Heyyy! I just wanted to first say I love your page it is absolutely a happy place for me tbh and I love the interactions you post. That being said, body language anon caught my attention in their last ask when they spoke about lestappen’s passion for the sport and f1 as an institution and would like to add some thoughts from a social-psychological pov.

I have also been thinking a lot about why lestappen stands out to many of us and why and how we got here and I think body language anon gets it right about how rather than big loud moments it is the smaller things that is so engrossing about their interactions. An account on tik tok (i have tried but can’t find it now) posted about how lestappen is “female gaze coded” precisely because of the little details (the boots, waits grab, shared history that is actually fanfiction worthy material). It is the purity and the meaningfulness of their interactions that make them so special rather than having two guys who are very obviously overzealous in their interactions (which has its appeals but clearly not to us- we like the angst and enemies to lovers trope too much for that)

Now from a socio-psychological standpoint I really want to take shipper goggles off for a moment and look at their relationship in their specific environment and the importance of homosociality. Homosociality is a theory that refers to the relations of same sex individuals in a society or given institution that sets them apart from the other sex- and other instituons/groups. And added layer that is slipping into Freudian territory-though I’m cautious- is that there is a latent homoerotic nature in same sex interactions- especially with men. This is not necessarily in a sexual way but more in a mutually reinforcing emotional way. Men in a give institution will seek the reinforcement of other men in their group and that is the crux of masculine homosociality and masculine relations- being self-reinforcing via socialisation with other men you hold in high regard due to their gender and their standing in the institution/group.

F1 as a male dominated institution and full of such reinforcing masculine interactions (driver-driver/TP/mechanics/fans (which is also why men find it hard to digest that women like F1 because they consider it an invasion of their sphere)) within this little system max and Charles have carved out special roles for one another where they seem to both especially seek out reinforcement from the other precisely because of that special shared passion for the sport and most likely because they both consider themselves above the rest of the men in the institution but equal and the same to one another which is why they seek each others reinforcement which can be literally anything that conveys approval (active listening, mirroring/mimicking, referencing shared history, accepting/initiating touch, laughing at jokes). There are some videos especially of Max in post race interviews where he looks almost jealous of Charles talking to another driver-and giving another driver the approval that belongs to Max. It becomes childish at that point with Max likely acting in a way that indicates his want to re-establish his special position with Charles- this may be by making jokes, eye contact or anything else which would result in instant approval. I can go into neuroscientific reward processes associated with seeking approval being equivalent to a drug and the best way to describe it is that if one of them shows any approval to the other it hits literally like neurotropic crack precisely because of the nature of their institutions and the special position of the other relative to themselves within that institution.

Which is also why I think that no matter how many times they interact publicly or privately they won’t ever have a relationship like Max and Daniel or Charles and Carlos where it is openly friendly and there is no slight tension (expressed by childish giddiness- like body language anon says with fidgeting and leg bouncing) caused by the fact that they have a long history that has carved out a specific place for the other driver as the approval-giver and becoming close friends would alter that dynamic to an un-acceptable degree. They will most likely alway remain flighty around each other, afraid of overstepping and messing up.

Kerr Avon's costumes, rated

The sequel to Romana II's costumes, rated, here by popular* request! (*maybe not very popular.)

Screengrabs from here (copied rather than linked per their FAQs). Invaluable record of what Avon actually wears in which episode from here. I haven't included overcoats, spacesuits, or anything Avon doesn't actively choose to wear, like prison clothes. Which means that rating this monstrosity

is left as an exercise for the reader.

I've also not done every single variation on black jackets with studded panels, even when they are technically different black jackets with studded panels, because otherwise we'd be here all night.

Ugh. It's fine. The heights of bonkersness that Blake's 7 costume design would reach are not even really hinted at here. It's a perfectly reasonable outfit - grey shirt, grey trousers, grey tabard-thing. Add a name badge and Avon could be stocking shelves in a fancy supermarket. I'll allow that it does look comfortable, which will not be a theme of much else on this list. 5/10.

As seen in Time Squad.

I don't hate the brown patchwork thing (though brown is rightly Blake's colour), but what's going on with the larger square over his stomach? I feel like he's about to do some welding or something and it's there to protect his clothes, but it is his clothes. Avon only wore this outfit once, and who can blame him? 2/10.

As seen in The Web, Seek-Locate-Destroy, Mission to Destiny, Duel, Project Avalon, Breakdown, and Deliverance.

I think this one may have suffered from the passage of time. Because I look at it and think, why has Avon chosen to dress like an old-fashioned stereo system? But from the vantage point of 1978, I guess Avon had chosen to dress like a decidedly modern stereo system. Look at those rounded corners, he could be a first-gen iPod. And the matching grey of collar and cuffs is a nice touch. None of this answers the question of why he has buttons across his tits, but there are some things that are not for us to know. 8/10.

As seen in Bounty and Orac.

Oooh, green. Green is a nice change. And if you're watching Blake's 7 and you're enjoying those green sleeves, you'd better make the most of them, because other than one very notable exception, this is the last time that Avon wears an outfit that isn't brown, white, black or shades of grey for the entire rest of the series. The rest of it looks a bit like someone's Star Trek Discovery uniform cosplay got out of hand. 6/10, because green.

As seen in Redemption and Killer.

Obviously, this is a classic. And full marks to Paul Darrow for wearing a costume that was literally bought from a sex shop and making it look like something that anyone might wear to their normal day of fighting oppression and engaging in homoerotic tension. 10/10.

As seen in Shadow, Horizon, Gambit, and Children of Auron.

OK fine I threw away the term "classic" too soon, this is the true classic, the time Avon decided to dress as a thermal blanket and then pair that with thigh-high boots. ICONIC. What I love about this is aside from being batshit, it's actually kind of a nice outfit? I imagine that shiny fabric was absolute hell to work with but the gathering at the shoulders means it hangs surprisingly well.

It also gains at least 5 bonus points for featuring in this, one of my all-time favourite Blake's 7 moments:

I wish I could find it as a gif, but you'll just have to join me in pretending these images are moving instead. And in heaving a nostalgic sigh for the era when men were allowed to have normal bodies on TV. 15/10.

I've tried to go for just one main outfit per episode, because this is already very long and we're only about halfway through. But I had to make an exception for matching! outfits! And all the better for being an outfit that looks great on all three of them. I only wish that Avon could have had some silver boots like Jenna is wearing, I think it would really have completed the look. 9/10.

As seen in Weapon, Pressure Point, Countdown, and Dawn of the Gods.

In some ways, this costume is quite practical. Avon is wearing something not a million miles from bikers' leathers here, and the quilted part of the chest and back would presumably offer him a bit of protection if he got into a fight. But also, it's the colour and style of a brothel sofa, and there's no way in hell he could wear this and retain the ability to lift his arms above his head.

God, I love this show. 10/10.

As seen in Trial, Hostage, Voice From the Past, The Keeper, Star One, Aftermath, and Powerplay.

I have less to say about this because - and I mean this in full tribute to the Blake's 7 costume designers - it's just a nice jacket! It stays in keeping with the design trends we see throughout the series, with panels of different fabrics, and spacewear shiny silver bits, but ultimately you could wear this on the street today and no one would give you a second look. I quite like that about it. 8/10.

As seen Aftermath. (And the loose black shirt in Voice From the Past is similar too).

Maybe this is just my mid-00s goth-adjacent phase showing through, but I am, and always will be, a sucker for a man in this kind of shirt. 8/10, please don't make me justify this further.

The first of many similar black outfits, where I'm going to be selective or this will get tedious very quickly. I think this is the best of them; after this, the 80s started up in earnest, and Avon's shoulders were never allowed to be their natural width again. 9/10.

My parents haven't been camping in years, but somewhere in the attic they still have an old tent, which lives in a bag that looks a lot like this outfit. As if I needed any more reasons to dislike The Harvest of Kairos. 1/10.

Avon what are you doing. Brown is not your colour. I think I might headcanon that this is Blake's jacket, because aside from the brownness it also seems to be a fair bit too big for Avon. After a couple of seasons of squeezing him into the lobster outfit and other tight leather things, the costume designers seem to have swerved hard into boxy shapes from this point onwards. I disapprove. Honestly, I was going to skip this one except that I love what Dayna is wearing. Wish Avon could have some of that energy. 2/10.

Let's pause for a second, look to the left, and appreciate that Dayna is wearing another fabulous outfit. Now let's take a deep breath, and look at the utter monstrosity that Avon is wearing. Like a matador crossed with a bumper car. 0/10.

Avon wears some kind of black jacket with studs for nearly all of season D, but I've picked this as the definitive one. I don't know if there's some kind of clever character development thing going on here with how big this costume is, like Avon is expanding into his leadership role, but weighed down by the responsibility too. It could be deliberate, it could just be what fashion was like in the early 80s.

What I do know is that however meaningful this costuming might be, it's not flattering. 5/10, and Avon finishes the series, sadly, no better dressed than he began it.

as stated on various pinterest icons and in the wiki, it’s conflicted on her name. for a while she was thought to be called sarah, but the drone that’s actually sarah is the one that said “mr doorman, there’s been an incident.” however, she’s still referred to as sarah. there’s so many conflicts. but as a compromise, i’ve been calling her sara. (little secret- it’s a name i no longer go by. the sarah/sara beef is REAL. that H has caused a massive divide in the sara/sarah world.) (no joke i actually had a HUGE rivalry with a “sara” until i realized i was nonbinary and changed my name LMAO)

Saw a post a while back about favourite and least favourite bits of star trek and I wanted to join in. So here's my two cents :

Original Star Trek

Favourite: Spock. Bones. Scotty. Uhura. Kirk. Chapel. Sulu. Chekov. EVERYONE. The sets. The lighting. The camp. The blatant homoeroticism. The do or die for each other crew. That time they found an alien that was just a pomeranian wearing fancy headgear. The fact that every episode is self contained and ends with a little bit where everyone stands around the conn and chats. Leonard Nimoy. Sulu with a sword. Sulu the rest of the time.EVERYONE. This is my favourite trek, and the one I return to over and over again. First trek is best trek.The bell bottom trousers and cuban heel knee high boots. More kinky boots, modern trek, d'ya hear me? More kinky boots.

Least favourite: When the show reveals how terribly it can abandon everything that makes it good. Of all the episodes, there's about a third I just cannot watch. Times where they fill it full of weird christian metaphor.

TNG

Favourite: Geordie and Data. And Spot. I keep trying to watch this but I've only ever seen A Fistful of Datas. IT was great. And horribly horribly slow. (oh. And one where Picard chases bandits through the ship armed only with a saddle and while dodging a laser car wash. That one was great. Except for when I rewatched this as an adult. When it was horrifying.)

Least favourite: Invented the holodeck which gets used too much later and which always confuses me. Can't watch holodeck episodes without obsessing over how it works. Everything is carpeted and it panics me. Why are there wall to wall carpets in the future. In high traffic areas. Also it was genrerally too slow and difficult to watch. And whil I love Hornblower I have neither a headmaster nor a Naval Captain fetish, so Picard never does it for me.

DS9

Favourites: Everyone. Everyone together. I want Sisko to be my dad. Or my friend. Or my Captain. All of the above. Julian Bashir trans icon. Jadzia Dax trans icon. Everyone is poly and queer. Ferengi episodes. Kira Nerys lesbian energy. Every 36 hours I turn into a liquid. I can swim. The whole Odo marrying Lwxwna episode. Our Man Bashir. He was more than a hero. He was a Union Man. It's written all over his back.

Least favourite : When they switched to serialised I do struggle to keep watching. Taking away Kira's butch haircut and stompy boots. Show never recovered from that. Any time they give Kira a beard. I've never finished the series bc I couldnt face the Julian/parents arc or the Jadzia death/Julian and Ezri thing. When they stopped Andrew Robinson from being on screen with Siddig El Fadil. Any time Dukat got more than a minute airtime. Any executive decision Rick Berman made.

Voyager:

Favourites: Seven of 9. Harry Kim. Janeway. B'elanna. The time they all opereated the French Resistance out of a bar. Stand alone episodes. The time Janeway definitely slept with Amerlia Earhart. The time Janeway ran around in a dirty singlet with a big gun. That episode where they hide the telepaths in the buffers of the transporters to sneak past a moustache twirling villain while Janeway flirts with him like they're both opponent pirate captains with insane homoerotic tension. Ther's coffee in that nebula.

Least favourites: The Doctor. Seven not getting a uniform. Tom Paris any time he's not just Harry Kim's boyfriend. Janeway's inconsistent characterisation. The fact that phages might be a real world last line defence against antibiotic resistance but thanks to voyager it will always terrify me. I've never made it to the end because Tom/B'elanna was too hard to watch and I didn't know how to deal with them actually getting home. Ithink they never should have. Any executiev decision Rick Berman made.

Enterprise:

Favourites: I have seen two episodes and Hoshi Sato has my heart forever. Phlox is great. Tight-wound angry queer british guy can stay too. Travis is great. Theme song is terrible and I love it. It's so incongruent. Sounds like the sort of country song you listen to while committing suicide in the bathtub. Can't stop singing it. The fact that it killed Rick Berman's career.

Least favourite: Everything else. The dog in particular. Why is it there. Why is it soulless. Poor Jolene Blalock. Why are their uniforms so bad. I love a jumpsuit but they didn't colour code them properly! Every executive decision Rick Berman made.

JJ Abrams:

Favourites: Nothing. This is terrible.. If you can't make up you own characters why are you butchering my boys. Go away.

Least Favorites: Trying to remake wrath of Khan (the worst movie with the original cast imo) without even bothering to buiild the relationship that makes us care. Why is he still white? Why are they in a brewery? Why is Pike a hot dad now? He's a wreck of the american masculine heroic ideal who exists as a counterpoint to Kirk. If tumblr wants to make his doomed ass a poor little meow meow fine. JJ Abrams shouldnt put him in his movie. Every exectuive decision they made about women in this movie. Making Sulu gay in massive disrespect to Takei's depiction of him and Takei's own acting skills. Making everyone else straight in the worst possible way. Pretending miniskirts in 2009 meant the same thing as in 1969. Also I stoppped after the first couple because it was starting to feel like i was just doing to make myself mad. Blue orbs. The fact their chracterisation feels like if you'd never seen star trek but a cabbie had explained it you once badly, and the fact that literally WAS WHAT HAPPENED

Discovery.

Favourites: Wanted to love it. Couldn't see what was going on because it was too dark. Everytime I tried in spite of that I fell in love with many parts of it, then they immediately fucked it over. Michael Burnham? In jail for unfair reasons. Cap. Georgiou? Dead. Burnham should be Captain, and I think she still isn't. I don't know I couldnt see. Etc etc. Apparently it gets better but It's too serialised to start in the middle.

Least Favourites: Too dark. Bad uniforms (Why would you bring back the ENTERPRISE uniforms of all things?) The fact that klingons are now middle eastern coded so that they still align with the zeitgeist of who we're being xenophobic again right now. (OOHscary FIGHTYculture is Russian. No WAIT black. NO middle eastern. yeah) Jason Isaacs. I liike my villains NOT on the crew. Personal preference but it's just not my kind of star trek when it's this dark. Thematically and visually. Why does EVERYONE have to be related to Spock (ok this one dates back to tos and it's annoying if funny there too)

Lower Decks: I don't do this format of cartoons.

Prodigy: Favourite: its a kids show and has those priorities but I had a surprising amount of fun. Usually I don't do animation but this is relatively watchable.Despite feeling like it's also star wars and Indiana Jones and a ton of other types of story all at once, they also captured Star Trek better than any of the other modern ones. Janeway. Og murph. Wesley Crusher cameo. REFERENCE TO OPERATION ANNIHILATE MY BELOVED!

Least Favourites: Janeway being given physiology of a Barbie doll. Murph being turned from a intelligent adult slug with dog energy into a pointless toddler. It would have been kinder to kill him. Desynchronization of voice and face in a way that makes it tiring to watch (I'm just fussy about animation). Janeway in a singlet revival ruined by aforementioned Barbie physique. Give me older fatter buffer Janeway!

SNW:

Too dark to see. Also stop just redoing the original characters. Make your own. For years now I get excited about new Star Trek and it ALWAYS either too dark to see or too animated to see or just about tos characters done badly. At which point I'll just go watch tos. Also remember when Star Trek uniforms actually looked futuristic? Yeah, me too. I know everyone likes this one there's probably a lot of good in it but I can't get into it.

Turn the lights back on and maybe we can talk. And at least Rick Berman isn't involved.

talking about my wip/go to fantasy for when im bored in class because i have nothing to do

it doesn't really have a name, but it's about 3 flatmates who are kinda broke and in their 20s (except for steve but i'll get to him in a moment), one of them's rock band, and the sheer chaos that they are constantly in.

we have:

Seb (sebastian) - he/him, gay, plays guitar, is a complete disaster and a total mood, looks like a metalhead but listens to all rock music, really ("i don't see any difference, rock is rock"). he's a bit of a dumbass but not that stupid and really cares about his friends (even if he seldom shows it). he works in a record shop since he dropped out of university, now he is in a band.

Vivian - she/her, maybe bisexual?? she doesn't know (i don't know either i haven't decided yet), aspiring stylist/movie costume designer, sleep deprived and coffee dependant, sarcastic sense of humour, can't stand her flatmates, actually a nice person if you aren't seb or his bandmates (except eve).

Steve - he/him, the most middle-aged-dad-literally-just-some-guy ever, ghost. yeah, he's a ghost, he died 30 years ago (in the dullest way you can imagine) and since then he haunts the house. not that he cares about all that haunting stuff tho, he's just here to read his newspapers and chill. he can't really chill though because he has to hear the band practice and vivian argue with seb every. single. day.

then there's the Haunters (because of steve haunting the house), seb's band, and we have:

David - he/him, trans and bi, singer, he and seb were best friends in middle school and high school, they were inseparable until he got a girlfriend (who looked suspiciously a lot like seb) and went in the same university as her. when they split up, like 2-3 years later, he realized uni wasn't for him and went to find seb again. seb is in love with him since they were 16.

Ash - they/them, aroace, bass player, met seb in the record shop and have been friends for a couple of years. they're the youngest member of the band and has been basically adopted by them. tiny and angry, has a collection of sunglasses and gets bored easily because of no attention span whatsoever (they're literally me except i don't play bass).

Eve - she/they, lesbian, drummer, vivian's best friend (who doesn't approve of her being in the band tho) and fashion icon. can't drive but loves to and doesn't let anyone touch her car. she is the one who knows seb and david the least, so she's constantly going insane over their always present sexual tension and obvious mutual untold love.

basically the main story is: vivian wants to hold a party to show how cool she is and how good her clothes are so that she can get a job and start her career as a designer, meanwhile david arrives unannounced to reunite with seb after 2 or 3 years since they last saw each other. they decide to put together their old high school band again, ash joins them and later so does eve (who met the band kinda by accident). they start playing together and they like it so much they manage to convince vivian to let them play at her party. while her, eve and ash organize the party and try to figure out all the problems and trouble they find along the way (steve tries to help too), seb and david have to put back together their frienship by being extremely gay and even more oblivious with each other. the day of the party comes and everything is set up (more or less), the guests are all there and vivian is confident. all the attention should be on her creations but when the haunters start playing they steal the spotlight with an amazing performance and the frontman and guitarist being unintentionally very homoerotic. the tension between the two finally breaks after they kiss on stage and they Realize a LOT of things. but the show must go on, they keep playing while ash is unimpressed (they saw that coming) and eve is SHOCKED (they didn't), but not for long because steve arrives to see what the hell is going on in the living room and he's VERY angry because he just wants to read but there's too much noise, so he freaks out all the guests. they all run away, stuff catches fire, it's a MESS, and vivian is FURIOUS. just before she's about to commit 4 murders in a row (not 5 because steve is already dead) seb and david escape and there's like a wholehearted conversation about their feelings (spoiler: they're been super in love with each other since before david got a gf but didn't realize it) also they make out a little??? idk i'm too aroace for this. meanwhile the rest of the band is also safe from vivian's rage because a woman approaches her and tells her how cool this whole performance was (clearly thought it was fake) and offers her a job. everyone gets an happy ending but the story WILL go on because the hunters are gonna keep playing and maybe they'll get famous and vivian too, who knows? (i don't)

but also!!!! youre right in the fact that they couldve been done sm better and now that im past the immediate post s2 halo im like wow. the class inequality and piltover vs zaun conflict was rlly set aside for all this huh. couldve made the relationship much more interesting in arcs 2 and 3 esp but thats just me

yeah i think caitvi as a ship could’ve worked!! it just felt… strange?? the way everything was handled?? like it was pretty clear from the start that it would be endgame but it felt like caitvi was prioritized over any satisfying conflict resolution and the themes that had been present from the start. we had a really good foundation for either an interesting redemption arc or almost a corruption arc of sorts, but we didn’t really get either?? it was like the writers wanted caitvi to happen but none of the things that made the dynamic compelling were properly addressed 😭

i do get that a lot of just comes down to not being able to fit everything in a season (there should’ve been a s3 and i’ll die in this hill) but still. maybe my expectations were too high but i am disappointed 💔 and iirc i saw something one of the writers said about how the whole police brutality and inequality between piltover and zaun was to… create more tension between caitvi??? 😭 like “oh caitlyn’s and enforcer and we want SOME obstacles between caitvi… let’s make it so vi’s parents were killed by enforcers!!” which is just. what. if you’re going to create a narrative about oppression and cycles of violence it probably shouldn’t be just to make the yuri more interesting… alas.

i still don’t think it would be all that difficult to just have caitlyn confront her biases onscreen though… we get hints of it but she never really acknowledges the depths of the inequality that she often perpetuates herself. i think if we got more episodes it could be incorporated in a way that felt genuine, but we could’ve also just had her not lean as fully into the dictator role?? it would be rlly fun to see her acting almost as a spy of sorts instead of just. straight up gassing zaun. rushing their development in s1 felt different from rushing cait’s development in s2, bc we don’t really get any solid proof that she’s changed her mind??? part of me is like okay that happened but what does cait think about zaun rn. because we don’t know!! and it irks me so bad 😞

alas. they’re gonna break up and then get back together and get married and then divorce and end up in a weird on again off again situationship-like limbo for the rest of their days. to me.

samantha evans transfers to mckinley and immediately becomes the star of the girl’s soccer team

a funny bit would be that she still dates the same girls, and she’s attractive enough that literally every girl shows some attraction to her wether or not they are queer. sam makes them all question it

she’s a country girl, so she always waits her hair in braids and wears cowboy boots just bc i think it’s fun

she’s invited to join the glee club by santana, who openly flirts with her a lot. she joins because it seems like a fun way to make friends

she sings her first duet with quinn, and gets quinn to question her sexuality. they date for a little because every gay girl needs a phase where she dates a girl that looks just like her. but quinn goes back to finn later and tries to erase her “gay phase” from the minds of the school.

on the other hand, kira hummel (bc if blaine’s a girl then kurt probably should be too) volunteers to look into their competition, the warblers.

the warblers are an all girls acapella group at the all girls prep school, dalton. kira meets the charismatic and charming blaire, lead soloist of the dalton warblers and is immediately smitten.

the two don’t really interact much, seeing as sam transfers away just when blaire gets to mckinley. when they do meet, they fight just because tensions are runnng high before sectionals.

through the rest of junior year, they hardly know each other. but then they’re two of the five seniors left in glee club, and they end up running for president and vp together.

it’s britt’s idea, and she’s always been nice to sam, so she does it just to be nice. but it turns out that blaire’s pretty cool. when she’s not doing the whole uptight private school thing

once blaire’s single, she goes through a really rough time dealing with insecurities, depression, and self-loathing for what she did. sam finds herself hanging out around just being goofy in hopes of picking up her spirits

they go to the comic shop together, and blaire listening to sam infodump about spider-man. they get coffee and lunch, and suddenly for the first time in a while, sam’s got herself a best friend. it was kind of an accident, honestly.

and when mr schue leaves the glee club in finn’s hands, but then finn has to go back to college for his actual classes (shut up this is what happened), the two of them end up kind of running the glee club?

britt goes to college early/late, and tina and artie are very focused on scholarships and classes and shit, so the two of them lead the club, work on getting them back in the competition, picking weekly lessons and helping the littles get over their love triangles and squabbles

they try to help marley with her bigger issues, but the best they really can do is encourage her to go to counseling. but they work together as a team, and they’re pretty damn good at it.

sam knows she’s into blaire, but she doesn’t want to push her when she’s not over her break up with kira yet.

blaire knows she’s into sam, but doesn’t want to push her when she’s straight. she has no idea sam dated quinn last year, and never picked up on sam’s bisexuality.

the new directions are kind of tired of watching them flirt.

they have a typical homoerotic sapphic friendship where they joke-flirt a lot and act like they’re dating but never really make any effort to make their lines clear on what anything means

so they both just suffer for a while

Here are some real life Tokusatsu shows that inspired the show in my fic what if the real steel samurai fandom was the friends we made along the way, focusing on the enemies to homoerotic partners aspect. Almost all of these are with men because unfortunately I don’t know any shows in this genre with women as the main characters

Kamen Rider Ex-Aid

This is what I would recommend if you’re interested in the tension aspect of enemies-to-lovers. Watching this made me go ‘wait I need to increase the homoeroticism in my fake show by at least 300%’

The premise for this is that people are getting infected by sentient computer viruses so a bunch of doctors have to transform into video game characters to heal their patients. (Yes it is as ridiculous as it sounds. they’ll be like “it’s time to perform a surgery” and then go beat up a guy in a funny costume)

The main character is a former competitive gamer turned doctor intern who is just really doing his best to help people while also wrangling three other doctor Kamen Riders with enormous trust issues and martyr complexes, and also trying to avoid this one game disease guy who is weirdly obsessed with fighting him.

The homoeroticism in this comes in the form of people pushing people against walls in the middle of arguments, villains that spend way too much time thinking about the main character in a “nobody is allowed to touch him because i will be the one to defeat him” way, going from calling someone your ‘fighting partner’ (opponent) to ‘fighting partner’ (best friend and trusted ally), cradling a dying person in your arms, etc.. Also one guy transforms into a motorcycle and cannot fight unless someone rides him, I am not joking.

Kamen Rider Blade

This series is enemies-to-homoerotic friends in more of a tragic star-crossed lovers way and gave me inspiration for Cloud and Murasaki more towards the end of their show.

The premise is that 10,000 years ago there was a Battle Royale type fight between the Undead which are the immortal representatives of 53 species, each of which matches a card in the typical deck. The Human Undead won, allowing humans to flourish on earth, and the rest were all sealed up in their corresponding card. Now they’ve all gotten released. The main character works for a research company trying to seal them all back up, and one of the other major characters is an Undead who lives with a widowed woman and her young daughter as he tries to understand humans.

The homoeroticism in this is like “I don’t know why I trust you, I just do.” “I hate everyone in the world except like two singular people, but you have won my trust and affection.” “Literally everyone we meet says that we should be enemies and that I should destroy you, but I would fight fate itself if it means we can both live happily.” “I would rather risk letting the world be destroyed than kill you.”

Kamen Rider Drive

This one isn’t the high up on the rec list despite being the first one to inspire Cloud and Murasaki because I haven’t actually seen most of it. I saw like 5 or so episodes towards the end plus some of the post-canon content and got obsessed with two of the side characters (one of which I would say is canonically gay for the other one in the post-canon audio drama, unless you can think of a way that saying “I can’t deny that one of my hidden desires is to go on a date with him, even though he’s a boy” is platonic)

Additionally, the main character has a guy who really wants to fight him and the lesser villain trio has weird tensions of the girl and guy both really wanting their leader’s attention and being jealous over each other.

This one is about a police officer in a ‘special investigations unit’ that deals with weird going-ons with this robot race that slows down time and is trying to take over humanity or something like that

Kamen Rider Revice

I also haven’t seen this one but I know people who have (with mixed opinions on the show). The writer of this show originally wanted to make the main Rider a woman but the company shut him down. However, that does mean that this show has a major female character with her own character arc and homoerotic rival (and from what I hear, she is the best part of this show). This is currently airing though it’s almost over

It’s about a family who runs a bath house and fights using their inner demons (and fights against their inner demons sometimes). I’ve only seen a couple bits and pieces of this but the parents of this family are wholesome heterosexuals and the sister definitely seemed like she was trying to go on a date with her rival-turned-ally.

I also haven’t seen this, but I know at least three people whose taste in media I trust who love this. I’m reccing this one because it’s also based in Japanese fairytales, specifically centered around Momotaro. Characters include guy who was found in a peach and is unable to lie and has a homoerotic rivalry/secret identity thing with a villain where they’re friends out of their suits and enemies in their suits; teenage manga artist accused of plagerism; wife guy; wanted fugitive; and anti-money poet

Every time I hear about this show I wonder how on earth they can pack so much into one 20 minute episode. This one is also still airing
