Okay so I haven't read the Apollo books but I did read the Magnus Chase books and like, not to sound defensive as someone who has been a Mark Oshiro fan for years, but uh, the writing was less bad and less cringe than the Percy Jackson books usually are. What are people talking about, saying The Sun and the Star is particularly cringe with particularly bad writing and particularly noticeable plot holes? Is this the first Percy Jackson-related book you've read as an adult? Because I hate to break it to you, but quality prose or lack of plot holes has never been these series' particular strengths.
#It made me laugh. It made me cry. It made my heart melt. What more could I want?#It even had a cat!#Yeah I thought some of the last few pages had a particularly therapy-like way-too-self-aware tone to some of the dialogue but like#honestly truly much better than I expect from this series.#And for people talking about Nico being OOCâ a) he has grown and matured!#b) we get a *lot* more in his head/from his PoV than normal#and c) literally he is hanging out with his BOYFRIEND of a YEAR and he is STILL PRICKLY AND CLOSED OFF AND SENSITIVE ABOUT THINGS WILL#HASN'T FIGURED OUT.#Also this time he is actually written by a queer emo person with PTSD from childhood.#personal#liveblogging stories

â˘pairing: single dad!yunho x f. reader
â˘genre: (18+ - minors dni) strangers to lovers, single dad au | fluff, angst, eventual smut
â˘word count: 4.3k
â˘chapter content/warnings: cussing, the clichĂŠ coffee incident pls forgive me lol, parents pushing expectations, honestly not much but an intro to y/n and her family - bit of a filler chap!
"Can you visit mom and dad this weekend with me?" You nibble on the rest of your ramen while you wait for your brother to respond. You're currently sitting on a table outside near the trees, taking your lunch under the shade.
"Can't. I have plans with the boys."
"Wonwoo." You sigh.
"What? I promise, I'll head up there the weekend after. You can come with if you want. Sorry. I just planned this ahead of time and can't go back on my word now."
"Fine." You sip your water and toss your trash onto your tray before standing and throwing it into the appropriate bins.
"What, has mom and dad been on you again about us not visiting?"
"Kinda, yeah? You know how they always make passive aggressive comments because we don't come to see them often." You grab another cup of coffee, taking your time mixing it with half and half and some sugar. "It's always 'you two are always too busy for your parents!' or a 'it doesn't even take long to visit your parents!'" Your younger brother sighs as you quietly hand over some cash to the mobile coffee shop attendant.
"I know, but they also don't understand we've got our own things going on, too."
"I guess, yeah." You lick your lips and take a small sip, being careful enough to not burn your tongue from the scorching temp. "We really should do better, though."
It's not that your parents were bad. In fact, your parents were amazing. They had brought up both you and your younger brother comfortably and happily, sending you both to the best schools and supporting you until you two were able to fully walk on your own two feet, soar high with your own two wings.
It truly was just life.
You had gotten busy; always working at the hospital, growing from the bottom up, barely taking any of your vacation or sick days. If you did, it was because you had to or else you'd reach your max, or because you truly were rotting away in your death bed from a bad flu or food poisoning.
Otherwise, you were always at work. You were always with your girls. You were always going to lagree or bootcamp style studio classes. You were always doing something to occupy your timeâ mainly work. And the same thing goes for your brother, younger than you by 2 years.
He's just a boy.
But, he's your brother and you're incredibly close to him. He was always listening, was always good growing up. Would always protect you, especially from dumb boys and fake friends. He got good grades and went to college overseas before moving back home and settling down. Since then, he's always learned how to be on his feetâ barely ever staying stationary. He, too, was always out with his boys. Working as a full-time software engineer, working out. Traveling when he gets the chance. Dating every now and then. But, you do love that he's living life and spending time with good people. He seems to have a good balance between his work and personal lives, which makes you happy.
It's just unfortunate that you two can't seem to manage slipping in more time with your parents. You both had agreed to do better about it, especially with your parents getting older.
"Are you still gonna see them this weekend, or are you gonna wait for me?"
"Yeah, I'll pop in for a second. I already told them I'd swing by."
"Hm." He hums. "Tell them we'll stop by for longer next weekend."
"Yeah, after I get the earful first."Â
"They won't." He clears his throat. "So, how's work been? Ate lunch well?"
"Yeah, I did. Work's been kinda crazy. They're opening this new department at the main hospital and it's expanding into the pediatrics side, too. We've been gearing up for it."
"Oh, really?" You nod as if your brother can see you.
"Yeah. They've been working with adult patients for their two studies, but they're going to start their pediatrics study soon. Pending on the IRB approval. But, once that's all good, they're hoping to secure their first patient, and we need to have everything ready to go."
"That's pretty cool."
"It is, but kinda hectic. Too many moving parts and people involved. It's a lot to keep up with."
"I'm sure you'll handle it well. You always do." You let out a small sigh before checking your watch and slowly walking back towards the peds hospital.Â
"Hope so. Work's been okay for you?" He chuckles.
"Same old! Nothing much has changed. Not like that, anyway."
"I see. So, what happened to that one girl you were seeing recently?"
"Uh, we're just better off as friends."
"Better keep that to yourself before mom starts setting you up on blind dates."
"Same goes for you. She'd probably go for you first. Been tryna marry you off." You roll your eyes.
"It's not my priority and she doesn't get that."
"She wants a grand baby and lowkey, I kinda want a nephew or niece to spoil, too."Â
"You're no help." He snorts. "Anyway, I gotta head back to my office and get some work done, I got a big meeting for that new department later today."
"Alright. Well, text me when you get home and try to take it easy."
"I will, you too, punk." Wonwoo chuckles. "Love you."
"Love you too!" And with that, the call ends. Your eyes are glued to your phone as you continue to walk back towards the hospital. The weather isn't too bad today, a slight breeze hitting your skin to balance out the warmth from the sun. You continue to switch between keeping your eyes in front, back down to your phone as you scroll through social media to catch up to things you've missed over the past few hours. When you finally get into view of the familiar building and the side lobby entrance, you slip in and head straight to the elevator without paying much attentionâ especially when it dings and slides the doors open for the individual behind to step out. You feel a soft thud; your body slightly coming into contact with theirs, causing some of your coffee to spill out of the opening on the lid.Â
"Ohâ oh shit, I'm so sorry!" You look at the tall figure, wide-eyed as you survey his outfit to make sure your coffee didn't spill everywhere on his jacket.
"You're good." He says, eyes coming down to his jacket. There's a few drops of coffee dripping down near the zipper, but nothing that can't be fixed.
"I'm soooo sorry." You repeat as you dab a napkin at his jacket.
"No, seriously. It's fine. You're good." He laughs, brushing you off in a friendly manner. "Nothing laundry can't fix."
"Still another piece to add to your load." You look up at him and slightly pout. "Sorry."
"Maybe just be careful next time?" He gives you a small smile before he brushes past and out of the elevators. You realize he's got his large hand still propped up to prevent the elevator doors from closing on you, and you can't help but feel extra embarrassed. You do a tiny nod before he lets out a small chuckle and walks away, allowing you to be in your peace as you slip into the elevator and watch the doors close in front of you.
It just had to be him.
you: i almost spilled my coffee on a really cute guy âšď¸
wonwoo:Â he'll def never come near you again. way to go sis đ
you:Â you're a piece of shit
wonwoo: đĽ°
You click your teeth and sigh as you step out of the elevator and onto your floor. You had been working as project manager supporting the pediatrics unit for about a year and a half now, starting at the hospital a few years ago as an admin associate and slowly working your way up.
"What? What's wrong, hun?" Your coworker and also one of your childhood bestfriends, Noeul, chimes in. She works as an HR manager, but her team sits nearbyâ giving you two the numerous opportunities to chit-chat and catch up in between meetings and tasks.
"I almost spilled my coffee on some really cute guy." She purses her lips together before giving you a toothless smile.
"I mean, you didn't, right?"
"No. Maybe a few drops. Now he'll have another piece of laundry to add to his load. All because of me."
"That's a good way to be memorable." You sigh. "I'm sure he wished he got your number."
"Wow, you're the complete opposite of my brother and I love that." She laughs.
"Of course, I'll always support you."
"How'd your meeting go?" She shakes her head.
"I don't know. So many sensitive issues. I think they only keep escalating and getting worse."
"Are you still dealing with that one manager and her staff member that weren't getting along?"
"Yup. That's exactly the thing that's getting worse."
"Sheesh. I hope they find middle ground soon, or at least find new avenues so they don't have to work with each other."
"Hope so too!" She looks at you. "When's your big meeting with the hospital people?"
"Hm." You hum and check your watch. "In the next hour." You settle at your desk and she follows along, sitting on the edge of the corner. "My inbox blew up over lunch so I gotta take care of a few things before I head over." You sip on your coffee.
"My busy bee." You give her a look. "Goodluck! Let me know how the meeting goes. I've gotta file a few reports and hop into a few other meetings myself. I'll see you later for a quick break?" You give her a small smile.
"Goodluck to you, too." She blows you a little kiss before she's prancing away to her desk, greeting people on the way over. You busy yourself before you need to start packing up and heading over to the main hospital, drowning in a few urgent emails that came in over your lunch break. Time sure flies when your brain is scattered everywhere, your to-do list seemingly never-ending and tossing you in a million different places at once.Â
You gather your things about 10 minutes before the meeting, which, doesn't give you much wiggle room in case you get lost. You don't go to the main hospital often, and you're not even sure if you have access to the room or how all of this would work. You are familiar with a few people also attending the meeting, but they're equally just as busy and are probably coming from other commitments.Â
You let out a small breath as you power walk over to the main hospital, happy you're at least getting your steps in for the day. You trickle into the huge lobby along with others, turning towards the left where the elevators are located. You press the button, waiting alongside a visitor as the elevator makes its way down from the 6th floor. You step in and patiently wait off to the side, checking your work calendar on your phone to make sure the meeting was indeed today.
Why does it feel like you're the only one heading over?
Were you the only one late at this point?
You step out of the elevator once you make it up to the 7th floor, pausing in your steps becauseâ where the fuck do you go now? It was such a maze in this hospital, you didn't know whether to go left or right; the numbers on the doors skipping from one number to another. You turn to you right just because you go with your gut, hearing a trail of soft voices as you finally see a group of people heading towards a huge conference room further down [and definitely closer to your left had you just turned that way]. You pick up your pace, nodding and sending soft smiles to the familiar faces that catch you through the window of the room as they settle into their seats. Rushing over, someone is stationed at the doorâ probably waiting for you to make it inside.
"Thank youâ oh, hi." You look up at the same, tall figure you damn near spilled your entire cup of coffee on.
"Hi." He gives you a toothless smile as he holds the door open for you. "Well, at least you aren't ramming into me with your cup of coffee this time." He jokes and you can't help but feel the heat rise to your cheeks.
"Yeah, mm'sorry about that still." You wince and slightly pout.
"I'm just joking. No worries. It happens." He smiles down at you, waiting for you to walk into the conference room. You give him another subtle, short bow before slipping into a chair on the opposite side of the table. You watch as he greets people coming into the room, a bit confused as to why he's still standing by the door until he finally sees the face he's been looking for.Â
He's got some kind of wit, some charm. Can't deny it's pretty attractive.
And to your surprise, he plops down in the seat next to you, followed by one of his team members [the said face he'd been looking for] you assume.
"Hope you don't mind."
"No, not at all." He gives you another toothless smile before eyeing your badge.Â
"Nice to meet you, Y/N." He puts out a hand for you to shake. "Yunho."
"Nice to meet you as well, Yunho." You shyly respond. "At least I don't have to call you the guy I almost spilled all my coffee on anymore."
"Yeah, no." He laughs. "This is Taehyun, my team lead. Taehyun, Y/N." You and Taehyun give each other small, curt bows just as the higher ups step in and settle at the front of the room.Â
"Hey everyone! Thanks for meeting. I know everyone is super busy so it's much appreciated." Yoori says as she flips her laptop open and pulls up the agenda slide on the powerpoint presentation. The meeting kicks off with small introductions around the table since a lot of people hadn't worked together like this, especially you and a select others mainly supporting pediatrics. When Yunho introduces himself, you find yourself enjoying the way he speaks. He's got a deep tone, but nothing off-putting. He speaks lightly and positively, chuckling in between statements.
Yeah, he's def got a witty charm to him.
When it's your turn to speak, you can feel Yunho's eyes from the side. He's paying attention and listening closely even if these are quick introductions to the team. He notices the way you shyly smile at those around you, still managing to speak clearly and concisely despite your nervousness that's physically manifesting in the way that your hands tug on the material of your jeans, fiddling with your fingers underneath the table in between the conversation.
Cute.
Then, after the light, airy introduction portion, the presentation gets a lot more technical, and you find that you're actually more involved in this than you expected. You're being asked to oversee the development of the clinical trial room in the pediatric wing, along with scheduling biweekly meetings to discuss updates. Making sure all required attendees are at the meetings and driving things forward. Coordinating across calendars, providing updates every step of the way.
And things seem to be picking up, moving real fast. Things were stalled and slow just a few months ago; now, it's all gas, no brakes.
When it comes to dealing with the ordering structure and IT developments, Yunho takes the lead and discusses the current updates and how they're still figuring out a few tweaks. Yoori is diligently taking notes on her own laptop, along with everyone else who is clarifying through questions of their own.
"Y/N, can you please work with Yunho and his team and the clinical informatics team to make sure the patient ordering enhancements will be taken care of and pushed through? Along with securing the data storage and network? I'll send you the list of required attendees that need to be at each meeting to help push these efforts forward. Let's prioritize this and try to get that done within the next week." You nod, glancing over to Yunho afterwards. He's got his chin resting on the palm of his hand and his eyes dart down to you. His brows perk up before he gives you a tiny, toothless smile. You feel your hands get sweaty from the look alone, so you divert your attention back to your laptopâ typing up the rest of your notes on the side. Yunho can't help but glance over at your incredibly organized notes and the way your emails are categorized; all the folders within folders.Â
Never-ending folders.
Definitely Type A.Â
He does like that, though. Can't help but feel a little endeared by it.Â
As the hour long meeting progresses, you feel yourself getting slightly overwhelmed by your growing task list. You can't help but feel an itch to get to your desk to scribble in your planner and get your thoughts organized.Â
And as soon as the meeting ends, you cut out with quick goodbyes before rushing over to your office. Yunho was hoping to catch you afterwards to talk a little more, but he watches as you leave, the opportunity now a long gone thought.Â
"Where'd you go?" Sian, your other good friend, asks. She's in the finance department, and typically comes over to check in with you and Noeul, especially when she has to drop off some mail for the peds hospital. "You and Noeul were both gone."
"I had that meeting, remember?"
"Oh shit, yeah. How'd it go?"
"I don't know." You plop onto your desk and let out a huff, pulling your planner from your bag before pulling up your notes in the cloud on your desktop computer. "So many things to do and everything feels so urgent." You've already got a few people to meet, along with pushing the operational aspect of this huge project. You've got your hands tied.
"Wow, they're moving fast with this."
"Yeah, very." You shake your head as you write out your thoughts, suddenly pausing to look back up at her as she fiddles with the figurines on your desk. "Hey, do you know the IT managers well?"
"Most of them, yeah."
"Do you know Yunho?"
"Jeong Yunho?" You shrug since you didn't really catch his badge on him. "He's the only Yunho I know of. How could you not know him?"
"Girl, I'm mostly on the peds side, I rarely come to that end." You giggle.
"He's handsome as hell. Tall. Super nice and helpful. Him and his team are so good about coming to the rescue ASAP." Sian nudges you and wiggles her eyebrow. "He's a single dad. I believe his daughter is 10? 11? Probably 11."
"Mm, dad of a pre-teen girl."
"Hey. He's making it." Sian shrugs. "Heard he's a really good father despite losing his wife years ago. I'm sure it must have been incredibly hard." You nod.
"Yeah, I can only imagine."
"He's good friends with Park Seonghwa from marketing. I think they're besties or something." You nod.Â
"I only know Seonghwa from the one interview I did with him when we did the remodeling project at the peds oncology unit. After that, barely have spoken a word to him."
"He's a little hottie, too. But, I heard he's got a thing going on with Yoori."
"Yoori? Like.. Director Yoori?" Sian nods.
"They're so weird about it, though. Definitely not known publicly, but people have seen them out together a select few times. Or, seeing Seonghwa go to her house."
"Nosey." You laugh.
"Well, it's definitely a small world around here."Â
"Hm." You hum. "So interesting, especially after I just saw her. I would have never suspected."
"What about Yunho, though?"
"First, I almost spilled my coffee on him this morning." Sian nods.
"Why am I not surprised?"
"I'm not that clumsy."Â
"Mmkay." Sian laughs. "How much coffee?"
"A few drops." You make a face. "And then he ended up being in the meeting and sitting right next to me."Â
"See, big hospital but small world." You chuckle.Â
"Feels like college."
"Yeah."
"Speaking of Yunho." You furrow your brows when you see a little notification pop up in your Slack app.
yunho: hey!Â
you: hi there! you found me!
yunho: đ sorry, i tried to catch you after the meeting but you rushed out.Â
you: oops, yeah. i just had a few things to catch up on.Â
yunho: all good! do you wanna schedule some time to meet before scheduling the wider meeting with everyone else? i can walk you through everything so we're on the same page.
you: sure, yeah! that'd be helpful. i'm pretty free next week. i just prefer not to schedule anything over lunch if it can be helped. đ
yunho: i'm the same, don't trip. lol. i'll send you an invite for early next week. what time do you get in usually?
you: mm, around 7:30-8am.
yunho: hm, wanna do 10am on monday then?
you: good with me. âşď¸ thank you, yunho!
yunho: sure thing!
"Aw, he even went out of his way to message you." Sian watches you exchange messages from behind.
"Girl, please? We need to talk about getting the patient ordering system together and fixing all the infrastructure for the peds unit."Â
"Sounds like you'll be working with him closely? I'm actually kinda surprised his team is on this. Not saying they aren't great, but they're a bit smaller and support other departments." Sian ponders for a bit. "The other IT teams are pretty swamped though, now that I think about it. They probably have the best bandwidth right now."
"Who knows. But, yeah. I guess so. His team lead was also there."
"Maybe you'll get close to Yunho."
"Maybe I won't and just get my job done while minding my own business."
"Y/N. You're single and he's single, don't be so quick to cut him off just because he has a kid. You should put yourself out there again." She teases and you roll your eyes.
"Get out." She snorts. You hate that she's a little right about it; it had been awhile since you were in a serious relationship. You might've messed around with an old college classmate a few times, but it was so casual it ended up fizzling out all by itself and that was that. It's not like you had any bad relationships, either. They just weren't a fit, but you didn't hold any bad blood towards each other. Your mom was tired of it, though. She was hoping you'd finally stay in a serious, committed relationshipâ one where you'd end up walking down the aisle, settling down in a nice family home, one or two little ones running around [or more, she wouldn't be mad about it]. Maybe that's why you also dread visiting home, because she never fails to remind you that she's waiting, and that time doesn't wait for anyone. She gives Wonwoo a piece of it, too.Â
Just not as much as you.
It's always this game of comparison, trying to one-up her friends in some fashion. It's frustrating to deal with. She didn't understand that you were good with where you were at. And even if you did long for a partner and affection in that sense, it's not like you could wish for it to happen and change your life overnight. These things take time. These things need to develop naturally, wholeheartedly, genuinely;
It wasn't your time yet, you guess.
"Anyway, are we still having our little girls night at your place tomorrow?"
"Mhm. Just gotta visit my parents first then I'm all yours."
"Ah." She nods. "Is your brother coming along?"
"Nope. Next weekend, though."
"Goodluck, sweets. Tell us all about it when we come over." Sian looks at her watch. "I was gonna try to wait for Noeul, but I guess she got caught up in some things. I should head back." You nod. "See you tomorrow, my love."
"See you." She smiles before giving your shoulder a gentle squeeze and turning on her heel to take her walk back over to the main hospital.
As the afternoon rushes by, you're able to dock off a few more things on your list before feeling satisfied enough to call it a day. You decide you're a little too tired and worn out to be driving elsewhere for food, so you'll pop into the main hospital cafeteria.
wonwoo: did you spill your coffee on anyone else today?
you: no đŤĽ
wonwoo: [sends money]
wonwoo: go get a massage or something dude, relax
you: are you serious?!
wonwoo: yeah. đ got a lil bonus from work, so if i'm eatin, you eatin too i guess.....
you: best brother award đ
wonwoo: u don't mean it
you: i do!!! ily!!! đ i'll never call you bighead again!
wonwoo: yeah u def don't mean it
You giggle to yourself, feeling comforted by your brother even at a distance. The thing about your relationship with Wonwoo is that you two were always sharing in each other's ups and downsâ good days, bad days. There was never any competition or need to feel like one had to do better than the other, thankfully; and this was a prime example of how close you and your brother were. You truly can't wait to hang out with him next week. You adore him to bits.
As you head back to the main hospital to grab food for dinner before leaving for the day [you definitely prefer the food there], you catch Yunho speaking to one of the nurses on her way out. She's blushing, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear while she laughs. Yunho looks nervous, but he's keeping himself pretty composed by the way he's smiling and laughing along with her. You brush past them quickly, and you aren't sure if Yunho noticed you or notâ not like it matters, anyway.Â
He was definitely asking her out. And by the looks of it, she said yes. She had been wanting to say yes for awhile.Â
Welp, there goes the really cute guy you spilled coffee on.Â
It wasn't your time yet, you guess.

Invisible String - Part 3
シďž: *â§ď˝Ľďž:* â§ď˝Ľďž: *â§ď˝Ľďž:* â§ď˝Ľďž: *â§ď˝Ľďž:* â§ď˝Ľďž: *â§ď˝Ľďž:* â§ď˝Ľďž: *
Pairing(s): Eris x reader
Warning(s): angst ofc, comfort. Please be advised; future parts might not be suitable for all audiences. Proceed with caution.
Summary: You'd taken the nanny position for the royal family over a year ago, not expecting what would come of it or how close you'd grow to the child you cared for. Things became tough for Eris when his wife left him and his daughter, and he found it increasingly harder to raise Riley himself. He soon realizes, you've provided a lot more than the typical job description duties for his daughter... and maybe for him, too.
SRâs Note: I added in the advisory so that younger / uncomfortable readers won't begin the series without knowing or expecting potential risks in content to come. For those who enjoy or look forward to content as such -- get excited! Nonetheless, I hope readers will enjoy this series that came to me in a dream one night. (; Much love to all.

You'd practically torn apart every drawer in your dresser and tossed out every hanger in your closet at this point. All those clothes you'd put away were for nothing; your room was a disaster. Yet, you could not find anything suitable enough for an outing with the Autumn heir and his daughter.
"The PINK one," the four year old chimed in for the hundredth time.
Her commentary was not necessarily helping, either.
"Riley, I'm not sure that the pink is my favorite," you say, and she scootches to the edge of your bed, hopping off and trotting over to your closet. She watches as you furiously flip through the remaining hangers, and her fist closes around a fistfull of marigold fabric.
"This!" She says, tugging on a rather simple milkmaid-style dress you hadn't worn in years, honestly. It was cute, it at least had some floral detailing on it.
You sighed, looking down at the beaming child. You'd done her hair first; half up, half down with a biiiig bow, just as she'd requested. A bow to match her fluffy gown and pretty flats, of course. She truly was the definition of Princess.
"I suppose-"
"Yay!" She twirled, her dress billowing out around her. She wafted toward the corner as you slid the dress on, adjusting it to fit before stepping out in front of the large mirror to inspect it in full. You'd barely laid your eyes on the full outfit before Riley bounded over to you, her mouth wide as she gasped.
"You look so pretty!" She said, wrapping her arms around your knee as her eyes met yours in the mirror. You smiled at her, leaning down to give her a hug.
"Thank you Riles! You look very pretty today too." You complimented, and she giggled, her fingers drifting through the ends of your curled hair. You decided on a few minimal jewelry pieces and flats, pushing your accessory drawer closed when a thin, marigold ribbon fell out. Riley noticed it, racing over and picing it up for you.
"We match?" She asked, extending the hair accessory to you on an outstretched hand. You took it from her; all you could do was agree, tying half your hair back and fastening it in a bow at the back.
"We better go find your dad," you suggest, straightening the last few imperfections of your dress before Riley's attention is caught at the doorway.
"Oh my -- Riley, you look wonderful!" Eris' voice compliments from your doorway, and she bounds over to him, getting caught in his arms in an instant. He kisses her cheek, both of them looking to you after a moment's pause. "You both do," he adds, quieter this time. You turn slightly, blushing at the compliment as you retrieve your purse from your bed and walk towards them.
"As do you, Vanserra." You brush past him with a wink, heading down the hallway with all the confidence in the world today it seemed. Riley's footsteps bounded behind you, the three of you on your merry way.
â§ď˝Ľďž: *
You'd ridden to the Town Square on horseback; Riley with her dad, of course. When you'd gotten to the main district, he'd gotten off with Riley first, helping you next like a true gentleman. His hand lingered for a moment around your waist, the heat of his touch enough to send a thrill down your spine.
Stop it. You chastized yourself. You still work for him, you know.
Riley gasped, pointing toward the center of the streets, the crowds and vendors bustling with business this afternoon. "Daddy, look!" She squealed, pointing and hopping from foot to foot in anticipation. His hand held hers, beginning the trek through the busy streets. You accompanied her other side, sure to keep close to her just in case.
"Look! Daddy!" She shrieked in delight, and Eris scratched the back of his head, failing to recognize which vendor Riley was pointing out. You looked ahead, trying to decipher what might have her so intrigued. Thatâs when you saw it.
You leaned over, gently tapping his shoulder. He looked to you, and you placed your fingers atop your head, pointing down at Riley and then ahead. He looked forward, the realization dawning on him then.
âOh! I see, the lady with the crowns?â He asked. Riley shrieked, jumping up and down as your trio continued on, making way toward the craft table. Eris looked to you, silently mouthing a thank you. You only nodded once, giving him a small smile in return.
Riley let go of her fatherâs hand, leaping toward the table full of play pretend crowns when she was close enough to see it fully. She oogled over them all â finding it hard to choose just one.
âGood morning, folks!â The older woman behind the table greeted, and you bowed your head in polite greeting as well.
âHi, I like all these,â Riley said, and the lady chuckled.
âWell, arenât you a little cutie,â she cooed, and Riley nodded.
âActually, Iâm a Princess.â The lady smiled at her, and Riley inspected a pink bedazzled one more closely.
âOh, I bet you are, arenât you!â She said. She seemed to only just now notice Eris, her eyes widening in pleasant surprise.
âWhy, if it isnât the High Lord's son himself! Oh, goodness,â She said, curtsying hastily. Eris smiled politely.
âNo worries, maâam. Good morning to you too. Lovely day today, isnât it?â He said, and her eyes lit up.
âIt isnât isnât it? Gosh, what a beautiful day-â
âDaddy, I want this one!â Riley thrust a golden crown with red gems glued to it into the air, and Eris stepped forward.
âAlright dear, alright.â He chuckled, fishing out a few coppers from his pocket. âHow much for this one?â He asked. The old woman waved a hand, shaking her head.
âNonsense; itâd be my honor to give one of my crafts to the Autumn Princess.â Riley beamed, putting her new crown on her head in delight.
âThatâs very kind of you, but I insist.â He dropped a few coins, definitely more than the piece cost â and the lady gave him a gracious smile.
âThank you!â Riley said, and the woman nodded to her.
âYouâre teaching that one well, Eris!â She said, and Eris waved as you all made your way to the next table.
â§ď˝Ľďž: *
Youâd only made it by about five more tables when the face painting station came into view. Of course, that was next on the agenda, and of course, it had the longest line of children. Nonetheless; Riley patiently waited her turn, standing calmly between a few other rowdy kids while you and Eris watched from the fountain a few feet away.
âThatâs all you, you know.â He said, your sidelong glances meeting for only a moment. âHer, manners, I mean. How well behaved she is. Her patience,â he explains. You clasp your hands together, his shoulder resting against the stone so close to the side of your face. You were grateful, anyway; he shielded the midday sun from your view.
âShe doesnât get that from you?â
He lets out a sharp laugh, looking at you incredulously. âOh, absolutely not. Me, as a child⌠Gods, I wish there was a way I could repay my mother for how reckless I was.â He shook his head, and you bit your lip to hold back your giggle.
âYou seem like youâve got this-â he gestures his hand in a circle, motioning to Riley who looks over and mistakes it as a wave. She waves, and both of you wave back at her, that little smile so contagious.
âIt just seems like youâve got this whole thing figured out already. Like, youâve always got an answer for everything.â He scratches his chin, and your mouth tilts in a side smile at his words.
âEris, truly, I donât though. I mean, I donât even have kids myself...yet.â You say, and he lets out a long breath. Your mind races, thinking of everything you know you shouldnât in that moment.
âYou want them someday, though?â He asks. Your expression must say something, because he quickly fumbles his words. âIâm sorry, thatâs, um. Thatâs really personal, I didnât mean. That.â
You look down at the pavement, more than the afternoon sun warming the skin on your cheeks. âWell,â you say, your eyes daring a glance at him only to realize his face is rather flushed as well. âRiley wonât need a nanny forever, right?â
Eris runs a hand through his hair, readjusting his position against the wall of the fountain. âNo, no. I suppose she wonât.â
âLook! Sheâs almost done,â You say, watching as the artist cleans her brush in the water one last time. Eris tries to peer around people and get a look at what design she got, and you curl your fingers around the rather large muscle of his upper arm.
âWait! Donât look â what do you think she got?â You ask, and Erisâ gaze wavers between where your fingers hold tight to him and your eyes trained on his.
âIâŚ. uh⌠I donât know,â he says, failing to come up with a good guess. âProbably the pony; little girls love ponies, right?â You smirk, raising an eyebrow at him.
âI bet you one copper that she comes back with a bunny painted on her cheek.â You guess, and he shrugs.
âAlright, suit yourself. One copper it is, then.â Riley scooted back in her chair, bounding over to you with a wide smile on her face. Eris watched as your smile grew with every step his daughter took toward you two, a fluffy, pink bunny painted right on her cheek.
â§ď˝Ľďž: *
Riley started getting a bit fussy after the late lunch the three of you had shared, indicating it was indeed her naptime. She refused to be carried by her father through the busy streets, preferring to walk between you two hand-in-hand instead.
"Swing me!" She shouted, skipping along as she gripped your fingers in hers. Eris looked to you and sighed, but you only shrugged.
"Alright dear, but only a few times, we're nearly to the horses-"
"Okay, Daddy, okay!" She said, rearing back and preparing to be swung off her feet.
"One, two, three!" Eris counted, lifting her in time with you off her little feet, sending her flying into the air a few inches as she squealed in delight. When her feet hit the ground once more, she laughed with joy, asking again and again for the same thing.
You watched as the little girl fell asleep soundly against her father's chest, drifting off with the rocking atop the horse as you'd made the trek home. It made you happy to see Eris getting to do these little things, even if it was just carrying his daughter inside and lying her down for her nap. You'd taken to the kitchen, noticing the darkening sky and decided to prep for the evening meal as you'd be cooking for one extra this evening.
"I didn't realize how much went into what you do."
You didn't need to look to know he'd come into the kitchen, his voice only a few feet away. You continued to pull out the various pots and pans needed, closing the cabinets with care to not wake Riley.
"I'm not sure what you mean," you say, walking toward the fridge in search of the vegetables. Eris stalks over to the island, leaning against it as he watches you pull things out.
"I just meant. Well, I don't get to spend as much time with her as I'd like." He says, and you stand, shutting the refrigerator door behind you. You walk over and stand beside him, laying out the veggies on the countertop before you.
"I see," You say. He was talking about his daughter, you knew that. A soft rumbling sounds from outside, and you glance behind you. The sky outside the window has indeed darkened; you hoped the thunder would only enhance her slumber, not stir her from it.
You bent over, reaching in the cabinet for a cutting board and placing it on the island. Eris went quiet next to you, and you risked a glance at him. Your face fell when you noticed his downcast eyes, so full of light and love just hours ago now replaced with something darker.
"What's... what has you so upset-"
"I'm the only parent she has left," he says harshly, his hands bracing the edge of the marble. "I barely know a thing about my own kid, and I don't get to see her often because of my damned job, my position in this court that I'd give up in an instant if I knew she'd be safe-" he stops, the last word broken by a crack in his voice. His knuckles had gone white against the counter, and your eyes had widened at his outburst.
You reached out a timid hand in comfort, but pulled back as the image of last time flashed through your mind. The way he freaked out when you put your hand on his arm, just trying to be there for him...
You weren't sure what he wanted from you.
"Eris... I don't know what to say." You couldn't think of what to do, shaking your head slowly as your hands hung limply at your sides. "I'm... I'm really sorry, about today, if I stepped on your toes by going with you guys, I know how important your time is with her, I just-"
His head turns, looking to you in that moment. You hadn't realized how close you stood to one another, his intense gaze feeling like fire as he scanned your face. You couldn't read him -- his eyes watered, and he looked... frustrated? Confused? What was it?
"Look, I'm sorry, I'll just leave you alone-"
"Please don't," he whispered, his eyes falling to your hands as a tear ran down his cheek. "Please. Don't leave."
Your heart throbbed, pins prickling the backs of your own eyes. In that moment, you reached both of your hands out, not caring the repercussions of your actions as you slid your arms around Eris' ribs, pulling him into you and holding tight. He breathed deep, his torso shuddering as you fought back your own tears while running your fingers up and down his back. His hands gripped your waist, his strong arms enveloping you as he allowed himself to finally relax against your touch, finally accepting a bit of the comfort you so desperately had been trying to offer him.
"Eris," you said quietly, the rainfall the only other sound in the room over the quiet sounds of your combined breaths. "You have to understand that you are a good father." His fingers flex around your waist, holding you tighter as he takes in your words.
"Riley talks about you all day long," you continue. "She waits everyday for you to come home, and I really think you don't give yourself enough credit for all of the things you do for her each and every day." You say.
"She knows your work is... not, well. Normal," you say, and he nods against your shoulder. "I think everyone knows that you do a lot, and you've been through so much," you chuckle humorlessly, pressing your cheek against his chest. "The main thing we care about, honestly, is that you come home safe every night."
He pulls back slowly, his hand sliding from your waist to brush a piece of hair from your forehead. You hadn't realized it'd stuck to your cheek -- a stream of wet from the corner of your eye was proof of that. His fingers remained lightly cupping your cheek, his thumb brushing across your skin as he continued to hold you against him.
"You truly are a Queen." Eris says, his soft smile drawing a little chuckle from you. "Beautiful inside and out."
Your cheeks are ablaze from his words, your breathing unsteady as his fingers pull you closer, his lips mere inches from yours. You can see every caramel hue in his irises, every light freckle dusting the bridge of his nose when-
A sharp crack sounds behind you, the room illuminating with the bolt of lightning that flashes across the sky. You flinch, embarassed as the moment passes and you're left in darkness again. You realize you'd clung tighter to Eris, and he'd done the same; both of you releasing your hold on the other at the same time.
He clears his throat, running a hand through his hair as he lets out a short laugh. "Uh, well," he chuckles, gesturing to the spread of forgotten vegetables on the countertop before you. "This is another thing I am not proficient at." He shrugs, and you nod, wiping your palms on the skirt of your dress.
"Oh! Right, um, well. I'd be happy to show you, if you'd like. I thought for dinner tonight, we'd do traditional autumn stew?"
â§ď˝Ľďž: *
The rest of that night was nice... for the most part.
Dinner was nice. The three of you enjoying it together was nice. Riley insisted on having movie night afterwards, so Eris set up the projector and the three of you snuggled together in the living area under a mound of blankets and pillows to watch Moana... which was nice. You'd even fallen asleep there, and to wake up using Eris' arm as a pillow... well, you'd be lying if you said that wasn't nice, too.
What was not so nice, was the morning after.
You'd woken up first, enoying the sight around you in the dim light but eventually you made your way to the kitchen for some tea. The first light of morning hadn't risen yet, which meant you had some time before Riley would wake up to prepare a meal for her... and her father, too. You were pondering what to make when footsteps behind you had you whirling around in the dark, squinting to make out the figure before you.
"Don't worry -- it's just me," Eris whispered, and you rubbed your eyes, taking him in more clearly. He was already fully dressed, not in his usual attire or how he would dress when spending time at home, either. He was in his armor, the various straps and ties secured across his chest and arms making your eyes widen and forcing you to wake up quickly.
"Where are you going?" You asked, and he stepped closer, his voice a hushed whisper.
"I recieved word that I would be needed this week for correspondence in a few of the other courts," he says, and your heart lurches. "I am hoping to be back sooner, but-"
"Wait. You're leaving for an entire week?" You squeak, and he nods gravely. You shudder, but you feel his fingers wrap around yours as he brings your hand to his lips.
"I promise, I will try to be back sooner." He says, pressing a gentle kiss to the back of your hand. You shake your head, your mind racing with a million dark thoughts you wished you weren't having this early in the morning.
"What about Riley?"
He sighs, dropping your hand and scratching his chin. "Last time I had to leave like this, you remember she didn't handle the goodbye well-"
"So you think leaving without saying anything is better?" You ask, your frown evident. His head drops between his shoulders, and his hands lightly hold onto your shoulders.
"Y/N, you know it kills me to leave like this," he says, his eyes pleading in the dim morning light. "I can't go through that again with her." He says, and you sigh. It was horrendous last time, her wailing and sobbing as he left for his mission lasted days when she was told what wsa happening. You still felt the guilt in your gut by not telling her what was going on though.
Your fingers found his, your gaze firmly holding his. "I'm telling her today after you've gone. She at least deserves to understand what's happening." He nods, pulling you in quickly to his chest. Your heart skips a beat, the anticipation, fear, and something else all mixed together like the bubbling water of the Cauldron inside of you.
"One week. I'll see you then," he says against your hair, releasing you as he quietly makes his way to and out of the front door.
â§ď˝Ľďž: *
That whole week was Hell.
Riley asked at least once a day when her father would come home, and you felt worse and worse when you couldn't give her a straight answer as you weren't entirely sure yourself as to when he'd return. Honestly, it made you sick not knowing exactly what was going on either, and having to put on a brave face every morning was beginning to weigh on you more than you liked to admit. You truly wished you didn't care so much -- but the tethers around your heart pulled everytime you imagined the worst, thinking of what could be happening to Eris-
"Y/N is sad." Riley stands near the end of the kitchen counter, her limp beagle dangling from her fingers. Her tired eyes were swollen and red, and you lift your head from your hands on the counter at the sound of her voice. You glance toward the clock. 9 pm.
"Riley, honey, I put you in bed an hour ago-"
"But Y/N is sad too." She walks softly toward you, the braid you'd done in her hair now slightly mussed from the tossing and turning she'd likely done in her bed before she'd woken up. She approaches, wrapping her arms around your thigh and pressing her cheek to your exposed skin. Tears threaten the corners of your eyes, all of the emotions hitting you in full today. It was the seventh day Eris hadn't come back, and you were both feeling the weight of his absence it seemed.
You bend down, kneeling before her to engulf her in your arms in a proper hug. She shakes lightly against you, and you can't help the single tear that slips free, dripping onto her soft hair. Her fingers grip onto your silky pajamas, clutching you tightly.
"I miss daddy so much," she mumbles into your shoulder. Your hand runs over her little back, trying to provide her comfort while keeping your own tears at bay.
You take a shaky breath, your voice broken as more quiet tears fall down your cheeks. "I know sweetheart. I miss him too."
â§ď˝Ľďž: *
Riley ended up drifting off in your lap, and you'd opted to carry her to your room. The distance from the kitchen was shorter, and in an effort to not stir her again, you laid her in your plush blankets, tucking her in and watching as she snuggled into the warm blankets with contentment. You left the lamp on in case she woke up, but closed the door this time; Gods forbid you had another emotional breakdown and woke her once more.
You retreated to the living room, reaching for a few blankets in the dark room when the creak of the side door sent a chill down your spine.
Were you hearing things?
You froze in place, every drop of blood in your body turning to ice when you heard it swing shut.
Definitely not hearing things. Someone was in the house.
Your head spun, cheeks ablaze and palms clamming up all at once. This hadn't happened before, or yet, anyway. Eris had touched on this issue when you first started working here, but what had he said about intruders? You couldn't remember.
The pit forming in your stomach grew as your mind raced, trying to think of any escape, any plan, any action to get Riley out of here before you both met your end. Gods, what had he said when you were hired, anyway? Something about his swords, in his room, maybe? Those were all the way down the hall -- you'd never make it in time.
You took a silent step toward the foyer, then another. The intruder would be in the kitchen soon, and you wouldn't waste any precious seconds you had to save Riley. You had to move, now.
Passing the small entryway table, you contemplated the vase atop it for a moment. Honestly, it would only wake Riley and alert the intruder of her presence. Maybe he would just take you and leave, if you could be quiet enough. You had a better shot defending yourself with your fists anyway -- the glass decoration would simply shatter anyway.
You rounded the corner, sucking in a breath as you heard a low moan coming from the kitchen. Your heartbeat faltered, an invisible pull like a magnet drawing you closer. You squinted in the dark, trying to make out any shapes or forms through the dim lighting.
Another low groan, only this time you recognized it. Your clenched fist loosened, and you took a few quick steps toward the small faelight to flick it on, revealing the horrific scene before you.
"Eris?"
â§ď˝Ľďž: *
You worked quickly, trotting around the master washroom with supplies as your mind seemed to fog over. You felt as though this was a silent film, and you were a puppet; nothing was real, you couldn't hear, or think, or register what was going on before you-
"Y/N, please-"
"I'm working on it," you say absentmindedly, your fingers shaking as you begin soaking the rag clutched in your hand with cleaning solution. Eris' eyes widen, and he stares at you silently.
Only when the rag is practically dripping do you look up at him, barely able to look him in the eye before muttering, "this is going to hurt like Hell." He nods, and you quickly press the rag into his abdomen, his muscles immediately tensing around the area. He sucks in a sharp breath, the following few are ragged as he white-knucke grips the counter behind him.
"Gods, Y/N-"
"Hold still." You command, your tone lacking warmth as you move to press against the long gash, attempting to stop the blood free flowing from it. He groans again but you keep going, readjustign the cloth until you've wiped most of the blood away and the wound is clean for the most part.
You retreat to the medicine cabinet, grabbing a jar of salve and some large bandage wrap from it before standing before Eris once more. You gather some of the cool jelly on your fingers, making to apply it but Eris' hand grips your shoulder in an instant, and you break from whatever panic mode you were in and look up at him.
"Wait," he whispres, pain lacing his voice as his brows knit atop his forehead. You blink, realizing that in your momentary panic-ridden attempt to help him, you were not providing what he may have needed most and not gotten much of this past week.
Your eyes dropped, and your fingers lightly wrapped around his, your thumb running over his long digits. "I'm almost done, I promise," You say, with a lot more compassion this time. His eyes meet yours, and you fight against the stinging behind yours as you move toward him, your fingers brushing over the marred skin. His fingers tighten on your shoulder, a pained gasp coming out of him again.
"Shh, it's alright," you say quietly, working as quick as you can. "Almost done, I promise," You cap the salve, tearing open the bandage wrap before aligning it over his wound. His forhead finds your shoulder, his head resting on it as the muscles around his knife wound continue to retract at your touch. You lightly wind your arms around him, securing the wrap around his midsection and completely covering up his injury. It's then that you feel the warmth of his hands on you; his hands that had been holding onto you this whole time, but now had he relaxed a little, his heat had begun to return.
You stepped an inch closer, the familiar lump in your throat from earlier returning as every word you ached to say raced through your mind. Your arms found their way around his neck, and he squeezed you tighter when he felt you holding him. You threaded one hand through his hair, softly running your fingers through it while the other traced up and down lightly across his exposed back.
"You really scared me," you whispered. A small drop of water landed on his shoulder, but you didn't care. You'd allowed yourself to be vulnerable earlier in front of Riley, and it is healthy to show that you can't be happy all of the time, and that's okay; maybe Eris needed to see that too.
He nodded against your shoulder, his head turning as his nose brushed the dip of your neck. His fingers rested on your lower back, holding firm as the two of you sat in comfortable silence, a million unsaid thoughts unshared between the two of you.
"I'm sorry." He said quietly after a few minutes, his lips brushing against your skin with the action. Your body tingled, it itched, you burned inside, just wishing things could be different. You pulled back an inch, moving to look up at him through your wet lashes. He shook his head slowly at you, his thumb brushing over the tear trails down your cheeks.
"Please don't cry," he says. You chuckle, sniffling a little before unwrapping your arms from him. His hands catch yours, keeping you close to him before you can go to far.
"I hate leaving for so long." He said, his eyes dropping as he thought about how and what to say. "I don't like to be away like that."
You swallowed thickly, nodding with the effort. "Riley missed you. A lot. She asked about you every day..." you trailed off, looking to the side. He nodded, his hand letting go of yours and moving to cup your cheek, guiding you to look up at him again.
"I miss Riley, always," he said. "But, I also miss you."
Your heart seized, your chest caving at his words. You opened your mouth to answer, but nothing came out. How, in this worls, would you be able to say everything you wanted to, in just this moment?
You couldn't. You knew you wouldn't be able to. Not in just one moment like this. In the dim lighting of his master bath, just the two of you alone in the quiet -- he looked devastating, a few strands of his short hair brushing against his forehead as he gazed down at you. His gaze, his eyes, burning into yours with desire; you only hoped you coveyed every ounce of love you had in your body with a stare like that alone.
So, you did what felt right.
You pressed up onto the balls of your feet, his left hand on your hip balancing you as your lips finally met his. Every nerve ending in your body was ablaze, the feeling of those pillow soft lips on yours sending your mind into a state of bliss. His hand threaded through your hair, the other snaking around your lower back to press you closer against him.
You pulled back, just for a moment to make sure this was what he wanted as well. You barely had time to blink before his hands pulled you back in, his lips moving against yours with even more desire, more passion, the need only growing.
Your hands rested on his chest, fingertips pressing in slightly when he skated his tongue across your bottom lip. You allowed him in, surprising him when you swiped your tongue across his, the desire to explore every inch of his mouth one you'd been ashamed you'd had for months -- until now. He groaned, his grip on your waist tightening before his hand slid a bit lower, tracing the curve of your ass under his palm.
When you finally pulled back, gazing up at him with a small smile, you felt the heat between the two of you becoming rather warm in the small room. Whether it was eminating from him or it was how hot you felt inside, you couldn't be sure.
"You should... we should... it's late," you fumbled, chewing on your lower lip nervously. He nodded, loosening his grip on you a little but continued to pin you with his intense gaze.
"We should sleep," he agreed. You nodded, turning toward the door and making to leave but his fingers threaded lightly through yours. Your cheeks heated, and you looked to him as he smirked over your reaction.
"I..." you looked to his torso once more, and gasped. "Oh! I'm sorry, uh. Yeah, um. I can, help you. Get to bed, if that's. What. You, need." You stumbled out, and he chuckled lowly. You laughed nervously, and he pulled you against him once more. You squeaked at the feeling of his fingers gripping your hips, his lips pressing a small kiss just beneath your ear before his words sent a chill down your spine, despite the room's warm temperature.
"Maybe, you should just stay in here with me tonight."
Your backbone straightened at his suggestion, and he huffed a laugh once more. Your eyes met his, and a small smile played on your lips as you answered back.
"My bed is taken for the night, anyway. What's the harm?"

SPOILERS FOR ULTRAMAN:RISING
i know people have been talking about it but iâm going to lose my mind if i donât say anything. the new ultraman:rising movie is SO SO GOOD. SOOOO GOOD. iâm genuinely losing my shit because i didnât expect it at all. i was just looking for something to watch with my sisters. imagine my surprise when we played it and it was more emotional than i thought it would be. first of all: the reluctant father trope is gonna get me EVERYTIMEEE. and they did it so well. in fact i think itâs my favorite portrayal of the trope so far. ken had me tense as hell for the first bit bc i wanted to see how they were gonna redeem him, but honestly, the pacing and character development was amazing. watching him progress felt natural, and i absolutely adored seeing how emi made him a better person.
the scene when he met her for the first time and the clouds cleared?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? he loved her from the moment he met her. and i love love loveddddd that he actually treated her like his daughter. he called her baby, he called himself her dad, he played with her, he fed and washed her, etc etc. i feel like itâs very common to see the father figure still keep that distance, especially when theyâre not raising a human, but for the most part, he went all in. you couldnât tell that man he didnât birth her! i so badly want to see more of them together, even if itâs just a mini series of him raising her on kaiju island. she impacted every area of his life. he needed her just as much as she needed him.
dr. onda did drive me insane, but i did feel for him just a little bit. i understand why he let his vengeance fuel him. also maybe iâm overthinking it, but i like the parallel of him and ken with their sunglasses. they both hide their sadness, grief, and vulnerability with them. i think itâs neat that they know they canât hide how their eyes express their feelings.
ultradad and mecha gigantron messed me UP. i was so scared his dad would actually die, but i was also very happy to see gigantron was actually alive. she was very valid in attacking the kdf for stealing her baby!! i hope they can fix mina because emi needs her grandmas. every single scene of ken and emi nearly brought me to tears. this movie was made with so much love. i heard it took 25 years for them to get this movie actually approved and going, so congrats to shannon tindle for having a vision and seeing it through!! thank you for sharing it with the world because itâs easily one of my favorite movies of the year. i hope the end credit scene actually leads to more of this universe, because this movie has truly blown me away.
#thank you animators for making ken so fine#ken sato#my man my man#ultraman: rising#ultraman emi#emi#netflix ultraman#kaiju#monsterverse#i think#idk#but happy fatherâs day to ken sato#the girl dad to end all girl dads#ultraman#iâm gonna be thinking about this forever#ultraman rising#spoilers#ultraman rising spoilers

There was a surprising amount of sex in Be Mine Superstar! I really wasnât expecting itâŚ. Similarly, Love Syndrome had a LOT less sex than I was promised by the trailerâŚ
Are there any BLs that had either many more or many less NC scenes than you were expecting before you started watching them?
BLs that exceeded (or underperformed) sexy expectations
Interesting question. So far, not that many Thai BLs. But I think that's just because I pay attention to the pairs and the actors in Thai stuff, and you sort of get a feel for what they will (and won't) take on. So in your examples: I know JaFirst did high heat so I expected the producers to lean into that advantage as part of BMSS because, frankly, it didn't have much else going for it.
I haven't watched Love Syndrome III yet but knowing Frank I wouldn't expect it to go super high heat in terms of actual physical contact.
I guess the ones that have surprised me are mostly out of Thailand are pulps that I knew nothing about going in. Let me see...
Thai BL that ended up being way hornier/better than I expected
Secret Crush On You - such a weird show but BillySeng brought IT, whatever IT is, they got it.
Love in Translation - yeah, what happened in that sauce isle boys? Very saucy. Whatever pun, more please.
2 Moons 3 - about on par with ForthBeam from 2 Moons 2 but nothing else in the previous 2 series would lead one to expect the horny we got in this show on the main.
Second Chance - yeah it was a throw away pulp and this studio is hit or miss on chemistry but it had one of the best kisses of its year.
Big Dragon - I don't know what I expected form the trailers, but it wasn't as good as it turned out to be. Don't get me wrong, the rest of the show is naff, but the chemistry/heat levels are scorching.
Ghost Host, Ghost House - generally the horror stuff doesn't do chemistry well, but these two have some of the best chemistry EVER put into a pulp. I really hope we see more of them.
KinnPorsche - It's no secret I'm not as wild about this show as most, but I did think the VegasPete stuff was unexpectedly killer in all ways.
Oh My Sunshine Night - yeah it was exactly what one expects from OhmFluke but THE SIDES!!!! I mean... WHAT? I'm not mad, just pleasantly surprised.
TharnType - Okay but remember at the time what we'd had from Mame was LBC (relatively low heat) and other Thai stuff I was familiar with at the time was Make It Right, Love Sick, SOTUS, and UWMA. TT was way higher heat that I'd seen from Thailand before. And then...
Why R U? - ZeeSaint's "away trip to the beach" full on sex scenes plus repping for verse was just crazy at the time. Especially since Saint played Pete in LBC before this and Zee was new to BL. Add that to the very odd and disjointed (and miss-matched) SaifahZon counter story and WRU? was this insane all over the place viewing experience, including the heat levels. There was this "what will they do next?" kind of tension over the production. Not the story (because who was following that?) but the PRODUCTION. At the time, it was welcome, but truly bonkers. What a way to drive narrative tension... pure high heat chaos.
Thai BLs where chemistry failed meet my (relatively low) expectations
My Ride - honestly, if they had just gotten the kiss right this might even have earned a 10/10 from me
Unforgotten Night - ugh
Bite Me - double ugh
Friend Forever - I know I'm the only person who watched this but why could we not have gotten ONE kiss from the leads?
Nitman - studies have since shown us it is entirely not Noh's fault... see Oh My Sunshine Night
Wedding Plan - the leads were fine, but Mame usually fails me in every way except chemistry, so "fine" is not up to her usual standards. Those standards being predominantly "they hawt together" and nothing else. There wasn't even a side dish couple to pick up the slack noodle... so to speak.
Korean BL
For most of 2022 I was consistently getting surprised by Korean BL's chemsitry when it was good but now I've settled into half expecting it yet still being delighted when it happens and is well done.
I do think Semantic Error was a bit of a seed change for them.
The problem is, now we know they can do it, we are starting to get pissed when it's bad or entirely absent.
Taiwanese BL
Taiwan is the opposite of Korea.
I expect good chemistry and almost always always get it. I struggle to think of a time when they've disappointed me (in this arena). Maybe a few? But I tend to cut Taiwan more slack than other countries because they have so few BLs and they are generally so consistent. If they falter at all, at least the side couple will pick up the slack.
Japanese BL
I have no expectations of Japan. Life as a BL fan is a lot easier that way.

top ten books I read this year, ranked:
10. And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie (pub 1939)
Honestly this wasn't the most mind-blowing or memorable book, but it was my first Christie and my introduction to this genre. It got me out of a slump too which was great. Christie's style is so very british but I thoroughly enjoyed this as my introduction to this kind of mystery, and I found the reveal to be surprising and well done! This book definitely made me want to pick up more Agatha Christie in the future, but I'm not in any particular hurry to do so.
9. Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood (pub 1939)
This was actually my most recent read. I picked up this book knowing that it was the inspiration behind the musical (and film) Cabaret. This book feels much more of a piece of creative nonfiction/memoir than a novel, but it tells different stories in vignettes of people in Berlin in the 1930s. Between dancers and artists like Sally Bowles, queer people in Berlin, and Jewish people living through the rise of the Nazi party, these true stories were incredibly touching and really made me think about the way we talk about fascism today. The modern way in which people spoke in Weimer Germany, and the extent to which they knew what was going on in Germany at this time and still just let the Nazi takeover happen, is terrifying and all too real, and I am glad this book exists to highlight that.
8. Go Tell it on the Mountain by James Baldwin (pub 1953)
My first Baldwin of the year and third Baldwin book overall. I really enjoyed this book, as it was an exploration of a Black family in Harlem, and each family members' relationship with one another and with God. I loved the way the story was told, through flashbacks and memories of each character as they sat to pray in a church. Each story was both incredibly humanizing and devastating, and the ending was surprisingly somewhat hopeful.
7. Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice (pub 1976)
I read this after the second season of the amc show aired. Honestly, this book was so much better than I was expecting it to be, given what I know about where Anne Rice takes the series in the future. In this novel, the prose is so beautiful and breathtaking. Anne Rice also delves into such deep and thought-provoking discussions about God and religion, goodness and evil and monstrousness, through her characters and their philosophies, and how they deal with their vampirism. I fully feel that this book deserves to be called the modern Frankenstein.
6. Babel by RF Kuang (pub 2022)
The youngest book on here by far. I am often weary of the trendy new books and the 'booktok' books, especially those that seem to be fulfilling some kind of aesthetic. So, my expectations going into this weren't the highest, I was expecting, as is true with most 'dark academia' books, a rip-off of The Secret History. However, I was so pleasantly surprised by this book! This book is an anti-colonialist response to The Secret History and the like, and explores how academia always serves the institutions in power, and how specifically British academia has driven, and continues to drive, imperialism. This book was also very science-fictiony, and completely deserves its Nebula award. The magic system in this book is so interesting and novel to me, and i truly think Kuang is a genius. Also, I personally loved the footnotes. It's so clear how much work and research went into this book, and it adds so much to the quality of the book.
5. Animal Farm by George Orwell (pub 1945)
This was technically a re-read, since I read Animal Farm with my mom in elementary school and didn't understand it at all. So, I finally got back around to reading this and it was great. Just so perfectly told, the story of revolt from one authoritarian regime and the decline into another, arguably worse regime. It was also incredibly heartbreaking, and made even more so by making the characters farm animals. It is truly a perfect book and I know it sounds cliche, but everyone should read it. George Orwell is well-known for a reason.
4. Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut (pub 1969)
This one was unexpected! I have owned Slaughterhouse-Five for years, I think it has been sitting on by bookshelf for over five years untouched. I finally got around to reading it a few months ago and it was incredible. Kurt Vonnegut has a witty and to-the-point writing style that was difficult to get used to at first, but I definitely believe it worked in this book's favor. The childlike, simple way of writing and speaking, combined with the grim topic of WWII and PTSD, really highlight the sadness of Kurt Vonnegut's situation and how young he, and Billy Pilgrim, and all these soldiers really were. I absolutely loved the sci-fi interludes as well. It worked both creatively, to provide an allegory for war and PTSD, and literally to show just how dissociative Billy Pilgrim would get after the war. This book left me feeling incredibly sad, and I know that was just the point.
3. The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Le Guin (pub 1969)
And the book that beat Slaughterhouse-Five for both the Hugo and the Nebula! This book is not one that I would typically read, but I am so glad that I did. It is considered a seminal work of feminist science fiction, and tells the story of a human man named Genly who goes to a planet where all the people are genderless. It is a beautiful story of finding love and understanding with other people, and learning that there are strengths in our differences, and those differences can bring us together. This is a truly great novel, and left me feeling the way the protagonist felt, having gained a new empathy and love for human beings, no matter how different we may be.
2. Another Country by James Baldwin (pub 1962)
My fourth and final James Baldwin novel to date. I absolutely loved this book. The writing style, the beautiful vibes, and the beautiful and devastating story of a group of friends in Greenwich Village, New York was so compelling. This was one of those books that I could not just put away after I finished it. I had to read and reread the book, go over it in my mind for a while afterwards. This book explores Black masculinity and Black womanhood in America, it explores queerness, and specifically Black queerness during this time, and it explores the complicated dynamics between a multiracial group of friends in 1960s America. It feels so shockingly ahead of its time.
Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell (pub 1949)
yeah yeah, this is cliche, but it's so well-known, and so spoken about, for a good reason. This book, outside of its talk about authoritarianism, was actually just a thoroughly enjoyable and effective work of psychological horror. The way that language and history can shape our current really was so brilliantly done that it had me questioning whether O'Brien was telling the truth to Winston at times. I feel like this is a controversial opinion, but I felt that many of the characters, including Winston, Julia, Syme, and even O'Brien to a lesser extent, were humanized in a way that I felt terrible for these characters. This book had such incredible world-building that I would have been okay with reading 300 full pages of Winston's day-to-day life, that's how interested I was in this horrifying world Orwell created. However, the plot was equally as compelling! I truly felt like I was there with Winston through every step of his journey, and that made this novel feel so sickeningly horrific, and so effective.

something more
-> naoya x f!reader (kamo!reader)
[ synopsis. ] naoya had a reputation for being misogynistic, and he certainly didnât believe that he would ever fall in love with the disgusting creatures called women. the only one worthy of his attention was the strongest female sorcerer, a woman who was nearing in skill to gojo satoru himself. yet the attention doesnât mean he would treat you any better. but he wished he did.
[ content warnings. ] manga spoilers. misogyny. kidnapping. heavy angst. character death. mentions of child abuse. mentions of suicide. mentions of murder. mentions of attempted murder. mentions of torture. mentions of inhumane experiments. mentions of disability. allusions to sex. miscarriage. description of gore. reader is underweight. reader is older than naoya. belated love epiphany. more pain, possibly more than the suna one :)
[ word count. ] 3.7k
[ authorâs note. ] wow. this story went from the original 10+ chapter fanfic to a 3 chapter fanfic to a one shot. after so many trial and errors, i finally decided to make this a one shot, even if that means iâll have to cut some major plot points. the reason being that this story was developed a bit over a year ago, and iâm honestly starting to lose interest in finishing this as a series. well, here it is!
[ previously named: a cracked shell ]
âiâm home,â naoya says as he slides open the door to your shared room. yet he doesnât find you in there. heâs confused to say the least. even though you had a small fit with him the other day, it wasnât nothing serious. you would always pretend as if nothing had happened. you were just like that. you didnât like conflict, so in order to avoid it, you became somewhat of a pushover when it comes to most things.
your boundaries are set very low, and they continue to lower with every violation of them. it was one of the reasons you and naoya could coexist. he wished for an obedient little wife, and although you werenât obedient per se, your character in its nature was close enough.
you never acted out of line as you were clear of the troublesome headache it would bring you. and naoya was okay with that.
it would be an understatement to say that his expectations for his wife also lowered. the original idea in his mind was that he would marry a docile, mindless woman who would do everything he asked of her without question. and you donât fit that description. but heâs okay with you.
you, who is a sorcerer strong enough to rival geto and gojo.
it wasnât a secret that naoya had always admired the strong. and even if itâs a woman, heâll show some degree of respect to them as long as theyâre stronger or on par with himself.
which is why heâs so lenient with you.
he remembers how miserable you looked when he first met you at the kamo estate when he was eight and you were nine.
the only reason he appeared at the kamo estate was that he heard of a secret kamo child that had been recently escorted back to the estate. though he wasnât the type to come for solely this minor, insignificant purpose. no, he came since he heard the rumors of what you were.
not only had you inherited the kamo technique of blood manipulation, you also had an immense amount of cursed energy within you. though what made you the most special of all was the essence of your cursed energy.
a cursed energy with scent.
and not only did your cursed energy have a scent to it, the scent was odd. it had the ability to put people in a drunken state upon breathing in the fragrance too much. it was truly odd. something like this had never been seen. it was probably why the kamos were so hell-bent on bringing you back to the estate to recognize you as one of their own.
nine year old you was very similar to how you are like now. quiet, appearing to be uninterested in almost everything, and eerie. almost twenty years later of knowing you, he could never pinpoint exactly what it was, but you always seemed off. it was an eerie aspect that made others uncomfortable in your presence. maybe it was a dominating attribute that came with being that strong.
yet what he didnât understand was why you always looked so miserable. you were so strong that you could destroy a city and possibly more if you wished. but you were never happy. eight year old naoya thought that if he was that gifted, heâd never have a bad day in his life. maybe itâs because you were born a girl that you are unable to be happy. after all, the elders always spoke of how unlucky it is to be a girl.
that was the first time he met you. only being able to get a glance of your face in a open room. the next time he saw you was at the goodwill event. you appeared to be the same as before. you didnât speak much, you still looked miserable and unbothered, and you still had that eerie feeling about you.
around this time, naoya had been raised by the zeninsâ misogynistic ideals for so long that he has also adopted them himself. and even if he knew that your current abilities can rival even the two most powerful jujutsu sorcerers, you were just a woman. you were born with the right, immense power, but the wrong gender. you were bound to one day become someoneâs wife one day, confined to the chains of marriage and the duties of a woman.
your talent and power will succumb to nothing. itâll all be useless.
maybe thatâs when he first started hating you. he envied you for having the power he could not. his eyes grew red at the thought that a woman had received the main inherited jujutsu technique of the kamo clan when he himself only inherited a sub technique of the zenin. he feels frustrated that you have all this power and heâll never be able to see its full potential since youâre a woman thatâs destined to be in a house and nowhere else.
maybe thatâs why he was desperate to hunt you down during the goodwill event. he was desperate to prove himself better. he couldnât stand being weak compared to someone whoâs power will become useless one day anyways.
but he lost. zenin naoya had lost. it was humiliating really; the way you barely looked at him as you successfully constrained him, proceeding to leave without a care in the world.
he had felt a new kind of sensation that day. a strong urge to see what kind of faces you can make other than that miserable, unbothered expression.
so when he found out from his father later on that youâve been engaged to him, he found it perfect. heâll have the rest of eternity to make you say something, feel something more than hopelessness. you could tell that his preference for said feeling would be suffering, but itâs not like he ever succeeded, so you didnât pay his unwell intentions much thought anyways.
it was at this point when he finally found out why you always looked miserable. after all, the least he could do as your fiancĂŠ was get to know you, albeit you didnât want him to.
when he heard about your life so far, he laughed a bit. youâre so strong and yet you couldnât prevent any of the tragic events in your life. the elders were right. a woman like you was destined to live out an unlucky life. but maybe yours was a bit too unfair, even by naoyaâs opinion.
secret child born to loving parents, you had been raised without the kamosâ knowledge. at the age of nine, shortly before naoya first met you, an escort had appeared at the peaceful apartment you lived at and supposedly murdered your father. your mother fell into hysteria and blamed your existence for the death of her only love. she looked at you with hatred, with the intent to kill her only child. and when she regained some sense of logic, she would hold you closely and cry. he bets that this on and off behavior you endured also dried you up emotionally. and apparently your mother too, for she committed suicide in her room less than a year later.
before doing so, she didnât forget to smash a rock onto your head. either trying to take you with her or trying to enact some revenge for the love of her life he doesnât know. but what he does know is that the damage caused absolutely destroyed your right ear.
irreparable loss of hearing.
however unlikely, it was probably the hearing of your tragic childhood that made naoya show you a bit of kindness after the marriage. he showed some form of respect for you, the one who survived such a past and also you, the one stronger than himself.
you had also noticed this. how he wasnât exactly like how the rumors depicted him. but you paid no mind, as he still treated you as lesser than. it was to be expected. and although the younger you would scowl at the disrespect shown by someone younger than you, the current you couldnât care less.
you were only a wife to naoya for one reason. to escape being assigned as the next clan leader.
you could never take that position. not when you saw how the kamo clan had crushed your family. not when you saw how noritoshi hated you for receiving the attention of the elders. you knew about the boy. his mother being a mistress made his standing in the clan awkward. and you knew how much he needed to be the next clan leader in order to reunite with his mother.
so you allowed him to take the position of heir. you declined as your uncle, the clan leader, tried several times to make you the heir. you knew why he treated the two of you so differently. one was the only child of his only little sister, the last blood relation to her on this world, and the other was simply a mistressâs son, albeit his own.
but you couldnât destroy a family the way he destroyed yours. you didnât want to watch as noritoshi falls into despair like you. so even when your uncle pressured you with the choice or either marriage or heir, you confidently chose to be married off.
and what a choice it was.
from day one of being zenin y/n, you already disliked the atmosphere of the zenin household. but alas, it was the place where you would be living for probably the rest of your life.
and when the year passed by and you still had no sign of child, the zenin naobito had attempted to have you divorced.
least to say naoya was furious when he heard. why? because he finally had the second strongest sorcerer chained to his side. how was he supposed to just willingly give you up? but he and yourself both know what the cause for your lack of child was.
the fact that naoya refused to touch you.
itâs not like you minded. you had no emotions for your husband; you couldnât care less if he had someone pleasuring him outside. in fact, youâd probably be better off if he did.
but that wasnât the reason naoya didnât want to lay a finger on you. suprisingly, he had more than just one single reason.
one of which was that he still didnât want to be so intimate with such a lowly creature, a woman. but he needed an heir and he knew this well. actually, it would be best to have his heir be birthed by you. the possibility of your child inheriting some of your incredibly unnecessary cursed energy, or better yet, inheriting your unique scent would be splendid.
but the most important reason was that your body most likely couldnât handle it. not to mention the mental toll that your past and even the duration you were a sorcerer had on you, you had a more concerning issue. you turned sickly after overexerting yourself during the time at jujutsu high. and although he shouldnât care so much for a mere womanâs life, he knew that you were different, and he couldnât afford to lose such a valuable asset like yourself.
heâs seen how pregnancy does a woman over, and as much as no one would believe it, he doesnât want that to happen to you. either for his own selfish reasons, or for the reason he dreads, the reality was that he was contempt with not having an heir in the mean time.
so divorcing you? absolutely out of the question.
if his father used not having any emotional attachment as an excuse to tear you away from him, he would create that emotional attachment. fake or not, he wonât have anyone thinking of making him divorce you.
so he pushed himself. he pushed himself to treat you as a decent human being, and pushed himself to buy gifts for you when heâs out, going out of his comfort zone to try and pleasure you.
he allowed you and gojo to continue writing letters to each other. although heâs still sick to the stomach knowing his wife is conversing with another man, he knows that ever since you had been more in touch with your childhood friend, your mood became better.
and finally, on your second year of being married to naoya, he was finally able to see a genuine smile grace upon your lips.
it was the wish he had when him and you were still engaged and not yet married. the wish that you could display an expression different than that of your normal, unbothered one.
and it was beautiful.
he knew you were a looker since the day he first met you. and maybe thatâs a subconscious reason why he always wished you could show some more emotion. but seeing your actual smile was so much different. itâs almost as if heâs been blind all his life and finally saw light.
and as much as he wants to deny it, maybe he did have a growing place in his heart for you.
so why are you now missing when things were just starting to get better? it wasnât long after when he first shared a kiss with you and the two of you started acting more like a married couple, and now youâre nowhere to be seen?
naoya first reached out to gojo within two hours of you not being home, and when the white haired man responded with he didnât know where you were either, naoya almost lost his mind.
sheâll be okay, he thinks to himself. but another voice in his head reminds him of how youâre not in a state to fight. weirdly your physical state has deteriorated the past few days, and you turned into a even more sickly condition.
it isnât until the next day when he confirms with hayashi, your personal servant, that you havenât returned during the night does he really lose it.
weird too. hayashi was saved by you as a child, and follows you around ever since to repay you. heâd never leave your side, so why is he still in the estate and youâre not?
hayashi responds to the question with how you were invited out by a letter, and he wasnât able to see the sender.
it was a dead end.
quite a few months pass by before naoya finally hears about you. by this time, naoya has thinned down quite a bit and also looked abnormally pale. probably from the lack of sleep or the lost of appetite. or both.
and what he heard from gojo made sick to the stomach, so much that he wished to throw up even though his stomach was empty.
you were found.
the bad news? you were found bloodied and very much dead. you were found rotting.
and although gojo was wearing sunglasses that covered his eyes, anyone could tell the way this affected him through the crack in his voice as he struggles to continue on. after all, he already lost a best friend, and now he had just lost his childhood friend; he lost the one that he swore to protect since your parents failed to do so.
not much information was exchanged after the initial news was delivered, for it pained gojo too much to describe the horrendous scene in which you were found in. but he did take naoya to the scene shortly after he delivered one last piece of news that was sure to shatter naoya.
you were pregnant.
naoya wasnât all that surprised. in the last few months in which you were missing, he thought of you a lot. how you looked paler, sicklier than usual. how you were more sensitive than usual.
and because of his guess, he had treated you much better than before. he knew how you used to get suspended from jujutsu high for being overly cruel when some curse user would overstep your boundaries. and although your sharp edges dulled over the years, he was still afraid youâd have even a sliver of thought to abort it. and he couldnât let that happen.
but you probably didnât know yourself.
âweâre here,â gojo announces.
he bids naoya well before waiting outside the warehouse. he already saw it once, and he couldnât bear to see it again.
naoya braces himself before slowly walking inside. the interior of the warehouse seemed very normal. it looked like a warehouse for scientific research. there were lab tables, and giant fluid cases. the only thing out of the ordinary he noticed was how dirty everything was. there were many blood stains, but he convinced himself that it was too rusty and old to be yours.
as he walks further, that was when he saw it. the small hidden door in the far back. the door was unnecessarily heavy, seeming to made out of hard iron.
even if it was his first time being here, even if he canât see whatâs beyond the door, he knows whatâs about to appear before his eyes.
and he dreads it.
but he still pushes open the door that has already been forced open once. it was easy, seeing how the lock had been destroyed completely. but what wasnât easy was the capacity to handle everything that he saw.
cruel tools that his imagination can help show him what their uses were. red colored stains on the floor and counters. pieces of meat each around the size of a finger littered around the damp and suffocating room.
syringes. tubes of medicine. medical equipment. chains and shackles. bandages, both used and new. disposed pieces of surgeon uniforms, all covered in blood and a weirdly colored substance.
it didnât take a psychic to know what had happened here. it didnât take an actor to imagine the performance that undergone here.
the performance of torture. the act of experimenting on a living human being.
naoyaâs trembling although he doesnât notice it. he comprehends the emotions inside him bubbling as anger that someone had dared to lay their hands on what was his. but the truth was that this unfamiliar feeling he had was despair. something his pitiful wife was familiar with, but something he had only now acquainted.
despair over the fact that all this equipment was used on you and despair over the fact that when you were in pain and suffering, he couldnât do anything about it.
he slowly walks over to the small bed in the corner of the room. he noticed the blood stains on the sheets and the shackles on the headboard and footboard. most of all, he noticed he noticed the small shard piece covered in blood. he knew why it was covered in blood although no one told him.
it was probably what you had used to end your life.
he stares at it with a blank face, and he eventually reached out to grab it, grief and frustration causing him to clench the shard so hard he sees red. but it doesnât hurt.
itâs nothing compared to the atrocities you endured.
you were missing for months. he had been informed that your death report showed that you had only died a few days ago. to imagine that you had to suffer from these cruelties for months; the only thing in his mind was how strong you were.
he turns around to walk back out. to see you again. he deemed that it was worthless to stay here any longer.
as he was leaving the room that housed your pain, he saw it. the thick notebook filled with notes and scribbles of the things done to you.
from cutting away pieces of you to examine your genetic makeup, to attempting to force the day of labor so they could research his child; every word written was horrendous.
the contents journaling the day it was discovered that you were pregnant were drastically different than before.
at first it was just terrifying experiments performed on you to determine why you had an intoxicating scent to your cursed energy, but then when they couldnât find anything out, they wanted to try to copy the trait completely. through what? the child you were harboring.
as naoya flipped through more and more pages, he saw how they took their research further and further. and as things failed again and again, their methods only became more inhumane.
when he finally couldnât take it anymore, he threw the notebook behind him harshly, hearing a violent thump shortly after. he met up with gojo outside the warehouse and notices how his eyes were somewhat red.
when he brought naoya to your body, that was when both men couldnât take it anymore.
your originally sickly features looked even worse. you had grown paler and you looked like you had starved for every day you were missing. all that was left of you was skin and bones. there were bruises on your skin, littering almost everywhere the eye can see. the ones on your wrists and ankles naoya knew were from the shackles confining you, and the others on your body seemed to be wounds still unable to fully heal.
you, who hated becoming dirty, lay there with dried blood and dirt on your body. your skin had turned gray and you felt colder than ice. yet naoya still held your hand, trying to warm it up like he had done so before.
but he knew it was fruitless. you couldnât possess body warmth anymore, and you had no need for it either.
but as he holds your hand with both of his own, what he doesnât knowâwhat haunts his mindâis the question of did you wish for him to come to your rescue when you had passed day by day and week by week in that tiny little room.
were you disappointed as days passed and he still hadnât come?
or did you think he wouldnât come? did you doubt his love for you and think he wouldnât care if you were there by his side or not? did you think you were replaceable?
but the fact is that you werenât. albeit how badly he showed it, he knew he couldnât lose you.
he smiles bitterly as he pressed his lips to your cold forehead and thinks. maybe the possessiveness he held for you had a different meaning. he realizes that even if he denied to everyone that he didnât love you, maybe he did.
but itâs too late now. he only knew now. heâs only now understood what it was that he felt when you left. you probably also never knew.
after all, you left without giving him a chance to tell you.

[Hellsing] Female Fans' Round-Table Discussion
A 6-page interview from the 2012 Hellsing Official Guidebook, featuring five grown-ass women chatting about Hellsing in a casual discussion format and translated into English for the first time ever by yours truly.
Honestly this was way more entertaining to read than I thought it would be. Itâs also really funny seeing this super-casual discussion printed in the book right alongside Hirano'sâ-oh who am i kidding, this is 10x more professional and less deranged than whatever goes on in Hiranoâs interviews.
Anyway, without further ado...
Does Hellsing have little to no female fans? Nay! Assembled before you are five women with an undying love for the series. Letâs see their passion for this work show itself as they butt heads!
Is the female fanbase just hiding itself or what?
Moderator: Now then, everyone, letâs start off with introductions.
Ms. T: I am Ms. T. Iâve been walking the path of an otaku since middle school, and itâs already been â years since then. How do I put this, all of you seem like fairly normal peopleâŚ
Everyone: Oh noârest assured we are all otaku as well. (laughter)
Ms T: Oh, really? (laughs) Anyway, Iâve continued to love manga for all this time. Thank you for having me.
Ms J: Iâm Ms J. I was already at a decent age when Hellsing began serialization, but to create something so enticingâas expected of Hirano-sensei! (laughs). This is the kind of manga Iâd better buy and collect, I thought.
Ms A: Out of todayâs gathering, Iâm probably the one who became an otaku at the oldest age. (laughs) My friend told me, âHellsing is a manga that really crazy people readâ, so at first I couldnât get around to starting it. But around the time volume 8 came out, I binge-read it, and it was so interesting that I couldnât help but get obsessed.
Ms R: Iâm probably the youngster in this group. By the time Hellsing started serialization, I was just entering middle school. [T/N: That makes her 27 at the time of this interview.]
Of course we didnât really have the term "edgy-teen syndrome" back then, but around me the manga was definitely gaining popularity in that edgy teen fashion. One of my best friends was obsessed with Hellsing and Iâd borrow it after they finished reading it, and I got addicted too.
Moderator: Iâm under the impression that the female readership for Hellsing is overwhelmingly small, butâŚ
Ms J: Nah, I think theyâre just hiding. I mean, itâs not like youâd talk about Hellsing to someone in passing. You wouldnât suddenly say, âYâknow, Alucard isâŚâ
Everyone: True. (laughs)
Ms J: There isnât much opportunity to bring it up, or perhaps you could say itâs a hard topic to bring up to the general public.
Ms A: Like how you canât have a pork-and-rice bowl first thing in the morning or something.
Ms J: Yeah, like that. Actually, among my circle of female otaku friends, everyone has read Hellsing.
Ms T: Among manga fans, Kouta Hirano is well-understood.
Ms J: Any fan of manga who doesnât know Kouta Hirano is a faker!
Ms T: Disregarding whether youâve properly sat down and read his works or not, I feel like itâs impossible for a manga enthusiast to not have at least heard of Hirano-sensei. But we are talking about manga fans in general, and the range of tastes is so broad. If someone were to say to me âIâm a fan of Kouta Hiranoâ, only then would I be like, âOh, so I can talk comfortably with this personâ.
Moderator: Itâs a good litmus test to use. (laughs)
Ms A: Itâs only when you broach the topic of Kouta Hirano that you can finally talk about Hellsing. You canât go straight from âSo I hear you like mangaâ to âSo, about HellsingâŚâ, lol.
Ms J: If you met someone for the first time and you go âSo I heard you like manga? What about Hellsing?â thatâs like coming straight for their throat with a knife. (laughs)
Moderator: Even as a gauge to see how much of an otaku your opponent is, itâs a bit too much to try and break the ice with Hellsing.
The wonders of dialogue
Ms J: Speaking of the good points of Hellsing, I think itâs that it doesnât get overly preachy. You can see this starting from Cross Fire, but you really get the sense that everyoneâs equally crazy here.
Ms A: I can see that. No one is on the side of justice. Like the Major, heâs a nasty little guy. The type of guy who would casually twist off an antâs legs or something like that.
Ms J: That Major, his beta male levels are literally off the charts.
Everyone: (bursts into laughter)
Ms J: Actually, something that caught my interest about the setting is that only virgins can become vampires. In the first place, I donât think European vampire lore makes that kind of distinction.
Ms T: Father Anderson is probably a virgin, since he has religious reasons for celibacy. Though it might depend on religious sect. I wonder if thereâs a meaning behind this concept of chastity?
Ms J: The idea of chastity is valued in the Hellsing universe as well.
Ms A: Right, since if you arenât a virgin you become a ghoul, and then itâs game over and thereâs nothing you can do about it.
Ms R: Speaking of which, Integraâs a virgin, too.
Ms T: Integra being a virgin is an important part of the story.
Ms J: In my personal opinion, the best couple is definitely Alucard and Integra.
Ms R and Ms A: I was going to say the same!
Ms T: Integra and Alucard call each other âCountâ, donât they? You know, in a previous life itâs possible that Integra was a man. Perhaps Alucard is seeing the Count Hellsing of the past through Integra. Thinking about that possibility makes a girlâs heart flutter. Not to mention Integraâs appearance leans towards that of a manâ Ah, itâs just so peak! [T/N: I'm not being facetious, çă literally means peak]
Ms A: Those who want to read a male/female romance can enjoy doing so, and for people who like BL, there are plenty of elements that can be enjoyed as BL also. I feel like the reason you can enjoy both things is because the relationships that are depicted are not constrained purely to sexual love.
Ms J: For those who like to read into the BL aspect, there are lots of fight scenes that canât be ignored, can they? Particularly in the endgame. Like Girlycard and Young Walter, that was...really something.
Moderator: That part was just unfair! I mean, after getting captured by Millennium and going M.I.A., all that anticipation was building and building, and for Walter to be reintroduced like that!
Ms J: When I got to that part I was like, âMan, Hirano-sensei really did his best to keep all that stuff pent-up for so long". For both Walter and Girlycard, I mean.
Moderator: Speaking of Girlycard, I get the feeling that the idea for her was in place since the early stages of story development.
Ms J: I wonder about that⌠on the other hand it seems like it was a very spontaneous decision. (laughs)
Ms A: Even if the story developments feel spontaneous, I feel like the characters' settings are polished to a high degree from the beginning. Even though a new character suddenly appears out of nowhere, you end up following along without feeling a sense of discomfort. In Hirano-sensei's mind, I'm sure that each character is cultivated with an equal amount of attention. After that it's just a matter of deciding what situations the character will appear in.
Ms J: Each character is excellently molded to their place in the story. Even though normally it should be very challenging to create characters that would fit in this sort of world. (laughs) From the moment of their introduction, they are already dyed in Hirano's unique brand, and you can tell that Hirano understands them well.
Ms R: After all, characters from his past works before Hellsing make appearances in the manga, so you get the feeling that these are ideas that have been stewing in his head for a long time.
Moderator: And within Hellsing too, these characters grow and develop. Like Maxwellâhe started out as a mere brat, but then he went full tryhard mode and developed that cunning and pretentious side to him.
Everyone: (leans forward) Yeah, that's right!!
Ms J: âAnd he had that past with Anderson, didn't he? I was like "Hold on a sec, a flashback scene now, are you kidding me"? Even though I knew that a flashback is basically a death flag, I couldn't help but love it. (laughs)
Ms A: At the final moment, Maxwell called Anderson "Sensei", a reversal of their dynamic thus far. Up until then there were hints of foreshadowing, but nothing definite. But with that single word you could feel the adoration Maxwell had felt for Anderson when he was a child... It's amazing how potent that line was. The timing of delivery was excellent, too.
Ms R: Up until that point Maxwell was portrayed as nothing more than a snob, but the truth is there were reasons why he became that way.
Ms T: Hirano-sensei is very skilled at depicting relationships between men.
The beauty of composition
Ms A: In Hellsing, there aren't any characters that go too far beyond the range of normal anatomy.
Even with regards to enemies and such, there aren't any massively gargantuan or bulky characters. Everyone is more or less normal. And yet, there is so much impact in the poses that it leaves you with a strong impression. Those standout panels just radiate styleâso much so that anyone with an eye for art will be impressed by them, I think.
Ms T: The paneling is relatively simple, but the composition sense of each panel is amazing.
Ms R: I love the stuff like Rip Van's silhouette. The balance between her and the musket is super cool. Even though something that size in real life would be impractical to shoot, it looks so cool that it's like, "Who cares!"
Ms A: Fight scenes that should have a lot of movement are instead surprisingly depicted with still frame shots, and they have a beauty to them reminiscent of paintings. It makes me want to stare at the same handful of panels for a long time. Calling it aesthetic beauty might be a bit of an exaggeration, but...
Ms T: Not an exaggeration at all, I think there is a lot of aesthetic beauty. For me, when I look at Hirano-sensei's artwork, I'm reminded of ukiyo-e paintings. And in the movement, I sense a bit of kabuki theater.
Moderator: Each panel is created with beauty in every nook and cranny, so as to work as a standalone illustration.
Ms R: The way shadow and blood is depicted is so good, isn't it? It really makes full use of the monochrome medium.
Ms A: When I was reading the scene in volume 8 when Cromwell Level 0 is released and soldiers are unleashed in hordes, it reminded me of a medieval copperplate engraving. The plot developments in that moment were so interesting, and the density of the illustrations so rich, that simply staring at them was enjoyable.
Ms T: It really draws you in, doesn't it? In other manga that have very detailed art styles, the realism makes it feel similar to a liveaction movie. But Hirano's works are 100% "manga", I would say. In that sense, none of it is realistic at all. But that's why it's possible to achieve poses and compositions that are impossible with photography, and that's why he can portray things I didn't even know I would want to see.
The position of women in Hellsing
Moderator: To all of you, was there a scene where you were like, "This scene right here is where I became obsessed"?
Ms J: So this is my personal taste, but I liked the setup of the handsome lady Master and the handsome male Servant. I like butlers, too. So once those three conditions were satisfied, I was like, "This is a good manga". The part where I was like "This is a really good manga" was when Anderson was introduced. At first, I was thinking this would be a story where Alucard dotes upon Seras and raises her up as a vampire, but then we were introduced to a Catholic priest from the same religion, yet who aims to defeat the protagonists...
Ms A: You can't deny the impact of Anderson. The only thing he wants to do is "exterminate vampires". While characters in Hellsing may undergo sudden changes, they never waver. They race from their introduction to their final chapter with just as much momentum as when they were first introduced. Not only is it satisfying to read, you won't be disappointed. As long as your favorite character appears, you can focus all your attentions on them, and before you know it you'll have binge-read to the last chapter. (laughs)
Ms T: For me, the scene when Integra discovers Alucard in the basement, and Alucard was revived with her blood is when I became hooked. While it is an expected development for vampire stories, that part of the story was very beautiful. And afterwards, I loved the tender portrayal of Seras's growth. Among ero-guro media, there are many works that portray women in a demeaning manner, but Hellsing is not one of them.
Ms A: In Hellsing, there is no distinction in the roles that are assigned to men and women.
Ms J: Indeed, women fight and stand on the front lines. And it feels natural.
Ms R: To tell the truth, when I first started reading Hellsing, I thought Integra was a man. And, for some reason it felt overly pandering [T/N: I assume she means pandering to fujoshi] and I just couldn't get into it. But then I realized Integra was a woman, and I was like "Oh, so it's a female/male master-servant relationship! I'm sorry for making such a weird assumption!" (laughs) I feel like it's important that Integra is a woman.
Ms T: In volume 1 there were moments where Integra was told incredulously, "You're a woman?", but in those moments I always felt that, ironically, being called a "woman" was what made her so much more cool. In Hellsing, you get the feeling that all characters are loved by the creator regardless of being male or female, enemy or ally. There are many standout characters among the villains, for example.
Ms J: Each character showcases their individuality in their fighting style as well.
Ms A: I love that Rip Van is this scrawny girl with long limbs, who wields an old-fashioned musketâit gives off a really fantastic impression. The fact that a girl is given that kind of position, without it feeling offensive. When men draw female characters there tends to be a bit of double standards going on, or it can feel cloying or annoying depending on the scenario, but I don't feel that in Hellsing.
Ms J: Far from being annoying, the depictions of women feel unique and cool in their own way.
Ms A: You're right. Traditionally, female characters are accompaniments to the hero, aren't they? But Integra takes the lead, and while Seras is supported by those around her, she moves according to her own choices. Even among the female villains, they are given important roles that they carry out to the end, so you can read while feeling a sense of satisfaction.
Points you would recommend to other women
Ms T: Doesn't the series in general have a sort of sensuality?
Ms J: It does. As it gets nearer and nearer to the endgame, even the fight scenes show more tenderness. It's like a "They love each other, therefore they trade blows" vibe that feels erotic.
Ms R: When Alucard returned to London in volume 8, it felt pretty romantic.
Ms T: On the other hand, the explanations about weapon specs that pop up everywhere seem very male-oriented. I guess this is what you call the author's hobby.
Ms J: Speaking of the author's hobby, I feel like the fact that Walter is an old man is one of them. If you think about it purely in terms of reader appeal, there should have been no problem if Walter was young from the beginning. I get the impression that he was like, "If you're going to add a butler, it better be an old geezer". Ahhâthe more I reread, the more I feel like I discover new things.
Moderator: There is plenty more we weren't able to talk about, but to close us off, please appeal to the women who haven't read Hellsing yet as to why they should read the series.
Ms A: The female characters are so full of life, so why not give it a try mainly for the female characters?
Ms T: You can read it together with your boyfriend! There are lots of battles and weapons that guys would like, and there's no nasty relationship drama, so it might actually be a big hit among couples.
Ms J: "Look at Integra and Alucard, honey, they're just like us!" or something? (laughs)
Ms R: When you think of vampire media, you might be inclined to imagine something campy and whimsical. But even though there's a lot of absurdism at play, the world is based on real historical facts. So I want to recommend it broadly, even to those that don't normally enjoy fantasy.
Ms T: I feel like Hellsing is like a very strong liquor. At first you might feel that the taste is overwhelming, but once you get used to it, it becomes delicious.
Ms J: Please go in with zero expectations and give it a read.
Moderator: Thank you all for your time today!

top ten non-main (aka not series regulars) female characters in the TVDU?
Top Ten Non-Main Female Characters
These are just my opinions who I consider TVDU's top non-main female characters. Again, I haven't watched Legacies. I've also taken out any of the series main antagonists (Celeste, Qetsiyah, Dahlia, Aurora, etc.) because they just take over the list and they were main characters in their seasons. I can do a list of my top ten main female antagonists later.
Without further ado, here are the side characters that I thought were the best additions to the show. I also cheated and did 11.
11. Lisina
Out of all of the additions to TO Season 5, Lisina was the only one I really felt had any personality or purpose outside of just being conflict for the Mikaelsons. She was the only one that felt necessary. She reminds me of Vincent in the fact that she is fiercely loyal to her faction, but she also understands how important peace is to the Quarter. She has a strong set of morals and is willing to call others out on theirs.
I don't know if Hayley was technically still the Alpha of the Crescent Wolves, but she should have past it on the Lisina since Hayley had minimal to no contact with the wolves after Season 3. The Crescent Wolves desperately needed an Alpha like Lisina. She wasn't afraid of the other factions and could stand up for them, but again, had values she wouldn't waver on. She was the Alpha the pack was sorely missing for decades. I hate that they killed her for seemingly no reason.
10. Rose-Marie
Rose really came into the show as a way to bring the Mikaelson lore, which is funny since she actually knew very little about them. But still, she remains yet another character that died too soon. It was the one ship with Damon that I felt could have been healthy because she was a very self-assured person.
Rose was loyal to a fault. It sometimes made her do problematic things, like kidnaping a teenager and physically assaulting her, but she had a good heart. She quickly grew to care for people and became protective of them. She deserved better than a life on the run.
9. Eve
Eve was one of the only wolves I initially liked in TO. She was welcoming to Hayley without expecting anything from her. She just genuinely wanted to help Hayley find her place. Her death only served to isolate Hayley more. Eve was a kind hearted person to everyone. I also love that she had no fear of the Mikaelsons and was willing to put them in their place when deserved. Eve and Hayley would have done a great job caring for the pack together. I headcanon she was the one taking care of the pack's children while all of the parents were under Marcel's curse since she was one of the only adults we knew who hadn't triggered her werewolf gene.
I will never forgive Oliver for killing her. I've heard people feel bad for Oliver for how he dies, but I didn't have an ounce of remorse. He killed Eve in cold blood for power. She deserved better. We didn't even get to see her funeral or really show people grieving her.
8. Valerie Tulle
I recently wrote about Valerie, but then I rewatched Season 7 and remembered how much I truly enjoyed her character. Her background gave a lot more depth to Stefan and Lily. She had some hard edges, but with what she went through it's expected. But every time someone needed her, she was there. Even when Caroline was being petty to her, Valerie never hesitated to help her.
7. Sage
Sage was such an interesting character that didn't get enough screen time. I honestly didn't really care either way about Finn initially. He was just kind of there. But Sage made me feel like there must be something deeper than the version of Finn we saw. She was willing to wait 900 years for him, even after he left town without her in TVD.
I even loved how they showed that she had become a harder person trying to survive all of those centuries. We were able to feel her character development even with the limited time we saw her. I wish her and Finn had more time together. One thing I don't get is why she didn't seem to try and rescue Finn at any point. I get it would have been going up against the Mikaelsons, which isn't wise. But in 900 years, I feel like she would have been desperate enough to do it.
6. Keelin Malroux
While I hate how Keelin was introduced, I loved her character. She was a strong, intelligent woman who didn't let anyone tell her what to do. Which is why I did find her and Freya to come out of nowhere a bit. But she was a great addition to the Mikaelson family. She definitely leveled Freya out a bit. I also liked that she brought Freya more into the human world. Freya was very isolated in the supernatural world and Keelin showed her there was more to the world.
I only wish we could have seen Keelin in more situations than just with Freya. I wanted to see her interact with the Mikaelsons more or with the wolves.
5. Lexi Branson
I will never forgive Damon for what he did to Lexi. She had one episode in Season 1 but brought so much with her. She showed us that vampires could feed from humans but still be good. She was such a great friend to Stefan and would have been so protective of Elena and her friends. I just loved of free and fun Lexi was.
Every time Lexi was brought back, her only concern was her friend. To the point that she saved Damon, who treated her terribly and killed her, so that Stefan wouldn't lose his brother. Honestly, she should have saved herself. But that just wasn't who she was.
4. Jenna Sommers
Jenna may be pushing it as a "side character" since she was a regular character in the first two seasons, but she wasn't a series regular. Jenna was incredible. She was so young and in school, but she took over caring for her niece and nephew when her sister died. She was one of the best parental figures on the show.
I loved that we got to see all sides of Jenna. She was still young and wanted to have fun, but at the end of the day she put the kids first. She deserved more time knowing about the supernatural world. I wish she wasn't turned, but if she had to, I wish she had more time. She would have done everything to protect Elena and Jeremy and she did. She died trying to save Elena.
3. Sheila Bennett
Another potential main character. But even with her cameos, she wasn't a series regular. Sheila was such a badass witch and I hate that Bonnie didn't have more time to learn from her. Bonnie struggled so much initially because she was doing everything on her own. If it was up to Sheila, she would have been raising Bonnie to learn how to control her magic.
I swear the writers killed her off because they knew she wouldn't have let Bonnie do half the things she did. Sheila protected her granddaughter better than anyone. Also her and Bonnie together would have just been unstoppable. I loved their relationship.
2. Sophie Deveraux
When I first watch TO, I was so surprised by Sophie's death. I thought she was a series regular. She didn't deserve what Monique did to her after she sacrificed everything for Monique. Sophie was very similar to Jenna. She was wild and free, but as soon as her family needed her, she showed up.
Sophie was such a pivotal character in Season 1. The writers moved on too fast from her and Marcel. I wanted to see that play out more. Or even just show everyone react to her death. She deserved better.
1. Gia
This one probably isn't surprising. I love Gia. She was an important character in so many ways. She is the first recruit for Marcel and Josh when they are rebuilding their community. She is pivotal to the rebuilt. To the point that she helps Marcel bring Elijah into the fold. I wanted to see more of their community. Elijah and Marcel were finally on common ground and a big part of that was because of Gia. Gia had an ability to see people for who they are. She saw Marcel and Elijah for who they truly were and what they needed. I also just loved Elijah and Gia.
I loved that the vampire faction wasn't solely revolving around the Mikaelsons at this time. Gia should have lived to help Marcel continue to rebuild. After Season 1 the factions felt very disjointed and I think having main characters in each would have helped. It never felt like the Mikaelsons were a part of the vampire faction. They were their own and the vampire faction just kind of went away until they were needed.

Hi! First of all, I absolutely adore reading your take and insights on Five's feelings throughout the years before the subway. It's hard for me to believe he only fell for her through boredom and survival because they were trapped in time. There's just too much indicators in the series that points otherwise and your post sums it up so beautifully.
I'm really curious to see your take on Lila's perspective since you were so insightful with Five's. What her journey could potentially be?
One thing I thought was interesting was her reaction with Diego finding them in the cafe. Lila laughed and came clean about the situation right away. At that point, I don't know if she consciously entertained the idea of Five being anything else (poor Five). Diego meanwhile decided to focus on the fact that Five is in the CIA while he's only a delivery guy (a good symbolism of the relationship dynamic among these 3 and foreshadow maybe?). Five being a better fit for Lila than him, a fact that Diego recognizes but hates.
Another thing I thought was interesting was back in S2 when Five revealed he put Diego in the asylum to protect him and Lila thought it was sweet. I just feel anyone else (even the other siblings) wouldn't agree with his decision but Lila could already be seen as being very in tune with his reasoning.
Anyway I don't know if you are still active on this fandom (I know I arrived late to this then everyone else) so am happy to hear what you think if you feel up for sharing!
Oh, thank you for your question and your insights. Itâs been a long time since I received such an interesting question, so it truly made my day. Lila and her feelings for Five... thatâs actually a bit more complicated. But Iâll try to share my perspective on how I see it in the context of the whole story.
I think Five caught Lilaâs attention right from the start. Not romantically, but as someone who was, in a way, "cut from the same cloth." In many ways, they were similarâthey could challenge and provoke each other, keeping one another on their toes. Beyond that, Five had a reputation within the Commission, and I think that, in some way, impressed Lila. She wanted him to notice her and to acknowledge her in some way.
Lila was raised to fulfill expectations. It probably felt good to receive praise and recognition from someone she perceived as an authority. Iâve often had the feeling that Lila wanted to be seen by Five for exactly this reason. Yes, Five appeared visually young, but his intelligence and overall demeanor gave him a strong auraâan aura of an old soul. He had the ability to naturally take on a leadership role when needed.
I think that if Five had been physically older at the time they met, there might have been something romantic or physical between them much sooner. And maybe the parents plot wouldn't be there, who knows. However, because of his youthful appearance, that possibility probably didnât cross Lilaâs mind for a long time. I mean, she was naturally drawn to him, but not in that way.
On the other hand, Diego was someone she was physically attracted toâhe likely represented the possibility of a fresh start. But honestly? From the beginning, she thought he wasnât particularly bright, and when it came to romantic dynamics, they werenât on the same wavelength (a feeling that only deepened over time). In any case, the unexpected pregnancy changed things significantly.
And then there are Lilaâs parents. Itâs understandable that Lila went through a strong phase of hatred. But at the same time, when she learned the full circumstances, she could understand it better (since perhaps she herself had, at some point, been in a similar role to Fiveâs, thanks to the Commission). Even though they have another confrontation afterward, I think Lila had already partly forgiven him by then.
Their ability to collaborate despite everything highlighted their strengths as a team, even though they both kept up the pretense that being in each otherâs company was unpleasant. Still, considering how short the time frame was (S2+S3), itâs notable that Lila was later quite friendly toward Five. Despite their constant teasing, thereâs no apparent hatred between them anymore. Also, the scenes from S3 are a strong foreshadowing of things to come.
Then we have the six-year gap, during which Lila married Diego and took care of three children. Unfortunately, we saw so little of that period. Still, I think Lila had likely been struggling with dissatisfaction in the relationship for quite some time, and her dynamic with Diego was significantly strained.
And it was Five whom she chose as her partner in crime. This is just speculation, but I believe they might have grown closer over the years. As Five grew physically older and Lila became increasingly disillusioned with her relationship, she might have started to see him in a slightly different light.
Anyway, I believe her feelings fully surfaced in the subway, perhaps after a few months. (Though my headcanon is definitely that she had several thoughts about him even earlier...) But certainly not because Five was her current distraction or part of her survival. There was something there from the very beginning, but circumstances significantly influenced how things developed.
I think she finally realized just how deeply compatible they were. I am absolutely certain that Lila loved him. Not just because of all of that, but also because of what she was able to forgive him for (her parents) and the way she looked at him revealed what he meant to her...
I think it's a great shame that we are missing many cut scenes that would have revealed even more of this very interesting story.

As heartwarming as the epilogue is, It does encapsulate a problem I have with the show: itâs that it has these big payoffs that are usually satisfactory in the moment, but had very little build up
Rapunzel becoming a good queen?: On paper that is extremely fitting. But hereâs the thing: other than other characters mentioning that she was gonna become queen, we never actually got to see Rapunzel realizing just how big of a responsibility that is, and the process of her learning what it means to be a good ruler. Thereâs bits and pieces of it (Great Tree, the painting episode, etc) but it never really sticks
Eugene becoming captain of the guards?: Where did that even come from?! Honestly, it felt like the writers didnât really know what to do with him. The closest we got to an arc for him was the Dark Kingdom, but that gets kinda forgotten about, and doesnât affect his character all that much.
Cassandra going off to find a path thatâll make her truly happy?: Again, conceptually fitting, but it wasnât properly fleshed out or set up because for 99% of the season Cass whined about Gothel and like 5 other things that barely related
Varian reconciling with and feeling validated his dad?: Well Qurin wrote this letter back in âQueen for a Dayâ, shortly before getting trapped in the amber, and it was stated to have been something very important. But come season 3 it turns out the letter just says âI proud of U :)â , and all the baggage is instantly resolved, Varian is a okay now, yipeeeeee-. Like nice sentiment but we were promised more.
To be fair, I'm not at all positive that Rapunzel is supposed to be the queen at the end of the series. Her accepting the crown means she's officially ready to officially have the responsibility she's been carrying out for the entire season.
But when you look at the finale scene, Frederic and Arianna are still wearing their crowns.
But when you see them being casual (not "on the clock" as it were) they don't wear them. So, I don't think Rapunzel is meant to be queen in the epilogue, just officially ready to take on all responsibilities of Crown Princess.
I was never too fond of Eugene becoming Captain. It's sort of... the "natural" conclusion of "Fitzherbert P.I.," where he's shown not being a fit for the guard. Over the course of the series, he becomes more responsible, more reliable, and moreover, he's Rapunzel's #1 defender. I still don't like him as Captain, though, and I personally headcanon that he only keeps it up for a couple years, tops, before turning the guard over to Maximus. After all, the movie's epilogue implies that Max is the one who keeps the kingdom crime-free, and that Eugene has nothing to do with it.
Cassandra actually spent most of the series dissatisfied with her lot in life, and "Beginnings" even shows that she's not happy in Corona and would rather be somewhere else. Besides, I headcanon that she was soft-banished for taking Corona over. That's why she wasn't expected to help clean up the mess she made; because Rapunzel very lovingly told her she had to go and wasn't welcome there anymore.
As for Varian, his plot resolved at the beginning of S2. I know a lot of people really would have liked to see more with him and Quirin, but that wasn't a loose end for me. What little we saw of them showed that they were getting along better and making an effort to be a part of each other's lives. But while Varian achieved main character status, in actually, he's physically in 15 of 60 episodes (including the pilot), and two of those episodes ("Not In the Mood" and "King and Queen of Hearts") he's barely in them, so it's more like 13 episodes, which is less than 22% (21.66666666 etc%) of the series. Then he has his imaginary cameo in "Happiness Is..." So as much as people love him, he's not actually a major part of the overall series plot, in general, and his presence in S3 is more about how he now gets along with the gang than his dad. That's not really a flaw of the series, IMO.

now that the dust has cleared from the chaos for me irl, i want to officially thank you all for 3000 followers!! because wow. where do i even start?
this isn't a milestone i thought i would ever reach. i made this blog during my junior year of high school when i was bored as hell in online school, not knowing what would come of it, and honestly not expecting anyone to read anything iâve written. i exclusively wrote avatar fics (kind of embarrassing that a series i started at the beginning of my blog still isnt finished huh?) because it was what i had been watching most recently. i started to gain some recognition, made some friends, and slowly but surely i carved out my little corner of the internet. and now, 3 years, 3000 followers, and almost 500,000 words later, iâm going into my junior year of college with some of the best online friends a girl could ask for (shoutout to my day 1 @simplysolo for still being around and still being the best ever, and shoutout to all my other tumblr friends that have deactivated over the years</3 i miss you guys) a whole array of fandoms that iâve dabbled in, and a newly discovered thing for middle aged men. coolÂ
i truly cannot thank you all enough. iâve always been a writer, but this blog has given me a sorely needed creative outlet and made me more confident in my writing skills than ever. at the end of the day iâm just writing silly little x reader fics, but iâve truly had so much fun doing it! every single fictional man im in love with is also in love with me isnât that crazy!!!
a special, extended shoutout to the loveliest mutuals iâve picked up over the years. i wouldnât be half the writer i am and i wouldnât have half as much fun on here without you all. @simplysolo for being around since the beginning and truly being the greatest person on this app, i love you intensely, @sokkadora for being another one of my ogs (we dont talk anymore but i see you every so often on my dash and youâre doing great!!) @mcallmestiles for being one of the first avatar fics i ever read, traitor encouraged me to be a better writer and i hope youâre doing well with your medical career!! @tangledinlove for being my most famous mutual, the kindest person in the world, and being brought together through the power of lockwood, @giyuji and @milkiane who are both inactive but who i have to tag because i love them and i hope theyâre doing well; naomi you got me into the grishaverse and liane we were in the trenches of the stranger things revival together, @boneblushed for dealing with so much but still being phenomenal and lovely in every way, @tommymcartney for being so sweet all the time, my biggest cheerleader and encouraging my insanity in every fandom ive been a part of, @nghtwngs for being the only person who loses it over nikolai lantsov as much as i do, to all my new/more recent mutuals @hotchfiles @ma1dita @moowithmidnight @emiliehornby @supercutszns i can't wait to get to know or keep getting to know you!!! you're all so lovely!!! and all the mutuals i donât talk to as much as i should, i love you all and cherish you in my heart regardless of if we talk every day or have never said a single word to each other!! i donât want to tag you all because i donât want to bother you, but if youâre looking at this and thinking am i talking about you, i am. i love you. it takes a village and im so lucky to have you all as mineÂ
i canât believe itâs been 3 years, i canât believe iâm halfway done with college, and i canât believe we hit 3,000. truly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for reading my fics and letting me be some small part of your lives. i canât wait to write more for you all. keep a lookout for my 3k celebration post!Â

ok listen. look at me. look me in the eyes. the reason why i've repeatedly stated that NOTHING that might happen in the ofts finale would disappoint me is because i knew it would be entirely in character and whatever mess those messy characters would create, it would make sense. i am the author of the "i stand with my cancelled wife [boston]" post and that's still true. i have said before that i dislike top almost as much as i hate mew. so, why did i enjoy that finale? because it made sense.
best way i can suggest you to perceive everything that happened - since you are clearly not used to perceiving media that way - is by imagining that these are just real-life events a friend is recounting to you. this is exactly what happened. now tell me and tell me honestly: does it not all fall into place? and does your friend telling you about these things automatically mean they agree with them?
isn't top and mew hanging onto one another - while a random appearance of Some Guy instantly makes top feel like his relationship is under threat - completely in character? doesn't it make you look at your friend and go "damn, well that relationship is SO fucked"? and does it truly make you feel like your friend would disagree?
isn't boston trying to reconcile with the friend group and change for nick because he clearly needs friendship and close relationships completely understandable? doesn't it make you look at your friend and go "damn, well - regardless of how it happened - thank fuck he ended up leaving to new york alone and starting a new life, finding people who would understand him"? and does it truly make you feel like your friend would disagree?
isn't mew considering himself the judge, the jury, and the executioner and eventually not forgiving boston and consequently essentially removing him from the friend group completely realistic, considering the fact that he is highly moralistic and has ray and chueam wrapped around his little finger? doesn't it make you look at your friend and repeat "damn, thank gods boston moved on with his life"? does it truly make you feel like your friend would disagree?
isn't sand with his "yes, when i'm in love, i'm like a dog" thinking nick deserves 'better' than an open relationship completely true to his character? doesn't it make you look at your friend and go "damn, someone's projecting"? does it truly make you feel like your friend would disagree?
i can go on for-fucking-ever. throw something at me, if it doesn't make sense to you, and i will tell you why it does. because all of it does.
and i am sorry if you were expecting this series to be wrapped up in a pretty bow, ready for shipment to "everything is right and fair in the world" factory, but this was definitely not the series for that.
#i'm not tagging this and it better not breach containment#but for the anons that have flocked to me due to having the same opinions but percieving the series differently#here's my answer#archer speaks

Chapter 1 â Chapter 2 â Chapter 3
đđĄđ đđŽđ§đ đđ˘đŻđđ§ đđ˛ đđ˘đŚđ.
Warning! This Series Includes: Spoilers to Genshin Impact Lore, Bad Grammar (Not Beta Read) & The Characters Might Be OOC!
"God of Freedom...Where are the Others?"
You can feel a deadly chill run over your entire spine, your entire form shaking at not only the cold breeze that suddenly wafted through the area, but how your nerves began to act up.
That voice. That voice sounded almost like yours. How was that possible..? You were here, and you weren't talkingâthat can't be you, can it?
Venti, ever the sly son of a Truck-Kun he is, smiles, clearly unaffected by what you would assume is Istaroth's presence.
"Ah, Istaroth!" He says, beaming as if he's only just now realize it was truly the God of Time. "It's nice to hear from you again!"
Clearly, your past (?) self was not in the mood to indulge Venti, letting out an unamused hum in response.
"Answer my question, Barbatos. Where are the Others? I cannot sense them...in your current time. It should only be me absent of my duties..."
Okay, Past You confirmed. Your past self really has foreseen this, huh? Dropping lore bombs here and thereâat this rate, you were surprised how resilient you are by how often these attacks were coming, each lore bomb leaving a heavier dent than the last.
Venti only chuckles, amused. "Come on, Istaroth!~" he says, his voice taking on a slight childish sing-song tone. "Don't be like thatâI haven't heard from you in so long, and this is how you greet me?"
"Answer the question, Barbatos."
You swear you can hear tiredness and exasperation in Past You's voice. Holy cow, I really am a tired, single parent. You look over at Venti as your thoughts whisper in your own ear.
Venti's smile widens a little. "Oh, fine. I don't know, honestly." He pulls off a wide grin as he said so, as if proud.
Silence.
You weren't sure if you were going to be struck down alongside Venti for his spectacle.
"...Barbatos. You best not be lying."
"I'm not!" Venti raises his hands in front of his chest. "You know I don't kid around that much~" You can hear the living life seep out of Past You as they sigh.
"I will not waste anymore time. Barbatos, go search for the Others. I will personally see what I can do nowâin the pastâto help you find them."
You can feel a divine presence staring you down all of a sudden. It took a moment for you to stop the shivers running down your back as you (technically) meet Past You face-to-face (in a metaphoric sense, of course).
"Me, Who is of The Future. You are looking for 3 Others. You know them very well, I am sure."
Past You's voice was surprisingly gentle, calm and melodic. It was as if Past You could hear how much you were panicking on the inside or something.
Not that you would so openly tell anyone that you were having a heart attack every now and again, constantly reminding yourself that you just got isekai'd into a flipping video game.
"Uh....are they friends of mine?" You ask. "'3 Others' can be a lot of people..."
"You have 3 close friends, no?"
Oh.
Oh holy macaroni and cheese. THAT'S who Past You Was TALKING ABOUT?! You're three other friends that you also play Genshin with?
"Excuse me, but what?!" You exclaim, your voice accidentally rising a little. "Who are sending my friends here? Better yetâWHY are they sending us here?!"
"Me of the Future, please relax."
You hear Past You chuckle, as if expecting this to happenâas if amused. Good to know Past You enjoys your misery (not really).
You were sure the other three present were also silently taking joy of your mental breakdownsâyou can see that smug smile Venti was wearing from the corner of your eye as you stare into space like a weird buffoon.
"Just like this famed Traveler that stands beside you, Me of the Future, you will face many trials ahead. All of your friends have already identified themselves to fit in this world that is Teyvat. Under this luminsicent sky, you too, shall find yourself and rise back to the Heavens to reclaim your throne."
....Okay. Okay.
But with all due respect: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON? You were getting lore bombed for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with no stops.
You were really fricking Istaroth. Was it really time to throw your atheism out the window already?
"Your journey will begin in Liyueâyou are to reach for Inazuma. I'm sure the Traveler and Paimon shall guide you there. I must leave youâthere are some important matters I have to deal with in my current time. I wish you luck, Me of the Future."
With that being said, you felt Past You's presence fade, along with what remaining anemo was left. Except your hands felt weird to yourselfâwhich was odd, since they weren't feeling like that while you were talking to Past You.
"Well," Venti speaks, breaking the silence amongst them all. His gaze was set on you, his smile widening a little. "It seems that you've unlocked your powers, Y/N."
You look down at your hands, and to your astonishment (and horrorâsort of), your hands were filled with winds of anemo. How you were holding wind in your hands, you have no ideaâbut hey, to be fairâsome genshin logic throws your world's common sense and logic out of an imaginary window and into the unknown.
"What the heck...." You stare down at your hands. Venti chuckles.
"Well, this bard will leave you to the trusty hands of the Traveler and Paimon!" he cheers, smiling wide. He summons his lyre. "A new ballad for the famous Travelerâa song I shall produce and share for all of Mondstadt to hear!" With that being his way of saying farewell, the boy just ditches you right then and there.
You sigh. So much for being a "guide" for me, Venti, you think, deadpanning. 5 star-review for one part, thoughâhe did a pretty good job when it came to showing the Tree of Vanessa.
"Well..." You look over at Paimon and the Traveler. Paimon looks sheepish. "I guess we can show you around Teyvat to help you find your real-self. Right, Traveler?" They nodâthey were honestly too helpful for their own good sometimes. You sigh again.
"Thank you, both of you," you say, looking back down at your hands. Oh yeahâthey were still holding wind. "Uhh....does anyone know how I control anemo?"
"Oh! Paimon can teachâ"
The poor fairy did not finish her sentence before your hands engulfed more wind and became two mini tornados.
You're off to a great start, keep it up!

Ghost Rebel Side Note: This is probably a good time to mention that I don't play Genshin Impact myselfâI just indulge myself in the lore. So, in advance, I would like to apologize if I get any of the settings wrong! That is a mistake on my behalf, and I hope it doesn't affect your reading experience!
I don't usually do tag lists, but there are a few people who wanted me to tag them when this was out: @nymphsdomain @sielt
Again, allow me to apologize how long this took to be posted! My motivation is at constant writer's block since Honkai: Star Rail came into my life đ Nevertheless, I'm not jumping out of the Sagau Genshin franchise just yet lolâ
Fair Warning: I might take a small break from working on this series due to my lack of motivation, but I promise you this series will not be cancelled anytime soon!

How would you rank the Sam and Max episodes?
This is something I genuinely WAS going to do... but my massive workload and how tired I was at the time won out, a sign I was getting the cold i'm still fighting to finish my christmas reviews on time.
Anyways
Beyond the Alley of the Dolls: Is the clear #1. Recency bias is probably in play a TINY bit.. but it has all the jokes you'd expect, the most enjoyable puzzles in the series with me only having to use my guide occasionally, and genuine great tension and that climax is fantastic. While the season still ended on a high note, it's defintely the biggest and best ending of the trilogy. 2. The Mob the Mole and the Meatball: Season 1's best and honestly the best setting in the series.. and the latter games are none too shabby. It's just such a simple yet messed up concept: a chuck e cheese as a mafia front. Give those mafiso teddy bear heads and you have an outright classic. 3. The Tomb of Sammun Mak: The format bender really helped this one: the reel switching is the series best gimmick to shake things up and is a lot of fun. It's also their best asset flip, is packed with some iconic jokes and is charming as hell. 4. Situation: Comedy: While I loved these games from Culture Shock, Situation Comedy is where everything clicked: better puzzles, a great new environment to explore, great additions in mr featherly and two all time great bits: cooking without Looking and Subrban Cowboys (Their probably hiding a cow) It's only not higher up because it has that wonky as hell cow puzzle. I don't mind a long puzzle but I do mind when the puzzle is just "ask until you get the right question but we won't give you clues as to what the right answer are". It's fine if you can give wrong ansers and get great jokes, not so much in a loop but ot their credit the developers learned that lesson. Mostly.
4. The City that Dares Not Sleep: The touching, hilarous, and heartwrenching coda to the whole saga. The puzzles are a bit lighter, not hitting quite that good ballance of "Tricky but managable" and just being managable mostly. But it's still a standout conclusion to the best game in the trilogy.
5. Abe Lincoln Must Die!: This one like Situation Comedy would rank higher were the puzzles less frustrating or the hike back and forth from the street to the whtie house not tedious. That said while both of those can be grating... Abe Lincoln Must Die is just that funny. You have Max running for president against a giant stone abe lincoln, Superball's debut and of course the war song. I'm really disapointed the later games dropped musical numbers, as War and World of Max are bangers. I still listen to the war song regularly and probably will again just bringing it up here. 6. The Penal Zone: A brilliant start to their best season, a llittle lower due to that pigeon. Yes i'll never not resent the pidgeon pizza puzzle, as what the hell was that. But the chapter overall is fun, hilaroius and lets you get into the new groove of things nicely. Plus Max snorting at the penal zone's name will never not be funny.
6. Bright Side of the Moon: The most gorgeous chapter of the original game , with a grand set piece to close it out, a great villian reveal and of course... world of max. once again the song helps really boost this but it was a truly perfect ending to such a batshit season. 7. Night of the Raving Dead: IS a lot of fun. It has the worst puzzle in the trilogy, the dj puzzle, but damn if Jurgen isn't entertaning. Making a vampire lord an overly dorky scene kid was genius, and adding in that poor monster and of all people superball, and pulpy good flint paper and you have a stew goin.
8. They Stole Max's Brain: This one, like many is only so low thanks to one thing dragging it down: in this case the entire sammun mak act. I dreaded it going in and while it was better than I braced myself for it was still not great. You take my lack of love for stock ancient egyptian themeing (You can use it well but you have to work at it as it has cool astetics but is often used clusmily and sameily) and "The world is changed but only one person remember it plots" and i'm gonna have ab ad time. But the first two acts are so fun it compensates. 9. Culture Shock: Culture Shock is decent and is just above the bottom because while funny, a great start to the series and solid... the later chapters of both it's own game and the series as a whole really step it up. It dosne't help the main guests are the soda poppers who i've made my opinons of clear. Only specs dosen't make me want to kick his ass, to build a machine to kick his ass, to build an empire to house the machine to kick his ass!
10. What's New Beelzebub: Is solid. It's this low due to it's puzzles and the soda poppers reveal being VERY mid. I knew going in.. but that's the case with ALL the main villians and Hugh Blizz and The Narrator's reveals are way more effective: Bliss comes off as off from the start and the narrator is well set up whlie still being effective with an aamazing reveal. The Soda Poppers are just little weenies and them being revealed as the lords of the dammned isn't funny it's just.. what. You had Jurgen RIGHT THERE. The Soda Poppers really do ruin everything
11. Ice Station Santa: Starts well and has some great gags, torture me elmer is the best as is buster blaster
12. Chariots of the Dogs: Is fun, I just felt other chapters were better. But the payoff for the birthday and boscow do help this one up. The sexist humor not so much. Still has neat time travle 13. Reality 2.0: This one is only not bottom because it debuts the COPS. It gave us the COPS who rightly go on to play a bigger role in the next two games as the developers clearly loved them and so do I. It also has a fantastic finale, that graet mario joke and more I forgot, saving it from the bottom. But my god this one smells of "we ran out of time and needded a cheap chapter to make 6." I wouldn't be suprised if bduget is why the sequels are both 5 chapters instead as this one just.. asset flips to hell and isn't super fun about it. It TRIES but the digtial setting just feels lifeless. I think this one hasn't been helped by the sequels all having bigger more expansive sets, while this just feels half assed.
14. Moai Better Blues: has some frustrating puzzles like the cloud one, abe lincoln at his worst and that fucking surfboard minin game. Add in some mild racism and this one is just meh. The weakest chapter of them all. Some good jokes but that's standard for sam and max. What's not standard is that goodamn surfboard. There's a few good jokes but this feels like a mishmash of ideas rather than a more coherent chapter. Chariot Reused a lot but at least it was funny
