The Queen who came in from the Cold is out in the UK in hardback first (and Kindle) on Feb 6th. The blurb says the Queen is planning her trip to Italy on the Royal Yacht Britannia when…

I have decided that USAmerican authors need to be banned from writing about historical Britain until they've undergone some kind of apprenticeship under a British writer. "City block", no "and" after "come/go", absolutely no attention paid to accents or speech patterns between classes and eras. This idiot really said the rain washed 18th century London clean for once. I nearly put my face in my hands and wept. If rain could wash London clean the place would have been fresh as a daisy since it was founded. "Doctors" attending village births in 1818. I'm losing count at this point. I'm in pain. I'm not even fucking British, I've just read a truckload of 18th century historical novels set in the UK and looked up everything I could while I was doing it. Are USAmericans just pathologically incapable of reading and researching other places and cultures before trying to put pen to paper or what. Imagine having this much audacity. My soul is bleeding. I need a hospital

A Major Announcement
Okay, so…I have a major announcement to make.
Tumblr media
I found a home for my Lady Sheriff Novel, “Eye For An Eye” at Level Best Books! Not only that, the contract I signed was for a three-book deal. It means my Lady Sheriff will have a trilogy of novels. Woohoo! Special thank you to Level Best Books for including me in their family!
I think I’m a little numb, and quite frankly, stunned. My head is also spinning. I’ve wanted to publish a book since I was eleven. I’ve spent most of my life pursuing that dream and now it’s happening, I don’t know what to make of it.
Tumblr media
Anyway, that’s all I know so far. Got to get cracking on the sequel, which at this point I’m calling “Fire By Night.” After that, the third novel…which I’d like to call “Judgment Day.”
I’m going to ask for prayers because this is all new territory to me. I’ve only published short stories in the past, and hope to continue to. But publishing a novel is different, I’m sure. I’d like prayers that I don’t get swallowed up with pride, prayers that I can figure out what I need to do and how to do it, prayers that I can write quality work that the editors and the readers like.
Until Next Time!

FANS OF THE ALIENIST WILL LOVE THE RIPPER LIVES
Tumblr media
The Ripper Lives is a Victorian gothic murder mystery that continues the story of Jack the Ripper after the Canonical Five. The serialized novel is narrated from a first-person perspective by Scotland Yard Inspector Frederick Abberline after retirement. Abberline, greatly bothered that the public has never been given closure in the Ripper case, finally reveals what happened after the death of Mary Jane Kelly, confirming that the Ripper did not just disappear into history as many believe.
Like The Alienist, the 10-part novel follows the 19th-century investigation of an unknown serial killer and includes historical facts. Many famous names associated with the Jack the Ripper case appear and interact with the characters, enhancing the connection between the fictional story and the real-life events.
ABOUT THE RIPPER LIVES: JACK THE RIPPER'S REIGN OF TERROR CONTINUES The world’s most elusive and terrifying serial killer returns in the 10-part Victorian gothic murder mystery series, The Ripper Lives. Dripping with 19th-century atmosphere and intrigue, each thrilling, suspense-filled chapter ends with a shocking cliffhanger that compels the reader forward. The fear builds as the historical horror story unfolds, culminating in an explosive, mind-bending conclusion.
The Ripper Lives is a sequel to the true story that commences after the slayings of the Canonical Five. As a secretly appointed task force works to bring the butcher to justice under the radar of the newspapers, the unsuspecting public believes the threat has subsided. But while hiding in the shadows, the serial killer's compulsion to mutilate has grown exponentially stronger, and for Whitechapel, the harrowing nightmare of tension and terror has only just begun.

Series Redux: Lady Emily mysteries
The eighteenth in the Lady Emily series came out this week, so it’s an ideal time for me to point you back at my series post about Tasha Alexander’s (very) late Victorian and early Edwardian sleuth and ancient history enthusiast. I’m still a couple of books behind – I’ve actually only read one more than I had back when I wrote that last post, because the later books remain a right pain to try and…

Title: The Shadow of the Empire (Judge Dee Investigations #1)
Author: Qiu Xiaolong
Genre/s: historical, mystery
Content/Trigger Warning/s: murder, death, torture, implied rape and sexual torture
Summary (from the author's website): The legendary Judge Dee Renjie investigates a high-profile murder case in this intriguing companion novel to Inspector Chen and the Private Kitchen Murder set in seventh-century China. Judge Dee Renjie, Empress Wu's newly appointed Imperial Circuit Supervisor for the Tang Empire, is visiting provinces surrounding the grand capital of Chang'an. One night a knife is thrown through his window with a cryptic note attached: 'A high-flying dragon will have something to regret!'

Spoiler-Free Review: This book didn’t quite live up to what I hoped it would be. I’ve never encountered any Judge Dee novels before, so I was walking into something with conventions and tropes that I’d never deal with before, but I figured: it couldn’t be that bad. I’d learn along the way, and hopefully it would be a fun experience.
Except, well… This novel wasn’t quite as interesting as I hoped it would be. Don’t get me wrong: it FUNCTIONS well enough, and it’s entirely possible that my absolute lack of experience with the gong’an tradition is affecting my view here, but I was hoping for something a bit more substantial than what this book offers. Though the novel does attempt to tackle the power dynamics of Tang China, and how those dynamics could ruin the lives of ordinary people while keeping those in the upper echelons of power safe and blameless, it just doesn’t seem to have enough weight to it.
What ends up happening, then, is that the book WORKS perfectly fine, in that all the plot points come together in a way that makes sense, but the whole thing lacks a sense of HEFT to it. It comes off as the kind of story that one is entertained by while one is reading it, but then completely forgets right after. I suspect this might be down to the writer, whom I think has enough technical skill to write a novel, but not quite enough artistic flair to write something that REALLY stands out.
Speaking of the writing: I also realized that I’ve read another book from another author that was put out by the same publishing house as this one, and both books seem to have certain issues with the writing as a whole. This book was BETTER, in my opinion, than the other book I read, but both books have similar issues regarding the overall polish of the writing. Maybe something’s up with the publishing house’s editors?
If this book has anything genuinely good about it, it’s poetry that’s quoted as part of the plot. I’ve read little Chinese poetry in my life, and most of that is from the contemporary period because it’s hard to find translations of the older stuff. This book, however, does have a few poems from poets I’d never encountered before, and I’m going to see if I can track down more of their works. Hopefully they’ll be translated.
Overall, this book doesn’t leave much of an impression on the reader; it reads like the sort of book that one enjoys for the span of time that one is reading it, and then puts aside to be completely forgotten. The only really good thing to come out of it are the poems that are included as part of the plot, which will hopefully encourage the reader to explore more Tang Dynasty poetry on their own, if translations are available.
