Whenever people ask why I’m interested in the Victorian era I don’t quite know how to tell them that I grew up on ‘children’s’ books about a Victorian foundling who falls in love with her foster brother aged five, wants to run away to the circus, endures many hardships as a foundling, reunites with her birth mother who has changed her name to be with her daughter as a cook at the Foundling Hospital, is sent to work for a writer who tries to steal her life story to write a book, falls in love with a butcher’s apprentice, watches her mother die before becoming employed at a freak show as a mermaid and exposing a fake psychic, goes to the seaside to meet her biological father, runs away to the circus to become a ringmaster, escapes said circus with an abused acrobat child who was sold by her father to the circus, joins a music hall as a fake ventriloquist with said child, goes back home to her foster family for her foster father’s funeral and then her foster brother’s wedding, where the brother kisses her and tries to convince her to elope (she refuses - side note, another foundling was placed with that family and the brother tried to play out the same thing with that poor child) then becomes an actress with the acrobat child. Jacqueline Wilson was something else, and the Hetty Feather books are still my special interest.

Just discovered the French editions of Hetty Feather have different covers and illustrations and they're so much better than the originals imo??
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like no disrespect to Nick Sharratt but this artstyle matches the vibe of the books so perfectly! Plus Hetty actually looks like she's aging throughout the books here?
She's 5 at the start of the series and 16 at the end, and yet in the original UK illustrations the only difference is she gets slightly taller but is otherwise identical. 😅

Re-reading the Hetty Feather series as an adult, I would have much preferred if Jem, while really caring for Hetty, was actually lying to her and Eliza in the same way about eventually getting married. It's much more bittersweet as the actions of a boy trying to give a little girl some hope to cling onto at the Foundling Hospital, than what we get in the end which is a 19 year old awkwardly waiting for a 14 (maybe 15) year old to start loving him romantically. Jem, my guy, that's your foster sister and the last time you saw her she was 5. Wtf is wrong with you.

As of We Are the Beaker Girls, Tracy Beaker is working in an antique shop. Imagine if she came across Hetty Feather's journals. Imagine Tracy discovering this scrappy, temperamental, determined Victorian girl who grew up in an institution, loved writing, chafed against authority, longed for family. I think she'd make a connection with her and become very interested in the life she made for herself.

books can become so funny if you just randomly bleep out words for no fucking reason.
"He wondered if they'd [__] Warren"
" 'We don't know' Naome said 'We swore we'd never [__] anyone, ever.' "
"I could see a group of men [__]ing across the lawn"
"Over his shoulder, I see my mother and Prim [__]ing each other in the doorway"
"Firepaw [__]ed over the brow of a [__]-covered sloped. Greypaw and Revenpaw [__]ed beside him"
"Ida's [__] had gone right up my sleeve and down inside my dress"
" 'You think I can do [__] with a [__], Magnus Chase?' he [__]ed "HURRY UP WITH THAT[__]!' "
" 'Your [__] are stolen and you are inferior' said Master Joseph, his voice thick with [__]. 'You were never meant to [__] [__] [__].' "

[ID: Tumblr post from @partywithponies reading: “New terrible tumblr poll tournament idea: The Jacqueline Wilson Character Trauma Olympics. You have to pick which of two a Jacqueline Wilson characters has had the worst/most traumatic childhood and is going to be the most psychologically damaged by this in adulthood.” /End ID]
Hello, this is the terrible tumblr poll tournament, trying to figure out the definitive (as voted by tumblr) worst/most traumatic Jacqueline Wilson character childhood/adolescence.
All characters from children’s/adolescent’s books or short stories (including things like “Leonie’s Pet Cat” from Paws and Whiskers) by Jacqueline Wilson will be included, however there will be a form, both for seeding, for bringing up characters I might’ve missed, and for submitting your propaganda!
Other polls: @john-bracket @tournamentdirectory
(I don’t know many other polls, so, hi john bracket)

Ok so last night I had a weird ass dream about Enoch o Conner, but before he was found by an ymbrine and joined a loop etc, and I don’t know if anyone has watched this (it’s a British children’s/teens programme) but I dreamed that he lived in the foundling hospital out of ‘hetty feather’ and was friends with Mathias and all that lot, and I dreamed that he was best friends with Vince (which I’m sorry but that would SO HAPPEN they’d be and unstoppable force) and for the most part of my dream it was just him and Vince making fun of Mathias and Gideon and it was literally just the first few seasons of hetty feather but with Enoch in there with them and I think it’s the best thing my brain has ever made
And for a second when I woke up I thought was a genius because the years matched up too but I looked it up and it turns out hetty feather is actually set like 20 years before Enoch was born but we can ignore that bit because who cares

So far I've reread the original Hetty Feather trilogy, Diamond, and Little Stars...CAN I JUST SAY HOW UNBELIEVABLY ANNOYING HETTY'S FOSTER SISTERS ARE WTF
LIKE THE WAY THEY ACT SO SNOBBY...so unwelcoming...so callous and insensitive towards Hetty and Gideon. It was bad in Emerald Star but it literally gets even worse in Little Stars 💀 I know Hetty has matured somewhat at this point, in terms of not flying into tempers so easily, but I literally would have decked those women idk how she had the self-restraint not to LMAO. I was absolutely getting the same vibes when it's pointed out that Peg seemed to appreciate the company of her foster children more.
Screw you to Nora, Bess, Rosie and (the older) Eliza in particular 🖕 and screw Jem as well but my disdain is for different reasons 💀 Janet deserved better smh.
