Thoughts on the 'Alina is Fitz's mom' theory?

(also for the record i have seen your huge other ask about linh and tam and biana and fitz i've just been working on other ones i will get to it <3 and it is VERY interesting btw)

My theories on this can be summed up in the following:

There is significant hinting that Fitz is a beguiler, at least enough for people to have this theory. He's really good at getting people to do what he wants, his distinctive accent, his voice repeatedly assures Sophie in just a few words in a way it almost shouldn't.

But, hear me out. Alden Vacker would never cheat on Della. Think about it, it's such a random, out of character thing for him to do. His family's reputation is one of his main driving motives, and his own status as well as his children's is something that moves him to do things throughout the series. It's not his only motive, sure, but it is most definitely a very big motive for the way he behaves. Alden Vacker would never put his family in such a position of jeopardy as far as cheating on his wife. Sure, there are plenty of ways to get around it, but think about how horrible for the perfectly popular Vacker name that would be? It just doesn't add up.

So, then, how does Fitz still have a beguiler-y vibe to him?

Well.

Alden Vacker wouldn't cheat on his wife.

He'd do just about everything else, though.

My theory is that Alden Vacker has two talents. Beguiling and Telepathy. The beguiling has never been officially registered or trained, but he is most definitely a strong beguiler.

In fact, there's more evidence of Alden being a beguiler than there is of Fitz being a beguiler. Whenever Alden says, something, especially to Sophie, she accepts it, and moves on, even if he's clearly lying to her. This happens especially in the first books, and from then on, when he tells her there's no reason to worry, he is clearly trying on some degree to manipulate her emotionally and stop her from getting involved in what really does concern her. Also, in the first books, the emotions in Alden's words make Sophie feel instantly better and she's like, "Oh, well, okay." Over and over again. This girl has been thrust into a super strange world and she instantly trusts Alden and believes he's telling the truth about everything.

No one tells the truth about everything.

Alden Vacker being a beguiler would fill in a ton of holes about him and his manipulation and subtle edges that no one really focuses on. It explains why he has so many people wrapped around his finger, and how easily he can get people to do what he wants.

My theory also is that Fitz has no clue that he's a beguiler. His powers aren't as strong as his dad's, and it's never properly been trained. He manifested as a telepath early, so no one ever needed to test him and see if he was a beguiler. As far as he's even aware, he isn't. If you asked him, "Are you a beguiler?" he'd laugh and go, "What the heck? No! Of course I'm not!" and even then his words would leak with beguiling and you'd be convinced he was telling the truth.

Anyways, in theory, Alden Vacker and Fitz are both unregistered beguilers, and I honestly really like this idea much more than I like the idea of Alden cheating on Della with Alina. It just seems much more manipulative, shifty, and in character with how Alden does things than the idea of Alina being Fitz's mom. Moreover, it also explains all the wacky stuff that's off about Alden.

So, yeah! Them's my thoughts!

I read SuSu (terrible name) because of your last post and I've been enjoying it too (it's on my vanishingly small list of good ProFan fiction above the Last Orellian (RIP) and Mother of Learning). I broadly agree with your post, but I'm going to express some faith in the author to follow through in some form, if only because the story is so telegraphed towards antagonistic Artonians that it would be cartoonish for them *all* to be noble and kind. If the author didn't care about following through, why set such a strong indicator as a literally painfully tortured and enslaved servant? I guess the fail state is that the Artonian antagonists aren't the Contract or the Primary, but some kind of "fringe group" and the solution is for Alden to save his beloved colonial system from revolting because of the iron hand of Artonian ultra-nationalism and return it to the soft grasp of regular Artonian nationalism. That seems like an unfortunately plausible direction, given how sympathetically the Primary's compound has been portrayed... but idk, I smell a turning point on the horizon. My personal pet theory is that there's a perspective switch to Boe and that Alden's meant to be an unreliably pro-artonian narrator given he's a high school age guy who has been given a range of special help directly from his brain AI. That's maybe a long shot. Well, whatever. I'm not bored of SuSu, at least, so it hasn't committed the cardinal sin of WN's yet. Plot progression continues, however slowly, and things can still happen. Thanks for the recommendation post, I certainly wouldn't have checked out a story called "Super Supportive" without a good reason to.

Oh, and btw, does Alden's relationships with Lute and Stu'arth read kind of gay to you or is this a hallucination on my part? Both guys have had an "awkward meet the parents" session and there just seems like Killua/Gon levels of instant closeness between a sunny personality protagonist and his standoffish companion from a family of cold power brokers. I don't think the author intended it, (and I actually think they added that bit about Lute liking that rabbit girl b/c of it) but I was definitely going pride flag emoji question mark in a couple of places.

the only story in the progression fantasy/litrpg/etc space that i've really enjoyed and kept up with has been super supportive, tho that's with the caveat that the first sixty chapters are basically a self-contained novel that is pretty good, and then the next uh hundred and thirty chapters spend a lot of time defusing a lot of the setup. it's not just the slice-of-life stuff that predominates, it's the part where the story slowly picks away at the setup

like so, this is gonna have spoilers for the first chunk of super supportive. i've already made a post about this before i think but this will be post #2 i guess.

so super supportive introduces the state of the world: it's like 2040, and aliens contacted earth in the 1960s and brought with them all sorts of cool technology, intergalactic communication, and also the system. magic is real and aliens can do it and now with the system some people will get selected to have superpowers and get to go on quests to alien planets and get fabulous quest rewards (further superhero powers!) for doing so! wow everybody wants to be a superhero because it's so cool!

oh yeah so the technical term for the system is 'the interdimensional warriors contract', and earth is tithed to submit people to it. the aliens get to choose who. and if they choose you, you can't refuse. you also can't really refuse a summons. one of the most popular, to the aliens, classes is the one where you're just a personal assistant. classes with actual superpowers also sometimes get summoned away on some quest and are never heard from again. sometimes they get death notifications, months or years later, but sometimes not. you don't get to pick your class either; those get assigned to you, though you can swap classes with somebody else during a brief provisional period after you've been selected but before your superpowers come due. also, humans have no clue how to really use the system; the aliens make a big point of not telling anybody anything about how it's put together or even things like "these skills are good and these other skills suck". part of the 'appeal' stat involves mental changes to make you more sociable and agreeable.

they do pay superheroes for their work. but they can't really say no to a job, or control what they do. one early example of 'tasks superheroes get summoned to do' is 'help evacuate a dangerous research station' 'but only our contracted employees; explicitly do not allow the other staff who have not contracted to our corporation to leave'.

also, a major character early on is: literally an imprisoned slave who's chained to his desk and has a geas over him such that he's not able to do things like 'express preferences'. some alien wizard just dropped him down at the embassy and he's been stuck working there for decades now. i'm sure it's fine.

so as it goes through the early chapters and these things get revealed there's a lot of tension between how everybody in-universe thinks about this ("superheroes cool") and the out-of-universe information, in which it's clear this is something more like indentured labor. there's a lot of ominous weight about the power differential there. this is a world where magic is real, the universe runs on magic, aliens can use magic, but humans can't. and the magical system aliens have put in place on earth is one that is explicitly gamified with pretty tokens and prebuilt skills and nothing even approaching, like, information on how it works.

so that's interesting! and then the first 'book' ends and the main character gets back to earth and it seems like there's a lot of backing-off of those implications. all the aliens we meet are super cool and nice and honorable. despite some gesturing at various factions of aliens, there hasn't really been a lot of followthrough on, like, the alien politics involved or how they're set up. so i'm still reading because i think it definitely still has promise, & it's written in a fairly engaging fashion, but all of this is basically contingent on it actually having a good payoff for all the buildup, & i'm not really sure that the author really cares about that stuff specifically.

Rereading the KOTLC series Pt. 1

Rereading the KOTLC series, starting with the first book. Most of this is just me joking around but some of it is me actually complaining. How you’ll be able to tell the difference is your problem, not mine. Also, I am a staunch Forbidden Cities stan and Lost Cities anti. This will, in fact, reflect in how I reread this series.

Her parents said it was too much attention, too much pressure, and she was too young. End of discussions.

For those that are confused, the book is referring to Sophie’s parents and their reasons for not wanting her to go to Yale.

I get that they wanted to keep her from the spotlight… but isn’t that overdoing it a bit? Going to Yale will be huge in ensuring their daughter is successful in life, but they don’t want her to go because they don’t want her in the spotlight? Really?

Couldn’t they just postpone it and say that she had to wait until she was a couple years older and more mature? Why cancel it altogether? I really don’t see how that’s beneficial to Sophie and her future.

I know I’m being a bit nitpicky but that is so weird. I’d be so resentful if my parents kept me from attending an Ivy League.

She’d never seen eyes that particular shade of blue before—teal, like the smooth pieces of sea glass she’d found on the beach—and they were so bright they glittered.

This is so cheesy that I can’t tell if I love it or hate it. Also, how was she able to see his eye color from that far? Are they that bright?

Btw wouldn’t having teal eyes (and from how they’re described, they’re really bright and obvious teal) like really difficult to match with clothes? I feel like that’d be annoying. Plus, if they’re too bright, their eyes probably look really tacky.

And she couldn’t place his accent. Kind of British, but different somehow. Crisper?

Are they gonna hire a British boy to play Fitz? I hope they hire a British boy to play Fitz.

If Fitz wasn’t a literal child, I’d be unimpressed with how he came to the conclusion that she was hearing the thoughts and not their actual voices. If he came to that conclusion that fast, I’d be surprised if he wasn’t coming to the conclusion that every other human he met was an elf.

That’s such a weird conclusion to come to lmao. Just because his name isn’t common doesn’t mean it’s something to actively point out. She literally lives in California. She’s definitely heard weirder names.

Also, Fitz isn’t even that weird. It’s just not a name you’d hear in America as often.

“We need to get out of here,” Fitz warned, pointing to the driver, who was staring at them like he’d witnessed a miracle.

What ever happened to that guy? Did they ever like erase his memories too?

They took off running, though no one was following, and for the first time in her life, Sophie missed hearing thoughts. She had no idea what Fitz wanted--and it changed everything.

This could’ve been interesting if it were focused on more. It was interesting that Sophie had to control her impulses throughout the first book but, considering that the entire series so far only spans out about three or four years, I’m surprised that she hasn’t gone out of her way to read people’s minds more often. I certainly would’ve, especially with how much they hide from her while using her ignorance to manipulate her. I would’ve disregarded all their stupid rules by now.

My father sent me to find you. We’ve been looking for a specific girl your age, and I was supposed to observe and report back to him, like always.

I’m still in mild disbelief that Alden trusted his son to go out into the Forbidden Cities to look for one girl out of nearly eight billion humans. That’s impossible. It’s also really dangerous for Fitz, especially since he’s not all that aware of the true horrors of the human countries and what kind of people lurk in them.

Maybe if Fitz had found Alden and Quinlin’s documentation from their work on finding Sophie and had snuck out on his own to try and (stupidly) go out looking for her, it would’ve made more sense. The Black Swan could’ve led him to her without him knowing and it wouldn’t be as problematic, especially since I don’t think Messenger even considered that factor when writing the book in the first place.

“You’re really one of us.”

Fitz makes it sound like he’s in a cult. It’s so funny to me lol.

 He shrugged. “Laws are rarely broken.”

Really? Even the stupid, nitpicky ones that are unnecessary and only exist to make life more difficult? Damn, elves are so boring.

She thought she had him stumped with that one, but he just laughed again. “That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Who came up with that?”

Okay, I get that the reason Messenger doesn’t offer an explanation is because it really isn’t possible, but it is kind of annoying to read the elves disregarding research and knowledge that’s compounded over centuries with no explanation. She should’ve just made it magic. Especially when considering the fact of the fcking Void and stuff.

“Well, it’s like saying, ‘Hey, Sophie, take everything you’ve ever learned about anything and throw it away.’

“Actually, that is what I’m saying.”

This is my favorite line in the entire series, hands down.

“Humans do the best they can--but their minds can’t begin to comprehend the complexities of reality.”

Those are brave words coming from someone whose mind would completely break down if they felt an ounce of guilt. Like, gimme a break. We’re the ones with the fragile minds? Please.

Considering the state of your world, the fact that you’ve been fighting a rebel group that you should’ve been able to locate easily with advanced satellite technology or something like that, and that I’ve read about y’all doing the same shit over and over again while expecting different results, I sincerely doubt the validity of that statement.

The Ancients didn’t want violence, so they disappeared, forbid any contact with humans, and left them to their own devices. You can see how well that’s working out for them.”

You mean like how we’ve become one of the most advanced species in the world with the largest population by far?  Yeah, it seems to be working out great imo.

He lived with you and your family for his duration of his internship, in his whole stay, he collected eggs in your parents’ coop, he cooked various filipino dishes, desserts and more.

He fed them all to you btw, he was a god at cooking and his tapsilog was bomb.

you would buy a bunch of ingredients you think would go well with dishes when you were overseas with Niccolo.

You both decided in living in the Philippines, you guys were just barely there and it ended up being a vacation home.

He inherited your family’s restaurant, in which you guys barely could travel. Everyone called him Kuya Nico.

He loves cooking Kare-Kare and his costumers always demand it, it’s basically his best selling dish.

He struggled with speaking with customers sometimes, but you helped him with some language lessons.

He wore a Barong for your guys’ wedding. He looked handsome.

Onyankopon

It was kinda funny how you met, you were on a hike with your friends and you slipped and basically tumbled into Onyankopon. 

You struggled with English and could only form broken sentences, but he didn’t care, he even went as far as learning how to speak filipino instead so you wouldn’t have to struggle with having to find the words to explain.

He was kinda nervous to meet your family, he knew he had an accent when speaking filipino so he didn’t think your family would understand him well.

Your mom and dad adored him! They welcomed him with open hearts and open arms, his routines consist of helping your dad with feeding the chickens, like Reiner, he too, is a chicken dad. He had the honour of taking care of your dad’s chicken’s baby chicks.

Visits to your home in the PH is very frequent, because Onyankopon wants to make sure his chickens are a-okay.

he likes to go to busy streets and try street vendor food, he likes the banancue stand so far, he never knew a friend banana with burnt sugar would taste so good.

he’s a movie watcher and a listener, he probably listens to both modern artists like Ex Battalion, and old artists like Eraserheads.

His guilty pleasure is watching filipino romance movies, his secret favourite movie is Imagine You and Me.

I think in his early life (before Sophie) he has depended on Keefe for emotional support and so has Keefe so I definitely see the bromance

Most noticeably he’s more hung on about Cognates than anything really and Alvar

His family is a huge huge deal in the Lost Cities and to be tarnished due to Alden’s secret research, Alvar being part of the Neverseen, his two other children running away to join a rebellious group (as far as the public’s aware), being the only two Vacker children who ever attended Exillium, and the freaking Legacy; there was definitely a toll on him

Which is why he thought it was best he wouldn’t marry an Unmatchable in order to restore the family name

But Sophie going against Cognate stuff and not telling him who her mother was also had an effect in their relationship break

And that Sophie was really slowing the pace of their relationship

He’s loyal. Incredibly loyal. His family, his friends, his Cognate, if they’re in trouble, expect he’ll be there for you when it counts; you might expect him to be really blunt and hurtful at times but he really doesn’t mean any harm and he does genuinely care about the people he loves and he makes it up to them even going as far as near-death which is most I can say for some people

Final Note: A perfect Wonderboy with a not-so-perfect soul is usually what I think of him. There are good qualities here and there and everyone has bad spirits in them and Fitz is no exception to that. Before I said pressure was Dex’s problem, Fitz doesn’t look so much affected by this because he’s been pressured all his life. Grades, appearance, his dad, everything really so he’s used to it.

He’ll have cause to reconsider his emotional issues eventually but to hate him so passionately I believe isn’t fair. But that does not mean I will not be defending his wrongdoings because he has made some mistakes but he’s also done just as much good. He stuck with Sophie when she had trouble fitting in, watching from a distance to make sure she wasn’t harmed and also allowing her to find her place in Foxfire (others believe he just up and abandoned her as a mission completed sorta thing when she arrived but I don’t think that’s the case), he was willing to risk his life to involve himself in dangerous missions and that was even before he realized Alvar was involved with the Neverseen

I know I said I was gonna bounce until TROS,

but I just need to express my last minute theories(in case I’m actually right so can have proof and brag about it).

SO before we get in to anything, I should say that I have not read any leaks or things like that. I’ve only watched the things officially put out by Star Wars/Lucasfilm whatever. I also come from the Reylo/Bendemtion part of the fandom, so that’s the mindset I’m in. Now on with the theories:

Now originally I was of the opinion that Rey was nobody and I liked that and that was okay, and I didn’t want them to retcon it or anything, HOWEVER my mind has slightly changed. Kind of. Not really. Allow me to explain. 

The whole thing in TLJ is that we see that situation from Rey’s point of view. Rey believes that the people who left her on Jakku for drinking money and died were her parents. And they may very well be the people who raised her up until that point, ergo her parents, but they MIGHT not be her actual bio parents. And Kylo sees this in her mind and that’s why he thinks he knows the truth. Because essentially it IS the truth. And that is why, if Rey turns out to be SOMEONE in TROS, I don’t see it as retconning or anything like that. They will still honor what Rian did(and maybe planned) without undercutting it. Now don’t get me wrong, in no way do I think she is a Skywalker or a Solo, or even a Kenobi or a Palpatine(well her being a Palps is by this point the most likely of those, but ya kno). Now is the time for me to put my tinfoil tiara on because I think that it is very probable that Rey is

a clone

AND/OR a sleeper agent.

The reason I think this is because the very first thing I thought, before dismissing it as symbolism, in the cave scene when Rey saw her reflections was that holy shit is she a clone!? (later i was glad that i wasn’t the only one who thought that bc of all the theory videos floating around). I think that it might have been part of Palpy’s contingency plan to restart clone production, and especially how to clone someone force sensitive(that might be why the cloning guy from Mandolorian wants Baby Yoda’s dna or whatever), and he might have succeeded and Rey just happens to a random one of the clones, maybe she was misplaced, or planted on Jakku, who knows. I don’t think she is the clone template, but she might be. Then the dark Rey we’ve seen in the trailers will probably be one of the other clones. (or it could totally just be a vision and i’m just full of bs)

OR if she is a sleeper agent she might have been placed on Jakku for some reason, maybe her memories are real, maybe they are planted, who knows. Palps has some kind of trigger words or something to either wake her up, or put her under a Winter Soldier type like spell(who is the real Rey?).

The reason I kind of came back to these theories was because of the latest TV spots as of  the 14th of December.

But then again she could have been created somehow by the force to meet the darkness in Kylo OR if any of the above, or her being a Palpy is true, she might have been created by the dark(Palps maybe somehow) to meet Ben’s light, because Ben was conceived by light essentially, but then manipulated. Who knows, I certainly don’t.

This is basically a long way of saying I am now in the mindset that I don’t NEED Rey to be a nobody(everyone is somebody) just not a Skywalker or Solo, or even a Kenobi(though I like that headcanon the best), but it is also fine if she is.

(Also out of every brunette lady in Star Wars the internet have speculated being Rey’s mom I think Qi’ra is most likely. But I don’t really think she is.)

(Also, also, Rey got her name/made her name up from the helmet she had on Jakku.)

NOW onto some other stuff that could totally be separate from everything above. Theories and wishful thinking:

What’s going on with C-3PO is that he is getting his pre-end-of-ROTS memories back, sacrificing his memories after that, and that helps with something, perhaps telling Anakin’s true story to Ben (R2-D2 already knowing all of it kinda blows holes in this, BUT maybe C-3PO wouldn’t believe him or something and we need him to articulate to the audience idk.)

We’re going on a Horcrux hunt. That’s it.

Anakin force ghost DEFINITELY. (and maybe even a whole army of former jedi force ghosts helping to save the day idk, but Ani is DEF showing up or else i will sue)

(Anakin hearing Padme’s voice, him turning his head and smiling knowing his love is there for him in the cosmic force)

Ben finishing what his grandfather started(aka defeating Palpy) (also palpy being back doesn’t undercut anakin’s redemption bc it’s the thought that counts even tho palpy didn’t disappear)

If Leia dies(she might not, but probably will), it is from space radiation and she falls asleep peacefully, Connix(Billie) holding her hand because everyone else is off world. (ugh sob)

In the space battle(from the scene where we can see the Ghost and maybe the Colossus) we see glimpses from inside the ships(as we usually do), one of them being Hera Syndulla(the actual best pilot in the galaxy) going “phoenix leader standing by” and Jacen is with her casually using the force to grab stuff and shit PLEASE.

Alpha, Omega, Carol and Beth - It’s All Coming Together

Okay, I've been thinking about this theory for several weeks now and I'm just now getting around to doing it. I'm glad that I hadn't posted it for now because meeting the highwaymen did change it a little bit.

So, keep mentioning Carol symbolism, and how she ties into the Alpha arc. Let's start with the symbol we saw by Carol in 9x11. Everybody wondered what it was and we now know the highwaymen left it there.

Before we knew that, @bluesandbeth did a little research. She found this. 

Look similar? This is the first letter, Alef, of the ancient Phoenician alphabet which actually predates the Greek. Think about this. It's the first letter, which means it's the ancient Phoenician equivalent of “A” or “Alpha.”

At first, we thought this was another symbol for Alpha (the character). If that had been the case, it would simply have foreshadowed that Carol was on some sort of collision course with Alpha. And due to Henry spoilers, we already know that.

Now we know it wasn't Whisperers who left the sign here, but rather the highwaymen. In terms of the plot, the symbol does not represent Alpha. However, I think that symbolically, it still could. Let me explain.

If this symbol represents an A, it may not only be about Alpha, but about the A theme we’ve seen since S4. We’ve seen tons of As and there have been dozens of TD theories about what the A's might represent and how everything fits together. And yes, we do strongly believe the As either point to Beth or are somehow tied up in her arc.

So, then we wondered if maybe all the As in the A theme pointed toward Alpha. Alpha never seemed (to me, anyway) like she was quite as big a deal as other CB arcs, especially Negan. I felt like the show made a much bigger deal about Negan than they ever did about Alpha. People knew she was coming, of course, and she’s still a big deal, but there just wasn't as much hype about her as there was about Negan.

It's also important to note that spoilers have told us the Whisperer arc will be much bigger and more complicated than it was in the CBs. So that may feed into this. Maybe they always meant Alpha to be bigger, but there wasn't as much hype about it because in the CBs, she's really not bigger than Negan.

If the A's are specifically tied to Beth and she comes back during the Whisperer arc, then it really may be that all the A's pointed toward Alpha.

(P.S. I really think this Phoenician alphabet symbolism is a thing because if you look farther down, the 9th symbol in the alphabet, theth, looks damn close to the symbol Morgan keeps carving into trees.)

Alpha truly showed up in 9x10. Yes we saw her at the end of the previous episode when she took Luke and Alden captive, but we didn't see her face or really know who she was. Her true arrival was in 9x10 when she came to the gates of Hilltop.

So, Alpha showed up in an episode called Omega and in it, she's wearing an infinity belt. Guys, I literally have a post that I wrote after the finale of S8 called Alpha, Omega, the 8 Clocks, and Infinity Signs. Feel free to read it and others on the subject HERE, and I'm going to draw from them a bit, so I would suggest re-familiarizing yourself with what I'm talking about.

I won’t say much more about the infinity symbol, except that Alpha’s belt is important and it’s part of the Alpha/Omega symbolism. Read the above post for details. (Btw, I’m also pretty sure that, in addition to an infinity sign, her belt is a snake eating it’s own tail. That’s another common infinity symbol, and we can tie snakes to both Morgan (ouroboros) and Bethyl (Still).)

We’ve seen several “Alpha and Omega” references in the show throughout the seasons. Remember, the reason “Alpha and Omega” is a big deal is because that phrase is a very well-known name for Christ. He says he is Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. And of course Beth is the Christ figure. In other words, Alpha and Omega is both a Christ and a resurrection symbol.

One of the more references to this phrase was in 7x16 when Sasha died. In a flashback to her and Abraham talking, Abraham said, "alpha to omega, battlefield to beach." I was very excited about that at the time, not only because of the Alpha and Omega, but because of the “battlefield to beach.”

The “battlefield to beach” was exciting because of all the beach/ocean/Oceanside/water symbols we've seen around Beth.

But let's travel further back. To show how Carol is tied into this, we need to return to episode 6x13, The Same Boat. In this episode, Carol and Maggie were taken prisoner by Paula and her group of Saviors. This episode had tons of great Beth and Grady parallels. The biggest was simply that Carol and one of the Greene sisters were taken hostage by a group of baddies. TD gleefully pointed out that Maggie—the Greene sister in this instance—survived, which means Beth must have too.

But there were way more suspicious parallels than only that. For this episode, lots of people talked about (and I believe tptb leaked this) how the set they used came from the film, Saw. I’m going to give you some spoilers from that film. (It came out in 2004; if you haven’t seen it yet after 15 years, it’s really your own fault. 😉)

In the film, two men who wake up in a strange room. They’re chained on opposite sides of a room and spend most of the film figuring out how to get away. Lots of mind games ensue. In between where the two men are chained lays a dead body who has obviously been shot in the head. You can see his head wound and he lies in a puddle of blood.

After the entire movie happens, in a major twist at the end, that dead man stands up and is actually alive. In fact, he's the one who put the two men there and set up this entire game. It’s a cool film, but the point is, they used that same set for 6x13 and made heavy reference to a movie where someone who'd been shot in the head and was playing dead turned out to be alive.

Similarly, in this episode, Carol and Maggie are tied up on opposite sides of the room and there's a dead body between them. I this case, it's a walker, which doesn't get up and turn out to be alive at the end.

But…

What does this walker look like? That's right. It's a blonde, Beth-walker. We have a walker that represents Beth in a position that mirrors the character in Saw who is just playing dead (kind of like a possum?) and turns out to be alive at the end.

But there's more. And here's where Carol comes in. At some point Paula’s Saviors drag the walker out of the room. The walker has a crucifix on it and Carol takes it and holds it for most of the rest of the episode. 

Why does that matter? Because Beth famous wore a crucifix at Grady when she was shot.

We may not have understood why at the time, but we knew 6x13 was a retelling of Grady. 1) Carol + Greene sister taken captive by a bad group, 2) the idea of someone being shot in the head, 3) everyone assuming someone dead who in the end, and 4) the crucifix. We found other details as well, but these are the big ones.

Everyone’s already talked about how they’re setting up up a Carol vs. Alpha arc because of Henry and Lydia. My point here is that 6x13 ties Carol very heavily to Beth’s story line.

So, what does this have to do with S9? Well, in 6x13, we also had some major, heavy “Alpha and Omega” symbolism. When Paul first takes Maggie and Carol to the building, and they're both blindfolded, Paula references the Greek alphabet when using her walkie-talkie. He calls. Check out THIS POST for interpretations of her actual words I’ve done in the past. That was back when I hoped Beth would arrive in S8. For purposes of today's theory, it's only important that they use the Alpha and Omega symbolism, because we think it may have foreshadowed Alpha’s arrival in S9.

Check it out: Paula used the phrase “Alpha and Omega” in an episode that had massive Grady parallels. Then the villain Alpha arrives in an episode called Omega, an episode that also had massive Grady parallels (Lydia's prisoner exchange).

So, what does it all mean?

In a very general way, I think it's a good thing to have Carol and Alpha on a collision course because chances are Beth will be in the mix somewhere, too. In other words, it’s another way to say this will probably lead to Beth's arrival in some way.

This next part of this is a little bit more conjecture, but I think it's worth noting.

I’ve said that I think when Ezekiel "dies" it will actually be a death fake out. Which means Carol and Ezekiel will have a very similar, if not identical, arc to what Bethyl (and now Richonne) do. Namely, that one of them thinks the others dead when they're really not.

This is where things get really complicated but interesting. If I'm right about Ezekiel having a fake out and Cazekiel repeating Bethyl’s arc, then the Carol/Beth entanglement takes a whole new meaning.

For example, Carol being 6x13 probably foreshadowed that eventually Carol would have an arc much like the one that started it, Grady. I also think that's true of the references to the serious piggyback we’ve seen around Carol. Remember that in S7, she read a book that had the piggyback on the front and that was right after Ezekiel came to see her, when he was still courting her, but she wasn’t open to the relationship yet. 

Then we saw another one this season on the poster at the movie theater. So, of course, those are things we link to Beth, and rightly so, but I also think they foreshadow a similar arc for Carol and Ezekiel.

We can even take this back to Consumed. Carol went with Daryl into Atlanta to search for Beth. 

Plot-wise, it didn't really have to be her. The same stuff would have happened if Michonne had gone with him or Maggie or anyone else. Maggie might have made more sense because she and Daryl were the ones closest to Beth. Now, four seasons later, we can see that there was a bigger plan in place. They had Carol accompany Daryl, not to tease a certain ship as so many have claimed, but because it foreshadowed that eventually, she would have a similar arc to the one about to play out in Atlanta. 

Remember we saw the toy tiger on her bunk, which foreshadowed Shiva and the Kingdom. We never realized it before, but seeing the tiger and this foreshadow specifically in 5x06 ties the Kingdom to this death fake out arc.

Once again, this shows how much planning and how far in advance the writers plan for the show. At the very least, they were already planning Carol's also arc in S5 (toy tiger) but we already know Rick's departure was planned in S4, so I think most of this has been planned since S4 as well.

Another idea I’ve been toying with: Remember that in 6x13, Carol took the cross, and it was specifically Beth who wore the rosary around her wrist at Grady. That made me think that maybe it won’t be Ezekiel in Beth's place, but actually Carol. You would think her taking the cross would make her Beth, symbolically. 

On the one hand, it would be super crazy if Carol “died" or disappeared. Not only have they leaked things to try and make us think Ezekiel is dying, but Kirkman has said Carol is probably the one character he’ll never kill off. Perhaps that was always a tease and a foreshadow. No way to tell yet if they’ll handle it like they did Beth’s arc and the audience will think they’re dead too, or if they’ll do it like with Andy where the audience knows they’re alive, but TF doesn’t.

Despite all this, I’m not convinced it will be Carol rather than Ezekiel who gets the death fake out. Carol and Daryl are very similar, which they’ve confirmed over and over again. And ever since Ezekiel appeared in S7, we instantly saw parallels between him and Beth, because they’re very similar. 

Ezekiel and Beth are the positive ones that have a lot of faith, where Carol and Daryl have a tendency toward isolation and self-destruction. Overall, it makes more sense for it to be Ezekiel who gets the fake out. Carol may have taken the rosary in 6x13 simply to foreshadow the arc. Ezekiel wasn’t in the show then, so it had to be her who took it. Anyway, just some stray thoughts.

That's most of what I wanted to say concerning this. Back when the prisoner exchange happened, we had the symbol, we had Carol on an obvious collision course with Alpha, and we had the Alpha/Omega symbolism which immediately made me think of S6.

For me, this all came together as a complete picture of what they've been planning for Carol for a long time. And it points to Beth's return as well.

I’ve said both these things before but 1) Beth’s line in Still that mentions herself, Michonne, Carol, and Maggie foreshadow these four death fake out arcs. And then there’s the pickle story which foreshadows that three of the apparent deaths will be resurrected. We know Glenn is dead for real, so that means the other three—Rick, Beth, Ezekiel—will turn out to be alive. We can already confirm Rick is, so we’re just waiting for confirmation on the others.

In closing, let me give a short reiteration on the highwaymen. If the leader, Ozzy (Wizard of Oz reference, btw) represents Santa Clause/St. Nick, and St. Nick brings Beth back to Daryl, and St. Nick resurrects the three people in the pickle story, then it kind of suggests the highway men will in some way will bring these three characters that TF believe are dead back to them. Well, now these highwaymen have entered the story, and it was their sign we saw, which may be part of the A theme.

If the A's have pointed to Alpha all along, perhaps it shows that we’ll see the resurrections during this arc. Meanwhile, spoilers tell us we will see snow in the S9 finale, so we already know we’ll have a Christmas theme. See how this is all coming together?

Beth may or may not show up in the finale (I really hope she will) but if she doesn't, this arc is still very on track to bring her back. And we’ve said before, S10 will have a lot of important events in it. 

I'm thinking that's when Ezekiel's death fake out will happen, there's only X symbolism, and that's when Michonne will leave (which means she must know Rick is alive and therefore the resurrections have begun). 

And can I just say, I think Rick and Beth's resurrection must happen either concurrently, or else Beth’s will happen first. Either way, we’re coming up on it pretty quick here, whether she arrives this season or not. Thoughts?

SOLO stuff:

 SPOILERS AHEAD

- han and chewie’s relationship was the best part of it

- alden was alright, he did his own version of the character. didn’t love it but didn’t hate it either. i still think they could’ve cast someone with more physical resemblance to han or at least someone who has similar voice. sometimes it was hard to connect to him and think that’s han but slightly younger

- chewie stole the movie for me. the most emotional moment was when he bonded with some of the wookiees :’) (yeah the moment was brief but extremely adorable). he was just soooooo great <3 i love him so much

- i like some of the locations, new creatures and droids. however, i wish they mentioned some planet names in the movie? like, it would’ve been helpful.

- it’s an enjoyable flick, packed with action. humor was just okay for the most of it

- donald as lando was fine. however, i felt like his presence was minimal and didn’t really make that much of an impression on me? 

- first, didn’t like L3′s design. second, i understand that droid rights is a very important issue but i really didn’t need that mentioned every. few. minutes. of her screen time tbh (many of you will disagree but i found it really annoying)

- i had zero interest in new characters (especially qi’ra, dryden and tobias) (i keep calling him “matias” for some reason)

- generally speaking it had a lot of scenes connecting to prequels and also OT. but then again, i wouldn’t count this as criticism because, lbr, every new SW movie has done this (always connecting or paralleling scenes to older movies). they know fans love that. they like profiting on nostalgia, but also shitting on fans by telling us LeT The PasT Die, SW needs to become something else, stop living in the past! but they also like to earn money off of old characters, rebellion era, prequel references, etc lol. 

- romance was generally so damn underwhelming, han and qi’ra have no chemistry and i wish it wasnt pushed as hard. not even gonna comment hints @ lando/L3 having s*x, YIKES. val/tobias (that’s his name?) was also just thrown in because... of course she died few minutes later and it was mostly used just to show him grieve (about 2 minutes). thandie was criminally underused and it made me mad (this was like paige all over again). cant wait for new episode of westworld so i can fully enjoy her talent <3. 

- speaking of gross relationships dryden/qi’ra is another EVEN BIGGER YIKES. it was kind of only implied but anyway :/

- dryden looked like the most typical villain they could’ve thought of. like, if there was a manual on how to write your average but boring villain - they ticked all the boxes. 

- maul cameo was a bit random, but i get that they wanted to re-introduce him because of obi-wan movie (lmao if  they’re even doing this movie). but i dont care about his character so it made me feel mostly indifferent. some nitpicking ahead but i dont get the point of igniting the lightsaber in that scene? maybe it was all “hey guys, remember the prequels? the first movie we all like to forget sometimes? remember this guy was the sith, “killed” by obi-wan? see, he still has his lightsaber. and no he didnt die btw, you just need to watch two spin off shows to find out or buy novels, comics, etc”. or maybe just to intimidate qi’ra? dunno, it looked weird either way

- never understood why qi’ra went for han first during the fight scene when she clearly could’ve attacked dryden, without the whole drama and trying to make it look like kylo/rey/snoke throne room volume 2.

final verdict: 6.5/10, it’s pretty much in the ranks of TFA for me, but certainly better than TLJ... which isn’t a great achievement. it was decent and enjoyable to some extent (even though i spent most of this post um... being kinda negative), but it didnt make any emotional impact on me PERSONALLY, except like one scene or two. BUT if you guys completely enjoyed this movie - it’s totally fine and i get it.
