The increasing number of wildfires is linked to the effects of climate change. The increasing presence of a carcinogen is a result of those fires.
It's widely known that wildfire smoke is bad for your health, but a group of researchers recently found a known carcinogen in California wildfire ash, raising concerns about just how harmful it could be to breathe the air near a blaze. According to a study released in Nature Communications last week, researchers discovered dangerous levels of hexavalent chromium in samples of ash left behind by the Kincade and Hennessey fires in 2019 and 2020. Workers in the manufacturing industry who've been exposed to elevated levels of hexavalent chromium,or chromium 6, have higher rates of lung cancer, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Scott Fendorf, a professor at the Doerr School of Sustainability at Stanford University who worked on the study, said he was shocked by the results. "Up until that point, if we had a wildfire, I was pretty cavalier about it, to be truthful. We get the alerts and I would still go outside and exercise, thinking exercise was the better factor for my health," Fendorf said. "Now it completely changes my calculation. When we start to get wildfire warnings or smoke warnings, I'm going to be wearing an N95 mask." In some affected areas, the study found that the concentration of chromium 6 was up to seven times that of unburned land. [ ... ] Metals such as chromium naturally exist in the environment, such as in rocks like serpentinite. In this case, Fendorf said, the wildfires' intense heat appears to have transformed chromium into its hexavalent state. "The fire changes a benign metal into a very toxic form of that metal," he said. Hexavalent chromium is also known as the "Erin Brockovich chemical," named for the consumer advocate whose legal battle to help a small California town affected by the compound was immortalized in a now famous film starring Julia Roberts. The Stanford team only tested ash from several areas in California, but Fendorf said the test sites contained various types of geology and vegetation, leading researchers to believe the results would be applicable to many regions across the globe. The study's findings also open the door to further investigation of possible wildfire exposure risks for other toxic metals.
The simplistic view of climate change is that Earth's thermostat is just being turned up. But as CO2 and other greenhouse gases increase, a complex series of chain reactions is taking place. The spread of hexavalent chromium is another product of those reactions.
Only one of the two major parties in the US is willing to take action on climate change. In Sean Hannity's famous dictator interview with Donald Trump, the indicted ex-president promised: "I want to drill, drill, drill".

Leather vs. Pleather: 8 Myths Debunked
Since we are all beyond tired of seeing the same regurgitated leather posts every day, I've compiled and briefly debunked some of the most common myths peddled about leather and pleather… So hopefully we can all move on to talk about literally anything else.
1) Leather is not sustainable.
Approximately 85% of all leather (almost all leather you'll find in stores) is tanned using chromium. During the chrome tanning process, 40% of unused chromium salts are discharged in the final effluents, which makes it's way into waterways and poses a serious threat to wildlife and humans. There are also significant GHG emissions from the sheer amount of energy required to produce and tan leather.
Before we even get the cow's hide, you first need to get them to slaughter weight, which is a hugely resource-intensive process. Livestock accounts for 80% of all agricultural land use, and grazing land for cattle likely represents the majority of that figure. To produce 1 pound of beef (and the subsequent hide), 6-8 pounds of feed are required. An estimated 86% of the grain used to feed cattle is unfit for human consumption, but 14% alone represents enough food to feed millions of people. On top of that, one-third of the global water footprint of animal production is related to cattle alone. The leather industry uses greenwashing to promote leather as an eco-friendly material. Leather is often marketed as an eco-friendly product, for example, fashion brands often use the Leather Working Group (LWG) certificate to present their leather as sustainable. However, this certification (rather conveniently) does not include farm-level impacts, which constitute the majority of the negative environmental harm caused by leather.
2) Leather is not just a byproduct.
Some cows are raised speciifically for leather, but this a minority and usually represents the most expensive forms of leather. This does not mean that leather is just a waste product of beef and dairy, or that it is a completely incidental byproduct; it is more accurate to call leather a tertiary product of the beef and dairy industries. Hides used to fetch up to 50% of the total value of the carcass, this has dropped significantly since COVID-19 to only about 5-10%, but this is recovering, and still represents a significant profit margin. Globally, leather accounts for up to 26% of major slaughterhouses’ earnings. Leather is inextricably linked to the production of beef and dairy, and buying leather helps make the breeding, exploitation and slaughter of cows and steers a profitable enterprise.
3) Leather is not as biodegradable as you think.
Natural animal hides are biodegradable, and this is often the misleading way leather that sellers word it. "Cow hide is fully biodegradable" is absolutely true, it just purposely leaves out the fact that the tanning process means that the hide means that leather takes between 25 and 40 years to break down. Even the much-touted (despite it being a tiny portion of the market) vegetable-tanned leather is not readily biodegradable. Since leather is not recyclable either, most ends up incinerated, or at landfill. The end-of-life cycle and how it relates to sustainability is often massively overstated by leather sellers, when in fact, it is in the production process that most of the damage is done.
4) Leather is not humane.
The idea that leather represents some sort of morally neutral alternative to the evils of plastic is frankly laughable, at least to anyone who has done even a little bit of research into this exploitative and incredibly harmful industry. Cows, when properly cared for, can live more than fifteen years. However, most cows are usually slaughtered somewhere around 2-3 years old, and the softest leather, most luxurious leather comes from the hide of cows who are less than a year old. Some cows are not even born before they become victim to the industry. Estimates vary, but according to an EFSA report, on average 3% of dairy cows and 1.5 % of beef cattle, are in their third-trimester of pregnancy when they are slaughtered.
Slaughter procedures vary slightly by country, but a captive bolt pistol shot to the head followed by having their throats slit, while still alive, is standard industry practice. This represents the “best” a slaughtered cow can hope for, but many reports and videos exist that suggest that cows still being alive and conscious while being skinned or dismembered on the production line is not uncommon, some of these reports come from slaughterhouse workers themselves.
5) Leather often involves human exploitation.
The chemicals used to tan leather, and the toxic water that is a byproduct of tanning, affect workers as well as the environment; illness and death due to toxic tanning chemicals is extremely common. Workers across the sector have significantly higher morbidity, largely due to respiratory diseases linked to the chemicals used in the tanning process. Exposure to chromium (for workers and local communities), pentachlorophenol and other toxic pollutants increase the risk of dermatitis, ulcer nasal septum perforation and lung cancer.
Open Democracies report for the Child Labour Action Research Programme shows that there is a startlingly high prevalence of the worst forms of child labour across the entire leather supply chain. Children as young as seven have been found in thousands of small businesses processing leather. This problem is endemic throughout multiple countries supplying the global leather market.
6) Pleather is not a ‘vegan thing’.
Plastic clothing is ubiquitous in fast fashion, and it certainly wasn’t invented for vegans. Plastic leather jackets have been around since before anyone even knew what the word vegan meant, marketing department have begun describing it as ‘vegan leather’ but it’s really no more a vegan thing than polyester is. Most people who wear pleather are not vegan, they just can’t afford to buy cow’s leather, which remains extremely expensive compared to comparable fabrics.
It is striking how anti-vegans consistently talk about how ‘not everyone can afford to eat plant-based’ and criticise vegans for advocating for veganism on that basis, yet none of them seem to mind criticisms directed at people for wearing a far cheaper alternative than leather. You can obviously both be vegan and reduce plastic (as we all should), but vegans wear plastic clothing for the same reason everyone else does: It is cheaper.
7) Plastic is not the only alternative.
When engaging in criticism of pleather, the favourite tactic seems to be drawing a false dilemma where we pretend the only options are plastic and leather. Of course, this is a transparent attempt to draw the debate on lines favourable to advocates of leather, by omitting the fact that you can quite easily just buy neither one.
Alternatives include denim, hemp, cork, fiber, mushroom fiber, cotton, linen, bamboo, recycled plastic, and pinatex, to name a few. Alternatives exist for everything from materials designed to ensure sub-zero temperatures and specialist motorcycle equipment. There are exceptions in professions like welding, where an alternative can be difficult to source, but nobody needs a jacket, shoes or a bag that looks like leather. For most of us, leather is a luxury item that doesn’t even need to be replaced at all.
8) Leather is not uniquely long-lasting.
The longevity of leather is really the only thing it has going for it, environmentally speaking. Replacing an item less often means fewer purchases, and will likely have a lower environmental impact than one you have to replace regularly. Leather is not unique in this respect, however, and the idea that it is, is mostly just effective marketing.
As your parents will tell you, a well-made denim jacket can last a lifetime. Hemp and bamboo can both last for decades, as can cork and pinatex. Even cotton and linen can last for many years when items are looked after well. While some materials are more hard wearing than others, how long an item will last is mostly the result of how well made the product is and how well it is maintained, not whether or not the item is leather.

ATTENTION ARTISTS!!
I have been going down an art history hyperfixiation at the moment, so I’m going to make it all of you lovely people’s problem.
I have an art challenge for you! Throughout history, there have been multiple famous painters that use ‘limited palettes’, which are palettes that only have a few specific colors and nothing else. This would add a level of challenge while also making their art distinct.
In this event, you must use a different color palette used by famous painters for 7 days.
RULES
You can do this digitally or traditionally
ONLY THE PALETTE OF THE DAY, NO OTHER COLORS.
You dont have to use every color listed in the designated palette, because some of them are VERY long.
Some of the colors (i.e: vermillion, cadmium, lead) are actually TOXIC paints. DO NOT USE THE ACTUAL TOXIC PAINT. This is for your safety; please use the shades similar to it.
Make sure to use the tag #limitedpaletteweek so I can see :D
Have fun!

List of programs and stuff I use
[pt: List of programs and stuff I use ./end pt]
Disclaimer: This is in no way trying to say I have the best setup of all time or anything. The point of this post is mostly to introduce people to cool things they may not know about, or a place to point to when someone asks what I use!
(Last updated: 6/28/24)
Browser
[pt: browser ./end pt]
Firefox (Windows/Linux/MacOS/Android/IOS) - Obviously I recommend Firefox above all else, especially with chromium-based browsers moving onto manifest V3.
Bitwarden (Windows/Linux/MacOS/Android/IOS) - Good password manager! Used it for years with no complaints!
AdNauseam (Firefox/Chrome) - My adblocker. It's built upon uBlock Origin and has all the same features, but it actively clicks on the ads to waste advertiser money. If that's not up your alley, uBlock Origin is fantastic too!
Wayback Machine extension (Firefox/Chrome/Safari) - Allows you to make snapshots of pages, or view old snapshots if a page isn't loading correctly!
XKit ReWritten (Firefox/Chrome) - Pretty much a must-have for Tumblr. Has a ton of features to make navigating this site much better. Full feature list here!
Discord
[pt: Discord ./end pt]
Vencord (Windows/Linux/MacOS) - A modified Discord client that adds support for plugins and themes. Basically allows you to install plugins from a massive list that improves Discord. (Technically against ToS. Basically, don't post that you're using it in big servers, and turn off your themes before sharing screenshots.)
Bunny (Android/IOS) - If you miss Vendetta for Discord, Bunny is an actively maintained fork of Vendetta! Basically the same as above, but for Android/IOS instead of desktop. Same warnings about ToS apply.
Aliucord (Android) - Miss the old Android app feel, and still want to have plugins/themes? Pretty cool but has a less impressive theme/plugin selection. Same warnings about ToS apply.
Bluecord (Android) - Another Discord modification without the new Discord UI!
Youtube
[pt: Youtube ./end pt]
Freetube (Windows/Linux/MacOS) - A desktop Youtube client with adblock and sponsorblock built in. Still in beta, but very good.
Sponsorblock (Firefox/Chrome) - Pretty much a must-have for watching Youtube these days. Automatically skips over sponsors, self-promos, interaction bait, outros, intros, etc. Highly configurable!
Dearrow (Firefox/Chrome) - Haven't used this very long but I love it. Gets rid of vague or clickbait titles/thumbnails and replaces it with descriptive and more accurate thumbnails. Also built into Freetube now!
Newpipe (Android) - Lightweight Youtube client. I haven't used it myself much but people swear by it!
ReVanced (Android) - Modded Youtube client with Sponsorblock, Return Youtube Dislike, and Youtube Premium features. Doesn't support Dearrow as of 6/25/24 :( (PLEASE BE CAREFUL INSTALLING THIS. If you don't know what you're doing, you can cause some damage!)
Spotify
[pt: spotify ./end pt]
Spicetify (Windows/Linux/MacOS) - Spotify modded client. Has adblock, themes, etc! Think Vencord, but for Spotify.
Misc.
[pt: Misc ./End pt]
Obsidian (Windows/Linux/MacOS/Android/IOS) - Basically a personal wiki for notetaking! A bit of a learning curve. Fanfic writers and worldbuilders... go feral.
Notepad++ (Windows) - A must-have text editor. Might be on more platforms but can't confirm?
Mullvad VPN (Windows/Android) - The only VPN I can 100% recommend. Cheap, fast, and really cares about your privacy. It's a little under $6 USD a month!
NVDA (Windows) - A free screenreader I use for reading large blocks of text. (Notice: I am not visually impaired to the point I rely on a screenreader to navigate my PC. I use it on occasion to read text to me because I have a hard time reading. If you're looking for advice on screenreaders for the visually impaired unfortunately I'm not a good source! Maybe check out the #visually impaired, #blind, or #accessibility?)
Syncthing (Windows/Linux/MacOS/Android) - Lets you sync folders across devices. It's especially good with Obsidian.
"Tequito, I didn't find what I wanted!"
[pt: "Tequito, I didn't find what I wanted!" ./end pt]
I'm sorry. :( If you're looking for a program I have personally mentioned using in the past, feel free to shoot me an ask or DM! Or hey... maybe try searching the letters "FMHY" and having a look around? *wink*

Residues: Identified residual chemicals from inks and dyes, with some degradation products.
4. Microbiological Assays
Bacterial Presence: Identified bacterial species including Bacillus and Pseudomonas spp.
Fungal Presence: Traces of fungal spores, likely Aspergillus and Penicillium spp.
5. Moisture Content Analysis
Moisture Level: Moderate moisture content of 12%.
Chemical Composition: The moisture contained slight acidic properties.
6. Odour Analysis
Detected Odours: Mild, musty odour with hints of organic decay.
Discussion
The examination of the paper sample indicates several key findings:
The physical condition and minor wear suggest it was exposed to an environment with abrasive materials and some physical stress.
The presence of heavy metals and organic pollutants detected by XRF and GC-MS indicates exposure to a polluted environment, potentially involving industrial or waste materials.
Microbial assays revealed early stages of microbial colonisation by bacteria and fungi typically associated with organic material decomposition.
The moderate moisture content and slight acidity suggest exposure to a moist environment with some chemical interactions.
Odour analysis confirmed the presence of organic decay-related gases.
The combination of physical wear, chemical contaminants, microbial presence, and environmental indicators suggests that the paper may have been exposed to a mixed waste or polluted environment. The findings are consistent with environments such as waste disposal sites, polluted industrial areas, or other locations with significant organic and inorganic contaminants.
Conclusion
The paper sample shows signs of exposure to a polluted and possibly waste-rich environment. The results indicate physical wear, contamination by heavy metals and organic pollutants, microbial activity, and environmental interactions that are typical of such conditions. Further context about the paper's origin could provide more specific insights.

Something i love a lot about Renegades is the amount of parallels/sometimes foreshadowing there are in the books. These are the ones i remember, but there may be more:
6 year old Nova telling herself to pull the trigger to shot her family's murderer -> 16 year old Nova telling herself to pull the trigger to shot Captain Chromium -> Nova saying "i pulled the trigger" after shooting Ingrid
Nova handing Adrian a gun in a flirty/playful way while teaching him how to shoot in book 2 -> Nova coldly aiming at Adrian's head with a gun in book 3 (please someone needs to draw this)
The very first chapter and the epilogue (the parade scenes)
THESE ONES FROM BOOK 1 AND BOOK 3
Tumblr media
"we were all villains in the beginning" -> "we were all heroes in the end"
Nova and Adrian watching eachother across the arena in book 1 during the trials -> Nightmare and the Sentinel watching eachother across the arena in book 3 during that brief moment of wonder mid-battle
Nova trying to help an injured Max in book 1 and being found by Adrian -> Nightmare trying to save a gravely injured Max in book 2 and being found by the Sentinel
6 year old Nova putting Evie to sleep when she's crying -> Nightmare putting Magpie to sleep while she's crying during the arena battle in book 3

two things about environmentalism as a political movement: one, no political movement, once it has accumulated policy wins (=power) ever goes, “well, all our problems are solved! time to dissolve ourselves :)” and since all politics is aesthetics, the grist for their ideological mill may find something that aesthetically resembles their previous raison d’etre, and latch on to that: opposing nuclear power because nuclear bombs are also a thing, for instance, even though nuclear power is actually pretty good for the environment. for the same reason, once your concerned mothers group gets the tuesday afternoon showings of hardcore pornography banned at the local preschool, they don’t go “job well done!” and quit; they start going after the next group of perverts, like furries or people who masturbate with the shades drawn and lights off to god-fearing porn about heterosexual reproduction
two, though: there will always be an incentive to skirt environmental regulations, even if those regulations are objectively a pretty good idea. air pollution is bad. it kills a ton of people! it used to make cities nigh-unlivable! water pollution is also really bad. but it’s much much cheaper to dump your excess chromium 6 in the local water supply than it is to dispose of it properly, and, well, economic incentives often point in pretty sharply amoral directions! this isn’t a capitalism thing, either; communist countries often have a pretty absymal environmental record, especially bc they frequently suppress political dissent, like environmentalist movements. it’s actually probably a good thing to have an activist segment of your society devoted to environmental issues, for the same reason it’s a good thing to have an activist segment of your society devoted to labor rights, or free speech, or any other issue of political or social equity.

Tutorial: Netflix screencaps
So as promised a tutorial for Netflix screencapturing both video and images. Just in case a disclaimer: I do not posses of Blue eye samurai idea, plot, scenario, animation nor anything. I simply make pictures for fangirling. I do not sell it to anybody nor making a pirate content. If you want to watch this amazing show get Netflix subscription, ok?
Now let's start the tutorial :)
First to make it able capturing screen on Netflix you have to disable hardware acceleration in your browser. Go to settings -> system. There you can find this setting. Any chromium browser has this setting. You can find those in Google Chrome, Arc, Brave and etc. In my case it's Arc browser.
Tumblr media
2. Disable the acceleration and relaunch browser
Tumblr media
3. After relaunching go to Netflix and capture a wanted scene. For screenshots I use macbook shortcut cmd+shift+3 and cmd+shift+5 for video capturing. Be aware that without graphics acceleration your machine will hit up significantly, so be careful. Also while capturing the screen you could find the picture became more pixelized. In both cases switch acceleration on again, relaunch your browser, then enter settings and disable it again to continue the process.
4. Now when we've got a video fragment it should be edited. I use IMovie. Just drug'n'drop a video fragment and edit as you like
Tumblr media
5. After editing is finished export the file by clicking on an export icon in the top right and save an .pm4 file
Tumblr media
6. Now we want to make a gif out of our .mp4 file. I do that through Keynote which looks like some kind of perversion for me tbh but i just find it faster for me. You could use any other tool If you prefer. Now launch Keynote, create a new project with simple white page. Then delete all the text from the slide
Tumblr media
7. Now drug'n'drop into the slide an mp4 video fragment you edited
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. The last thing - export it as gif through File -> Export To -> Animated GIF. And that's all basically.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Enjoy your gifs :)

The Planet Ordo (Remade)
Tumblr media
(This is all Fanon) Ordo’s air is actually thinner than normal, with the oxygen levels being around 25% lower than what is considered normal for humans, while people native to the planet do not experience any problems, somebody new to the planet will likely be fatigued and require time to adjust
The planet Ordo consists mainly of rocky, mountainous deserts that have a reddish orange color due to high amounts of iron oxides. The area around Ordos equator has a high abundance of underground rivers and lakes, which is why the closer to the equator one goes, the more vegetation one will see.
The planet's mantle is abundant in a mineral called ciridium, ciridium is used in the creation and forging of superalloys such as beskar, phrik, chromium and cortosis. Clan Ordo has mined this ciridium for generations, selling it to the other Clans.
Most of Ordo’s native wildlife has a crustacean like appearance, a notable example is the sand crab. Clan Ordo has also brought in eopies, nuna and strills
Ordo is often referred to as “the brewing capital of the Mandalorian space” because a huge amount of alcohol is made and exported by the locals, Netra’gal is native to the planet, and there is around 1 still for every 6 people
The main settlement on Ordo is known as Ordomorut. This is a massive underground fortress carved into an extinct stratovolcano. Ordomourut is also the ancestral home of the Mandalorian Clan Ordo, big surprise
To the southwest you can find the ruins of a Mandalorian battlefleet that was destroyed in the Dral’han, there is a small settlement nearby whose inhabitants salvage scrap metal
The local delicacy is known as Gi’shun, it is made by combining grain, eggs, a variety of spices, Netra’gal and shredded sand crab meat, the resulting mixture is then shaped into balls and fried in eopie tallow.
(it's essentially a very spicy crab cake)
comments are always appreciated
