The Great High Republic Bar Brawl Round 1: Match 1
Avar Kriss VS Phan-Tu Zenn
In one corner, we have the Marshall of Starlight Beacon herself, the Hero of Hetzal…Avar Kriss!
Tumblr media
VS
The prince of Eiram, one of the two unifiers of Eiram and E'ronoh. He may be more of a lover than a fighter, but he’s pretty handy with a blaster when he needs to be…Phan-Tu Zenn!

God I’m just thinking. And ugh, the Jedi’s martial arts must have been amazing. They had seven distinct styles, passed down over a thousand generations, by uncountable lineages.
Every lineage must have had their own katas, their own training methods and distinct variations on the forms. There were probably inter-lineage feuds on what type of sparring they taught, variations on specific katas, which techniques were acceptable in sparring, anything. You KNOW those High Republic Outpost Jedi must have created new styles that were gradually subsumed into the 7 forms.
What would a Jedi Tournament have looked like? Were there ones for specific forms, like Soresu-only competitions? Did they have some kind of point sparring? Was there an endurance/blocking division? How would they have measured Force abilities in a tournament setting? How did they score?
In conclusion, SHOW ME THE SECRET JEDI MARTIAL ARTS LORE LUCASFILM

The new book Rise And Fall of the Galactic Empire, which is an in-universe history book, provides some lore that I think provides very interesting background context to that Tay'lor Spiff post. (I know there's a Republic era pop-star that was a Taylor Swift easter egg in the last issue of the Jango Fett comic series, but the fact she's a Twi'lek makes me feel like she can't be a full Taylor Swift expy- because she wouldn't be a part of the dominant racial group.)
Set alongside the SAGroup was the Coalition for Progress, which in many ways fulfilled similar roles and responsibilities relating to the adult population of the galaxy. Initially one of the smallest groups within COMPNOR, Progress—as the name was often shortened to—was sometimes greeted with a degree of trepidation by Imperial citizens and planetary governors. Much of this stemmed from the actions of the group within Progress designated to deal with art and culture. Progress created a very narrow definition regarding acceptable art, music, or performances that could be held or showcased in public. The result was a funding collapse in artistic pursuits and the blacklisting of some extremely high-profile artists, performers, and musicians who fell afoul of the new regulations. This included some of the leading gonk-rock groups of Bormea sector, who regularly had their venues closed or raided, and the overtly anti-Imperial band Red Shift Limit. Furthermore a musician from Naboo named Palo Jemabie was imprisoned at a labor camp by the Empire for a musical performance described—without detail—by his criminal record as “deviant.” This situation was particularly complicated as various planetary governors had previously been patrons and supporters of those who were now banned and could no longer enjoy their work.
[...]
The SAGRecreation group in particular was highly adept at identifying potential role models within various spheres of sport and culture who might appeal to younger citizens. Grav-ball already had an existing widespread appeal in the galaxy, but the Empire took the extra step of incorporating it into various military academies and recruiting some of its most famous stars as examples of what both physical prowess and loyalty to the Empire could mean. Broadcasts of grav-ball tournaments on the holonet were often accompanied by recruitment messages that featured popular players, and Grand Moff Tarkin was sometimes seen in the crowd for games that took place on Coruscant, though it remains unclear whether he actually had any interest in the sport.
This is clearly inspired by how sports and the arts were treated within real life fascist regimes- grav ball is space American football, there's an entire middle grade book about that. Given the position the kind of country pop Taylor Swift makes in our current cultural hegemony- the Empire isn't considering it "degenerate music". So Spiffies (specifically young people from wealthy Core families who'd be the only ones able to get away with posting stuff like that on the Holonet) insistence that Tay'lor is actual a force sensitive rebel sympathizer is even more ridiculous, when her boyfriend is actually part of Imperial propaganda. However at the same time I feel like there does have to be some poor ISB agent who has to check all of Spiff's lyrics to make sure there aren't actually secret messages like some of her fans claim.

the number one most interesting analysis anyone ever made about the legend of korra is that the benders in republic city were clearly an oppressed and exploited population. NOT the non-benders. and therefore the equalists are nothing more than essentially a nazi party or kkk or other hate group that likes to masquerade itself as the victims to a scapegoat minority that is somehow a danger to normal people in order to oppress and eradicate them.
the most compelling evidence that benders actually represent and function as marginalized people is that they occupy characteristic marginalized roles in society. organized crime, factory laborers, pro-sports, music and film entertainment. (ESPECIALLY the more physically taxing high impact sports such as boxing and football!! the fighting ring nature of pro-bending absolutely reflects this. this is no golf tournament). with those roles that offer any hope of upward mobility being limited to only a few and as inherently exploited by producers as it is. or otherwise abject poverty in city slums.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
non benders such as Mr. Sato own large successful corporations. benders do labor for him. benders do cheap manual labor for low pay in the early 20th century steampunk metaphor city and live in slums. while the ruling class non-bender turned out to be a raging bigot funding the equalist "movement"
Tumblr media
so when korra yells at the equalist cunt doing a little infowars rant in the park and tells him to "shut up" and "im not oppressing you!! you're oppressing yourself" and everyone got mad at her for on tumblr being a bigot you were all wrong she was out there tearing down the zionist missing person propoganda posters before i even knew what the IDF stood for she was the fucking legend forever

What I think the casualty characters feel about football
Since casualty is not on tonight, here’s what I headcanon the characters feel about football because I have THOUGHTS!!!
Ian
Proper footie fan.
Absolutely loves football.
Feel like he supports Sheffield Wednesday and has a season ticket, even if he can’t go to many games because of work.
Will try and travel to Sheffield to see them at home.
Always makes sure to catch up on results and watch bits of the matches whilst at work.
Loves the England national team.
Absolutely singing Sweet Caroline and Mr Brightside all night long.
Tries to like the women’s teams but just doesn’t have the same passion for it as he does the men’s.
Will absolutely slander someone if they slagged off the women’s game though.
Prefers women’s national football to women’s club football.
Tries to play FIFA but struggles…a lot.
Jan
Supports the men and women’s Welsh national team and that’s it.
Does not care for any other football.
Loves Gareth Bale and owns a Welsh shirt with his name on.
Started crying when Wales made the semi-finals of the Euros in 2016.
She came into work the next day hungover for the first and only time.
Hates Ronaldo.
Teddy
A Manchester United fan.
Cried when Sir Alex Ferguson left.
Football massively affects his mood.
If his team does badly in a match (very common with Man Utd) you will hear about it from him.
He will spend the next day arguing about it with whoever (more like ranting).
Alternatively, if his team does well, he will be on a high all day.
Started watching women’s football when the Manchester United Women’s team was created.
He grew to love them just as much as the men’s team.
He supports the men and women’s Welsh and England national teams but prefers the Welsh teams.
Loves talking about the Wales teams with Jan.
They both sing the Welsh national anthem together whenever Wales are playing in a major tournament.
Prefers the women’s England team over the men’s England team.
Has fantasy premier league. He tried to teach Ian about it but his old ass did not get it.
Plays FIFA and football manager games.
Has a bunch of obscure football games on his phone that he plays when he is bored.
Jacob
Casual football fan.
Supports both men and women’s Chelsea.
Cares less for national football.
Doesn’t get heavily invested, so if his team fumbles something he doesn’t get majorly upset.
Likes to play fantasy premier league after Teddy taught him about it.
Plays FIFA.
Dylan
Does not care for football.
Will drop random obscure football facts casually in conversations when football is being discussed.
Likes to weigh in on VAR decisions.
Probably really good at football manager games.
Hates England fans.
Stevie
Does not care for football.
However, she does make a point to say she supports BOTH the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland because she believes in Irish reunification.
This usually leads onto a long speech about the Irish political landscape.
Will deck someone if they start slagging off the women’s game.
Gets irrationally annoyed when Americans call it ‘soccer.’
Faith
Hates football with a passion.
Loves to absolutely shit on Scottish fans when they get their hopes up and said hopes are inevitably and quickly destroyed.
Is more lenient with the women’s game but still hates it with a passion.
Always, without fail, asks why the women’s shorts are so short whenever women’s football is on or being discussed.
Her kids made her play FIFA once and she ended up scoring five own goals in one match.
Calls football ‘soccer’ to annoy Stevie.
Siobhan
Actually a massive football fan, both men and women’s.
She tries to downplay her interest, but when somebody is watching football with her, it becomes apparent to them that she is not a casual fan.
She’ll scream, cry, shout, chant, throw things, swear etc.
She’s an absolute menace.
Will deny her passion for football if you confront her about it.
Jamie
Does not know or care much for football.
He tries to support England in major tournaments for social sake.
When England lost to Italy in the Euros final he made the mistake of saying to a group of hardcore England fans in the pub that it’s “only a game, lads!” and “There’s always the next one!”
He had to run for his life that day.
Cam
Does not like football.
May engage in Euros and World Cup talk around others for social sake.
Avoids pubs when games are on.
Hates how loud England fans are.
Hates how vulgar some of the chants are.
Jodie
Likes football.
Doesn’t watch much but enjoys it when it’s on.
Doesn’t support a particular club.
Generally watches whatever is relevant e.g. big competitions or title decider matches.
Played FIFA once and was pretty good at it.
Rash
A casual fan.
Supports (women’s and men’s) Arsenal.
Supports the UK national teams in major tournaments, but doesn’t care much for national football.
Doesn’t celebrate loudly when his team scores, he either nods his head or claps.
Tariq
A bigger fan than Rash.
Supports Arsenal too and is a massive England fan.
Like Ian, he is chanting Sweet Caroline all night long.
He loves the social side of football AKA having a pint in the pub and screaming at the TV.
He’ll watch the women’s game but he doesn’t go out of his way to watch it.
Definitely plays Fantasy Premier League and is quite good at it.
Plays FIFA and is awful at it, despite pretending he is not.
Shouts “suiii” sporadically in random everyday situations.
Rida
Loves football.
Feel like she supports West Ham and all the UK national teams.
Gets really passionate about both club and national football.
Loves chanting random shite and heatedly debating.
Will say things like “______ washed,” “Pessi,” “Penaldo,” “oil club” etc.
Gossips about football player drama like it’s a soap, especially with Jodie and Rash.
Prefers the women’s game to the men’s.
Always gets into arguments with Tariq over football.
Bullied him mercilessly when Arsenal bottled the title two years in a row.
Plays FIFA and is amazing at it. Always destroys Tariq on it.
Nicole
Die-hard Newcastle United fan.
Has a season ticket even if she can’t attend a lot of the matches because of work.
Usually games she does attend are when NUFC are away in the south because they’re easier to get to.
Tries to watch all their matches.
Is loud as fuck when watching football.
Loves chanting complete bollocks.
Prefers the men’s team to the women’s team, but only because the reason she is so passionate about NUFC is because of her upbringing.
She still loves the women’s team.
Argues the politics of football often, talking about money’s influence in the game.
Hates Manchester City with a burning passion, even more so than Manchester United.
When she met Ngozi, she started getting an increased interest in local football like her.
Watches major (men and women’s) national tournaments, but does not care much for the England team.
Ngozi
Loves football, with an emphasis on the unity it can bring.
Prefers local level football over big club football because she believes it’s more authentic (believes money ruins football).
Watches the (men and women’s) Nigerian leagues and England leagues.
Doesn’t really support one team.
She likes the Premier League, but she prefers the lower leagues like the National League, Sky Bet League Two etc.
Watches all the playoff games.
Feel like she likes obscure, smaller leagues in different countries as well.
Loves Afcon.
Supports men and women’s Nigerian team, but she loves Afcon more as a whole.
When she moved to the UK, she got more into the Euros.
Heavily dislikes the men’s England national team fanbase.
Loves watching the devolved nations and the Republic of Ireland.
Hates France.
She started supporting Newcastle United more because of Nicole.
Both like going to the men and women’s matches together when they can.
Is a bit disturbed when Nicole starts joining in bizarre chanting and often has to ask what half the words mean.
Watching Nigeria teams makes her a little sad now because she misses it, but she loves talking about the teams and Afcon as a whole with people, especially Nicole.

i know that only like 2 other people on this webbed site care about womens volleyball but what is everyones thoughts on vnl so far and olympic predictions 👀
i think china, italy, and japan are gonna qualify through vnls for the olympics. i cant make my mind up between canada and netherlands for the fourth spot, on the one hand canada is ranked slightly higher rn and have played the best ive seen them but also the netherlands match against china was really impressive
i think vnl quarterfinals is gonna be:
thailand - hosting so automatic qualification, theyre my fav team and im happy they get to host the final round but i dont think my girlies are gonna make it past quarterfinals, at least not this year (though their win against dominican republic was great AND they took a set from the usa even if their loss to korea was frustrating, something happened between weeks 1 and 2 and they came out stronger because of it also my girl wipawee is proving me right that this is her year)
brasil - currently ranked 1 and their bench and starters have been lethal. gabi is solid as always nyeme has been making so many great saves. also i love the way the crowds erupt when thaisa comes on court i never get tired of it. i think they can make it to finals if not taking gold
usa - i know they havent been dominating but they seem to still be testing out their younger players, like washington/drews/hancock all havent even played yet- drews aint even on the roster and shes usually a go to player for them. their loss to china sure was something and they lost to brasil for the first time in like 5 years but their week 1 team wasn't their strongest and we knew this, it certainly gave newer players/ their bench some good experiance. excited to see how they match up with poland and turkiye later this week.
poland - lavarini has been great for them also they have wołosz back and stysiak is a monster and i thought genuinely they had a great chance of making it to finals last year if texas ac hadnt sabotoged them
italy - (now that egonu an sylla are back) for sure they can do it also antrapova in their pocket is great and in general despite the stumbling last year their team is doing well this tournament like their win againt turikye was great and that was with their week 1 squad
turkiye - won last year and are in a great position having both karakurt and vargas- (i like their odds better when they use them as subs for eachother more than having karakurt play outside but santarelli obviously knows much much more than me lol) they havent swept as much as i thought they would but they are human. and if they are on their game then theyre unstoppable but 3-1 loss to italy and 3-2 to japan took me by surprise. still would never count them out theyre obviously making it through. excited to see their game against serbia tn
china - silver metalists from last vnl. yall know i love yuan xin yue and want to see her play but also wang yuan yuan has been great this week also zhu ting is back on the roster!!!!!!! as im writing this their ranked 4 so i have a good feeling about them
for the last team idk but it could be:
japan - put some respect on kogas name!! girlie has been fantastic this tournement and winning against turkiye is huge imo and theyre game against brasil was amazing even if they didnt win they fought hard those 5 sets. genuinely i think japan is more primed to win the mental battle of the game i have such high hopes for them
canada - if they can get back to their week 1 play style i wouldnt count them out even tho its unlikely
serbia - usually is an easy prediciton but theyre right now behind korea in the rankings.... but they dont have boscovic back and their squad seems to be pretty young and they fight hard so it can still be them
dominican republic - though they haven't been winning a ton so far they are one of my ult teams i love them dearly and i hope castillo joins them again soon cause she is my favorite libero
i dont really have thoughts on olympics as of now except for my qualification predictions
hoping a single other person wants to talk about this!!
