You don’t know what makes you do it. Or, you know, of course you know— wildness of a good show, well done recklessness kindling a punchy fire in your gut and him, swirling in the basins and cavities of your body, in between all your cracks like a haunted origami house.

He lives there, has lived there for three years; scaffolding each other, same-level weirdness, communing, tussling, skirting a circle’s never-end. Knees touching like hands held across the world, cranking out identity-structural foundations and saying things like your love is standing next to me.

His eyes liquefy, almost-black against all that pale, a string’s tangle-hold between you—your pinky to his, and you think the string is red as the inside of his mouth.

You want to find out but he beats you to it, tugs that string toward him and you go, punch-drunk cherries in your cheeks until mouths quick as carnivals—there and gone in a Paris summer—you met under small-morning stars to speak in code, unfastened hand-strung hearts and gave them to each other.

He gives you a little tap over yours, now, as if saying ready? and you nod, still reeling from a hitch in his breath for your delectation, an unintentional exhilaration of life’s little vexes left for you like a gift.

2016

He puts his arm around your neck, fist pressed close to your throat, and you forget where you are— your eyes roll back in your head like two little marbles with a mind of their own.

For a split second you’re in his bed, against a wall, on the floor—doesn’t matter— lashes fluttering, you see red behind your eyelids, a nownownow kind of languid urgency contradictory in its creases and sighs.

You could slide down his body to the floor right now and he’d let you do it, dreamy-eyed close-up jumping through hoops to be together, elaborately glazed gazes and gagging for it in front of thousands—laugh-track foreplay all curves from the get-go, thighs and hips and rolling eyes under dimmable lights.

Fanfare; strangers screaming your names jolts you from tongue-tied reveries of early-morning body-warmed sheets, graceful flicking wrists, gilded eyes hazy and you, flayed apart by your own name said low in your ear honey-sweet.

You are cloud-bound, invincible, but even the best boys must come back down from catchable paradise.
