I Will Marry Him
Dai could felt his hand on her back.
She did her very best not to recoil.
This was where she was supposed to be, this is the place she had been meant to be.
It didn't matter that it wasn't the one that she had wanted.
Nor did it matter that she didn't love Alaric Mulvey, or even liked him all that much.
He was powerful, his family was well regarded, he was rich, society adored him.
Dai should probably think herself lucky that he was just five years older than her, instead of twenty, and that he was handsome enough, but she really didn't.
Of course, she knew she could have had it worse. She was thankful that it wasn't.
That didn't mean that she was happy by any means, though.
Or that it wasn't hard for her to act like the pretty, polite little fiancée Alaric and her parents wanted her to be.
It didn't mean that she didn't dread the future of being a mother and wive, but nothing more.
It didn't mean that Dai didn't imegan the touch of the man she was to marry, by to be the hand of someone else. Someone that didn't see her as nothing but a pawn in the game that was high society. Someone that didn't believe her to be a burden he had to take upon him to get the alliance of her parents.
A person that didn't tell the woman he was to wed that she should just do here part.
That hadn't just told her to her face that they thought nothing of her, that they didn't intend to stay faithful in the slightest, but expected her to be.
Someone that didn't threaten to hurt her, or just break off the deal that was so important to her family, if she didn't act like he wanted her to.
His hand wandered from her back to her waist, pulling her closer, while smiling about something the certainly powerful and well regarded man in front of them said.
Dai did her best to smile at the man that made some jocks regarding how obedient she was and if she would be like that in bed to.
It was really revolting, she tried her best to just tune out what was said. It wasn't like anyone cared what she thought anyway, not here. No one expected her to do anything but look pretty and appear like she was happy that she was going to marry Alaric. The latter took enough of her energy already, she didn't have to hear that man also treating her like a priced pet. Not today.
Today she would just ignore everything and try to conjure any happy memory that would prevent her from braking out of the role she had been assigned.
She thought about the philosophy and since studies with Alim, when he visited the house of his benefactors.
And the races when riding out with Sameria the young noble woman her parents had employed in the hope of getting Dai to become more of a proper lady.
Or Sameria's hands on her hips when she had caught her during a game of catch, pressing Dia's back against a tree. The smile in her eyes, the closeness of her lips-
Dia had to stop herself before she could continue that path, down to the memory of the last time she had spoken to her companion and feel all the pain letting go of her again.
Instead, she tried to think of Conner making jokes to cheer her up after her parents had once again for bidden her from doing anything they deemed improper, like attending a lecture on new finds in biology, or going to a tea party with a woman known for her progressive views.
Of Conner when they had been younger, and he had not been her guard yet, just a servant boy that was brave enough to stay by her side even if her parents had forbidden Dia to spend time with children not of her standing.
Of learning to ride.
Of getting Deror, even as a colt, elegant and so warm.
Tried to think of summer picknicks with friends, discussions of art, politics and science.
Of the way the strawberries had made Sameria's lips looked even more red and pretty. Of thinking about how they would taste if she leaned in-
No, she couldn't, she couldn't allow her self to think about her.
She had no right to.
Dia would marry this man, she would be his wife.
And Sameria would continue to be a strong woman. One that carved her own way. That knew her around politics and continually rouse though society's ranks, building a place for herself where she could be herself, and powerful.
Sameria would be a woman that didn't just give into pressure, that overcame social norms to become one of the few powerful women in their own right this pretentious lot had.
Dia would only be able to watch, no longer able to talk to her about politics or about Dia's own scientific studies. She would never lean against Sameria while going through papers, listening to the soft sounds the woman Dia loved made while strategizing, or reading the news.
It was suddenly hard to breath.
She would never be with Sameria again. Never play catch while on a picnic. Never again would that woman press her against a tree and kiss her after catching Dia.
She would never be able to hold Sameria in her arms again, never again see he contrasts of her own lighter skin against Sameria's dark one.
Dia turned to the man next to her, "I need to excuse myself for a moment, dear." she says before leaving the man she was to marry behind to grieve over the woman she would have wanted to, if that would have been possible. She would have ignored her parents' will if she would have married Sameria.
She left the ballroom into the direction of the next bath, not show make her suffering obvious.
She should have ignored their will to leave with Sameria as the woman had offered.
Dia let herself fall against a wall when she was far enough out of sight to feel safe enough to let her mask slip for a moment.
She wanted to cry.
She wanted to run away and find Sameria.
She couldn't stand this. But she had to.
Note
Welcome, hope you liked this story!
To be honest I'm not all that happy with the ending.
But at about eight hundred words, the tragic lesbians forced them self suddenly into this story much more than I wanted them to.
I consider writing a continuation to this where I reunite Sameria and Dia.
This is a story that is probably not going to be one of my favorites, but I really like the Dia and Sameria as characters.
Hope you do too!
Feedback and constructive criticism are really welcome

I am not sure who enjoys it more when we have to explain that no, hubs and I are not high school sweethearts. We couldn't stand each other 90% of the time. He was an arrogant asshole and I kept stealing his girlfriends. We knew each other as children, our best friends lived next door to each other, and we routinely brawled in the street, complete with me throwing rocks at him.
It was purely the universe clanging our heads together until we both went oh. Been together for 15 years now, and if you had told either of us that in high school, we would have laughed at you.

Chestnut (for the ask game)
So turns out chestnut does not appear anywhere in my original story so far! We need to change that! Funnily there are a few brunettes in there, but no one specifically has chestnut-colored hair.
in my loose collection of words, however:
Chestnut-coloured hair and a gown the hue of peacock feathers had caught her eye in a spur of the moment, and she had realised that other girls her age had no such problems.
The problem is lesbianism

I love old media warning society of ✨ dangerous butches ✨ bc it’s always
“this woman WILL wear mens shoes and will STEAL YOUR WIFE”
“butch dykes are HANDSOME and GOOD IN BED”
“you WILL be seduced and they have a HIGH SUCCESS RATE”
“they prey on women DISAPPOINTED IN MEN and give them WAY MORE ORGASMS”
“DON’T let your loved ones receive LOVE from AFFECTIONATE LESBIANS”

we heard that you were very disappointed in us both as a generation and specifically as a generation of women (emphasis yours), how we had let ourselves go and now we were slutty and ill-tempered and holding onto notions of feminism like "having a savings account" and "equality."
we were very sorry about it, we didn't realize. it is very hard for you, in your life, because your entire definition was centered around the word providing, and that's a really vague and undulating word. it is hard to be a provider. for your purposes, the word provider here can be defined as "having a job", although it sometimes also extends to "doing yard work", "grilling on occasion," and "knowing basic car anatomy."
we had to do some reading but we divided it out. do not worry. high-value women will fill in the rest of the gaps of your life - all those silly feminine things like doing the dishes. we didn't realize we had asked too much when we asked you to pick up after yourself. we did not realize you were rendered small and scared and crying about the possibility of doing the laundry. here is a joke to lighten the sentiment: a man that listens when you talk to him.
we heard about how we had fallen from glory and it sickened us and made us very, very sad. lindsey had to cut all her hair off and tara threw up. we lit one million candles and we are going to have a vigil about it tonight. all of the people in this world that you do not approve of are going to be there and we will all be in mourning colors because we have lost your respect which is of course the only thing that any of us were looking for.
we searched around our bedrooms and our closets and for some of us it took a while but we all found the pricetag that we were originally born with, the one that gave our listing offer, the one that smells like rot and pine needles. we were horrified because many of us had taken deductions and hadn't realized it. i had scraped my knees and decided to be a lesbian so they had to take my voicebox out so i could never call home again. janice had been with too many people overall so we had to put her into the big squisher that will hopefully collapse her walls so that when you're with her, you'll feel so big and powerful. it will be like you're conquering something instead of being close with someone.
we are all going to the funeral of feminism and we will tear at our bodies and fall over ourselves. we will invite you onstage for a live recording of your podcast about the occasional minor inconvenience of self-reflection. you will talk about how we have targeted you and made you feel the sweat slick down your back, and we will teach you basic self-defense out of solidarity.
do not worry, we are seeing to all the outliers. taylor asked to be taken seriously so we have shipped her off to prison. laura asked you to accept her femininity regardless of her presentation. you will be happy to hear all women are now and forever going to have to be small and thin and pretty and white and ablebodied and quiet and unassuming and ladylike, which is different than how society has previously told us to act.
i am going to have to shave off my jawline, which is a little masculine, and they are going to have to reshape my hands, which are very square and thick - all the work i've done with them has made their veins stand out, so we're just going to have to exsanguinate me. i am horrified to have been out in public like this.
we are going to sit around the campfire and we will talk about being weird little girls that made potions in pink teacups. we will talk about the first time we made a difference. we will talk about the private lives of crickets, and then, at the stroke of three in the morning (the witching hour, obviously) - we will all promptly shut up.
and this will be your beautiful world. this silence that spans every corner of every street and every zoom meeting and every alley. i do not think you'll notice at first - it will be the same as every television show and movie and book. we will all just simply sit there in our doll dresses and smile blithely at your advances and none of us will do you the dishonor of answering and none of us will appear to be in distress and none of us will nag you or make a fuss or get hysterical about it. it will just be quiet, and you will say finally, some peace for once! and we will smell of smoke and our teeth will be white and the next day will come.
tonight we are going to bury the last little bits of our humanity. you are not invited. it is going to be ugly.

The Radiant Circle
Tumblr media
The Radiant Circle is a work-in-progress contemporary fantasy interactive novel with elemental magic, a heavy hand of romance, and a salt-sprinkle of mystery. The story is rated 18+ and may contain triggering content for some.
↪ introduction (updated 7/22/24) ⟢ demo (upcoming fall/winter)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You were born without any magic into a long lineage of sorcerers who serve the Night Circle—a division of the Radiant Circle, the central governing body that maintains order among sorcerers. Even now when you live outside of the magical community, you’re still required to report to the local leadership about the magic you still don’t have.
Of course, only after having accepted a life without magic, you awaken a latent magical power too great to be yours. Myths speak of such a sorcerer, a Resonant Soul capable of mastering all four elements, reincarnated throughout history to bring balance to the magic community. So little is truly known, but that can’t be you.
But what if it is?
Thankfully, as an investigative journalist, what you do best is hunt for the truth. To unravel the secrets of your soul, you’re forced back into the world of sorcery to navigate ancient rivalries and contend with those who may fear your newfound power and seek to bury it for good.
Because while most didn't believe the myths to be true, others have been preparing for your return. Most of all? You four souls bonded to yours for eternity.
Tumblr media
Play as the main character ⟢
Choose your name, appearance, gender, and sexuality.
Develop your personality as a harmonizer or disruptor—will you bring unity or will you bring destruction?
Gain mastery over elemental magic as the Resonant Soul—how much mastery in each element is up to you.
Travel the world while earning or losing influence through your decisions—will your reputation precede you or will you remain unknown?
Five romance options ⟢
Two pansexual men, one lesbian, and two gender-selectable romance options... and a hidden sixth romance option... with the potential for more to unlock later.
Four soulmates who will be revealed over the course of the story—your bonds, whether platonic or romantic, are yours to develop.
And if you don’t like romance, you can improve your friendships instead.
Or if you’re a misanthrope, deteriorate all your relationships to your liking.
Good endings? Check. Bad endings? Also check.

You ✦ 26-year-old journalist from Seattle, USA (ℹ) Rejected by the magical community because your magic never awakened, you once sought to understand why before later turning to a career of journalism to attempt to uncover truths that don’t have to do with magic. Your dissertation was titled “Unveiling the Hidden: A Comparative Study of Secret Societies and Their Influence on Modern Media." After landing your dream job as an investigative journalist, you're returning home to Seattle for your assignment.
⟡ tropes include main character (surprise! you're the main character), insider/outsider, the most wanted (because you are a…), person of mass destruction, (possible) living legend, (possible) lust object, (seemingly) cosmic plaything…
Arseau Nassiet ⟡ High Justicar 31-year-old water sorcerer (he/him) from Seattle, USA (ℹ) A talented water sorcerer, your older brother Arseau is well loved within the Night Circle's upper echelons, but he'd never brag about it. He has been away from home for over a decade, raising ranks within the circle alongside his best friend. He coordinates his visit home with yours during the holidays so he can see his favorite younger sibling (never mind that he has only one sibling—you).
⟡ tropes include protective older brother, brainless beauty (yeah, he's a himbo), the caregiver/caretaker, the confidant (if you want), the informant, nice guy (someone has to keep the peace between the Pico brothers), the reliable one...
César Pico (RO) ⟡ Archumbricar 31-year-old earth sorcerer (he/him) from Tijuana, MX (ℹ) One of the highest ranking earth sorcerers in the world, César is seen as the unofficial heir of the current Night Luminary—and he takes the role seriously. As your brother's best friend, he has been a permanent fixture in your life as far as you remember—another persistent reminder of the magic that has remained inaccessible to you and the community that left you behind. He's at least an attractive reminder, even if it's unfortunate that his rare smirk proves that he knows it.
⟡ tropes include the hero, the cold & brooding heir, older brother's best friend/forbidden love, age gap, opposites attract, danger deadpan, glory hound, tall dark & handsome (obviously) ⟡ solo-route (with a possible rivalry with his brother), borderline enemies to lovers, (possible first love), forced proximity, maybe the slowest burn
Rafa Pico (RO) ⟡ High Justicar 27-year-old fire sorcerer (he/him) from Tijuana, MX (ℹ) The younger brother of César....and also his left hand man even though he doesn't take his position within the Night Circle very seriously. He doesn't take anything very seriously except his freedom. Especially his freedom to flirt his way into anyone's good graces.
⟡ tropes include the explorer, the charming playboy, childhood/long time friend, (his) unrequited crush (on you), the (horny) bard, speed demon, hell seeker, elegant classical musician... ⟡ solo-route (with a possible rivalry with his brother), friends to lovers but he never really saw you as a friend, forced proximity, slow burn
Tumblr media
Gazi Gharib (RO) ⟡ Photojournalist 28-year-old (she/her or he/him) from New York City, USA (ℹ) Your roommate and best friend ever since you moved to NYC, they're always ready to help you investigate something new and dangerous.
⟡ tropes include the innocent, the best friend, the encouraging charmer, the serial romeo, the casanova, agent mulder (the believer), empathetic communicator, spirited competitor, the klutz ⟡ solo-route or poly-route with Deniz, besties to lovers (and you can start at the lover bit if you'd like cause this one is a...), faaaaaast burn
Deniz Yılmaz (RO) ⟡ Private Investigator 26-year-old (he/him or she/her) from Istanbul, TR (ℹ) Your next-door-neighbor and childhood best friend. You haven't kept in close contact, but they're the first person you think of seeing when you visit home.
⟡ tropes include the jester, agent scully (the skeptic), street-smart investigator, hardboiled detective, erudite stoner, literal-minded/snark knight combo, childhood friends, loyal supporter, gadgeteer genius ⟡ solo-route or poly-route with Gazi, childhood friends (or was it more?) to lovers, (possible second chance romance...), somewhere between slow and fast burn
Dr. Noel Sung (RO) ⟡ Journalist 41-year-old (she/her) from London, UK (ℹ) Your graduate school mentor who you credit for preparing you to land a job at The New York Times as prestigious as it is. She's now your direct supervisor, and she has quite the assignment for you.
⟡ tropes include the magician, high-powered career woman, absent-minded professor(/former forbidden love?), age gap, charismatic intellectual, intuitive leader, pragmatic idealist, deadpan snarker, determinator, shrinking violet, (your possible unrequited crush on her goes here)… ⟡ solo-route, workplace romance (technically; she's your boss now), slow burn

An ancient, hidden society of sorcerers ⟢
The Radiant Circle is the central governing body that maintains harmony and order among sorcerers, as well as keep their community secret. It was originally formed and led by the Resonant Soul (called the High Guardian—this is you) and the most powerful elemental sorcerers of the time (called the Founding Guardians—these are the four souls bonded to you) as an alliance of sorcerers from across the New Kingdom of Egypt.
After its formation, the magical community grew, and eventually, the Radiant Circle was divided into four smaller regional circles called the Ephemeral Circles: the Night Circle (you know the most about this one), the Dawn Circle, the Day Circle, and the Dusk Circle. These four circles, also called luminariates, are the main governing bodies of the current world of sorcery. Every known family of sorcerers lives under the eye of the Radiant Circle and one of the four Ephemeral Circles.
Only the Resonant Soul can be the High Guardian of the Radiant Circle. Only the four souls bonded with Resonant Soul can be the Founding Guardians. During periods where the Resonant Soul or the Guardians aren’t alive, these positions are left vacant and the Ephemeral Circles meet as the Radiant Council annually instead. Unfortunately, it's been so long since there has been a Resonant Soul that there aren't many people left who remember who sits at the top of the hierarchy.
You live as a Threshold—an uninitiated sorcerer, typically a child who can't use magic yet—within the luminariate called the Night Circle. You sit at the bottom of the hierarchy, but every other sorcerer you know? César is an Archumbricar, the right hand of the Night Luminary and leader of the Night Circle. Arseau and Rafa are César's High Justicars, his right and left hands. Your dads even play a role, advising the Luminary from their position in the Night Weave.
A single soul that can control all four elements, reincarnated once again—you ⟢
Before you became the Resonant Soul, you were a child born without magic to two prominent sorcerers sometime before recorded human history begins. Back then, it was common to put the child of every sorcerer through a resonance ritual, even children of sorcerers born without magic who always died in the process. But where there's a will, there's a way, and someone really wanted you to live and created circumstances that bound your souls together—one into endless reincarnation and the other into endless immortality.
You meet the four original Guardians over the course of hundreds of years. Your bonds are unique and have chained the fate of their souls with yours so that they are reincarnated in an endless cycle by your side. Even so, you've lived more lives without them than with them, lived more lives without magic than with it. Almost as if you're fighting a losing battle against knowing your true soul.
Only the Resonant Soul can resonate with all four types of elemental magic, but your magic remains locked away until you regain your memories (how're you supposed to regain memories you don't remember you need to regain? then again, how safe would it be to give you all that power and no recollection of all the mistakes you've made?). The Guardians are known for their extraordinary abilities in one element; their magic isn't sealed away, only their memories (which still isn't convenient—how are you supposed to know who they are if they don't know who they are?).

I know we aren't supposed to pay attention to celebs but as a detrans lesbian it genuinely hurts seeing these high-profile daughters of celebs (some of whom are lesbians) transition and suddenly gain more fame because of it.
Like, when Cher's daughter came out a lesbian she (Cher) practically kicked her out the house. Now that she's a transgender man she's way more famous and their familial relationship is apparently all hunky-dory now (gee, I wonder why). Sting's (the singer) daughter Eliot came out as a masc/androgynous lesbian in 2015 but is now nonbinary, got top surgery, and is getting more acting roles. Sade released her first song in years about her 'trans son''... like, you couldn't have made a song about loving your daughter until now?
I know the more cynical among us will write these off as just attempts to get more attention from the media and go on about "nepo babies" or whatever but it's still painful yknow? The only thing I'm understanding from this is that being a lesbian woman - especially a non-hyperfeminine one - is never enough no matter how relatively privileged you are.
(Cher's case is especially damaging considering she treated her lesbian daughter like shit until she transitioned and yet she's viewed as a 'gay icon'. Goes to show that people don't care about lesbians I guess?)
100%. I hate seeing this shit, and I think you’re right. Being a masculine lesbian is never enough. It’s never going to be something that people admire and look up to in a patriarchal culture. We will never get the praise that any other demographic of people get, because we go against all of society’s rules.
Being trans or nonbinary is partially a way for these women and their families to feel noteworthy and special.
Or it’s a way to feel more accepted and understood within heteronormative society, like it was for me.
It bothers me when I see any parent getting clout for having a trans kid. So much virtue signaling.
