I don’t see myself leaving the KND rabbit hole soon, so I’ve been thinking of creating a side blog for my less polished doodles :’) A lot of them are random ideas that take root in my head, like this one.

Numbuh 2 angsty headcanons

After exploring the Uno family, it’s time I share some of my thoughts on Hoagie.

Hoagie’s tendency to tell bad jokes all the time is because his dad used to tell a lot of bad jokes too, but when he left (whatever happened to him), Hoagie started to imitate his dad to make himself feel better and to reassure himself too. He just misses his dad.

Many theories/headcanons float in the fandom about Hogarth Sr.’s fate:

he might have died (worst case scenario);

he might be divorced with Betty (personal favorite as an interesting take on the kids’ part. I would have like to see that representation of a “broken family”);

he might be a pilot/engineer/whatever in the military and has yet to come home. In which case, the constant fear that one day someone will come to announce his death is what gives Hoagie insecurities and he’s hiding behind jokes and puns.

While jokes and puns were his way of coping with his dad’s absence in public, he was drinking chocolate sauce in private (metaphor for alcoholism from op spankenstine). In first grade, he was already good with the 2x4 tech that the KND spotted him already (from the sooper bloopers book). He didn’t know if he really wanted to join them, he was already in the hall squad/safety patrol with Joe Balooka (op pinkeye).

In the meantime, Nigel wanted to help his best friend to talk about his issues but Hoagie would dismissed him by telling him that he cannot understand what it’s like to not have a dad (which, to be fair, is true). If Hoagie didn’t want to talk to him, Nigel still convinced him to talk to other people, the chocolate lovers anonymous reunion group.

It was only after Nigel’s kidnapping that Hoagie understood that his problems may be not that big of a deal. His best friend completely changed after the accident it was kinda disturbing. Hoagie understood that, instead of self pitying, he could make a change in the KND.

Hoagie wanted to talk about Nigel’s kidnapping but he refused. Too traumatised to actually say anything to anyone. Since he himself never wanted to talk about his dad, Hoagie never pushed Nigel again to talk about the kidnapping. They both know that if they want to talk about their most difficult part of their lives, they know they will be there for each other.

Respecting the choices and limits of your friend is important. Don’t push your friends to force them to do something they don’t want.

Alright it’s been a few days since I posted my Nigel playlist so here’s my Hoagie playlist. I definitely see him as the type to be into older rock n roll like Buddy Holly and also anything that would be heard in a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. For some more emotional songs I have Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again from Phantom of the Opera which I added after rewatching CAKED-FOUR and having a lot of feelings on Hoagie and his dad. I also have Losing My Religion which kind of sticks out compared to the other songs but that choice was more inspired by how in my theoretical fanfic that I’ll never write Hoagie kind of starts to grow disillusioned with the KND and winds up learning more about some of the shadier sides of the organization which I have a lot of ideas for.
