Review of United Shades of America: Reflections on Race, Gentrification, and Identity
W. Kamau Bell’s United Shades of America feels like one of those rare shows that doesn’t just scratch the surface of difficult conversations but digs deep into the messiness of what it means to live in the U.S., especially if you’re marginalized. What strikes me about Bell as a host is how he genuinely relates to people. He’s not just another journalist asking questions. You can see he’s putting…

So. We’ve seen Desmond going back in time and becoming a doctor in Altaïr’s time and Ezio’s time, but I’ve never seen Desmond becoming a doctor in Ratonhnhaké:ton’s time. Any ideas?
The first thing I thought about is Desmond going to the homestead and just staying there as a doctor but that would be taking Dr White’s place and Ratonhnhaké:ton would never turn him away when he clearly needed help.
The next idea that I thought of is that Desmond just kicked the door open to the manor, told Achilles that he was Altaïr’s descendant and that he’s trying to hide from people out for his blood so he’s gonna stay there. Achilles tries to shoo him away, Ratonhnhaké:ton thinks he’s telling the truth (Desmond didn’t say that the people out for his blood was far into the distant future but he didn’t lie) so he’s supportive of Desmond staying in the manor.
That’s how Desmond starts his ‘unofficial’ job as the private physician of Davenport manor.
More often than not, he takes care of any wounds that Ratonhnhaké:ton gets and checks him every time he returned to the manor after his missions. He also visits the dock and check on the crew of the Aquila to ensure no one was on their way to suffering scurvy.
And most importantly, he takes over cooking duties to make sure Achilles eats well and healthy and absolutely not skipping any meals and just drinking tea and eating some biscuits.
He and Dr White form a kind of partnership. Dr White takes care of the residents of the homestead, Desmond takes care of the two men in the manor.
Dr White also shares his medicines and tinctures (although Desmond isn’t really keen on a lot of them) and Desmond teaches him what he knows of.
Where did he get his medical background?
Well…
Let’s just say Desmond really got into House MD and started researching and watching actual medical documentaries and books. He knows a lot about first aid and medical properties of herbs and plants because of the Farm’s education so he’s really a mix-match 21st century survivalist medical know how and ‘all theories but no practice’ medical student rolled up into one molotov cocktail ready to explode.
Dr White finds him fascinating but also knows that there would be doctors who would dismiss Desmond’s practices and maybe even call him a charlatan.
It should be fine if he remains in the homestead.
Because he will remain in the homestead.
Right?
.
Of course not. Desmond leaves the homestead once things really starts moving for the revolution and becomes a field doctor.
And that’s how he got the interest of George Washington.

Dom!Steven and Bimbo!reader headcanons
Tumblr media
Summary: You're a bimbo, but you're not inexperienced. Steven Grant is an obvious sub... right?
Warnings: oh the filthiest smut, vaginal fingering, overstim, kinda mean dom!Steven but not really, squirting, multiple orgasms, reader faints, titty play (if you squint), reader is described as dim, stupid, but she's nice.
Notes: For @cosmicblogs xxx we are hopping on the bimbo reader bandwagon FR!
Tumblr media
So picture this: You're a bimbo girlie. You adore anything pink and sparkly, cute and fluffy, ect. Your nail are always perfectly manicured and your outfits always steal the show. Your ditsy, and sweet, and thoroughly enjoying your date with giftshopist Steven Grant.
This was your 3rd date, or rather the tail end of it. Steven had invited you over, and you, being the innocent, unassuming thing you were, agreed with a smile.
Under no circumstance would you have assumed Steven had less than safe for work intentions. Besides..
He was a sub. It was obvious.
Eventually though, you made your way back to his flat- Steven scratched the back of his head, and flushed a little as you squealed about how "cute" his homestead was.
Steven had worn tight jeans to your date today, he had hoped you might be into how fit they made his ass look- you didn't seem to be noticing much though. Not that you ever did.
He didn't like to admit it, but it was the truth. You were.. a little dim, at best. He still loved you, and wouldn't change you for the world.
Sometimes he wondered if there was anything between your ears, or if your brainspace was totally occupied by pink sparkles and high heels.
An hour or so later, you both were curled up together on the sofa- Steven had turned on some random documentary on thr history channel, and had to keep himself from laughing everytime you expressed geniune awe at things most people learned when they were children.
"You're so smart Steven." You had said, without a hint of irony, when he'd corrected you that WW2 had infact come after WW1.
It made his heart swell, you were so adorably dumb.
It also made his dick twitch, you were amazed by him, willing to offer him endless ego boosts. Something not many people were.
Steven's eyes raked over your body, god you looked delicious.
You wore pink, obviously. But the way that dress hugged your body... Steven felt his dick twitch again, his eyes fixating over your breasts.
He'd bet your nipples were so sensitive, and if he closed his eyes he could almost imagine how they'd taste...
"Steven?"
Your voice broke him out of his dick-brained stupour-
"Yes darlin'?" "You're like, totally out of it. Shall I like, leave? Like, you look totally tired."
Awe. You thought he was tired.
"No no, love, 's alright, c'mere-"
Steven gently tugged you closer to him, now having you laid on your stomach against his chest.
You nestled there comfortably, and hummed as Steven kissed your head.
He looked down, from this angle he could spy just how juicy your bum was.
His hands twitched.
Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
Steven decided to test the waters, just a wee bit.
Slowly, he traversed his hand down your back, smoothing over your dress. You cuddled into him further, and so did Steven go further.
His hand now teased the hem of your dress, before reaching in to gently caress the apex of your thighs.
You moaned softly, stretching upwards like a cat- "Steven, that like, feels good."
He had never heard you so breathless before, "Yeah?" You moaned again, as his hand travelled a little lower to rub the pad of his fingers against your hole.
Your hips jerked, and you buried your face into his chest to hide your embarrassment as Steven's touches became more and more confident.
This wasn't how this was supposed to go! Steven was a sub, surely! Your tiny, bimbo brain couldn't comprehend him taking control over you like this.
He pinched your clit through your panties- no doubt also pink- the texture of which had you keening.
Steven rubbed your little bud between his fingers until you were drooling on his shirt, pleasure rolling through you in hot waves.
You expected him to stop now, flip you over and stuff you with his cock until he came, you were certainly wet enough-
But he didn't. His fingers kept working you until you came, hot white bliss, and then some.
The pressure from his fingers waned, but didn't stop, not even as he shifted, sitting up and pulling you into his lap, where you felt the heat of his cock pressed up beneath you.
He heard you whimper, and he kissed you neck.
His hands just didn't stop though, even as they dextrously moved your panties aside, finally plunging two of his thick fingers deep inside you, they just kept moving.
Stroking you inside in all the right spots, all the right points that made you cry out, legs twitching.
It wasn't long before you felt another shattering orgasm approaching you.
The only sounds to be heard in the flat now, (TV having turned itself off long ago) were your breathless cries, the wet squelching of Steven's hand against your cunt, and his soothing voice whispering into your ear;
"Yeah, 's good yeah? Feels good?" "S-steven-" "Yeah.. I bet it feels so good, dunnit? Hmm? So good you can't even speak, huh? No? It's that good, sweetheart? So good my baby's tiny is just fit to burst, huh? Can't fit nothing else in there?" He tapped your skull with his free hand, "Nothing else but me in there, ain't that right?"
You wanted to protest, a little peeved that he'd just insinuated, accurately, how stupid you were- but no words came you. Only pathetic, drooling moans and whines, both your hands digging into Steven's arm, leaving crescent shaped scars.
It didn't stop, not even as you came for the second, and third time, and even as the fourth built up.
At this point Steven had tugged your dress and bra down under you tits, and with his previously free hand rolled and squeezebox of them, and suckled hard on the other, gently teasing with his teeth.
You were a mess. Your mascara ran streaks down your face, thighs covered in your own juices and hair dishevelled and messy.
Past the point of moaning like you enjoyed it, you just full on cried now, sobbing and babbling whilst staring in awe at Steven's hands.
The electricity of climax was all you felt, and it was constant. So much, too much. It was the only thing you were aware of.
When the fourth and final one peaked, it was different. You threw your head back agaisnt Steven's shoulder, but not so far as to miss the torrent of liquid gushing from your core, twisting hard pleasure through your every vein.
Eventually the pleasure stopped, but you weren't aware of that either, having blacked out in a hazy, cum brained unconsciousness, still twitching ontop of your lover.
Steven finally pulled his hands from you, a little worried that you'd fainted, but he figured you'd come around soon.
He brought his fingers to his mouth and sucked them clean- mmmmmmm, god, he'd have to taste you later. For now though, hed leave you be... you needed some sleep.

Low energy Devotional Acts for when you don’t have a lot of energy (or time, or money, etc.) pt. 8
🌾Demeter🌾
- if able go on a walk and enjoy the outdoors doesn’t have to be anywhere fancy it could literally just be a walk around the block
- if you can’t go on a walk either sit outside for a bit or just open some windows for some fresh air
- play farming simulator (you think I’m joking but I’m not) or watch vids of ppl playing it
- watch documentaries or do a deep dive on farming and all the stuff that goes with it (maybe you’re wanting to know more about tractors, or farming techniques over the years, etc.)
- if able attend a farmer’s market or look into any that are in your area you don’t necessarily need to buy anything you could just go look around (I do that regularly)
- learn about the role of a farmer and what it’s like to be a farmer (I worked on a farm for a bit in high school and while I loved it I couldn’t do it as a living it takes a very special someone to do it) and look up ways you can support them
- learn about the native plants in your area
- watch foraging videos and learn about it (how to safely do it especially, if it’s something you wish to do at some point)
- if able support local farmers by buying their products (I know here in wi it’s not uncommon for farm stands to pop up this time of year and they sell all sorts of stuff for good prices! One in my town sells the best corn and for only $1 a piece which is perfect)
- point out cows, horses, sheep, goats, etc. while going by them in the car
- learn about homesteading and watch videos about it (though I will issue a heads up that some of these folks veer into uh….’crunchy’ beliefs so just be careful I guess)
- look up recipes you’re interested in trying, try to write your own recipe, or cook something using a family recipe/you’d own recipe if able
- enjoy a fruit, vegetable, or grain/bread product! Have some toast with jelly/jam! Have a salad! A fruit cup! The fruit/veggies can be frozen as well. It’s still that fruit/veggie.
- listen to a devotional playlist for Her
- listen to nature soundscapes
🦉Athena🦉
- learn your rights and by the gods I can’t stress this enough (if you rent learn your tenants rights, learn your workers rights, etc.)
- watch a war movie, show, or documentary (plugging Band of Brothers again because there’s some examples of excellent leadership and all that)
- read or listen to an audiobook about war (can be fiction or nonfiction- my personal favorite is Conversations With Major Dick Winters it’s great)
- listen to a devotional playlist for Her
- is there a weapon you’re interested in? Or maybe a style of combat? Or something else pertaining to combat? Read about it! Watch a video about it!
- if able pick up a handicraft of some sort: knitting, crocheting, sewing, etc.)
- if unable to do that watch tutorial videos for it (I can knit but can’t crochet to save my life but I love watching crocheting videos)
- read or listen to an audiobook about literally anything
- if you’re a student, and are able, do some studying
- or just watch documentaries or read articles and such about stuff that interests you
- if able play a strategy game if unable to do so look up videos for techniques for strategy games you like and pick up some new tricks for when you next play!
- if able do a puzzle (can be as simple or complex as you want)
- if able do something like a word search, sudoko, crossword, etc.

Evening Quiet
A Curtis x Honey Drabble.
1.5k What makes a house a home? The people.
Warnings- mention of sexual activity.
Life Is Short So Make It Sweet Masterlist
Tumblr media
Yes you were glad to be home.
Vacationing was always nice, getting away to see someplace new was always exciting. Florida proved to be just what was needed to battle the winter chill with its sandy beaches and endless amounts of sunshine that for you and Curtis seemed a blessing.
After battling the freezing ice and snow of Duluth, Florida’s weather seemed like summertime to the two of you.
There were nights of firepit and beers in the backyard, lazing around on a yacht that Frank was currently working on, some shopping to be had, and the food, you were greatly missing the taco truck right about now.
But all that said, you were glad to be home. Right now home wasn’t your third-floor apartment in downtown Duluth. It was curled up on Curtis' couch, watching a television documentary about a haunted house in Pennsylvania where the ghost team started talking about the history associated with the residence. Outside, big heavy flakes slammed against the window like they were trying to escape the cold too, but the clear glass on the picture window was keeping you and Curtis safe.
Wrapped around your legs was the afghan off the back of the couch, Curtis’s hand was resting on the curve of your waist, his fingertips lightly grazing the bit of skin peeping from your pajamas you had spent most of the day wearing and nearby the small wood stove he used for the first floor chill was popping once in a while as the wood provided them with sleep inducing warmth.
Your head was laid down on his thigh, the very motion of his fingers and the warmth under the blanket making your eyes slip close once in a while in complete blissful calm.
It was settling in the way that this felt like where you were supposed to be at the end of your day. You didn’t even realize that the simple motion of letting your eyes close and give in to that feeling would make your breathing grow heavier and you completely lost track of the show.
Curtis noticed though, because that last bit of tension seeped from you and finally you let yourself sink into his lap. He could feel the warmth of your breath’s sink into the fabric of his black jeans while sleep seemed to sneak up on you.
He couldn’t resist letting his fingers slip further down, without any intentions other than to rub at your hip, the soothing sensation making you stretch a bit in a moan at the comforting touch he provided. His gaze stayed on the tv for the most part, being interested in the findings and history of the old homestead that actually reminded him of his own home.
He wondered where his house's ghosts were wandering around tonight. He had heard a few creaks earlier on the stairs, which might be from the cold snapping the house's old bones outside, but it was easier to let himself think it was Wilford and Lillian appreciating what he was doing with their loved home.
It certainly has all come back to life since you came into the picture. His weekends no longer consisted of him all alone, but you were there with your endless amounts of sewing projects and script rewrites for your drama club, working on your next science-themed project for your classroom, the scattering of your books from the living room to the upstairs nightstand where you never seemed to bring them home to finish reading and he never mentioned it simply because he liked to read them too before going to sleep. His little Honey had some erotic reading tastes that he fully intended to use on you.
Like the recent chapter, he read the other night while you were back at your apartment gave a very detailed description of using paints in foreplay. He chuckled softly to himself imagining the painting the two of you would make, hung up for no one to know.
His amusement with his thoughts must have woken you, cause you stirred just a bit, shifting to roll to your back and look up at him, blinking sleepily at him for a moment. “What’s funny?”
“Oh, just thinking about how good you would look covered in paint while I was having my way with you.” Curtis said matter of factly while watching the ending of the show with his eyes half shut like he was also starting to fall asleep.
You blinked at him a moment while his gaze drifted almost lazily down to where you were laid on his lap, the crinkle in the corner of his eyes giving away his amusement at the way your face heated up. Your brows twisted for a moment in thought as you clearly recalled reading something very similar. “Did you read my book?”
A grin cracked on his face with a suggestive arch of his brows that said he clearly did and you gasped when he swooped down to steal a kiss from you. “Honey, you want me to kiss and tell?”
You gave a teasing little snort as you went cross eyed staring up at him. “They are for educational purposes.”
Curtis straightened back to a sit, his fingers dancing along your neck and massaging into your hair at the base of your scalp, it felt so good that you let yourself get slightly distracted by it. “Oh I know you are getting quite the education from it. I can’t wait to reap the benefits.”
You again felt your face heating up, knowing exactly what things he read in your books. All the kinky little smut fests that had supposed plot lines leading up to all of them. Your hands covered your face with a groan, peeking up between your fingers. “You weren’t supposed to learn my dirty secret.”
Curtis clicked the tv off, his features turning thoughtful at your words. “Why is that, were they something you didn’t want me to see Honey?”
“No, no, I don’t care. I’m just shocked you even took an interest in my pile.” You gave a little shrug while giving a yawn and cuddling in closer, enjoying the quiet of the wood crackling in the nearby stove and the snow gently hitting on the glass. “But…” You went a bit quiet, trying to sort through the masquerade of feelings it brought up in you that Curtis wasn’t making some snide remark about your ‘porn’. If anything, he seemed to enjoy it if he was mentally filing away scenes from it. Curtis as usual was patient, not rushing you to spit out what you were trying to say. “I like that you saw them and you’re okay with them?”
Curtis already knew what was on your mind, you had questioned him a few times about things that he honestly never would have thought about. That your ex was such a controlling asshole to you that you still worried about him actually being mad if you did something you thought he wouldn’t care for. His features softened towards you. “Honey, I am always going to be okay with whatever you choose to read and want you to. You don’t ever have to hide them from me. It’s like the toys, I encourage it.”
Any apprehension seemed to melt away when you got that confirmation from him, moving to ease yourself up. Curtis's arms shot up in a stretch while giving a yawn. “But tonight, I’m crashing early so no smut reading for me. Gotta do snow cleanup before leaving for the yard in the morning.”
Your hand reached out for his, helping him off the couch. “Meet you upstairs?”
“Go on up, I'm just gonna tend this fire and make sure the house is closed up for the night.” He tugged you in close for a second to steal a kiss and then released you towards the stairs.
As you started up the old creaky stairs, with the various pieces of artwork and old photographs of his family hanging along the hallway leading towards Curtis’s bedroom, your pile of sewing materials piled on the bottom step amid some of Curtis's clothes that needed patching, to the kitchen where you could hear Curtis opening the cupboard above the stove that held all your teas and honey, out of the corner of your eye you saw the cover of one of your books on the coffee table your boyfriend takes sneak peeks at as well as his reading glasses perched atop of the cover, this old house with its stories that you were starting to become a part of and the man who would follow right behind you because he always tried to do what he said he was going to do, these things were starting to feel like home more then that drafty old apartment you had crashed landed in after you restart your life to get away from your ex.
This was becoming where your heart belonged.

Not So Berry (Straud Descendants) Gen 9
Today's (8/26/2024) Episode: A Little Harvestfest Fun
Jade had made her farewells after Skye’s party, and shortly after Valentina was saying her own goodbyes to the young Lawbournes at the homestead.
“G-ma go bye-bye?” Skye asked, clearly confused by this shake-up to his well-ordered world. Valentina picked him up and hugged him tight “Don’t worry, I’ll be back to visit, and you tell mommy and daddy to call me if you get lonely, OK?”
Skye smiled and nodded, snuggling in close. After one last kiss she gently put him down and turned to embrace her stepson. Well, I’m off to help Scott and Bria prepare my signature Huckleberry Tofurkey for our Tomorang Harvestfest. You take good care of my little man, you hear?”
“Absolutely” her stepson replied, “After all, I learned from the best, and he’ll be having a grand time at Don’s with his cousin Adelaide tonight.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Adelaide was Great Grandpa Don’s firstborn with the latest Mrs. Lothario. He had indeed married Rhea, the sim he’d told Luigi all about during their last Geekcon adventure. In an effort to bond with her husband’s extended family the young heiress had invited Luigi and Denton over to the couple’s stately Glimmerbrook estate for Harvestfest.
Rhea had assumed she’d have the most in common with the other mother of a toddler, but Noemi’s social awkwardness made small talk an uphill battle, and their young ones didn’t start off instant buds either.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Over in Don’s downstairs office things were going much better. Denton and Luigi were taking advantage of the time before dinner to host a special dual player modded Sims Forever Charity event: “Harvestfest Turducken – A Sims Forever Holiday meal streaming live from the Lothario mansion”
“I’ll go wrangle our guests” Luigi told his cousin once they were online. “Can you get our “very special” (and possibly deadly) dinner prepped and ready? The poll is open to decide which sims will be the “lucky” ones to join us this evening!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While the boys were happily putting together a virtual dinner party, Bridget had followed Don into the actual kitchen. With the aide of Luigi’s drone Yoshi, she was “supervising” (and streaming) the immortal chef’s preparation of the feast they’d all be enjoying that night.
Luigi cut back and forth between game footage and the live documentary, until Don finished up and called everyone to the grand meal.
The in-game Pufferfish wound up being as well prepared as Don’s impeccable Lamb dish, so after the pair of streamers completed their virtual event (without culinary tragedy) and uploaded a last few high-quality shots of Don’s savory masterpiece, everyone sat down to eat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Noemi was much more relaxed during the meal than she’d been before it, settling across from gaming savvy Denton in the kitchen and happily striking up a conversation about Project Daisy. He was excited to get his hands on an early access copy of the game as soon as it was ready.
“With you two at the helm this thing is sure to be a hit” he told her as he served himself and Markus a second slice of lamb.
“Luigi appreciates my outsider perspective on the game as much as my technical work,” she said, “but making sure he actually rests his hand is my most important job.” At Denton’s grimace, she nodded. “Exactly. Dealing with his Carpel Tunnel has been hard on him. He wants to do more, but I keep reminding him that overdoing it will just make it harder to work, play, or code that alpha version of the game you’re dying to try out.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile in the dining room, Luigi thanked his grandfather for the delicious meal that met his anemia and diabetes related dietary requirements.
“Making healthy food tasty and tasty food healthy is the highest calling of a chef.” Don said. “I hear you’re becoming a pretty good cook yourself.”
“I’m headed that way.” Luigi replied “Cooking was dad’s favorite activity, not mine, but Noemi has my “mouse time” tightly regulated to protect my wrist, so I’m in the kitchen more often. Now that the stream is over, I promised her I’d be offline for the rest of the day. I know she’s trying to help, but I tell you, there’s only so much “resting” a sim can take!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After dinner the adults were preparing to leave when they discovered Skye and Adelaide happily playing “queens of the castle”.
Not wanting to disturb them Don turned to his grandson. “If you need to be offline anyway, and Yoshi is all warmed up, why don’t we leave these two alone and record that cosmetic promo we had planned for next week right now?”
“Sounds good to me!” Luigi nodded, and the men left Noemi and Rhea to once again attempt small talk while they headed upstairs to get started.

“  Agafia's homestead was built across much of the 20th century by her family — its only residents since about 1937. That was the year that Agafia's father, Karp, set off with his wife and two children into the Siberian wilderness.
Her family was part of the old believers sect which she still practice.
“Occasionally, she reads Old Believer newspapers, depending on how often her sporadic visitors deliver them. One of the more peculiar notions she’s picked up from these papers is that bar codes are marks of the devil. “It’s the stamp of the Antichrist,” she said. “People bring me bags of seeds with bar codes on them. I take the seeds out and burn the bags right away and then plant the seeds.
She told us that drinking anything but the water from her beloved Erinat River made her ill, and city air made her sick, too.”
“It’s scary out there,” Agafia said. “You can’t breathe. There are cars everywhere. There is no clean air. Each car that passes by leaves so many toxins in the air. You have no other option but to stay at home.”

Introducing Me and My Blog (2012)
I retired from full-time movement work in July of 2011 when I left my job as Leadership Development Coordinator for the AFL-CIO. I took a few months off from work and traveled, caught up on personal business, hosted some friends from the south, renewed connections with some Oregon friends, and enjoyed the Oregon summer and early fall. Currently I’m doing part-time work with the Alliance for a Just Society and I serve on the boards of Western States Center and the Rural Organizing Project.
Now I am figuring out what it means to be “retired” when so much of my life is tied to activism. I’ll be reflecting more on that topic in my upcoming blog posts.
I love travel, my local library (novels, history, biography and autobiography), independent and documentary films, and going out to hear music. I live near downtown Salem and I’m committed to getting to the pool several times each week and doing as many of my errands on foot as possible. I’m learning to cook new recipes and rely as much as possible on locally grown foods. I have a network of friends around the country who I enjoy spending time with. Last year I took a month-long trip with my brother to Paris and the UK and connected with our Welsh cousins. This year I’m traveling to El Salvador with CAUSA, Oregon’s immigrant rights organization, and to Spain with a couple of friends.
My roots are in western Pennsylvania and each of my parents had a Welsh and an English parent. My grandfathers both worked in the steel mills in Homestead and my maternal grandmother was a seamstress in a baby clothes factory and later worked in a hospital laundry doing mending. My paternal great-grandfather was killed in the Homestead mill in an industrial accident and my grandfather Howell went to work there at age 12 to help support his mother and 4 other children. My mom was a secretary for our local school board and my dad worked on-site at big construction projects doing payroll, purchasing, and managing the trailer office and moved around from place to place where the company he worked for was building roads and bridges. I like looking at bridges because my dad got me interested in them.
I started my organizing career in 1973 with ACORN in Ft. Smith Arkansas. I worked with Oregon Fair Share (now Oregon Action), Oregon NARAL and national NARAL (now NARAL Pro-Choice America) in the late 1970′s and early 1980′s. In 1982 I moved to North Carolina and directed the Carolina Community Project, founded NC Fair Share, and then worked regionally in the south with Grassroots Leadership and South Carolina United Action. During that time I had the opportunity to be connected to programs led by the Center for Third World Organizing and the Applied Research Center based in Oakland, CA. I returned to Oregon in the mid-90′s to work as a trainer with Western States Center. In 1997 I moved back to NC to work for the AFL-CIO as a field representative and later became the Deputy Director for the Southern Region and then coordinator of national leadership development programs for staff and elected leaders of our local and state organizations.
Starting with my time at Grassroots Leadership I committed myself to embedding an anti-racist perspective into organizing and training work I am involved in. I am one of the founding members of the National Organizers Alliance and NOA has been an important place of connection and support for me. Through my regional work in the south and northwest, I have met and worked with many amazing organizers and organizations around the country. I am very excited to see the growth of the Occupy movement.
I’m looking forward to writing more in this blog about my retirement plans and questions, my reflections on my work as an organizer and current events, and the travel I’ll be doing over the next couple of years. I’m also including links to organizations I mention on the side bar on my blog page. I hope my readers will comment and both challenge and add to what I have to say.

Paul Johns: Beautiful Flowers and How to Grow Them 28 September - 26 January 2025 The Dowse X City Gallery Wellington Curated by DJCS She asked, ‘Who are you?’ Tahana laughed, ‘No one really.’
Beautiful Flowers and How to Grow Them is an exhibition of Paul Johns’ portraits, captured on 16mm film and Polaroid between 1975 and 1985. Johns’ films have largely been considered the material source for his photographs. They are exhibited together in Wellington for the first time. Predominantly filmed in the intimate setting of Johns’ central Christchurch studio, a Christchurch railway station, and at a friend's Brooklyn flat on weekend trips to Carmen Rupe’s Wellington, Johns' portraits capture the utopic energy of a flourishing underground scene in Christchurch and Wellington – a generation inspired by newly politicised and subversive forms of popular culture. Beautiful Flowers and How to Grow Them expands portraiture in the context of contemporary photography and moving image. Taking advantage of the equivocal nature of portrait and documentary photography, Johns’ playfully blurs the lines between aesthetics and ethics, fact and fiction, and between art and its social conditions. The many heroes in Beautiful Flowers and How to Grow Them look at themselves in the lens of Johns’ camera with cheek. And in turn, Johns’ portraits evoke new ways of representing and constructing identity, memory, and time. ‘Who can look on a picture of a beautiful garden without feeling the impulse to grow flowers, and what results this can have!’ - Derek Jarman.
