Samara revitalized and reopened to the public: views of the living area.
Under administration of Indiana Landmarks and the John Christian Family Memorial Fund, the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Usonion house now boasts a full-time curator (Nathan) who likes to say it's not a house museum, it's a house that offers tours. And it still has the feeling about it that one could simply arrive with luggage and take up residence.
The Woodland Ave entrance, looking up toward the house.
A more full version of how Samara came about can be read elsewhere on this 'blog, but the condensed story is: the Christians didn't have a lot of money but were willing to keep going with Wright's design regardless of how long it took -- and it took decades.
Wright didn't like attics and basements, and so included storage everywhere, including under the long bench seat in the living room.
Some furnishings and exterior elements weren't part of the initial construction in the 1950s, but had to wait until the 1990s. Mr. Christian even created and patented a copper patination process so that new exterior copper would take on the appearance of copper cladding that had been in the weather for 40 years.
The copper details as seen above were added in the 90s, finishing touches to the design that had to wait for funding. New copper would have been too bright and, well, coppery, but Christian's patina added age in about a day.
The trouble Wright's designs face, even now, is time, gravity, and maybe a little architect's "overreach." Many of the forward-looking design elements that took Wright to prominence were thwarted in the long run because the materials chosen couldn't stand the years in the weather or the way they were installed couldn't stand up to the demand of actual use.
The patio beyond the living room.
Samara was found, after all the years, to be subsiding in several places, and much of the exterior woodwork was failing. Following Christian's death in 2015, efforts were begun to revitalize the structure to keep it viable into the future, which brought about the $1.6 million renovation, which began in May of 2022.
A few months back, Indiana Landmarks hosted a talk on historic preservation and renovation at West Lafayette's public library that included a look at the Samara work. A restorer from the Chicago firm engaged to the job described having to replace exterior beams (like those pictured above), install proper footings under walls, matching brick and mortar color to swap-out deteriorated bricks, and more, to make the house "better than new." The results garnered national recognition.
The longest views in the house: from the dining area to the living area (or vice-versa) at an angle, measuring close to 60 feet.
A Wright hallmark: the (apparently) unsupported corner, with glass.
As noted above, Samara now has a curator, and he likes to show-off what Wright designed. Besides the under-couch storage, for instance, many of the tables in the living area can be used as seating, while the block seats can stack -- or hide children's shoes:
The dining chairs, in a sneaky twist, require proper posture and alertness: a slouch (or someone nodding off) may find that the chair goes out-of-balance -- as the base has beveled corners (one of which is circled here):
The base does, however, include the nook under the seat, where small items might be kept.
In the master bedroom. The samara-inspired clerestory windows, like the one seen above the desk here, abound, allowing natural light into nearly every space. Some of them can be opened to allow for cross-ventilation.
Outside the bedrooms.
Nathan opined that the over-all project was about 98% done: a proper gate is wanted at the west end of the driveway (to replace the chain that is there now) and a bubbling goldfish pond outside the bedrooms that was never begun. He keeps his fingers crossed.
Samara website with more on the history, and a page to book your own tour.

2022: A milestone year in Indiana – and beyond
2022 was a milestone year for the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter and – most importantly – for the fight against this disease. It included the Chapter’s first $1 million Walk to End Alzheimer’s and the most promising news yet in dementia research.
Take a look back at the year in advocacy, care and support, research, fundraising, and awareness.
FEBRUARY
Advocates from across Indiana urged state legislators to pass a bill requiring minimum dementia training standards for home health aides during the Virtual Indiana State Day of Action.
MARCH
The Alzheimer’s Association 2022 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report was released. It found significant shortages in the dementia care workforce, both nationwide and in Indiana. According to the report, there are currently 66 geriatricians in Indiana. By 2050, the state will need 299 geriatricians to serve 10% of those 65 and older – a 353% increase.
After passing the Indiana House and Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support, Governor Eric Holcomb signed the dementia training bill into law.
MAY
Volunteer advocates traveled to Washington D.C. for the first in-person Advocacy Forum since before the pandemic. They met with members of Congress and their staff to advocate for making Alzheimer’s a national priority. Evansville advocate Evan Haynes-Knepper was honored with the Young Advocate of the Year award.
JUNE
We concluded our fiscal year and found that in FY22, 5,256 people in our Chapter area attended an education program, support group, or early stage activity – a 37% increase over the previous year.
Staff and volunteers attended Indy Pride, sharing information on Alzheimer’s in the LGBTQ community and raising awareness of the resources available to help all those affected. The Greater Indiana Chapter also sponsored a Hydration Station.
West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis announced that he has been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. By sharing his diagnosis, he raised awareness of the disease and helped other families know they are not alone in this journey. Later in the year, he served as honorary chair of the Greater Lafayette Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
Staff and volunteers attended the Indy Juneteenth Festival Wellness Fair at Celebration Plaza in White River State Park.
The Longest Day participants held fundraisers on and around the summer solstice. By the end of the campaign, Aug. 31, they raised more than $324,000. The top team was Spoke & Memories at more than $40,000.
JULY
The Greater Indiana Chapter once again partnered with the Indiana Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center to provide information and resources at the Indiana Black and Minority Health Fair.
A new event for The Longest Day, the Making Memories Classic pickleball tournament, was held in Greenwood. It was co-hosted by Greater Indiana Chapter board member Dr. David Mandlebaum and local pickleball pros Jade and Jackie Kawamoto. The event raised nearly $36,000.
The 2022 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) was held in San Diego. Greater Indiana Chapter executive director Natalie Sutton was in attendance and shared her reflections on the experience.
AUGUST
Indianapolis RivALZ players and coaches held their flag football game, raising more than $78,000.
SEPTEMBER
The 2022 Walk to End Alzheimer’s season began and continued for six weeks across 13 Greater Indiana Chapter communities. By the end of the season, 6,842 participants raised close to $2 million.
Positive topline results were announced from a Phase 3 global clinical trial of a treatment called lecanemab. The news brought additional energy and excitement to the remaining Walks.
To mark World Alzheimer’s Day, Sept. 21, the Chapter held a special Effective Communication Strategies for Future Healthcare Workers program. Students attended virtually from across the state.
Photos: Ted Fields/Indianapolis Airport Authority
The Indianapolis Airport Authority, sponsor of the Indianapolis Walk to End Alzheimer’s Promise Garden, unveiled a 10-foot tall spinning Promise Garden flower in the Civic Plaza area of the Indianapolis International Airport. The display was surrounded by information about the warning signs of the disease and the Alzheimer’s Association Helpline (800.272.3900), a free resource that is available nationwide 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
OCTOBER
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s season wrapped up, and the Indianapolis Walk achieved a major milestone – raising more than $1 million for the first time ever.
NOVEMBER
The 2022 Chocolate Sunday brunch gala was held, raising nearly $400,000.
To mark National Family Caregivers Month, the chapter held a “Caring for the Caregiver” workshop with about 40 faith leaders in Fort Wayne. Reaching out to faith communities was identified as a top priority during a local community forum, and both parties have committed to continuing the partnership in the new year.
At the Clinical Trials on Alzheimer's Disease conference (CTAD), data from the Phase 3 global clinical trial of lecanemab confirmed this treatment changes the course of the disease in a meaningful way for people in the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer's Association has called for the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) accelerated approval of lecanemab and for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to revise its coverage policy with the utmost urgency. Read the full statement from the Alzheimer’s Association here.
There has never been a more exciting time in the fight against Alzheimer’s and all other dementias, and 2023 promises to be another monumental year. Stay tuned on the latest research news by downloading the Science Hub app and following the Greater Indiana Chapter on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
Here’s to 2023!

I felt like this many times, often quitting before being pulled back into writing. At this moment, I have a slightly shitty feeling about life, but there's always a platinum lining at the end of the day.
Every day seems like nothing is following through and I have to deal with feeling like a failure because nothing positively large happened in my life.
Sometimes, I forget that my ideas take time to develop and work on, because I'm like fire burning for success yet I can't seem to switch off the need to succeed in my soul.
It's not always easy for me to take my time, and I want to very much so. But my patience has been wearing thin these days because I aim big most of the time.
I want to be the game changer in something for my life. And I want it now more than ever. But I know I can't rush anything.
So why do I find myself on edge? Because I want certain things that seem unttainable, especially a chance to inspire others and live big.
I have been living with disabilities since I was born. The only good time I felt happy the most was when I was living in a townhome in West Lafayette, Indiana with my mom and younger brother and his girlfriend who became his first wife before they divorced later on.
I used to be happy in Chicago, until I suddenly wanted to move to Los Angeles, California and start over there. But I wasn't born there or in Chicago. I was born in Aurora, Colorado in a military hospital that's now closed down.
And I have lived in the Midwest most of my life, wanting to do something with my life. So why didn't I push myself to do something with my life? Because I come from a dysfunctional home life that's been completely complicated for who knows how long.
And I'm 40 years old, having done nothing for twenty-three years.
And although I dread my failures, I am still willing to do something with my life and write my stories. I just need more than just a push. I need total commitment and devotion to my projects, otherwise I'm doomed to continue procrastinating until it's too late.
And I am tired of being lazy all the time, but man does life really suck.
However, if I have ideas from the stories I read, watch and listen to and I find myself wanting to do something about that, then that means something.
if you’re not meant to be a writer then what are all the ideas in your head for

Former Purdue, Jaguars lineman Uche Nwaneri dies at 38 Former Jacksonville Jaguars offensive lineman Uchechukwu Nwaneri died on Friday, the team announced on Monday afternoon. He was 38. Nwaneri was at his wife’s home in West Lafayette, Indiana, after driving up from Georgia last week when he apparently collapsed, according to the Lafayette Journal and Courier. His wife found him unresponsive in a bedroom around 1 a.m., per the report, and called police. Preliminary results from an autopsy indicate a possible heart attack. Officials have found no signs of foul play. Nwaneri played in the league for seven seasons from 2007-2013. The Jaguars selected him in the fifth round of the 2007 draft out of Purdue. After making one start as a rookie, Nwaneri started the rest of the way through his career. He briefly signed with the Dallas Cowboys in 2014, but did not end up making their roster. Since he retired, Nwaneri started a popular YouTube channel called “The Observant Lineman,” where he covered the Jaguars and the rest of the league at large. #uchenwaneri #jacksonvillejaguars #nfl #mycelebrityandi https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm89fYeLoXq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
