“Samidoun Is a Collective Act “ - On the Futility of Repressing Palestinian Organization

In this episode we interview Mohammed Khatib and Thomas Hofland from the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network.

This is our third interview with members of Samidoun since October 7th 2023, and we will link the others in the show description.

Mohammed Khatib is a Palestinian refugee from Ain el-Helweh camp in Lebanon. He lives in Belgium and is the European coordinator for Samidoun.

Thomas Hofland is the coordinator of Samidoun Netherlands.

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network organizes solidarity with Palestinian political prisoners and their struggle for freedom and liberation. The network was founded in 2011 and since then expanded to more than a dozen countries.

As Samidoun write, “On October 15, the United States and Canada sanctioned Samidoun in an attempt to repress political organizing in support of the Palestinian people’s struggle against genocide, colonialism and occupation, and the more than 10.000 Palestinian political prisoners that are being tortured and killed by the Zionist entity. In the US, the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced the sanctions, while the Canadian government has listed Samidoun as a “terrorist entity” under its criminal code.” (See full release here)

November 14th Charlotte Kates - the international coordinator for Samidoun who we’ve previously interviewed on two occasions - had her house raided by Vancouver Police in British Columbia. While there is no official statement on this matter yet by Samidoun, we just want to say that we denounce this escalating repression on the Palestinian movement, and send our solidarity to Charlotte and her family, and to Samidoun and to all people who have been organizing on behalf of the Palestinian people who are facing repression by these imperialist genocide supporting states.

Nothing reveals the nature of the imperialist countries we live in, in the so-called global north, like the fact that as states like the US, Canada and Western European countries provide billions of dollars in arms to the genocidal zionist garrison that calls itself Israel that they also have to suppress civil society organizations like Samidoun who advocate for the political prisoners held by that same genocide enacting garrison.

In this interview we get into how Samidoun understands these repressive actions and how we collectively can and must fight back as the state’s efforts to quell support for Palestinians amid the attempts by western governments to complete their genocidal siege and ethnically cleanse the Palestinian people in Gaza.

As the interview mentions, Samidoun is part of the Masar Badil – The Palestinian Alternative Revolutionary Path Movement. The Masar, founded in 2021, aims to organize and support the Palestinian diaspora as a crucial force of the national liberation struggle.

And as the interview mentions while these restrictions may prevent folks in some places from being able to materially support Samidoun as an organization, what you can do is continue to “Support the steadfastness of Palestinian people in Gaza by all means” and “Practice your right to resist.”

Royal Warrants

Royal Warrant Holders or Purveyors to the Court are companies or individuals who provide a good or service to the royal court. Not all companies the royal buy items from are issued royal warrants and just because a company has one doesn't mean that they are the exclusive supplier of that product. The companies chosen are usually older and have a history of working with the royal family. Each country has a slightly different set of rules but in most of them the warrants have to be renewed on a regular basis and can be revoked at any time.

I only included countries that I could find a list for like I know Spain issues royal warrants but I can't find a list of them. Some abolished monarchies like Romania still issue royal warrants and some countries like Japan and Norway don't issue them anymore despite still being monarchies.

United Kingdom - Royal Warrant Holders - Over 800 - In the UK, royal warrants are issued from individuals not by the court as a whole. In the past the monarch, consort, and heir have been able to grant them and some companies may have a warrant from multiple people at once. They are good for two years after the grantor passes away so at the moment there are some from Queen Elizabeth II (686 total) and the Duke of Edinburgh (38 total) that are up in the air. I expect King Charles (159 already) will issue new warrants to replace some given by his parents but not all of them. The only jeweler that does not already have one from him is G. Collins & Sons who were QEII's personal jewelers.

Derty Hofland had always been a bit of an oddball. Most people in their small town of Clementsburg thought of him as an eccentric old man who lived in a dilapidated cabin in the woods. He was rarely seen in town, and if he was, he was usually in an old, ratty flannel shirt and overalls. He kept to himself and rarely interacted with the townsfolk, so he was often thought of as mysterious by the locals.

One day, a group of kids decided to take a walk in the woods and explore the area around Derty's cabin. As they approached, something strange began to happen. The trees seemed to part and make a path leading up to the cabin. As they got closer, they could hear strange music coming from inside and see a faint orange glow emanating from the windows.

The kids cautiously approached the cabin and peered through the windows. Inside was Derty, dancing and playing strange music on an old fiddle. He seemed to be in his own world, oblivious to the kids watching.

The kids were mesmerized by Derty's strange performance and they stayed for the duration of his song. When he had finished, he looked up and saw the kids standing outside. He smiled and nodded, before inviting them inside.

The kids were stunned. Derty was friendly and welcoming, and he invited them to stay for dinner. He cooked a delicious meal of stew and biscuits, and then he told them about his life.

It turns out that Derty was once a famous musician in Europe. He had traveled all over the continent, performing in the best venues and meeting some of the most famous people in the business. But he had grown tired of the fame and lifestyle and decided to retire to Clementsburg to live a peaceful life.

The kids were fascinated by Derty's stories and they hung on his every word. After dinner, Derty shared with them some of his favorite music and even taught them how to play a few songs on the fiddle.

As they were leaving, Derty gave each of them a hug and told them to come back soon. From that day on, Derty became the unofficial music teacher of Clementsburg and the kids often visited him to learn more about music and life.

The townsfolk were surprised by the transformation in Derty. He was no longer the mysterious and eccentric old man, but a beloved figure in the community. His cabin had become a center of music and culture, where people of all ages could come to learn and be inspired. Derty Hofland had truly become the heart of Clementsburg.

Henk Hofland zag ik op straat in Amsterdam een keer langdurig naar een stuk schuimrubber staren. Niet verwonderlijk, thuis maakte hij er wielen en zeilen aan vast. Hij vond het leuk om met afval dat soort voertuigen te maken.

De NRC-journalist kwam vroeger graag in Scheltema. Dat is een cafe aan de Amstel in Amsterdam. Ik zag er tatoueerder Henk Schiffmacher op het terras. De kelners brachten dienbladen met randjes, het was mooi weer.

In de tram liet ik mijn zoon een keer uitstappen toen hij 4 was. Ik hield van achteren zijn capuchon vast. Toen ik opzij keek, zag ik dat Henk Hofland het tafereel belangstellend gade sloeg.
