Review: myah delivers with new clean and angsty alt-pop single ‘the lobby’, exploring a messy avoidant relationship

Continually hitting the mark with her previous hits ‘familiar’ and debut ‘hide’, upcomer myah has quickly made a name for herself. As a dominant indie-pop force that’s always shifting between new sounds, her works channel the deepest of her emotions in the most digestible of tunes. Now sharing something refreshingly new, ‘the lobby’ shines as perhaps myah’s boldest move yet.

Opened with softened acoustic guitar plucks, some slightly out of tune as though myah were curled on her bedroom floor discovering the riff for the first time, ‘the lobby’ instantly feels intimate and warm. A fuzzy voicemail voice speaks ‘I miss you’ atop it, an opening that sets the scene for a clearly aching split. As the riff finds its footing, the careful acoustic guitar and shaken percussion take the lead for an upbeat but down-to-earth soundscape, keeping that personal feel while pushing forwards with ease. Echoey backing vocals only further add to this catchiness, a chant-along feel that’s built upon with pounding bass twangs, layers of backing voices and harmonised vocal ooh’s. myah’s vocals take the lead through it all, a dainty and agile performance that dances through hurting spoken-sung lines and gorgeous highs.

As the chorus beats through a raw shift of gritty electric guitar strums, thumping drums and an eccentric riff, ‘the lobby’ merges between the clean, ease-filled verses and an angsty chorus. myah’s words are still as rich and airy as always, an elegant performance to front a moment that otherwise feels harsh and emotional, perhaps covering as a facade in a moment of profound pain.

Parodying her exes movies through both her music video and lyricism, ‘the lobby’ delivers a commentary on Hollywoood, fame, love, and ultimately heartbreak as myah explores her own messy relationship in front of the world. Opening with the admission ‘remember when you said you missed me? well I missed you too’ , myah explores the difficulty of moving forwards, still lingering a little on what once was. Continuing ‘I’m out, ‘cause I hate this town’ , it seems as though myah has lost her reason to stay, leaving a place that was shared between them. Singing ‘remember when you said you cared… now he’s too busy to commit, ‘cause I’m not rich or vain’, myah explores more of this avoidant partnership and their focus on more materialistic values. Through this scarring lack of commitment and confusion, ‘the lobby’ really feels like one of those disastrous rom-coms but without quite the same happy ending you’d expect.

Gene is not having this nonsense, guys! 😉 A "No Dancing Law"!!! This cannot stand. 🤨 It looks like there's only one solution...Jerry the Mouse is gonna have to learn how to dance. I know that sounds hard, but don't worry...Gene's been doing this for years. I'm confident that he can teach that cartoon mouse to boogie. 🤭 Aside from being wildly entertaining, this number was quite the technological feat, in it's day. Although the concept was originally turned down by Disney, Gene persisted...approaching "Tom & Jerry" creators, Hanna & Barbera, who agreed to help. After Gene's dance was filmed, the animators used a technique called rotoscoping (in which they transferred images from a live action film, to another film). This allowed them to painstakingly match the animated character's movement to Gene's, even down to creating the shadows on the floor. I think it's worth noting that the entire animation for this sequence was the work of three men...Kenneth Muse, Ray Patterson and Ed Barge. What talented individuals. 🙌 It's also interesting to note, that Gene had to work quickly to finish this film, because he was about to leave for his service in the U.S. Navy (he enlisted in 1944). It's a real credit to all those involved, that this number is just as magical today, as it was almost 80 years ago. 🥰 "Jerry The Mouse" & Gene Kelly, in "Anchors Aweigh" (1945). 💕

TFATWS is in a way about killing. There is put emphasize on different characters when they kill. Bucky is plauged by his past as an assasian. Yet there is not a single line about Sam about it. I do sort of feel like they are trying to say something about killing but Sam kills alot of people and never talks about it. He shows no remorse. Bucky have a speach about murder and Sam is basically a killing machine.

Gene loved dogs, and he was very sweet with them. In an interview, when asked about his first love, Gene replied that it was a stray dog who followed him home (when he was a small child) and never left. 🥺 So precious. 🐶 Incidentally, this was the first film that Gene made, after his return from military service (he was in the Navy, during World War II). Interestingly, in addition to being a romantic comedy, it also addressed issues (such as housing shortages) facing returning soldiers and their families. 🤍 Gene Kelly & his furry friend, in "Living In A Big Way" (1947). 💕
