Today I attended a Sunday Unitarian Universalist service with a congregation I'd never visited before (long story why; this was nothing to do with the UU congregation I've written about here extensively in a complaining tone, which was when I was living in a different part of the country entirely), and I think it was the most bizarrely incongruous UU service I've ever seen. (And in a way that was generally, while not terrible or anything, not very impressive in my opinion.)

The service proported to be about Martin Luther King Jr. in honor of MLK Day Weekend I suppose (even though that was last weekend), and the sermon kept bringing up MLK and how we should think of him as a person and so on, but at the same time somehow the service was mostly about the value of personal responsibility and how we should all view our situations within a framework which centers it. I was scratching my head and listening hard the whole time trying to make sense out of what any of this had to do with MLK, but the most I could get was "we all have a lot of responsibilities we need to take charge of, and MLK did too".

I had no fundamental objection to the message about taking responsibility for one's situation, but it seemed extremely unoriginal, derivative, and cliched compared to just about any other UU sermon I've seen -- I've complained about the content of the sermons in the congregation I used to go to, some of which felt unoriginal in the sense of un-free-thinking, but all of them seemed to come from more creative and deep contemplation than this sermon did. What's more, a lecture on personal responsibility that doesn't include any sort of qualification is one of the last things I would expect from a source I associate with far progressivism. In particular, one line about "So maybe you have an evil ex, but remember that it was you who chose to get with that ex in the first place" shocked me in how it flew in the face of the much Younger and Very Online Generation -Style Progressivism, and I can't imagine such a suggestion seeing the light of day in the UU congregation I used to know so well which epitomized said subculture, including the constant "abuse is everywhere, never blame yourself for it" framework.

It just goes to show that the general ethos of UUism depends greatly on the particular congregation and minister and that I shouldn't assume, because of the heavy Youth Progressive Culture domination among the large congregation I was so involved in from 2019 to 2022, that all of UUism has turned in that direction. (Another very small congregation in my general geographic area that I've visited a couple of times also shows zero signs of this; then again, all but one or two of the congregants each time appeared to be of retirement age.)

The Social Security Administration is set to implement new rules to make it easier for beneficiaries to access certain benefits and increase the payments some may receive. The new changes affect Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, which provides more than 7 million Americans with monthly benefit checks. Those benefits are for seniors ages 65 and up, or adults and children who are disabled or blind, and who have little or no income or resources. “We already know that the benefit amounts that are available to people receiving SSI are incredibly low,” said Lydia Brown, director of public policy at the National Disability Institute. “They’re not as high as perhaps they could be to fully account for the needs that people have,” Brown said. The maximum federal monthly SSI benefit is currently $943 per eligible individual and $1,415 for an eligible individual and eligible spouse. The changes, which are slated to go into effect Sept. 30, are a “positive move in the right direction,” Brown said.

Updates to definition of public-assistance household

The agency on Thursday announced a new rule to expand the definition of a public-assistance household. Now, households that receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, payments and those where not all members receive public assistance will be included. With the change, more people may qualify for SSI, current beneficiaries may see higher payments and individuals who live in public-assistance households may have fewer reporting requirements, according to the Social Security Administration. The previous policy required all household members to receive public assistance. A public-assistance household will be defined as one with both an SSI applicant or beneficiary, as well as at least one other member who receives one or more forms of means-tested public income maintenance payments.

Other rule changes to help beneficiaries

The Social Security Administration is also working to address outdated practices through two other rules that are set to go into effect on Sept. 30. One change will expand the SSI rental subsidy policy to make it less likely that renting at a discounted rate or other rental assistance will affect a beneficiary’s SSI eligibility or monthly payment amount. That policy, which was already available in seven states, will apply nationally. Another change will make it so the SSA no longer counts food assistance toward support beneficiaries receive from other parties that may reduce their SSI benefit amounts.

The Social Security Administration keeps track of the resources SSI beneficiaries receive outside of their federal benefits, formally known as in-kind support and maintenance, or ISM. The purpose of ISM is to reduce SSI benefits if a recipient receives support from family and friends by treating that as unearned income, Milburn said.

Effective September 30th, Social Security Administration (SSA)’s changes to loosen Supplemental Security Income (SSI) eligibility will take effect.

I'm going to also add to this post a comment that I left on the video, offering further insight into the design intentions of the game, though the comment might not make as much sense if you haven't watched the video yet.

Hey, lead writer of Eureka here, first of all I wanna say how good and professional this review is, it’s almost indescribable how it feels to see our project taken so seriously and given real analysis, complete with visuals and everything! We would be super impressed and happy with it even if you didn’t like the game—but luckily it sounds like you loved it hahaha

I’d also like to address a few things throughout the video, not as arguments or rebuttals, just further developer insight for everyone

Re: “Urban Fantasy.” “Urban Fantasy” is basically just another term for “modern fantasy”, just a fantasy story that takes place in the 20th or 21st century and deals with the intersection of contemporary life with the supernatural, and it might be an Americanism, or even a Southern-ism, since it has a lot of connections and origins in the living folklore of New Orleans, so I shouldn’t be surprised it isn’t a term everyone is familiar with. Just think of it as the kind of genre where instead of the vampire living in a secluded scary castle, his name is Phil and he’s your roommate haha. What We Do in the Shadows, Shadowrun, and the World of Darkness games are all some other good examples of “urban fantasy.”

Re: Scooby-Doo. Oh we would LOVE for you to run a Scooby-Doo-like wacky mystery with Eureka. Even though the main tone is dark and gritty and noir, we did intentionally build it so that it could run more lighthearted stuff as well! There’s even a few Scooby-Doo references to be found throughout the text, and if we hit a certain stretch goal on the Kickstarter, we’re going to be adding a bunch of Scooby-gang-inspired traits, including the option to play a Talking Dog!

Re: Combat being the largest section, even larger than Investigation. First of all, that’s kind of an illusion that is the result of the game being unfinished. I have a tendency when I write rules to use really long sentences, overexplain things, repeat myself, etc, and that dramatically bloats the rules text and page count, but that’s why we have an editor! She goes through after the fact and trims most of the fat off my bloated writing style to make it flow smoother and read faster, and take up less space. The PDF that was read for this review has had the Investigation chapter copy-edited (and cut down in size by about 25%!), but the editor hasn’t gotten to the combat chapters yet, so they still have a hugely inflated page count. When she’s done with them, you can expect each combat chapter to also be cut down in size by about 25%, so they won’t be nearly so large a chunk of the book.

Secondly, I’ll explain our reasoning for why the combat chapters and advanced combat rules are such a big chunk of the rules text, it’s intentional design which I will now explain. If anyone still doesn’t agree with that design, that’s fair, and that’s why we made the Basic Combat Rules an option.

The reason that the advanced combat rules are the default, and the reason they exist at all, is because it incentivizes and rewards Investigation. If combat is super deadly, it makes Investigation, snooping, and spying more appealing than kicking down the door and getting your head blown off. But of combat is super deadly, it also needs to be very deep and tactical, because if it’s deadly but shallow, then there’s no player agency. “Combat starts, roll some dice, okay your guy is dead.” That’s no fun. So by adding rules and modifiers for cover/elevation, distance, the difference between a pistol and an assault rifle, etc. we make it so that not only is combat its own high-stakes puzzle, but make it so that when the PCs HAVE to engage in combat, all their investigation can really pay off and save their lives. Spying on a building to find out the number of goons stationed there and how they are armed helps you plan and assess risk, stealing the blueprints to the building helps you know how to get the drop on the goons, and know the best places to attack from so that they are stuck out in the open and you are not, etc. and having rules for those things means that all the PCs’ snooping and planning makes a real mechanical difference in whether they live or die.

That’s just my opinion though, and one of the biggest reasons WHY we decided to write the combat with as much depth as we did.

I've been thinking about that post that says something along the lines of "online leftist spaces are full of people who are convinced it's more important to do no wrong than it is to do any good"

and I agree. virtue signaling and performative activism are everywhere. In some cases due to a self-inflicted feeling of helplessness, in others apathy, in others a fear of their social standing taking a hit. We can do better. We must do better.

but setting that aside for a moment, I want to talk about Rachel Corrie.

Rachel Corrie (1979-2003) was an American peace activist. She was a member of the ISM, the International Solidarity Movement, a pro-Palestinian activist group active throughout Israeli-occupied Palestine. In 2003, during the second Intifada, Rachel was in Rafah with the ISM, trying to peacably halt the demolition of Palestinian homes by Israeli forces.

She was in a high-vis vest. She was protesting peacefully.

The Israelis ran her over with an armored bulldozer.

The Israeli army, of course, did their own internal investigation and determined the incident was an "accident". That the bulldozer operator "couldn't see her". Physicians and Palestinian civilians on the ground know differently. The Israeli ruling was condemned by Amnesty International, the Human Rights Watch, and other humanitarian agencies.

When Rachel's parents sued the Israeli government for a symbolic $1.00, just to admit there was negligence at play at the very best, Israel dismissed the case and upheld the ruling.

In the aftermath, Israelis mocked her and celebrated her death. There were a whole slew of Israeli soldiers and netizens making "Rachel Corrie pancakes" - pancakes with "art" of Rachel's face in the immediate aftermath of being crushed, sharing the pictures, making a joke of it. There are still people throwing Rachel Corrie Pancake Parties. Her legacy is still mocked and degraded.

Did Rachel Corrie's sacrifice change anything? Arguably, no. The Palestinian homes were still destroyed, the Intifada continued, and no one involved in her murder was ever prosecuted. Israel continued to occupy Rafah and the West Bank. Twenty-one years ago, Rachel lost her life trying to do good, but nothing changed.

But you know what?

She is still remembered. Her efforts have never been forgotten- she has a symbolic gravestone in Tehran. There are still memorial vigils being held for her.

Her actions still mattered. They mattered then, and they matter now.

I am not saying this to imply that we all should be a Rachel Corrie. I am saying this because it is important to remember. It is important to know. And it is important to realize, even if you cannot enact massive change, even if your efforts wind up being ultimately futile, it is still important to care. It is still important to try. Your efforts may not be rewarded tangibly, but they can bring hope. And hope is a lifeline.

I've mentioned it in passing several times I'm sure, often as a joke, but I wanted to actually explain why I bring up Call of Juarez Gunslinger as something well worth playing whenever it's on sale for cheap.

It's one of my favourite games, naturally. But like some other big personal picks it does a very important thing: It genuinely respects, loves and wants to be its medium. Call of Juarez Gunslinger is just such a videogame among videogames. It wants to be engaging, it wants the player's full interaction and investment. It's not there to chastise or reprimand you for indulging in wanton first-person violence. It's not embarrassed of being such a "disposable" media form and instead relishes in being a bombastic romp through all the stock and overdone bullet points of the Wild West.

To try and sum it up, the entire game is played through the recollections of old bounty hunter Silas Greaves, out for revenge, sharing his life story in a tavern to curious patrons. None of what you are doing may have actually happened, and almost certainly nowhere near the scale and high energy as the player experiences or can create. You gun down the same constant swathes of enemy types in the dozens or hundreds by the end, gaining more points the faster and more complex you dispose of them, then using those points toward unlocking new skills to kill in even more efficient ways. It's standard, nothing groundbreaking on the basic gunplay, but still fun and frantic enough to keep you moving, along with the tight pace.

By justifying all of these usual FPS-isms as a tall tale, by keeping the player agency toward more and more kills for the thrill of it because it's probably all bull, however overt it was on the writers' part Gunslinger manages to avoid a lot of trappings in more story-driven FPS without coming off as cynical preaching or veering into full dissonance with the need to kill to progress while bringing up how awful you are as the alleged protagonist.

Toward the end as narrator Silas gets more drunk and fuzzy in his tales he does begin to have the expected breakdown, questioning just how much bloodshed he caused in his lifelong vendetta on a single man. We don't know for certain. The rest of the fictional audience have long stopped suspending their own disbelief at him either.

When Silas has finally overstayed his welcome and share of drink with one too many absurdities, he finally lays out that he knows his old target is right there in the bar with him.

This is where you're given the standard and incredibly telegraphed choice of finding forgiveness or finally getting revenge. I myself am a sap and veered to the former but for the sake of this particular tangent on gameplay and narrative I wanted to focus more on the revenge ending.

While choosing redemption gives you only one more cutscene straight into the end credits, revenge has you play one final duel.

For the first and only time in the entire game you are playing as Silas in the present, the truth. You are standing there armed to kill a man, no other way to interpret or exaggerate it. All that violence, all that bloodshed, all those dozens of murders. However much was true, however exciting it was to hear about or merely dwell on the possibility. There and now in reality for the onlookers, someone is about to be killed. Everyone is absolutely mortified and can only scream and stay back for their own safety. Silas and you the player kill the old man he spent his whole life hunting down. It's the only option once locked in.

The ending that follows shows the brief aftermath with everyone shaken by such a harsh and sudden death in their life. Silas can only depart with a few words of uncertainty on his own empty future. It's par the course for a revenge story, especially one of its time span, but it's the sudden shift in tone, where the one and only time you're killing in the present is met with such horror that stands out to me. Even in the final moments after, no one even thinks to tell Silas he did wrong, or you by extension. They can only stand there scared for their own safety.

Whatever the full intention was on the part of the developers, there's just such an oh so nearly perfect balance for heavily intertwining the narrative and character actions with the gameplay while allowing the player to enjoy it unquestioning, until right at the end when all of the real weight to taking even just one life can come crashing down.

Basically the way it's still such a fun and often silly game but manages to potentially be so serendipitous with some critique on violence in games, westerns or media in general, compared to a lot of others that try to bank on those as their whole ploy, Call of Juarez Gunslinger has my respect way more.

The one and only thing I think could have really wrapped it up fully is if there was a third ending if you died during the final duel. It only makes sense when it's the one thing that's actually happening, right? But honestly even if that had ever been in consideration by the devs, this was still a budget game overall so I'll let it slide. 10/10 always, buy it next sale on your platform of choice.

Here’s some old art of HAWKMOTH, a character I have played with a bunch but that never made it onto Tumblr. Hawkmoth is ‘prodigiously and perhaps even detrimentally clairvoyant’, to the point of spending most of his life literally just walking around and stumbling into food, shelter, and problems that need solving at exactly the most opportune time. Don’t ask him when you die. You’ll get a serious – and, probably, correct – answer.

Hawkmoth is a member of the clandestine Order of the Moth, an order of oracular servants of the Road’s native-born god of time Thysan Thaumeta – which is, literally, an enormous moth. If the moth dies, time ends. So, pretty important to have a small town’s worth of well-trained guardians to protect it. Their compound, high in the dense forests of the Green, is miles away from any outpost, town, or settlement. They are insular and weird, but not unfriendly or unhelpful. 

Hawkmoth is the most powerful clairvoyant of any of them, to the point of finishing people’s sentences, answering questions that haven’t been asked, or providing portents of future events to people out of nowhere. He sees a multitude of timelines, often simultaneously, meaning that he can aggregate the likelihood of a certain event happening relatively easily. Mostly, this power works in regards to his own day-to-day life, although he can extend it to others especially if their ‘path’ crosses his own in a meaningful way. He spent most of his life eschewing any kind of agency, and simply went along with whatever his powers told him would happen.

He usually doesn’t act on his premonitions because, usually, his premonitions also include what he is going to say or do. So for a long time, he was so reliant on his powers that he just assumed he would be in the ‘right’ place, at the ‘right’ time, to say the ‘right’ thing, for whatever outcome he predicted was most likely, in every situation he found himself in.

His powers also mean that he is an absolute fucking demon in combat – he knows every move you and he are going to make the second you unsheathe your blade, and he knows every opening in your guard, and he has the ability to play the fight in his head a hundred times before you even know you’re going to be fitting. Hawkmoth is still bound by the limits of his physical body, but as long as his opponent has an exploitable weakness, he can find it – all the trial and error he needs to do is already done, in a version of events that won’t happen because of Time Bullshit.

Hawkmoth befriended August En-Zaied during the events of the Wild Hunt (see: Godslaughter), after his time-based powers allowed him to overcome Ganzrig Khalgar’s luck-based powers and he defeated her. When the Home Team defeated Glory and their slain allies were brought back to life, Hawkmoth vowed to help August return Ganzrig’s ashes to her family back on their homeworld of Ismes. But when he left The Road and was separated from Thysan Thaumeta, he lost his clairvoyant powers almost entirely (basically giving him a brain aneurysm. He walked it off). Eventually, with the help of August and his family, Hawkmoth grew to develop his own agency and decision-making abilities. His powers of clairvoyance returned, and Hawkmoth was able to save the En-Zaieds from certain doom. Now, Hawkmoth is less like a robot operating on a script, and has been accepted whole-heartedly into August’s family.
