I don't buy many children's books on the spur of the moment. Between my copious want lists of new and classic picture books, the library books I'm always borrowing, and the lovely review copies that show up occasionally on my doorstep, it's pretty rare for me to just purchase a picture book on a whim. The moment I set eyes on the cover of "These Words I Shaped For You" (2017), though, poet Megan Merchant's ode to the mother-child bond, before I even knew what it was about, I knew I had to own it. From the title itself, to Basak Agaoglu's incredibly striking cover artwork, I was immediately intrigued. And as I picked it up and started to flip through it, every page spoke to me, with words, with colours, with sheer, beautiful emotion. I stayed in a marriage where I was unhappy for 12 years. I didn’t solely stay for the kids. I also stayed cause it was what people expected of me. At the time, I was a Minister in church and was constantly told what a “good” wife should do, and that I need to just pray and God will heal my marriage. I finally had to decide to live my life for me instead of the expectations of others. I needed to do what was healthiest for my kids, instead of letting them see the arguing. I chose to do what was healthiest for us and have never regretted it. Staying for the kids is a terrible reason to choose to stay. Instead they grow up in a hostile environment with their Sy nervous system in a state of hyperarousal. I turned 35 last week 🍷🎈🎁 . . And Im so happy with how I feel (strongest and most confident in a very long time) and all of the amazing blessings and gifts in my life. The most important being my 2 babes who light up my world everyday (even on the challenging ones). . . My friend from TN surprised me with a pumpkin 🎃 cake, balloons and a nice long visit. Then my mama made me a nice home cooked meal and cake. It was perfect and I really don’t take any gesture for granted (I didn’t grow up celebrating my bdays until I went off to college. Religion I grew up in..). . .
