Love Händel Headcanons

|All Three|

• they were all born around 1960

• they all met in high school

○ Danny met Swampy when he was running late one day. he went to lock up his bike while Swampy was smoking in the bike shed. Danny bummed a cigarette off him and they started chatting

○ Bobbi and Swampy had been aware of each other (they'd both been in band in middle school) but didn't properly meet until they got kicked out of class on the same day

○ at some point, both Dan and Bob sat with Swamps at lunch on the same day. then the next. and then the next. and then--

• They all had interest in hard rock before meeting but Bobbi was actually the one to introduce them to metal music and the metal scene

• they held regular but informal jam sessions for years, using the dilapidated shed in Danny's backyard before ever forming a band

• the decision to start a band came during an early 80s blunt sesh. they were having a deep conversation about what they wanted out of life. none of them wanted to go to college or join the corporate world or start a family. danny always dreamed of being a rock star. and since they were all musicans, yeah, why not!

• 'Music Makes Us Better' is what their typical repertoire sounded like back in the day, and 'Snuck Your Way' was their odd ball. though when they reformed they experimented more and became less strictly metal

• they never had a manager; they always split their earnings three-ways. in the early years they took turns organizing gigs and venues

• they grew a small, dedicated fanbase in their early years, being big fish in a small pond in the Tri-State Area music scene. by the mid-80s they were popular enough to be featured in independent subculture magazines and college radio shows, and eventually started touring the country by '84

• however, they didn't sell out many venues until they blew up in popularity with 'You Snuck Your Way into My Heart'

• overall Love Händel was started in '81, and their career lasted from '82 until '97

• Sherman was the first to leave the band. since he was the Heart™, Love Händel folded days later (the concert Linda and Lawrence went to wasn't a planned farewell concert, it was just the last show before they broke up. it just became colloquially known as The Farewell Concert)

• they are dudes from the 80s; they're all emotionally constipated. gave each other a lot of the classic "dude are being vulnerable rn? what are you, a girl?" type of shit. so a LOT of their conflicts are caused by suppressed emotions finally blowing up and their inability to communicate with each other

• honestly they could be pretty vicious with their banter at times; if you overheard them then you'd think they despised each other.

• though tbh if anyone outside of their trio ever gave one of them even 10% the attitude they have each other, the other two would flip their shit ("fuck you YOU can't talk to him like that! only we can!")

• and that said, after the events of DWGTBBT when they decide to try being friends again, they elect to go to group therapy (affectionately referred to as 'couples therapy' and 'our rock'n'roll guidance counselor'). that, plus their "old age", has softened them up a bit

• they explored each other's bodies--*armed guards tackle me to the ground*

• back in the day their favorite movies to rent together are 'Buckaroo Banzai', 'Rock: Its Your Decision' (esp while stoned), and 'This Is Spin̈al Tap'. For the holidays, they like to throw on the 'Black Christmas' and 'Muppets Christmas Carol'

• they're all snobby in their own ways; Danny with music esp rock, Bobbi with fashion and art, and Sherman with literature and classic comedy (though he's the least likely to be a dick about it)

• they all have poor self-esteem in their own, though similar, ways; at various points in their lives, they've all been made to feel like they were obnoxious and "too much". they found solace in music and in each other. playing together makes them feel special, accepted, or useful

• they informally reformed after DWGTBBT, usually playing at local events while Sherman was on his lunch break (technically Bob and Danny were on break too but they're their own bosses so their breaks could be whenever). they officially reformed full-time before the events of Across the 2nd Dimension. they were setting off for their reunion tour when the Normbots attacked

• his full name is Daniel Alexander Makriyannis

• was an only child, but grew up close with several cousins who were basically siblings

• Greek American; his dad's parents immigrated in the 1920s, his mom was born in Greece but moved to the US as a kid to live with an aunt

• grew up in Peoria Illinois where his upbringing was painfully average

• got his first guitar for his 10th birthday

• before then, he started spending a lot of his free time just hanging out at the local music store, and eventually became a pseudo-son figure to the store owner, Mac

• when he was 12 he was actually hired (under the table) at the store as his first job. he mainly did small jobs like cleaning and moving stock in the backroom. he was promoted to cashier around 14

• his dad worked as a desk jockey at a toy factory and was transferred when Danny was 16, forcing the family to move to Danville

• naturally, Danny was devastated about leaving behind his friends, family, and city to move to the suburbs

• for years he was the only member of the band who has ever had a driver license

• cis bi man; it didn't click until he was 30. he'd always been aware of his attraction to men but subconsciously repressed/downplayed it ("its totally normal to get horny looking at dudes and for your heart to hurt when you see queer shit it doesn't make me gay im straight iM STRAIGHT")

• a couple of years after the band broke up, he met and was briefly married to a woman named Trish, but that started and fizzled out in <3 years.

• as a young man, his main flirting tactic was to flex his knowledge of and opinions on music. he usually came across as a dick so it never really worked

• not really an athlete but definitely the most active and physically fit of the band. he weight trains and goes for runs at least once week

• his full name is Robert Eric Gaitán

• an only child

• naturally brunette. naturally hairy too but shaves his body

• whenever he has a cold, he sounds like Candace-on-parsnips

• grew up Catholic. neither he nor his parents were very religious, they just went to church on Sundays and for big holidays because, well, "that's what you do"

• he was only in the church choir for a couple of years, but it really helped him develop his vocal range. it also taught him how to read sheet music

• his parents are from Mexico. his father was a tailor and his mother was seamstress, and they met when they started working in the same shop in Monterrey

• they later eloped to america, where they moved around a lot (Bobbi was born in Chicago) before settling in Danville when he was little

• his parents never taught him Spanish while he was growing up. it was not out of shame, just studies at the time thought speaking Spanish at home would make it harder for kids to learn English, and they wanted to give him a headstart (in fact, they were ecstatic when he chose Spanish as his language class in high school)

• his parents didn't pressure him into joining the family business, but they insisted on teaching him the basics of mending clothes. as a tween he asked to be taught how to read patterns and how to use the sewing machine

• he's a cis(ish) gay man; he's known since was 11 or 12

• when he realized he was gay he broke down and was despondent for several days. he felt like he HAD to tell his parents and it took him weeks to build up the courage to do so

• his parents, for their part, were surprisingly okay with it (if in a fearful "don't tell anyone, this stays within the family, don't act gay in public, this is your cross to bear. love you <3" kinda way)

• honestly they were way more distraught when he dropped out of college to be in Love Händel

• he's been naturally fey his whole life but starting in middle school he did his best to hide it, mostly by keeping quiet. when he spoke he tried to keep his voice low, giving short clipped responses, and he'd sit on his hands or cross his arms to keep from being expressive. during interviews with the band, it made him come across as rude and cold, so he was the least popular among fans

• however, he let himself relax and be himself around his closest friends (including Danny and Sherman ofc). and when the band broke up he had a "fuck it" moment and stopped masking all together, letting his genuine personality shine through all the time.

• he hasn't officially come out of the closet to the public, though his sexuality has been an open secret in the industry for years

• has had a poor relationship with food most of his life. he's never been officially diagnosed with an ED, but his eating habits are definitely disordered and unhealthy. he passed out from hunger multiple times in the 80s and 90s.

• in high school he had a deep connection with an exchange student from Montreal named Wendel Ngo that definitely would've turned romantic if either of them acted on it

• a hopeless romantic but has the worst luck dating. like, murphy's law levels of bad luck. the men he dated weren't awful, it just seemed that something crazy would happen early in the relationship that'd end it. like, a-boulder-crashing-through-the-café-they're-in-and-running-his-date-over levels of crazy

• simultaneously touch-starved and avoidant as hell

• is genuinely a talented hairdresser, just his signature 'do is, well, his signature! plus one of the most popular styles requested at his salon

• went bald due to the stress of the band dissolving, malnutrition, and because hair bleach in the 80s was straight up corrosive

• he has a French bulldog named Basquiat whom he spoils rotten. she's not allowed on the couch though (she gets her own)

• his full name is Sherman Lee Lundy (his birth name was Marcia Anne)

• has a sister named Glenda who's 2.5 years younger than him, plus half-siblings he's never met

• his parents never married. his father left when his mom was pregnant with his sister

• since said mother had to work A LOT to keep her kids fed, they were basically raised by their Nana

• he got the nickname 'Swampy' from his Nana--his mother called him 'Marshy' as a baby and because his Nana is a real Wise Guy™ started calling him Swampy, and it stuck.

• trans & bi; he's known he was a boy since he was little but didn't realize he was into men until high school

• similar to Ringo, he was "The Weird One" but got the most fan mail

• also got laid the most, though didn't date very much (it was easier to stay stealth while making out in a car at night than while going out to dinner)

• slouches so much because 1) drummer 2) he didn't get top surgery until his 40s so he tried to make his chest smaller that way 3) tbh when you read you have to slouch majority of the time

• his Nana was pretty supportive, if clueless. like she never really "got" what "transgender" was, but if little Swampy hated his name and wanted to he referred to as a boy, that was fine by her ("I used to be in vaudeville, I've known plenty of inverts").

• when he hit puberty and his boobs started coming in, she dug through their attic and found an old sewing pattern for a Symington Side Lacer--a proto-binder from the '20s, meant to achieve flat silhouettes. she made Swampy a few lacers of his own, including the mesh one he wore on tour

• though he didn't get his name legally changed until he was an adult, he picked out the name Sherman for himself as a little kid; he named himself after Herman Munster but "didn't want to make it too obvious"

• his mom was too busy with work to really react or intervene with his transition. one time she came home early and walked in on him chopping all his hair off. she just sighed, pinched her nose, and told him to sweep up when he was done

• since he's been openly a boy pretty much her whole life, his sister didn't know he was trans until they were adults; when she was little, she saw baby photos of a girl who wasn't her and heard mentions of a 'Marcia'. when she asked Nana and Swampy about "her" they hastily said things like "no one, don't worry about it" so. she became convinced she had an older sister who died that no one brought up because it was too painful

• as a tween, Glenda had a short crocheting phase (it was the 70s after all), and Sherm picked it up after she dropped it. It's something he still does to this day

• he was a classic hyper 'he's not dumb he's just bored' ADHD kid when he was little

• always had an interest in learning music, but was directed towards the drums to get his energy out. fortunately it became his passion

• he's best at drums, but he knows how to play A LOT of instruments; guitar, piano, trumpet, marimbas/xylophone, the theramin

• i know 'chaotic gremlin energy' is considered cringy tumblr speak or whatever, but there's no other way for me to describe him as a young man. weed REALLY mellowed him out

• always loved reading and read through all the books in his house multiple times. even the dictionary

• honestly because of he's so well read he has info/trivia/quotes for almost any situation

• refuses to elaborate on what he was doing in a metronome factory in the first place

• he loves most genres of literature and fiction, though never really got into poetry

• just one of those people who's naturally good with kids. at family gatherings and stuff the kids just gravitate towards him

• because of that and working in the library for so long, he's the most up to date with what's cool with the kids these days. he's still considered Uncool though

• keeps in regular contact with his sister and Nana, calling them at least once a week but often more. not as close with his mom but they're friendly and talk when they run into each other.

The Jack White Connection

In January 2015, Elvis’ very first recording, an unassuming simple acetate dating back to 1953, was sold at an auction to an undisclosed buyer for $300,000. It featured two sentimental ballads sung by Elvis, then a shy 18-year-old kid with a ducktail haircut: on the A-side was “My Happiness”, a tune from the 1940s that would be later made famous by Connie Francis, and on the flip side “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin”, which Elvis would later re-record and release as a B-side to “All Shook Up”. Back in 1953, Elvis had paid $3.98 for this service offered by Sam Phillips at Memphis Recording Service, either to hear how he sounded on record, or as a present for his mum, as he would later claim in interviews. Some would go so far as to say that he hoped Sam would hear his voice and sign him up at Sun Studios. Whatever the reason, Elvis took the record to his high-school friend Ed Leek, who, in his recollection, had given him the money ($3.98 amount to about $45 adjusted for inflation) and owned a record player. Elvis played the songs there, and then for some reason left the record at his house. It’s funny how in later years some articles would claim that Gladys played the record over and over, while Elvis admitted in the Million Dollar Quartet recordings that he had lost it. In 1988 Ed Leek let RCA transfer the songs to digital to be released, but he kept the original acetate until his death in 2010.

In March 2015, a couple of months after the record was sold at an auction by Leek’s niece, it was disclosed that the buyer was a fellow rock ‘n roll musican, Jack White. The Detroit native planned to reissue the precious artifact on vinyl in a limited edition for Record Store Day. For this, he faithfully recreated the 10-inch, 78-rpm record in every detail, including the yellowish aging paper of the plain sleeve and the typewritten labels. Alan Stoker, the son of Gordon Stoker from the Jordanaires, the background singers in many of Elvis’ hits, did the transfer at the Country Music Hall of Fame. He ensured that the sound would be as clean as possible while maintaining the old haunting feeling of what many consider to be the Holy Grail of rock ‘n roll.

From this, you may have gathered that Jack White, who has won 13 Grammies in his career and is credited for writing the most distinctive guitar riff of the early 2000s with “Seven Nation Army”, is an Elvis fan. Not only did he embark in the project of bringing Elvis’ first record to the public with a precise replica, but he also played Elvis in a cameo for the comedy “Walk Hard: the Dewey Cox Story” (2007), which is a parody of music biopics. In the now iconic scene, Dewey, played by John C. Reilly, is terrified because he has to go on stage after Elvis, who’s hungry and wants to get out of there early. When Elvis approaches Dewey Cox, he speaks in an unintelligible Southern drawl, and anachronistically attempts a karate chop in the 1950s, before he even started to study it! This is a spoof of music biopics, after all, where these “artistic liberties” are plentiful (Baz Luhrmann’s movie has Elvis sing “Trouble” at Russwood Park, for instance). Then Jack White’s Elvis hilariously explains karate: “It’s called karate, man. Only two kinds of people know it, The Chinese and The King.” This unflattering and stereotyped portrayal of Elvis purposefully misses everything about Elvis’ personality, especially his humility and his Southern accent, focusing on some unimportant stereotypes instead: the sweating, the love of junk food, and the mumbling.

But, aside from playing him in a now famous gag, Jack White payed homage to Elvis as a musician as well. His 2014 Grammy-winning single “Lazaretto” features a cover of “Power of My Love” on the B side. The single holds the record of being the world’s fastest released record. It was recorded live in Nashville in front of an audience, pressed and released in under 4 hours. The B-side is according to The Tennessean “a thunderous version of Elvis Presley's ‘Power of My Love,’ — a faithful rendition, aside from cranking up the tempo and piling on the guitar overdrive.” In 2022, as we know, he had the honor of recording a duet of the same song alongside Elvis’ voice. The song is featured in the soundtrack of Baz Luhrmann’s movie.

And finally, Jack speaks about his love for Elvis Presley in a 2018 episode of the podcast “Revisionist History” by Malcolm Gladwell. In an episode called “Analysis, Parapraxis, Elvis”, the author tries to understand why Elvis never seemed to get a particular part of “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” quite right. Jack, accompanied by his guitar, sings the song in full, including the slightly corny spoken bridge where the singer feels vulnerable, deceived and rejected, which is the emotional part that Elvis couldn’t face to sing. He says there are a lot of minor chords in the song that can get you in that melancholy vibe. The singer is lonesome and he doesn’t really care if his ex lover is lonesome: “it’s a McGuffin to pretend he’s worried about her”, Jack explains.

I’m sure there will be more occasions to hear Jack White paying homage to his idol in the future. After all, he has an Elvis shrine at home, as Gladwell reveals!

Hello, and welcome one more time to: HC of the day, with me, Toga.

Except that this time isn't a HC, is an AU.

So, in this AU/HC if you close your eyes a little, Damian Desmond is a pianist.

Damian Desmond, son of Donovan Desmond, a great musican, studies on Eden, the most prestigious music school in the country, when only the best of the best can enter. He is part of the orchest of Eden with his friends and Becky.

Damian is a pianist, Becky play the violin, Ewen the cello, and Emile play the trumpet. But you may ask "but wait Toga, where is Anya?"

Weeeell.

Anya is a drummer, and she wants to enter on Eden since she has six since her uncle show her the path of the music and the arts. But she also plays in a band with Bill the bass guitarist (who is in Eden) and Ken, the vocalist and guitarist.

So, Anya decide to try every year to enter, until finally she enter thanks to Bill, who spoke for her with míster Henderson. Henderson gives her an opportunity since she is a excelent drummer, and make a deal with her father.

"If Anya doesn't rise her grades while she's at Eden, she's going to have to go back to a normal school"

Anya accept this, and start to play in the orchest too, feeling that clearly nobody wants her there. Becky and her made friends after being under the rain one day waiting for the bus, and since then they become best friends.

Damian can't believe that someone like her (the daughther of some doctor and a florist) could enter on Eden, and one day start an argument with her since Anya plays her drums really hard when he wants to play the piano.

Since then, they started to being a pain in the ass for the other until one day Anya and Damian get trapped in a room without a doorknob.

A Traumadumping later about they fathers, they become friends, and decide to being friends -and maybe something more, because they started to feel attracted to each other-

Bonus:

- Becky fall in love with Ken and Bill one day they play in a bar, and since then, she started to fantasize about them fighting for her because of Berlint In Love.

- Bill, Ken, and Anya know each other since kids, and they started the band since high school until now.

- Ken is the most social of the three, so he hasn't problems since Anya and Bill leave the other school.

- Damian is traumatizing.

- Everyone is repressed in some way (Anya by Loid, Damian by his father and the shadow of his brother, Becky can't have a boyfriend because "she most be perfect", etc)

- Loid love that Anya play in a band, but he his worried about the drugs so he wants to keep her safe, but he doesn't know how say it.

- Damian play cards with Emile, to be clear, poker. He is awesome in that one.

- The Canon Event™ of Becky is that one day Anya blow up bubblegum and ruin her hair, so she know has short hair (Yor cut it for her like she did with Anya)

- The Five of Eden is the band that Emile, Ewen, Becky, Damian and Anya have for the school recitals.

seba's biological mother was a young woman who knew in her bones when she found out she was pregnant that she wasn't ready for the baby. she had no idea who the father was, and still in high school with dreams of continuing on through university, she didn't have the funds or the support system to raise a child, so she made the smart decision to put him into the adoption system. being a young baby, with big eyes and a happy temperament, it wasn't long until he was selected for adoption by a young couple who had been hoping for a baby, but had come to figure that they probably were incapable of having one.

seba's adoptive mother was a prominent mexican scream queen and his adoptive father who was a famous tejano musican who had grown big for his beautiful love songs. it wasn't long after they had taken seba home that their miracle baby, baby luna, was born. young enough not to remember the adoption process and raised in a family that had nothing but love for him, seba grew to know the dominguez herrera family as if they were his biological parents, and he loved baby luna the most. the two siblings were practically inseparable as kids, constantly getting into mischief together.

the family was a big name when they were kids, raised in a community of people who all seemed to know who they were were before they could even walk. growing up, however, their public perception began to shift : their mother, eager to adopt the strangeness that came with her movie roles, had spurred rumours that the family were brujas. seba, raised in an environment that had always been full of year-round halloween decorations, the long, black, sweeping robes his mother would wear and the bizarre hobbies luna would take up never saw anything wrong with the way they were living.

in fact, the criticism placed upon the family confused him. he was unable to determine why the other kids in their classes didn't like the two dominguez herrera children, so most of their snide comments would roll of seba's back. in fact, he had picked up his mother's eccentric charm and father's dreamy personality : and from a young age seba had figured out that putting those two things together gained points in his favour to those around them who were immediately distrusting. he would wear his heart on his sleeve, parading it around to the other students : see, i'm just like you, even as he was showing up to school in exaggerated costumes that would match the ones his mother would wear on screen.

when his parents pulled seba out of school alongside his sibling, moving them away to new york, seba was disappointed. always an extrovert, he found it difficult to stay focused on his home school studies. his attention would always drift elsewhere-- to the plans he would make with ' friends ' outside of his home library walls, or the instruments and unfinished songs that were scattered across his bedroom floor. books and papers and pens were never particularly seba's thing.

looking for ways out of his studies, and not interested in acting classes like luna, seba would spend almost all of his time trailing after his father. he learned the intricacies of music from him: the cultural importance, the history, the ways different instruments could be used to create different impacts. for once, it was something that seemed to catch seba's attention, and he threw himself in full force. he picked up all sorts of instruments, from the accordian to electric synthesizers. like the rest of his family, he was fascinated by sounds, how they interacted with each other, and what he could do with them.

it was around the time seba was fifteen that his parents told him his biological mother wanted to meet him. they respected whatever decision he made and wanted to give him the opportunity to decide for himself. seba agreed, and over the next few years slowly began to develop a relationship with the woman who had birthed him. the dominguez herrera family were his family, and luna was his sibling, but he felt a sense of obligation to the woman who clearly wanted to have a relationship with her biological son. it was difficult to do that, however, while she was still in veracruz and they had moved to new york, so the relationship he formed with her spanned mostly through email and the occasional visit.

seba helped luna and their father produce two albums on latin american folklore and folk music named Musas vol. 1 and 2. while luna was fascinated by the stories they were telling through the music, seba wanted to reflect that in the sounds of the music. it was working on these albums that seba learned the most from his father on how music production worked ; and it was the thing that confirmed for him it was what he wanted to do. the siblings were some of the youngest latin grammy winners, with Musas vol. 2 winning two latin grammys.

after that, seba began working with luna to produce most of her music. together they collaborated on a few different albums ( see: stuff by the marias, specifically superclean vol i and vol ii. ) he also collaborated with some other young artists, slowly helping luna to solidify the dominguez herrera name in the amercian music industry.

growing up somewhat isolated and only surrounded by his loving family, seba was also naive. in a household where his father was consistently writing love songs for his mother, and witnessing the (seemingly) pure love they had for each other, it became something that seba dreamed as the ideal for himself. since he was old enough to understand what relationships were, seba started throwing himself into them with full-force, often times in an intense manner that moved far too fast for the time that he had been within them. he would always end up getting his heart broken, either when his own interest fizzled out or the other person pulled away, and so as he aged, he became incredibly wary of relationships. they became an unattainable ideal as though to keep his fragile heart in check : he liked to chase, to leave handpicked bouquets of flowers on doorsteps or write love songs to play on guitar, but the moment that someone reciprocated that interest he got cold feet and ran.

currently he's working on the early parts of producing a new full-length album with luna ( the marias, cinema ) but she's preoccupied with other things so he's not too committed to it right now.

Anne Wilkes from Misery. Kathy Bates did an amazing job playing her. I first read the story back in high school and I remember thinking, she's fat and she's powerful. You don't bully Kathy Bates you end up in her basement.

"Black Rockstars (Day 3): Prince"

I couldn't do an art challenge involving black rockstars and not include this guy! Even though I've drawn him before, I decided go for a cartoonier look for this one.

About a good fraction of my music collection includes tons of Prince albums. Dude was extremely versatile, a talented multi instrumentalist, and a musican that could not be pigeonholed. He along with Hendrix were some of the main go to artists I listened to when I started listening to rock music in high school.

Unfortunately I have never gotten a chance to see him. Had I known him playing in my hometown would be one of his last shows, I definitely would have a gone. But, we'll always have his music to revisit.
