Exploring Bitcoin Reserve: A Strategic Move for Hong Kong and Germany

Key Points

Hong Kong and Germany are considering adopting Bitcoin as a reserve asset, mirroring US plans.

Lawmakers in both regions have put forth proposals for the Bitcoin reserve.

As the year draws to a close, a growing number of nations are looking into the strategic potential of Bitcoin reserves. Hong Kong and Germany are among the countries contemplating the adoption of Bitcoin as a reserve asset, following the lead of the US. Proposals for this Bitcoin reserve have been submitted by lawmakers in both regions.

Adopting Bitcoin in Hong Kong and Germany

A Hong Kong legislator believes that integrating Bitcoin into the country’s Exchange Fund could enhance financial security, given the evolving global crypto dynamics. Wu Jiezhuang, Chairman of Hong Kong’s Web3 Virtual Asset Development Subcommittee, suggests that Hong Kong’s “One Country, Two Systems” approach could facilitate the incorporation of Bitcoin in its Exchange Fund. However, it should be noted that Hong Kong has not yet identified digital assets as targeted investments for the Exchange Fund.

The country, nevertheless, is open to allowing external investment managers to gain minimal exposure to crypto through diversified portfolios. Given its past crypto-friendly initiatives, it appears that Hong Kong may be extending its crypto scope with a national Bitcoin reserve.

Presently, 12 crypto-linked ETFs are being traded on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, with a total market value of approximately HK$7.4 billion. At the Bitcoin MENA conference on December 9 in Abu Dhabi, former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao expressed his belief in China’s adoption of a strategic Bitcoin reserve.

European Considerations for Bitcoin Reserves

In Germany, former Minister of Finance, Christian Lindner, has proposed a collaboration between the European Central Bank (ECB) and the German Bundesbank to add Bitcoin to their reserves. Lindner praised the US’s progress in establishing a strategic Bitcoin reserve. He stated that the new Trump administration is pursuing a highly progressive policy on crypto-assets like Bitcoin, with even the Federal Reserve considering the inclusion of crypto-assets alongside currencies and gold in its reserves.

Lindner believes that Germany and Europe should not fall behind. During a parliamentary meeting on December 17, Sarah Knafo, a member of the European Parliament, delivered a speech in favor of Bitcoin. She advocated for the establishment of a “Bitcoin strategic reserve” within the European Union. Meanwhile, the EU is preparing to officially start compliance for its Market in Crypto Asset (MiCA) as the year concludes.

After Donald Trump’s victory in the US 2024 presidential elections, some countries have shown increased interest in cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have gained significant attention as countries become more interested in the national reserve. Many believe in Bitcoin’s capacity to help them navigate shifts in global economics. Meanwhile, some US states are proposing legislation to hold 10% of their reserves in Bitcoin. At the beginning of December, ten states confirmed the introduction of legislation to implement strategic Bitcoin reserves.

Dennis Porter, the CEO and co-founder of Satoshi Action Fund, and Republican Senator for Wyoming, Cynthia Lummis, have made significant contributions to this development.

you were bestfriends with sarah since elementary school. In 4th grade, sarah’s dad Joel adopted an auburn hair girl the same age as you both named ellie.

ellie didnt get it at first. 6 months after ellie got adopted and comfortable. you guys went out on a whole going to places and doing activities the 3 of you liked.

ellie thought the characters were cute, especially this little black penguin, she goes up to the section and begins to pick up every single different merchandise; admiring it.

you and sarah giggle as you admire the way ellie just found her sanrio character “thats badtz-maru!” sarah exclaims, handing her one of his pins; knowing she was a fan of pins.

ellie would put the sanrio pins you and sarah would gift her on her backpack, wallet, or key-lanyard; you name it.

ellie cherished all the little hello kitty drawings you would draw for her or even if it was colored from a hello kitty coloring book!

“els! can i come in!” you slightly knock on her door, waiting for to answer “come in, bunny-boo!” you hear her call out from the other side of the door.

“hey! how did you know it was me?” slightly nervous sarah might’ve told ellie about the drawing

“bitch, you’re the only one who knocks” ellie laughs out, moving over on her bed inviting you to sit with her.

you slightly chew on your bottom lil before pulling out a folded up piece of paper from the back of your jean pocket “errm-if you laugh! im never fucking giving you anything ever again in a-” you began to jokingly threaten.

“okay okay! i wont laugh, jeez” ellie says before you handed her the folded paper.

she unfolds the paper to see a sketched hello kitty and badtz-maru on a blanket surrounded by child-like drawn trees; colored in by color pencil.

“its us on a picnic!” you smiled softly, ellie’s cheeks turn into a hue of pink before immediately going over to her desk.

she grabbed a push-pin, going over to the large corkboard above her bed.

it was filed with pictures of you, sarah, and her, pictures of her and joel, and along with it some of her own drawing wish some of your previous ones that you have drawn for her.

“right, here so i can laugh at it once you walk out” she proposed sarcastically.

you quickly grab a pillow throwing at her face. ellie does an exaggerated fall to the floor; hand over her chest.

you would at the laugh the sisters would bicker and get annoyed of each other every time you would go over to Joels house.

eventually fighting over who should have you storm off with them (more like ellie).

now thats when you stand there looking at both of them “you both are annoying” you shake your head, giggling at both of them.

“uhh” ellie actually seemed flustered for some reason. you giggled out “you love my clothing, its okay” you say sarcastically.

sarah being completely amused by the two of you. she knew you both were gay for each other before the both of you even knew.

once you guys got to the comic shop, ofc being you.

wherever you went, hello kitty was right there with you.

after going to the savage starlight section, while you were looking around you seen a familar giant red bow.

you quickly tap sarah as you both squeal out of excitement.

“what?! what is it!?” ellie looks up from the comic book alarmed. you both look over to her with wide eyes while you’re still pointing.

“oh..you both are dramatic as fuck, lets go!” before rushing with you both.

they had selections of stickerbooks, actual books even though most of them were for 3 year olds, and posters.

sarah immediately picked up some my melody posters and a stickerbook of all the characters.

you on the other hand had 2 posters and were struggling in between which one to pick out of all of them.

“c’mon bunny-boo, you cant be serious!” ellie laughs at your indecisiveness “oh-she so serious” sarah utters with a smile, helping you by skimming through some of the books.

you give her a fake pout “hm, choose for me then, williams” you say, coming to a descision for yourself.

ellie gets flustered for a second, you just looked so adorable as you pouted. it made her stomach churn around.

it was purely platonic of course, you were her best-friend.

i till the summer of 8th grade that you guys went out to walk the beach pier.

So this is it: the crew of Vritue's Thief, working together to make work: a middle-aged woman, her teenage kid, an HK-51 droid, and a cat.

This goes a long way to make Eva what she is.

Fluffy February Day 9: Storm

All the lights went out in Virtue’s Thief.  Everything went dead silent for a second, including, much to Eva’s panic, the life support system.  Then the backups kicked on.  She sat, terrified, in the pilot’s seat, with the orange glow of the emergency lights.

She’d taken her first nightshift on the Thief, and she broke the ship.  Somehow. Ma was going to kill her.  Absolutely.

And indeed, Eva heard the second her mom’s boots hit the floor.  Shit, she’s up.

Dad wasn’t going to be.  He was probably going to sleep through the whole thing, as he did these days.  Getting out of bed was a two-man operation, and her mother was already on the way to the cockpit. 

Eva turned to Huck, who was riding shotgun in the co-pilot’s seat.  “Remember, you’re not allowed to kill me, no matter what she says.  I’m only 15.  It’s your primary function to ensure I survive –”

“Interruption: to the date of your majority on your chaincode card.  Correction:  the chaincode card supplied to me by your mother.  That is already 21.65 years old.  Conclusion: my primary mission of ensuring your survival to the Republic age of majority has already been a success.”

Eva gave him a filthy look that only a foiled teenager could.  “You can be a real massive bag of robo-dicks, Huck.”

“Objection!  -- ”

Just then, the door hissed open.  Athene Corolastor’s red hair was braided tightly to keep the curls under control, and she’d thrown on a thermal top over her sleepwear and put on the socks with the little grips on the bottom that she and Eva squabbled over.  “What happened?”

“I don’t know, I swear to the Three Moons.”  Eva leaned back the captain’s chair, away from the dashboard.  “We were going along fine – and then it all shutdown.”

Athene frowned.  “No contacts on the sensors?”

“Not even space junk or an asteroid.”  Eva tapped at the nav computer.  “We were on the course you plotted before going to bed.  Didn’t touch nothing.  Just made sure all the green lights stayed green.”

Athene nodded, distractedly.  “I think…” she trailed off.  She consulted the trajectories she’d charted and the current state of the ship.  “We might have nicked the edge of a geomagnetic storm.” 

Eva made a face.  “How’s that happen?” 

“Local sun might be throwing solar winds and agitating the planetary magnetospheres – mostly self-contained, but if things line up, they can get cranky enough to mess with planets that are in the system – or are passing through hyperspace at the time.”  Athene rattled off the explanation as if it were nothing.  It was needed to know for the business of galactic smuggling; the rest of her education (and Eva’s) was nowhere near as impressive.  Athene motioned for Huck to get out of his chair.  He immediately acquiesced and disappeared down the hallway.

Eva nodded, as if she understood any of that.  “So not my fault?”

“Nope, not at all,” Athene replied, eyes still watching the lights on the dashboard slowly go green again.  “You just hope it doesn’t happen in hot pursuit or take you out in a less than friendly territory.”

Eva slumped into the chair in relief.  “I thought I broke the ship.”

“Happens to all captains, at some point.”  Satisfied that the ship was recalibrating and resetting appropriately, Athene let herself sit down in the co-pilot’s chair.  “Just part of learning the ropes.  What you can predict… and what you can’t.” 

Eva let out a sigh.  “Feels like I’m always going to be learning – never a master –”

“Honey, don’t think you’re going to be one of those skypirates from those books,” Athene cut her off before she could whing.  “We’re small-time.  You’re clocking 1500 hours as if you were some real important pilot that would fly ships that took people places; this is all pretty demanding, for what we are…”  Athene shifted in her seat.  “But I want you to learn it right.  I want you to be ready for anything.”

“Magnetic storms,” Eva gestured out the front viewport.

Athene nodded.  “Fires.  Hyperdrive failures.  Fuel issues… All the things that are going to be yours one day.”

Mother and daughter exchanged smiles. Virtue's Thief was destined to be Eva's, hopefully far, far in the future.

The door chimed and slid open, and in skittered Hylo the cat, unable to bear being separated from Eva a second later.

And then his paw hit something on he way up the dashboard and the ship was plunged into darkness –

“..but I never had a cat on here before.  That can be your new problem with the Thief.”

“…can you at least help figure out what he did?”

“…yeah.”

Terminator: Original Timeline

The first Terminator movie implies that the space time continuum is a closed loop, that all time travelers were always supposed to be there, that you cannot change the future, only cause it to happen as it always did.  Kyle Reese was always supposed to go back in time to save Sarah and father John, Skynet was always supposed to send back a Terminator that Sarah destroys so that Cyberdyne can find the remains and reverse engineer it, ensuring Skynet’s creation.

Terminator 2, though one of the best sequels of all time, disregards these established rules and decides that you CAN change the timeline, with Sarah and John taking action to either stop or postpone Judgement Day, depending on which sequels you consider canon.  In order for the events of the future as depicted in Terminator 1 to exist, Terminator 2 cannot happen, so I have a hypothesis that Terminator 2 is actually an alternate timeline, created by the inclusion of deleted scenes from the first movie.

In a deleted scene of Terminator 1, Sarah looks in the phone book and finds the address of Cyberdyne systems, suggesting to Kyle that they blow it up then and there and prevent Skynet from ever existing.  This scene was excluded from the final cut of the movie, so its canonicity is debatable; I believe it is canon to Terminator 2, but not the final cut of Terminator 1.

If Sarah plans to destroy Cyberdyne from the beginning, then that leads to the events of T2, where she is eventually arrested for trying to blow up a computer factory, as John puts it.  Because she ends up in a psychiatric hospital, John enters the foster care system and the events of T2 play out as seen.

If the deleted scene in T1 never occurs, Sarah never gets the idea to blow up Cyberdyne, and so is never arrested; she and John live off the grid, and she prepares him for Judgement Day, presumably as originally intended.  She always met Kyle Reese, who always fathered John, and Cyberdyne always found the smashed remains of the T-800, but in this original timeline Sarah never tries to stop it, and the events play out as Kyle said they should.  She trains John until he is 12, then they go into hiding as the bombs fall, presumably in Mexico with Enrique Salceda and his family.

August 29, 1997, Judgement Day.  3 billion people die in the nuclear fire.  John is 12 years old, Sarah is in her early 30s.  Skynet hasn’t developed Hunter-Killers yet, but they will soon; Terminators are still a long ways away, so for the first decade or so, people just try to rebuild from the nuclear ashes, occasionally bombed by unmanned drones while Skynet begins building its infantry.  Skynet was an American defense system, so the rest of the world would have no idea what happened or where the killer robots came from.  We never see what happens in, say, Russia or China after Judgement Day; every movie so far has been explicitly set in the United States, with tattered American flags flying in the background or on shoulder patches of the resistance members.

There’s a 32 year span between Judgement Day and the future war depicted in T1 and T2, so John presumably begins leading the resistance in the late 2000s or early 2010s.  Sarah has died long before that, and Kyle was ostensibly born in the early 2000s (his age is never stated except in questionably canonical sequels like Genisys).  The timeline plays out as intended, with humans gaining the upper hand in the 2020s, and smashing Synet’s defense grid (presumably in the Cheyenne Mountain Complex bunker) in 2029.  In a last ditch attempt to win the war, Skynet sends a Terminator back in time to 1984; all they know is that John’s mother is named Sarah, and she used to live in Los Angeles, so the resistance is able to head them off and send one of their own to protect her.  Kyle Reese volunteers (I like to think John didn’t go out of his way to groom him to be his mother’s savior, sacrificing him like cattle; I like to think Kyle chose to go back on his own volition without John ordering him to), and the cycle begins all over again.

The deleted scene is the kicker; if included, Sarah takes initiative and disrupts the original timeline, eventually destroying Skynet and stopping Judgement Day (I stand by the fact that she prevented Judgement Day, full stop. “Rise of the Machines” never happens, “Dark Fate” never happens, it’s just T1 and T2, then happily ever after because she’s been through a lot and deserves to just relax for once).

Summer 2019 Reads

Since I was a slacker this summer and didn’t post reviews of the books I read as I read them I decided to make a list instead. I’ve also included why I chose the book and my brief thoughts, but just ask if you want to hear more about one specific.

Permanent Record by Mary H.K. Choi (S&S for Young Readers 2019)

I got an ARC of this when I worked BookExpo and BookCon at the beginning of the summer and I think that I set my expectations too high because of how much I loved Emergency Contact. It was still a very good book, but I just didn’t connect with the characters as much as in Choi’s previous novel. If you love the celebrity (specifically pop star) + “normal” person trope than chances are you’ll like this book.

Roomies by Christina Lauren (Gallery 2017)

As you know I had strong feelings (all good) about Autoboyography and how well I felt Christina Lauren presented the YA romance. Imagine my surprise when I found out that it was their first YA and that they primarily publish adult contemporary romance. (also imagine my surprise when I realized it was co-authors names Christina and Lauren not one person sorry I’m only human). So when I found out I would be working on a romance project for my NYU program I decided to do some “research” which included picking up this fun fake romance story. If you love the fake dating or fake marriage trope than you will love this book. There are heroic acts, music, accents, and of course misunderstandings.

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren (Gallery 2019)

I picked this up at the same time as Roomies because it was their brand new title and I am a sucker for hate to love romances. While I enjoyed the characters and their banter, after reading some of their other books I’m going to be honest and say that this was not their best. Still if you love anything Christina Lauren do or are like me and a sucker for the enemies to lovers trope than you’ll probably enjoy this book.

Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey (Tor 2019)

So TBH I picked up this book to prep for an interview and I was sold on the beautiful jacket and murder at a magic high school, but nothing could have prepared me for the beauty of Gailey’s writing. Every writer ever will tell you how hard it is to successfully write stream of consciousness and that even if you’re successful in telling a story that way, it’s not always the most successful with readers. (Kind of like using second person. or first person. or anything besides third). But Gailey succeeds and it made sense for the main character who seems a little scattered. If you like Harry Potter or The Magicians (because this is a little darker than HP) then you’ll probably like this book. Really if you like magic and mysteries and murder you’ll probably like this book.       

The Sol Majestic by Ferrett Steinmetz (Tor 2019)

So I picked up this book also as prep for the aforementioned interview because the jacket copy was so beautiful written that I was sold instantly. Teens in space with a fancy restaurant? Sign me up. But I’m not gonna lie the world building is slow and there’s a lot more emphasis on the restaurant and the actual cooking than I expected that it took me a long while to get hooked in the story. I liked it enough to finish it, but can’t say yet if I liked it enough to reread it so do with that info what you will.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber (Flatiron 2017) 

So I finally read Caraval and I am still trying to wrap my head around the whirlwind craziness that is this story. Garber somehow managed to put together a convoluted plot that doesn’t seem like it would make sense or come together, but somehow it does. You know the stories I’m talking about where clearly the author scrambles to tie the strings together to make choices earlier in the story make sense, but they only sort of do? That’s not the case with this story. I’m still trying to decide if I want to continue the series so I will keep y’all posted. 

My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren (Gallery 2018)

This was 10x better than Roomies and The Unhonemooners which I didn’t expect because I’m not usually a fan of best friend romances or anything remotely close to catfishing (hence why I was so disappointed in Sierra Burgess is a Loser), but this book proved me wrong. The characters had depth and a relationship I wasn’t expecting and the ending didn’t feel rushed or forced or superficial for the sake of a happy ending. I liked the analysis of dating apps and the general nerdiness of the characters.  

Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren(Gallery 2018)

Okay so this is by far my favorite Christina Lauren novel I’ve read so far, honestly I’d be shocked if any of the others live up to this one because it was just so cute and quirky and everything I want from a contemporary romantic comedy. If you like general fluff and a confident female lead than this is the book for you. 

Fight or Flight by Samantha Young (Berkley 2018)

So this book had me hooked from the beginning because of the circumstances of the meeting and I’m a sucker for guys with accents, but the relationship was so toxic and I don’t feel like there was enough character development to warrant the ending
