NOVEMBER 2024 WRAP UP
[ loved liked okay nope dnf (reread) ]
Kicking Ice • (The Bride of the Blue Wind) • Animal Farm • The Lost Manuscript • Heart's Blood • Hotel • The Liar's Knot • The Education of Pip • The Glassblower • Terec and the Wall • (The Hands of the Emperor) • The Village Library Demon Hunting Society • One Good Turn • The Silence of Bones • (The Raven Tower) • The Art Thief • Safer Places • Letters to Half-Moon Street
* * * * * *
Letters to Half-Moon Street - an absolutely charming epistolary regency romance told mostly through letters between the main character, his siblings, and his love interest. The mc is gay and demi-sexual (and a younger son) in a queer-norm England where gender norms have been replaced by rules about birth order, and there's magic - it's very Sorcery & Cecelia meets KJ Charles (if not quite as good). As I said, very charming, but when I read the two shorter follow ups, One Good Turn and The Education of Pip, it was pretty clear that the epistolary format (and romance) helped cover a lot of hurts. I applaud the author for including an aromantic character and trying to write stories about finding your place and self-recovery without romance, but in her attempt to create comfort she sacrificed any real development to the characters or the plot. (also, while the rich upper class characters are exceedingly nice to the lower-class characters, we still almost never see any of their servants. hmm.) There's a few more books in the series that are romances (and at least one looks like it might be epistolary), so we'll have to see if she improves. Fantastic covers though!
Safer Places - a comic collection that was supposed to be for my book club but didn't quite work out unfortunately! These comics were very strange and dreamlike, making me not quite sure what happened but very much wanting to think about it. The artist also returned to a story idea several times, sometimes taking on an entirely new shape, and it really lent a sense of connection to the book as a whole. Would recommend!
The Art Thief - I'm not really one for more narrative-type nonfiction or for true crime, but non-violent crime involving fine art? I don't know why I find the fine-art world (and crime) so fascinating, but I do, and I enjoyed this! It was actually a fairly nice, chill read to distract myself with in the middle of the election.
The Raven Tower - revisiting my first Ann Leckie 5 years later - this was incredible! Slow yes, but watching the story build itself out of all the pieces was absolutely fascinating. 100% satisfied with the ending, but it was also a bit of a cliff-hanger? I'll be absolutely fascinated to see what kind of stories Leckie felt compelled to write that take up half of the Lake of Souls collection.
The Silence of Bones - DNF @ 11%. I was very interested in this as a historical mystery with a female protagonist set in Korea, but leery of it being YA. I admit I wasn't a big fan of the audiobook narrator, but an hour and a half into the audiobook I still hadn't hadn't settled into the story, so decided to drop it.
The Village Library Demon Hunting Society - This was very high on my watch-list for 2024 due to my love for CM Waggoner's first book Unnatural Magic, but was somewhat leery of the cozy-fantasy vibes it was giving. My first shock came when it turned out to have a fairly modern and contemporary setting and was not in a fantasy other-world, though as expected it was definitely going for the cozy-fantasy and elderly-person-solves-murder vibes that are popular right now, and with which I've personally had mixed results. Overall though, it was aiming to be a sort of meta-commentary on cozy mystery tropes, which I think it was successful at! I think it definitely did better than its sci-fi cousin, the Midsolar Murders series by Mur Lafferty. I just wish it had a better title, this one is a bit of a mouthful and only semi-relevant.
The Hands of the Emperor - started slowly rereading this a few months ago with the intention of getting around to my first reread of the sequel. Honestly, the perfect book to be reading during an absolutely horrible election, I imagine I'll be burying my head in the Nine Worlds a lot in the upcoming years.
I wasn't quite ready to head directly into AtFotS after finishing Hands, so jumped around to some of Victoria's short stories I hadn't read yet. Terec and the Wall is the second Terec story - I admit I really don't have much interest in this sub-series? This one in particular was at least interesting in the second half because of its crossover with the Greenwing & Dart series, so I recommend you don't read this until you've read that. The Glassblower was...fine. It showed promise, but it was so short! I hope the second part fleshes out more, but idk. It's also related to the Ysthar collection of books, which is the only part of the Nine Worlds that I haven't bothered to revisit yet. To skip ahead a bit, the third of the Sisters Avramapul novellas is finally out! It's been a while so I decided to reread the first two books, starting with The Bride of the Blue Wind. It's a Bluebeard retelling and deals with pregnancy/body horror and is not for the faint-hearted! Sardeet was SO YOUNG in this, I don't think I quite realized before. Good but not my favorite of the series.
The Liar's Knot - loved loved loved. These books are so good even if (or because?) all of the plot twists are somewhat soap-operatic. I think this is my favorite in the series because the characters are a bit more settled but also having to learn to trust each other. And all of the secret identity reveals!!! I had a wonderful time.
Hotel -DNF @ 8%. picked this up at a recent library sale because a mystery at a hotel sounds cool! Then I started it on audiobook and realized it was a thriller (not my thing) written by a guy in the 60's (ditto). What I read was certainly passable and maybe I could have gotten through it, but I lost interest.
Heart's Blood - I've seen Marillier's work around somewhere, and picked this one up at a library book sale at some point. I got so close to DNF'ing this early on and almost wish I had. It wasn't bad I think, it has some beauty-and-the-beast vibes, but it felt excruciatingly slow, and something that I couldn't quite put my finger on was annoying the heck out of me. It made me wish more times than I should admit that I was reading Chalice by Robin McKinley instead. I'm not entirely scared off of trying Marillier's other work, but I'd proceed with extreme caution.
The Lost Manuscript - DNF @ 19%. A surprisingly lighthearted novel told in letters about a woman who finds a manuscript in a hotel bedside table and proceeds to track down the original author, only to discover someone else had added to the manuscript at some point after he lost it. She and her contacts try and trace its history back to find the mystery author. Seemed very nice, if you're looking for something calm and lighthearted? Just not what I was looking for at the time.
Animal Farm - somehow managed to escape reading this for school, and a podcast I listen to loves recommending this, so I picked up a copy at the same sale as Heart's Blood. I feel like I spent most of the book sagely nodding my head, like yup, that's how it can be! Very smart book, not a favorite but I'm glad I read it.
Kicking Ice - backed this on Kickstarter ages ago when I was still deep in my Check, Please! fervor. Finally picked it up because it was short and I needed to finish another book for my owned-tbr challenge. It was ok. Maybe a better choice if you're a young girl interested in hockey or sports in general? I also didn't like the art style used for most of the book, so a pass from me. I'm sure a lot of the info about the NWHL is also outdated by this point.

By Susan R. Eisenstein
“Unfortunately, a great hue and cry of antisemitic, hateful and inciting rhetoric has been raised against the Settenbrino family and business due to his deployment overseas in the great global war on terror, where he served in the Israeli army as an engineering officer, to destroy terrorist infrastructure, places where weapons were stored or with subterranean tunnels. Engineering corps do not engage in battle unless confronted by terrorists.”
Yisroel’s social media post goes on to say, “Hamas is on the United States’ terrorist list and a deadly organization that terrorizes its own people. As such, Israel is a country which is keeping the world safe for democracy, which includes the rights of women, children and gays. We, here at the Historic Blue Moon Hotel, despise war and all horrors. But slandering and orchestrating a concerted attack against a family business and an organization dedicated to the preservation of art, history, design and New York culture, due to one of its employees having physically endangered his life in order to save life and banish terror is in the very least a sick joke and at worst an open expression of support for terror.
Tumblr media
Yisroel’s post also cites noteworthy information by John Spencer, West Point expert on urban warfare, about IDF practices. “IDF practices include calling everyone in a building to alert them of a pending air strike and giving them time to evacuate, a tactic that I’ve never seen elsewhere in my decades of experience, as it also notifies the enemy of the attack and sometimes even dropping small munitions on top of the building to provide additional warning. They have been conducting multiple weeks of requests that civilians evacuate certain parts of Gaza, using multi-media broadcasts, texts and flier drops.”
Bram said, “It’s crazy how far antisemites will go to take things out of context to make it fit their agenda no matter the consequences. It’s even more mind-boggling how many people blindly accept that twisted narrative without doing any due diligence or even simple logical thinking on their own.”
In addition to working inordinate hours to overcome the almost insurmountable debt the family has incurred from the 18-month pandemic shutdown, a burden that they simply cannot carry, the Settenbrino family, business and staff are now targets of hateful antisemitic rants such as, according to the family, “Zionist filth, baby killers and genociders.” And the Settenbrinos say they have also received Holocaust-era hate messages alluding to gas chambers and lampshades. All of this because their son, Bram, is defending Israel as well as American and Western democracy.

Anonymous submission from NYC: "Actionists have defaced the facade of the Historic Blue Moon Hotel, the family business of IOF soldier and war criminal Bram Settenbrino. Black paint was splattered on their doors and windows, as well as red triangles and the message "Baby Killer". Settenbrino became known last month for publishing videos of himself firing indiscriminately at civilian infrastructure and a mosque in Gaza.
Actionists said, "This is a community-based approach to anti-imperialism. The genocide in Gaza may be happening across the ocean, but many of its perpetrators walk among us here in NYC. They should never have peace.
We take inspiration from the rich legacy of antifascism, of groups like Anti-Racist Action and the 43 Group--understanding that we have to act locally to make fascism obsolete globally. Where they go, we go.
Organize, research, map out the networks in which soldiers of imperialism pass freely between the frontline and the imperial core. Find them and give them hell."

I do have Thoughts™ on the Shadowhunter chronicles, or at least on their author, but I don't think they're the kind you want to discuss, so instead I will ask - what kids' lit did you read? I'm a touch older than you but I think you would have been a kid around the time I decided reading kids' lit wasn't beneath me and my dad could go sit on a tack, so I'm curious if we read the same sorts of things. (I did/do love PJO/Rick Riordan.)
oh man there's so much
i mentioned mary downing hahn and margaret peterson haddix on the original post, because they're two of my favorite Children's Authors ever (particularly MDH, my biggest horror inspiration -- at least two novel drafts i'm working on are partial tributes to her)
i frickin love ann m. martin -- the babysitters club is a standout (that series got me through my parents divorce, and i accidentally got suuuper reinvested in 2021 because of the TV show, and the first like 15-20 books are super solid), but an underrated classic of hers is the 10 kids no pets duology (i sobbed like a baby when my dog destroyed 10 kids on thanksgiving as a child)
BEVERLY CLEARY, particularly the ramona books!! my cat is named beezus after those books/that movie. i love the ramona books so much to this day
Tumblr media
(beezus the cat)
i loved the diary of a wimpy kid books against my will as a kid. they're so fucking funny
judy blume!! i loooved the fudge books, but also blubber, & the pain and the great one, & i've recently rediscovered margaret (not one of my favorites as a kid, tragically)
THE PENDERWICKS. was obsessed with these as a kid, especially the first three (the release dates were soooo staggered i was like 18 by the time the last one dropped -- i have mixed feelings)
this is a deep cut, but if anyone has read blue or comfort by joyce moyer hostetter -- not only did i meet her, but those books are based in true historical fact set close to where i grew up
love kate dicamillo, but particularly winn dixie and edward tulane
wendy mass, particularly the series set in that one small town surrounding the birthdays
penny from heaven and turtle in paradise by jennifer l holm
the hotel for dogs books! one of few that overtook the movie in my mind, despite me seeing it first
some individual books that stand high in my mind: rules. drums, girls, and dangerous pie. out of my mind. walk two moons. bluefish. night of the twisters. the ghost of fossil glen. the plant that ate dirty socks. the watsons go to birmingham, 1963. there's a boy in the girls bathroom. the dollhouse murders.
i was an american girl kid, and followed the historical characters up to rebecca
barbara park!! ofc junie b jones, but she's got a lot of other gems
as a little kid, i really loved like the magic tree house, a-z mysteries, bailey school kids, that kind of stuff
GOOSEBUMPS
the bunnicula/howliday inn books!! 10x funnier now that i kind of understand the ironic humor
i really loved phoebe stone for a while too
i'm probably forgetting so many lmao
(i've heard a lot of the cassandra clare drama, which is a lot of why i avoided the books for so long, so i definitely get that lol)

Get to know me tag!
Thanks for the tag @deanwax!
Last song: Abnormalize by Ling Tosite Sigure. It's on one of my character playlists for Night Of The Blue Moon
Last TV show or film: The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes. I don't care much for films, as I don't have the attention span necessary to sit still and do nothing for that long, but since I loved the book, I had to see the film. It was good, but it would have worked better as a series in my opinion, as it cut way too much from the book
Currently watching: Nothing right now, but I'm excited for Hazbin Hotel
Currently reading: We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian. I'm a sucker for gay historical romances, and this one's set in 1950s New York, at a newspaper press. Also while it's not explicitly stated, one of MCs, Andy, is very heavily implied to be autistic, so points for good autistic rep
Sweet, spicy, or savory?: I love sweets, especially red velvet cake, and Haribo gummies. I'm also very fond of Lindt nuxor, and stracciatella lindor truffles
Last thing I searched online: Daki flan. Daki flan plushies are very difficult to come by where I live, and it was just my luck that a store near me happened to have a fresh shipment of giant daki flan plushies in stock. One is now on its way to me
Last thing I searched for writing purposes: Silver pointe shoes. When coming up for a design for Ariel (MC of my WIP, Night Of The Blue Moon)'s magical girl costume, I wanted to create something that was both practical and pretty, and since Ariel did ballet as a teenager, pointe shoes seemed like the perfect option
Current obsession: We Could Be So Good. I'm very, very in love with this book right now. The domestic 1950s newspaper gays took my heart, and they won't give it back. AAAAAA
Tagging some of my newest followers, @elaraslove and @estellamiraiauthor

This Week’s Horrible-Scopes
It’s time for this week’s Horrible-Scopes! So for those of you that know your Astrological Signs, cool! If not, just pick one, roll a D12, or just make it up as you go along. It really doesn’t matter. Better yet! Check out “Heart of the Game, Fredonia” and see if they can sell you those D12’s with the symbols on them. Tell them “Shujin Tribble” sentcha. And “Hail, Hail, Fredonia!” Home of the Blue Devil!
Even though it’s still only just barely into the New Year, you need a vacation. And since we’re nothing if not cheap, we’ll just tell you where you should go even if you can’t afford it. And, no! We’re not going to tell you to Go To Hell. Chances are you’ve already been told that enough times this week.
Aries
We’re dropping you off just north of the Dominican Republic at Turks & Caicos! This collection of roughly 100 islands is popular with honeymooners and for good reason: sparkling white sand, crystal-clear water, and nearly 350 miles of colourful coral reef! Be sure to spend a day or two lounging on Grace Bay Beach with plenty of opportunities to snorkel, scuba dive, and ride horses along the coast. So This Week… Be sure to check your horse’s belly strap before you go riding. Not because you’re liable to fall but because you want to know if you’re on a stallion or a mare. Trust us, there is a difference in temperament.
Taurus
If you bend an ear you’ll enjoy all the art and flowers and canal-lined streets and "coffee shops" and high-end boutiques… Welcome to Amsterdam! Yes, you could enjoy the art or the food or the bicycling… and you can have a stop to enjoy the street food scene by eating herring or Dutch fries, or satisfy your sweet tooth with stroopwafels. So This Week… Buy some stroopwafels at your local grocery store and TRY to imagine they aren’t Cock-Waffles. We DARE you.
Gemini
WELP! If picturesque beaches and warm weather are what you're after, look no further than the British Virgin Islands! You’ll have easy access to Smuggler's Cove and Brewers Bay. And if you book your hotel room on Tortola, the area's largest island, you can hop between the smaller islands on boat tours. So This Week… Re-learn all your maritime terminology before you try to steal a 20-sail pirate clipper. Oh, and buy some sea sickness pills.
Cancer Moon-Child
This might be a little weird, but you’re getting sent to the “U-A-E”! the United Arab Emirates, specifically to Dubai. You COULD do something simple, like visit the Dubai Mall. Or how about indoor Ski Dubai? And how about freaking out after getting to the top of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building on the planet, at over 800 Meters tall. So This Week… We know you wanted to know, so - it would take just shy of 13 seconds for you to go “SPLAT!” after jumping off that thing, with an impact of over Seven-Hundred-Thousand joules. So don’t do that! It might not hurt YOU, but it’ll hurt someone else.
Leo
We’re sending you to the largest island in French Polynesia - Tahiti! And just to get you over your fear of the ocean we’ve booked you into a lavish overwater bungalow. And once you’ve stopped having a panic attack, there’s prime snorkeling and surfing conditions all around you. If you're staying on dry land you COULD look for more cultural activities, like the island's temples, or shop for Tahitian pearls. So This Week… Don't ask what a pearl necklace is worth here. Just trust us.
Virgo
Your vacation is just a chance for you to get away from everything and be calm, peaceful, and serene. We’re sending you to the lush Indonesian paradise of Bali. Right now it’s the dry season, so beachtime will be perfect. Follow that up with tours through some temples, and finish up with dinner in the village of Kintamani, home to a towering (and active) volcano. So This Week… If you take a Balinese cooking class and the instructor suggests heating your pan in the magma, IT’S A TRICK! DON’T DO IT!
Libra
Talk about an historic location, your destination brings you to one of the original Seven Natural Wonders of the World! A place with, literally, one-of-a-kind scenery. You’ll be looking through some of the over 600 islands and 1,500-plus species of fish, but you better be careful with them all. You’ll be Underwater up the coast of Queensland, Australia and snorkeling in Australia's Great Barrier Reef! It will be a bit dangerous, being that it’s ’stralia, but we trust you not to do anything life threatening. So This Week… learn what Ozzie plants you are NOT ALLOWED TO TOUCH - specifically the “Gympie-Gympie”. Do NOT touch it! Seriously! This is No Joke! You WILL want to die!
Scorpio
The best part about your destination is you pretty well already know the local language and cuisine. Take your choices from historical landmarks and modern-day attractions, London, England is a world unto itself. Do things the easy way: join a tour that takes you to the Tate Modern art institution, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, Borough Market, and the British Museum. And once you’re done there, have a sit down classic afternoon tea. But plan on a weekend trip to share a Sunday roast at a local pub. So This Week… get used to the taste of Malt Vinegar because you WILL be shot on sight for trying to put ketchup on your Fish-n-Chips!
Sagittarius
Not only are you headed to a beautiful city overlooking the Balearic Sea, but you’ll get an amazing theme song out of it. You’re headed out to Barcelona, Spain! Walk through Medieval architecture, take in the intricate Basílica de la Sagrada Família, and enjoy Antoni Gaudí's whimsical creations in Park Güell. Spend some time in the water at Barceloneta beach before checking out the restaurants and bars along Las Ramblas at all hours of the night… which will be perfect for your jet lagged brain. So This Week… find your old Spanish notes from High School and try to remember if you were taught Castilian Spanish or not. It WILL make a difference in how you’re treated.
Capricorn
Regardless if you say it cah-RIB-bee-ahn, or cah-rah-BEE-anne, you’re headed to the mountainside resorts of St. Lucia. Planning on swimming and relaxing in the ocean? Head to Reduit Beach or Anse Chastanet. Want a little more adventure? Try zip lining through the Chassin region’s rainforest. It’s the dry season now, so it’ll be a little more expensive, but considering what the weather and food will be like, it’ll be worth it. So This Week… stop being stingy and just buy a new bottle of sunscreen. That last one expired in the twenty-teens.
Aquarius
You want to claim you’re an “oenophile”, do you? Well we’re shipping you off to Santorini, Greece! It’s a top honeymoon destination with breathtaking sunsets, whitewashed villages and colorful beaches. History buffs could check out Ancient Thira, then get your wine-tasting in while visiting central Santorini's wine tours. The best part of this whole vacation is… alfresco dinner at Amoudi Bay. So This Week… make sure you have lots of memory storage for your camera and a proper power adapter so you don’t blow it up this time.
Pisces
Have we got something special for you! Someone, and we’re not naming names, actually PAID for a Certain Somepony to get, and I QUOTE… “a naughty scope”. So Roxy? You’re getting sent to Negril, Jamaica to spend a week at Hedonism II! You’re booked in Mid-March for “Hedo Swing Breakers” with your choices of fun like: a Boozy Easter Egg Hunt, Truth or Dare Jenga, a Rave Igloo, Dinner on the Beach, or a Car Wash. That’s right! It’s a Clothing Optional all-adult resort hosting a huge lifestyle party for couples and throuples ages 19-45… OH, wait… You’ve already aged out of that bracket. Well, shoot. Uhm… You could just stay home and be nude all you want instead. It’s a lot cheaper too. Sorry. (That good enough, Kali? Oh, OOPS! Sorry!)
And THOSE are your Horrible-Scopes for this week! Remember if you liked what you got, we’re obviously not working hard enough at these. BUT! If you want a better or nastier one for your own sign or someone else’s, all you need to do to bribe me is just Let Me Know - or check out the Ko-Fi page ( https://ko-fi.com/icarusthelunarguard )! These will be posted online at the end of each week via Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Discord, and BLUESKY.

Pan Am R&D
Pan Am was founded by Juan Trippe on March 14, 1927 and played an important role in shaping the global airline industry into what we have today. Pan Am was originally founded as a small air mail and passenger service that operated between Key West, Florida and Havana Cuba, but quickly expanded its routes to the other parts of the Caribbean and South America. In 1939 Pan Am became the first airline to routinely fly passengers across the Atlantic Ocean, flying from New York to Marseilles, France. In 1958, Pan Am was one of the first airlines to introduce jet travel with the Boeing 707, which made international travel faster and even more comfortable. This move sparked the Jet Age in commercial aviation. Pan Am would continue to be a juggernaut in worldwide travel, and would even dabble in the Space Age by partnering with NASA, playing a role in the early stages of the Apollo moon missions, including the development of the Lunar Module. In the early 1990s Pan Am experienced a mix of financial, operational, and competitive issues leading to its bankruptcy and liquidation in the early 1990s.
On October 30th, 1977 Pan Am flight 50 was a historic flight held to celebrate the airline’s 50th anniversary. This flight was the first commercial airline flight to fly over both the North and South Poles. The flight started in San Francisco, flew over the North Pole, stopped in London, flew over South Africa, flew over the South Pole, stopped in New Zealand, and then returned to San Francisco. The flight took a total of 54 hours and 7 minutes to complete. During the flight, passengers were treated to special meals, fine wines and Gucci fashion shows as they headed towards the North Pole. Unlike previous polar flights, which were primarily for the wealthy, this flight was accessible to a wider range of passengers allowing many more people to see the beauty of the poles. (Project Assumption) On March 14, 2027, Panam will return to the Airline scene with Pan Am 100 to celebrate its 100th anniversary, creating a unique flight experience with unique branding to kick off the return of Pan Am in the 21st century.
The marketing objective of Pan Am 100 is to create an exciting “kick off” event for the return of the airline, raising awareness and generating excitement for the return of the airline. Pan Am’s goal will be to return to the top international airline. Success will be measured  in the short term by the number of customers who buy tickets to fly in Pan Am 100, and going forward it will be measured by the number of countries passengers can travel to amenity quality, availability of non stop flights, and the speed of flights. Competition includes: Singapore Airlines (Singapore Airlines Official Website | Book International Flight Tickets), Qatar Airways (Book Flights with a World-class Airline | Qatar Airways), Eva Air (Homepage - EVA Air | North America (English)), and Emirates (Book a flight | Emirates United States). The target audience for the event and the airline is commercial, we want the highest number of people to ride and have it be accessible. It is very important to provide safe and convenient international travel. Pan Am 100 will generate excitement for the return of the Pan Am airline as a whole by showcasing the airline's mastery in international travel and on flight experience. We will present an experience to the customer that is something that they do not want to miss, with an excited yet refined tone.
Must haves  - Pan Am 100 event, return of the Pan Am Airline, Original Lapis Lazuli blue, Unique yet familiar rebrand.
Could have - Bookings of flights & hotels together, New color(s) such as silver, Globe Branding, Flight terminal design references.
Won’t have - Boat Planes, Space Travel / Theming
