Hello everyone, welcome to my first publication. Here I will only mention the strong women of Tokyo Ghoul. If you want a deeper explanation of why they are strong. I will make another post.

Some more TG headcanons: This time, it's "worst human food smell?"

Touka and Ayato both answer "potato soup". An answer that most definitely has nothing to do with Arata making them eat their neighbor's cooking when they were kids, no way. (Yeah it is because of that, Ayato especially - eating Yoriko's cooking kinda blunted that particular trauma for Touka, almost like exposure therapy, although it also made that trauma worse in other, self-destructive ways when it comes to pretending to be human)

Hinami answers "banana", although popcorn is a close second.

Miza finds the smell of eggplant absolutely vile and disgusting. But the worst taste was one time she was pretending to be human while tailing a Dove and eavesdropping on his phone conversation, and had to choke down a strawberry milkshake to keep up appearances.

Naki hates the smell of curry, especially hot curry. Which ends up being hilarious, because once making synthetic meat taste like human food gets figured out, Naki likes spicy food.

Nishiki particularly hates the smell of milk, cream and stuff. Other ghouls poke fun at him over it a little, because he works in a coffee shop and has to handle milk and cream a lot.

Irimi finds that root beer smells like drain cleaner to her.

i don't do long analyses anymore, but it's interesting to see how kaneki refers to women who (regularly) abused him vs the man who abused him

"my mother" "my aunt"

"investigator arima"

he always alludes to the women, referring to them by their relationship to him exclusively, never mentioning their name. his mother makes sense, of course, but his aunt goes unnamed. "my aunt" not, say, "aunt reiko". he names his cousin, who is male, but not her. maybe there's a culture barrier there that i'm not crossing, but it's something i noticed.

to arima's advantage, kaneki calling him "father" is a bit weird and it's always passed off as a bit of a joke (even though it has its merits). but still, arima's name is only ever given respect by kaneki, even after his death and the reveal of his abuse.

perhaps it's because arima is his first father. kaneki doesnt have a frame of reference for one, and so arima is filling in that void. on the other hand, he has two sources of "mothers" from which to draw from and thus be wary of. it's why haise was attached to akira, and why kaneki, in his latter stages, avoids older women and trusts in men instead (see how he treats eto vs arima). it's why his relationships with touka and hinami are much more prominent than with others like kaya or miza.

5 for the ask game?

Warning for uncomfortable teeth discussion and teeth drawings.

After all these years... I've finally finished it. WE'RE TALKING ABOUT GHOUL TEETH! The amount of time I've spent on this really makes it feel weird but the longer I dwell on that the more it actually is, so without further ado.

(The numbering system was mostly for my own convenience when trying not to lose these pictures that all look the same at first glance, but I kind of adapted to it as I was writing this.)

A1 is a pair of human teeth drawn by yours truly. The cuspids will typically be a bit duller, but otherwise these are pretty average, if poorly drawn. These will be your point of reference because pointy teeth can look normal when not compared to how genuinely flat our teeth are.

Now we have B1, this is the mostly widely recognized kind of ghoul teeth, used in scary propaganda and horror films, very vampire-esq. Sharper cuspids, slightly slimmer teeth, but difficult to distinguish if you're just walking past, or even taking a good look without a point of reference.

Some ghouls with noticeable B1's include the Kirishimas, Itori, Nishiki, Donato, Yumitsu, and Tatara. But! Here's the thing, there's actually two kinds of common ghoul teeth and this one's actually found with less frequency than the other kind,

B2, almost all the teeth are more pointed than the human counterpart, but typically a bit more dulled than this example.

Some ghouls with noticeable B2's are Naki, Kanae, Irimi, Koma, Hinami, Roma, Miza and Shikorae.

Now we've dealt with the fun art stuff, time to get into the technical nonsense that I frankly know too little about dental functions to speak on but you cannot stop me with anything short of death itself. Proceeding! (There will be more fun art stuff further down)

The public is vaguely aware that there are actually two kinds of teeth distinctions that ghouls can have but it's more of an obscure trivia bit than common knowledge unless you work for the CCG, "You can tell an octopi's gender by whether or not it has suckers on the third arm to the right." type of factoid. Shirazu was actually pulled aside by investigators quite a few times times before even undergoing the Quinx procedure, just because his teeth give the impression of an unfortunately noticeable B2 ghoul. They had a record of him in the office for those working in the area he used to live in, that pretty much boiled down to "He's not a ghoul, please do not attack or interrogate if encountered in the wild, he's just Some Guy."

He's built like that for the same reason he was a good candidate for the Quinx procedure.

When it comes to concealment, It's pretty common practice for ghouls to have something extremely hard to chew on in order to seem to have completely average teeth, but if that's not their thing the bolder ghoul can just go the Uta route of "It's a body modification"

But in general dentists aren't a great idea unless you're a fortunate ghoul with naturally passing teeth, and even then only in necessity. Which is why it's remarked in confusion that Hajime Hazuki's teeth are "so straight," if he were a ghoul by birth that shouldn't really be the case.

Even now they obviously posses much stronger bite forces and teeth than any human, but this is actually quite a step down from ghouls of old. When integrating themselves into human society wasn't strictly necessary outside of simplifying hunts, the best comparison I can think of is monkeys. You'll see an actually drawing of roughly that in the next part...

This series has an unfortunate amount of unethical experiments, breeding, and hybridization fuckery, and this would feel incomplete if I didn't make an attempt to acknowledge that!

First off biological half ghouls. They're kind of a toss-up, they'll never have teeth as sharp as their ghoul parent, but there's a chance they'll only get certain teeth or none at all. Eto's the prior kind, her cuspids are a little pointy but she could easily pass as entirely human. I don't want to think about Ichika for any longer than I have to so that's all you're getting.

Artificial half-ghouls, Oggai and Quinx! They don't just magically grow sharper, your human teeth stay perfectly normal but the shift happens when they're broken and have to regrow after time/reaching a high enough frame, kind of an inevitability for artificial half-ghouls because human teeth are not made for ghoul shenanigans.

Amon gained a pretty good set of B2's but Takizawa's look a little like a weird yet subtle mix. (Not every ghoul falls neatly into one category or the other, but the vast majority do.) Kurona and Nashiro both ended up with B1's, Mucchan is a B2, Shirazu is as well but there was barely a change, Urie's a B1 and Saiko's never had to regrow her teeth but she'd be a B2. Aura, Higemaru, and Suzu are B2, Hsiao and Ryuusen are B1 but whether or not this has been shown is arguable.

Kaneki's teeth remained stubbornly humanoid regardless of how many times they were removed. Back when he had his mask made, Uta took note of this as an interesting trait and that's why the zipper-teeth are such a central feature. The Oggai are similar, but they were pretty good at keeping their human teeth anyways. More about this and the fruit bastard you'll notice is lacking from the half ghouls in a little.

Now the... breeders? What would you even call these three groups. Blades, Tsukiyamas, and Washuu Clan. The Blades aren't really interested in striving for appearances so they just have a mix of the two, mostly B2's with a couple B1's.

It gets a little more interesting for the other two.

The Tsukiyamas not only refine their ghoul traits into unique appearances, they pride themselves on those qualities and have the money to get away away with it. Their Kagunes may not be the strongest but by god do they draw the attention of the whole room in terms of unique mutations. So too are their teeth! Mirumo's are impressively noticeable B1's by themselves, but the real star is Shuu. Primarily inherited from his mother, they're one of the closest things to and old ghoul's teeth you'll find in the modern world. (Pictured bellow)

Outside of his pure influence, knack for luring in good dishes and wealth, part of the reason he's so liked at the restaurant is that he's just capable of ripping things up in a way that very few modern ghouls can. It's great fun to watch, but he rarely agrees to do so the first time around on account of his preference for actually prepared dishes and "polite" behavior, not to mention ghouls generally don't like to eat in front of others. But few are entirely immune to persuasion, and Shuu certainly isn't among them. It's quite the spectacle. Downsides: They're kind of awkward for such a verbose person, and if he bites a little too hard he can take his tongue clean off without meaning to. It'll grow back quickly but it's definitely not fun.

Now for the Washuu garden, where the only the thing they're growing is broken kids and misogyny.

As Rize states, the more human you are the "better" you are to them, and this extends to physical appearances as well. So, even the ghouls posses pretty human-looking teeth, but for most branches there's a noteable type that tends to surface. Arimas stay impressively human so they tend to be liked, Ihei's tend to be B2s, Kaikos willingly make them as dull as possible but they lean towards B1, Souzus tend to be B1s as well, Rize's branch tends to be B1 and the Furuta branch tends to be B2.

Which brings me to my final comment, fruit! An annoyingly unique case, with the closest perhaps being Suzu, but the operation and situation is vastly different for her and 179 is not real and cannot hurt me. Anyways, I've discussed his warring RC systems at length, on account of that with the added detail of the different teeth kinds for himself and Rize, if he was to lose all of those it might look a little like this.

I speak from experience when I say that wouldn't be fun but whatever he deserves the suffering. Enjoy never being able to close your mouth entirely without some amount of discomfort Nimura, you chose this life.

I really like how Ishida designs female characters but throughout :re several designs be more fanservice. Characters like Hsiao, Kiyoko Aura, and even Touka, who had a design change in 125 to make her eyes more angular and breast larger. It makes sense for characters like Rize, Nutcracker, and Eto due to their characters.

Are you female, anon? Touka was what, 17-18 at the start of the manga? By TG:re she was a twenty-something adult woman, I don’t find it odd that her figure has changed. Ishida needed to show (not tell) that time has passed. You don’t begrudge Hinami her physical changes, right?

Aura Kiyoko, when not fighting, wears intimidating power suits with shirts buttoned up and skirts of regulated just-over-the-knee length, intimidating high heels. Overall striving for that “scared but aroused” impression. Nothing fanservicey there at all in my opinion. In the hospital, Aura’s gender is almost irrelevant, overshadowed by Ishida prominently displaying her disfigurement and the fact that her job spares no one.

There is one fight with Aura when Ishida drew weird poses reminiscent of women in american superhero comics, yes. I don’t know how much of it is due to fanservice and how much because of Ishida’s shaky grasp on anatomy. But one fight doesn’t really constitute “overall design is fanservice”.

Hsiao I will give you. She really is a throwaway character with nothing but a sexy concept propping her up.

Nutcracker is a sex worker, and her usual design is how she dresses for work. Outside of work she’s only a tiny bit inappropriate - she’s got the barest hint of cleavage, her head and shoulders are covered, and her skirt is short but not scandalously so.

In Rize’s case food is a metaphor for sex, same as with Tsukiyama. Most of the time she appears “wild” in Kaneki’s head, which...

Stumbling Forwards

A/N: for @hamliet : a rough, mostly outline version of something I based on your Nothing More nor Less than a Mask, with different sources of suffering for each of them - Ui instead gets put on the "rescuing Hairu keeps slipping away from him" treadmill, while Hairu gets an extended stay at Hotel Aogiri.

Important background changes: Hinami isn't captured at the Auction, instead she retreats with Takizawa just in time to avoid Arima Squad, but not before she eats from a dead Dove, and also makes Haise eat some corpse too - and the feeling of small strong hands making him eat is strangely familiar (although he's actually remembering Touka).

Soon after the Auction, Saiko has a training match against Hairu, with Hairu using her quinque and Saiko using her kagune. Mistakes are made, which results in Saiko's attack snapping Hairu's quinque and driving a piece of it into her shoulder. While it's not a deep cut, it did bleed a lot - and an apologetic Saiko is the one who does Hairu's stitches (badly, then fixed by Juuzou). So Saiko knows what Hairu's blood smells like, put a pin in that.

When Arima pulls the trashed, bloody apartment like he does in yours - Ui is freaking the fuck out, thinking Hairu was killed.

Until Saiko, who has been wailing and crying, goes into Hairu's bedroom, stands next to the bed, and goes quiet and still. Ui can see Saiko put her head up, hear Saiko's deep inhale, realizes Saiko is smelling her way around the apartment, and is disturbed by how ghoul-like a behavior it is. It turns out that Hairu's scent in the apartment is "cold" - at least a full 24hr day old - and the blood doesn't smell like Hairu's.

Meanwhile, Shirazu keeps wandering around around, tilting his head, holding up his forefingers and thumbs to make a picture frame. Ui is now watching Shirazu, unable to look away, because Shirazu clearly thinks something is fishy, too.

Haise says they're going to do more kagune training when they're done working the crime scene and writing a report - and Shirazu goes rigid in a similar way to Saiko earlier. Because "kagune" is the answer he's been looking for, the reason the crime scene looks wrong is that the apartment is ransacked, not torn up by kagune and quinque battle-damage.

Ui can't stop himself from following Saiko as she scent-tracks out of the apartment, to the street. At first all hope seems lost, because the ghouls' trail clearly indicates they got into a car.

But.

Saiko says she can track the smell of nasty half-burnt fuel exhaust from a car, and see where that goes. Haise thinks it's a good idea, saying that if he was a criminal, he'd use a junk car that can be easily ditched, so there might be a scent trail to follow from there to a hideout.

Meanwhile, on Hairu's end of things, she's... coping. ish. See, Eto's put Hairu in the hideout that houses Naki, Miza, Ayato and Hinami, the Middle Management crew. And Hinami tries to counteract Eto's bitter, petty behavior towards Hairu, by trying to connect. Unfortunately for Hairu, Hinami's already tried connecting over books (Hairu's not well-read enough for it to work, and doesn't share Hinami's taste in books regardless), over movies (Hairu likes her movies sappy and dramatic, Hinami likes gruesome horror, which Hairu thinks is very appropriate for a ghoul)... Which leaves connecting over food, the last thing Hinami would want to talk about with a human.

(That Hinami is too unsettled by Hairu being a Dove to take her mask off isn't helping, with the eerily impersonal angular steel visor)

Except that she does know Hairu is supposed to eat human meat while she's pregnant, Eto put her in charge of that when she's not out on Aogiri business. And so, Hinami gives Hairu a plate of sausages, and refuses to tell obvious blatant lies about what the sausages are made of. Hairu miserably curling up and crying at the plate of food sparks an idea. Hinami sits down and tells a story... about how she cried as she cut the limbs off Mado Sr. and couldn't bring herself to eat any of him.

And that's the thing that does it. Hairu eats the sausages even if there's tears and snot down her face while she eats. After a couple of days of not-great vegetables(Hina can't cook so well, if it's not human flesh) and meat that makes her cry, Hairu comments to Hinami "Is it fucked-up that I feel less like a monster when you tell murder stories while I eat human flesh?"

Back to Ui & company...

They raid that hideout and find that's it's been packed up and abandoned, within the last 8 hours, according to how fresh the scents are to Saiko. Ui goes into a room that has a lock of pink hair left behind on the bed, cut as if on purpose. And while combing the rest of the place for evidence, they find sausages labeled "Hairu" and Ui fucking shatters. At least until Saiko, Urie and Haise all confirm that no, these sausages don't smell like her blood. While Saiko comforts Ui in a kinda tactless way, on tiptoes to cup his slumped head in her hands and softly telling him to keep his bowl cut firmly attached, Urie takes the role of tracker this time, revealing that the scent, Hairu included, leads down to the dockside - docks that point toward Rushima.

(Different players here had different meanings with the "Hairu" sausages left behind on purpose - Eto did it to torment Ui with grisly ideas, and torment Hairu with the knowledge that it was meant that way. Hairu did it, along with the lock of hair, to leave signs of life, and Hinami did it to say that they're treating their "prisoner" well.)

On Rushima, Hairu finally sees some of the Aogiri people she's stuck with unmasked, and has to wrestle with Hinami and Ayato looking at each other in ways that remind her of Ui looking at her.
