I don't buy many children's books on the spur of the moment. Between my copious want lists of new and classic picture books, the library books I'm always borrowing, and the lovely review copies that show up occasionally on my doorstep, it's pretty rare for me to just purchase a picture book on a whim. The moment I set eyes on the cover of "These Words I Shaped For You" (2017), though, poet Megan Merchant's ode to the mother-child bond, before I even knew what it was about, I knew I had to own it. From the title itself, to Basak Agaoglu's incredibly striking cover artwork, I was immediately intrigued. And as I picked it up and started to flip through it, every page spoke to me, with words, with colours, with sheer, beautiful emotion. Kids WANT to read!

Kids are naturally born with the desire to read! Kids love to read! I know, trust me, you are looking at all those books on the book shelf that they refuse to open. I often hear parents say “we are not getting that book, you have a ton at home that you do not read”. Here are some tips for cultivating a love of reading within your child.  

Tip# 1: BUY THAT BOOK! Please do not ever inhibit your child from wanting to read. If you can afford that book that he is begging for, then buy it. Yes, they have a ton of books at home but not that book. That particular book has your child already engaged and he has interest in it! The is always room for books, leaving room for growth and knowledge. 

Tip# 2: Did you know that a child who has grown up in a home with an average of 500 books (not all kids books) will attend 3.5 more years of education than a child that doesn’t.  Having books in your home is where it all begins! Their love of reading starts with you and they will thank you for it. School will be easier for them and they will earn about 824,000 dollars more, in a lifetime! The power of books is incredible. 

Tip# 3:  Read aloud!  You should be reading aloud to your kids! I know you cannot read that frozen book one more time! I cannot either!  You decide on the books you read to your kids. Pick books that you can stand to read aloud and that you will enjoy. This helps make story time a bonding experience. The brain develops differently at every stage. Experts agree that you should be reading aloud to your child while you are pregnant until they move out of the house. Readers who once loved to read stop, and this usually happens in the fourth grade. Yes they can read but, you need to read to them too. 

Tip# 4: Leave books in different places around your house! The bathroom, play room, living room, and put them with the covers facing out.  Kids love colors, facing the books out and roatating them, will keep them engaged! 

Tip# 5: Yes, I love all of our new tech stuff, but I also know that my kids need to de-screen often! Activity books, that are educational, are a great way to get their mind flowing and stimulate their creativity. In the car, at home, whenever you need some quiet time, hand them an activity book. 

Tip# 6: What are your child’s interests. Ask them! They tend to love a book if they're into it. Monster truck, ballerinas, their favorite movie.  I love valuable educational books because kids are learning without even realizing it! Check in with your kiddos, their interests change and that is okay. Embrace it, they are discovering who they are and what they love!

I hesitated a bit about including this book in the Chanukah roundup, because as Kirkus Reviews points out, there's really no inclusion of the religious or historical aspects of Chanukah at all, which honestly makes me a bit uncomfortable. I don't love books that take a culturally assimilative approach, in general. But babies love Chanukah too, and honestly, "Barnyard Bubbe's Hanukkah" (2019) by Joni Klein-Higger and Barbara Sharf is an adorable little holiday board book.
