natsu sends a photo of her first jersey on a professional team to shoyo, saying that he's the first to see it as it was shoyo who taught her how to fly.
"this jersey is my new wings, nii-chan," she announces cheerfully, the red fabric of the uniform matching her ginger curls. "now we can keep flying together!!"
needless to say, shoyo turns into a sobbing mess as he congratulates his lil sis, trying to blink his tears away. he never felt so proud before 🧡

HAIKYUU CHARACTERS MEETING YOU, THEIR IDOL PLAYER
a/n - so this was kinda inspired by the one piece swapped au :) but yeah basically it’s just them meeting you, a professional volleyball player for Japan that they’ve idolized their entire life and aspired to become like you 🫶
Warnings ⚠️ - g/n reader, famous volleyball player reader, this is not an x reader thing!!
are they having a seizure? A stroke? A heart attack? Maybe all three?? | “OH MY GO—“ they’re frozen mid sentence
.✩ hinata (when is bro not tweaking when he meets someone remotely cool?), nishinoya, tanaka (you made him and nishinoya freeze midair like when they saw johzenji’s manager), koganegawa, goshiki, yamaguchi, bokuto (he’ll unfreeze and then yap about how cool you are), yamamoto, inuoka, kinoshita, himekawa (he might’ve died standing up)
you’re scared of them because why are they just staring at you like they wanna murder you? | they want an autograph but are too afraid to ask you
.✩ kageyama, asahi (he doesn’t mean to bro 😭), aone, sakusa (bro doesn’t want germs on him but he also thinks you’re cool so he’s torn)
they’re so sweet, and they walk up to you with so much adoration your heart legit melts | “You’re so cool— you’re the reason I started volleyball and I’m so glad I did!”
.✩ hinata, nishinoya, kanoka, michimiya (she’s literally so sweet 😭), natsu, akane (she got into cheering because of you not her brother don’t tell him)
they’re all calm on the outside but inside they’re tweaking | “Can I have an autograph?” OH MY GOD IT’S Y/N L/N HOLY SHIT—
.✩ hoshiumi, kuroo, yaku, suguru, futakuchi, konoha, terushima
probably the most normal acting fans out of everyone | “Can I have a selfie with you? I’m a big fan of yours :)”
.✩ tendou, sugawara, ennoshita, iwaizumi (bro does not know how to smile for pictures tho), oikawa (he’s gonna do those finger heart things), matsukawa, hanamaki, daichi (also does not know how to smile for pictures plus he can’t figure out how to flip the camera), semi, aran, kai, komori, hirugami, akaashi
they don’t even look like they like you but they really do | “Can I have an autograph?” they say that as they’re looking at you like you’re a piece of trash
.✩ ushijima, kunimi, kenma (you’re his fav streamer), suna (his rbf is so bad) washio, shirabu (I don’t think he’s ever looked friendly in his life)
they’re very nervous and they legit cannot ask what they wanna ask without forgetting who they are where they are and what’s happening 😭 | “Uh— what’s my name for you to sign? Oh! Right— yeah my name is uh— crap what is my name?”
.✩ yamaguchi, hinata, kindaichi, himekawa, kinoshita, yachi (it’ll be a miracle if she actually is able to ask for a picture without dying of anxiety), kanoka, asahi (he forgot what he was gonna ask you too)
you’re a fan of them so now you’re tweaking because they’re asking YOU for an autograph/selfie | “Can I have a self—“ “YES.”
.✩ kenma (you’re literally a premium patreon), alisa, lev (bro him and his sister are so pretty), little giant, timeskip hinata (ninja shoyo bro 😭🙏)
you’re scared because why are they as tall as the BFG | “Can I have a selfie?” “Yeah sur— HOLY—“
.✩ hyakuzawa, tsukishima, ushijima (“hello there” bro has the high ground 💀), hakuba (that one dude in kamomedai), koganegawa, hirugami (not the kamomedai guy his older brother), lev, meian, sokolov (I have no idea who this is I just know he’s 6’7), barnes (also don’t know who this dude is but bro’s 6’9), taichi, tomas
they’re so chill and friendly that you become friends
.✩ fukunaga (he’s hilarious dude no wonder he’s a comedian post timeskip), kai (the guy is a saint 😭), aran, sarukui, konoha, tendou, kiyoko, sugawara, matsukawa, hanamaki
a/n - fukunaga is underrated guys he’s hilarious

“coach! i brought my sister with me today!”
natsu squeaks and hides behind her brother as his teammates approach. she feels small against such professional players, but relaxes when bokuto catches her eye with a grin and raises his fists in the air. “hey, hey, hey, natsu-chan! long time no see!”
she gives a timid nod. miya leans forward, a finger wrapped around his chin. “followin’ in yer brother’s footsteps, eh? i bet ya also have an impressive spring in yer step.”
hinata grins. “of course, but her jump isn’t as high as mine!”
“given that she’s almost the same height as you despite being younger,” sakusa comments, “i wouldn’t be surprised if that were the case.”
“omi-san, you don’t have to be so blunt!”
coach joins them, his voice is warm. “it’s nice to meet you, natsu. we always welcome friends and family to our court.” when his eyes cut to meian and barnes, they turn away, whistling innocently. “your brother mentioned that you also play volleyball?”
“yes! i’m a wing spiker at niiyama girls’ high school.”
“natsu-chan,” miya pipes up, “lemme toss to ya later!”
meian claps his hands together. “let’s get back to work. natsu, feel free to watch from the sidelines. if you have questions, i’m sure our coaches can help.”
she nods and bows. “thank you for letting me watch!”
the players return to their warm-ups, and hinata leads her to the bench. foster calls for a huddle, and hinata pats her shoulder on his way over. “watch what your brother is made of!”
she barely has time to relax before a manager slides next to her, eyes shining. “we’ve seen a few family members come by, but you’re the first that also plays volleyball. are you here to get the inside scoop?”
“oh…i just wanted to visit and…” natsu trails off. “i guess i do want to see what it’s like, and if it’s something that i want to do.” despite being in her second year, the future remains at the forefront of her mind. she enjoys volleyball, the thrill of competition, the results of hard work, but she can’t help but wonder: what if her future lies beyond the court?
her brother knew that volleyball would remain central to his life when he was her age. natsu, though, doesn’t feel the same, although her coaches said she has a future as a pro. she likes studying too, and has briefly looked at universities with a good volleyball team. she knows some of hinata’s teammates went to university first, like sakusa and bokuto. some entered the v. league straightaway, like miya and kageyama. either way, they’ve gathered here at the top, wholeheartedly dedicated to the sport.
the players practice their serves. miya works on his jump floater-spike serve combo, and hinata also works on his jump floaters, along with meian. barnes, bokuto, sakusa, and adriah stick with jump serves, the ball traveling across the court with frightening speed. it’s impressive that inunaki can pick them up at all.
afterwards, they move to spikes. natsu has always been enraptured by spikers seemingly able to float in mid-air. when it’s her brother’s turn, he makes his approach and jumps, easily reaching the top of the net. his ball lands just before the end line.
practice ends all too soon, and as some players shuffle toward the locker room, her brother bounces toward her, ball in hand. “natsu! let’s play together! that’s okay, right, coach?”
he nods, warning not to overdo it. hinata grins at her, and she smiles back, taking her jacket off, reaching into her bag for kneepads and a hair tie. she joins him, along with miya, sakusa, and bokuto.
“natsu-chan!” miya calls out. “lemme toss to ya! if yer better than shoyo, i’m gonna ask coach to replace him with ya.”
“atsumu-san!” hinata yells indignantly. natsu laughs, squeezes the ball tighter in her hands. she stands away from him, already positioned at the net. does one of the best setters in japan really want to set for her?
“go for it, natsu-chan!” bokuto cheers.
she lets out her breath and focuses. tossing the ball in the air, she makes her approach. miya raises his hands, watches her out of the corner of his eye. then, he sets it. she jumps.
it’s not too high, nor too low. not too far from the net, not too close. it’s just…perfect. her arm swings down, the ball slamming to the floor. she lands with thundering applause from behind. “yep, both ya and yer brother are monsters,” miya comments, shaking his head.
“natsu! nice kill!” hinata has his hands up for a high-five. she slams her palms against his. “let’s play some 2-on-2! team hinata is here to beat all of you!”
“i’d like to see you try.” sakusa slinks under the net, along with bokuto. “miya, you can sit out first.”
“fine, but don’t cry ta me when ya get smoked by the sibs,” miya scoffs, moving off the court. natsu glances at her brother, who only gives her a reassuring thumbs-up.
for the rest of the afternoon, she feels like she’s in a daze. her brother sets to her, and although they aren’t like miya’s, it’s enough to get the ball from one side of the court to the other. her receives aren’t great, so sakusa often targets her, and hinata berates him for it. she manages to receive one of miya’s jump floaters though, but his spike serves go untouched, except when hinata receives them.
by the end of the session, they’re all drenched in sweat, heaving for air. natsu braces her hands on her knees, feels an arm slide around her. “how was it?” hinata asks.
“it was fun.” natsu straightens, watching miya stop bokuto from taking his shirt off, sakusa already halfway toward the locker room. “i could tell they were all holding back.”
“just a bit! atsumu-san never holds back with his serves though, and omi-san is always serious about his spikes. bokuto-san, though…you’re too young to receive his spikes at full power. your arms might fall off,” hinata says, half-serious. natsu still remembers the story of an unfortunate opponent that got hit in the face with one of his spikes. it dislocated his nose. “natsu, it’s okay if you don’t continue with volleyball.”
she jumps, caught by surprise by his words. her brother’s eyes are soft, hunched over slightly so they’re eye level with each other. “mom told me that you weren’t sure what to do after high school. you don’t have to go pro; there’re lots of teams you can join and play for fun! you could do what omi-san or bokuto-san did and go to university first and play there. or you could be like me and go halfway across the world. i’ll support you!”
“thanks, nii-chan.” natsu lifts her head, eyes scanning the stands that line the gym. if she retires her court shoes, would she miss the roar of applause, the sweet thrill of victory? if she surrenders her books, would she regret not having gone to university, not having something to fall back on? “i guess i’ll need to think about it more. but…”
her eyes drift to miya and bokuto, closer to the locker room entrance now. miya turns and shouts at them, telling them to hurry so they can get dinner. “i’m happy that you picked the jackals. everyone is so nice.”
“right? i’m sure wherever you go, you’ll also have people that’ll support you.” he points a thumb to himself. “that includes me, too!”
she laughs, turning to give him a hug. no matter what path she picks, she knows that volleyball will always connect them.

hinata and natsu | then vs now
when natsu was around 7 or 8, she would often ask hinata to teach her volleyball and play with her.
"oniisan!" the little redhead would pout expressively, hugging her brother's knee. "you're making it easier for me. i want to do it like you! i want to jump!"
hinata could only smile kindly at his sister's restlessness, gently escaping from her grip to hand her the ball instead.
"i'll let you jump," he would vow in his best brotherly and reassuring tone. "but first, i need to teach you how to spike properly, and for that we'll need to practice a little more before i send you higher tosses."
"but you'll teach me how to fly, won't you? promise?" natsu would ask hopefully, accepting to let go of her sulking as she squeezed the ball against her chest.
"yes, i promise."
hinata would notice just how big the ball looked against natsu's small frame. he would fondly watch her try to clumsily hit the tosses he sent her, wobbling on her tiny feet then collecting herself to straighten up again. he'd stand behind her, showing her how to hold herself up and how to receive, although he himself barely mastered it. to other players, he would think, he probably looked just as defenseless. yet he would prove them wrong. and so would natsu, he knew. he would teach her.
years later, not much has changed. natsu still comes to hinata for advice, though she has grown just as tall as him, if not even taller. not much has changed, they still play volleyball together—except both are professional players standing on a bigger stage.
"oniisan!" she would pout in the backyard of their parents' house, swiftly receiving the ball that shoyo just sent her way. "don't you dare go easy on me!"
"as if i could!" it would be hinata's turn to dive forward, managing to save the ball at the last moment. he would smile back at natsu, rapidly getting back into position while she was getting ready to jump—something she had learnt from him.
"teach me that beach volleyball move next!" she'd add eagerly, having barely had enough time to catch her breath. she would already run to her brother's side of the court, shoving the ball into his hands. "the one that goes like vlam!" she'd try to mimic shoyo's moves, which would have both of them laughing. they spoke the same idiosyncratic language, filled with the same passion for vollyeball.
"then you'll use it against me!" hinata would chuckle knowingly.
"isn't that what you do all the time?" she'd arch an eyebrow and he would have to plead guilty.
"alright, let's do this!"
in the end, no matter how big the stage they stood upon has got, very little has changed over the years. natsu had started playing volleyball because of her brother, and is still aiming to become just as good as he is, and even, better. in the little backyard of their childhood house, the siblings' shared love for volleyball lives on.

10,000 miles away (yet I’ve never felt closer to you)
Kageyama tobio / Hinata shoyo
Rated T, 2.2k, post timeskip
...............
Outside of Tokyo Haneda Airport, a teary-eyed set of goodbyes are occurring between the Hinata family and their son; their, as Hinata’s parents would say with pride, star, who is moving across the world from their small town of Musashi Japan to Brazil: to improve strength and skill in order to pursue his dream of becoming a Professional volleyball player.
Hinata hugs his mother tight, “Mom, thank you for always believing in me. It was you who first let me play volleyball, and your constant love and support have gotten me to where I am today. I couldn’t have done it without you.”. He doesn’t mention it when he hears her sniffle slightly, just closes his eyes and hugs her tighter.
She pulls away and cups his face gently. “Shoyo, go do big things, my golden boy.”, she smiles and kisses him on the cheek, drying her eyes with a handkerchief.
He moves to his father, embracing him as well. “Love you, Dad. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me, what am I going to do without you?”, he smiles into his shirt.
His dad laughs, clapping a hand against Hinata’s back. “I’m sure you’ll figure something out. You’re a Hinata, there’s nothing you can’t do.”
A small force thunks against Hinata as his little sister tackles him, clinging to him as if she grips hard enough it’ll ground him to the island. “Why do you have to go so far away . . ? I’m gonna miss you so much, Sho.”, she mutters against his shirt, voice quivering with tears.
“I know Natsu, I’m going to miss you like crazy,” Hinata tells her, patting her head comfortingly.
“I’ll come home during the summers though, and maybe you can convince Mom and Dad to take a family trip to Brazil. If you come I’ll take you to a theater to watch a ballet performance, that’s a promise.
They have really fancy ones there you know? And make sure you get Dad to record every one of your recitals, I want to see them all.” She nods, sniffling into his t-shirt and leaving a damp patch behind.
Finally, he turns to Kageyama, his best friend of four years; and despite knowing what great opportunities Brazil will bring, Hinata finds himself wishing he didn’t have to say goodbye.
His heart hammers in his chest. The letter hidden in his jacket pocket suddenly feels as if it weighs a hundred kilograms; carrying the weight of years of longing glances, wistful daydreams, and secret feelings.
He wraps Kageyama in a bear hug and tries not to let emotions get the better of him, to focus instead on making this moment last. He smiles when he inhales and is hit with the scent of jasmine and sage, the smell of home.
For the last 4 years, they’ve been practically attached at the hip. For the next 2 years, they’ll go months without seeing each other, the longest separation of their lives (Excluding of course when they didn’t know each other).
He tries to keep things light and bury the thought that leaving Kageyama behind feels as unnatural as leaving his own head.
“Don’t you go replacing me while I’m gone, okay?”
Kageyama rolls his eyes and lightly punches Hinata’s shoulder. “As if I could. Nothing and no one could ever fill your dumb shoes.” His eyes are glossy with tears threatening to spill over, but Hinata pretends not to notice.
Kageyama hated showing vulnerability in front of anyone besides him, and he’d already cried plenty in Hinata’s bedroom last night which he proclaimed was “So embarrassing, I can’t believe I’m crying over you, Boke.”
Hinata pulls the letter out of his jacket and quickly presses it into Kageyama’s hands. It was now or never, his one perfect chance to confess everything he’s been too scared to say to Kageyama’s face, too tongue tied to even mutter in person.
“I wrote this for you. Don’t open it until you get home.”
His family gives him a knowing look, and he hopes he doesn’t look as sweaty as he feels when he responds with a pointed expression that screams "Please be subtle." Kageyama looks at him in confusion, but finally nods in understanding. They hug once more, heads tucked into the other’s shoulder, a final goodbye.
Hinata walks into the airport, turning to wave as the doors close behind him with a bittersweet smile on his face.
The airport processions go by without a hitch.
He checks in his luggage (Praying that nothing will be missing by the time he gets to Brazil), gets through security, and finds his gate with plenty of time to spare before his flight. Still, he feels a nervous stiffness throughout his body, each nerve ending a taut wire.
It was a huge decision he made, packing up his life and moving across the globe to follow his dream.
Well, one of his dreams.
He thinks of Kageyama and a future of waking up every day to the sight of him bathed in the
soft morning glow of sunrise, of golden bands sitting comfortably around their left ring fingers.
He thinks of the letter and how he poured out the contents of his heart in black ink against porcelain sheets of paper.
It had taken him dozens of times to get it just right, now he just hopes his feeling will reach Kageyama.
He decides to get Starbucks, perhaps some tea will help put him at ease. As he waits for his name to be called, he checks his watch. It’s been thirty-five minutes; Kageyama should be home by now.
Hinata wonders absentmindedly when he’ll read the letter, and whether or not he’ll hear from Kageyama before he boards.
That’s what he wants, or at least, he thinks it is.
Maybe it would be easier on him if he was already out of Japan when he finds out what Kageyama’s reaction is, but he’d rather carry a broken heart all the way to Brazil than have the other stress out waiting for Hinata to come down to earth and reply.
Miles away, Kageyama takes out the letter from his pocket.
He carefully rips open the vanilla envelope and extracts the folded pages, placing them down on the coffee table. Whatever Hinata has to say to him, it must be important.
He grabs the first page with a sigh, settles into the crook of his couch and begins to read.
My dearest Tobio,
.......

The Key to Love is Timing
Pairings: Hinata X Reader
Words: 3.5K
Summary: If the first confession fails... Just bottle it up for a few years and hope for the best? Hinata messed up the first time, but he's not one for quitting.
Notes: This has lots of manga spoilies. I just love time-skip Hinata and he deserves more content 🥰
Masterlist // Ko-Fi
Karasuno high school loomed in front of you. The place that served as a sanctuary for so many years, helping you build lasting friendships and memories in classrooms that would soon be filled with new freshmen to take your place. It was bittersweet knowing your locker would soon belong to someone else, but you could only hope it would serve them as well as it had you.
Almost everyone had left the school grounds since it was nearing sundown, but you needed a while longer to say goodbye. You trailed your hand down the granite pillar that held the small canopied entrance. You were never good with goodbyes, and it would be hard to leave your friends behind. You’d made your plans to keep in touch and although you were the realistic type you still held had hope it could work out.
There was only one person you had avoided talking to...
“(Y/N)!”
You inhaled slowly before glancing over your shoulder at the boastful voice coming from across the courtyard. Hinata. You were hoping you’d run into him, whether you’d let yourself admit it or not. You noticed his sleeves were rolled up his forearms and that the schoolbag hung casually over his shoulder contained his uniform jacket-the sleeve hanging out loosely-as he pushed his bike toward you.
“Hey, yourself,” you tightened the grip on your own bag and languidly came to meet him at the front of the entrance. He was slightly out of breath when he reached out, taking large gulps of air to gather himself before speaking.
“I was hoping you would be here. I lost track of time and was worried I missed you.” He gave a crooked grin that made your heart skip.
“Well, I figured it would take you forever to say good-bye to Kageyama.”
He tilted his head in confusion before his face lit up. “You were waiting for me?”
Your eyes widened at your mistake. “No. I mean, I didn’t not want to see you, like, if we bumped into each other that would’ve been cool, but I wasn’t purposely trying to waste time...”
Smooth.
You found yourself unable to meet Hinata’s eyes until you heard a lighthearted laugh. His genuine smile was framed with unruly autumn hair that contrasted the cherry blossoms of spring that were flying through the air. You broke your Hinata induced trance when you realized he had swiped your bag from your grip.
“Um, excuse me?”
Instead of responding he took to placing your bag on the opposite handlebar from his own bag and pushing his bike ahead of you. You blinked, confused, before catching up to the boy.
“Since when do you carry bags?” You raised an eyebrow while gesturing to the bike. “Usually you whine about how it’s abuse I’m making you push your own bike.”
“I don’t know. I just feel like it,” he shrugged and turned away from you which only raised your suspicion that he was up to something. If he tried to steal your bag or pull some last day of school prank on you… you were so not in the mood.
“Wait, where are we going?” You realized you’d just been following the familiar backroad without thought. “Are you walking me home?”
“Yes.”
“Then why aren’t we going to the halfway point? My house is completely out of the way.” You crossed your arms and narrowed your eyes at Hinata’s scrunched up face. “You’re acting really weird. Should I be concerned?”
“You ask a lot of questions.”
“Thanks. I’m thinking about doing it professionally.” You stuck your tongue out at his deadpan glare and ignored the grumbling that followed. You focused on the warmth in your chest as you teased him and not the lurking dread that dweld with every step closer to your house.
“When do you leave for University?” Hinata’s question made your stomach twist.
“April,” you shrugged. “I leave for Tokyo a few weeks before classes start.” The silence that followed was unbearable. “When… do you leave?”
“Two days.”
You nearly gave yourself whiplash with how quickly you turned to him. You had figured he would be leaving quickly, but you always envisioned a month or two at least. Your time had been wasted and you didn’t even realize.
“That’s…”
“Soon.” He finished. You nodded slowly. “I wanted to start training as soon as possible. I need to learn everything I can about beach volleyball so I can be the best player possible.”
“I’m so happy for you, Hinata.”
And you were. Even if the smile on your face felt a bit forced you knew that you truly meant those words. So you ignored the ache in your heart because it came from a selfish part of you that was scared to lose someone you cared too deeply for. Someone who had the courage to chase their passions to new continents. You shoved down the pain and focused on your admiration at his continuous drive for self-discovery and improvement.
There was no time to pity yourself.
“We’ve both got adventures ahead of us,” Hinata said with an ear to ear grin on his face. You could only nod in agreement because Tokyo was nothing like Brazil, but you had your own sense of self-discovery you supposed. Slowly, Hinata’s face dropped into something more weary and his eyes drifted to his feet. “But…”
“But?”
“It’ll be weird not seeing you all the time,” he started, lifting his head to the sky. You followed his gaze, but found nothing of interest beside the cloudless sky slowly fading to peach hues as the sun set. “I mean, you won’t be coming to my games or bullying me at school.”
“I don’t bully you.” You deadpanned.
He waved you off. “You won’t be able to come over and help me teach Natsu volleyball when she complains I’m not a good enough teacher either.”
“Well, not everyone understands your ‘wam’ and ‘zoom’ into a ‘fwump’!” You said while moving your arms into random receives and spikes to match the sounds.
“Nishinoya did,” he narrowed his eyes. “Whatever, the point is you’ll be gone and… I’m going to miss you.” He glanced over quickly. “More than the average person.”
“I’ll miss you too.” You nudged his shoulder. “Lighten up. You’re acting so weird today.”
“I’m not acting weird…”
“You are!” A gust of wind sent cherry blossoms floating toward you from the trees that perched along your path. You held out your hand and let a few settle into your palm before smirking at the boy beside you. “Cherry blossoms, carrying my bag, talking all mushy. If you were anyone else I’d think this was some poor attempt at a love confession.”
Hinata stumbled over his steps before pausing all together and you furrowed your brow at him before realization struck you. His face had blossomed red in a furious blush and his eyes were set on you determinedly in a way that had your heart racing.
Your mouth went dry. “Hinata-”
“I’m not good with words.” He took a shuddering breath and his fists clenched. “Going to Brazil is my dream, but when I think about you not being there I kinda feel like I’m gonna throw up or something. And when I’m not thinking about volleyball I’m usually thinking about when I get to see you next so…” He glanced up at you more confidently and you started to panic. You’d wanted this for so long but… “I don’t know a lot of things, but I know that I love volleyball. So, it would only make sense that I also lo-”
“Stop.” You put your hand up between you both. “You can’t…”
“What are you talking about?” He tilted his head confused. “I’m pretty sure I can. I mean I’ve been debating it for at least a year now so-”
“A year?” Your eyes widen before you shake it off. “Nevermind, I meant not now. Not when you’re about to leave and I’m about to start university and…” You clench the material of your pleated skirt. “It wouldn’t be fair to either of us.”
He furrowed his brow at you and his eyes scanned your face. “How wouldn’t it be fair?”
You took a few shaky breaths to calm yourself and to hold back the unshed tears that burn in the back of your eyes. “I don’t want to be a burden to your training in-”
“You would never be a-”
“But it’d feel that way.”
His tongue stuck out the side of his mouth while he was deep in thought. You always found that a cute quirk, but now you were just desperate to know what possibly was going on in his head. He scratched the back of his head and glanced toward the sky once again, but like before you saw nothing of interest there.
“Okay,” he said, meeting your eyes once more. “Next time then.”
You blinked. “Next… time?”
He gave you a crooked grin. “Yep, it’s not like I’ll be gone forever.”
It seemed like such a silly thing to cry over such a naive promise, like he would actually still have feelings for you when or if he ever decided to come back to Japan. The realistic part of you knew it was a childish fantasy, but let him believe his bold words like you knew only Hinata could. However, the hopeful part of you, the one that leaked tears the moment Hinata’s smiling face was out of view, clung to the idea of his dramatic return and your tragic love story.
But days turned to months, and months turned to years, and you were no longer a child. You had come to terms that the world wasn't made for fairy tale endings.
~*~*~*~
Nearly four years had passed since that day and for the most part you had moved on from it. You take a deep breath before flashing your laminated badge to the security guard that would allow you to enter the massive gymnasium. No matter how many times you come to these venues it still gives you a thrill being around the chaotic environment. The crowd’s chants, scuffling of athletes shoes, coaches encouraging shouts and rushed commands all created a cacophony unmatched by anything you’d ever heard. It was a no brainer that you were addicted to the atmosphere, eventually building yourself a career that allowed you to become a part of it all.
You had plenty of time before the match started to conduct the interview you’d been assigned for that day. You glanced at the scoreboard and a nervous ball hit the pit of your stomach at seeing MSBY Black Jackals vs Schweiden Adlers. You attributed it to the number of people in the audience, rather than the person you’d been lucky enough to be assigned to interview.
Nope. This definitely had nothing to do with Hinata Shoyo.
As you unnecessarily prepared your notes, pen, and recorder for the fifteenth time since you’d arrived at the arena you glanced into the audience. Your eyes landed on Yamaguchi and Yachi waving wildly to you from the stands and you waved back, taking note of the empty seat Yachi was pointing to beside her. Looks like you’d be staying for the match after all.
You stretched your arms above your head and let out a sigh, adjusting your blazer before glancing over your shoulder to where MSBY had now filtered onto the sidelines. Your eyes were immediately drawn to the tufts of orange hair bouncing between the team and you hadn’t even noticed your soft smile until Bokuto was pointing in your direction. Hinata’s head whipped toward you and you felt yourself freeze. If you were back in high school you’d probably describe this moment of staring into his amber eyes as magical in some way, but you just felt embarrassed you couldn’t remain composed while on the job.
He sends you a crooked grin and with a light shove from Atsumu he’s jogging over in your direction. You take a deep breath to center yourself before he’s way too close in your personal bubble.
“Hey.” He smirked at you. It was a familiar look, but he carried it differently. He radiated a newfound confidence that he didn’t have last time you’d seen him. Had he also gotten taller?
“Hi.” You breathed out. Internally cursing yourself for allowing him to have such an effect on you after so many years.
“You, uh, look really nice” He said, amber eyes bright and genuine. They were still so open, like shameless windows to his every emotion. At least that hadn’t changed.
“You look pretty good too.” You said quickly switching your focus to your notes. “How’s being back?”
“Trying to give me a pre-interview?” He smirked, raising a teasing eyebrow. “Don’t think I agreed to that one.”
“Just trying to get a better feel for the client,” you shrugged. “Not required, I suppose.”
“Client?” He pouted.
“This is a paid interaction.”
“Well, let’s keep it PG cause I’m really only good at volleyball for now,” he smirked, raising his eyebrows suggestively. Your face dusted light pink at the suggestion. Yeah, he’d definitely matured over the last four years.
“Here’s the questions I’ll be asking,” you decided to ignore him, along with the cute pout he gave at being ignored, and get straight to business. “I’m going to be recording our conversation for my writing, so don’t worry about stumbling or speed or anything. Just relax and take your time.” Hinata’s eyes were soft when you looked back up to make sure he was paying attention. “What?”
“You’re just so cool.”
You chewed the inside of your cheek to calm your nerves. “It’s not that special. I’m just doing my job.”
“But you’re so good at it. You look badass.”
You shrugged. “I’m going to start the recording now,” you said and the moment he nodded in acknowledgement you pressed record. “Hinata Shoyo. MSBY player 21.” You said, marking the interview for yourself to which he just raised an eyebrow. “So, this is your first interview, right?”
“I had small ones in Brazil, but this is my first one as a professional player in Japan.” He smiled widely. “I made sure you were the first interview I had.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, I got a few offers, but they didn’t matter to me if it wasn’t you doing them.”
You blinked at the confession, and found yourself lagging as you looked for the next question. “Um-okay, well, this is your first professional game this season on the starting line-up. What made you choose MSBY?”
“They were the best team at the time having try-outs!” Hinata crossed his arms and nodded. “I have to beat Kageyama after all.”
“It had nothing to do with Bokuto?” You tilted your head. You honestly thought he picked based on friendship.
“Nope, but that was an awesome coincidence!” He leaned closer to you and you looked around awkwardly. “So, what made you choose to be a sports journalist for volleyball? Anyone important in your life?”
Your heart began beating rapidly in your chest and you pushed Hinata’s face back with your notepad. “I’m sorry. I thought I was conducting the interview.”
“Well, as the client I feel I would be most comfortable answering my questions in a back-and-forth style.” He smiled innocently and you deadpanned. “Also, this is my first time, remember? I’m still learning.”
You rolled your eyes before deciding to just humor him. “I knew a kid in high school. Pretty obsessed with volleyball, so I spent a lot of time around it.”
“He sounds pretty awesome.”
“Yeah, it really depends on the day.” You said, making Hinata pout and grumble under his breath. “So, you went to Brazil for your career. How was it different there?”
“Beach volleyball is so different. It's an entirely new game compared to here. Less hands, more feet. There’s the wind and then the sand. It was really hard getting used to.”
“Will you be using some of that technique tonight?” You asked.
“On the court or...?” He smirked slyly with mirth dancing in his eyes. You glared at him and he sighed. “I mean, yeah. You’re staying for the game, right?”
“Um--I...yeah.” You answered awkwardly, looking between Hinata and the notes. He raised an eyebrow at your weird response.
“Are you dating someone?” He asked bluntly.
“What?” Your ears shot to your shoulders at his question, but he just looked at you calmly. “I-What does that-Why?”
“Cause you’re acting weird.”
You furrowed your brow and glared at the courts flooring beneath you. ““How do you think Brazil has impacted your playstyle?”
“You’re avoiding my question,” he said as you continued to avoid the question. He let out a groan before continuing. “You’ll definitely see it through my receives and blocking. I think it’ll really surprise people in my first match back.” Hinata answered smoothly. “So, are you single or…?”
You raised a brow. “Does it matter?”
“Duh,” he scoffed, dragging a hand down his face.
You sighed dramatically. “No, I’m not dating someone currently.”
“Currently!?”
“Oh my god, we’re like 22. Yes, I dated someone for a while just...” You pinched the bridge of your nose. “I heard you were called Ninja Shoyo in Brazil. Do you know where that came from?”
“I don’t know, probably because I’m Japanese.” He waved it off and you furrowed your brow grumpily at his lazy response.
“Hinata you have to at least try to-”
“Do you still love me?”
You choke on your breath and nearly let the recorder slide out of your hands, but Hinata manages to grab it with quick reflexes. He holds it between you, tilting his head with an inquisitive stare.
“I don’t know what you-”
“Because I still love you.” He declared, refusing to break eye-contact as he finally confessed what he’d held on to for so long. “Have for over four years. I kept waiting for the right time, and I’m finally back now for good so… I feel like this is it.”
You stood there in disbelief and tightened your grip around your notebook in an attempt to ground yourself. This was not part of your plan. You had given up on this long ago. “There’s no way you still-”
“It never faded. There were a few times I wished it would,” he looked away almost shamefully. “Only when it hurt a lot, like, when I felt really alone. But even when I tried I just couldn’t. I’d read your articles and everything would come back, ya know?”
You nodded slowly. You remember how it felt when Yachi sent you the article about ‘Ninja Shoyo’. The way your heart had leapt just from seeing his picture. You had stayed up the entire night rereading the poorly translated article and telling yourself you just missed an old friend, nothing more.
You dumping your boyfriend a week later had absolutely nothing to do with it…
“It’s complicated.” You settled on. There were too many factors now.
“Then we can figure it out,” his wide smile nearly sent a thrum through your heart you’d been unknowingly yearning for. “No need to overthink. We have plenty of time.”
Your heart swelled at the words and their implications. “I guess… there is.”
“You said you’re staying for the game?” He asked, which you confirmed with a nod. “Awesome. We can eat and catch up or something.” His eyes widened as he waved his hands between you. “Doesn’t need to be a date. We can just hang out like old times.”
“But what if... I want to call it a date?” You asked nearly above a whisper, twisting the ball of your foot into the ground.
Hinata paused before breaking out into a crooked smile. “Then I’d be fucking thrilled, but no pressure. Okay?”
A whistle sounded and you both turned to see the MSBY’s coach waving to Hinata as the rest of his team took the court for warm-ups. You frowned at the sheet in your hands. “We barely made through the questions…”
“There’s tons of material on here,” Hinata winked as he pressed your recorder into your palm. “You can interrogate me with whatever after the game too.”
You smiled affectionately at him as another warning whistle came from his coach. He apologized to you quickly before running off toward the court. Your cheeks warmed when Bokuto ruffled Hinata’s hair and Atsumu gave a few suggestive looks in your direction while whispering in Hinata’s ear. But when he gave Atsumu a shove, his face a flaming red, you knew you hadn’t been kidding anyone.
The lights dimmed in the arena and you made your way to where Yachi had been seated in the stands. You kept glancing toward the sunshine boy who managed to light up your life the second he returned. Someone with that strong of a magnitude couldn’t help but attract everyone around him.
As he bounced around the court, laughing boastfully with Bokuto, the only thought in your head was that it should have been obvious. Of course you had never stopped loving him.
How could anyone stop loving someone like him.

Friends With Benefits
Season 2
Atsumu X Reader
Warning: Smut, fool’s in love, unrequited love, unplanned pregnancy, best friends, heartbreak, fluff, Atsumu is an oblivious bastard, Childhood friends
Season 1 Materialist
Next Chapter: The Start Of A New Case
“Mama! Hurry we have to go home it’s about to start!”
“Alright little guy”
I opened the car and took out the groceries bag and noticed my excited 4 year old at the door waiting impatiently for me too open the door.
“Mama! They’re gonna start!”
Walked to the porch and opened the door.
“I’ll make popcorn for us!” He grinned.
……
I frowned as my little boy stared in awe at the tv. “Mama he’s so cool” My heart broke as I saw him point at Atsumu. “He ran to my leg hugging it and stared at me with his chocolate brown eyes that resembled his dad. “Mama do ya think I can be like him?” (I pat his head) No.
He teared up while I put my forhead against him. “You’ll be someone better.” He giggled and hugged me. “I love you mama.”
I hugged him tightly “Mama loves you too.” I booped noses with him holding his hand. “Mama is going to work and she’s getting ready to solve a case!
Will you be a good boy at Mrs. Hinata’s? His eyes sparkled “Natsu is gonna teach me volleyball!” I nodded at the 4 year old “You really love volleyball.” He giggled “Yup ever since Shōyō showed me! He’s real cool!” I laughed.
“I wanna be a setter!” I looked at him and smiled. “A setter huh.” He nodded “I saw how cool Uncle Kawa did his serves! He’s so cool!” I nodded. “He is and I owe him a lot.” I mumbled and smiled at my son picking him up. “Don’t tell kawa this mama.”
He leaned into my ear to whisper “I think Miya Atsumu is a better setter” My heart broke putting him down. “You thinks so?” He nodded. “Well Uncle Kawa is still pretty cool!”
“Ok sweetie go get your things!” He nodded. “Kay mama!”
I looked at him touching my now flat stomach I walked to the cabinet taking out a photo album that said. “Me and And my bestfriend Tsumu!”
I flipped through the pictures and smiled at the last one where he wrapped his arms behind me resting his head my shoulder holding a big grin. “This is my favorite and last picture we took together.” I smiled lightly. “It was the last time we where truly happy before anything happened.”
…….
I put it away and looked at my son.
“It’s already been 5 years yet.”
It’s hard to believe what happened over the past years how we broke everything off and I ended up with Haruka. I became a mother sometimes I still can’t believe I’ve been one for 5 years already.
I touched my now flat stomach and stared at my son who noticed me rushed to me latching himself to my leg and giggled rubbing his tummy.
“Mama I wanna eat some cookies!” I pat his head. “Not until you eat lunch baby.” She smiled and hugged my leg. “I love you mama!” I giggled taking his hand taking one last look at the caninet which has the photo album in.
“Mama! He’s so cool I wanna be a setter like him!” My sons eyes sparkled. “You will be I know you can you say it so much I know you will.” He pouts “What’s wrong?” He looks at me “Mama I wanna meet him and tell him he’s so cool!” I froze “Mama?”
“No! You can’t!” He looked at me with a frown tearing up “Mama are you mad at me?” I bent down hugging him tightly. “Baby I’m not mad I’m sorry I yelled.” He looked at me “Is it bad that I meet him?”
I shook my head. “It’s just you think he’s so cool mommy is scared of you leave with him.”
He shook his head. “No! I will stay with mama no matter what! He is cool but mama is the best!” I looked at him smiling.
“Thank you baby.” I said goodbye to him while the door opened and he walked inside. “I’m sorry son.” I walked back “He doesn’t want anything to do with us.” I got into the car heading to my job. “Mama is sorry.”
Welcome to my life. My name is (Y/N) (L/N) I am a 22 year old single mom with a child just as crazy as his father a professional volleyball player.
It’s honestly hilarious and heartbreaking how son idolizes him without even know that his dad.
“How cliché can this get.”
….
I entered the office and met my boss.
(Y/N)! I have a job for you!
That is?
“There has been an investigation on a series murders that happened 4 days ago.”
Series?
He nodded taking out some files. “Exactly 9 murders happened. “Nine!”
“That’s not the worst part they have all been pregnant women.” My eyes widened.
“They’ve only been killing pregnant women?”
He nodded.
“How disgusting.”
“Yes I need you to go and find out what has been going on in that city.”
“I will sir.” I grabbed the files and studied them.
“They kill the mother by preforming a C-Section.” I shook my head. “No it’s more a just cutting her open with a knife.” I flipped the files one by one. “There have even been cases of missing children.”
My heart stopped and I noticed all the kids are around my babies age.” I read and frowned. “The city of Hyogo my home town.”
…….
“I’ll be on that case however.”
He looked at me.
“What is it.”
“I can’t drive back and forth it’s about 11 hours away.” He nodded.
“I know so I’ve decided to book a safe hotel for you to do your investigation in.” I nodded.
“Would it be alright if I bring my son he won’t be in any danger right?”
“You’ll be protected and it’s high up nearly impossible to be broken into.” I sighed.
“Don’t worry they’ll be other investigators with their kids.” I nodded. “My partner has a child and she’s going with her husband.” (She was the one who suggested I should bring him with me)
“We’ll have it safe so your child will be well taken care off.” I nodded.
“Alright.” (This is a big opportunity for me.)
“Besides the place you will be staying is in Osaka.”
My eyes widened. “O-Osaka?” He nodded.
“You’ll be in Hyogo most of the time and your child will be in Osaka perfectly fine.”
……..
I walked into my car.
“Just like when I went to Peru.”
“He was only two back then so I’m sure he’ll be fine.”
“Besides..” I took my phone out and dialed a number.
…….
“Hey it’s me.”
“Yeah, I know it’s been a while but I have some thing to ask you would you be able to help me out?”
“Yeah I’m headed over there actually me and Haruka are so I’m sure you’d like to see him right?”
I smiled. “Sure, I’ll make that happen.” I grinned.
“Yeah I’m actually headed over there in two days I just need to pack our stuff.”
“How long am I staying? Well the least would be about 4-5 months the latest would be about A year maybe less it depends on how this person who’s committing crimes acts during the time I’m over there.”
“Of course I’ll see you in a few days.”
…..
As soon as I had Haruka I never wanted anything more than to protect him and stay safe. I decided that instead of being a journalist I’d help people from hurting and somehow I became a homicide detective the world is strange indeed.

Beach Volleyball (Atsumu’s Daughter)
@guardiansofasgard Hi! Can i request a Haikyuu one shot where the reader is Atsumu’s 10 year old daughter 😊
Of course! This is actually my third time writing it because it got deleted more then once -.- Hope you enjoy it! If anyone has a one shot they want me to write I’m going to be writing all night! ~ Kai
Atsumu walked onto the hot sand, watching his teammates throw balls in the hot summer sun. There were very few occasions the MSBY Black Jackals so they took advantage of it whenever they could. They decided to take a relaxing day at the beach and play a few games.
You were thrilled that your dad finally decided to let you join him in his work, he was always too busy to spend time with you. You were sitting under an umbrella next to Sakusa. “So, your one of my dad’s friends?” You said cautiously. Why was he wearing a face mask to the beach?
“Yeah, you look exactly like Atusmu its almost chilling.”
“Thank you?”
About 5 minutes later you get engulfed into a big hug from behind. It was Natsu, Hinata’s little sister. “What’s up Y/N!! ITS BEEN FOREVER! I haven’t seen you in like- 4 years!”
“Oh my god hii!! You got so big!” You smiled, Natsu had to be at least high school age by now.
Hinata was not far behind her, all the boys started to set up the nets for a game while you and Natsu started to catch up.
“All right, let’s start to form the teams-” Atusmu said.
“Do I get to play this time Dad!”
Atsumu sighed, “You know we are professionals right? I don’t think you would be able to keep up with us.”
“Says the one who couldn’t even serve ‘till year 2 of high school…”
“Hey! Watch your mouth Y/N” You could tell he was about to smile. You definitely got his attitude.
“Atsumu! Stop bickering with your daughter and come play!” Hinata yelled. “And just let Y/N play when is she ever going to learn how to play if you dont let her!”
“FINE!” He pouted. “Sorry Y/N, I didn’t mean to yell at you, you’ll be on my team alright?”
You nodded and followed him over to the court. There were four people on each team, on team 1 there was Atsumu, Bokuto, Y/N and Sakusa. On team 2, there was Hinata, Natsu, Inunaki, and Meian.
Natsu was the first to serve, she threw the ball in the air and jumped into a beautiful jump serve. The ball hit hard against the sand on the other side. Hinata smiled, “THATS MY SISTER! I KNEW YOU WOULD BE GREAT SOMEDAY!”
Natsu was able to rack up 4 more points before Bokuto was able to hit the ball back over. As the game progressed, you started to get even more nervous. They really are professionals, how am I ever going to be able to play with them? Are they going to be mad if I mess up?
Of course in the midst of your panic, you were up to serve. The ball shook i your hands, you starred at it then back at your father. “I-I only know how to serve underhand…I think you should just skip me.”
“That’s alright! As long as it makes it over the net.” Atsumu smiled.
Ok…No pressure at all. You thought, just have to get it over the net and you’ll be fine.
You held your hand out with the ball you hit it as hard as you could with your other hand. Everything seemed to move into slow motion as the ball shot up into the air and slowly curved to hit Kiyoomi in the back of the head. You stood there frozen as he turned towards you, glaring.
His whole body shook as he walked past you back to his backpack, grabbing a can of Lysol and spraying his head.
“Sakusa- I’m sorry.” You tried. His stare was almost deafening.
“Kiyoomi, don’t.” Atsumu stared right back at him.
“Its fine. I’m the worst possible person you could’ve hit but its fine.”
“I’m really sorry.” You started to walk back towards the car.
“Y/N! Wait!” Atsumu called.
Atsumu and Hinata came running towards you. You really did it this time Y/N. Why did you have to be so stupid. Of course you had to hit the germaphobe. Dad even warned me about him. Dad’s never going to talk to me again.
Atsumu grabbed your arm, turning you around to face him. “Hey, it’s ok, no ones mad.”
Your eyes started to pool with tears, “Aren’t you mad? I messed up.”
Atsumu frowned, “Why would I be mad?” He bent down to your level. “Volleyball is a sport about learning, you cant be amazing from the beginning. Hell, like you said earlier, I couldn’t even serve until my 2nd year of high school. I promise Sakusa is not mad at you.”
“Yeah!” Hinata said. “On my first big game of high school I hit kagayama in the back of the head with a ball.”
“Kagayama? How are you not dead?”
“See? If he’s mad at you I will kick his ass for you.” Atsumu smiled.
“Thanks Dad.” You hugged him.
He held you close. “Anytime sweetheart.”
Everyone returned back to the game with no hard feelings. The games was 1-1 and the last set was end game. Y/N’s team was at match point. One more point and we win.
“Go Y/N! Its your turn to serve!”
You shakily took the ball into your hand and threw it up into the air. Maybe an overhand serve would work. Your hand hit the ball with impossible force and flew over the net. Natsu got it back up in the air and Shoyo spiked it. You got in front of the ball and saved it with your face and fell to the ground. The ball made it back over to the other side, winning the game.
“Oh my god Y/N are you ok?” Sakusa asked. He ran over and reluctantly laid a hand on your shoulder.
You held your nose as it dripped blood and smiled. “WE WON!!- ow..”
Atsumu laughed and took off his shirt and gave it to you. “Good job sweet heart.” He helped you up.
“Now you can say you’re a real volleyball player!” Bokuto smiled.
“Yeah! See Dad! I told you I could do it!”
“You did. I’m proud of you!”
“ICE CREAM ON ME EVERYONE!” You yelled.
“Where’d you get the money?” Atsumu asked.
“...ICE CREAM ON MY DAD!”
“HEY!”
Sorry if this was rushed! Like I said, this is my third rewrite of this because my computer crashed the first time... I hope you still like it though. If anyone has any other story ideas I will gladly write them.

Haikyuu!! fic recs
hello party people! I have decided to make a fic rec list for you lovelies bc everyone likes fic recs!!! and also for me so I can finally close some tabs on my phone
most of these are kagehina fic recs, but I have a couple others that I will link below too!
format: title by author (hyperlinked) | rating | word count | status | summary, my thoughts (my summaries are garbage, i’m sorry in advance)
this is already a list of my favorite fics, but ❤️ denotes super-favorite
happy reading!!!
hinata/kageyama
i can do better by buu | M | 45.5k | complete | hinata and kageyama have a contest to see who can make the other cum more. it’s dirty and adorable and very in-character and is a staple in kagehina fic. you’ve probably already read this, but if you haven’t READ IT NOW.
❤️ Speed Demons by Esselle | E | 17.4k | complete | kghn racecar drivers! so sexy and dangerous. if you have low AU tolerance, you may not enjoy it, but i could not put this down the first time i read it. there’s gonna be a lot of Esselle in this list, probably.
❤️ Hum by Esselle | M | 12.5k | complete | hinata overhears kageyama singing and he’s surprisingly good at it. this melted my heart in so many ways, it’s so lovely. the author does SUCH a good job describing his voice, i felt like i could hear it.

touch the ground again by Esselle | E | 26.4k | complete | kghn are professional volleyball players, and kageyama goes back to hinata to fix a mistake he made four years earlier. SO well-done and it made me so emotional, i love this one so much.

SUCH an interesting fic, i loved reading it. hinata’s characterization was so good and kags is so infuriating, it’s fantastic. there is also a sequel written here by someonestolemyshoes where they explore how kghn’s first time would go.
❤️ Deadly by majesticartax | E | 42.2k | WIP | hinata works graveyard at a laundromat where he meets kageyama, who is... not quite right. i have read this so many goddamn times. it is so well-written, so hilarious, and so hot. fucking fabulous. there’s prob gonna be a lot of majesticartax in this list too.

HAIKYUU - The Dark Spots on the Sun pt4
It was weird.... To say the least. Sitting alone at home, with a pizza in front of him, still hot from the oven. Just for him. His mom was working.... Natsu at Koureki’s place...
Only him. Utter silence.
It felt nice.
It felt right.
So why was he crying?
He didn’t know what happened... one minute he was sitting down ready to eat the best meal he’d have in days... the next, his mind was as blank as a page. He felt drained. More so than any practice. Physically he was okay... physically he could demolish a tank with how much energy and power he had left inside him, however, emotionally, he just felt... drained.
Shoyo was running on fumes. Shoyo brought his knees into his chest and sat there in the lounge, with the lights off. He let the darkness envelope him and he felt small. Lately, he felt like he was on a tightrope and at any point he could topple over and fall. He had a whole team of people looking out for him yet in that moment he felt like he was alone.
He closed his eyes and tried to think of the day where it all began.
Dad.
He remembered the phone call that he had made, and how his dad had picked up straight away.
He should have just left it. He should have just ignored me and spoken to me at home. He should have been concentrating.
Or maybe I just shouldn’t have been born.
Shoyo repeated this idea over and over again in his brain. His life was a tragic story: the main character turned side character, which eventually led to his demise. He looked at his arms and the fresh bruises that had appeared the last time Amaya beat him. Now they were fading and looking less noticeable. He’d still have to wear his usual long sleeved tracksuit when they practiced with Nekoma, Fukurodani, Sendai and the other volleyball teams that would join Karasuno at the week long training camp in Tokyo...
Shoyo lifted his head and looked up at the wall in front of him behind the TV set. There, hanging in a frame on the wall, was a picture of Natsu and Shoyo. It was in the summer, two years before Karasuno, when Natsu was four. Shoyo smiled as he thought back to the memory. Shoyo had gotten a new volleyball for his birthday, and as a reward for passing a test in middle school he had gotten himself a new pair of volleyball shoes. Natsu had unintentionally picked them out when they were shopping for birthday gifts for Izumi, Shoyo’s middle school best friend on the basketball team. So, Shoyo had set the camera up, and taken a photo with Natsu on his shoulders, as she held up the first gift she had ever picked out for her brother above her head, her smile reaching from ear to ear.
His goal was to be the next tiny giant... but that wasn’t just it.
If he became a professional volleyball player, he could look after Natsu on his own. They’d finally be away from Amaya. And perhaps at the same time, practice with Natsu if she ever did decide to go into volleyball. He’d fight to stay on the court, to be the next tiny giant, and most importantly...
To protect Natsu.
-
“I can’t believe it.”
“It’s just not possible”
“He must be cheating.”
“There’s just no way.”
As Takeda was loading the volleyball gear onto the bus, the team could only stare at what they thought was a mirage...
Hinata Shoyo
Had passed every subject
Where his lowest score
Was a 75/100.
There was just no way.
Kageyama growled at the ginger haired middle blocker as Nishinoya high fived him ecstatically. He too had passed; his lowest score being 63. Shoyo had beaten him.
“KAGEYAMA. STOP IT.” Daichi yelled as he climbed on to the bus. He however could stay mad for long... everyone had passed. The usual dumb delinquents had grown to be at the very least, normal intellectual human beings. Everyone was going to Tokyo. He released a sigh of relief as he sat down and the bus started moving.
“Isn’t our team exhausting?” Suga joked with a wink. Daichi laughed lightly.
“Can’t argue with that. Just looking at them makes me want to sleep.”
“Well if we’re going to be up against powerhouse schools like fukurodani... we need to take a leaf out of Hinata and Kageyama’s book.” Ennoshita added. Narita nodded.
“Hm-hm. When we play against them, we gotta be at our best. Both in skill and in energy.”
“Well... we definitely have the energy that’s for sure... and as for skill, I have no doubt that our first and second years can leave any competitor in the dust.” Daichi agreed as he watched his teammates get excited for the upcoming games. Even Tsukishima seemed slightly less monotonous than usual.
“We’ll be arriving at around 8am so make sure you catch up on any sleep back there!” Ukai called. “Once we get off the bus, it’s an hour to settle in and then we’re hitting the practice matches!” He got a loud YES SIR from the team. Eventually, the loud racket of a raging team dyed down, hinting that everyone was asleep. Even Kiyoko and Yachi were out like a light.
“We did it. We’re really going to Tokyo.” Takeda said excitedly as he drove down the dark country lanes, towards the highway.
“We’ve been before haven’‘t we?” Ukai noted jokingly. Takeda nodded with a cheshire-like grin on his face.
“Yeah but this feels different. I mean, before Karasuno would be lucky to even get a practice match from one school.... and probably one from a minor region who doesn’t make it past the second round at the pre-lims. Now... we’re training with National teams. I can’t help but get excited.” Ukai laughed at Takeda’s enthusiasm.
“No I get it. I expect big things from this team. We’re going to go to pre-lims, win pre-lims, go to nationals, win nationals, and be the best team there is. I know some may think that’s over confidence but, I have faith in this team.”
Shoyo slowly opened his eyes as the sun seeped through the bus windows and onto his face. Looking around, he could tell everyone was still asleep. At the front of the bus, Ukai was driving, whilst Takeda was getting in some much needed rest as well. It must be hard to drive all night, Shoyo thought as he watched the familiar houses that he would often see as they pulled into Sendai high school. They were finally here and going to start practicing. He looked at his phone, and saw that it was indeed coming close to 8am, which means that Natsu would probably have woken up by now. She never slept in anyway; always up early. Sometimes, if she had slept during the day before hand, she would wake up early enough to see Shoyo leave for practice in the morning. He wondered if perhaps he should give Setsuko a call... ask her how Natsu is and if she missed him at all... He shook his head and put his phone back in his pocket. He’d call later. Now was not the-
“I thought you would be awake.” He looked up to see a smiling Kiyoko. She was standing in the alleyway of the bus, clearly on the mission to wake everyone up and give them energy bars and juice packs to kickstart their morning. Shoyo smiled and nodded.
“Yeah, I seem to know precisely when it’s morning. It’s my hidden talent.” Shoyo jokily responded causing Kiyoko to giggle a bit.
“Well, we should be pulling up into the school soon. If you could possibly wake Kageyama...” She said whilst flicking her eyes to the raven haired setter, who was still sleeping like the grave. Shoyo nudged the setter and when he didn’t wake, Shoyo stood up. This meant that Kageyama, who had his head resting on his shoulder, fell into the now empty seat, waking up with a start.
“Wha-? what happened? are we there?” Kiyoko handed a juice pack to him as Shoyo sat back down, before moving on to the rest of the team. Shoyo pocketed the energy bar. Thanks to the quite and lonely night he had before they left, Shoyo had taken the opportunity to overeat. It felt nice to stuff his face with leftover pork buns and rice. He untwisted the cap from the juice pack and began to drink the contents, feeling energised and refreshed as he did so. He was also feeling a little warm thanks to the long-sleeved training gear he had on, but it wasn’t like he had a choice. The bruising and scars from Amaya’s beatings hadn’t gone down. If anything, they had started to fade into a dark shade of purple with yellow on the sides. This probably because he hadn’t taken it easy in practice... so the extra jumping around and moving was just aggravating it more. The good thing was that it was a little less difficult to breath now.
“Hey Hinata?” Kageyama’s usual deep voice snapped him out of his thoughts as he answered with a simple little hm? in response. “Are you going to be wearing that all day? aren’t you going to overheat?”
“I’ll be fine. I guess it means we’ll just have to win quickly to avoid the amount of forfeits we have to do.” Kageyama smiled at Shoyo’s eagerness.
“I wanted to talk to you about your sister by the way.” Shoyo’s ears popped up in attention. Anything concerning Natsu was important.
“What about her?”
“Well...” Kageyama remembered that he wasn’t supposed to confront Shoyo just yet. If Shoyo was going to come forward, he would. But Kageyama didn’t agree with that reasoning. To him, the middle blocker was stubborn and fiercely independent. He wasn’t sure if he would come forward at all. “Does she want to be a volleyball player? If she does, I can help teach her how to set...” Shoyo blinked once. Twice. Three times.
“Are you okay?” Shoyo asked with a look of confusion on his face.
“Yes I’m okay! Is it weird for me to want to help teach volleyball to a kid!?”
Yes. Very.”
“What!? Well forget it then! I won’t!” Kageyama growled and folded his arms in a huff. Shoyo took a deep breath.
“I don’t know what she wants to do. But.... if she does, you’re the best setter I know.... So I think she’d love to learn from you.” Kageyama relaxed a bit in surprise. He was not expecting that.
“Hey Hina-”
“We’re here!” The sound of Nishinoya’s voice interrupted Kageyama’s train of thought and the freak-pair turned to open the curtains and look at the school that was slowly becoming clearer and clearer as they drew near it. Outside, standing by the gates... Was Nekoma.
They clearly had gotten here before them, so it was nice to see a rival team like them greet Karasuno when they arrived. Shoyo looked in the crowd for a certain blonde setter with dark roots and sure enough, standing next to the Nekoma team captain, was Kenma. Shoyo gulped. Last night, he had given a thought to this whole training camp. Unlike Nekoma, Karasuno were a bunch of idiots. They were easy to trick and it wasn’t hard to conceal how tired and haggard shoyo had gotten these past few days.
Kenma however was a genius. He was extremely observant. It would not be easy trying to pretend like everything was okay. Shoyo gulped and threw the now empty juice pack into the plastic bag that Kiyoko was treating as a bin, before slowly following the rest of the team out of the bus.
“HELLOOOOO CITY BOYYYYYSS!” Tanaka yelled at the top of his lungs.
“COUNTRY FELLAAAAASSSS!!!!” Yamamoto shouted back, high fiving him in the process. Daichi rolled his eyes, smacking tanaka around the back of the head. Kuroo, captain of the Nekoma team did the same thing, earning a small giggle from Noya.
“So... You crazy crows came after all.... We were wondering whether you got lost trying to find the sky tower again.” Kuroo teased.
“Yeah well... you know how we are... constantly flying wherever the wind takes us.” Daichi replied. The black hair captain sniggered a little.
“You know that almost sounded kind of cool.... if it wasn’t so cheesy”
“Why thankyou... we do try our best”.
The two teams walked up the steps to the school, both really excited to start training. Kenma, however stayed behind a little, waiting for Shoyo who was the last one off the bus. Kenma smiled a little, happy to see his small volleyball friend. Shoyo smiled back, before wiping his brow a little. It was hot in miyagi, but in Tokyo, it was even hotter. It didn’t help that he was practically wearing a baselayer to hide his injuries. Kenma wrinkled his eyebrows a little.
“Hey kenma.” Shoyo nodded a little and slung his bag further over his shoulder. “Whatcha’ playin’?” Shoyo asked as he leaned over to watch the small gameboy that Kenma had in his hands.
He shurgged. “My dad gave me this old gameboy to try. Apparently it was his when he was a kid. To be honest, the sound quality’s terrible and the games lag really badly but... It’s still pretty fun to play. You wanna have a go?” Shoyo shook his head.
“Nah it’s okay. I’ll just wanna watch. Hey Daichi-san? Who are we playing first?”
“uh.... Ubagawa high. They’re from Kanagawa Prefecture.” Ukai said as they walked into Shinzen high school. He pulled out a piece of paper from his jacket pocket. “Okay listen up! There are four schools that we will be playing matches against. Fukurodani, Nekomata, Shinzen and Ubagawa. I’ve already told you a bit about each of them back at the gym.... but just to remind you, Each day you’ll be playing each team at least twice. Losses will be penalised by doing a forefeight or challenge. Today it will be flying laps.” Ukai pointed down the hallway to a red door with a piece of paper taped to it. “You can put your stuff down there. The managers are all grouped together in the room down the hall. I expect you all to be in the gym in fifteen minutes! got it?” A loud YES SIR erupted from the team as they headed for their changing room.
The room itself was small and bare, except for the thirty or so futons laying on the ground. There, both Karasuno and Nekoma would spend the next week relaxing after a hard days work. It was slightly cold, but if they plugged in the heater that occupied the furthest corner of the room, it would be okay.
“I bag the bed near the window!” Noya cried as he ran to the furthest futon in the room. Slowly, the boys from both teams started piling into the room to set down their stuff, eager to change and begin the long practice that awaited them. Shoyo walked to the futon opposite Kageyama in the middle of the room. Kageyama didn’t pay any attention to him at first, until he realised that Shoyo wasn’t changing.
“Are you seriously gonna keep that top on? it’s like 80 degrees in that gym, you’re gonna be baking.” Shoyo shrugged. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to train in a short-sleeved top.... Amaya had been piling into him hard lately, and because of that, the bruising he had gotten hadn’t gone down. It was taking longer than usual. Just moving hurt. He didn’t think anything was broken... it just hurt a lot.
“I forgot my short-sleeved tops at home so...” Kageyama sighed and reached into his bag. Shoyo felt the small smack of a t-shirt against his arm. He widened his eyes when he saw kageyama’s favourite white sport top land on his futon. He sighed and picked it up, then smiled. “Thanks Kageyama.... but I’m good.”
He passed the white shirt to the setter. “Don’t be an idiot Hinata. If you practice in that top, you’ll overheat.” He said, pushing Shoyo’s hand away. But before he could walk away, Shoyo threw the top towards him.
“I said I’m fine.”
“Hinata!”
Shoyo walked out of the room, avoiding the occasional stares that he got from some of the Nekoma players. As he did, he made sure to pocket his phone. Once he rounded the corner, just outside the gym, he flipped it open and went to his voicemail. It had probably gone off whilst he was sleeping in the bus. Without checking who had called, he pressed the phone to his ear.
You have two new messages.
First Message:
Hey Sho! It’s Natsu! Setsuko let me call you because I was so excited! We’re going to a theme park! I can’t wait to go on rides and eat cotton candy! Me and Koureki played dress up. She’s going as a princess and I’m going as you! I borrowed one of your gym tops so I hope you don’t mind! Oh! Setsuko says we’ve got to go so i’ll ask if I can call you again! Bye sho!!!
Shoyo smiled. He was glad that she was having such a good time. She needed it. It always hurt him more when she couldn’t go to parties, or play at the park with her friends, because he had practice and couldn’t go with her. He hated how every night, she had to hide in her room from her own mother. He hated how selfish he was being. Some days, he genuinely thought that he should quit and dedicate the rest of his time to looking after her. He shook his head. No, she wouldn’t forgive him. She may not understand yet but once she did, she would hate him for it. Later, to her, it would feel like pity. And he of all people knew what pity was like. It felt bitter and uncomfortable, just like a stomach bug that would never go away. He pressed the number 2 on his key pad. Message Saved. He always did this. He had a collection of saved messages from Natsu. Three others however were from his Dad. He was tempted to listen to a few now. Sure, he’d risk being late but what was a couple of minutes? He shook the thought out of his head and hurriedly awaited the next message.
Next Message
Shoyo felt his blood run cold.
Oi. I hope you had a good reason for ignoring my call you little shit. I don’t have time to leave messages if you don’t have the decency to fucking pick up. You better have the house spotless when I come home. If I even see one speck of dirt you’ll regret it. Anyway... I’m calling to say congrats on not failing your exams. Seriously, I didn’t think you could do it. But you seem to have picked yourself up a bit. I still think you should quit your stupid club. Go to college and get a real job. Scholarship of course. I aint’ payin for you to screw up. I’ll talk to you again later. You better pick up or else.
Shoyo felt his heart thump inside of his chest. Every time Amaya called his phone, he always thought he was in some sort of trouble. Whether that be because he screwed up at school or he forgot to do a chore. The fact that he had missed her call sent shivers down his spine. Thank god for my good grades. Amaya seemed to be in a good mood, which meant her meeting was going well. Hopefully, if her business trip was good, Amaya could stay in a good mood the whole week. Perhaps that would help ease the bruising a bit. He deleted the message and put his phone back into his pocket. He placed his hand over his heart to try and calm it down a little.
He breathed in
and out.
In
and out.
In
and out
In
and out.
He pushed himself off the wall, and forced himself to walk into the bright gym. He breathed in the soft smell of rubber and floor polish, smiling as he did so. For some reason, this familiar scent made him feel so much calmer. He smiled as he jogged towards his team who had just begun to start warming up in preparation for their match against Ubagawa. Shoyo smiled in excitement. Ubagawa was a strong team. They were one of the four team in the Fukurodani Academy group. As far as ranking was concerned, they were pretty good. Shoyo watched as their Captain Masaki Gora lept into the ar to spike. The ball smacked against his hand and slammed onto the ground, a large bang following as it did. Shoyo’s eyes widened excitedly. Masaki looked so angry and intimidating, but to Shoyo, all he could see was pure talent and brute strength. It was amazing.
“Oi. Kageyama... I can’t believe we get to play against a team as good as this”. He said whilst pulling the yellow bib over his head. Kageyama nodded in agreement.
“Yeah I know.”
“But with your sets, I’m sure we can beat him!” Shoyo said lightly smacking his arm.
“Yeah, I know”. Kageyama grinned, smacking his arm back harder. Shoyo winced slightly and kageyama wdened his eyes a little in shock. It was only for a split second that Shoyo had winced but Kageyama couldn’t exactly miss it. He thought back to the conversation that he’d overheard.
.
.
.
.
.
“Shoyo… you shouldn’t be just managing… it’s bad enough that she’s verbally agressive but physically? She shouldn’t be hitting her children.”
That night, Kageyama couldn’t sleep. He Just couldn’t. The conversation wasn’t loud. If anything, it was fairly quiet. But the wind picked up and made sound travel. It was to no surprise that Daichi, Suga and himself would hear it. He kicked his shoes off before entering the small home that him and his parents had occupied.
“I’m home!” He called. A tall woman with straight black hair came tumbling out of the kitchen in order to greet her son with a smile. She hugged him as her husband gave a small wave from the sofa.
“Tobio! How was practice?” She asked, taking his bag and placing it down by the door where it usually resided. Kageyama shrugged nonchantly and tilted his head a little to the side.
“It was good... I mean we had a few practice matches to prepare for Tokyo... Coach thinks we have a pretty good chance of winning the spring prelims.”
His father stood up and walked over to Kageyama, folding his newspaper as he did so. “That’s great news. You know your mother and I are so proud. But more importantly, how’s your studies coming along?” Kageyama visibly grimaced causing his father to laugh a little. “Hahaha.... don’t worry tobio.... I was never good at studying too. I always snuck off to go to the movies the first chance I got. Perhaps we can set you up with a tutor? Your mom is pretty good at math....” Kageyama nodded and sat down at the dinner table, where his mom had started serving. Something kept bugging him though. Something that stirred his mind somewhere else other than Volleyball. He was so focused that he realised he hadn’t exactly started eating yet.
“You okay son? What are you thinking about?”
“Sssshhh! Leave him be... He’s probably got his head up in the clouds about volleyball... You know how he is” His mother said lightly. Kageyama blinked a little and picked up his spoon to eat.
“Mom.... Dad.... I was wondering..... There’s this kid at my school..... Hinata. Shoyo Hinata.... He lives on the other side of the mountain but..... do you know his mom?”
The father stopped eating and put his spoon down. He hummed a little and closed his eyes, clearly trying to think of the name Hinata.
“It rings a bell.... yes.... I think I do..... Chikao Hinata.... Worked in the Marketing department at Benjiro Electronics a while back.... My company partnered up with Benjiro for a project of some sort. Quite a nice chap really. Became a friend quite quickly. It’s a shame what happened....
Kageyama frowned. “What do you mean by that?”
“Well....” His mom began as she took a sip of water from her cup. “Several years back, there was an accident and.... Well he passed away. I think he only had a son at the time but his wife, Amaya.... was it? Well, she was expecting.” Kageyama froze.

“Never really liked that woman.” Kageyama’s father said as he began eating again. “She wasn’t evil but she wasn’t the warmest of people....”
“Hakaku Kageyama!” The mother said sternly. “You can’t say such things!”

“I didn’t speak to the mother really so I don’t know what she’s like.... But I think she works at Ginjiro inc. A company that specialises in jewellry... I’m not too sure. Maybe we should invite them over for dinner sometime?” The mother wondered aloud. Kageyama nodded and continued eating.
Hinata....
