A little thing like a novel coronavirus didn’t completely stop infrastructure projects going ahead around the country, and scenes around the Lafayettes show no exception.  Sure, things might have been put on pause initially, but at some point, someone realized that less traffic on the streets meant less tie-ups around work sites, too.  Well, they were less obtrusive, until the state government relaxed safety restrictions and the new school year put more commuters back on the streets.

A favorite example of the late updates is the left turn signal shown above.  For decades, making a left turn from 9th Street onto South Street was a task where one took one’s chances with opposing traffic; I actively avoided making this turn--until I found that a signal had been installed!  Finally!  A pleasant, “it’s the little things” surprise after emerging from “safer-at-home.”

On the other side of town(s), a new roundabout and a new, wider railroad trestle at the intersection of Indiana Highway 26 and Newman road elicited a “whaat?!” when I drove through last week.  I guess new buildings around the intersection warranted a better traffic flow?  In the first image above, a new building can be seen in the distance to the left; no idea what it’s for, but it hasn’t been there long.

On campus projects have continued as well.  The above images are of an expanding veterinary complex being built alongside a roadway that was only finished a couple of years ago.

The Purdue Discover Park project has also continued apace, with new office/research spaces, and more campus or campus-adjacent living.  This on top of the buildings that have gone up on around campus, but especially on the southwest side.  Back in 2016, I posted this image:

amused that it was necessary to have a “sidewalk closed” sign posted since beyond the construction fence the sidewalk was clearly gone.  Today, it looks like this:

West Lafayette also now officially has a skyline--I guess.  The two largest residential towers opened at some point in time that I don’t remember, but their location gives them a dramatic presence over the Wabash valley:

Other new residential projects are also going up just blocks off campus, but so far none are as tall as these.

Where are you from? How did you get into creative work and what is your impetus for creating?

I currently live in Lafayette, IN, but I grew up in Crown Point, IN.  Both my parents are resourceful, creative, and great at making or fixing anything.  I consider myself fortunate that they always encouraged me to be anything I wanted to be, and even though I realized I wasn't going to be a ballerina or an astronaut, I never thought twice about being an artist.  My mom used to make beautiful stained glass, and I think her example was the impetus for my desire to create.  As a kid, I would copy the images in my coloring books onto my own paper instead of coloring within the lines.  My parents signed me up for drawing classes at South Shore Arts in Munster, where I learned fundamental techniques and used pastels for the first time.  Although my mom still denies calling herself an artist by saying her sister is the talented one, they both are.  My grandmother was an artist, too, but I think she and my mother simply did not have an opportunity to develop their abilities.  In some ways, I feel like I'm honoring this innate ability that has been passed down through the women in my family.       Tell me about your current/upcoming show/exhibit/book/project and why it’s important to you. What do you hope people get out of your work? 

In May 2019, I participated in the On-Ramp Creative Entrepreneur Course provided by the Indiana Arts Commission, which has made a tremendous impact in helping me recognize my potential and define my creative goals.  I was awarded the On-Ramp Fellowship Grant, enabling me to complete a project of my design.  The first part was to complete the remaining supervision and exam testing requirements needed to become a Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC).  The second part included researching and developing my own Creative Empowerment Workshop series, which will provide psychoeducation about art therapy, information regarding local mental health services, and opportunities for therapeutic art making.  The third part, which I am currently working on, includes creating a new body of work that reflects my understanding of mental illness and mental wellness.    

As an art therapist, I facilitate the art making of those with mental illness as they discover new ways of being.  During art therapy sessions, my clients and I often discuss issues of relationships, loss, change, acceptance, identity, and meaning.  We explore these six themes in relation to the people, places, and things in our lives that have made an impression on us.  In addiction and mental health recovery programs, it is common to hear the phrase “people, places, and things.”  The phrase serves as a reminder that anything can be a trigger leading to a relapse or a return to maladaptive patterns of being.  My art therapy training has allowed me to uncover, recover, and reestablish new ways of thinking that I then translate into my own creative work.  I wanted to begin a personal exploration of the six themes and develop a greater understanding of my own people, places, and things that have led me to be the person I am now.  I’ve been selected for a solo exhibition at the Tippecanoe Arts Federation in September 2021, and will offer my workshops leading up to and during the exhibition.  I want to increase awareness of mental health issues and challenge the stigma of mental illness.

Does collaboration play a role in your work—whether with your community, artists or others? How so and how does this impact your work?

I think collaborating with and creating alongside others can be very empowering.  I’ve recognized isolation can breed self-doubt and hinder creative work.  Without constructive feedback from peers regarding areas that need growth, or someone to highlight potential where I see none, I find it difficult to delve into new projects.  For a while, it felt like my artist and art therapist identities were separate, so I wanted to find a way to unify those roles.  I've used my grant period to learn about alternative roles for art therapists and research models of community art therapy in nontraditional settings and formats, such as an open-studio concept.  There are not a lot of opportunities available for people to make meaningful connections with others in a nonjudgmental atmosphere.  Stigma surrounding mental illness and treatment prevent people from seeking help until it becomes unbearable.  I hope my workshops provide a safe alternative, either as an introduction to the benefits of therapeutic art making and as a preventative measure, or as a step-down from more intensive treatment in order to maintain wellness.

Considering the political climate, how do you think the temperature is for the arts right now, what/how do you hope it may change or make a difference?

I think it’s possible for artists to amplify voices that are not heard, regardless of the political climate. Hopefully my art and my workshops not only decrease stigma in the community, but also encourage local leaders and politicians to support policy that leads to increases in the funding, availability, and accessibility of mental health resources.

Artist Wanda Ewing, who curated and titled the original LFF exhibit, examined the perspective of femininity and race in her work, and spoke positively of feminism, saying “yes, it is still relevant” to have exhibits and forums for women in art; does feminism play a role in your work?

I agree, it is still relevant, and feminism does play a role in my work.  I would not call my work overtly feminist, but it is autobiographical, and I think it reveals my interest in the female mind and body.  I’ve been strongly influenced by my grandmother, her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, and its impact on each member of my family, especially my mother. A lot of my recent work has been a reflection on the changing roles of women, for example, from daughter to caretaker, and how that change affects one psychologically.  I think empathy grows through recognition of what is fragile and vulnerable in oneself, in others, and in one’s surroundings. Empathy is what is needed to ensure anyone's voice is heard, but we especially need to be listening to the Black Lives Matter movement, and amplify BIPOC and  LGBTQIA voices. Ewing’s advice to aspiring artists was “you’ve got to develop the skill of when to listen and when not to;” and “Leave. Gain perspective.” What is your favorite advice you have received or given?  

A few of my college professors said to never stop making something.  Thinking about the next step is only part of it, but you have to keep experimenting and creating something, as often as you can, even if you’re not completely invested in it.  I think it helped me realize not all work is precious, or note-worthy, and it doesn’t have to be, but it is still important in getting you to the next step, especially when you don’t know what the next step is yet.

Points West & Devils Tower: Looking for Roy and Jillian 

Some time in June of 2017 I thought “I haven’t seen Close Encounters of the Third Kind in, like, years.”  Watching again was mixture of nostalgia trip, child-like fascination, and inspiration.  Much of the first half of the film is set in and around Muncie, Indiana, only a couple of hours from Lafayette and easy enough to visit; Devils Tower is rather farther away (to put it mildly), but I decided it was worth a journey.  In July, I made those trips.

The shot that made me sit up: “Muncie?!  Holy shit!”  I’d totally forgotten that Indiana was a setting in the film.  Looking over various maps, I figured I could find some Muncie locations.  The scenes were actually shot in Alabama, though, so it would only be at my discretion just what might be a “Muncie shot.”

For instance, for reasons mostly unconscious I just felt that the house where Jillian and Barry Guiler lived was south-west of Muncie. Not too far out, as Jillian, just prior to Barry’s being “taken,” was dumping trash into what looked like a municipal waste bin - ergo trash pickup.  In another scene, when Roy Neary is looking for the “downed power lines” and what-ever else might be causing a power outage, the radio chatter in his service truck mentions Cornbread Road.  That is a real Muncie street, and to the south-west of Muncie proper.  I found a house just off Cornbread Road, and I thought “That could be the Guiler home!”

The orientation of this house is off 90 degrees, facing west, but I liked it anyway.  Apparently there was discussion of filming “on location” in Muncie, but budget and other filming needs quashed the notion.

The Norwood neighborhood, to the north-west in Muncie.  Like so many subdivisions built in the post-war U.S., Norwood has a mix of straight and curved streets, lending a similar feel to that used in the film.  In a satellite view, it looked like the majority of neighborhoods built with those mixes of streets were to the north and north-west.  Norwood is also near Ball State, Roy Neary’s alma mater.  Of course I visited it, since I was in the vicinity (following):

That first image is a residence hall.  The second is administration and “welcome center.”  Like on so many campuses, there is that weird mix of old and new structures, and some of the new smack of an architect trying to “emulate the historic,” though I’m not particularly fond of those stylings - they don’t quite make it one way or the other.

I did look for an appropriate pair of railroad crossings, such as Neary was stopped at when he had his “close encounter,” but the tracks around Muncie converge on the center of town, sectioning the landscape in giant pie slices, so they don’t run parallel as seen in the film.

There is no hill like that in the region about Muncie.  One would have to travel scores of miles to the south to find rise enough from which to peer down upon a town.  But hey!  It looked good in the movie, right?  So why not?

Much of the scripted information concerning Muncie and its environs was fanciful: street names, locations, toll booths at the Ohio state line.  Ah! dramatic license.

And then there’s the trip to Devils Tower,  the first-named National Monument.  I went looking for those filmed settings as well, but not assiduously.  More like, if I find the spots, great!  It was for me more about going over the same ground rather than any re-creation.  But a few places were pretty obvious.  Following are scenes form the film, and my shots for comparison.

Convenient happenstance: an SUV, today’s version of the station wagon, barreling down the road from Moorcroft.

“Hey! You’re going the wrong way!”

“I just want to know it’s real.”

Oh, yeah, it’s real.  I actually drove right by this location before I realized what I was looking at.  “Oh, hey!  That’s that hill!”  It’s a little less than a mile from the park entrance.  I shot these on the way out at the end of the day.

What-ever was at the site where production set up the military operation in the 70′s has been completely overturned by the “trading post” and a KOA campground.  

The ticket booth and entry ranger station are likely the same today.

When Roy, Jillian, and Larry slogged their way up from the Belle Fourche River bridge, they were higher up the slope than I got for these shots.  But I didn’t want to stray too far off the trail, being in contravention of park rules.  My apologies to the Park Service; enthusiasm got the better of me.

Yep, some little way farther up that-a-ways.  A prescribed fire went wild over these slopes in 2013.  Many of the trees that had been standing up here were either toppled or cut down.  The strange ways of fire showed, though, in that some trees were obviously completely “torched,” while some just a few yards away were barely touched, if at all.

“O.K., watch the skies please.  We now show uncorrelated targets approaching from the north-north-west.”

The iconic shot of the “Dark Side of the Moon.”  What amuses me today is knowing that there is a trail that leads right to the long, gently sloping valley where this would have been.  I walked it, and, looking about, said “Hey, this must be the place!” The dramatic license taken with these locations really is stretching the - well, more on that elsewhere?

If you’ve a mind, there is a video by one Herve Attia, where-in he visits most of the major filming locations, including inside the houses as they exist today.  He does shoot across some of the spots that I did not.  But then, that is the point of his film.

And if you don’t mind multiple segments on YouTube, Steven Spielberg talked about the history of Close Encounters for a 30th Anniversary special, which is just chock-full of fascinating stuff.  Further links via those videos are there to lead you down the ol’ “rabbit hole.”

Mr. Keith Roysdon, on his ‘blog, writes about the conjunction of the movie and Muncie, his home town. “The movie wasn’t filmed here in Muncie, although there was discussion of that happening. Local officials and Columbia Pictures apparently negotiated for a while and rumors swept through town that the city bought new police cars specifically to seal the deal.”

Ranking the college football head coaching hires for 2021, from Gus Malzahn to Terry Bowden

Editor’s note: This story was updated June 17, 2021, to include new hires.

Auburn paid Gus Malzahn $21.45 million to pack up his stuff and never coach the Tigers again. Tennessee owes Central Florida $6 million in combined buyouts for new athletics director Danny White and coach Josh Heupel.

Availability and increased financial flexibility on both sides allowed UCF and Malzahn to connect on a five-year deal worth $2.3 million annually. It’s a bargain-basement deal relative to Malzahn’s ample SEC experience and the program’s goals of reaching the College Football Playoff and aligning itself for the next round of conference expansion.

On paper, Malzahn and UCF are the dream marriage of the 2020-21 coaching cycle, which was expected to barely make a whisper amid the COVID-19 pandemic but still yielded 15 changes, down from 24 moves a year ago.

That says something about Malzahn and UCF — though you can find flaws in the new pairing if you look close enough — and about the uninspiring series of coaching hires, which featured a handful of big names but largely involved Group of Five and second-level Power Five programs.

The hires can’t be fully judged until three or four years down the road. For now, let’s rank the new names by best fit and the best chance for immediate and long-term success.

Gus Malzahn led Auburn to a 68-35 record in eight seasons before getting fired in December.

1. Gus Malzahn, UCF

Malzahn will inherit one of the top teams in the Group of Five, including one of the nation’s best quarterbacks in Dillon Gabriel, and for the first time in his coaching career have the luxury of holding a talent advantage against nearly every opponent. First off, he’ll have to show how his hurry-up offense can be tailored to fit Gabriel. But to reel in a coach who won 66% of his games at Auburn (2012-20), beat Alabama three times and played for a national championship is an enormous victory for UCF.

2. Bryan Harsin, Auburn

Harsin had options over the years but waited patiently for the right opportunity, following the trajectory of a career that has always taken a calculated approach to the next move. His program at Boise State (2014-20), where he won 78% of his games but never fully escaped Chris Petersen’s shadow, developed the most important positions on the field: quarterbacks, offensive tackles and edge rushers. As long as the standard for success isn’t unseating Nick Saban and Alabama from atop the SEC, Harsin is a very good fit.

3. Steve Sarkisian, Texas

The latest coach to refurbish his reputation with the Crimson Tide, Sarkisian takes over a program fresh off three consecutive top-ranked recruiting classes but in need of a new voice and an established identity on offense. Sarkisian will immediately deliver the latter and make the Longhorns a popular destination for regional and national recruits.

4. Andy Avalos, Boise State

A former Boise State linebacker and defensive coordinator, Avalos is more than ready for a return to his alma mater after spending the last two seasons under Mario Cristobal at Oregon. While former Boise quarterback Kellen Moore was the popular choice to replace Harsin before deciding to stay in the NFL, Avalos is a rising star in the profession and the next possible long-term fit for the Broncos.

5. Lance Leipold, Kansas

All he does is win: Leipold took home six Division III national championships at Wisconsin-Whitewater and then transformed Buffalo into a MAC power. His 2020 team went 6-1, won the MAC East, finished fifth nationally in scoring and became the first team in program history to notch a national ranking. Does this make him overqualified for the nation’s worst Power Five job? Not really, since his predecessor, Les Miles, brought a national championship to Lawrence. But this track record makes him a perfect fit: Leipold is drawn to the fine art of program construction, and KU will give him the time, support and starting point to paint his masterpiece.

6. Butch Jones, Arkansas State

Jones is back in more comfortable surroundings at Arkansas State, one of the most consistently successful programs in the Group of Five. Before being hammered on his way out of the SEC at Tennessee and learning new tricks in his three years as an off-field assistant at Alabama, Jones won 50 games in six seasons at Central Michigan (2007-09) and Cincinnati (2010-12).

7. Clark Lea, Vanderbilt

Lea made his national reputation by putting together three top-15 defenses in a row as the coordinator at Notre Dame. The question of how serving as an assistant at Notre Dame prepares you for running the show with the Commodores — a genuinely important question to ask — is tempered by Lea’s time as a Vanderbilt linebacker (2002-04), giving him a taste of how the program has operated in the past and what can be done to bring the team back into SEC contention.

8. Charles Huff, Marshall

Huff brings an outstanding résumé as an assistant — led by recent stints at Penn State, Mississippi State and Alabama — to a program with expectations of always being in the driver’s seat for the Conference USA championship. Learning under Saban and James Franklin (Penn State) gives Huff an edge over most first-time Group of Five head coaches.

9. Bret Bielema, Illinois

Bielema has a history of success in the Big Ten that bodes well for Illinois. But with a substantial project ahead as the Illini aim for the top half of the West division, Bielema must show he has the energy to recruit and develop talent after the collapse of his tenure at Arkansas (2013-17).

10. Blake Anderson, Utah State

Anderson gets a fresh start after seven strong seasons at Arkansas State (2014-20), where his teams won or shared three Sun Belt championships. Much like Harsin, his predecessor with the Red Wolves, Anderson develops skill talent and has an established blueprint for success in the Group of Five ranks.

11. Josh Heupel, Tennessee

Heupel accepts the toughest job of any new hire: taking the mess that is Tennessee and slowly bringing the Volunteers back into the mix for the division championship and New Year’s Six bowls. That’s a multiple-year process, if it happens at all. If not the name most UT fans were expecting, Heupel will update an underwhelming offense and make Knoxville an appealing destination for skill talent.

12. Shane Beamer, South Carolina

Beamer has worked for Steve Spurrier at South Carolina (2007-10); for his father, Frank, at Virginia Tech (2011-15); for Kirby Smart at Georgia (2016); and most recently for Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma (2017-20), helping the Sooners to three playoff berths. The résumé speaks for itself. But there are unanswered questions about how Beamer and his staff will fare in a crowded recruiting scene and what the offense will look like in 2021 and beyond.

13. Will Hall, Southern Mississippi

Speaking of offenses: Hall’s up-tempo philosophy has been a success on almost every level of NCAA competition, from his time as a Division II head coach at West Alabama (2011-13) and West Georgia (2014-16) through his stints as an assistant at Louisiana-Lafayette (2017), Memphis (2018) and Tulane (2019-20).

14. Kane Wommack, South Alabama

Wommack’s age — at just 33, he’s the youngest coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision — is not the concern it would’ve been made out to be a decade ago, when few schools had the nerve to hand over the keys to a coach little more than a decade removed from his own college experience. He’s also coached at South Alabama (2016-17) and was recently the defensive coordinator for Indiana’s breakthrough 2020 season. In all, Wommack represents a slight gamble for a program in need of a rebuild and an example of a Group of Five team buying low on a young coach viewed as one of the up-and-coming defensive minds in the sport.

Jedd Fisch’s last stop was as quarterbacks coach with the New England Patriots.

15. Maurice Linguist, Buffalo

Linguist takes over for Leipold after a very brief stint as the defensive coordinator at Michigan. The former Baylor defensive back, 37, has been across the college football map since 2012, when he began the first of two seasons as the Bulls’ defensive backs coach. Since then, Linguist has spent two years at Iowa State, one year at Mississippi State, a season at Minnesota, two seasons at Texas A&M and one year in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys. So what does that tell us about Linguist? He’s taken on more and more responsibilities and been hired by some of the biggest names in the sport, if we count his few months with the Wolverines. But there are several unknowns about the Bulls’ new coach, who has never been a coordinator and takes over a roster depleted by attrition.

16. Jedd Fisch, Arizona

Arizona is banking on a coaching vagabond with one year of Pac-12 experience (UCLA in 2017) having the chops needed to bring the Wildcats out of the conference basement and into the mix for bowl bids, let alone a division title. Fisch has hired well, including the addition of former Michigan assistant Don Brown as his defensive coordinator, but does not seem to match the qualities Arizona initially laid out as prerequisites for its next coach.

17. Terry Bowden, Louisiana-Monroe

Bowden’s time at Akron (2012-18) should give him a taste of what’s to come at ULM, which never led for a single second during the 2020 season. Is the 64-year-old former Auburn coach the right fit for a program that needs a complete reboot? In good news, you have to like Bowden’s addition of former West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez as offensive coordinator.
