I keep seeing people respond to the Microsoft Recall bullshit with there's an ability to disable it and that misses the point. Several points in fact.
It's only a matter of time until an update bugs/"bugs" it and re-enables it without warning so people who had previously disabled it think they're in the clear until their info is leaked or they get a warning they're low on storage space.
If people don't have admin rights, they may not be able to disable it. Laptops given by work or school lock down what people can do with them, some going as far as dictating which browser one has to use on them. Even if you don't need admin rights to disable Recall, you may not have the ability to do so without losing the laptop and/or job and/or education.
I'm unsure of how it would handle multiple accounts but if it can be locked by someone else to always be enabled, children and people in abusive situations would also be unable to disable it. Even if it can't be locked, disabling it could result in punishment from a parent or the abuser.
Is it really disabled or is it "disabled" in that what the user sees is it being disabled while it's still collecting information and/or sending information to Microsoft in the background?
Such a feature should never have been automatically enabled in the first place. It's bad, predatory design to have such a feature enabled from the start and to expect users AKA customers to go out of their way to look up and then opt-out of something.
If disabling it really disables it, it can still result in stress and concern that it's not. The vast majority of people do not have the skills or knowledge to look into the OS guts to give themselves peace of mind that it really truly is disabled.
I'm sure I'm missing some, too.
TLDR is disabling is a bandaid someone else may rip off for you, someone may hurt you if you use, it may not work at all except as a placebo, and should have never been needed in the first place.
#that's not even touching on the legal aspect where it existing at all violates laws for some regions/companies/governments#the ability to disable also doesn't matter if you're barred from ever disabling it in the first place#how long until parents start berating/grounding/beating their kid(s) for 'using up all the storage space'?#and if google's 'ai' is anything to go by recall will have limited use and get things wrong#while also being a privacy and safety nightmare#there's already a history feature in windows and your browser of choice (plus bookmarks in said browser)#to me this smacks of find a use for something they developed without having a use first#while also adding a way for employers to spy on/control workers at a time when working from home is much more common#because while some employers will ban it others will use it to spy on employees and require it be enabled#'if you don't want us to know your personal passwords don't use work computers for personal browsing or accounts'#but also don't use your personal devices or pee outside of designated pee breaks as recall won't trigger if you're in the same spot#can't even set up a slow scroll or anything because the screenshots will show them you were on the same page for however long

Just saw a video from a town where it's legally required that a head of house must own a gun, and it walked through the house of a guy with guns at the front door, in a secret compartment in the living room, and in a safe upstairs.
That's potentially the worst set of guns you could have.
#a criminal walks in and grabs the gun by the door like 'yo nice free gun'#meanwhile youre upstairs desperately trying to open the safe quickly and quietly#if you were interested in good home defense you'd be interested in good locks not good guns#'what if they go thru the window' if you're worried about that put iron bars on your window. safety#its an investment because youre obviously so paranoid you need the ability to kill your wife to protect you from home invaders#'oh but those bars will ruin the look of the neighborhood' then id say there's probably a low chance your home will be invaded

this is not the exact one I watched but I saw one of these "dish scape" things at someone's house who actually has TV (like they pay for dish/cable instead of just watching stuff online) and I think they're meant to be relaxing atmospheric stuff that you mostly ignore, but I sat there for 35 minutes watching absolutely engrossed.. further proof that I genuinely think my brain is incapable of experiencing boredom lol..
#IT'S BECAUSE there's so many little details that like you can spend minutes just scanning every corner of the image and taking it all in and#you keep finding new things! like 'oh I didn't know that blade of grass moved!' or 'I didnt see that bucket before!'. And then on top of#so many details - some things genuinely do change. The one I saw was a Beach house scene and sometimes a bird would fly by or ONE TIME kite#came out of nowhere. a sandcastle built and unbuilt itself. there's a firepit and it comes on when the sky changes from day to afternoon!!#this is like watching a sports game to me. I need weird detail oriented friends who will sit for 20 minutes staring at a barely moving pict#ure & cheer and clap with me when a seagull flies across the screen ghgj.. THERE HE IS!!!! etc!! and there's just so much to think about!!#Like how the images are layered or animated and the choices that were made (like I think the sunrise and sunset sky background images for t#e beachouse are just the same picture flipped and recolored) and trying to predict what's going to happen next (will the lights in the hous#turn off for night time? will another bird show up??) etc! I even got up at one point to walk close to the screen and get a better view of#hese paintings that were visible through the beachhouse windows. and then thinking about building a similar home in the sims! OR ALSO THIS#WOULD BE SUCH A COOL medium I think to tell a story! Like you upload a video to youtube that is framed just as a completely average moving#screensaver ambiance type of thing. It's like 7 hours long and mostly loops the same still image. However. over time at certain points you#can see some thing happen like watching characters interact through the windows. animals or people walk across the screen. certain elements#in the environment morph or change. etc. In such a way that an entire like plot is conveyed. maybe like fantasy mystery sort of thing. I WI#SH I could do this style of art / had friends who could or had money to pay somebody to. I would LOVE to collaborate on a weird surreal#It's Just Your Average Slowly Looping Moving Screensaver Video I Promise' type story.. jjhhgHH.. Or even just making one of these set in so#me of my fantasy world environments. not as a secret thing with easter eggs that tell a story but just literally an image like this tha#moves over time and etc. HHRRGRGHhhhhGG.. ANYWay!! I had to actually turn it off not because I was bored but because it was distracting me#. which is funny since again. I think for most people it's meant to be a 'just leave it on in the background' type of thing that's bland an#neutral . But it was just making me think too much ghjgh.. This is why I can't go to amusement parks or nightclubs bars or concerts like..#a moving screensaver image is too overstimulating to my brain. Could you imagine me going to an environment just full of sensory informatio#like loud noises poeple talking flashing lights etc. etc. ? hghghb... Visiting a grocery store at a slightly busy hour is like my upper lim#it... Anyway.. everything is just so interesting to me. Even if I was locked in a room alone I would have plenty to think about & amu#se myself. I am also a hater definitely like I'm a very analytical person who is critical of society and systems & everything that exists#and even generally am just very opionated and have distinct preferences - so just because everything is INTERESTING does not mean I LIKE or#enjoy everything or never get tired of/annoyed by situations or ideas or etc. But it's more just like.. I literally dont think I could ever#be bored because of the way my brain works and also I approach life with elements of childlike whimsy and constant obsessive curiosity and#attention to detail. so as much as I am an analytical bore I also love everything and the world is fascinating at all times. lol.. duality#of man. if you get it then you get it. #i guess you must need bars on the windows when you're That close to That particular train station#and it isn't even cheap..........#so i think ive adequately depressed myself by looking at places on realestate.com.au now#moving out is a pipe dream ill never buy a home and ill especially never buy a home with enough garden for my tomato plants#shits fucking dire out there lads#and all this to say - i also looked at the renting options and felt even sadder still bc that's obviously more likely than getting a house#but with what you're getting in renting you literally may as well be paying a fucking mortgage#and i don't think im That fussy or difficult?? i just think my wants are Very different to what's actually out there#my post tag

She's been sealed away and locked up and beaten down until she doesn't know which wa#Is up and still she perseveres. Courage is a bright flashing firework of danger and thrill.#Wisdom is a long hard slog through the worst moments of your life and making self destructive decisions because that's the only avenue left#Because your faith is balanced on the knifes edge of a near stranger child and his untested skills and unproven loyalty and unknown strengt#And totk zelda... There was one path open to her. A crazy one. She could have made a life for herself. A peaceful one.#But there was only one way that would allow her hope. And she gathered all the information. bugs LOVE the outside corners of my windows. the spiders are fun but i had to take care of so many paper wasps trying to build nests. The one window specifically i had to knock a nest out at least 8 times last summer. In the wasp's defense it is like a perfectly sheltered high up corner so i see the appeal. i tried like spraying mint/teatree in hopes it would keep them away but each spray only deterred them like a week or so.
#my windows arent very secure so they kept getting inside :'( nightmare#at one point i came home from work and in the time i was gone they started making a nest INSIDE the window#had to make an emotional support phone call for that one#i have a new window propping system (heavy duty tension bars) so hopefully i get less intruders this summer#also figured out in my fall cleaning that half the screens were in backwards which is why they were so loose#i thought they were just warped lol
