I think the best part of finishing Burrow's End is the moment about six or so hours later, where you're chilling in the shower or in the middle of dinner, and you suddenly realize that the tape—you know, that tape—wasn't all five of the Firsts dog-piling and murdering Dr. Winnebago, but literally just Phoebe. And just that one stoat was enough to cause the carnage the kids found in the store room and turn the doctor into a Meat Dave when she didn't even know how to speak human yet.

I was gonna put it in the tags of a post aabria made but didn't want to be like "hey also my thing!" on a serious post so like. She's pointed out that people's unwillingness to understand that people in the citadel have been and are being good to Suvi absolutely sucks ass and she's right. I admire Suvi as a character and Aabria as the player so much as someone who grew up in church - not just in it but of it. Dad was a pastor, I was in the choir, I taught classes, the whole shebang.

Almost everything about church was fucked to hell, looking back, and I'll carry damage and guilt from it for a longer time yet. Possibly forever. But the people I learned from, admired, befriended, and surrounded myself with were not evil colonizers looking to eradicate every other religion or force convert people or what have you. They were just people living under an ideology that did a whole lot of harm to people outside of it and demanded, as part of its tenets, that you restrict yourself from mingling too much with the Others lest you be confused and turn away from what is written. Hell the Citadel hasn't shown itself to be even that pervasive. I haven't heard a single person question Suvi's conviction to the work of the citadel because of the company she keeps.

Anyway my point is that there is absolutely no reason for Suvi to turn on or even grossly doubt the Citadel, questions about the spells on her nonwithstanding. Aabria is playing on a level of refusing to meta game that is incredible to watch and which makes her point of view very easy to relate to. Suvi's community is stepping up for her. Her friends love her, AND they are upset for valid reasons and puzzling through their own ways of looking at the world - ways that do not come with a manual/guide the way life at the Citadel does. Nothing has been laid before Suvi at this point that would warrant more than a few concerns, let alone full divestment from the Citadel and everyone else Suvi has ever loved, certainly not in the name of two people she would give her life for but who do not in any way have their shit together.

They're just people. Steel is a good person. She is kind, she is sincere, frighteningly intelligent, and a fierce advocate not only for those who are hers but those outside the citadel who deserve respect for the way they see the world and move through it.

Steel is also the right hand of the empire. That is, in fact, the point.

I'm sorry a lot of y'all can only handle stories that soothe hard choices with "well they were bad/mean to you/bigots anyway" and lay it on thick until the moment the character has had enough. That's not actually how any of this works and the realer view of how someone like Suvi would in fact view the world and her place in it is airtight. The chops on Aabria for sticking to it and on Brennan for refusing to mark citadel citizens as evil across the board (or hardly at all) is incredible and the refusal to entertain those ideas as a fan is in fact a skill issue in nearly every case.

Audiodrama Sunday 6/9/2024

I have so much to say this week! I usually take some very quick notes as to what I want to say in these as I listen to stuff, but this week I have a ton of notes. Also, I made a Tumblr Community for audiodramas. If you want an invite, please ask me! Also, if you can figure out how to reblog posts into a community, which is supposedly a thing you can do, please tell me.

To start off, season 16 of Lost Terminal started this week. It feels great to be back in this world, this show is so cozy. I love the little programming tidbits in this show, as a nerdy programmer into conlangs and hard scifi this show feels like it was made for me specifically. It looks like the premise for this season is an entire season that takes place over 10 seconds, which is such an incredibly cool idea. I love how they are leaning into the relative time different between humans and AIs due to processing speed.

@worldsbeyondpod had so many crazy moments I have to talk about. First off *music change* "roll a stealth check for the fox" out of nowhere was terrifying. I truly felt Erika's gasp when Brennan said the words "patchy corduroy witch hat". I haven't even gotten to the biggest moment in this episode. Holy shit poor Straw. This story has so much moral nuance, I'm obsessed with @quiddie's defense of Suvi on tumblr since the last episode. Speaking of Aabria, "fuck your scene" was so perfect. Finally, Glassheart moment spotted at the end of the episode. Even though it will never happen, I will forever be a Glassheart shipper.

@worldgonewrongpod this week was very fun. It is weird that I was picturing a specific tree at a small local park I walk through all the time whenever the tree was being described? I cannot unlink that tree and this episode in my mind. The reenacted council meeting was great, I'm excited for the update to this episode at the end of the season. Also, I'm not sure I've said this yes, but the theme song for this show is perfect. I've already added it to my playlist.

@wanderersjournalpod ended on a cliffhanger this week. Are we finally going to learn Pluto's whole deal next week? I can't wait to find out.

@midstpodcast that was a hell of an opening scene. This whole episode showed such an interesting side of Weep. I want to avoid spoilers for this show, but that ending god damn. That is not what I expected. We must be getting close to the end of the season, they resolved the opening scene and the episodes are getting much longer. Looking at the lengths of the previous season, there's probably 2 more episodes.

A very short update from my dear friend over at @re-dracula this week. Renfield is so unsettling. I don't actually know anything about Renfield, so I'm learning as I go. I think he's some sort of vampire spawn?

@breakerwhiskey I caught up and what the fuck. This show keeps twisting the knife. Hey, at least Birdie is finally talking in real time again. She confirmed Whiskey's theory, which is nice, and finally gave us her backstory. Then the second reveal in a later episode, holy shit Harry. This really explains the whole dynamic between Whiskey and Harry. This was the big fight Whiskey keeps referencing.

I listened to the first episode of season 2 of Skyjacks Courier's Call. The city that it's going to be set in is really cool, and I loved the Fun Money shenanigans. Going on a road trip tomorrow and I'm going to listen to a lot more of it.

Finally, there was a new SCP: Find Us Alive this week. This was a cool episode, I really liked the art show. But the big thing was the very end of this episode. My theory was right! Sometimes, when talking into the mic, Harley was subject to the memetic effect and forgot what he was talking about. But only sometimes. They've established that it only happens if someone can hear you. This meant that every time he forgot, someone was listening! Great foreshadowing!

Because of the aforementioned road trip, I'm going to post this a few hours early. This is at least better than my usual time of "forgetting it until the last moment."

its because the cast themselves keep circling this question, like notably aabria's character went: "are you worth saving" to the dawnfather

and its primarily because ludinus keeps using the gods in his fucking slogan. kill all the gods. thats what he says to get people on their side. and that automatically shifts the conversation even when we learn uh... thats not the actual problem on hand.

ludinus is essentially in control of the conversation and every single time someone tells his followers, "hey this will kill everyone", their followers dont believe that. then they shift the conversation to talk about why the gods are shit. which loops the cast back around to talking about it.

(and also the audience buys into it like ludinus has a point - i think the whole core of his eviltude is that he really doesnt, like any cult, their points are entirely fabricated to control their followers - using his talking points is letting him control the conversation)

Speaking of costumes (we weren’t but that’s okay) I hope that everyone is a comfortable temperature.  This group is such a mix of costume weights that I feel like either Michelle’s got to be freezing, or Taliesin and Sam are going to start sweating.  Glad that Michelle’s ears look to be on a headband though, I was worried she had them actually on her ears cause that would be painful as fuck for any longish period of time.

It’s an interesting combination, I’m enjoying watching Aabria play, but at the same time this PC feels like all the NPCs from ExU.  I think I said it at the time, but it holds true now.  Creating a ‘character’ doesn’t need to be an integral part into d&d, because she’s just as enjoyable as the other players without feeling like ‘someone different’.

(I am NOT going to go into dRaMa here, but watching this is also reminding me that there are things that some CR cast does in their regular style of play which I just don’t vibe with overall.)

Make Some Noise is perhaps the more literal Whose Line, because they had so much fun with the setup on Game Changer they did it like 3 or 4 times and decided to just have that be its own thing and give their writers a chance to keep making silly prompts.

Um, Actually is Trapp capitalizing on how silly various pieces of nerd culture can be while making fun of shitty misogynists and showcases some incredible moments of info-dumping.

Breaking News is Grant O'Brien making his friends say stupid or embarrassing shit with a straight face to see how long it takes them to break, and occasionally the rest of them making Grant share his own ridiculous and embarrassing life stories in retaliation.

Dimension 20 is Brennan and friends condensing various tabletop campaigns into a dozen or so episodes each where he generally gets to pit them against the real bad guys, capitalism and religion.

Dirty Laundry is Lily basically doing story time as a drinking game, by convincing everyone to share weird and surprising stories about their past, wording it in the goofiest way possible, and then getting everyone else to guess whose story it is. Also Grant is there to be slutty and show off how much of a hipster bartender he can be.

Play It by Ear is Zach and Jess doing improv musical numbers, which is exactly what it sounds like.

There are other mostly older shows from before CollegeHumor completely died that have some funny bits in them, etc., but the new content is generally where its at.

Side-notes, for tabletop fans: - The 4 episode "prequel" game Brennan ran for Critical Role called Exandria Unlimited: Calamity is an amazing piece of entertainment and worth a watch if you've got the time. - In addition, the Dimension 20 campaign Misfits and Magic is also only 4 episodes, is run by Aabria, and is literally going "hey, what if teenagers from our world had read Harry Potter and then got to go to a magical school and do magic but also point out how it doesn't make any fucking sense, wouldn't that be wild?" It's great, check it out.

oh man exandria unlimited episode 4 was maybe the best one yet, so we're doing the rambly-text-post of thoughts again! spoilers, of course, under the cut

so much stuff HAPPENED

the first ten minutes of utter chaos via bad animal handling checks was peak D&D

also I liked Aabria just speeding through weeks of travel, that feels like I have permission to do the same

SURPRISE NEW CHARACTER! it's been so long since we had a surprise character! since before the hiatus! this is the first surprise character I've seen since I caught up I love it!

I was immediately extremely attracted to Fy'ra Rai

Opal and Ted's conversation was BRUTAL. so good. man, these people are such good actors!

it's also been so much fun watching Aimee and Robbie shine at the RPing this episode! they're so good at it!!

oooh Syngorn! Liam's little smile when it's mentioned is adorable

the whole atmosphere of Byroden was SO well done. like, it could've felt weird or over-the-top in a bad way, but it didn't—Aabria handled it so well, and even as someone who has no experience of the US south, the vibe (TM) and feel was immediately palpable and I Got It

also the rest of the cast jumped in on it so well I love it

actually got strong Mighty Fine/C2 E97 vibes from the whole clothes shopping situation it was great

I was not expecting to enjoy the pageant so much but!! I really did!!!!

also loved how it led to some great character development for especially Opal, but also Dorian and Dariax

by the way Aabria's idea of providing them pageant NPCs to play was genius. I love it. I'm stealing it for my home game someday

on that note both Anjali and Liam are brilliant actors, watching them fully jump into characters they had just been introduced to (especially Anjali with Lisle pushing Opal's buttons? backstory? so good?) was great, and it was so much fun to watch them flex their improv muscles!

Cinna's ice sculpture sequence was INSPIRED. I was dying, it was so good—the descriptions, Orym being the 'volunteer', Cinna's whole accent and personality; all genius. when she got the natural 20 I straight up started applauding. I met this character 15 minutes ago y'all

side note sometimes you can see bits of Liam's DM side come out (the BeauYasha date, Widogast's Tower, the Programmed Illusion memories in Rumblecusp) and I think this was one of them. I always really enjoy it when it happens!

everyone else joining in Opal and backing her up? adorable. Opal joining Dariax in his Tin-Man costume? adorable. the whole party collectively flustering Dorian when he comes back in with his amazing outfit? adorable. I love them.

anytime Liam casts Druidcraft I think of Vax's snowdrops. which is not Liam's fault and I recognise they're different characters, I'm just soft and forever hold that in my heart

also, I really love Fy'ra Rai. I was not expecting a new character, but I am. so in love. damn.

I'm so intrigued by all the breadcrumbs! very excited to see where this campaign goes.

Still obsessed with Lou being such a giving player willing to lay it all on the line for Brennan... Lou/Jammer having just met Evan and already knowing this is his worst nightmare and doing everything in his power to protect him and keep him calm... keeping him calm looking like using intensely team focused language when Evan has been forced to spend so much of his time alone... Evan immediately starts mimicking that language... Brennan being so touched and immediately trying to pay him back and Aabria panicking in the background that hes going to waste all his adversity tokens on a flavor roll... I will never be over it
