I just had the most amazing dream dealing with Hiei and I'm sad I had to wake up.
Like, it was pure domestic fluff.
Hiei and his mate (it was like an OC) were living in an old warehouse converted into an actual home, and IDK why but Hiei kept feeding stray cats. So there were a LOT of cats.
For some reason they were also foster parents???? Hiei was the dad with dark humor, while his mate was the mom with sassy and snarky humor.
All the older kids flocked to Hiei like moths to a flame, mainly the ones that had issues, cause Hiei would train them to defend themselves and give them an outlet.
His mate took care of a lot of the younger kids and infant(s) while teasing Hiei.
Everyone liked the stray cats that flocked to the warehouse.
It was just so weird and domestic but I loved it.
Hiei and his mate were also trying for a kid of their own when they had no foster kids, cause his mate really didn't like having an empty nest.
My damn phone woke me up just as Hiei decided to let her ride him. Like, phone, why did you have to wake me up during such a hot ass dream???? It was getting to the good part ffs!!!

Chapter 20 of the edited version of Future Talk is available now.
In spite of how long it took me to edit this and what that length of time may imply, this chapter was not as difficult to edit as the previous. I just didn't have much free time this month to spend on the story.
Hoping to get chapters out closer to weekly, but we shall see.
Thank you for reading, and special thanks to those leaving comments on the new installments.

A Game of Chance- Chapter One
CW: Slavery, light master/slave relationship, gambling, PTSD, hybrids, mating, marking, biting, blood, pain, torture, violence, original fem character, oc x Hiei ----
Chapter One: High Stakes The room smelled of humans and their vices. Alcohol, smoke, and different perfumes permeated the air in a disgusting cloud. Hiei wanted to leave more than anything in that moment. He felt claustrophobic and honestly the stench of mortality was making him nauseous. He wrinkled his nose in disdain and once again, for what was probably well passed double digits, contemplated leaving the others and dropping out of this little errand. Instead, he forced the roiling of his stomach to the back of his mind, narrowed his eyes, and shoved his hands deep into his pockets. He continued to follow behind the fox and the detective with a dark scowl, staring so hard at their backs he hoped their jackets would burst into flames. “Hey,” Yusuke hissed over his shoulder. “We gotta get into that dice game. That’s where the deals are taking place from what Koenma says.” “Hn,” Hiei grunted in noncommittal agreement. They didn’t exactly know what the ‘deals’ were, Koenma hadn’t revealed everything, but Hiei had a sneaking suspicion that not even he knew all the details. Which was poor taste for the ruler of Spirit World. He was distracted by the brightly popping lights, the jingling of change, and the sounds of calling scores. Mechanical noises rocketed from a far-off section of the room and his eye was twitching in time with the insistent annoyance. Humans were so obnoxious, why would they build something like this to begin with? “Yes, so it seems,” Kurama said, glancing over the gambling tables and choosing his game of choice. “I’ll take the blackjack table.” Hiei focused gratefully on the shallow conversation at hand, hopeful to get away from the idiotic interruptions surrounding him. “Alright, guess I’ll take roulette game, Kuwabara’s got the pachinko,” Yusuke glanced over at the black-haired demon and grinned widely. “You’ll fit right in at the poker table, short stuff.” Hiei pursed his lips and turned his glare onto the spirit detective. Gambling was not commonplace in Japan, let alone in casinos like this, that’s why this was somewhat of an underground operation led by a group of demons and humans who had gotten too big for their britches. Hiei had learned to play the human games provided in these establishments for this mission alone. He felt like it was going overboard at the time, but perhaps it had been an intelligent decision after all. He mused silently to himself as he stalked over to the poker table. He’d learned he was rather good at the game, mostly because he had minimal tells and his facial expressions were easy to control. He just needed to win enough to garner the attention of the people who held the game in the back room. The hours passed in a blur of winning streaks, unhappy faces, and annoyance for Hiei. He was somewhere above his tenth game, and honestly his desire to leave was becoming hard to ignore. His skin itching for the brush of fresh air. Hiei’s entire body ticked when a hand landed on his shoulder and he had to stop himself from snapping, he wanted to be invited, so he had to appear… approachable. His face twisted for half a second at the thought. “Sir, would you like to come to a different room, for a very special and different game?” a human woman stood behind him and bowed deeply. “Tsk,” Hiei clicked his tongue, standing and placing his cards on the table without a look back. “Yes, that sounds much more interesting.” ---- The darkness was cool against her skin and yet suffocating like a sheet of ice that was crawling into her lungs. She had come to know this place well though and she relished the calm that came with it. When she was drawn into the world of humanity everything was too bright, too loud, too harsh, it had become a torture chamber for her. The only reason she ever was drawn into it anyway was because of the games or for the experiments, she was used as a bargaining chip most of the time, but since her second form had been discovered she was often used in the fighting ring. It didn’t take long for her to feel it though, she wasn’t sure how long it had last been since when the last snag on her spirit had caught her, but she was certain she hadn’t had more than a few days of rest. It was painful, just like every other time. Invisible hooks sank into her skin and yanked her from the shadows of her prison, pulling her into the world of too much, the place that assaulted her senses. The crushing pressure of dimensional travel was always exhausting, making her soul feel drained and compressed. Her current master stood next to her, his hand moving in a sweeping toward her as he addressed a short demon with black spiky hair with white highlights and blue tips, and eyes that reminded her of garnets. “This will be my wager,” he said, his eyes glittering. “What do you have to put against it?” The quills along her back rattled, making a sound like tapping porcelain as she observed the apparition before her. He looked bored, maybe smug, and it caused her lips to pull back from her teeth, revealing a vicious snarl. Her ears flicking down again her head as she lowered it and hunched her shoulders. All she felt was anger, frustration, and claustrophobia. She wanted freedom, she wanted to be released from the constant torment of being passed around, of being used. There was a restlessness in her bones and she ached to run, but she was bound to her master, to that little plastic circle and she hated it with a burning passion she didn’t know herself capable of. ---- He felt like his eyes were going to bleed, the color scheme of the room must have been picked out by a blind toddler. Who the fuck paired this color of green with gold and silver accents and then red? Hiei didn’t know anything about decoration, but he knew beauty, and this was the farthest thing from it. At least the playing tables were nice choice of wood, a gleaming cherry with red highlights through the deep brown. He huffed, he just needed to make it through this inane step. He just needed to gather his prize and escape to the others. Then he could go back to the crisp, cool air of outside. That was his real reward. Hiei watched the man he was up against summon something from the golden poker chip he had pulled out of his suit jacket. It was a demon unlike any other he had seen. A huge wolf-shaped creature with russet fur, golden eyes, a slightly shorter snout that a real wolf, and longer and more pointed ears. Its paws were huge with claws the size of daggers, canines so long that they couldn’t be completely hidden by its lips, and large hollow quills that seemed to be able to moved independently along it’s shoulders and spine. It was a strange creature and almost looked like a mix of two demons or maybe three. It seemed hostile too, not just to him but also, it’s supposed master. He shrugged, “I will offer my own soul.” His eyes were nonchalant, hands still resting at home in his pockets while he watched his opponent. He knew that wagering his own freedom was probably not the smartest idea in a game that relied completely on luck. But he had nothing else worth the same amount as the demon in front of him, and Hiei had never been one to back away from a challenge just because of the odds. He was handed a set of dice, and he weighed the hard plastic in his hand, his nerves flashing in his mind for a heartbeat before he shoved it away with mental snarl. There was no time for fear, he'd already taken up the challenge. The beast across from him rattled again, a guttural growl roiling from its chest with a resonance that filled Hiei’s chest causing his ribs to tremble. He fixed the creature with a critical eye it seemed this demon may be stronger than he originally thought. Yet its energy was at a resting level and all he knew was that it was not just a simple lower class. The man across from him threw his dice, it landed on two and five. Not bad, the aim was to get sevens, evens, and doubles; avoiding snake eyes and odds that didn’t equate to seven at all costs. Hiei glanced over his shoulder at the door, it seemed as if the others weren’t having any luck in getting into the room, so he was the one who needed to get a chip. Hiei sighed and dropped the dice with a lazy roll of his wrist. They seemed to clatter across the table in slow motion, the tension in his muscles once again mounting as his eyes narrowed on the two black cubes. “Double fours!” the floor man called. “First roll goes to our visitor.” The mortal across from him, clenched his jaw but nodded his head, “Nice roll.” “Just luck,” Hiei said, shortly. One couldn’t have skill at a game that relied on chance. Hiei couldn’t comprehend why people were so obsessed with these competitions, these games where there was no way to improve or increase one’s own prowess. The next roll the mortal in front of him managed to land made the wolfen creature at his side stiffen. “Double sixes!” the voice rang out. Hiei’s eyes narrowed minutely in annoyance. He exhaled sharply through his nose, as his fist clenched at his thigh. There was only one thing better than that and he’d be lucky if he hit it. His eyes landed on the honey gold irises of the wolf, it was large, it’s shoulder would hit the top of Hiei’s head. There was an intelligence, an understanding deep in the depths of it’s feral gaze. And perhaps, an expectance. It was almost as if this beast was hoping for something from him. With a frown he looked down at his fist closed tightly around the dice that held his fate. This entire situation was ridiculous, with something he couldn’t even predict he could become imprisoned, or he could have something that could possibly break this case wide open. He sighed and dropped the dice to the table. “Double threes! Sir Kata takes this roll, one left,” the caller yelled. Hiei grumbled at his poor luck, and the man across from him preened. A growl answered the fire apparition and once again his ribs shook, his spine shuddering this time as well. He fixed his narrowed eyes onto the wolf and its quills rattled in what seemed to be irritation as it shifted restlessly. The mortal rolled again. “Eight!” The man’s face twitched and Hiei smirked, unable to stop his confidence from flaring. Yet when he got handed the dice, they felt heavier, and it felt as if his hand were connected by an invisible cable to the floor. It was just so clear to his mind that this was the last roll he would receive. That though fortune was on his side this time, he had no skills that would make this happen. That all it took was one extra flip or one less and he would lose his freedom. Hiei was ashamed to admit his breathing quickened and sweat gathered along his forehead under his headband. As his wrist loosened and fingers extended, he watched the dice fall from his hand with bated breath. The dice rolling across the table suddenly seemed far too loud in his ears and oxygen suddenly seemed like a luxury he couldn’t afford in this ritzy place. He wanted out of here, he wanted outside in the fresh air, preferably high in a tree where he could observe but be hidden from prying eyes. “Double twos! Winner is the challenger!” the caller rose his hand to Hiei. The air was flooding back into his lungs with a painful punch, and his flush of anxiety seemed foolish. There was a hesitant whine as Hiei didn’t move but stared at the dice that had decided favorably for him. “Here,” the man in front of the fire apparition said, his smile plastic and anything but friendly. He held out the golden chip, the tiny circle that had summoned demon which looked at Hiei with a suspicious shimmer to its molten eyes. “I’m sure we will play again, and I will win it back,” he said. “It’s been very useful to me after all, and I would hate to lose my favorite subject.” Hiei grunted, his brow rising minutely at the human’s use of words as he stepped up to snatch the token from the man’s hand. “Fool, I have what I need,” Hiei said with no further explanation and no longer any desire to play nice. He turned to his prize and there was a sharpness to it’s gaze even though there was also, what Hiei thought, to be gratitude too. The beast answered Hiei’s bait of energy eagerly returning to the poker chip with little fuss, and he left without a word. He needed to meet the others. This game was stranger and more dangerous than they had expected and perhaps they needed to be more prepared for next time.

Tender moments // Yukina arrives
Airi’s POV
Eating while she walked, she let her mind detect Hiei’s energy. Even without it, she could have guessed he’d fled to the woods. She found him astride a low, thick branch of an old elm tree, reclined against its trunk. Setting her bowl down, she pulled herself up and climbed to him. His hands offered their support as she maneuvered herself, and she sat opposite him, her legs thrown over his thighs. Their feet dangled together, and she leaned forward to hug him.
Wanting to talk, but sensing that he did not, she reigned in her questions. By now, she knew him well enough to understand that he would say something when he was ready. His body was stiff with tension, and she collected bits of energy from the tree to ease it for him. He sighed and relaxed in her arms.
Sweet boy. You’re safe.
“I need to leave.”
Slowly, she lifted her head, afraid to look at him.
“I can’t be here with her.”
Her mind raced, trying to find the right words. She could not ask him to stay just for her. If her entire history hadn’t just begun to unravel before her eyes, and if those kids locked away in the facilities didn’t need her, she would have followed him to the ends of the earth. Her heart, however, would forever fall short of the needs of others. How did they always end up in this place?
It was past time they stop running away when things got hard.
“What would happen if you tried?” she finally asked.
“If she figures it out, and Shigure hears, he’ll kill her. You have no idea, the kinds of enemies I’ve made, Airi. She would be in constant danger. It’s bad enough that I’ve put you at risk. She’s not as strong as you.”
“How do you know?”
The leaves above rustled in the wind, and the moonlight that filtered through danced across his face.
“I was helpless when you met me. You assumed I was weak, too. I think it’s time,” she said, pausing, unsure if this route would end in disaster. “That you stop underestimating the people who care about you.”
“She does not even know me,” he said, shoulders drooping low.
“But she could, if you’d let her.”
His eyes searched hers for the answer. He wanted to know his sister more than anything. She was the only tie he had to the life that might have been his, once. The only chance he’d ever had at being loved. He deserved this.
“It’s too dangerous. What little she would gain from me being in her life could not outweigh the risks.”
“You’re wrong. Besides, you’re not the only one looking out for her anymore.”
At that, he sucked in a deep breath.
“I would never let anything happen to her. She’s a part of you, Hiei, whether you want to accept that or not.”
His hand on the back of her head surprised her, pulling her to him as two stray tears spilled down her cheeks. The kiss, filled with gratitude, made her dizzy. When he let her go, he shook his head.
“I still do not know what to do.”
“You stay,” she said, placing her hands on either side of his face. “And you get to know her… be her friend. She doesn’t need to find out the truth.”
“Her friend?”
She smiled - a wide, warm smile. Her thumb brushed against his cheek.
“You were mine, once.”
“Hn.”
“Why don’t you come back inside? Everyone’s together.”
After a long, terrifying moment, he nodded.

Future Talk Cover Image
I made a new cover image for Future Talk.
I made one a long time ago, but I don't like it very much. I'll be adding this to the first chapter on Archive of Our Own.
Top row, left to right: Dani at the piano, the Book of Beasts, ruins of the old world
Middle row, left to right: The pods of the Bright Ones, reaching for light/hope (a mood rather than a literal scene), Dani's musical powers
Bottom row, left to right: A tori gate in the new world, Dani and the Beasts, Dani and her ukulele
I tried to keep the colors balanced as best as I could. It's such a long story that you can't incorporate everything into one image, but I think this does a sufficient job of highlighting some of the story's high points.
