I made a playlist for Hispanic Heritage Month.

All bands and artists featured are goth, deathrock, darkwave, or adjacent genres from Spain and Latin America, or otherwise prominently feature members of Hispanic backgrounds.

I've long since held the opinion that without the LatAm and Spanish scenes doing most of the heavy lifting, goth as a subculture probably would not have lived past the mid-2000s, and I feel like those scenes deserve more recognition.

on today's first episode of :

things I quip back to my parents as a poc human with poc parents (and don't get smacked)

we'll start simple today. (I'm a pro demolisher if that's a word)

so yesterday I was driving my mom somewhere and she reminded me that she put me back on her dental insurance plan. the original reason she took me off was bc I wasn't going to the dentist, but I didn't know when the hell to go.

so

when she told me that I was an adult now, and that I've got to do adult things, I held a finger up. (askhuALLy- ahh vibes)

I turned to her and I said, "no I'm not an adult. you made my curfew 9pm max on WEEKDAYS and the street lights aren't even turned on. I will be an adult when that's lifted and you trust me enough to be an ADULT on my own. so you tell me when to set the appointment up and I'll do it."

mind you this was all said with a smile and in a moving vehicle. she laughed and shook her head, BUT SHE HAD NO COME BACK BECAUSE HELLO????

I grew apart from most friend groups I was associated with not as or because I got older. Rather because I was more interested in what I put into the subcultures I was raised in, whereas most of those I knew were only interested in what they got out of them. Cholo, goth, punk, metal, skater. Like what have I given back to the cholo subculture? I helped raise my Mexican cousins to not be clouded by the machismo of that scene and to be more in tune emotionally than the thugs my brother and I were raised around. What have I given or put into goth/punk/metal? All the bands I’ve played in and spoken word shows, and shows I set up. People I taught the DIY ethos to and taught everything I know about fliers, patches, sewing, tagging, and standing for what’s right and creating a scene from nothing. What have I given back to skating? My entire life. Since I learned to skate I’ve gotten hundreds on boards. Pushed board programs locally to teach others. Helped raise money to send decks and completed to communities globally that couldn’t afford them. I never wanted to be the big man and be recognized. So you’ll never hear my name. I just wanted to be happy and do my part to make this a better place than the East LA background I was raised in. White mom, Chicano father, gang life was an easy choice. I took a harder direction by not joining. I’ll say I’m definitely not innocent of some gangland crimes and I’m sure I still have a load of karma coming but I’m sure I’ll keep pushing positive til the wheels fall off and karma comes knocking.

These days I’m just an artist/activist who represents the voice of his families deep history.
