There's PayPal.me/ekymutualaid, Venmo - @ekymutualaid, or Cashapp - $ekymutualaid. There's also a Facebook group where individuals are posting requests for aid.
There's a fund for relief in Erwin, Tennessee
Helbender Harm Reduction is collecting physical supplies in Knoxville alongside First Aid Collective Knoxille, whose Cashapp/Venmo is: $firstaidcollectknox. If you're nearby they're looking for clothes, blankets, shelf stable food, rain gear, flashlights, and batteries, which is what most other groups asking for supplies are looking at too.
The TriCities Mutual Aid group is mostly asking for volunteers and supplies in the Tennessee/Virginia area. However, they may shift to donations, and you can reach out to them to see if they would be welcome either way.

A list of Mutual Aid groups can be found here
A friend of mine, Vyn, is asking for help since he'll be out of power for around a week in Southeast GA
Other physical supplies people will be looking for in flood impacted areas include:
bottled water, potentially water filters
personal hygiene items: wipes, camping showers, tampons/pads/other menstrual products, handsanitizer, mosquito spray, laundry detergent, washboards, toilet paper, diapers, and especially any products safe for sensitive skin
medications- ibuprofen, monistat and other meds for yeast infections, cold and cough meds, any diabetic meds that can be safely shared, etc
individually wrapped low or no prep food items, baby formula, and Gatorade
duffel bags, backpacks, heavy duty storage totes and trash bags, 5 gallon buckets, coolers
Fans, dehumidifiers, moisture sensors, generators, gas and gas cans, solar charging items and battery banks, first aid kits
chainsaws, crowbars, hammers, air filters, respirators, 2×4 planks, bleach, roofing nails, heavy duty gloves, and potentially waders.
and board games or other non electric activities for children
Double check if you can before you donate these items to make sure whatever local drive you're headed to wants them and can distribute the more specialized ones where they're needed
And please! Add any funds you know of, especially for South Carolina and North Georgia since I wasn't seeing many funds for those areas! I know South Carolina is in desperate need and there's definitely parts of North Georgia in need too. Atlanta saw some bad flooding so keep an eye for them too!

I always have thoughts (I can't be asked to rename this- Rigged traps and etc thinking)
We discuss Amanda rigging her traps so much and it has to be one of the most depressing aspects of her character. It’s somewhat obvious that she doesn’t actually think she should’ve survived her own test, which is why she doesn’t believe that anyone else should either- Amongst other factors.
Tumblr media
I sometimes wonder whether she’d come to this conclusion without having to go through as much as she did. For example, if Gabriela hadn’t died and let’s say Cecilia did? If Adam somehow escaped… Or was Amanda always destined to doubt John’s ideology and be doomed. The reason she stuck around was because of him really, not anything to do with the ‘’rehabilitation’’ of others. She always tends to react negatively in the face of any game too. With Saw X I think we literally get to watch any hope Amanda has for John’s methods be crushed. I always get confused with the timeline but with a quick search this movie falls between the first Saw movie and Saw 2… Anyway the bathroom trap, Amanda is quite removed from the game itself, even though she is slightly one of the reasons Adam fails with how carelessly she throws the key. The most hands on Amanda gets in regards to this test is when she brings Adam to the bathroom and then also when she returns to suffocate him.
Tumblr media
But if we look at the traps for the scammers? Amanda plays a very active role in their test throughout the entire process. She not only brings them to the location, but she interacts with them whilst they’re playing their game. Amanda seems to be rooting for Gabriela, being quite empathetic to the younger woman’s struggle with addiction…. And in a sense, Cecilia is Gabriela’s John? Because to me both Cecilia and John are kinda predatory, just in different ways.
Tumblr media
John knew of Amanda from the fact she was a patient in the Homeward Bound Clinic, testing her in her own words because she was a ‘’fucking junkie.’’ So he puts this clearly mentally unstable woman in a reverse bear trap and when she survives the ordeal, John proceeds to use her misplaced gratitude to recruit her. However, I do think there is genuine care between them, it’s just a shame the one person Amanda latches on to is JIGSAW. Whereas with Cecilia, she targets Gabriela because it’s easy to hire an employee whose main focus and drive is money. You can say that’s most workers and sure it is! But addiction can blur and shift your morals by a lot. The same way that Amanda got Cecil to attempt to rob the clinic, I don’t believe Gabriela is focused on the good and bad of what she’s doing. She is purely focused on funding her drugs, making her very easy to be taken advantage of. This could have been Amanda in another life.
Tumblr media
Back on track though- Another little detail that always makes me sigh is the fact that Amanda likely was the one to put Valentina’s hair up for her. It’s such a simple consideration and that is what makes it all the more saddening to me. She then watches with her own two eyes, almost every single one of their deaths… EXCEPT CECILIA WHO SURVIVES AND IS THE REASON GABRIELA DIED. Shit man. I’d crash out too. Like, what do you mean the person behind the scam in the first place and who has just stomped on another human being's neck like she’s killing a bug is the person who wins this? What because she did it in the time frame? Because she physically overpowered the other person within her test and KILLED him. That’s who we’re letting out??? Gabriela won but died and even someone like Valentina actually was successful in cutting off her own leg, she just didn’t have enough time. Oh! Did I mention this happens in Saw 2… Like so much of this is a repeat. Xavier physically overpowers almost everyone else in that group, throwing Amanda into a needle pit and killing Jonas. Laura did about nothing wrong except shoplifting and having Eric frame her, yet she succumbs to the poison and dies in Amanda’s arms. Oh! AND SOMEHOW THERE IS A MINOR IN BOTH OF THESE GAMES, DANIEL IS JUST A FUCKING TEENAGER AND CARLOS IS A CHILD!!! DID I MENTION WE HAVE SEX WORKERS HERE TOO? BYE VALENTINA. BYE ADDISON. Oh and people being forced into traps not intended for them. Amanda was never meant to go in the needle pit and a whole CHILD shouldn't be BLOODBOARDED.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of this is so close together timeline wise too. Amanda is catching no breaks and that’s why it’s not surprising given these circumstances that she’d become unhinged and start actually just murdering people. Might as well everyone else seems to be doing it and getting far. But, let's say things were different as mentioned. Gabriela survived… Laura survived… Adam survived…. So on so forth. Would she have her existential crisis crash out? Because her belief nobody changes is partially engraved in her experiences with others but also based upon herself. If she was helped the first time, why did she keep getting tested? If not the fact of her drug addiction, what was wrong with her? The fact she still self harmed even after surviving the whole ordeal with the bear trap? AMANDA WHAT YOU COULD’VE BEEN IF YOU LATCHED ON TO JILL INSTEAD.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like I know it's because John's method worked in comparison to the standard rehabilitation but God.

Inside William’s Next Act: Tatler’s May issue goes behind the scenes as the Prince of Wales is rising above the noise — and playing the long game
The burden of leadership is falling upon Prince William, but as former BBC Royal Correspondent, Wesley Kerr OBE, explains in Tatler’s May cover story, the future king is taking charge
By Wesley Kerr OBE
21 March 2024
Tumblr media
When I first met Prince William in 2009, he asked me if I could tell him how he could win the National Lottery.
It was a jokey quip from someone who has since become the Prince of Wales, the holder of three dukedoms, three earldoms, two baronies and two knighthoods, and heir to the most prestigious throne on earth.
He was, of course, being relatable; I was representing the organisation that had allocated Lottery funding towards the Whitechapel Gallery and he wanted to put me at ease.
William is grand but different, royal but real.
At 6ft 3in, he has the bearing and looks great in uniform after a distinguished, gallant military career.
He will be one of the tallest of Britain’s kings since Edward Longshanks in the 14th century and should one day be crowned sitting above the Stone of Scone that Edward ‘borrowed.’
William, by contrast, has a deep affinity with Scotland and Wales, having lived in both nations and gained solace from the Scottish landscape after his mother died.
He’s popular in America and understands that the Crown’s relationship to the Commonwealth must evolve.
The Prince of Wales has long believed that ‘the Royal Family has to modernise and develop as it goes along, and it has to stay relevant’, as he once said in an interview.
He seeks his own way of being relatable, of benefitting everybody, in the context of an ancient institution undergoing significant challenge and upheaval, as the head of a nation divided by hard times, conflicts abroad, and social and political uncertainty.
We might recognise Shakespeare’s powerful line spoken by Claudius in Hamlet: ‘When sorrows come, they come not single spies, but in battalions.’
With the triple announcement in January and February of the Princess of Wales’s abdominal surgery and long convalescence, of King Charles’s prostate procedure and then of his cancer diagnosis, the burden of leadership has fallen on 76-year-old Queen Camilla and, crucially, on William.
Tumblr media
The Prince of Wales’s time has come to step up; and so he has deftly done.
In recent months, we have seen a fully-fledged deputy head of state putting into practice his long-held ideas, speaking out on the most contentious issue of the day and taking direct action on homelessness.
Last June, he unveiled the multi-agency Homewards initiative with the huge aspiration of ending homelessness, backed with £3 million from his Foundation to spearhead action across the UK.
He is consolidating Heads Together, the long-standing campaign on mental health, and fundraises for charities like London’s Air Ambulance Charity.
He was, of course, once a pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance services – a profession that had its downside: seeing people in extremis or at death’s door, he found himself ‘taking home people’s trauma, people’s sadness.’
Tom Cruise was a guest at the recent London’s Air Ambulance Charity fundraiser, William’s first gala event after Kate’s operation.
And more stardust followed when William showed that, even without his wife by his side, he could outclass any movie star at the Baftas.
There’s also his immense aim of helping to ‘repair the planet’ itself with his Earthshot Prize: five annual awards of £1 million for transformative environmental projects with worldwide application.
This project has a laser focus on biodiversity, better air quality, cleaner seas, reducing waste and combating climate change. Similar aims to his father; different means to achieve the goal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the issue which has caused huge convulsions – the Middle East conflict – William’s 20 February statement from Kensington Palace grabbed attention.
He said he was ‘deeply concerned about the terrible human cost of the conflict since the Hamas terrorist attack on 7 October. Too many have been killed.’
There were criticisms – along the lines of ‘the late Queen would have never spoken out like this’ or ‘what right does he have to meddle in politics?’ – but it was hard to disagree with his carefully calibrated words.
His call for peace, the ‘desperate need’ for humanitarian aid, the return of the hostages.
The statement was approved by His Majesty’s Government, likely cleared with the King himself at Sandringham the previous weekend and also backed by the chief rabbi of Great Britain, Sir Ephraim Mirvis.
Indeed, William and Catherine had immediately spoken out on the horrors of 7 October.
William followed up the week after his Kensington Palace statement by visiting a synagogue and sending a ‘powerful message’, according to the chief rabbi, by meeting a Holocaust survivor and condemning anti-Semitism.
This is rooted in deep personal conviction following William’s 2018 visit to Israel and the West Bank, says Valentine Low, the distinguished author of Courtiers and The Times’s royal correspondent of 15 years, who was on that 2018 trip.
‘William was so moved by his visit to Israel and the West Bank, he found it very affecting, and he was not going to drop this issue – he was going to pay attention to it for the rest of his life,’ says Low.
‘He must feel that… not to say something on the most important issue in the world [at that moment] would be a bit odd if you feel so strongly about it.’
Tumblr media
There was concern from some commentators about politicising the monarchy, but this rose above the particulars of party politics.
As Prince of Wales, like his father before him, there is perhaps space to speak out sparingly on carefully chosen issues.
On this occasion, his views were in line with majority public opinion.
On homelessness, news came that same week that William was planning to build 24 homes for the homeless on his Duchy of Cornwall estate.
‘William’s impact is very personal,’ says Mick Clarke, chief executive of The Passage, a charity providing emergency accommodation for London’s homeless.
‘Two weeks before Christmas, the prince came to our Resource Centre in Victoria for a Christmas lunch for 150 people.
He was scheduled to stay for an hour, to help serve, wash up, and talk to people.
He ended up staying for two and a quarter hours, during which time he went from table to table and spoke to every single person.’
Clarke continues:
‘William has an ability to listen, talk and to put people at ease. During the November 2020 lockdown, he came on three separate occasions to help.
It gave the team a boost that he took the time; it was his way of saying: “I support you; you’re doing a great job.”’
Seyi Obakin, chief executive of Centrepoint, one of the prince’s best-known causes, adds:
‘People associate his patronage with the big moments like the time he and I slept under Blackfriars Bridge.
The things that stick with me are smaller in scale and the more profound for it – in quieter moments, away from the cameras, where he has volunteered his time.’
It is a different approach from the King’s.
As Prince of Wales, he was involved in the minutiae of dozens of issues at any one time, working into the night to follow up on emails, crafting his speeches, writing or dictating notes.
Add to that much nationwide touring over 40 years (after he left active military service in 1976), fitting in multiple engagements, often being greeted formally by lord lieutenants.
This is not William’s style. He has commended his father’s model, but he does things his own way.
Although patronages are under review, William has up till now far fewer than either his father or his grandparents.
Tumblr media
Charles is sympathetic to William’s approach and his desire to make time with his young family sacrosanct.
They are confidantes, attested by the night of Queen Elizabeth’s death.
They were both at Birkhall with Camilla, reviewing funeral arrangements while the rest of the grieving family were nearby at Balmoral, hosted by the Princess Royal.
Charles has had almost six decades in public life and is the senior statesman of our time, with even longer in the spotlight than Joe Biden.
After Eton and St Andrew’s University, where he met Catherine, William served in three branches of the military between 2006 and 2013, finishing as a seasoned and skilled helicopter rescue pilot.
His later employment as an air ambulance pilot stopped in 2017, when he became a full-time working royal.
At that time, not so long ago – with Harry unmarried, Andrew undisgraced, and Philip and Elizabeth still active – William shared the spotlight.
Now, after the King, he’s the key man.
He can look back on the success of his first big campaign initially launched with his wife and brother in 2016: Heads Together.
‘We are delighted that Prince William should have become such a positive and sympathetic advocate for mental health through his Heads Together initiative and now well-established text service, Shout, among other projects,’ says the longtime CEO and founder of Sane, the remarkable Marjorie Wallace CBE.
‘It is not always known that he follows in the footsteps of his father, the King, whose inspiration and vision were vital in the creation of our mental health charity Sane.
As founding patron, he was instrumental in establishing our 365-days-a-year helpline and was a remarkable and selfless support to me in setting up the Prince of Wales International Centre for Sane Research.’
'Indeed,' says Wallace, 'this is where Prince William echoes the work of his father, showing the same ‘understanding and compassion for people struggling through dark and difficult times of their lives and has done much to raise awareness and encourage those affected to speak out and seek help.
We owe a huge debt to His Majesty and the Prince of Wales for their involvement in this still-neglected area.’
Just as I saw all those years ago at that early solo engagement in Whitechapel, William still approaches his public duties with humour and fun.
‘He defuses the formality with jocularity,’ says Valentine Low, citing two public events in 2023 that he witnessed.
In April last year, while on a visit to Birmingham, William randomly answered the phone in an Indian restaurant he was being shown around and took a table booking from a customer – an endearing act of spontaneity.
On his arrival later that day, the unsuspecting diner was surprised to be told exactly whom he had been talking to.
Tumblr media
In October, Low reported, William ‘unleashed his inner flirt as he hugged his way through a visit with Caribbean elders [in Cardiff] to mark Black History Month.
As he gave one woman a hug – for longer than she expected – he joked: “I draw the line at kissing.”
And while posing for a group photograph, he prompted gales of laughter when he quipped: “Who is pinching my bottom?”’
Low believes that when William eventually becomes king, he will be more ‘radical’ than his father but wonders if people will respond to ‘call me William’ when ‘the whole point of the Royal Family is mystique and being different.’
However, William has thought deeply about his current role and is prepared for whatever his future holds.
For now, there is a decision to be made on Prince George’s secondary schooling. It’s said that five public schools are being considered, all fee-paying.
Eton is single-sex and boarding but close to home. Marlborough (Catherine’s alma mater) is co-ed and full boarding. And Oundle, St Edward’s Oxford and Bradfield College (close to Kate’s parents) are co-ed with a mix of boarding and day.
As parents, William and Catherine aspire to raise their children ‘as good people with the idea of service and duty to others as very important’, William said in an interview with the BBC in 2016.
‘Within our family unit, we are a normal family.’ Which may be one reason why he is so resistant to their privacy being compromised either by the media or close family members.
Tumblr media
The 19th-century author Walter Bagehot wrote:
‘A family on the throne is an interesting idea also. It brings down the pride of sovereignty to the level of petty life… a princely marriage is the brilliant edition of a universal fact, and, as such, it rivets mankind.’
If hereditary monarchy is to survive, it must beguile us but also demonstrate its utility, that it is a force for good.
William said in that 2016 interview, ‘I’m going to get plenty of criticism over my lifetime,’ echoing Queen Elizabeth II’s famous Guildhall speech in 1992 ‘that criticism is good for people and institutions that are part of public life. No institution – city, monarchy, whatever – should expect to be free from the scrutiny of those who give it their loyalty and support, not to mention those who don’t.’
William saw close up his mother’s ability to bring public focus and her own personal magnetism to any subject or cause she focused on.
He admires his father’s work ethic, the way he ‘really digs down,’ sometimes literally (I understand that gardening is giving the King solace during his cancer treatment).
But the biggest influence for William was Her late Majesty, as he said on her 90th birthday.
As an Eton schoolboy, William made weekend visits to the big house on the hill, being mentored by Granny rather as she had been tutored in the Second World War by the then vice-provost of Eton, Sir Henry Marten.
William said in 2016:
‘In the Queen, I have an extraordinary example of somebody who’s done an enormous amount of good and she’s probably the best role model I could have.’
That said, his aim was ‘finding your own path but with very good examples and guidance around you to support you.'
Tumblr media
Queen Elizabeth II had a brilliant way of rising above the fray and usually being either a step ahead of public opinion or in tune with it.
If you are at the helm of affairs in a privileged hereditary position, your duty is to serve and use your pulpit for the benefit of others.
In a democracy, monarchy is accountable.
The scrutiny is intense, with an army of commentators paid for wisdom and hot air about each no-show, parsing each announcement, interpreting each image.
William takes the long view. He has ‘wide horizons,’ says Mick Clarke.
‘There are so many causes that are more palatable and easier to achieve than ending homelessness, but his commitment and drive are 100 per cent.’
The prince seeks a different way of being royal in an ancient institution that must move with the times. His task? To develop something modern in an ever-changing world.
He faces all sorts of new issues – or old issues in new guises.
Noises off from within the family don’t help – Andrew’s difficulties, or the suggestions of prejudice from Montecito a couple of years ago (now seemingly withdrawn), which prompted William’s most vehement soundbite: ‘We’re very much not a racist family.’
William is maybe a new kind of leader who can keep the monarchy relevant and resonant in the coming decades.
Queen Elizabeth II is a powerful exemplar and memory, but she was of her time. William is his own man.
He must overcome and think beyond ‘the unforgiving minute.’
Indeed, he could seek inspiration in Rudyard Kipling’s poem, If.
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch[…]
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

Paul Frederic Simon (born October 13, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter known for his solo work and his collaborations with Art Garfunkel. He and his school friend Garfunkel, whom he met in 1953, came to prominence in the 1960s as Simon & Garfunkel. Their blend of folk and rock, including hits such as "The Sound of Silence", "Mrs. Robinson", "America" and "The Boxer", served as a soundtrack to the counterculture movement. Their final album, Bridge Over Troubled Water (1970), is among the bestselling of all time.
As a solo artist, Simon has explored genres including gospel, reggae and soul. His albums Paul Simon (1972), There Goes Rhymin' Simon (1973), and Still Crazy After All These Years (1975) kept him in the public eye and drew acclaim, producing the hits "Mother and Child Reunion", "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard", and "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover". Simon reunited with Garfunkel for several tours and the 1981 Concert in Central Park.
In 1986, Simon released his most successful and acclaimed album, Graceland, incorporating South African influences. "You Can Call Me Al" became one of Simon's most successful singles. Graceland was followed by The Rhythm of the Saints (1990), and a second Concert in the Park in 1991, without Garfunkel, which was attended by half a million people. In 1998, Simon wrote a Broadway musical, The Capeman, which was poorly received. In the 21st century, Simon continued to record and tour. His later albums, such as You're the One (2000), So Beautiful or So What (2011) and Stranger to Stranger (2016), introduced him to new generations. Simon retired from touring in 2018, but continued to record music. An album, Seven Psalms, was released in May 2023.
Simon is among the world's best-selling music artists. He has twice been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and has been the recipient of sixteen Grammy Awards, including three for Album of the Year. Two of his works, Sounds of Silence and Graceland, were inducted into the National Recording Registry for their cultural significance, and in 2007, the Library of Congress voted him the inaugural winner of the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. He is a co-founder of the Children's Health Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides medical care to children.
In 2012, in an interview reprinted in American Songwriter, Simon discussed the craft of songwriting with music journalist Tom Moon and talked about the basic themes in his songwriting: love, family and social commentary, as well as messages of religion, spirituality and God. Simon explained how he wrote his songs. "The music always precedes the words. The words often come from the sound of the music and eventually evolve into coherent thoughts. Or incoherent thoughts. Rhythm plays a crucial part in the lyric-making as well. It's like a puzzle to find the right words to express what the music is saying."
When Simon moved to England in 1964, he met Kathleen Mary "Kathy" Chitty at the first English folk club he played, the Railway Inn Folk Club in Brentwood, Essex, where Chitty worked part-time selling tickets. She was 16 and he was 22 when they began a relationship. Later that year they visited the U.S. together, mainly touring by bus. Kathy returned to England and Simon followed some weeks later. When he returned to the U.S. with the growing success of "The Sounds of Silence", Kathy, who was quite shy, wanted no part in success and fame and they ended their relationship. She is mentioned by name in at least two of Simon's songs: "Kathy's Song" and "America". She is also referred to in "Homeward Bound" and "The Late Great Johnny Ace". There is a photo of Simon and Kathy together on the cover of Simon's 1965 album The Paul Simon Songbook.
Simon has been married three times, first to Peggy Harper in 1969. They had a son, Harper Simon, in 1972, and divorced in 1975, inspiring the song "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover". Simon wrote about this relationship in the song "Train in the Distance" from his 1983 album Hearts and Bones. In the late 1970s, Simon lived in New York City next door to Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, who has been described as Simon's "best friend" during the period.
He and Shelley Duvall lived together as a couple for two years until she introduced him to her friend Carrie Fisher. Simon and Fisher became a couple, and his second marriage, from 1983 to 1984, was to Fisher. He proposed to her after a New York Yankees game. The song "Hearts and Bones" was written about their time together, and the song "Graceland" is believed to be about seeking solace from the ending of the relationship by taking a road trip. A year after they divorced, Simon and Fisher resumed their relationship, which lasted for several years.
Simon married singer Edie Brickell on May 30, 1992. Brickell and Simon have three children, Adrian, Lulu, and Gabriel. On April 26, 2014, Simon and Brickell were involved in a domestic dispute. Each was issued a summons to appear in court on disorderly conduct charges.
All four of his children are now adults and are musicians.
Simon and his younger brother, Eddie Simon, founded the Guitar Study Center sometime before 1973. The Guitar Study Center became part of The New School in New York City, sometime before 2002.
Simon is an avid fan of the New York Rangers ice hockey team, the New York Knicks basketball team and the New York Yankees baseball team.

The Death of Cleopatra and its Ancient Origins
Tumblr media
By Adalbert von Roessler - http://www.duesseldorfer-auktionshaus.de/de/katalog/view/01_2013/600, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=26512773
Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65-8 BCE), better known as Horace, was a Roman poet who lived during the reign of Augustus, also known as Octavian (Gaius Julius Ceasar Agustus). He lived during the change in Rome from republic to empire as well as the death of Cleopatra in 300 BCE. His writing style relied on the ancient, even to him, Greek poets who lived during the Archaic period of Greek history, while using his writing to both mock and place blame on those in power and to praise and entertain. This alacrity with tone and duality made him popular among many Romantic poets, inspiring many of them to write their own works, such as Andrew Marvell's Horatian Ode upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland, which takes its cues from The Death of Cleopatra as it reflects on the death of Charles I.

Cleopatra was the last active ruler of Egypt, the only of the Ptolomic dynasty to bother learning the Egyptian language, among others, well read and highly intelligent, as well as a consummate states person caught in the fallout of her Father's (Ptolemy XII Auletes) fleeing from Egypt to Rome after a revolt by her sister Bernice IV. She started her reign with her sister and brother (Ptolemy XIII), but the trouble between them led to a civil war. During this time, Pompey (Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus), Roman general and statesman, fled to Egypt after a battle against Julius Caesar. Ptolemy XIII, at the advice of his eunuchs, ambushed and killed Pompey, which brought the wrath of Caesar. Caesar tried to fix the problem between the three rulers, but Potheinos, the chief eunuch advisor, mistrusted Caesar, thinking he favored Cleopatra, sent forces to besiege her and Caesar. After the siege was broken and another battle, Caesar set up Cleopatra and Ptolemy XIV as rulers. She maintained an affair with Caesar then after his assassination and assassinated Ptolemy XIV soon after. She then sided with Mark Antony and Marcus Aemeilius Lepidus in the power vacuum left behind, and embarked on an affair with Mark Antony while funding and supporting his military campaigns. When Mark Antony took Cleopatra as his wife and divorced his wife Octavia Minor, he lost the support of the Roman Senate, leading to the declaration of war against Cleopatra. Not wanting to go into exile to Rome as a treasure, a prisoner in a Roman triumphal procession, she poisoned herself rather than allow that.

Despite this, or perhaps because of this, his poem The Death of Cleopatra is ambiguous about the ruler. While he calls for revelry, 'Now let us drink; with nimble feet/Now let us strike the holy ground;', he also laments and praises her 'But Egypt knows her dream a cheat/Begot with Mareotic [referring to Lake Mariout in Northern Egypt] fumes…She homeward steers, resolved to die/preferring death to slavery/Or exile from her own domains.'
You can read the whole poem here.

William Balfour Baikie, the Scottish explorer and missionary, passed away on December 12th 1864 in Sierra Leone.
Baikie studied medicine at Edinburgh University, and after graduating he was an assistant surgeon on a number of Royal Navy ships. He was then moved to a naval hospital in Gosport, where he learnt of an exploration being funded by the merchant Macgregor Laird. The aim was to explore the River Niger and one of its’ tributaries, the Benue, for as far as possible.
He joined an expedition in Sierra Leone in 1854 but upon arrival, it was discovered that the man in charge of the expedition, had died. As the second most senior member of there he took charge, feeling that it would be wasteful to discontinue the trip.
The expedition journeyed 250 miles further along the Benue than any other Europeans had done before. Baikie managed to navigate and record data for over 700 miles of river. Following the success for the first trip, Baikie led a second expedition in 1857, aiming to make further contact with the native people, and to establish trading posts. Unfortunately, the boat on which Baikie travelled, the “Dayspring”, hit hidden rocks. Baikie and his crew were stranded for a year before being rescued.
He also undertook many journeys over land, to see and learn of the land beyond the river banks. Once, he travelled over 600 miles on horseback to the Kano, one of the main towns of northern Nigeria. He made a powerful impact by practising medicine, organising road building and creating a market to trade goods on the river for the first time.
After deciding to return home in 1864, the HMS Investigator took Baikie back to Sierra Leone. He decided to stay there for a short while before continuing his homeward journey, so that he could properly sort out his manuscripts and specimen collections.
Sadly, he was struck by a deadly fever and died on the 12th of December, 1864 aged just 40. He was not only greatly respected among his contemporaries, for whom he did much, but also among the tribes he encountered. One local dialect of Nigeria uses the word “beke”, a corruption of Baikie, as the word for “white man”.

Hopefully one of you can help because I’m still a bit stuck on what Homewards is. Home is important, got that. We can end homelessness. Bit overly ambitious but I admire his optimism. Royal Foundation is funding some localities, great. But what does it actually do? How does the money end homelessness? Have they said?

Is Prince William’s Philanthropy Driven by Legacy Building Rather than Real Impact?
Prince William has recently taken on high-profile philanthropic ventures, including the Earthshot Prize, aimed at global environmental sustainability; the Homewards initiative, which seeks to end homelessness in the UK; and his conservation efforts, especially focused on African wildlife preservation. These campaigns are well-funded and carry a certain level of prestige due to his royal status.…

i’m so beyond disgusted by the amount of folks i’ve seen using hurricane helene and the destruction in appalachia as a kind of political gotcha or some shit and it’s from both sides too. Like i’ve been seeing leftists talk about the amount of death and destruction here as if it’s our fault, either by folks here not evacuating or because we’re red states. And i’ve seen republicans fucking actually believing that “they control the weather” bullshit or saying that this was an attack. And I’ve seen them both try to use this as a “THIS IS WHY YOU HAVE TO VOTE FOR BLUE/RED” like y’all people are fucking dead and dying. Whole towns are destroyed. And i’m sure more stores like that one fucking ingles in black mountain are gonna be using this as an excuse to create more of a shortage and jack up prices. idk i’m tired of disasters being used as gotchas and im really tired of blue state leftists blaming us for the disasters that happen

You’ll need to show that you can use your education and experiences to impact your community positively.
Required Documents for the Chevening Scholarship Application
The Chevening application process is detailed and requires submitting specific documents that showcase your qualifications. Here’s a checklist of what you need: - University Transcripts: Copies of your academic transcripts. - Degree Certificates: Proof of your previous academic qualifications. - Work Experience: A detailed summary of your work experience. - References: You’ll need two reference letters, ideally from professional or academic supervisors. - English Language Proficiency: Proof of English proficiency is essential for Chevening applications. You can submit scores from recognized exams like IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE Academic, or demonstrate English language competency through other qualifications.
How to Apply for the Chevening Scholarship
Now that you know you’re eligible, let’s go through the Chevening application process step by step: 1. Research and Choose a Course Begin by choosing a UK master’s program that aligns with your career aspirations. Chevening allows applicants to apply for three different courses at the same university or at different universities. It’s crucial to select courses that will help you make the most significant impact when you return to Nigeria. 2. Prepare Your Essays The heart of the Chevening application lies in the four essay questions you’ll be required to answer. These questions focus on: - Leadership and Influence: Show how you’ve demonstrated leadership in your work, academics, or personal life. - Networking Skills: How do you network with people, and how will this skill help you in the future? - Your Career Plan: Outline your short- and long-term career goals and how a master’s degree will help you achieve them. - Why the UK?: Explain why studying in the UK is vital for your growth and how it will contribute to your country's development. Pro Tip: Use personal examples in your essays to stand out. The selection panel wants to hear your story—don’t be afraid to show your passion and unique journey. 3. Submit Your Application Online Visit the Chevening application website and complete your application. Remember to: - Double-check all your documents for accuracy. - Make sure your essays reflect your best work and are free of grammatical errors. - Submit your application before the deadline. 4. Attend an Interview If you’re shortlisted, you’ll be invited to an interview at the British High Commission in Abuja or Lagos. Interviews are typically conducted between February and April. During the interview, you’ll be asked about your academic and professional background, leadership experience, and career goals. 5. Await the Results After the interview, you’ll be notified whether you’ve been selected for the scholarship. Keep in mind that competition is fierce, but if you’ve followed these steps and presented your best self, you’ll be well-positioned to secure the award.
How to Make Your Application Stand Out
With thousands of applications submitted every year, you might wonder how to make your application stand out. Here are some tips based on insights from successful Chevening Scholars: - Show Leadership Skills: Chevening is about fostering leadership potential. Be sure to demonstrate instances where you’ve taken the lead in your workplace, community, or any other setting. - Clarity of Purpose: Clearly outline your career plan and how studying in the UK will help you achieve it. Show the selection committee how you intend to use the knowledge and experience gained to make a difference in Nigeria. - Be Genuine: Authenticity is key. Don’t just tell the selection committee what you think they want to hear. Be honest about your journey, challenges, and aspirations. - Strong References: Choose people who know your work ethic, values, and leadership potential to write your letters of recommendation. References from supervisors or mentors who can attest to your growth and impact are particularly powerful.
Application Deadlines
The Chevening Scholarship cycle typically follows the academic calendar, with applications opening in August and closing in early November. It’s essential to start your preparation early, gather all necessary documents, and submit your application well before the deadline. Missing the deadline means waiting an entire year to apply again.

But before you pack your bags and dream of exploring glaciers and historic sites, there's one crucial step: securing a visitor visa. This guide will be your compass, navigating you through the essential documents required for Canada tourist visa application.
Passport Power:
Your passport is your key to unlocking the Canadian border. Ensure it has at least six months of validity beyond your intended stay and is in pristine condition. No ripped passports or last-minute renewals here!

Canadian immigration wants to know you can support yourself during your visit. Gather documents like bank statements or employment letters showcasing sufficient funds for your trip. If someone's sponsoring your adventure, a letter outlining their financial commitment strengthens your application.

Homeward Bound:
Canadian authorities want to be assured you'll return home after your visit. Documents like an employment letter confirming a return to work or proof of property ownership in your home country demonstrate strong ties that pull you back.

4 Luv of Dog Rescue: Over 6500 Dogs Saved
One of the best things you can do to stage your home begins with your landscaping. It's because it's the first thing people see when they approach your home. Trees and plants can make your home appear larger, cleaner, and provide a nice welcoming environment. If you must remove a tree, be sure you do so responsibly. The best thing to do is a call a professional like the ones at Pensacola Tree Services An Organization Passionate About Rescuing and Rehoming Dogs By the Numbers 6,500 dogs saved as of 2022 Over 300 volunteers 4 Luv of Dog 4 Luv of Dog Rescue, based in Fargo, ND, is a remarkable example of community-driven efforts in animal welfare. Established in 2005, this entirely volunteer-run non-profit organization is dedicated to the cause of rescuing and rehoming dogs. The organization primarily serves the upper Midwest. The Rescue receives no government funding and relies entirely on grants, fundraising, and generous donations from the community to provide care for all of the dogs in its rescue. A volunteer-run organization devoted to rescuing and rehoming dogs, 4 Luv of Dog Rescue does not discriminate against breed, age, or disability. “We are nothing without our community,” Fundraising Coordinator Savanna Leach said. A unique aspect of 4 Luv of Dog Rescue is its operational model. Unlike many animal shelters, it does not maintain a traditional shelter facility. Instead, it operates on a foster-based system, with dogs being cared for in foster homes or at local boarding facilities. This approach not only provides a more home-like environment for the dogs but also helps in better assessing their behavior and needs in a family setting. This system is complemented by a facility in Moorhead, MN, which is used for emergency-only housing for dogs until a faster home becomes available. Inside the foster-based mission of Fargo’s 4 Luv of Dog Rescue Potential adopters can meet dogs either by becoming approved to adopt or by attending an organization-hosted event. This process ensures that the dogs are placed in homes that are best suited for their individual needs. Most of the dogs are in foster homes, and the organization respects the time and commitment of its foster volunteers by arranging meetings with approved adopters only. The Future “We would love to build our own space,” Leach said. “We currently lease, and we lease on a very small piece of property. Our own space would ensure longevity in the community, as well as the space to house more animals, and have more room for in-house activities that we would otherwise pay for—this includes grooming, training, boarding, etc. It is a very large dream, but we would love to see it happen.” How to Get Involved Foster Adopt Volunteer Support 4 Luv of Dog 4luvofdog.org Facebook | /4LuvOfDogRescue Instagram | @4luvofdogrescue 4 Luv of Dog Rescue’s Recommended Nonprofits Minn-Kota PAAWS This organization offers low-cost spay/neutering, vaccinations, etc. minnkotapaaws.org Cats Cradle Cats Cradle rescues, cares for, protects, and places cats for adoption in loving lifelong homes.
