Holiday Science Book Recommendations
Looking for science books for the holidays for yourself or others? Here are some that I’ve loved that I don’t see often recommended
Basic Optics and Optical Instruments By Naval Education and Training Program Development Center
Might not look like much but this is perhaps the single best book I’ve ever read about optics. If you have even a passing interest in lasers, rainbows, lens, telescopes (or submarine maintenance) I’d highly recommend giving this book a read. It definitely the best written book I’ve encountered for the topic, significantly better than most textbooks on the topics
A lot of books written by and for the navy are some of the most comprehensive and well-written books on a given topic
Get a copy
The Cartoon Guide to Physics by Larry Gonick and Art Huffman
A book for all ages, I read this book when I was in elementary school and again recently and it remains as charming and informative as ever. Great for children or just anyone more inclined to learn visually
Get a copy
A Man on the Moon by Andrew Chaikin
America has landed on the moon not once, but many times with multiple Apollo Missions. Ever wonder what the astronauts were doing up there?
Get a copy
Have a lovely holiday season! ❄️ ⛄️

I'm going to affectionately compare this to red white and royal blue, but just know it frustrates me when books are compared exclusively along similar plot points. This is two "rival" nations And two princes falling in love and a PR nightmare. But the tone is also similar to red white royal blue. The reverence with which love is spoken, the desire to do something more and better, to undo the mistakes of the past and build something more with the future. The sibling and friend relationships. So much of what I loved about rwrb is also in this.
The prince of Christmas is a fuck up who finds out he isn't as messed up as he thought, who grows into his good ideas and learns to stand on what he believes, which is anticapitalist, anti comidification of holiday and traditions. He fights to get back to when many traditions could all exist in their fullness, and I like that a lot. He learns hes worthy of love.
The king of Halloween married the Queen of Dia de los muertos, and I like the aspects of both that were brought in through their son, the prince of mischief and finding joy in hard times. The prince who loves ofrendas and reconnecting to those passed. The prince who can't swear without magically producing a jack-o'-lantern. Who isn't above using a little magic to tease a friend. Who is fiercely devoted to his duty, but learns to find love anyway.
These two are silly and mischievous and sickenly cute together. A great read, one I will want to revisit every year when the weather starts to turn towards fall and winter.

Its #BatAppreciationDay so please appreciate this awesome 19th century Japanese kosode decorated with embroidered lucky bats, photographed in 2019 at The Life of Animals in Japanese Art exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in DC:
Kosode with Bats Japan, Edo - Meiji periods, 19th century silk twill, paste-resist dyed, embroidery, 67⅜ × 48⅞ in. National Museum of Japanese History, Chiba Prefecture
“In the West, bats - nocturnal in habit and denizens of dark places tend to be viewed as unlucky, but in China they have long been considered an auspicious motif (one of the characters used to write the word "bat" is a homonym for good fortune). The Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjüro VII (1791-1859) used bat motifs in his costumes, and the perception of these animals as a chic design element spread rapidly throughout Japan in the nineteenth century. Here a great number of them are arranged in right-left symmetry from the base of the collar to the hem.”
The above info is from the official exhibition catalog - this bat kosode is on p. 124:

Just a friendly FYI if you’re a fan of one Mr. Joshua Jackson:
He worked on the audiobook for “Canadian Boyfriend” by Jenny Holiday, and it is AMAZING! Funny, angsty, sweet and sexy at times.
Treat yo’self.
