Ezelliot Leviathan's Happiest Snowcall Day 8

Title: I Want a Hippotamus for ~~Starlight~~ Snowcall

    Snowcall had come, the longest night of the year. Most children had already been put to rest, dreaming of the Snowmother taming the black wolf and white wolf just for one night so that she might deliver them presents and fill the first day of winter with delight.  All except the eldest prince of the seas, who in his many attempts to spy the Snowmother, had failed to do so.

    Yachai spent many Snowcall Eve's setting up traps, trying to stay up late and catch her in the act. When his siblings were born, he thought he might have the upper hand, his parents both distracted by them far more than him, and yet, his father was always one step ahead of him, especially the pirate king. Most mornings, he'd wake up to the holiday having passed out, or caught in his own trap.

    This year he was sure it'd be different. He'd drank an entire pot of coffee, one he made himself and ensured couldn't be sprinkled with sleeping powder. Aside from that, he made no attempts to foil or ensare the Snowmother. He was simply just going to sit and wait and keep himself caffeinated, believing that his trickery had been his downfall. If he simply did nothing, his parents would have no reason to suspect him further. He could simply be seen as a young mature Catter. Or so he thought.

  After feigning sleep, he waited for the rest of the family to retire, and once the pirate king's snores rattled the cabin, he got up and hurried downstairs in wait. And so he waited...and waited...Until finally, he heard the strangest of sounds...grunting.

    His ears perked. This was not the usual noise that he'd been explaining was simply the pirate king frustrated unable to sleep...no, it was coming from outside. Hurrying onto the deck, he looked around until spying a small hippo trotting around the main mast.        Eyes wide, he hurried to the creature before kneeling down. The creature innocently pushed it's nose into the boy's touch then snorted. Excited, the boy's tail flipped about while he started to pet the creature. A pet! He always wanted a pet...but there would be no way he'd be able to keep it. Both fathers refused to allow it, especially Ezelliot, knowing well that he'd be the one to take care of any mess it made aboard the ship.

    Panicking, he picked up the creature. It needed to be hidden. Struggling under the weight, he staggered back inside then shut his new friend in his room before making a small nest out of his dirty clothes that he'd hidden in his closet. He lowered his ears a bit as the creature grunted, petting him softly as he thought about what to do. A closet was no place for a pet. Frowning, he hugged the hippo, letting it munch on his shirt. Jumping, he pulled back then shook his head signing "No, bad" to the creature with a rapid head shake. Putting both hands on it's nose, he shook his head again then backed away slowly, ensuring that it stayed put.

   Hurrying to the galley, he pulled out some cabbages from the ice box then filled a large bowl with water. Heading back to his room, he paused near their family room, ears perked and tail high, the room somehow filled with presents while he'd been busy caring for his little friend. Brow narrowed, he huffed, stomping back to his room, feeling tricked once again by the Snowmother. Upon his return, he dropped his cabbages and bowl, the hippo much smaller than he remembered and laying on its side. Kneeling down, he picked it up, finding it to be soft and plush...no ounce of life left in it. Shaking, he swallowed, squeezing it a bit more before keeling over in a faint.

Ezelliot laughed softly as he watched Yachai lay on the deck, eyes glued to the stuffed hippo. All morning he'd been silent, barely a sign out of him as he concentrated on the stuffed plush. It had not left his sight all morning, much to the amusement of both parents.

 "We got him again. I wonder how many more years we have of this," the red-haired Catter sighed, feeding Khassandra some mashed-up plums.

"Who knows. When he gets the better of us, we'll just have to have him help us do it for the little ones," Juhnathan laughed, letting Rhion chew on a soft cookie in his lap.

 "Good, we're getting too elaborate keeping this up...We'll take him to see his little friend again someday. I wonder if it'll remember him."

"Ah...someday. About that..."

    Ezelliot turned, eyes narrowed, "You did send the hippo back to the mainland, didn't you?"

 "Well, I misunderstood Lord Ifrit's offer...it was more of a gift hippo than a borrowed one..."

  Yachai's ears twitched as his father started to scold the pirate king. Later that day, he was reunited with his hippo friend...and the king was gifted a shovel and some rubber gloves as an extra gift.

The San Diego Zoo is an iconic, award-winning, world famous zoo. Established in 1916, situated in the mesmerizing Balboa Park and home to over 3,700 animals of more than 650 species and subspecies, the zoo is also known for having one of the largest zoological membership associations in the world – almost a half million people! It was also the primary pioneer in the concept of open-air, cageless zoo exhibits (that simulate natural animal habitats) – much like you would find in our very own National Zoological Gardens of South Africa, aka Pretoria Zoo.

Having originally grown out of the abandoned exotic animal exhibitions of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, these days the San Diego Zoo sprawls across an area covering 40 hectares (about half of Pretoria Zoo’s size) of Balboa Park, and is jam packed with the  most remarkable, carefully crafted and maintained enclosures, exhibits, walkways and gardens.

As an addition to exploring the park on foot, the zoo also offers a pretty neat, open air guided bus tour that traverses about 75% of the park, as well the Skyfari – an overhead gondola lift that gives you an aerial view of the park down below.

The exhibits are all designed around particular habitats, which then groups together animals that tend to be found side-by-side in the wild, usually alongside with that habitat’s native plant life. For example, there were the gorillas in an African rain forest, polar bears in the Arctic taiga and tundra, and elephants and giraffes on dusty African plains.

Massive free-flight aviaries are littered about, and on top of all that, the zoo also maintains its grounds as an arboretum, with a botanical collection that includes more than 700,000 exotic plants!

The animals, the crafted environment, all of it just comes together to form an absolutely breathtaking zoo experience, a place where you can happily spend pretty much an entire day (which essentially I did) moving through the various habitats and exploring all the nooks and crannies of this wondrous zoo.

So a quick rundown of the current exhibits then: Monkey Trails and Forest Tales (monkeys and other animals from the rainforests of Asia and Africa), Owens Aviary and Scripps Aviary (tropical and local birdlife), Panda Canyon (pandas, takins and snow leopards from China), Urban Jungle (giraffes, gazelles, cheetahs and Indian rhinos), Polar Bear Plunge (polar bears, reindeer and foxes of the Arctic), Discovery Output (lizards, snakes, turtles and frogs), Ituri Forest (okapi, duikers and hippos from the rainforests of central Africa), Elephant Odyssey (elephants, lions and jaguars), Gorilla Tropics (gorillas!), Absolutely Apes (orangutans and siamangs), Sun Bear Forest (Bornean sun bears, macaques and silvery lutung monkeys), Tiger Rivers (tigers and gharials of Malaysia), Outback (koalas, wombats and tasmanian devils), and the newly opened African Rocks – which unfortunately was still being built when I was there but which is a massive new addition to the zoo, featuring a variety of distinct African biospheres and the animals that they contain.

While not a massive fan of zoos or aviaries in general, I do understand the need for zoos and enjoy zoos which are really well put together – and in that regard the well financed San Diego definitely does not disappoint. Everything is colourful, the grounds are immaculate, the animals are all well looked after, and as a bonus, I saw loads of creatures that I would almost assuredly never encounter back here in South Africa.

A thoroughly enjoyable visit then, and just as it had been with my visit to Disneyland, I kind of really wished that I had my girls with me in order to show them around this remarkable space!

(Remember how I said that my phone was charging hence the distinct lack of photos of Balboa Park in general? Yeah well, I took a LOT of photos in the zoo!)

The hippotamus refuses to sleep. This is because he knows that the second he closes his eyes, he’ll come face to face with the little gnome-man who lives on the backside of his eyelids. The gnome-man eats fear. Once all pf the fear is eaten, the gnome-man leaves, and he takes the hippopotamuses face with him.

"OK Y/N, truth or dare?" Ara said as the bottle landed on you.

"Dare" you said, and immediately regretted it, as you saw the mischievous glint in her eyes.

"I dare you to Christmas Carol to every apartment on this floor" she laughed, as you stared.

"By myself?" You questioned.

"Yes and you have to wear these" Cho said putting a reindeer headband on your head. You sighed, and stood up, putting on your shoes as you left the apartment with some of your friends standing in the hall to watch.

"I can't believe I'm doing this" you mumbled as you approached the first door and gave a light knock, Christmas music cued on your phone.

"You have to knock louder than that!" Sena bellowed from down the hall.

A sigh left your lips as you knocked harder then started singing "White Christmas" as a cute older couple answered the door. As you finished they clapped, and thanked you. You smiled as they shut the door, and you moved to the next door. Luckily no one answered at the following three doors which meant one last door on this floor.

You gave a sturdy knock, and as the door opened you pressed play and started to sing "I want a hippotamus for Christmas".

Your eyes grew big, as Yeosang answered the door. It was him, the guy you had been pining over for the past year. The guy all your coworkers bugged you about anytime he came into the cafe. You could feel the blood rushing to your cheeks as he smiled at you, other guys suddenly joining him at the door. They all soon joined in on the song. Some of them getting far to into it, singing with actions causing you to giggle as you tried to continue with the song.

As it ended they started to applaud. You just laughed slightly, and with a small wave started to leave.

"Wait, y/n" Yeosang said, as he softly touched your shoulder. You paused and turned towards him, as a chorus of oohs and teasing came from behind him. Then one of the taller ones started ushering the rest of them back into the apartment.

"Yes?" You questioned.

"That was really cute" he smiled.

"Well, thanks." You laughed softly looking at the ground, playing with your fingers.

"You want to come in for some hot coco?" He asked gesturing behind him. You nodded smiling. As he turned around you looked down the hall to see your friends at the other end making kiss faces at you.
