ya boy tried makeup for the first time this week, and while the initial reaction was essentially “eh. it’ll help with the cis sona during interviews,” i bought a neon eye shadow palette today and have decided that actually, the role of makeup is to make me feel as obnoxiously gay as possible lmaoo

Hello! I saw your post about taking asks and questions and I wanted to say that I really love your art, especially your rendering techniques. If you could give advice to someone who can only do linear but wants to get into rendering, where would you recommend that they start?
Thank you for all the beautiful art you share :)
I’m going to preface this with that I didn’t start to seriously render stuff until a few years ago and even now I don’t know what I’m doing.
ANYWAYS
The best place to start from what I found/experimented with is to begin with “cell shading”. Think like how cartoons/ early anime would color everything. You got the base color, a color for shadows, and a color for highlights. Cell shading doesn’t rely on airbrushing or realistic blending, it’s all just blocking out the darks from the lights to make things look like they have more dimension than they actually do. It’s also a great way to train yourself on where and how the light falls on a given object or form.
Once you have a grasp on cell shading, then you can start adding in airbrushes or soft brushes to blend where shadows and light meet if you want to make it a more 3D look.
I would also recommend trying out lighting and color studies if you want to start adding characters in specific environments or mood lighting. Knowing what your “light sources” are or where they would be will help you figure out where to put the shadows and highlights. Color theory is also important the further you get into rendering but that is a whole other can of worms. There are several coloring tutorials out there but if you wanted to try and figure stuff out as you go, try playing with the different layer types found in most art programs. Each type affects color differently so try to see what works best for the look you’re going for (I abuse overlay and multiply layers all the time)!
It’s a lot of trial and error but it’s definitely fun once you get the hang of it! And don’t worry if you feel like you aren’t learning fast enough! I have plenty of incredibly talented classmates who are just now learning how to render their art.
Hope this was somewhat helpful! I’m still learning how to do stuff myself so I may not be the best source for learning.

This was one piece that I felt executed rather easily easy. (Tbf, the composition and poses were never that complicated to begin with which was nice for me!)
There was a lot of discovery involved in the early passes with Jeramie’s posing, which I think was key to keeping him in character. I really labored on that expression throughout the whole process though, it was a challenge trying to strike such a fine line between the fear, sorrow, and a foolish guy trying to put on maybe the most important performance of his life. Proud of this one!

Also the inks! Because inks are my favorite, and i’m very proud of them.
