit of a sensitive subject for Linnea, but sooner or later, she and Jet will have to face each other and work things out.
The classes have provided a welcome distraction for the Linnea Squad - good thing there were enough open spots to squeeze them in. Nash isn’t certain, but he’s pretty sure he’s seen night sorrel in his hometown, or maybe it was moon sorrel, which looks similar. Meiying and the instructors don’t think he’s mistaken since both flowers have distinctive colors - shades of blue and purple, kinda like a galaxy. Yeah, that’s something that would leave an impression. Even though Nash’s hometown is in ruins and likely occupied by the Sanguine Watchdogs, it’s likely that there might be some night or moon sorrel growing in the ruins, so it’s worth looking into. Looks like getting into the class was meant to be.
Then there’s lavender lotuses, which are native to the Misty Range Woodlands. So far, there’s no known sightings of them outside of the planet. They have many uses - potions, perfumes, vitamin supplements, kombucha, and soups. Along with being a good source of vitamin C, they also help relieve stomachaches and reduce anxiety. While lavender lotus products are relatively common in these parts, they’re pretty much unknown outside of the Arrowroot Orbit - meaning, places like planet Earth. So they’re using this course to introduce the outside world to this otherworldly flower that’s basically their version of a dandelion.
Even though there’s a lot to learn about night sorrel and lavender lotuses, I don’t feel that overwhelmed. I mean, it’s a lot of information, though the hands-on stuff and Meiying’s interlude kept things engaging while also breaking up the monotony of just sitting through a bunch of lectures and video modules.

Hachoo, Lulu and Aunt Hongxia
【 Hachoo’s Diary 】1028:
Mom asked Aunt Hongxia to take care of me. Aunt Hongxia led me and Lulu to the west of the Magic Forest. Plenty of flowers on the road were blooming, and they smelled like fresh apples... Mom had eaten all the apple-flavored ice cream, but she thought I know nothing about it. On the way home, I picked a few apple-flavored flowers. Will my dear mom get better soon after receiving the flowers?

Researchers have used carbon dots, created from human hair waste sourced from a barbershop, to create a kind of ‘armor’ to improve the performance of cutting-edge solar technology.
In a study, the researchers led by Professor Hongxia Wang in collaboration with Associate Professor Prashant Sonar of QUT’s Centre for Materials Science showed the carbon nanodots could be used to improve the performance of perovskites solar cells.
Perovskites solar cells, a relatively new photovoltaic technology, are seen as the best PV candidate to deliver low-cost, highly efficient solar electricity in coming years. They have proven to be as effective in power conversion efficiency as the current commercially available monocrystalline silicon solar cells, but the hurdles for researchers in this area is to make the technology cheaper and more stable.
Unlike silicon cells, they are created with a compound that is easily manufactured, and as they are flexible they could be used in scenarios such as solar-powered clothing, backpacks that charge your devices on the go and even tents that could serve as standalone power sources.
This is the second major piece of research to come as a result of a human hair derived carbon dots as multifunctional material.
Last year, Associate Professor Prashant Sonar led a research team, including Centre for Materials Science research fellow Amandeep Singh Pannu, that turned hair scraps into carbon nanodots by breaking down the hairs and then burning them at 240 degrees celsius. In that study, the researchers showed the carbon dots could be turned into flexible displays that could be used in future smart devices.
In this new study, Professor Wang’s research team, including Dr Ngoc Duy Pham, and Mr Pannu, working with Professor Prashant Sonar’s group, used the carbon nanodots on perovskite solar cells out of curiosity. Professor Wang’s team had previously found that nanostructured carbon materials could be used to improve a cell’s performance.
After adding a solution of carbon dots into the process of making the perovskites, Professor Wang’s team found the carbon dots forming a wave-like perovskite layer where the perovskite crystals are surrounded by the carbon dots.
“It creates a kind of protective layer, a kind of armour,” Professor Wang said.
“It protects the perovskite material from moisture or other environmental factors, which can cause damage to the materials.”
The study found that perovskite solar cells covered with the carbon dots had a higher power conversion efficiency and a greater stability than perovskite cells without the carbon dots.
Professor Wang has been researching advanced solar cells for about 20 years, and working with perovskite cells since they were invented about a decade ago, with the primary objective of developing cost-effective, stable photovoltaics materials and devices, to help solve the energy issue in the world.
“Our final target is to make solar electricity cheaper, easier to access, longer lasting and to make PV devices lightweight because current solar cells are very heavy,” Professor Wang said.
“The big challenges in the area of perovskite solar cells are solving stability of the device to be able to operate for 20 years or longer and the development of a manufacturing method that is suitable for large scale production.
“Currently, all the reported high-performance perovskite solar cells have been made in a controlled environment with extremely low level of moisture and oxygen, with a very small cell area which are practically unfeasible for commercialization.
“To make the technology commercially viable, challenges for fabrication of efficient large area, stable, flexible, perovskite solar panels at low cost needs to be overcome.
“This can only be achieved through a deep understanding of the material properties in large-scale production and under industrially compatible conditions.”
Professor Wang is particularly interested in how perovskite cells could be used in the future to power spacecrafts.
The International Space Station is powered by four solar arrays, which can generate up to 120 kW of electricity. But one disadvantage of the current technology of space PVs is the weight of the payload to get them there.
While perovskite would be much lighter, one of the challenges for researchers is to develop perovskite cells able to cope with the extreme radiation and broad range of temperature variation in space—from minus 185 degrees to more than 150 degrees Celsius.
Professor Wang said the solution could be ten years off, but researchers were continuing to gain greater insights in the area.
Currently Professor Wang’s research team is collaborating with Professor Dmitri Golberg in the QUT Centre for Materials Science to understand the properties of perovskite materials under extreme environmental conditions such as strong irradiation of an electron beam and drastic temperature change.
“I’m quite optimistic given how much this technology has improved so far,” Professor Wang said.

CAO FEI A BEAUBOURG.

How to make your hair thick?
Hair transplantation Gao Hongxia
one billion six hundred and thirty million eight hundred and fifty-four thousand four hundred and forty-four
How to increase the hair volume, we first need to determine the reason for the low hair volume, whether it is natural hair volume, hair loss in metabolism, or hair loss.
Many people's hair used to be very thick, but unknowingly, the amount of hair becomes less and thinner. For people who have less hair, how can they effectively increase hair?
So let's see what factors affect the hair volume? What aspects should we pay attention to in our daily life in order to make our hair more.
First of all, we can analyze why the hair becomes less?
1. Androgen alopecia
Androgen alopecia (also known as seborrheic alopecia) is mainly one of the androgens in the blood, testosterone, which is in 5 α Under the action of reductase, dihydrotestosterone is formed. Dihydrotestosterone is a culprit acting on hair follicles. It makes hair follicles necrosis, resulting in hair loss.
2. Lack of nutrition
Protein synthesis is the main dependence of hair growth. There must be sufficient protein, vitamins and trace elements to promote hair synthesis. If there is a lack of some nutrients, the growth period of hair follicles may be ended in advance, resulting in an increase in hair at rest.
3. Blood circulation
Blood circulation supplies the nutrition of hair follicles. Long term brain use, high mental pressure and anemia may lead to insufficient blood circulation in the scalp and increase hair loss.
4. Endocrine disorders
Endocrine disorders are mainly reflected in women. Women turn around especially during the physiological period and postpartum period, which is caused by the changes of estrogen in the body.
In addition, thyroid hormone will also affect hair growth. Due to bad living habits, it will lead to endocrine disorders, and the problem of hair loss will follow.
5. Incorrect hairstyle or perm
Some people are used to pulling their hair back. For example, pulling hair loss may occur if they comb a ponytail.
In addition, external stimulation can also lead to less hair. For example, frequent scalding and dyeing will change the pH value of the scalp, leading to hair follicle stimulation and hair loss.
How can we make hair more?
1. Keep an open mind and keep a good mood
People who are easy to be happy will be full of hope for life. Therefore, even if there are negative emotions, such as depression and anxiety, they can get rid of them by themselves. Because the psychological pressure is reduced, the possibility of infection will be reduced to the lowest, and the growth of hair follicles and scalp will be more healthy.
2. Keep a good schedule and sleep
Often staying up late will make people's body organs can't rest. In order to ensure the normal operation of the whole body, our body will secrete androgens to maintain the operation of the body and the excitement of the brain. When androgens secrete too much, the content of DHT in the human body will increase, and DHT is the culprit of hair loss, because it will directly destroy the surrounding hair follicles Blood vessels, resulting in insufficient blood supply to hair follicles, will lead to hair follicle atrophy and hair loss.
3. Pay attention to diet and nutrition
Diet is a very important link in daily life. If the structure of diet is wrong and the body lacks nutrients, it will lead to a series of problems. If you want to fix hair and prevent hair loss, you should do the following from the diet: first, you should eat less or not eat too influential foods such as fried food, wine and pepper, eat more foods containing zinc, as well as foods containing iron such as black fungus and spinach, which will help prevent hair loss Preparing hair loss can improve hair loss.
4. Hair transplantation encryption therapy
If you have lost your hair or your hair is sparse, bald, and the hairline moves back due to hair loss, hair transplantation can help your hair from less to thicker.
For congenital hair loss or acquired diffuse hair loss, hair encryption surgery can transplant hair follicles and add an appropriate amount of hair in the sparse part of hair to maintain a considerable density in appearance.

Making emotional support teddy bears, because why not?
Never underestimate the power of having an emotional support companion by your side when you need a little lift. Life can get rough and sometimes we have a lot weighing on our minds, so why not turn to something that can provide you comfort to help you get through the day?
This crafting session turned out to be perfect timing for the visitors who dropped by the camp before heading home after meeting up to address some heavy issues. I wasn’t at that meeting, but I am aware of the situation, and so I really hope things turn out okay in the end. It’s never easy dealing with shit that really isn’t in anyone’s control - life can be cruel like that.
Daisy Jane and I came up with the idea of making teddy bears after seeing a bunch of videos of people making emotional support chickens. I don’t know, something about emotional support chickens just caught everyone’s attention, like the kind of thing we never thought we needed and now we’re intrigued. I enjoyed watching other people film their process on making it, which turned out to be therapeutic for them too, probably because they’re trying something new and different. Plus, you’re making a cute little friend and watching them slowly come to life - how is that not amazing?
It’s a knitting pattern, which was how we came across it, though I’m honestly still on the fence on actually making one for myself. First of all, I don’t have the right yarn for it - I mean, I could make it a scrappy project like a lot of people have done, but I don’t know if I have enough and whether or not it’ll look cohesive. Don’t wanna play yarn chicken while making a chicken - haha.
Also, and probably the biggest obstacle for me, is that I’ve never made anything like this before, so I really have no idea how it’s gonna turn out. The only experience I had with making a knit animal was a fish from a long time ago, and that just involves simple increases and decreases - two pieces knit the exact same way and then seaming them together. But a chicken’s gonna be more complex than that from what it looks like, and given my experience with crochet amigurimi, I’m gonna really struggle with my stitch counts.
(I’m still haunted by my wonky six tentacled octopus…)
Anyway, instead of an emotional support chicken, we’re sewing up emotional support teddy bears. We have kits from a while ago that I’ve been meaning to use for an event…only to completely forget about them. Finally did some long overdue cleaning and found them hidden under a pile of stuff that I really need to sort through - but that’s for another time.
The kits contain everything you need, as well as detailed instructions, so it’s beginner friendly. I’m kinda rusty when it comes to making plushies, which I usually use a sewing machine for anyway, and most of the group have little to no experience with sewing in general aside from basic mending skills.
The instructions are written to cater to novices and those who are more experienced, which is why there’s a lot of pages despite it being straightforward. A little annoying to flip through, I gotta admit, but I really appreciate the detail - it’s just the format that really bothers me. They really should’ve split it into three booklets for the three levels, beginner, intermediate, and advanced so it’s easier to read. Highlighting definitely helps, or else you’d end up reading the wrong set of instructions.
Joining us in this event is quite a group - Ambrosia, Latte, Aymn, Connie, Olive, Della, Hongxia, Sadiki, and Madeleine. As for why they’re all together, it’s because they’re concerned about Safiyya. The situation in the Lunar Rainforest cannot go on much longer - Safiyya can stall all she wants, but patience is running thin on both sides. While they have managed to avoid a full on conflict, that doesn’t change the fact that there are many longstanding problems that should’ve been dealt with swiftly and decisively in the first place.
While that is a pressing issue, that’s not what this meeting really is about. To put it simply, Safiyya is not meant to be a leader. That doesn’t make her less of a person - it’s just that most people aren’t suited for that kind of position. Like personality traits - some are more emotional while others are more rational, some can work under pressure while others will crack. Safiyya does have some qualities of a capable leader, but in the words of her friends and colleagues, some of her greatest strengths are also her greatest weaknesses.
Being a leader is tough, and it’s not something I’d personally strive for. Having the option to choose to become a leader is considered a luxury to some. For people like Safiyya, Della, Hongxia, and Madeleine, they didn’t choose to become leaders, they were pretty much handed that role because they have obligations to fulfill. Of course, they’ll do their utmost to do their job, but often at the expense of their own well being.
That’s why we’re all worried about Safiyya. It’s bad enough that the Lunar Rainforest affairs are a huge source of stress for her, and now her personal life seems to be falling apart too. Ambrosia and Olive suspected that something had come between Aymn and Safiyya as they have grown distant over the past year. Shutting those close to you out and shouldering the burden only for yourself is never a good sign. Aymn tried his best to reach out to her, but I think this is just one of those things where it’s not entirely anyone’s fault, just a bunch of complicated circumstances tangled up together to create a situation where everyone loses out.
Could things have been handled differently? Yes, I believe so - to some extent. There’s really no way of knowing, so I won’t go down that route. That’s not to say that they didn’t try - I think they handled things as best as they can. It could be worse, should be better - again, there’s no use going back and forth on the past. What matters now is the present and what we can do about it.
I think Madeleine, Della, and Hongxia understand Safiyya’s struggles with being in a position that they never really wanted or felt like they deserved. It’s bad enough dealing with a lot of pressure from all around, it’s even worse when you don’t have the option to step away. I mean, you can, but then everyone will hate you for letting everyone down because your existence is basically tied to your ability to fulfill a specific role, which I know is not a good thing.
People aren’t tools, weapons, or pawns, they’re just people. Sure, some end up with more burdens and responsibilities than others due to birthright or whatever, but it’s not right to define them as their purpose and nothing else. I can’t imagine what it’s like being told since you were born that you have to be x, y, and z, and if you fail, you’re a disappointment because so many people depend on you. Even if someone can handle the pressure, it shouldn’t be something you expect from someone all the time. No one is invincible, after all. We are all prone to fail or fall short of expectations.
Hongxia and Della didn’t have much of a choice because of their families despite the fact that they have proven that they’re not meant to be leaders. Both of them actually developed severe mental health issues from running themselves to the ground - psychosomatic paralysis and substance abuse, to name a few. Like, that’s fucking serious and absolutely not acceptable. A stressful life like that can and will kill you, which was why Della’s mother finally had enough and intervened.
Safiyya may be immortal, but she is not invincible. Hongxia was able to recognize the signs of chronic overwork because Meiying hammered it on to him when he showed the exact same signs. He said he never realized how terrifying it was for those around him to see someone running themselves to the ground until finally seeing it for himself with Safiyya. The others have seen it far too many times than they’d like to admit, but it’s the kind of thing that often gets swept under the rug for various reasons.
In other words, if Della and Hongxia hadn’t fought hard to break away from their leadership positions, they will eventually work themselves to death. Della said her mother recently confessed to her that over the past year she had premonitions of her dying, which is naturally a parent’s worst nightmare. Not just from overwork or illness, murder or assassination’s another thing to worry about, especially if you’re high up there in terms of influence and politics. With one foot already in a grave, unless there’s an intervention, it won’t be long before they fall.
Hongxia said it was similar with his mother, and Meiying, Aiwen, and his sister in law, all of them putting it bluntly that he was going to wind up dead in a few years if he kept trying to shoulder all the responsibility on himself. While his brother means well and appointed him as the Xuelin for a reason, it’s just not something he wants out of life, which is why he’s been in kind of a weird position in terms of his status within the pavilion. Now that Hongxia’s on medical leave for an indefinite amount of time, that will make the rift between him and the others much more wider.
He’s got a lot to deal with too when he has to go back home, but right now his physical and mental health takes priority. Leaving home was the right choice for him as he’s no longer in a stressful environment, though that doesn’t change the fact that there are still a lot of things that need to still be addressed. Now he’s even more determined to not succeed his brother, which is a whole ‘nother issue that makes his whole situation even more complicated.
Well, the best Hongxia and everyone else can do is take it one day at a time. I don’t think it’s a good idea for him to go back anytime soon. He said so himself that he’s afraid that the second he gets home, his headaches and paralysis will return, and he’s probably right. I can’t comment on Qiangshou’s politics, but surely, they can work something out? I’m sure Hongxia’s not the only one who feels out of place in the Senlin Pavilion, though he’s probably one of the very few who not only actively fights back, but also has supporters by his side who care about his wellbeing over status and obligation.
Madeleine and Della were lucky in the sense that they were freed from the shackles that bound them for most of their lives. Della had aspirations to become an Eagle Stellaron, only to become disillusioned when she realized that the organization as a whole was corrupt. To make matters worse, her own parents were complicit, and so she was in a difficult position. There was also that whole thing with her friend being murdered by a captain who apparently had a habit of silencing those who didn’t see eye to eye with the Stellarons. If she wasn’t already so distrustful of most of her colleagues, she could have become one of his victims too.
Basically, it was a toxic environment where the people around her were actively driving her to her grave. And she was far from the only one who was a victim - there were a lot more like her who were not as fortunate. At least because of her mother’s status, Della had some sort of immunity, as in, most of her tormenters knew exactly how far to push her around without angering their superior. Sadly, most of the other Stellarons weren’t so lucky to be born to such families, and a good number of them ended up quitting or wound up dead in a matter of years.
For Della, cutting ties with the Eagle Stellarons and having a hand in their downfall was the right choice. She knew what she was doing by throwing herself into the crossfire, that she was never liked by her colleagues anyway, so being branded as a traitor is nothing compared to what they put her through. Although things have quieted down, she still has to be on her guard. Nothing too serious has happened, but she’s had some close calls with former acquaintances who failed to get a rise out of her. That’s just something she’ll have to deal with for possibly the rest of her life. The way she sees it, that’s a small price to pay for her freedom.
Madeleine was essentially created as a pawn and yet she willingly let herself be used that way because of her strong sense of justice. While she has no regrets for many of her actions, she does resent her loss of freedom and autonomy over the past few centuries, which really took a toll on her. If Connie and Fontaine hadn’t intervened with fate and essentially pushed things along, she’d probably lose herself completely with all the deception she had to put up with.
Just because she was willing to get blood on her hands doesn’t mean she’s okay with it, but sometimes you have to take an impartial and somewhat cold stance in order to get shit done, even if it makes you an enemy to some. As much as she wishes she could be an idealist like Safiyya, to try to find a way to work things out so everyone wins and no one ever gets hurt, Madeleine knows that it’s just simply impossible. Not everyone is willing to make sacrifices for the greater good.
Sometimes you have to be the bad guy, the cynic, the traitor, or whatever. Sometimes you have to play dirty, burn a few bridges along the way, manipulate the general public so they see things in your favor. I’m not saying that I necessarily approve of that, but there are times when you have to do the hard thing if you want to see certain results.
Most of the time, it’s not personal, it’s just someone doing their job, so I think when personal feelings gets involved, that muddies everything up. That’s probably why Safiyya and Madeleine felt the need to isolate themselves to avoid dealing with complicated feelings. I get why they feel the need to distance themselves and shoulder their burdens alone, but that doesn’t mean they should, not if they keep sacrificing themselves for the greater good.
It’s understandable why Madeleine doesn’t want Safiyya to go down the same road she did. Like her, Safiyya was created for a purpose and ended up with a lot more burdens than she bargained before thanks to unseen circumstances such as her predecessor’s death. However, unlike Madeleine and Nahla - who came to her position in a similar way - Safiyya was completely unprepared, which probably explains her hesitancy and avoidance for any sort of conflict.
Between the three, Nahla has proven to be a capable leader after successfully regaining control of Dharma when it fell to the wayside. The events of Adrikha were somewhat similar to the first rebellion in the Lunar Rainforest, the obvious differences being that Nahla’s faction succeeded where Safiyya’s failed in their approach not only to restore order but also maintain peace. Another major difference is that Nahla was more ambitious and driven, not by power, but because of her sense of duty and obligation driven by the fact that no one but her can do the job that was rightfully hers.
While it might seem like the best option, having Safiyya step down will create even more problems. Aymn’s probably the best choice as her successor but he considers himself an ill fit for such a role for various reasons - one being that he’s a mortal human. Although he’s well respected among his peers, there’s many who still see him as an outsider since that’s what he is to those whose families lived in the Lunar Rainforest for generations. There’s also the complicated on and off relationship between them, which most of them had already suspected, though that’s an entirely different issue.
So, it’s a lot to deal with and no one has any answers. At least they’re getting it all out in the open, hoping that their personal experiences will shed some much needed insight.
Not surprisingly, making emotional support teddy bears was therapeutic for everyone. Since we had a lot of kits, we made extras as gifts. I made one for my sister, Hongxia made three for his niece and nephews, Sadiki for Amina, Connie for Pai, as well as the rest of the Epiphany and Harmonious Cafe crew.
While working on the teddy bears and pondering about Safiyya’s situation, I remember a conversation between Madeleine and Fontaine not too long ago. He was one of those friends who took her by the shoulders and told her flat out that he couldn’t bear to watch her drive herself to her grave. It wasn’t until she got involved with the discussions regarding Safiyya when she finally understood why Fontaine was so upset with her while she merely brushed off her near death experience like it was nothing.
How terrible it is for someone to look down on themselves so much, to see themselves as only a means to end that that they’re totally okay with sacrificing themselves over and over again like they’re disposable and insignificant. Fontaine had to watch someone close to him subject herself like that for centuries, which was why he finally snapped, so to say. Like, he literally grabbed Madeleine by the shoulders - not in an aggressive way, more like clinging to someone so they’d stay because you’re afraid of them leaving you - and made her promise to live a long, uncomplicated, and happy life.
Such a seemingly simple thing, yet at times it’s almost like asking for the impossible as there are no guarantees. She found it a bit naive, but nevertheless, she gave him her word. Maybe, she believes, if Aymn confronted her like that, being all open, and vulnerable, and honest, he’ll finally get through to her. It’ll be a difficult conversation, but a very necessary one.
For now, there’s really nothing they can do aside from trying to get through to Safiyya. Aymn feels bad for doing this behind her back, but I think he’s doing the right thing because he’s worried about her. Madeleine and Connie know from experience that having friends who are willing to intervene means that there is hope, that there is a way to work things out no matter how difficult it gets. It’s not easy, but sometimes you have to give someone a good shake before they end up self destructing and it’s too late to help them. I really hope they can get through to her.

Immersive Cyberbullying Experience Project
Description
‘Feel Her‘ is a concept for an immersive experience design that aims to shed light onto the important topic of cyberbullying in China. The project intends for viewers to understand the damage that cyberbully brings to the victims through mixed media including spatial, sound, video and the visual design.
The design consists of two parts. The first part is a participatory design aiming to let audiences realise the impact that hurtful and negative online comments can cause to individuals as a result of misleading or 'fake news' online, and asks participants to leave comments - positive or negative - on the space. Secondly, the immersive space allows the visitor to experience the emotions of victims of cyberbullying in order to understand the pain they have and start to reflect on their own future behavior online.
Process video:https://youtu.be/p0HGIPnPdOw
Inspiration
A few years ago, I personally experienced cyberbullying at the hands of Chinese netizens. It was really tough period in my life. At that time, many friends told me that the online world is virtual. “Just forget it.” But the harm and feeling I‘ve went through do exist and constantly have the bad influence, wether mental or physical.
This experience inspired me to make a project regarding this problem, to shed light onto the emotional pain and suffering of victims of cyberbullying.
First I do some research about the phenomenon of Cyberbullying.
Research
<Risk Society: Towards a New Modernity> By Ulrich Beck
<”Internet Violence": Concept, Root and Response—Based on the Perspective of Risk Society Analysis> By Fangbing Jiang
<Network Behavior Anomie> By Yi Li
Through thesis articles I learned that Cyberbullying is a kind of cyber anomie that is dominated by cyber behavior, but it will bring a series of real harm.
The space is virtual, but the damage and the subject are real. I think that the network virtual society is a new "real society".
<Checkmate? the role of gender stereotypes in the ultimate intellectual sport.> By European Journal of Social Psychology
<Cyber violence and hate speech online against women> By Policy Department for Citizens' Rights and Constitutional Affairs Directorate General for Internal Policies of the Union
We tend to "label" people based on stereotypes, which is an unconscious behavior. But if we ignore individual differences because of stereotypes, it will actually bring harm. Stereotype threat and Self-fulfilling prophecy Stereotype threat-if you are labelled negatively, you will become more and more anxious and become virtuous than usual. We are usually afraid of being in such a situation, so we are afraid of being that kind of "minority." Self-fulfilling prophecy mean that the judgments of others will more or less impress people's behavior, whether it is correct or not. Behavior confirmation (Behavior confirmation) is a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy in which the social expectations of other people will make our behavior develop in the direction that others expect. This will lead to the emergence of instigation, follow suit, and to do what the "most people" are doing in order to cater to the public.
In addition to the perpetrator, silence is also a support for cyber violence.
<Research on the cultivation of shame among middle school students> By Xiaocui Du
<Peeping: Group Symptoms and Analysis in the Internet Age>By Zhang Zhong.
Through the literature, I found that the Internet provides a space to conceal and release oneself. Youth groups (18-30) are more adapted to the rapid development of the Internet and are the main members of the current online society.
Summary:
Maybe I could set up a ‘off-domain space’ will restore the online world more (hidden identity, free speech), It’s will be more immersive to the net citizens.
Cyberbullying is a manifestation of a risky society, but China is about to enter a high-risk society, and more attention should be paid to the environment of the network society. Thus,I will focus my audience in Chinese net citizens.
‘Hated in the Nation’  By Black Mirror
Tumblr media
I have also absorbed inspiration from this television work. Maybe I can portray a murder/disease story of cyberbullying and let the audience understand the truth through step-by-step exploration? Let the project became more storytelling.
‘People on the Internet’ By Zidong Xu
‘https://yixi.tv/#/speech/detail?id=585’
Through Zidong Xu’s ’YiXi’ speech (an equivalent of TED in China) ’People on the Internet’, I found that cyberbullying is an all-too-frequent occurrence in China which far too many people choose not to prevent, even becoming the perpetrator. It made me want to awaken people to re-examine the phenomenon of cyberbullying.
Tumblr media
<Non-gender celebrities Yang juanjuan> By Junbin Yang
Designer Junbin Yang created a genderless person from the future, by recording his daily lifestyle to call on people to break the gender stereotype.
Also,from https://thanetwriters.com ‘The Advantages and Disadvantages of First-Person Perspective’ By Seb Reilly,I realized that the beauty of first-person narrative is that it can make users feel more immersed and users as a whole are more willing to believe this story.
It led me to think about create a victim of cyberbullying, let my audience to experience what she/he has been experienced. It could let audience have better understand from the victim.
<WHO SPEAKS, WHO LISTENS, WHO ACTS: A NEW MODEL FOR UNDERSTANDING NARRATIVE> By Matthew T. DelConte, M.A.
<Three Stories: An Exploration of Voice and Perspective in the Fiction Narrative> By Brenna A. Hosman
These two articles  discussed the influence of narrative person on readers. I think that first-person narrative can enhance the experience of visitors, and can more empathize and look at problems from the perspective of narrative.
‘If we visualize cyber violence into reality…’ By Human laboratory
https://www.youtube.com/watchv=2peN61HC0F8https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2peN61HC0F8
Tumblr media
This work attempts to bring cyberbullying into the real world. I could see the emotional changes of the victims from beginning to end. The immerse experience really works in bring people into this situation, also creating a mutual experience for both the viewer and victim.
It led me to think that participatory design and immersion may be a good way to get audiences to empathize with the victims, in order to make them reflect.
<Re-Sculpt> By Thomas Hirschhorn
Tumblr media
The designer makes a very strong interactive space. The particpation of the visitor by destroying the space is part of the artwork. And through Tim Brown's Ted Talk 'Designers think big', this inspired me to create a space with high degree of participation, and let visitors explore freely through a series of interactive designs. Additionally,‘Adult participatory arts – Thinking it through’ and https://participedia.net/method/4451 and By Arts Council England showed the evidence that participatory design is a great way to connected the audience and the designer‘s work closer.
It led me to think that every one of us might actually be contributing to cyberbullying somehow. Not only would this enhance immersion, but it could also create more strong empathy towards victims afterwards.
‘Cyber cocoon kids’ Designed by Yong Xie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mR0Yl1mAE_E
Tumblr media
Cyber Cocoo Kids visualizes the issue of internet safety by creating a cage that block kids from the real world.
The visualization of the internet and the installation inspired me to think about using see-through materal to immitate the the online enviroment.
Combined with previous research, I started to consider the need to create a space to immitate cyberbullying.
‘This is what it feels like’   By Lopez
https://thisiswhatitfeelslikeproject.com/about
Tumblr media
The concept of using the sound recording to hear the language harassment. It inspired me that recording the phone call of victims during the cyberbully period would be quite strong for the immersive experience.
‘The beauty of data visualization’ By David McCandless https://www.ted.com/search?q=data+visualiazation
Tumblr media
We can see the rules and connections in visual information, and then design this information to make it more meaningful. Information visualization can be used to tell stories, or allow us to focus on that important information, and at the same time, it can solve the problem of over-saturated information. Maybe I can say that the emotions of the victim can be visualized in some way? So that people can better understand the feelings of victims.
‘When online shaming goes too far’ By Jon Ronson
<https://www.ted.com/talks/jon_ronson_when_online_shaming_goes_too_far#t-396702>
Tumblr media
Jon Reson shared the incident of a woman being abused online on Twitter. This way of reposting led to this woman with only 170 fans on the hot search. And those who want to help this female voice are also attacked by larger groups of cyberbullying. I want to know which group is more vulnerable to cyberbullying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through interviews(sample:21 female: 14 male: 7)
I found that in the online world, most people will pre-emptively have a bad definition or impression of a person, and many people will tell me that cyberbulling is often caused by misleading news. Combine with secondary research (‘Research on Media Violence from the Perspective of Gender’ By Hongxia Fan)I found that compared with men, women are more likely to be victims of cyberbullying.
Thus I decided to choose woman as an example of the victim to continue the project. Also, create a misleading news that might cause cyberbullying. Hoping I could restore cyberbullying in reailty.
Design concept
I decide to make an immersive space design to get young Chinese netizens who are active in social networks to experience the effects of cyberbullying.
Design process
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stpe 1 Build an empty space
Stpe 2 Show audience a misleading news report, then let them to leave comments on the wall.
Stpe 3 Audience will feel cyberbully through:video, sound recordings and space and emotion note (visualize the emotion).
'The Form of Emotive Design’ By Philippa Mothersill.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through this research, I found that emotion and shape are related. This inspired me to design a note to simulate the emotional changes of victims of cyberbully.
Then I engaged people(37)to draw some sketches that represent the emotions of the victim, such as anger, sorrow, ect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then I did some suumary and drew some sketches, then I created some graphics to test with audience.
Tumblr media
At first,I drew color inspiration form‘The Atlas of Emotions’ By Paul Ekman.  I use red to represent strong emotions such as anger, but after user testing, I was told that black and white can form a strong contrast. So I change the color to black and white.
Tumblr media
Finally, I came out with 7 graphics which represent the main emotions of a victim from day 1 to day 7.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I completed the emotion note and let user to see thesis graphics. According to user’s feedback, the graphics can make motion effect, so that could be more convenient for audiences to understand the victim.
So I made a motion graphic video https://youtu.be/QLAsL14oN84
Dynamic effects change according to different emotions. For example, the emotion of collapse will use particle effects.
Tumblr media
Based on these emotions, I acted in a video that simulated the emotional changes of the victim, and combined with dynamic video.
Performance video https://youtu.be/21VlpSb0roo
Tumblr media
I was inspired by ’Caught in the Web’ By Kaige Chen, also combined my own experience to create a news report that might cause cyberbullying. This news is about a female college student(the victim)beating an old in the street. I used the layout of the newspaper to design this news.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before building the space, I also tested transparent materials. I mainly want to study which transparent material can make writing or painting more convenient.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Process of establish the space
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Final output
Day1, I provide some tools( Brush or spray paint)to let visitors leave their commets - positive or negative - on the wall after reading the newspaper, it showed that most of these comments are negative.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day2 : I invited another audience to get in the space, and understand, feel what the audience‘s have been went through——from mixed media.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
User feedback:
1. The layout of reports can be more like the online commets, which will help people have a better understand that it’s a network event. 2. 7 emotional graphics could let people feel more empathetic.3. Motion graphic video can be more prominent, sound record could be more strong.
Self-reflection:
1. The name of ‘Feel Her’ could be better, I will change it later.2. Technologies such as AR or VR can make these emotional graphics better viewed.3. The experience space can be more like the online world, I can explore more about structure and material.4. This project have the potential to become a branding that aiti-cyberbullying, combine immersion with online interactive together.

Thin Legs and High Blood Pressure
Tumblr media
MedicalResearch.com Interview with: Zhen Yang MD PhD Department of Endocrinology, Xinhua Hospital Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine Shanghai, China   MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? Response: Hypertension is a major public health problem affecting more than 1 billion people worldwide. And it is the leading cause of mortality and disability globally. Startlingly, more than half of people with elevated blood pressure were unaware of their hypertensive status in numerous surveys, partly owing to hypertension rarely shows symptoms in the early stages. Hence, hypertension is a silent killer. MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings? Response: In contrast to upper-body obesity, lower-body obesity exhibited a favorable metabolic profile. And a small thigh circumference was associated with an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the relationship between thigh circumference and blood pressure. A cross-sectional study among 9,520 individuals aged 40 years and older was conducted. Then, we found that large thigh circumference is significantly and independently associated with a lower prevalence of hypertension in overweight and obese individuals. MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report? Response: Our findings highlight the importance of paying more attention to overweight and obese individuals with small thigh circumference (thin legs) in the early identification and precise prevention of hypertension and cardiometabolic disorders. MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?  Response: I think we should be brave to question in the future scientific research, look at the problem dialectically, diligent in practice, and cannot take it for granted in future research. ‘What if We All Get Sick?’: Coronavirus Strains China’s Health System
Tumblr media
After suffering from a fever and breathing problems for more than 15 days, Xiao Shibing, a 51-year-old resident of Wuhan, China, finally sought help at a hospital. Despite the symptoms, he was not tested for the new coronavirus — a lapse suggesting that there may be far more cases of the virus than are being officially reported.Instead, Mr. Xiao was told that he had a viral chest infection, so he went back home. As he grew sicker, he went to three other hospitals. But they told him they did not have enough beds.Like many of the thousands of Chinese patients who are concerned about the new coronavirus, Mr. Xiao is scrambling to get help from a health care system straining to serve even the basic needs of patients.“It is like kicking a ball from here to there,” said his wife, Feng Xiu.Mr. Xiao, who was eventually hospitalized on Sunday — about a week after his initial attempt — still hasn’t been tested for the pneumonialike virus. As it struggles to combat a coronavirus epidemic that has sickened more than 2,700 people and killed 80, the Chinese government is relying on a medical system that is overburdened and overwhelmed even in normal times. While other parts of everyday life in China have significantly improved in the past decade, the quality of health care has stagnated. In major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, many people have to stand in line in the wee hours of the morning to secure appointments with doctors. When they do get an appointment, patients get only a couple of minutes with a doctor. During flu season, residents set up camp overnight with blankets in hospital corridors.China does not have a functioning primary care system, so most people flock to hospitals. On an ordinary day, doctors are frustrated and exhausted as they see as many as 200 patients. Those weaknesses are most pronounced in the poorer areas of China — like Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus. Panicked residents of the city are heading to the hospitals if they have any sign of a cold or cough. Videos circulating on Chinese social media show doctors straining to handle the enormous workload and hospital corridors loaded with patients, some of whom appear to be dead.Despite having dealt with the SARS coronavirus nearly two decades ago, many Chinese hospitals in smaller cities are not fully prepared to deal with a major outbreak like the current virus. Wuhan hospitals have posted messages online urgently appealing for medical equipment. The situation is even more desperate in poorer, rural areas nearby.Last week, eight hospitals in Hubei Province — where Wuhan is situated and where most of the cases have appeared — put out a call for N95 masks, goggles, surgical masks and surgical gowns. In the absence of proper equipment, some medical workers have resorted to cutting plastic folders to jury-rig goggles.Yanzhong Huang, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations, said that China had invested a lot in building a robust public health infrastructure in the wake of SARS and that many of them were mostly well equipped to deal with infectious diseases.“But they apparently didn’t anticipate something so sudden, so acute and so tremendous,” he said. The government’s response to the crisis could exacerbate the problems. Across China, the authorities are sealing off cities, closing down schools and checking on residents. But the lockdown — affecting 56 million people — could make it difficult to get medical supplies to hospitals that desperately need them.Chinese officials have acknowledged that they are struggling to deal with the outbreak. At a news conference last week, the Wuhan health commission said there were long lines and a shortage of beds. In response, it said it had designated hospitals as “fever clinics” for people to go to for treatment. With medical facilities in short supply, the local government has also pledged to build a new 1,000-bed hospital in 10 days, and vowed that another new 1,300-bed hospital would be ready by the middle of next month. It is taking a page out of the government’s playbook during SARS, when it built a new hospital in Beijing in just a week.Yet it is still not clear that there will be sufficient beds to deal with the virus, which remains highly contagious.Chen Xi, an assistant professor of health policy and economics at the Yale School of Public Health, said it was more important to have a working system of family doctors who can act as gatekeepers for the hospitals.“Without an efficient screening process,” he said, “these two hospitals would not be very effective.”The central government is under increasing pressure to show that it is adequately coping with the crisis. On Monday, Premier Li Keqiang, who has been assigned to oversee the national response to the outbreak, visited Wuhan to inspect efforts to contain the disease. He pledged to provide local health centers with 20,000 pairs of safety goggles. As the government scrambles to contain the outbreak, the sick are just trying to get medical attention.Cai Pei, 41, of Wuhan, said his wife had begun coughing and developed a fever three days ago. He wrote on Weibo, a popular social media platform, that hospitals would not admit her, and that he had difficulty finding masks and cold medicine in pharmacies.Making matters worse, three Chinese medical companies have said that they do not have the capacity to make enough test kits for the new coronavirus, according to local news media reports.Mr. Cai and his wife still do not know whether she is infected with the coronavirus or another more common ailment.“Sometimes I can only hide and cry, but I couldn’t tell her and had to reassure her that it is not the virus,” Mr. Cai said by telephone. “It is very scary. If it’s real, we have a child and elderly parents at home. What if we all get sick?”With no proven drugs to treat the new virus, the health authorities have told doctors to prescribe a combination of treatments — anti-viral H.I.V. drugs as well as traditional Chinese medicine — to patients. Some of the medicines being prescribed are a mixture of ingredients like buffalo horn, jasmine and honeysuckle as well as anti-viral H.I.V. drugs like Lopinavir and Ritonavir. As happened with SARS, traditional Chinese medicine — an industry that the government has pledged to develop — is prominently being touted as a way to treat this new coronavirus. But there is no clinical evidence that the gallstones of cattle, the roots of plants and licorice could work in combating it.Journals have published studies by Chinese scientists saying that traditional Chinese medicine helped alleviate symptoms of SARS. China’s ministry of science and technology said in 2003 that it had found banlangen, the root of the woad plant, as well as a liquid made up of ingredients like cholic acid, jasmine, buffalo horn and honeysuckle to be effective in curing an acute inflammation of the lungs.“There has never been a good antiviral agent, so that means that people would try things that have some effect,” said Dominic Dwyer, a medical virologist at the University of Sydney. “But there’s no evidence of significant benefits with any antiviral drugs or traditional Chinese medicine.”The problem with finding a drug that can effectively fight an infectious disease like this coronavirus, SARS or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome is that it needs to be tested in sufficient numbers in a randomized way in proper clinical trials. Patients must also give informed consent.“That is very difficult in an outbreak situation,” said Kanta Subbarao, a senior researcher on respiratory illnesses at the Doherty Institute in Melbourne, Australia. In Wuhan, Mr. Xiao’s daughter, Xiao Hongxia, said her father had been diagnosed with severe pneumonia and was now labeled a “highly suspicious case.” He is relying on ordinary fever medicines and anti-inflammatory drugs, she said.“There is no special medicine for the coronavirus so far,” Ms. Xiao said, “so we can only rely on the patient’s own immunity.”Amber Wang, Yiwei Wang and Elsie Chen contributed research.
