middle-aged toji who just grumbles and rolls his eyes when you tease him in public. he’s too lazy to pull you off his lap right now, and he’s not in the mood to argue with you. he leans back and watches you wiggle your hips, not bothering to fight the growing hardness in his pants. it’s past his bedtime, the music is too loud, and the drinks are shit. he lets you have your way for a bit, then drags you away—mirthfully announcing that your “old man” is too tired to hang. but the glint in his eyes tells you that the fun won’t be over quite yet; he’s going to deal with you once you get home.

have been in a qijiu/qiyuan mood lately, and i was thinking about an au where shen yuan, upon transmigrating, actually loses his memories. he wakes up and has no idea who he is, where he is, who the man at his bedside is. not a clue. the only thing he has is his muscle memory, his sharp recognition senses (he's experiencing a lot of déjà-vu), and blurry fractions of memories that he can't quite make out.
thing is, the memories of both shen yuan and shen jiu aren't actually gone, they start to intermingle, to mix up, a little sister in princess pajamas beside an older brother wearing dirty rags, a bright screen that displays mountain peaks and glittering caves. he's kind and generous the way someone who has never had to worry about food or money is, but he gets vicious and defensive when someone gets too close. sometimes he says cruel things and doesn't even understand why himself.
neither identity fits anymore, both names right and wrong at the same time. it's just... shen qingqiu.
and while everyone else might adjust to this just fine, yue qingyuan does not. because that is shen jiu, but it isn't, but it has to be, but not always. he gets flashes of his childhood friend when shen qingqiu gets viciously defensive over nothing, when he scowls and scoffs and rolls his eyes when he thinks people can't see, but then he smiles, and laughs, and tilts his head in a way that is completely foreign. he likes beasts. shen jiu never liked beasts. but he loves tanghulu, like shen jiu. sweet sugary things. the first time xiao jiu cuddles up into his hug, he cries.
the way he sometimes clings to yue qingyuan when he has a bad day can't be him, but then he says "qi-ge" exactly like shen jiu would and damn near snarls at anyone who gets too close, and he's aggressively possessive the way he was when they were kids. but then he pulls away and apologizes, like shen jiu would never do.
and he never demands anything, scrubbed clean from roughness and filth and selfish want, will act perfect and smiling and pleasant, never burdensome. like he's completely forgotten where he came from, what he was. like the pampered nobleman's son who could afford to be kind. the only time his old self comes fully back up is when he feels threatened or scared or angry, like a trauma response that kicks in to protect himself. and then yue qingyuan starts to wonder if maybe it is. maybe the shen jiu he knows was only ever fear and self-preservation, and the one he is now is a shen jiu without the chains and shackles and scars.
yue qingyuan doesn't know if he's happy for him, if it's for better or for worse. he does know that he feels protective and responsible for this new version xiao jiu has become.
meanwhile shen qingqiu, even when he regains enough of his memories to realize he was once a different person, doesn't know who he is anymore. both, maybe. or neither. he feels bad for taking away yue qingyuan's friend, but in his heart he can't help but think qi-ge is his brother, and no one else's. when he manages the peak he feels like he's taking credit for another's accomplishments, but he remembers suffering for it, he remembers what it took to get there.

“But think of the resale value!”
Listen, I am not paying a ridiculous mortgage amount every month just to treat my home like a fucking rental.
If I wake up one day and decide I want a giant hand-painted LOTR map on my bedroom wall, not even god himself could stop me from doing it.

Rory has recently discovered the clay ptarmigan that lives on my "dog don't touch" shelf and so now she checks on it multiple times a day and makes it known that she would like it in her mouth very much, please and thank you.

Hey all, I live in Appalachia, specifically Western NC, and Helene devastated us. Towns I live near are completely destroyed and I-40 is falling apart. There’s no cell service in my town. Many counties don’t have power, clean water, or internet access. Appalachia wasn’t built for this type of weather and it shows.  I evacuated while I had time and I’m safe with my parents, but I want to do SOMETHING to help since I can’t be there for my community. If you can provide me with a receipt of a US $5 donation or higher to any of the charities listed on this website I’ll draw something for you. Any art will be for personal use only and the more you donate the more I’ll make for you, but as long as you’ve donated I’ll give you something. God knows we need all we can get, keep Appalachia in your hearts (and prayers if you’re the praying type). Art examples are under the readmore if you wanna look.
Art examples go from least to most complex:

I kind of hate all the comparisons between kipperlily and like. Those fuckass "affirmative action fucks me over I wish I was [minority] so it would be easier" people because none of that. Is what she said. She said the bad kids already had more experience with adventuring before they got to augefort and it meant they had an advantage. Which is true. Yeah Riz was lower-class but his mum was a COP. Riz, Kristen and Fig had parents who were heroes (Sandra-Lynn is an active ranger, Kristen's parents are paladins, Sklonda is a rogue), Adaine's family was super rich and politically influential, Fabian had both. Gorgug's the only one who wasn't actively at an advantage [IN THE CONTEXT OF HAVING PRIOR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HEROISM] and she didn't have shit to say about him. Kipperlily was the first person in her family to try heroism, the bad kids are largely legacy admissions.
Additionally to the people comparing it to the "anti-affirmative action" crowd: do you know what affirmative action is. The bad kids didn't receive special consideration on their admissions to aguefort or scholarships or additional financial support or extended assessment times or anything. How could she be mad about affirmative action if none of these people received affirmative action. What they DID have was knowledge about their classes that started much earlier than high school, which is what Kipperlily said in her file that she thought grading should be adjusted for because she did not have that.
To me it's less like affirmative action and more like augefort is like an IQ test. They pretend that it's fair and objective, but you can be taught how to do those things from a younger age, and if your parents took the time to teach you pattern recognition and shit then you'll do better on an IQ test than someone who wasn't trained for it and everyone will act like that makes you innately smarter when it doesn't. It just means someone taught you how to do that earlier.
Barring Gorgug, every one of the bad kids had access to information about heroism and their class at a younger age than Kipperlily did, which primed them for success in their classes. Every one of them got additional information about mysteries from their families (and even direct battle-tactics training from Bill), Riz especially with getting classified info out of his mum. Kipperlily does not have hero relatives. She's the first in her family line to attend a hero school. She knew nothing about it before her first day, meanwhile Kristen was already the chosen of Helio, Adaine had already been attending the best wizard school in the country, Fabian had already spent his whole life training with his father, and Riz was already involved in solving mysteries using info and tactics he got from his parents.
They aren't necessarily "privileged" (except Fabian and Adaine), but Kipperlily didn't say they were, she said that in the specific context of attending a hero school they had a prior-knowledge advantage. Saying they didn't is like comparing the grades of a kid who's academic career started with preschool with a kid who didn't attend until middle school and acting like one of them wasn't better prepared.

Vacation is over. I had a nice time despite cold (low 70s), wind and even rain. All other times I've been to Mexico there was much sunshine and warmth.
I have got to give credit to the CBP, TSA, HS and local travel and border authorities. Each year my experience leaving and re-entering the country is better and better. Faster, too.
Years ago Customs guys were stern, sour people. I wasn't even wearing a North Korean hockey jersey or anything like that. We also had to do paperwork.
The guys were bordering (no pun intended) on being assholes. Many years ago in Miami after a cruise, one Customs agent laughed as his dog walked all over our suitcases that had been thrown on the floor of a warehouse. Welcome back to the US, dirtbags!
Over the last five to eight years I've felt I have been treated respectfully. The agents worked fast too. I suppose technology, like the facial recognition software helps. Entering Mexico and returning home I actually felt welcomed. There weren't any silly forms to complete either.
Sheila and I got home from the airport around 9PM. My body was tired, my brain was up for a party. I watched some TV and went to bed. It took me a while to fall asleep.
My usual priority after vacation is to get laundry done as quickly as possible. Last night I set the machine to start a load at 5 AM, so when I woke up I could start a second one right away. I don't like wet clothes staying overnight in the washer.
By 10 AM today I had all the laundry washed, dried, folded and put away. Until that was done, my first day back at work today felt like the worst Monday ever. Now I can relax.

the 50th arena likely being the only one that wasn't preserved for visitation due to how the capitol was played for fools is something that makes me laugh. believing that it would go off without a hitch, being a quarter quell. the bets are spun and tossed around, and money is spent in favor. the captiol splurges out on high-tech features of the decade and expects everything to go amazingly. to be marked in history as the most brutal year to come, with bodies pilled up higher than the mass grave can take.
and what they don't realize, is that little forcefield function right at the edge of the arena will come to haunt them forever. they don't know that a boy from the most down and out district, from the poorest part, will slice their dreams to shreds, one career's neck at a time — one step further to that cliff edge at a time. they don't know that he will look past their manufactured beauty, slip past the gore open up the arena's skin of potential, find its use outside of housing weapons.
they don't know that he will ally with a girl from the wealthier part of their district, and will hunt and stick together. and when she dies after they split up, he will comfort her: and he will hold her hand in gratitude of her allyship, and gentleness for how her life slips away from her. they don't know, that he will go toe to toe with the last career standing, a large girl with her eye hanging out of her socket because of him, while he runs limping with a slick bundle of intestines cradled in his hand.
they will not expect that boy to win. they will find that when he convulses, when the girl prepares her axe to throw for the kill, and he dodges — it will come back. and it will embed in a head of her own.
they will scramble to cut out parts of the games, blame it on a faulty camera ruined in the volcano explosion. they will hide their shame through delivered messages of confusion. they will then deal with that boy silently, like a knife to the throat.
