The increasing number of wildfires is linked to the effects of climate change. The increasing presence of a carcinogen is a result of those fires.
It's widely known that wildfire smoke is bad for your health, but a group of researchers recently found a known carcinogen in California wildfire ash, raising concerns about just how harmful it could be to breathe the air near a blaze. According to a study released in Nature Communications last week, researchers discovered dangerous levels of hexavalent chromium in samples of ash left behind by the Kincade and Hennessey fires in 2019 and 2020. Workers in the manufacturing industry who've been exposed to elevated levels of hexavalent chromium,or chromium 6, have higher rates of lung cancer, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Scott Fendorf, a professor at the Doerr School of Sustainability at Stanford University who worked on the study, said he was shocked by the results. "Up until that point, if we had a wildfire, I was pretty cavalier about it, to be truthful. We get the alerts and I would still go outside and exercise, thinking exercise was the better factor for my health," Fendorf said. "Now it completely changes my calculation. When we start to get wildfire warnings or smoke warnings, I'm going to be wearing an N95 mask." In some affected areas, the study found that the concentration of chromium 6 was up to seven times that of unburned land. [ ... ] Metals such as chromium naturally exist in the environment, such as in rocks like serpentinite. In this case, Fendorf said, the wildfires' intense heat appears to have transformed chromium into its hexavalent state. "The fire changes a benign metal into a very toxic form of that metal," he said. Hexavalent chromium is also known as the "Erin Brockovich chemical," named for the consumer advocate whose legal battle to help a small California town affected by the compound was immortalized in a now famous film starring Julia Roberts. The Stanford team only tested ash from several areas in California, but Fendorf said the test sites contained various types of geology and vegetation, leading researchers to believe the results would be applicable to many regions across the globe. The study's findings also open the door to further investigation of possible wildfire exposure risks for other toxic metals.
The simplistic view of climate change is that Earth's thermostat is just being turned up. But as CO2 and other greenhouse gases increase, a complex series of chain reactions is taking place. The spread of hexavalent chromium is another product of those reactions.
Only one of the two major parties in the US is willing to take action on climate change. In Sean Hannity's famous dictator interview with Donald Trump, the indicted ex-president promised: "I want to drill, drill, drill".

what dangerous metal do you think would make pretty jewelry?
if we're counting dangerous metals incorporated into metal salts then possibly hexavalent chromium..... i think that a big old chunk of potassium dichromate on a ring would be pretty gorgeous🤔

The water is being used to cool the launch pad as Starship’s engines fire. While drinking water may be used in the system, after it comes into contact with the rocket exhaust, it contains high levels of dissolved solids and potentially toxic chemicals like zinc and hexavalent chromium.

I really liked this movie, I don't usually like this genre or this kind of movie but Julia Roberts did an amazing job doing this character.
It seemed like she was really into it and if i didn't know any better I'd think that she wss the real Erin Brockovich.
It was really beautiful because it showed that even if you are a single mother you can still do your job efficiently and it showed that if I man can do it then so can a woman and it was really inspirational because it was just, it showed the real side of society in a way and honestly the guy that rode a harley and had a beard I don't remember his name he was really supportive even though she like they didn't talk a lot or that she always dumped the kids for him to look after and she was always busy with work and always came back late but he was still around until he left and then she went back to him and because he's such a nice person he agreed to still look after her kids which was really beautiful and it showed that not all men are horrible and it was really beautiful.
And I know I still don't remember that fat guy's name I'm not like I don't want to body shame him but I just don't remember his name he was really sweet like in the beginning he was such an asshole but honestly I really started to like him when he bought her that car because then she could take her kids places and many other stuff.
Also the fact that she went to every single door and talked to those people that were sick because of the hexavalent chromium that was in the water and got to know every single one and how they were sick and who was sick and their family members and that was a lot of work and she memorized every single thing about the plaintiffs was really really really inspirational and it was mind-blowing like how can someone remember 600 plaintiffs by heart like it's really really impressive.
And the fact that this movie was based on a true story just blows my mind because this actually happened in real life like this is not made up which is really beautiful and the real Erin Brockovich is just straight up amazing.
Overall this movie was a 10/10 and it's definitely going on my top 10 movies ❤️

Once a pig gets a taste for hexavalent chromium it can be hard to tear them away from it. A few sessions of reprogramming should help it stay focused on the job.

Blood Colours
I started thinking about blood colours, so here are some things I have thought of for some of my species:
Vanadium based: Yellow when oxygenated due to the +5 oxidation state; blue/purple when deoxygenated thanks to V(IV) or V(II) respectively. The people of {Amadala} have this.
Chromium based: Orange when oxygenated as chromium is in its hexavalent form and dark green when deoxygenated due to Cr(III). This flows through the veins of the Akina and the other «vertebrate» fauna of their world.
Iron based: Red when oxygenated due to iron(III), in the Ure-Jani and Araacr it gains a greenish tint thanks to chlorine, it gets darker when deoxygenated thanks to iron(II). I am basing this on hemoglobin.
I am basing these colours off those of the respective ions/salts in solution. If anyone has a better perspective on this and would like to add something, please do.

Chromium Recycling
Last week I posted about one waste product involved with the production of chromium (COPR) - this week the discussion is on chromium waste itself. As the vast majority of chromium production goes toward metal alloys, it is metal recycling that has the biggest impact on chromium recycling. The percentage of chromium that gets recycled depends on the alloy and the industry in question. However, based on studies from the late 1980s on the US chromium industry, only around 20% of chromium was recycled.
One industry that still has issues with chromium waste is leather tanning, where hexavalent chromium can be generated if waste is disposed of improperly. The images above come from improper waste disposal in sub Saharan Africa, though of course it is only one such example. In countries without strict regulations against chromium disposal, the tanning industry is considered a major polluter of the environment. Countries such as Australia, China, Spain, and Brazil, among others, have had issues, and thousands of hectares of land in India and Bangledesh has been rendered barren by chromium disposal.

Everyone wants to talk about leather so they can DESTROY vegan arguments with Facts and Logic. No one actually knows shit about the tanning process or leather maintenance.
Someone buying a brand new chrome-tanned leather purse and then not even bothering to condition it is not making an environmentally friendly choice! It’s gonna crack and fall apart in a couple years and all the hexavalent chromium poisoning the water in Bangladesh won’t have even gone towards something that lasts.

Note
cool chromium facts: hexavalent chromium is one of the deadliest carcinogens known to man! it's also a lovely shade of orange. also, steel in the modern day wouldn't exist without chromium! almost all alloys of steel have some of it in them nowadays.
