I made a playlist for Hispanic Heritage Month.
All bands and artists featured are goth, deathrock, darkwave, or adjacent genres from Spain and Latin America, or otherwise prominently feature members of Hispanic backgrounds.
I've long since held the opinion that without the LatAm and Spanish scenes doing most of the heavy lifting, goth as a subculture probably would not have lived past the mid-2000s, and I feel like those scenes deserve more recognition.

Do you ever write to music?
Occasionally, I'll play an emotional song when writing a really emotional chapter of my novel "Damsel in the Red Dress." I find getting into this almost "cinematic" mindset can help me channel more emotion into the scene. While it's certainly not the only way you can 'make yourself emotional' to bring more life to the scene, I think it's a pretty effective one.
If you've never tried writing to music (specifically catered to the mood of the scene) I encourage you to try it sometime. You might find it helps you get through a sticking point when the emotions are falling flat.

Hola amigos! Me gusta Slowpoke! Nosotras estamos aprendiendo español!
My boyfriend is Mexican American and his first language is Spanish. We've already been together for more than 2 years, and it's about time I learn the language (specifically the Mexican Spanish dialect) 🇲🇽
Some words are already familiar to me from elementary school Spanish classes and the Tagalog language 🇵🇭 has some Spanish vocabulary. I'm mainly relying on Spanish YouTube and the website Dreaming Spanish to learn, which uses the Comprehensible Input hypothesis of listening 👂
Please send me your recommendations of Mexican YouTubers (who make videos in Spanish), TV shows/telenovelas, artists, and movies! Or good Spanish media in general.

Let's Learn About Hispanic Heritage
A pair of salsa dancers. #hispanic #heritage #illustration #digitalart #artsample #kidlitart #salsa #dance #dancers
Interior Illustration 7 of 18 Salsa dancing is a very Latin American tradition. This illustration is actually very small on the page, so that’s why the dancers are mostly faceless.

“America has no culture” is an inherently racist statement. Especially when talking about California, which has enormous populations (yes, plural) of Hispanic and Asian immigrants.
It’s such a self report that you see the American hegemony, the American monolith, as a singularly white entity that’s worthy of scorn. I want that person to look at the Black American NYC Miku design and tell me with their full chest that that isn’t culture. Especially when modern pop culture owes so much to Black American culture — hip hop, language, streetwear and fashion, pop music, jazz — as is actively erasing their roots, saying all of America has no culture is a dumbass statement.
Also, “all the US Mikus are dressed in generic casual street style for coolish weather.” The original Brazilian Miku is wearing sunglasses, a crop top, short shorts, a bikini, and flip flops you absolute dunce. If you’re gonna be rude at least be consistent.

Selena Selena,
born Selena Quintanilla, in full Selena Quintanilla Pérez, (born April 16, 1971, Lake Jackson, Texas, U.S.—killed March 31, 1995, Corpus Christi, Texas), American singer who was a vivacious entertainer and whose fluid voice celebrated the sound of Tejano, a fast-paced, accordion-based Latin dance music that combines elements of jazz, country, and German polka. It is sung in Spanish and is rooted in the Hispanic community in South Texas. Fans dubbed Selena the Queen of Tejano and the Latin Madonna, the latter referring to the famed pop star. She was poised to achieve crossover success with the release of her first English-language album before she was murdered in 1995.
