I wrote my first ever Hiei & Yukina fic; I've never written Yukina at all before, so tackling her POV was an interesting challenge. And a challenge it certainly fucking was, but I think it paid off!

Airi’s POV

Eating while she walked, she let her mind detect Hiei’s energy. Even without it, she could have guessed he’d fled to the woods. She found him astride a low, thick branch of an old elm tree, reclined against its trunk. Setting her bowl down, she pulled herself up and climbed to him. His hands offered their support as she maneuvered herself, and she sat opposite him, her legs thrown over his thighs. Their feet dangled together, and she leaned forward to hug him.

Wanting to talk, but sensing that he did not, she reigned in her questions. By now, she knew him well enough to understand that he would say something when he was ready. His body was stiff with tension, and she collected bits of energy from the tree to ease it for him. He sighed and relaxed in her arms.

Sweet boy. You’re safe.

“I need to leave.”

Slowly, she lifted her head, afraid to look at him.

“I can’t be here with her.”

Her mind raced, trying to find the right words. She could not ask him to stay just for her. If her entire history hadn’t just begun to unravel before her eyes, and if those kids locked away in the facilities didn’t need her, she would have followed him to the ends of the earth. Her heart, however, would forever fall short of the needs of others. How did they always end up in this place?

It was past time they stop running away when things got hard.

“What would happen if you tried?” she finally asked.

“If she figures it out, and Shigure hears, he’ll kill her. You have no idea, the kinds of enemies I’ve made, Airi. She would be in constant danger. It’s bad enough that I’ve put you at risk. She’s not as strong as you.”

“How do you know?”

The leaves above rustled in the wind, and the moonlight that filtered through danced across his face.

“I was helpless when you met me. You assumed I was weak, too. I think it’s time,” she said, pausing, unsure if this route would end in disaster. “That you stop underestimating the people who care about you.”

“She does not even know me,” he said, shoulders drooping low.

“But she could, if you’d let her.”

His eyes searched hers for the answer. He wanted to know his sister more than anything. She was the only tie he had to the life that might have been his, once. The only chance he’d ever had at being loved. He deserved this.

“It’s too dangerous. What little she would gain from me being in her life could not outweigh the risks.”

“You’re wrong. Besides, you’re not the only one looking out for her anymore.”

At that, he sucked in a deep breath.

“I would never let anything happen to her. She’s a part of you, Hiei, whether you want to accept that or not.”

His hand on the back of her head surprised her, pulling her to him as two stray tears spilled down her cheeks. The kiss, filled with gratitude, made her dizzy. When he let her go, he shook his head.

“I still do not know what to do.”

“You stay,” she said, placing her hands on either side of his face. “And you get to know her… be her friend. She doesn’t need to find out the truth.”

“Her friend?”

She smiled - a wide, warm smile. Her thumb brushed against his cheek.

“You were mine, once.”

“Hn.”

“Why don’t you come back inside? Everyone’s together.”

After a long, terrifying moment, he nodded.

Really enjoyed the YYH live action as kind of a companion/adjacent piece to the original. But it really got me back in the yyh mood and I needed to draw a kind of after series of everyone at Yuusuke and Keiko's ramen stand

I updated the post a bit and added additional info. Also I want to tag it with their character names so I'm reblogging to add those so they don't go in the tumblr character tags.

Botan is her backup singer

Kazuma is on drums

Kurama volunteers for bass

(changed my mind because between Yomi and College and Work he has limited time to learn)

Hiei is playing guitar

(so he's the one absolutely shredding which is cathartic for both of them to an extent actually)

But!!! It's sort of a non-romantic Fleetwood Mac situation because he's been practicing with just the guys and Yusuke who has been the lead singer so far and was singing completely different lyrics so far.

They bait and switch and Yukina and Botan step up to the mics and Yusuke steps to the side with a camera.

And as Hiei hears the song he knows that it's about them- but he's not about to humiliate Yukina by running offstage.

So he plays this song about how he's been breaking his sister's heart with his lies and distance with all of his skill and precision to Absolute Perfection and he has to face the hurt he's caused her head on while he does so.

He's going to KILL (not really) The Oaf and The Detective when this concert set list is over.

Shizuru is recording from the audience.

Koenma is also recording with his security footage from multiple angles.

The footage is spliced later to make an awesome truly professional looking music video for the band! I imagine that they make a bit of money off it as a side hustle for Yukina before she starts her detective work.

I'm still playing with the timeline for the AU and I think maybe Yukina getting rejected BEFORE she trains would be good actually. It would motivate her and also sort of fits this song and I'm impulsive so sue me.

But who's to say that she really leaves her feelings behind? She could hold onto them despite it all. Waiting for Yusuke to inevitably fuck up and run in when she has the chance.

Can't sleep

Can't stop thinking of this as a Yukina song.

I know it's like draft 3 of the same song on the Tarja Breakup Album but like.

I just think it's very Yukina.

Anyway. It'd be pretty good for the STBAU since the Yukieko is one-sided.

Idk I just think she'd get in in her feelings about it and you know Kazuma was taking her to Megallica concerts. Who's to say Eveningwish didn't open for them once or twice and inspire Yukina to try her hand in a band or at least karaoke with her own made up lyrics?

To clarify the song is about ALL of the ways that her heart has been breaking and Hiei is The Main Reason she's been hurting. It's just that the rejection from Keiko compounds that. And she's Reflecting on it and Singing about it.

Yu Yu Hakusho 30th Anniversary Commemorative Illustrations

The redraw in anime style of all the 15 covers from the Yu Yu Hakusho kanzenban edition (2004-2005) is over! Hirotaka Marufuji, chief animation director of the Yu Yu Hakusho OVAs (2018), was in charge of the illustrations.

This project began with the release of a 30th Anniversary logo, on June 3rd, 2022, and ended on October 10th, 2023, the day of Yu Yu Hakusho anime 31st anniversary. Many commemorative goods and action figures have been released so far.

I hope to see more surprises and Yu Yu Hakusho content in future!
