Roman followed the doctor’s orders to the letter. They managed to get the bloodtest done quickly as well, and in to pick up Remus’ medication. Then Roman drove Remus to his work, and marched him in the door, and made him hand the note over to Jamie, who was vaguely bemused and thoroughly relieved.

“All sorted,” she said with a smile. “The only thing that’d upset me now is if you didn’t get better.”

Remus smiled back, shoulders sagging. “I’ll do my best, boss,” he said with a mock-salute.

“You better,” Jamie warned, hands on her hips. “Scarlett will never forgive either of us otherwise.”

“Do I hear Remus?” Scarlett came barrelling out of the break room, eyes lit up with relief, and she basically leapt over the counter to hug him. 

“Ap!” Remus chided, turning his head away. “Careful now, apparently I had pneumonia."

“Oh shit!” Scarlett exclaimed.

“Oh shit indeed,” Jamie frowned. “And I don’t trust the way you worded that, young man.”

Remus raised an eyebrow at her.

“I am older than you,” Jamie shook her head firmly. “Now go home, you imbecile. It’s good to see you in one piece, but I want it to stay that way, okay?”

“Roger that,” Remus said tiredly, and let Roman all but lead him out of the store.

They went home, and Remus was led to the couch. The next thing Remus knew, Roman was shaking him awake for dinner and medicine time. 

And that was how the rest of the week went for Remus. Sleeping, being woken up for food and medicine and a tall cup of water, more sleeping. He took some of currently few conscious hours to draft a letter of resignation for his weekend job and sent it off to Frank with great satisfaction.

They decided to keep Tan on, as not only were they doing wonders for William’s schoolwork, the two of them got along like a house on fire, and so twice a week, Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings became the regular time.

��When she arrived on Saturday, Roman opened the door, and the first thing Tan saw when they stepped inside was Remus thoroughly zonked out on the couch.

“Don’t mind him,” Roman said idly, closing the door behind them as Tan stared. “He’s recovering.”

“I did think he looked like a walking zombie,” she shrugged, wandering over the table. “Doesn’t he have work?”

“Doctors’ orders,” Roman tapped the side of this nose knowingly. “He’s off work until he gets over his pneumonia.”

“Pneumonia?!”

“Yeah,” Roman shook his head. “The dumbass walked home in the rain one night, and got sick. And then didn’t tell me he got sick. And then got worse.”

William thundered downstairs with his schoolbag in his arms. Or, he got a few steps down the stairs when he realised his dad was passed out on the couch, before he stopped dead, and switched to creeping down silently, step by step, eyes flicking to Remus’ face every few seconds.

“Is Da okay?” he asked very, very quietly, shuffling close to Roman’s legs and looking up at him nervously.

“Yeah,” Roman said, ruffling William’s hair in the way Remus always did as William clutched at his trousers, smiling as warmly as he could. “He’s just tired from being so sick. By getting lots of sleep, he should be getting better quicker!”

William relaxed a little (but only a little), and he turned and took Tan’s hand, leading her towards the kitchen table silently, still shooting looks towards the couch every so often. Tan followed William’s lead, and stayed quiet all morning.

When Remus woke, he levered himself upright and blinked to awareness to the sound of lowered voices. He shifted, swinging his legs into a sitting position and grumbling quietly, rubbing his eyes. He needed to stop falling asleep on the couch. It wasn’t good for his back.

The conversation in the background died away, and Remus glanced over to see Tan was there, at the table with William (because oh, yes! He forgot it was Saturday). William, who looked like he’d trailed off mid-thought, clamping his jaw closed as he stared at Remus, glued to the spot and shrinking in on himself a little. What? Remus glanced down at himself, wondering what he’d done, when- “Oh,” he mumbled to himself. “Shit.”

William bowed his head and turned back to his work, but it was under the pretence of being busy, of not staring, of not goading anything on. Tan was glancing between the two of them, concern flickering in their eyes.

“I’m sorry,” Remus called quietly, and Tan was about to brush it off nonchalantly, when William glanced back with big, wide, afraid, eyes, and Remus slowly rose to his feet with his hands in the air, showing they were empty, his face earnest as he tried to prove that he wasn’t upset or angry. 

“I’m going to go into the laundry for a bit,” he said quietly. “You’re fine, Will, I promise.”

The two young people watched Remus quickly and calmly cross the room, keeping his hands up, before Remus stepped into the laundry and closed the door behind him.

William visually relaxed. Tan frowned in confusion (and worry), but after a beat of silence, picked up where she left off.

Remus took a moment to close his eyes and grimace, before knocking himself on the forehead with another hissed curse. How could he be so careless? That was such a stupid slip up. No wonder Will was freaked out. He couldn’t keep his eyes squeezed shut for long, not without hearing the smashing of glass ringing in his memory, and Remus hurried out the door into the backyard before he made any sounds that William might still be able to hear.

Slumping into the old decorative park bench Roman had gotten at some antique store years ago, Remus stared at the back fence dully. He was going to stay outside for a bit, give William space. He always needed a bit of space after these kinds of scares, especially from the authority figure who triggered it. Sometimes, Remus was his refuge. Sometimes, Remus was the problem. And Remus was getting better at figuring out which was which nowadays. 

It was cold outside today. The sun was up, but the wind was cold and the air was crisp, and it settled around him like a frost. A rational, reasonable part of Remus reminded him that he was still recovering from the last time he spent too much time out in the cold, and he didn’t even have a jacket. But he’d rather freeze to death than upset his son again. So… He sat.

Some time ticked past. Remus was always terrible at keeping time. And he’d left everything inside, he had no way of entertaining himself other than his terrible, terrible thoughts, and he just crossed his arms over his belly and curled in on himself a little. He’d spent many hours out on the porch at home in all kinds of weather as he had puttering around silently in the kitchen or the bathroom, waiting for Marie to calm down, just as much time as William spent silent in his room or silent doing homework at the kitchen table, both doing their best to be invisible, and mostly succeeding. 

At some point, there was a distant wailing, but Remus couldn’t pull himself from his thoughts. He was aware of everything, and nothing. He could feel the breeze shifting the hairs on his forearms. He could feel the skin on the back of his neck prickling. He could feel time slipping by, but he had no idea how much.

Some time later, the back sliding door opened, and Roman, bundled up in a puffa jacket with a blanket thrown over his shoulder and a fully bundled up Virgil in his arms stepped out into the backyard too, with tired eyes. “Hi,” he said.

Remus didn’t turn to greet him. But he did make a sound of acknowledgement in the back of his throat, so that was as good as they were going to get. He listened to the trundle of the sliding door closing, followed by slow footsteps, before a warm body sat down next to him on the bench, and something soft and heavy settled around his shoulders, ripping a shiver out of him. 

“It’s been two hours,” Roman said quietly, and he may have leant forward, trying to get into Remus’ line of vision, but Remus’ eyes were unfocussed, and the words didn’t exactly register. There was the sound of cooing, of Virgil repeating something. Roman said something again, something that almost sounded like his name, and it wasn’t until something warm, heavy and squirmy was placed in Remus’ lap did he really come back to himself. 

Oh. There was a baby in his lap and a hand on his shoulder. He cleared his throat carefully and blinked a few times, shivering again, before finally turning to Roman. “Sorry,” Roman said quietly. “He wanted your attention and I could only hold him for so long before he was going to successfully escape.”

He meant Virgil. Virgil, who had happily settled against his chest; adorable in his baby-sized beanie and fluffy coat and little boots and mittens. Remus wrapped his arms around his son more securely, shifting in his seat, but still didn’t say anything. Roman looked at him, and finally, Remus met his gaze. Roman’s eyes were questioning; gentle but searching, and Remus had no answers for him at the moment. 

So Roman just smiled as bravely as he could, and leant forward to properly wrap the blanket around Remus and Virgil. “You okay?” he asked quietly. “...It’s too cold for you to be out here, you know.”

Remus shrugged, and, after a moment’s hesitation, leant towards Roman wordlessly. Roman settled back immediately, wrapping an arm around his brother and letting Remus rest his head on Roman’s shoulder, accepting Remus’ silence for what it was. He didn’t even say anything when Remus started crying. 

Remus was glad.

Roman led the way inside as Tan was packing up to leave, and Remus shuffled in with his head ducked and Virgil in his arms, who had fallen asleep against his chest. William looked up as he entered, and he smiled at him. Remus blanked for a second, before tentatively smiling back. He let Roman wrangle the sleeping Virgil out of his arms, and tugged the blanket around his shoulders a little tighter. 

As Tan finished packing up, they shouldered their bag, they cleared her throat, and caught Remus’ attention. “Mister Sanders,” she said formally. “Would you mind walking me to the gate?”

Remus rolled his shoulders and nodded, fiddling with the blanket, before he realised walking to his gate in a blanket might not look great. Well, he was sick, he could do whatever he liked. 

He smiled and gestured for them to lead the way, and as they ambled down the garden path, Tan turned to him. “Earlier,” she said seriously. “William got pretty freaked out.”

“Yes,” Remus agreed, closing his eyes. 

“I know this isn’t my place,” Tan said, and there was a hint of nervousness that made Remus open his eyes again, and Tan’s expression was resolute. “But I need to know. Is he... safe?”

Remus blinked. “You’re asking if I’m hurting him?” he clarified in a small voice.

Tan rolled their shoulders. “I guess,” they replied, equally as hesitant. “I… No one gets that flighty in everyday life, sir, and if-”

“William was abused by his mother,” Remus cut in, stopping Tan’s clumsy, well-intended ramble in its tracks. “A-and… Um…”

He rubbed the back of his neck as Tan’s eyes widened, and she clutched at the strap of their bag. “I see,” they acknowledged. “...Sorry.”

“Honestly?” Remus said, catching her eye and making Tan look at him. “I find it very reassuring that you noticed, and you asked me, because most people would ignore it. I realise some of it looks bad, especially with my behaviour, but…”

“You don’t have to explain,” Tan rushed, flushing with shame. “I’m sorry for accusing you. I just...”

Remus waved it off. 

“I’ve hardly seen Will so open, as when he’s spending time with you,” he shrugged. “You, and Remy, and I think he has a couple friends at school, too, but not much. This is good for him. William’s never had a lot. And we’re trying to fix that, because he deserves the world, y’know?”

There was a wet glint in Tan’s eye, and Remus turned away at the sight. It was making his throat go tight. It almost looked like pity. 

“Well!” he said, far too chipper for the conversation they’d just had. “Here’s your pay. Thank you for coming, get home safe, okay? Do you need a ride?”

“Oh, no,” Tan said quickly, accepting the envelope from Remus. “I drove here, I’m all good.”

“Great,” Remus smiled, clasping his hands. “See you next week, Tan.”

“Seeya, Mister Sanders,” Tan nodded back, and Remus wandered back up to his front door, turning to check that Tan got into their car, before going back inside and closing the door behind him.

Historical References in What Are You Going to Do With Your Life - Chapters 10-12

Chapter 10

Boleyn mumbles something about a priest. W. S. Pakenham-Walsh (1868 - 1960), Vicar of Sulgrave, Northhamptonshire, had a strong interest in Anne Boleyn. He claimed to have a series of spiritual experiences after praying at Boleyn’s burial site, and contacted clairvoyants to channel her spirit in the hopes she might become his guardian angel. He also claimed in his diary that he had contact with Henry VIII and other notable members of the Tudor court.

While witchcraft was often punished via the death penalty, Henry VIII made the law explicit in 1542 (though it was later repealed no later than 1547, under Edward VI). Several witchcraft laws were made in the UK over the years, in 1563, 1604, 1649 and 1735. These were all repealed and replaced with more general consumer protection laws, and the last person to be indicted for witchcraft (under the 1735 act) was imprisoned in 1944.

Tarot was a regular set of cards for most of its history, used in various, but similar, trick-taking card card games. It became associated with ancient wisdom in 1781, when Antoine Court de Gébelin wrote an essay claiming (with no evidence) that ancient Egyptian priests had distilled the mystical Book of Thoth into the cards.

“Psychic is Greek, and clairvoyant is French. One is about thinking, and the other is about seeing.” Psychic comes from the Greek word psychikos (‘of the mind’) and clairvoyance is a combination of two French words (‘clear’ and ‘vision’). Catherine of Aragon was known to speak both French and Greek, as well as Latin, her native Spanish, and English.

Cunning man (or woman) was another word for folk healers.

In 1532, Catherine Parr’s brother-in-law from her second marriage, William Neville, was accused of treason for allegedly predicting the king’s death and his own ascension as Earl of Warwick (a title made extinct during the Wars of the Roses, but would be recreated in 1547 and twice after that). He went to at least three magicians to confirm this prediction, all of which agreed that it was meant to be true (it wasn’t). One of these magicians was Richard Jones of Oxford, who was imprisoned and questioned on the matter. He did his best to exonerate himself of responsibility. I have found five references confirming his existence – but many of them claim he had a sceptre he used to ‘summon the four king devils’, which he used for divination purposes.

Chapter 11

Jones of Oxford was taken in for questioning as part of the Neville affair, and he did his best in his confession to exonerate himself. Neville’s claims of a prophetic dream showing himself as Earl of Warwick were now a “fair castle” which Neville assumed must be the castle of Warwick, and a shield with “sundry arms I could not rehearse”. He did admit to writing “a foolish letter or two according to [Neville’s] foolish desire, to make pastime to laugh at”. No treason, just jokes, please don’t execute me Thomas Cromwell. Jones claimed to take his alchemy seriously, however, and wrote that “To make the philosopher’s stone I will jeopard my life, so to do it,” if the king so wished. He would require twelve months “upon silver” and twelve and a half “upon gold”, and was willing to be imprisoned while he worked. Jones made a similar offer to Cromwell, but there is no evidence either man accepted. Jones was released in exchange for revealing incriminating evidence against another figure of interest. The other magicians caught up in this incident, William Wade and a man known only as ‘Nashe’, had perfected their disappearing act and were not sent to the Tower.

There is a story that Elizabeth I attributed the destruction of the Spanish armada in 1588 to John Dee’s wizardry. Given that, as mentioned, Dee was out of favour with Elizabeth at the time, this is likely untrue.

Elizabeth I’s death was in March of 1603, after she became sick and remained in a “settled and unmovable melancholy”, sitting on a cushion and staring at nothing. The death of a close friend in February of that year came as a particular blow – that of her second cousin and First Lady of the Bedchamber, Catherine Howard.

James I (or James VI, depending on where you’re from)… James I of England was also James VI of Scotland. His mother was Mary Queen of Scots, who was executed by Elizabeth I, and his great-grandmother was Margaret Tudor, Henry VIII’s sister.

“Anna, born Duchess of Jülich, Cleves and Berg.” This was how Anna signed hers’ and Henry’s marriage treaty, known as the ‘Beer Pot Documents’, because someone drew a stein at the bottom.

Bowling, as a game, can trace its origins back to ancient Egypt, and has been quite popular the world over throughout history. Henry VIII was an avid bowler himself (when Hampton Court was remodelled, bowling alleys were included with tennis courts and tiltyards), but banned the sport for the lower classes. The law against workers bowling (unless it was Christmas and in their master’s presence) was repealed in 1845.

We return to the ground, because from it we were taken. Paraphrasing of Genesis 3:19.

The (possible) first appearance of the word ‘alligator’ in the English language is from Romeo and Juliet. The description of The Apothecary’s shop mentions “a tortoise hung, an alligator stuff’d, and other skins of ill-shaped fishes”. Traditionally, medieval apothecaries and astrologers kept skeletons, fossils, and/or taxidermied pieces on display to demonstrate their worldliness.

The anger over calling the alligator ‘William’ could come from Parr, or from Anna. Her brother’s name, Wilhelm, is often anglicised as William.

Midsomer county does not exist and never has. It’s the setting for the long-running mystery TV show Midsomer Murders. Incidentally, Catherine Parr’s native county of Westmorland existed at one point, but no longer does (the area is now in the county of Cumbria). She is not the only English-born queen who this applies to; Jane Seymour’s Wiltshire and Anne Boleyn’s Norfolk still exist (and have since antiquity), but Katherine Howard was most likely born in Lambeth, which would have been in the county of Middlesex at the time. The area is now under the ceremonial county of Greater London.

“Honestly? Margaret Pole’s was worse.” Margaret Pole, Countess of Sailsbury and the last of the House of York, was kept in the Tower of London for two and a half years for her supposed support of Catholicism’s attempts to overthrow the king, before being informed of her death ‘within the hour’ on the 27th of May, 1541. She answered that she did not know the crime of which she was accused (and had carved a poem into the wall of her cell to that effect), but went to the block anyway. It allegedly took eleven blows from the inexperienced axeman to separate her head from her body. There is another story that she tried to run from the executioner and was killed in the attempt, but this is likely a fabrication. Regardless, pretty much everyone thought this was not only a bad idea on Henry’s part (killing Margaret removed any leverage the king had on her rebellious son, Cardinal Reginald Pole), it was also pointlessly cruel and a painfully undignified end.

(She was also Catherine of Aragon’s lady-in-waiting, and governess to Mary at several points.)

That everyone around her, bar a few visitors, would actively benefit from her death… Yet another quote of Elizabeth Tyrwhitt’s testimony: Parr, on her deathbed, claimed she was “not well-handled” by those around her; “for those that be about me careth not for me, but standeth laughing at my grief, and the more good I will to them, the less good they will to me”.

Chapter 12

According to a lady-in-waiting, Anne Boleyn claimed she would rather see Catherine of Aragon hanged “than have to confess that she was her queen and mistress”. This incident is probably the origin of the lyric “somebody hang you!” from Don’t Lose Ur Head.

Catalina uses a few Spanish phrases in this chapter, which don’t get directly translated. The first, No se hizo la miel para la boca del asno, directly translates to ‘Honey is not made for the donkey’s mouth’, and essentially means ‘Good things shouldn’t be wasted on those who won’t appreciate them’. Lavar cerdos con jabón es perder tiempo y jabón is ‘Washing pigs with soap is a waste of time and soap’, and is meant to indicate some things aren’t worth the energy.

…like that dream she has where she is cut up by a servant… An autopsy was done on Catherine of Aragon as part of the embalming process, which revealed the growth on her heart. This was done by the castle chandler (a dealer or trader) as part of his official duties.

Jane Seymour got rid of most of the hallmarks of Anne Boleyn’s tenure during her own queenship. The extravagance and lavish entertainments were banned, along with the French fashions Boleyn had introduced – including French hoods, which Boleyn is wearing in the portrait we have of her. Jane, as mentioned, wore a gable hood in her portraits.

“I don’t know why I’m so surprised that people care about what I say.” In the words of nineteenth century proto-feminist Agnes Strickland, Jane “passed eighteen months of regal life without uttering a sentence significant enough to warrant preservation”, which is kind of a mean thing to say. Seymour certainly said things during this time, we know this from reports, but there aren’t any direct quotes from her during her time as queen.

It was only after her death that Henry ‘loved’ her, but she is certain that he mourned for only for his own loss. There are reports that, during Jane’s labour, doctors advised Henry he might lose either Jane or Edward. Henry is claimed to have replied, “If you cannot save both, at least let the child live, for other wives are easily found.”

Countdown is a British television game show that revolves around word and number puzzles. It has been going for almost forty years, and is one of the longest-running game shows in the world, with over 7000 episodes.

“I saw a ghost bear kill someone, once.” Anne isn’t making this up. Supposedly, the incident occurred in 1816, when a Yeoman Warder saw a ghostly bear somewhere in the Tower of London. Terrified, he tried to stab it with his bayonet, only for the weapon to go through the image and strike the door behind it. The guard died of shock later on. A similar event happened in 1864, where two guards witnessed “a whitish, female figure” gliding towards one of the soldiers. The soldier in question charged this figure, only to go straight through it, upon which he fainted.

Elizabeth was imprisoned in the Tower of London for a little over two months in 1554, as a result of Wyatt’s Rebellion against Queen Mary. The rebellion was also the likely reason for the execution of Lady Jane Grey – both she and Elizabeth were Protestants in line for the throne, and therefore ‘more suitable’ as ruler. Both Elizabeth and Jane Grey denied any involvement, but the latter’s father and brother (also executed) were direct contributors.

“… you did die, Elizabeth was really upset about it…” Elizabeth took the news of Parr’s death badly. She refused to leave her bed, and was unable to go a mile from her residence, for five months following Parr’s passing.

Not because she liked that bearded potato man, God no… I found this deeply cursed engraving (first produced in 1544) in one of my books on the six wives, and now I want you all to suffer with me.

Anne of Cleves reacted poorly to being told her marriage would be annulled – some accounts say she fainted, others says she cried and screamed. Both could be true. The reasons given were threefold – One, the marriage was unconsummated (From testimony given by two servants, Anne thought a kiss goodnight counted as consummation – likely untrue, but this is the only reason that actually has merit). Two, Anne was precontracted to Francis of Lorraine (Untrue – the betrothal would only take effect if Anne’s father paid the dowry, and he didn’t). Three, Anne was not a virgin as claimed, based on the description of her ‘breasts and belly’, a Tudor way of saying Anne had previously given birth (untrue, and conflicts with the testimony for reason one). Last academic year, Theo started developing really terrible anxiety both academically and socially, as well as being constantly exhausted, achy, and physically ill. It all kind of threw her into a rly dark place and at the end of the year she had a really bad episode that landed her in the hospital and she ended up spending the whole following year in and out of medical facilities and she EVENTUALLY was diagnosed with POTS on top of anxiety and depression :/ this was thanks to archie’s persistence in getting a correct diagnosis after so long of dismissal from doctors and from their parents because he’s the realest and he understands what its like :( so bby is sick and tired but trying her best. Also her parents just think she has to get over it but that’s not how this works luvs

This year she’s just trying to find some semblance of normalcy but it’s hard to keep up and act normally! Kipland Kinkel is a schizophrenic spree killer who murdered his parents before committing a school shooting at his former school on May 20, 1998. He killed 2 students and injured dozens more. This spree was considered the deadliest shooting at an American high school until the Columbine massacre the following year.

Kipland Kinkel was born on August 30, 1982 in Springfield, Oregon. His parents were William and Faith Kinkel, who were both Spanish teachers. His sister, Kristin, is six years older than him. When Kip was around 6 years old, the family took a sabbatical year in Spain, where he attended a non-English speaking school, where he failed to learn much because the teacher would only speak in Spanish. When the family returned to Springfield Kip began attending Walterville Elementary School but was made to repeat the first grade. In the second grade Kip was tested to see if he was eligible for any special education services, but got an average score on the neurological screening test. He was noted to have disadvantages in certain motor skills and spelling, and that his frustration and anxiety was particularly high. In the third grade, he continued struggling with writing and spelling but did very well in mathematics. Kinkel’s parents had him retested for special education and the 2nd time he qualified. By the end of the year Kinkel was performing extremely well academically, and was learning to control his frustration. In the fourth grade he was diagnosed as dyslexic. By the time he began middle school Kinkel began getting himself into trouble with authority. When he was in seventh grade Kinkel, along with some of his friends, purchased a copy of The Anarchist Cookbook (a bomb-making instructional manual) along with other similar titles. In the eighth grade, Kip was caught shoplifting CDs from a local Target and (although nobody knew at the time) bought a sawed-off shotgun from a friend which he hid in his bedroom.

On January 4, 1997, Kip and a friend went to a snowboarding clinic in Bend, Oregon, and whilst there they ended up being arrested for throwing rocks at cars driving down a highway, one of which struck a car. Both boys were charged and referred to the Department of Youth Service, where Bill and Faith were called to collect Kip. Because of this incident, Kinkel began visiting psychologist Dr. Jeffrey Hicks at his mother’s insistence. Hicks didn’t find any signs of a thought disorder or psychosis and diagnosed Kinkel with major depressive disorder. Hicks’ notes say that Kip became “tearful” when talking about his father, who he had a strained relationship with. On February 26, Kip and his parents visited psychologist Dr. John Crumbley, who believed Kinkel was remorseful about the rock-throwing incident and Kinkel ended up being sentenced to 32 hours of community service. Despite his visits with Dr. Hicks, which suggested that Kip was improving, he received a 2 day suspension on April 23 for assault a student that Kinkel claimed had shoved him. 6 days later, he was again suspended, this time for 3 days, after throwing a pencil at another student. On June 2, Dr. Hicks recommended that Kip began using Prozac (an antidepressant) and this seemed to work. On June 27, without the knowledge of his doctor, Kinkel managed to buy a 9m Glock 19 semiautomatic pistol. Bill Kinkel began letting the gun into the house in order to allow Kinkel to begin taking gun safety lessons. On July 30 his emotional growth meant he no longer needed counselling. During the summer Kinkel purchased a 2nd gun – a .22-caliber Ruger MK II semiautomatic pistol – from his friend and hid it from his parents. When the summer was over, he started at Thurston High School where he excelled academically and was invited to play on the freshman football team. On September 30, Kinkel’s father, Bill, purchased a .22-caliber Ruger 10/22 semiautomatic rifle for his son, as well as a hunting knife. At this stage, he had started hanging out with a tougher group of kids and also began playing with explosives, claiming this helped to vent out his anger.

During Kinkel’s time in high school, a series of school shootings occurred, starting with 16-year-old Luke Woodham. Oh October 1, he stabbed and bludgeoned his mother to death before using a Marlin Model 336 .30-30-caliber lever-action rifle to kill 2 students and injure 7 others at Pearl High School in Pearl, Mississippi before being apprehended and arrested. On December 1, in West Paducah, Kentucky, 14-year-old Michael Carneal began firing into a group of praying students at Heath High School, using a .22-caliber Ruger MK II semiautomatic pistol, killing 3 and injuring 5 before surrendering to authorities. On March 24, 1998, Westside Middle School students Mitchell Johnson and Andrew Golden set off the fire alarm to lure out the entire student body before opening fire on them with 2 semiautomatic rifles, a bolt-action rifle and 4 handguns. They killed 4 students and 1 teacher, injuring 9 other students and 1 other teacher. Both were arrested. Kinkel and a friend saw the news coverage of the massacre and both thought it was “pretty cool.” During May 1998 Kip and some friends toilet-papered a house using 400 rolls of toilet paper in an attempt to beat a school record. They accomplished the record but the group was caught.

On May 19, Kinkel arranged for the purchase of a stolen .32-caliber Beretta semiautomatic pistol from Korey Ewert. The day after that, on May 20, 1998, Kinkel arrived at Thurston High School at around 8am and bought Ewert’s gun for $110. He hid it in his locker. Sometime later, the owner of the Beretta, Scott Keeney, called the school to report his missing gun and to tell them that he believed one of the students, a friend of his son’s, had stolen it. At 9:15am, Kinkel confessed to having the gun to Detective Al Warthen who was at the school on other business. Kinkel and Ewert were arrested, both suspended from school pending expulsion. At 3pm Bill Kinkel arrived at the police station after being informed about Kip’s arrest and picked him up. At 3:30pm Kinkel grabbed the Ruger 10/22 rifle and shot s father in the back of the head, killing him, as Bill sat at the kitchen table drinking coffee. He dragged his father’s body into the bathroom and covered it with a sheet. Whilst waiting for his mother to come home, Kinkel told a few callers that his father was “unavailable.” At around 6:30pm Faith Kinkel arrived home and was walking up the garage steps when Kip told her he loved her before shooting her repeatedly with the Ruger rifle, killing her. He dragged her body across the garage and covered it with a sheet.

The next morning, on May 21, 1998, Kinkel left the house wearing a long trench coat that hid his 3 guns and the hunting knife taped to his leg. He was carrying almost 1,200 rounds of ammo in his backpack. He drove his mother’s car to school, parked on North 61st Street (2 blocks away from the school) and took a shortcut through a dirt path. At 7:55am he entered the school building, firing 2 shots in the hallway with his Ruger rifle. 2 students, Ben Walker and Ryan Atteberry, were hit and injured. Kip then ran into the school cafeteria, where around 200 students were sat, and fired the remaining 48 shots into the crowd. Mikael Nickolauson was killed and 22 others were injured, 2 of them critically. Kinkel aimed the rifle at student Michael Crowley and tried to shoot him but the rifle was empty. When he tried to switch magazines, 17-year-old student Jacob Ryker took the opportunity to tackle Kinkel to the ground.  Jacob’s brother Joshua, brothers Doug and David Ure, Adam Walberger and at least 1 other student joined Jacob in trying to pin down Kinkel. As a result, Kinkel drew his 9mm Glock 19 and fired several shots. Jacob was hit and wounded and another student was injured before Kip was complete subdued. At 8:04am Officer Dan Bishop, first officer on scene, arrested Kinkel. At around 8:50am Kinkel was taken to the police station where he was locked in an interrogation room. He somehow managed to retrieve his hunting knife despite being handcuffed and when Detective Al Warthen came into the room Kinkel threatened him with the knife, charging at him. Warthen used pepper spray on him when he tried to slash his wrists with the knife while another detective took the knife away. At 9:30am 3 Lane County sheriffs arrived at Kinkel’s house and discovered the body of Faith and Bill. They also found 4 homemade bombs constructed with soda cans and a 5th bomb inside a fire extinguisher. After 15 nearby houses were evacuated, explosive devices were detonated on the Kinkel property and police found 2 stashes of inactive bombs, 1 in the crawlspace underneath the porch and the other in Kinkel’s bedroom. Also found was a hand grenade, casings to 2 howitzer shells, fireworks and unspecified chemicals.

On May 22, 1998, Kinkel was arraigned and was charged with 58 felony counts, including 4 counts of aggravated murder and 26 counts of attempted murder. During the arraignment, the defence used mental health experts to argue that Kinkel was mentally ill at the time of the shooting spree. Psychologist Dr. William H. Sack commented that the events would have been prevented if his mental troubles were recognised and treated earlier. Dr. Jeffrey Hicks, Kinkel’s previous psychiatrist, testified that Kip was in “satisfactory mental health” by the time he stopped going to therapy. On September 24, 1999, Kipland Kinkel pled guilty to all of the counts he was charged with and on November 11 was sentenced to 111 year in prison without the possibility of parole. During the hearing, Kinkel apologised for the killings. On June 19, 2007, almost a decade after the killings, Kinkel sought a new trial on the grounds that his lawyers didn’t take his case to trial, instead using the insanity defence. William Sack, now retired, and clinical psychologist Dr. Orin Bolstad, supported the claims, saying that Kinkel exhibited signs of paranoid schizophrenia, but had managed to hide them because he felt it was an abnormality and an obstacle to his social life. According to the doctors, he had experienced delusions and hallucinations, some of which included the Walt Disney Company trying to take control of America and the government implanting a computer chip into his brain. 2 months later, his request for a new trial was denied by a Marion County judge, but he appealed on the grounds that he had been given ineffective assistance in counselling during the original trial. On January 12, 2011, the Oregon Court of Appeals denied the appeal. Kinkel is currently incarcerated at the Oregon State Correctional Institution in Salem, Oregon, having been transferred there from the Oregon Youth Authority on June 11, 2007.

Hi guys. Well, to start out with I have my driver's license address set to my uncle's house in pembroke pines, FL, but I live here in Hialeah Gardens, FL. Why do I have it set to my uncle's house you ask? Well, back when I was 18 (i'm 20 now) my mom persuaded me to set my insurance address (progressive) to my uncle's house so it would be cheaper. At fault driver's car insurance won't pay for my damages!?

Hey guys and gals, My wife was in a car accident on 10/8 driving our truck with liability only insurance (IE: not full coverage because the truck is only worth ~$3000 and it's paid for). She was turning right and had slowed down to turn (with her turn signal on) when a speeding truck slammed into the van behind her, ramming the van in to our truck. The police filed a report, in which the driver of the speeding truck (an 18 year old kid, that had just left his house less than 1/4 mile away) was determined to be at fault. It is worth note that this happened in front of two different auto body shops, and within sight of the house the at fault driver had just left. Their insurance company, state farm, finally contacted us on 11/8 after not returning our phone calls for nearly two weeks saying they had determined he was in fact at fault and would send an adjuster the following Monday. He came, inspected the truck, determined it was repairable, then said we would hear from their office later that day. When they called they told us the damage was more than 75% of the vehicles worth so it was considered total and they would send the required paperwork to my email address to begin payment. Within 3 hours, the claim agent we had talked to the previous Friday said an owner of one of the auto shops had came forward (all of a sudden, no mention of a witness before) and that he had a notarized statement saying the van struck our vehicle before the truck struck the van. The insurance company now will not pay us for the damages. We tried to call the witness and get a copy of his report because State Farm would not give us the copy. Then we called the other auto body shop and both the owner and one of his employees both seen the accident and say that the truck was at fault, and the owner overheard the driver say specifically that it was his fault. When we bring this to the agents attention, she claims this is not evidence because they know the at fault driver. We found out that the first witness also knows the driver, but can't prove it. Ours is a small town, you don't have neighbors that you don't know or speak to. It seems we are at an impasse, and I have been without a truck for nearly 6 weeks. What should I do in this instance? Get an attorney? Our insurance agency is adamant about not intervening since we did not have full coverage insurance. It may be worth noting that my wife has had back and neck pain since the accident and went to the hospital the day of the accident, the family doctor twice since, and has an appointment with a chiropractor next week (all of which our insurance has paid for.)""

The week ticked by slowly. It was nice to have time off work, but it went so slow because it was hitting Remus in waves with how sick he was. Roman spent Wednesday and Thursday night arguing with him about how Remus should go see a doctor, before Remus finally caved, booking an appointment Friday afternoon. Roman, it turned out, didn’t work Fridays, so he took him in personally, bringing Remy over for the afternoon to watch the kids, seeing as William was home still.

Remy got there as Tan was packing up her gear, complimenting William’s work. They froze in the doorway, staring in surprise as Tan turned around. 

Remus glanced between the two of them in alarm. He wasn’t expecting this reaction. He couldn’t remember what Tan had said before, whether they were friends or not? Did he have to break up a fight? He wasn’t prepared for this.

“Oh, my god!” Remy cried, tossing their bag aside and crossing the room with long strides. “Gurl, it’s been too long!” “Remyyyyy!” Tan whooped, rushing over and throwing their arms around the older teen. Remus gave a snort of relief as Remy all but lifted Tan off the ground in a huge hug. They started laughing and talking loudly, Remy putting them down and fumbling for their bag. Roman sidled up to Remus, and tapped at his watch with a soft clearing of his throat.

“Yeah, yeah, I know,” Remus huffed. “We gotta go, kids.” “Ah,” Tan said in polite apology, withdrawing their arms and going back to gather the last of her stuff. Roman and Remus exchanged a look, especially as Remy deflated a little, coming to a wordless agreement over a single nod.

“Hey, Tan?” Remus called, even as Roman started to usher him towards the door. “Since you’re off-duty, you can do whatever you like now, right? The kids love you, and a friend of Remy’s is welcome in my home. Stick around, kid. If you want.” Roman gave a thumbs up as he picked up their coats from where Remus had left them and threw Remus’ at him, clocking him in the face with the old leather, causing the young audience to laugh. “You mean it?” Tan asked, eyes shining and a smile creeping across her face. “Yep!” Remus said. “Yes,” Roman agreed. “Keep an eye on them all, Remy. I got a bigger kid to look after. C’mon, Re, we’re going to be late.” “I’m coming, I’m coming,” Remus huffed as he pulled his coat on, following his brother out the door. “Snacks are in the cupboard! Behave!”

And with that, Roman closed the door firmly behind them and ushered Remus into the car before he got any other ideas.

Roman had agreed to wait in the waiting room as Remus went in. Remus always felt anxious at the doctors. He knew his GP was lovely. He knew this was safe. But his past appointments had always been infrequent and fairly secretive, so the moment he walked in the door, it felt like his time limit was ticking down. But it was okay. He was here, he was supposed to be here, he was allowed to be here. That was the mantra he was turning over and over in his head as he sat down. 

Explaining what had happened to his doctor was kind of hard. It wasn’t even, like… It wasn’t a lie, y’know? But it did feel like he was fishing for pity points. It’s not for pity, it’s for health, he told himself firmly in a voice that sounded awfully like Roman’s. Fortunately, she was very patient with him, she always was, prompting him when his voice gave out, and soon she had enough information.

“Alright,” she hummed, typing a few things into her computer and clicking through a few things before turning back to Remus. “I want to listen to your lungs, if that’s alright.” “Sure thing, Doc,” he nodded. “Do you… uh, do I take my shirt off, or?” “We can just lift it,” she smiled. “Though I suppose i can’t stop you from taking it off if you wish.”

The press of the stethoscope was a little jarring. Remus stared at the wall as he breathed deeply, as instructed, before turning and burying his head in his elbow to cough. He didn’t miss how the doctor winced at how chesty that cough sounded, and she turned back to add some more information to his file.

She moved on to taking a few other tests, involving thermometers and other exciting equipment, writing some more, clicking through some more things, before eventually turning back in her spinny chair to face Remus.

“Alright,” she said seriously. “I can confidently say that you have pneumonia.” Remus blinked. “What?” “Pneumonia,” the doctor repeated. “You have it.”

Remus blinked at her a bit more. “Pneumonia,” he echoed.

“Yes,” she confirmed. “I’m writing you a script for antibiotics, and I’d like to do a blood test, because there are some other things that don’t exactly line up with pneumonia, and I’d rather be safe than sorry.” “Like what?” Remus asked, alarmed. “Well, the fainting,” she pointed out. “It could be a handful of things. Sleep deprivation, dehydration, lack of oxygen in the brain, so on.” “Wait,” Remus said with a laugh that was creeping too high. “One of those is not like the other.”

The doctor shook her head. “I will contact you as soon as I can,” she told him, turning back to her computer and beginning to print things out. “If it’s serious, you will need to go to hospital.” Remus looked at the floor, tears beginning to bead in his eyes. This wasn’t good. He… they couldn’t afford that.

“But for now,” she continued, pulling things off the little printer beside her and scrawling the necessary things on them, signing them, “take these antibiotics, and get some regular, good, sleep, and drink more water. I remember your hydration habits well, Remus.” Remus rubbed the back of his neck with a little laugh.

“Sleep is a wonderful healer,” she said, finally turning back to him and handing the papers over with a reassuring smile. “You’ll be okay, Remus. I promise you that. Take this to the pharmacy and pick your prescription up as soon as you can, okay? And take a week off work.” “I’ve already had a week off work,” Remus said, alarmed. “Take another,” she declared. “Doctor’s orders.”

She quickly turned and printed out another note, before signing it.

“If you push yourself, you’ll damage yourself, and then you’ll never go back to work,” she said seriously, staring Remus down as she put the doctors’ note directly into his hand. “And that’s not a threat, Remus. I want you back on your feet as quickly as you do. But you aren’t helping yourself if you don’t rest. Did you come alone?” “No,” he said with a shiver. “My brother brought me in. He’s in the waiting room.” “Great,” she said, standing with a clap of her hands. “Let’s go.”

She walked Remus to the front desk, and as Remus paid for the appointment, she crossed the room to Roman and handed him something. Remus wandered over. “What’s this?” “It’s a list of instructions,” the doctor said sternly, though there was still a smile in her eyes. “I know it’s safer for you now, Remus. So make the most of it, okay?” Before Remus could really reply, she turned and headed back to her office, waving goodbye.
