Anchors, away.

So today I wondered what exactly it was that could be holding me back from God. What is it in my life that prevents me from loving Him precisely how He has asked me to? You might've wondered this too. I made a list, not only of things that hold me back, but what holds the majority of society back from He Who Is.

I think for women, the biggest wall of distraction is the desire to be loved. Women love to be loved, to be wooed, and to be wanted, appreciated, cared for...died for. It's so easy to allow that thought of silent desperation- the classic, "no one loves me" creep into our convoluted minds. Why do we do this? Because we're as blind as a bullfrog....It's certainly not because we recognize the absolute self-sacrifice of Our Lord in heaven Who loves us more than any creation on the face of this immeasurable universe. Nah, if we knew that, we would never doubt that we were loved or cared for, or suffered for. Never.

The second biggest thing for a girl in today's chaos called society, is, in my opinion, makeup and jewelry and fashion. These all lead into the first mentioning up yonder ^. Because we bend ourselves backwards to be beautiful (of course since we think we won't be loved otherwise), this distracts us even. further. from the One is sounding a deafening cry to our hearts proclaiming the only Love that will fulfill.

I find nothing wrong with these three things within reason. They are used to enhance the beauty of a woman, and because the beauty of woman is so helpful in fulfilling God's divine will, then bring on the femininity! But girls, come on. Does an obsession with these things sound like God's plan for us? Too much of anything is...a bad thing. Unless we're talking about God, cause in that case you could fill the ocean with Him and it still wouldn't be enough. Back to my story: Not only does less makeup and fashion save mu-la (which is important for many young, responsible women these days), but it also saves time that we could spend beautifying our souls. Furthermore, think of how mainstream makeup is. You think of the most famous woman in Hollywood, and you look at how much makeup she wears. Is she really comfortable with who she is? Do we really need to imitate the cake of foundation dispersed among our pores to look beautiful? No! Mary, the mother of God, was the most perfect female on earth and she didn't need makeup to become Who God intended her to be. As innocent as fashion and makeup can be, the devil can take those novelties and easily turn them into necessities. Once these become necessities, look at that giant wall covering your view of God's love. Can you not trust the maker of your eyes and the molder of your features? Use the gifts He's given us, but don't abuse them, ladies.

For me, personally, food is a huge thing that separates me from God. My inability to gain weight is a curse in some ways. I can (for now, at least) eat whatever I like and never count the cost. Because I drive so much for my job, I pass every restaurant ever thought of, and this is comparable to a dark alley for druggies. Stopping at a fast food restaurant has never been easier, and I find myself never hungrier...all the time. Recently I've managed to forgo any and all fast food, but you never know when the devil will want to tempt for the fun.

The internet is another huge for almost anyone. This tool can be utilized for so much good, but also such unimaginable bad. If all the time that we spend online was spent praying rosaries, how much closer to heaven would we find ourselves? Facebook is literally only three clicks away for me. And now people carry the internet in their pockets, so not only to distract themselves from time with God, but also with everyone else around them. I've said many times: The most attractive person in the room is the one attentive of those around them, aware of their surroundings, and capable of being approached and engaged in any conversation. All three of these are cut off once a phone is pulled out.

Those are the big ones, and I certainly hope that as a woman, I can avoid all of them. Simply because, God is worth giving all of that up. He doesn't ask me to, but He is worth. Will I never wear makeup again? No, I can wear makeup, I am a woman. I can wear cute clothes, I am a woman. I can have a social life, I am human. But God asks us to keep those things in check, to make sure they aren't the primary source of our "happiness", for our own good. Only God is true happiness, true love, true beauty, true sustenance,  and true friendship. Let's let what weighing us down disappear. Our anchors must go so we can reach our full potential as future saints.
