I just love making jams and jellies. I’m not sure why but it’s like meditation for me. This is a batch of Raspberry, Peach and Rose... it smells and taste like an orchard in bloom. We cut the old beach rose bush (bottom) down to the nubs last summer while doing repairs on the carriage house. The rose bush covers the entire side- up two stories and to the roof! We always cut it back - but never so severe. I am very happy to say - ALL of the cuttings took root and new growth is sprouting! So excited to replant them. I had the loveliest day in the @westernreserveherbsociety garden yesterday. Dye is often a tough garden to explain to our guests because most often you’d call our plants “weeds” albeit ancient and useful ones. Our plants in dye share a common bond with the plants in our medicinal section … they’re not always pretty and you can’t really see who they are or what they do, because the dyes or medicines often come from roots stems and leaves, not the pretty flowers, which are more than likely a bonus! Since I became responsible for this part of the garden I’ve been on a quest to make it more relatable, and that means including some of the more common plants like lavenders, iron weed, mulleins, berries and roses, things that people can look at and think to themselves… “ oh ok, they’d squish the berries and get purple dye….or sure, a red rose would make a pretty pink dye!” So to make a long story short, Richard our newest honorary member whom I refer to as our personal “ Rose Whisperer” has been helping me accomplish this task and I’ve been able to transplant at least 4 different varieties into the Dye garden with his help! Yesterday he gave me a really precious gift. He had to clean up one of my favorites , a rowdy and sweetly fragrant Burnet Rose that had grown gangly and overbearing. I mean this rose is a solid one with its roots back in the 1600’s so it’s got amazing survival skills. Richard had a perfect specimen for me with a healthy root ball and just the right size for a place I’ve been struggling with structurally in the garden. In it went with his help and we trimmed it up a bit and it will be glorious next year when it’s blooming right next to the Elderberry with the Rosa Tuscany’s blooming at its base. The hips that the Burnet produces are my favorites of all, they’re deep burgundy black which produces a beautiful dye color and they’re spicy like cinnamon and are wonderful for teas. Coming soon... the exquisite flavour and fragrance of historic roses in bloom. I have many beautiful old roses in my garden , indeed they are my favorites. This picture was taken down at the @westernreserveherbsociety gardens at the @clegarden . We have a beautiful collection of fragrant historic roses in the WRHS gardens, and every year I harvest their petals to create Jams, Jellies , dried edible Rose petals and Teas for our annual sale. We’re so excited that The Western Reserve Herb Society will be selling these and more of our wonderful herbal products at the North Union Farmer’s Market ( Shaker Square) in August of this year. One of the great joys of my life is that this year I’m one of the co- chairman in charge( well actually , the plants are in charge!) of the beautiful Historic Rose Garden down at The Western Reserve Herb Gardens that are housed within @clegarden ! I’m learning so much from the garden herself as well as the other wonderful Rosarians that have made it their labor of love for so many years... I’m truly grateful! Today I harvested rosehips to make Apple , Sour Cherry and Rosehip Syrup ! These rose hips are from the historic roses in the @westernreserveherbsociety and the apples and cherries are from my own trees! The resulting syrup will be full of vitamin C and sunshine! So good for helping to support good immunity as we move into chillier autumn days! This syrup also tastes wonderful when stirred into a steaming cup of your favorite tea! I’ll have about 8 jars of it for sale at this years Herb Fair, held on October the 12th at the @clegarden ! I love this picture of the three Rose Ladies that are so utterly devoted to our Western Reserve Herb Society Historic Rose Garden.
