I am reading Homestuck for the first time
Homestuck Bookclub had to be delayed to Saturday this time, but we'll meet on Thursday this week! Inspired by my shining example, the other newcomer has begun taking notes. Unlike me, recording my thoughts, they're recording everything.
These are my notes from week 2, 215 through 537:
229: I wonder if Rose’s relationship to her mom isn’t going to be the foil I expected. Setting aside what Rose has said, her mom seems like she’s into more established, antiquated versions of what Rose is into, much like John and his dad. John doesn’t recognize the things he has in common with his father, not seeing the forest of “we both like goofy comedy” for the tree of “dad loves harlequins,” and seeing that aspect of his father in isolation, seeing it as something weird and foreign. John is frustrated with his dad, and that affects how he sees his dad and his actions. Rose seems to be interpreting a lot of what her mother does with irony and malice, but it’s easy to imagine something similar. What if Rose is frustrated for her mother, and sees the things they have in common as mockery instead of common ground?
246: I really thought the meteor would get stopped! Char told me sburb ended the world but didn’t say how or when, I kinda thought John and Rose might overcome this part.
251: Evangelion reference
272: Especially ethnic wedding??
278: It’s cute that John is visibly delighted when Rose grabs the copy of Sassacre’s.
303: Homestuck predicted bone hurting juice
311: I think I have heard Dave’s name more than John’s in all these years.
326: Holy shit 1:
Tumblr media
12: get my nacho on aAUUUH
34: I really like the UV weedcoin texture
43: David accidentally drew a face too well.
52: I’m actually watching the character David is playing become a better artist
54: I’m not caught up on Prequel, I’m not caught up on Homestuck, but by god, I am caught up on Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff.
331: The little guy doesn’t have a weapon, he’s just getting the shit beat out of him.
338: testing my senses using every button.
362: Further evidence for Rose’s mom actually being cool.
369: You can’t show me this sequence and tell me these two don’t feel deep love for one another. Those definitely were a lot of liquor bottles but I’m ignoring those to support my theory.
382: Dave is the only one who doesn’t seem to avoid his family. Dude seems to really look up to his brother.
421: I appreciate John’s dad in this 2v1. Sure he lost but clearly he was kicking ass up to that point. They can’t even get close to him.
440: Strong suspicion Rose’s kernel will be prototyped with her cat.
442: GG agrees with my strong suspicion and also seems to be able to see the future.
509: I bet this guy’s a shadow demon
510: Real high horse about racist aphorisms ms “especially ethnic wedding”
522: Dave the PC term is “My own personal 9/11”
523: CAPTCHA!? CAPTCHALOGUE!?

[re: me pointing out in the tags that Roy acquired stigmata in bhood/manga story] #prev tags not only did Roy get stigmata he also (previously) got impaled (by Lust’s finger spears) in his side#like that man’s wounds literally echo the wounds of Christ#I feel like probably a coincidence tho#cause firstly I imagine that while arakawa is aware of Christian symbolism#it isn’t (afaik) as culturally prominent and so baked into everything in Japan that it would be present in her work w/o being deliberate#and if there is any deliberate Christ figure in fma it’s definitely Ed not Roy#like I love Roy he is my ultimate blorbo and I am obsessed with him#but I gotta admit he’s not a (deliberate) Christ allegory (via poorpoorpitifulme)
yeah my thoughts basically align. To elaborate though b/c you've given me an excuse:
probably depends on who you talk to but according to wikipedia the spear wound is also included in stigmata! So yeah i was referring to the Promised Day stuff *and* Lust's attack
Arakawa did research about European culture & historical alchemy mysticism (she jokes about it in the omakes). I think she chose a lot of minor worldbuilding details to "feel" more European than Japanese (to me at least), and it sticks out because the 2003 anime reversed some of them - for example Ed eating dango on a train in episode 10. I don't think you ever see dango or other Japanese snack foods in the manga (though it's been a while since i read, so i'm not sure)
One place in Japanese culture where Christian symbolism *is* pretty prominent in post-Evangelion anime, and that absolutely applies to FMA. I think the Evangelion influence is much more prominent in the 2003 anime than the manga (I had a whole list of possible NGE references in the old anime, i wonder if I could dig that up) -- but one example in manga/Brotherhood is Robert Fludd's Tree of Life woodblock on Ed's Door of Truth-- the same design is prominent in the Evangelion OP. I've also seen it turn up in other anime though (e.g. Black Clover) so idk maybe it's just well-known in Japan?
That said, agreed there's a lot more Christ-figure comparisons to be made with Ed (once again, even moreso in the old anime, like holy shit guys)
And the old anime (more possibly-Christian references & plot) didn't give any of these wounds to Roy. Like, Lust has this whole subplot with Scar, she didn't even fight Roy as far as I remember. So, stigmata? Intentional? Coincidence? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
anyways agreed Roy is one of the blorbos of all time 👍
fullmetal alchemist fans will say shit like 'tbh him getting impaled was one of my favorite moments in the story' and they will be talking about their beloved protagonist.

Amusing Himself to Death, an Akadot.com interview with Kazuya Tsurumaki (director of FLCL and assistant director of Evangelion) from around December 2001. In the article, Tsurumaki explains a few things about Evangelion, his mentality behind FLCL as a whole, and the meaning of the name ‘FLCL’.
Full article text is under the cut, or read the article in its original form [here].
Kazuya Tsurumaki was a relatively little-known animator when Hideki Anno selected him to work as the assistant director on Neon Genesis Evangelion. For the TV series, which became a smash hit in Japan and one of the touchstones of the current surge of interest in anime in the US, Tsuramaki served as the main storyboard artist as well as assistant director, and when Studio Gainax began production on a trio of Evangelion films Tsurumaki got his first directorial assignment.
As he tells the story, Anno came to him after Eva and announced that he was out of ideas and that it was up to Tsurumaki to dream up the next project because, "you are next." Tsurumaki let his imagination run wild, but by the time he had written a script, Anno - despite his declaration that he had no stories left to tell - was already several steps ahead of Tsurumaki and in pre-production for his next series, Kareshi Kanojo no Jijo, leaving Tsurumaki a chance to have complete and unsupervised creative control of his own series FLCL.
FLCL, referred to as "Fooly Cooly" (or "Furikuri" by its American fans), is unlike any anime series to come before it. Wild, maniacally fast-paced physical comedy; exaggerated, exuberant animation alternately pushing towards surrealist- as when mecha exuviate from a bump on young Naota's head - and deconstructionist - as when the animation literally stops and the story is told by a camera bouncing across a page of black and white manga art panels; and obsessively, often irrelevantly, referential to obscure Tokyo-pop bands and anime insider trivia; FLCL was hyperkinetic and disorienting, yet mesmerizing, almost transgressive, and undeniably original. It inspired enthusiastic admiration for Tsurumaki as a creator, even amongst the perhaps 90% of the series' fans who were absolutely baffled by much of it. One is tempted to refer to it as announcing the arrival of full blown post-modernism in animation, or perhaps as the Exploding Plastic Inevitable of the anime industry.
When Tsurumaki visited Baltimore to speak to American fans at the recent Otokon Convention, predictably, many of the questions were along the lines of, "Hi, I really loved FLCL [or Evangelion], but could you please explain this part of it to me?"
Tsurumaki answered all questions genially with a self-deprecating and often mischievous sense of humor. For example:
Why does Haruko hit Naota over the head with her guitar?
Kazuya Tsurumaki: Naota is trying to be a normal adult and she belts him to make him rethink his decision.
Why does Evangelion end violently, and somewhat unhappily?
KT: People are accustomed to sweet, contrived, happy endings. We wanted to broaden the genre, and show people an ugly, unhappy ending.
Why is the character of Shinji portrayed as he is?
KT: Shinji was modeled on director Hideki Anno. Shinji was summoned by his father to ride a robot, Anno was summoned by Gainax to direct an animation. Working on Nadia [Nadia: Secret of the Blue Water, one of Anno and Tsurumaki's earlier projects] he wondered if he still wanted to work like this. He thought that working on Eva could help him to change.
Is there any particular reason why so many Gainax series feature very anxious, unhappy young male protagonists with no parents?
KT: Yes, the directors at Gainax are all basically weak, insecure, bitter, young men. So are many anime fans. Many Japanese families, including my own, have workaholic fathers whose kids never get to see them. That may influence the shows I create.
Could you explain the mecha bursting from Naota's head in FLCL?
KT: I use a giant robot being created from the brain to represent FLCL coming from my brain. The robot ravages the town around him, and the more intensely I worked on FLCL the more I destroyed the peaceful atmosphere of Gainax.
Why doesn't FLCL follow one story?
KT: In the third episode Ninamori was almost a main character, a kid who, like Naota, has to act like an adult.  After episode three her problem was solved so we wrote her out.  She has many fans in Japan and we got plenty of letters about that decision.  For FLCL I wanted to portray the entire history of Gainax, and each episode has symbols of what happened behind the scenes on each of Gainax's shows.   Episode one has many elements of Karekano; episode two, a lot of Evangelion references, etc.
Where does the title FLCL come from?
KT: I got the idea from a CD in a music magazine with the title Fooly-Cooly.  I like the idea of titles that are shortened long English words. Pokémon for "Pocket-Monsters" for instance, and an old J-pop band called Brilliant Green that was known as "Brilly-Grilly."
Is there any reason why the extra scenes added to Eva for the video release were cut in the first place?  Did you think the story would mean something different with them intact?
KT: The scenes that were added to Eva for its video release aren't that important.  We added them as an apology for taking so long to get the video out.  Maybe they'll help people understand things, because the episodes were done under tough deadlines the first time around.
Can you explain the symbolism of the cross in Evangelion?
KT: There are a lot of giant robot shows in Japan, and we did want our story to have a religious theme to help distinguish us.   Because Christianity is an uncommon religion in Japan we thought it would be mysterious.  None of the staff who worked on Eva are Christians.  There is no actual Christian meaning to the show, we just thought the visual symbols of Christianity look cool.  If we had known the show would get distributed in the US and Europe we might have rethought that choice.
After the panel, Mr. Tsurumaki sat down to speak with Akadot.
Do you enjoy confusing people?
KT: I have a twisted sense of humor.  I'm an Omanu Jacku, a contrarian.  [Writer's note- Omanu Jacku is a folk character a bit like Puck, a mischief maker]
What do you see differently now that you're working as a director rather than only as a visual artist?
KT: As an animator I have only the art; as a director story is really big.  I still feel as an animator and I often have trouble putting the needs of the story first.
Did you intend from the start for FLCL to be as bizarre as it wound up?
KT: From the very start I wanted a different flavor.  To achieve this I had to re-train the animators to be as stylized as I wanted them to be because I wasn't drawing it.  I knew that not everyone would get it.  I deliberately selected very obscure J-pop culture and anime sub-culture jokes and references.  Because Eva was so somber I always intended to make FLCL outrageous and wacky.
Why the choice to break out of conventional animation and use manga pages? Was it at all a response to how many anime are using computers to achieve smoother and more realistic visuals?  Were you trying to go the opposite direction?
KT: I like manga, not only to read, but the visuals.  The pen drawings, the frame breakdowns and layouts . . . This is the first time I have used digital animation, and those bouncing manga shots wouldn't have been possible with cel animation.   Personally I'm not interested at all in using computers for realistic animation.  I'm impressed by it sometimes, but I'm interested in using computers to do what was once impossible, not to do smoother versions of what has already been done.  I want to be less realistic.
Has using digital animation techniques changed the way you work, or the way you feel about your work when you see it?  Does it still feel like it's yours if a computer did much of it?
KT: Before I got into digital animation I saw other shows that were using it and I felt that there was no feeling, it was empty.   As an animator, there's a sense of release when you draw a cel.  There's something there.  Working on FLCL, though, I learned that computers can do more, and, most of all, that they allow room for trial and error and revising, more freedom to experiment.  That is why I now feel that cel art cannot win against computers.  For actual animation everything is still drawn on paper.  That work hasn't changed.  It's the other stuff, the touchups, and coloring.  If we didn't use paper, maybe the feeling would change.
Earlier today you said that you were trying to broaden the genre by giving Eva a sad ending.  Does the sameness of much of today's anime bore you?
KT: First of all we didn't use a sad ending to annoy fans.  When they're upset, that really bothers us.  Personally, I think a happy ending is fine, but not if it is achieved too easily.  That's no good.
For all the fans that are confused at all, if you had to define in one sentence what FLCL is about, what would you say?
KT: FLCL is the story of boy meets girl.  For me it is also about how it's ok to feel stupid.  With Evangelion there was this feeling that you had better be smart to understand it, or even just to work on it. With FLCL I want to say that it's okay to feel stupid.
Even though it may be strange to us, do you have in your head a logic behind it?  Are you trying to portray a story that follows the logic of dreams, or is it supposed to make sense symbolically?
KT: I'd like you to think of FLCL as imagination being made physical and tangible, just as it is for me when I take whatever is in my head and draw it.
So what are you working on next?
KT: Right now Gainax has told me that they'll support anything I choose to create, but I'm having trouble coming up with any ideas.
Why is that?
KT: Releasing titles for market, I know I have to make something to please fans, but I'm not a mature enough person to accept that fact.  If I'm not amusing myself I can't do it.  I feel bad that fans have to put up with such behavior from me.  I apologize.

My manga reading list (for personal reference. Will edit.)
Jojos bizzare adventure pt. 1-7 -Completed
Jojolion -caught up (ch 105)
Berserk -caught up (ch 363)
Fist of the north star - abandoned after Raoh died. Didnt care enough about the characters to stick around after the time skip.
Parasyte - completed - loved the concept and the dynamics, but didnt feel satisfied with the ending
Made in abyss -Reccomended by friend. Had difficulty getting into. Artstyle was offputting to me
Neon Genesis Evangelion -completed. Should have warched the anime. There was a lot of subtext i missed because of the manga
Pupa - completed. First half makes you think its a cool story about struggling against cosmic horrors and shaddow organizations. Second half is just gross fetish shit. Do not reccomend.
Gantz - completed. Wish the vampires were a more relevant plot point. I liked the final arc even if the final chapters werent very satisfying.
Chainsaw Man - competed. Holy shit every chapter was like a slap to the face. Loved every pannel of it. Cannot wait for the anime.
Fire punch - finished. Not as good as CSM but still a good experience. Much darker than expected. Had several unnerving scenes.
Attack on titan - lost interest in early in the anime. Simply didnt care about the characters. May enjoy more in manga format.
Please share more reccomendations with me

uhm so im not sure if youre still doing the ✨ thing. so ignore this if you arent!! but... ✨ and my tag is “my art” .... i just do a bunch of fan art basically, because im too embarrassed to post my fanfic since its all incredibly self indulgent self insert stuff, and my OP oc is a complete mary sue 🙈 ive been considering starting a writing blog where i post my self insert fics & take requests but im afraid nobody will like my writing since i only just started again after years of not writing 🙈
First of all - I am so honored that such an amazing and talented artist as you is following me and decided to write to me and ^excited Bas noises^ I am scrolling your tag up and down and oh my god, let me tell you, it was a hard choice - all of your art is simply breathtaking  (ノ´ヮ`)ノ*: ・゚
About the writing part - I know the struggle, before I’ve started writing I had a few years break and to add a language barrier (I’m Polish) to it... Well, if it wasn’t for a writing contest held by one of my favorite writers, I’d probably never find courage to do it. What can I say? You never know how people will react on your fics, if you won’t give it a try. Of course I don’t want to put pressure on you, but I’d gladly read your writings! Yes, even self indulgent self inserts and Mary Sue OCs (btw, it’s incredibly hard to write Mary Sue for One Piece, so I highly doubt your OC is a MS! Besides, this term is so overused I saw perfectly fine characters called MS for some reason (ง ื▿ ื)ว ). A lot of us writers create self-inserts, either as OCs or self-shipping (yes, even huge and popular blogs; I used to have some self-shipping writings here before one Anon triggered my anxiety - they will be back tho). There is no shame in it, it’s a normal writing process and way of emotional coping :)
Okay, but to the main topic:
✨ We Are! - aka the art I’ve started following you for, the colors, the composition, Zoro, Robin - especially ROBIN, holy shit I adore her in your artstyle! - everything is perfect here and I simply can’t stop staring at it T^T
✨ GANTZ - I don’t even know Gantz, but this fanart immediately grasped my attention. Simple, contrastive color pallette and design that for some reason made me think of Sin City (I know Frank Miller is... Um... rather controversial, but I like the artistic concept of his).
✨ everyones favorite angel - once again, I know Evangelion only from very vague memes, but HOLY SHIT I fell in love with this composition and the reference to religious art  ( ´ ▽ ` ).。o♡
✨ O Captain! My Captain! - I melted. I simply melted. I think I already said somewhere I have a special place in my heart for zolu and for soft Zoro - and here in addition there is excellent color choice. And the pieta reference... My heart!
✨ (0)The Fool - because I’m an absolute slut towards the art and symbolism of tarot. Besides, once again my favorite color pallette + perfect choice of character for the topic!
Thank you for trusting me and sorry for the wait! I hope you will find courage and share your writing with the world the same way as you shared your magnificent art  (♡°▽°♡)

What do you think of neon genesis evangelion overall?
so here’s some background
the only thing i knew about eva for years is that it’s very popular, has robot stuff with some dude named shinji (who has a thing with 90s komaeda), and is mainly joked about now. i watched the first episode on vhs when i was a kid, otherwise i knew nothing about what it actually was outside of like, early 2010s abridged references and memes i couldn’t understand.
but the ONE vibe i DID get from it is that, if i did try to learn more, i would get sadder. like i was firmly in the periphery of nge and i could feel some kind of weird melancholy vibing in my direction, especially since i was aware that the creator was heavily depressed and miserable for parts of production. and as someone who gets very easily into media with deep symbolism, tragedy, and character depth, i made sure to actively avoid learning more about the show. and it served me well until around last week when i stumbled upon a scene from eva and thought well i might as well watch it.
it was asuka’s fight scene from the end of evangelion. i had no story context for it, i had no idea what was happening. but jesus the entire thing hit me like a train so i scrambled to find context for it. long story short i learned about the famous last parts of eva where the philosophy shit gets cranked to 100 and now i’m sitting here listening to komm susser tod on repeat and feeling hollow inside
maybe it’s the uniqueness of my perspective, but after all this i actually have a newfound admiration for eva’s writing and a newfound confusion for all the meme humor around it. i get that people use humor to cope and it’s been decades, but i really can’t muster the strength to joke about any of this after i’ve let it overwhelm me for a few days.
i don’t have thoughts on the rebuilds or the first 1-24 episodes, since i haven’t watched those and don’t feel the need to. but even though there’s a lingering disgust i have for the flagrant sexualization of young girls in the show (and in the merchandise, like holy christ your ‘best girl’ is a middle schooler with a complex) as well as…. certain decisions, overall i can understand why the show was so impactful. maybe i’m just a sucker for deconstruction, religious symbolism, philosophy, psychology, the effects of trauma, etc. eva hits a lot of my ‘depressing introspection into the human condition’ interests. head full. many thoughts.
